or some, prolonged outdoor activity is a scarce thought during winter in the Catskill Mountains. But if you can take the cold, there is much fun to be had. Here are just a few examples... ICE FISHING One great source of winter fun is ice fishing. Make a hole, and

see what you’ll catch. The region has several exciting and competitive ice fishing events. For example the Hurleyville Fire Department Ice Fishing Contest, which normally takes place at Morningside Park, is still slated for the second Saturday in February. For more info, call Jack Halchak at 845796-8598. King of the Ice, which is presented by the Sullivan County Conservation Club, is also still on

SNOWSHOEING/ SNOW MOBILES Two more fun winter activities are snowshoeing and riding through the snow on a snowmobile. As for the former, be on the lookout for any smallscale snowshoe events this winter, as many of the larger events have been canceled because of the pandemic. But if you have a pair of snowshoes, and Mother Nature is cooperating with generous amounts of snow, you can snowshoe anywhere! And in regard to snowmobiling, if you don’t have a large enough area on your property, visit www.traillink.com/stateactivity/ ny-snowmobiling-trails/ to find the closest trails.

across the county. And the Celebrate Life Half Marathon usually kicks the season off. On March 14, 2021, the race will once again bring runners together on a beautiful course in Rock Hill for one purpose: bonding survivors and families in triumph. Celebrate Life honors, remembers and celebrates those who have fought against cancer. The race annually raises funds to assist cancer patients in their financial needs donating 100 percent of the proceeds to patients in treatment. At this time, the race is still planned to be in-person with the option of taking part virtually. For more info, visit celebratelifehalfmarathon.com.

Ways to beat cabin fever BY ISABEL BRAVERMAN

I

t’s safe to say most people have gotten comfortable with staying at home during this past year (for obvious reasons). This winter we’ll have to deal with the colder temperatures and the pandemic. While this might not be like a normal winter, here are some ways you and your family can beat the winter blues.

Play games Nothing passes the time like having fun. Stock up on board games and card games that you can play with family members this winter. Or you could also play classics like charades or Scrabble. Or maybe it’s time to finally learn how to play chess.

Get outside Even though it’s cold out getting some fresh air can do wonders. There are many benefits to taking a

walk, even for 15 to 30 minutes. It increases heart and lung health, reduces risk of heart disease and stroke, increases muscle strength and endurance and boosts your mood.

stay happy and healthy during the winter. With the sun going down earlier it’s easy to fall into the doldrums. Think of things that make you feel calm and try to do it on a regular basis. This could be yoga, meditation, taking a bath, etc.

Cook a delicious meal With a lot of time at home it’s a great time to try out a new recipe. Stay nice and cozy with a delicious and healthy soup or something comforting like lasagna. Find local veggies like potatoes, turnips, parsnips and squash at the farmers market.

Start a new hobby What to do with all that time spent at home? Try out a new hobby such as knitting, baking bread, photography, whatever you can think of! There are plenty of tutorials online.

Pick up a book Snow much fun A great activity for kids and adults too is playing in the snow. Go sledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and more. You can get equipment rentals from Morgan Outdoors in Livingston Manor.

We didn’t say you have to read it… just kidding! Now is the time to finally get some reading done. You probably have a stack of books piling up that you’ve been meaning to get to. Start a virtual book club with friends.

Be cheesy this winter

W

ith these uncertain times, there are many nights I turn to a good meal for comfort and happiness. This cheesy chili isn’t clean eating or “weight watcher approved,” but it certainly is comforting and has all the qualities I am looking for in a quick and easy winter weeknight meal. This recipe is so similar to queso, that you could eat it with chips as a zesty snack and is guaranteed to please a crowd. To make this cheesy chili, you will need two pounds ground beef, two medium onions chopped, two garlic cloves minced, three cans (10 oz each) diced tomatoes and green chiles undrained,

two cans chopped green chiles, and two lbs Velveeta cheese. In a large saucepan, cook the beef, onions and garlic until the meat is no longer pink. Drain and then stir in the tomatoes, chiles, and season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat, and simmer uncovered for 10-15 minutes. Stir in cheese until melted and serve immediately. Feel free to spice this dish up even more with hot sauce, top with oyster crackers, or raw onions. This cheesy chili may be frozen for up to three months and makes 12 servings! If you enjoy Queso dip, this is a recipe you won’t want to miss out on! This recipe will please a crowd and your tastebuds this winter.

VIP Fitness moves to Jeffersonville STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM

A

lmost a decade ago, Dustin Pritzert opened the first Crossfit gym in the county –– VIP Fitness –– in Liberty. After several years on the village’s main street, he recently made the decision to relocate a few miles away to Jeffersonville’s main street, at 4889 State Route 52, the former location of the Spice Cafe. He has since helped many clients accomplish their fitness goals. “Helping someone get their first pull up is really exciting,” he said.

“When someone comes to me for help, it’s like a puzzle. You have to find the right words to motivate them and create a fitness plan for them.” Pritzert strives to offer awesome fitness training. “It’s all about you. I want this to be the best part of your day,” he explained. So how does he do it? Pritzert spends several hours each night after VIP Fitness Jeffersonville closes its doors planning each client’s session, from the workouts down to the playlist. “If you trust me to help you reach your fitness goals and I don’t see you in a week, you’re going to get a phone call. Sometimes that little kick is all people need,” he said. VIP Fitness Jeffersonville, like everyone else during the pandemic, has had to make adjustments. Currently only two people are allowed to workout at a time. At left: Dustin Pritzert is the mastermind behind VIP Fitness in Jeffersonville. You can either work out on your own or sign up for personal training with him.

