CATSKILL-DELAWARE PUBLICATIONS, INC.
Welcome Dear Readers, The Sullivan County Democrat would like to welcome you to our nineteenth edition of “Where to Go, Where to Stay, Where to Dine.” We hope you use this handy 56-page guide as your ticket for summer fun in Sullivan County. And what a summer we have planned for you! From street fairs to fireworks, concerts to the Little Worlds Fair, Sullivan County has never had more events on tap than this year. Check out our handy summer calendar, which begins on page 27. Also, throughout this publication you will find stories about some of the more popular summer venues like Bethel Woods, The Forestburgh Playhouse and the Delaware Valley Opera. And as our cover shows, Sullivan County is really a sportsmen’s paradise. We have camping, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, biking, hiking, floating, swimming, running, walking, zip lining, segwaying, water skiing, jet skiing, rock climbing, exploring, sightseeing and historical adventures, to name a few. If you haven’t explored Sullivan County’s great outdoors, now is your time. The Delaware, Neversink, Beaverkill and Willowemoc rivers all run through it, with some of the best fly fishing stretches in the entire United States. And there are reservoirs and lakes galore to suit any water lover’s needs, with plenty of bass, perch, pickerel and panfish. So keep “Where to Go” in your car as you travel around the county to make sure you don’t miss a beat. Best of all, all of our advertisers stand ready to prepare your favorite meal, help you with your purchase and answer your questions. Sullivan County is truly “customer friendly” and it shows. Stop by one of our many advertisers and please don’t forget to say “Where to Go, Stay & Dine” sent you.

he Delaware Valley Opera (DVO) announces its 2013 Season: Mischievous, Magnificant Mozart! The DVO’s 2013 summer offerings will explore the comic side of Mozart’s operas with three productions: “Mostly Figaro”, a performance of comic scenes; “The Impresario”, and “Abduction from the Seraglio.” The season will begin with the launching of “Opera ADVANTAGE” – a two-week summer intensive program for singers and collaborative pianists in partnership with the New York Opera Studio. Singers and pianists will study music, diction, and performance practices, culminating in performance sof comic scenes from “The Marriage of Figaro” and other Mozart operas. “The Impresario” is a story about the trials of an opera general manager as he begins auditions for his next season – as hilarious and timely as it was when Mozart wrote it! The DVO version of Mozart’s comic one-act opera, sung in English and set in modern time, will not only include Mozart’s two rivaling divas but many other ambitious singers looking for positions in the opera company. This hilarious and stunning little piece will delight and entertain audiences of all ages. “Abduction From the Seraglio” will crown the season. Mozart’s charming story of a man’s attempt to rescue his beloved from a Turkish harem, contains some of Mozart’s most sparkling and poignant music. It is a colorful adventure in a foreign land with spectacular vocal challenges. In addition to the summer season the DVO and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts will again join forces by offering the Youth Opera Experience – a two-week summer program for children (ages 8 - 14). Parficipants will explore costume and set and prop design, advertising, marketing, composing, singing, dancing, and performing Victor Herbert’s “Babes in Toyland.” The DVO will again partner with the Northern Dutchess Sumphony Orchestra with Verdi’s “La Traviata”. The DVO will celebrate the holiday season with a family production at Bethel Woods Center for the Performing Arts and throughout the community. July 11 & 13 - Opera ADVANTAGE Summer Program for Singers and Pianists at SUNY Sullivan (Opera Concert 7/11; Songs Concert 7/13) July 20 & 21 - “Mostly Figaro” (SUNY Sullivan 7/20 and Tusten Theater 7/21) August 2 - 4 - “Impresario” at Tusten Theater in English August 3 - “Babes in Toyland” with Youth Opera Experience at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts August 16 - 25 & September 15 - “Abduction from the Seraglio” (SUNY Sullivan 8/17; Wallenpaupack H.S. 8/18; Tusten Theater 8/16, 23 - 25; Mongtomery 9/15) October 20 - “La Traviata” with Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra (Rhinebeck H.S. Theater) December: Family opera at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts For detailed information, visit www.delawarevalley opera.org.

Summer Festival 2013, at Eddie Adams Barn, in Jeffersonville. Cost is $0 - $30, depending on event. It’s a milestone year as WCM moves into its third decade in the Catskills with its annual summer festival from July 14 to 27. American composer Andrew Waggoner and cellist Caroline Stinson step into roles as new artistic co-directors, committed to continuing the world-class performance standard set by flutist Judith Pearce as she passes the baton. Beginning with a free outdoor concert in Jeffersonville, the Festival brings back Thursday MusicTalks! programs in North Branch and Bethel; two Saturday night main events with a free Friday rehearsal at the Eddie Adams Barn in Jeffersonville, plus a return to the Callicoon Farmers’ Market. Celebrating 20 years, WCM brings on a composer-in-residence, the acclaimed John Harbison, who comes with a premiere & discussion of his work; classical improvisation is highlighted again among music by Beethoven, Bach, Maw, Martinu, Haydn and Stravinsky, and the Festival pays tribute to Ms. Pearce for her visionary leadership at WCM’s helm. Please check the website for details, or call for information. Every Thurs., Fri., Sat., and Sun., until July 27. For info, call 932-8527. THE FORESTBURGH PLAYHOUSE - the Miracle of the Forest
W
hat makes the Forestburgh Playhouse the Miracle of the Forest? Even after 67 years in existence, a lot of people still think of the Forestburgh Playhouse as just a little barn in the woods where kids put on shows in the summer – a description of summer stock that we proudly embrace. Yet, charming as that image is, it doesn’t do justice to what the Forestburgh Playhouse truly is – the oldest professional summer theatre in NY state and one of the cornerstones of the rich cultural heritage of Sullivan County. Every summer,

the Playhouse employs over 50 professional actors who are supported by an additional staff of 50 designers, technicians and administrative staff. This dedicated company of artists comes from all over the country with one mission: to create magical theatrical experiences for the visitors and residents of Sullivan County. Nestled in the heart of Sullivan County, the Forestburgh Playhouse has been bringing professional theatre to the beautiful Catskill Mountains every summer since 1947. Whether enjoying a fully-staged Broadway musical or play, bringing the kids to morning children’s theatre matinees, or indulging in a snack or beverage in the Tavern while enjoying the pre or post-show cabaret performance, everyone has a magical time at Forestburgh Playhouse. Last year, nearly 19,000 people attended mainstage productions, more than 5,000 patrons attended cabarets, and our children’s theatre played to more than 3,000. In all, the Forestburgh Playhouse entertained close to 27,000 people. Not bad for a century old barn that only seats 288 people per performance. For the summer of 2013, the Playhouse will produce its usual three full seasons of theatrical offerings: Broadway style theatre on the mainstage, musical cabarets in the adjoining Tavern, and three
