Welcome!

Dear Readers, The Sullivan County Democrat would like to welcome you to our twenty-fifth edition of “Where to Go, Where to Stay, Where to Dine.” We hope you will keep this handy 64-page guide by your side as your ticket for summer fun in Sullivan County. Speaking of anniversaries – while this magazine celebrates its silver anniversary our county is busy making plans to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of Woodstock. Yes, it was 50 years ago this August that Max Yasgur agreed to rent his hayfields to a couple of promoters to host what has become one of the most recognized arts events in history. Today, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts hosts thousands of concertgoers each year who can enjoy the beautiful views of the former Woodstock site, visit the Bethel Woods Museum and see first-hand what happened in Sullivan County in August, 1969. To help celebrate the event, 50 doves were painted and put around the county to build on the Woodstock vibe, and we hope you look for them in your travels. Take a day trip and enjoy. Sullivan County really comes alive in the summer, and our extensive calendar, advertisements and stories will give you a glimpse of all that is happening this June, July and August. For the active family, Sullivan County offers golfing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, hiking, biking and fishing in one of the most beautiful areas in all of New York State. There is also a vibrant arts scene, great shopping, dining and more. So get on your travel shoes, crack open our wonderful guide and explore everything Sullivan County has to offer. And make sure you tell them… Where to Go, Stay & Dine sent you!

olunteers are needed for Kittatinny Canoes’ 30th Annual “On and Under the Delaware River Clean Up,” which will take place July 15 to 16. Every year Kittatinny sponsors this 70-mile river clean up effort, the only one of its kind, which demonstrates the adventure company’s commitment to preserving the beauty of the free flowing Delaware River. Kittatinny keeps the river clean and the banks green! This is Kittatinny’s way of giving back to this wonderful resource.

Last year 147 volunteers picked up 99 tires, 83 pounds of cans, and a total of 1.4 tons of garbage. In exchange for their help, volunteers will receive free camping and canoes on river cleanup days as well as breakfast and dinner. • Monday, July 15, volunteers will meet at Kittatinny Campgrounds, located at 3854 State Route 97, Barryville, NY, 12719. or the 26th straight year, the Shandelee Music Festival (SMF) will bring internationally renowned, world-class music to the mountains above Livingston Manor. Having celebrated a successful silver anniversary last year with six of their famous Sunset Concerts, the SMF will once again offer a full six-part series for 2019. The season begins on Saturday, August 3 with “An Evening of Extraordinary Guitar,” featuring multiple-award-winner Gladius. Described as evoking the Spanish spirit, yet distinctly unorthodox, Gladius mixes influences from classical guitar to rock and beyond. On Tuesday, August 6, enjoy “An Evening of Chamber Music” with the triumphant return of the Hermitage Piano Trio, last seen in the area in 2016. Barry Plaxen, publisher of the D&H Canvas said of the performers, “Each a soloist in his own right, they imbue their chosen selections with much technical power, inspired phrasing and, most importantly, emotion …”