Now all your fitness needs can be met on Jeffersonville’s main street.

During these challenging times, the industry has also seen a paradigm shift. Many of Pritzert’s clients went from signing up for sessions to purchasing their own equipment. However, having top of the line equipment doesn’t replace the expertise that a personal trainer provides. Pritzert believes the level of professionalism offered at VIP Fitness, and his experience with personal training is what separates him from the rest. “You can look online but it will be different than a program put together for you by a profession-

al,” he said. Also, if you experience soreness, a professional knows tips and workouts to help relieve it, which is often better than a self diagnosis. Speaking of equipment, Pritzert invests in the best for his clients. This includes the InBody scan each client gets, which has pinpoint and specific data about your BMI, Basal Metabolic Rate and the percentage of muscle in each section of your body. He also has a Truform manual treadmill that not only provides a good workout but also corrects your running form, in addition to much more.

When Pritzert, a Liberty High School and SUNY Cortland graduate, isn’t prepping for his clients’ workouts, he coaches. He’s currently the SUNY Sullivan JV Men’s Basketball Coach, and was previously a coach at the Sullivan West Central School District. While his business has left his hometown for the time being, Pritzert hopes to return in the future. He recently purchased property in Liberty that will eventually be a crossfit gym of at least 5,000 square feet in size. There will also be plenty of space and equipment for those who want to do their own workouts and not necessarily crossfit. When the Liberty location is open, Pritzert plans to turn the Jeffersonville location into a private fitness studio and still offer personal training there. Back to the present, there are two workout options available at VIP Fitness. The first is for those who just want to use the equipment and work out. Right now, open gym memberships are valid for three months and cost $75 for 10 sessions. The second option is personal training from Pritzert, which includes an InBody scan and the personalized workout plans. “It’s about making them happy,” he said. “They set the goals and the timelines.” Ten personal training sessions is $350. If you’re interested in signing up for a class, you can do so on the Wodify app. For more info, call (845) 4822514 or reach out on their Facebook page.

Even if you don’t sign up for personal training, if Pritzert isn’t preoccupied with a client, you’ll still be able to benefit from his experience and advice. These free weights are just one fitness avenue at his studio.

KNOCK OUT YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION!

Each January people across the globe set a number of goals to accomplish in the new year, many of which are fitness related. Here are five tips from Pritzert on how to achieve them... (1) Don’t start your day with sugar: Sugar is addictive. The more sugar you eat in the morning, the likelier you are to make a sugary or high carb lunch decision. Try drinking your coffee black or with only a small bit for cream. (2) Eat more veggies: Pritzert said you can never have too many. He said a lot of times when we think we are hungry, we really just want something. He recommends you have some veggies to quench your cravings, and that’ll tell you how hungry you really are. (3) Get a workout buddy: “Fitness is tough and having an accountability buddy is huge,” he said, adding that people with workout buddies have higher success in achieving fitness goals. (4) Set realistic goals: “A lot of my resolutions fail because of unrealistic timelines,” he said. “If you want to lose 50 pounds, at the end of the month, losing 810 pounds is a more realistic goal.” (5) Hire a trainer: “It’s what we do,” he said. “Trust in a trainer to help you reach your goals. My clients like coming here and not having to think.”

inter is here! Living in the Catskills and seeing the beautiful snowfall can seem like a winter wonderland. While it can be, there are some hidden dangers if you are not careful. But if you prepare and be aware, you can enjoy all the joys of winter in Sullivan County. Snow can look beautiful as it falls, but probaby less so when you have to go out and shovel or snow blow. If you are shoveling heavy snow, you have to be careful if you have a heart condition as many people die of heart attacks while shoveling, according to the Harvard Medical School. You want to take it slow and rest often. If the snow is too heavy and too much, you might want to call someone else to do it for you. The same goes for using your snowblower. You want to operate it safely, with no one playing around you. Before the winter, it’s a good idea to give your snowblower a tune-up. This means changing the oil, greasing the augers, changing the spark plugs, and making sure all the screws and bolts are tight. If you don’t know how to do this on your own, find a local shop to help you

According to Wendy, her favorite part of the job is seeing all the people in the community they've come to help with their automotive needs. "We work on a lot of classic and antique cars, and I love coming in to see the different vehicles they're working on," Wendy said. "Word has gotten out that we do that type of work, and it's sort of grown from there." Wendy said that classic cars had always been a passion for Tom, who started out working at a garage owned by his grandfather and later managed Milton Gaebel Bus Co. for his father for 25 years, also serving

as a school bus driver. "He loved tinkering with the old stuff, and Cory learned a lot from his dad and on his own. He's got that kind of mind," Wendy said. Besides working on antique and classic cars, Manor Motors offers a wide range of servicing, tire work, brake work and alignments and body work. Wendy said they see an increase in clients during the winter months. People often wait until the first snowstorm to get ready for the season, but she recommends thinking about the kind of hazardous driving conditions you'll face each winter earlier in the season. "We appreciate it when people think about it in October," she said with a laugh. "Not everybody lives
