The Grahamsville Little World’s Fair will be held from August 17 - 19 at the Grahamsville Fairgrounds on Route 55.
Welcome!
Dear Readers, The Sullivan County Democrat would like to welcome you to our twenty-fourth edition of “Where to Go, Where to Stay, Where to Dine.” We hope you will keep this handy 64-page guide by your side as your ticket for summer fun in Sullivan County. There is always so much to do in Catskill-Delaware Country we really do not know where to begin. But may we suggest attending our great county fair – the Grahamsville Little World’s Fair (pictured above). For 139 years this fair has been showcasing the agricultural and craft-making communities of our area and the same holds true today. It certainly is an old-fashioned fair which has added rides, entertainment, great food, games, and vendors to make it truly special. For the active family we have golfing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, hiking, biking and fishing in one of the most beautiful areas in all of New York State. We have several mini-guides inside this issue and also plenty of advertisers to help get you on the right path with that “active” lifestyle. For those who prefer the arts and entertainment or a touch of shopping and fine food, what better place to start than right here. We have the oldest summer stock theater in all of New York State – the Forestburgh Playhouse – which opened its doors to rave reviews on June 12 and has a full summer of great theater ahead. Of course Bethel Woods Center for the Arts will keep you entertained during its 12th season and many of our hamlets and villages offer great shopping, wonderful restaurants and more than a dozen museums are dotted throughout the county. So get on your travel shoes, crack open our wonderful guide and explore everything Sullivan County has to offer. And make sure you tell them… Where to Go, Stay & Dine sent you!

Time & the Valleys Museum to host 1930s Catskill Farm Hoedown

n Saturday, July 28 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Time and the Valleys Museum will be hosting a 1930s Catskill Farm Hoedown at the museum on St. Rt. 55 in Grahamsville, Sullivan County. Back in the 1930s, neighbors, family and friends had good times socializing and dancing to live music during warm summer evenings. The museum is inviting everyone to join with them to recreate those good old times for one night, at an old-fashioned 1930s country hoedown! Held outdoors behind the museum, the hoedown will include live music by the Country Travelers with Paul Lounsbury, Bob Hunt, Dave Trestyn, Bill Engle and dance caller Patty Legg, dancing and square dancing in the museum’s restored 1870s barn, delicious 1930s themed food catered by the Neversink General Store, an entertaining Pie Auction, a special “sneak peak”
Short Track Racing in a Park-like Atmosphere. THE SAVE ! DATE

New stores like The Secret Garden and The Jeff Junction are joining anchors like Peck’s Market to bring a fresh vitality to the village. And dining is back in full swing as Ted’s Restaurant, Bo Loon City, Michaelangelo’s and Tavern on Main, among others, are preparing for a busy summer. There is plenty to do and see in Jeffersonville, and parking your car along the main thoroughfare and walking along the scenic Main Street is the best way to capture the full beauty of this village. pianist and vocalist Michael Ferreri and Friends. John Hoglund from Backstage’s “Bistro Bits” calls Ferreri “One of the most engaging performers I've seen in a while.” And music critic Christopher Byrne says Ferreri is that “Rare artist who combines a uniquely personal talent with a rich musicality.” The SMF’s Sunset Concert Series continues on Thursday, August 9 with The Argus Quartet in an Evening of Chamber Music. New York Classical Review says the Argus Quartet features “polished playing, good ensemble, and clear phrasing … with impressive power,” and Stephan Bonfield from The Calgary Herald says, “They played with supreme melodic control and
total authority.” On Saturday, August 11, An Evening of Chamber Music returns with “Music from Copland House,” the acclaimed resident ensemble at Aaron Copland’s National Historic Landmark home in New York. The concert will include the music of Milhaud, Debussy and Stravinsky. The Tuesday, August 14 Sunset Concert stars the Contista Piano Trio most successful alumni of the SMF’s Educational Program, Anna Federova. This “Evening of Piano Masterworks” will feature Federova’s “unbounded musical joy, excellent technique, percussive drive, pointed exuberance, and emotional, keystroking intimacy" – (l'Adige, Rovereto, Italy). The SMF’s popular Evening of Chamber Music returns on Thursday, August 16 with the Contista Piano Trio. Local music critic Barry Plaxen of The Catskill Chronicle and DH Canvas calls their performance, “the finest I have ever witnessed …” Closing the SMF’s Sunset Concert Series on Saturday, August 18 will be the 25th Anniversary Gala Concert

featuring Sara Davis Buechner on piano with the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players. The New York Times praises “The breadth of Ms. Buechner’s artistry, spanning thundering fortissimos and chiseled passagework, as well as lyrical moments colored by a poetic sensitivity that was tempered by wit and judicious restraint,” and The Washington Post says, “Buechner’s performance ... with its soft contours and liquid, legato phrasing ... had a beauty that might have taken even Mozart's breath away.” This final concert of the 2018 Sunset Concert Season is lovingly dedicated to Maestro Jens Nygaard & The Jupiter Symphony. It was in 2001 that Nygaard, Buechner and the Jupiter Symphony inaugurated the SMF’s Sunset Concert Pavilion. It was Nygaard’s final concert before his passing. All Sunset Concerts take place at the SMF’s Sunset Concert Pavilion located at 442 J. Young Road, Livingston Manor, NY 12758.

Professionals: Matt Kleiner and Davis Tuttle. Pro’s favorite hole: My favorite hole at the Villa Roma is the 15th. The par five is reachable in two shots if I hit a good drive. After striking the second shot it’s always exciting while the ball is in the air. You just never know for sure if you carried it enough to clear the hazard if you take a direct line to the flag. If you aim left and try to hit a little fade, you then waiting on the first bounce to the green. To long it goes in the bunker too short it could kick right into the hazard. Very exciting shot on a very good hole.
