Improving all the time: athletics offers outlet ard work, sweat, and a sense of accomplishment. It has been a long time since the editors and writers of the Sullivan County Democrat have been running around a gym practicing basketball, track or wrestling, but we can still remember the long, cold nights on a bus, travelling to Tri-Valley and the fun we had with our teammates during one of the longest seasons of the year – winter sports. Today, those trips have become even longer, as many of Sullivan County schools now travel to Orange, Ulster and Dutchess counties to fulfill their league and non-league schedules. But the camaraderie, sportsmanship and sweat equity which is required to build a competitive team has not changed. Many of the coaches we interviewed for this Winter Sports Guide had the same feeling, “Improve one game at a time.” And that is really all you can ask of your athletes and coaches, continue to improve as the season goes on. Locally, there are some exceptional athletes who are making this season fun to watch and some strong teams – both girls and boys – who should be vying for divisional and sectional championships come the end of the season. We are delighted to see strong participation numbers in many schools and although one sport, downhill skiing, has gotten off to a rough start, it looks like they will finally be able to hit the slopes this week and start competing once again. We encourage fans to get off the couch and spend a night cheering on your local school team. We have included the schedules in this edition and will certainly be there with you, snapping photos and reporting on the games. Show your community pride, support our youth and cheer on… it sure beats sitting home.

Coach: David Binkowski 2014-15 record: 5-15 Key returning players: Andrew Halloran, David Powers, Dylan Wolff, Noah Clemmons Key losses to graduation: Nick Wyss Team strengths: Speed and will. Our boys don’t quit, which is a testament to their character. Where to improve: Execution and staying healthy. Our rebounding has gotten much better as has our decision-making as the season has progressed. But we have to be smart and improve our weaknesses and take care of our bodies. Season’s goals: “Our goal from Day 1 has been to win the Class D State Title. We have the talent to go far – it’s a matter of hustle and execution.” Key games: Every game on our schedule. Coach’s comment: “We started the pre-season and season with a lot of confidence having success over larger schools and competing with them, but early-season injuries that amounted to losses against really good teams hampered our success. We've shown that when we're healthy, we can play with anyone, but the question is ‘can we stay healthy and translate that into success in league play’? We have six seniors so I’m putting my trust in them that we can continually improve over the next few weeks and meet our goals.” Good Luck for a winning season. Go Yellowjackets!

Eldred girls strive for excellence

Coach: Ryan Jasper 2014-15 record: 16-4, 4-0 league won Section IX Class D title Key returning players: Sheila Burns, our leader on the floor and team captain; Kelsey Collins, team captain and standout center; senior guard Jenna Burns. Key losses: None to graduation; small forward Destinee Arnold moved out of the district. Team strengths: “We have three strong seniors returning this year as well as a talented group of younger players.” Where to improve: “Getting our younger players familiar with our system and the varsity level of competition...getting them some game time experience so they are able to take the reins next year when our seniors graduate. Also getting them used to the expectations we have built up here over the past few seasons.” Season’s goals: “Our goal is to work as hard as we can this season and hopefully be in contention for league and sectional titles.” Key games: Seward, O’Neill, Cooperstown, Fallsburg, Burke and Coleman. So far this season: “We played nine games from December 2-22 which was pretty much a game every other day – all against some pretty good competition. While it's not ideal to play that many games that early in the season, our goal was to schedule as many tough teams as we could this year and that's just where some of them happened to fall. We had a good break where we were finally

able to make some adjustments and hopefully we will be hitting our stride here in the middle of the season. There are so many good, wellcoached teams out there and we will do our best to be prepared as best we can for each game.” Coach’s comment: “We have a great group of kids here playing for us. Our goal is to come in each day and be a better player at the end of practice than we were before. If we do this, then we have a chance to defend our sectional championship from last season.”

Coach: Beth Quatrale 2014-15 record: 5-12 Key returning players: Senior Karisa Yoli and freshman Kelsey Morgans. Key losses to graduation: Desarae Howard Team strengths: “We are extremely athletic and quick and play with a ton of heart. Where to improve: “We need to handle the ball with more confidence. Season’s goals: “To get better every single day and make a push for sectionals. Each of our girls has personal goals set for this season and as we begin to accomplish them, we will grow as a team. Key games: “I feel that all of our league games will be important for us to focus on one at a time. The team always looks forward to playing Burke after we lost to them in overtime last season. Both Burke games will happen after the winter break so it will be a good test to see where we stand in this league. Coach’s comment: “Our freshman guard, Kelsey Morgans, has continued to show a lot of progress this season. After four games she is averaging 20 points per game. She is acting as a leader for our team by example on the court. She has started to learn how to control the tempo of the basketball game. I am very proud of how hard she works and excited to see how she will fair against some bigger schools.

Coach: Dave Slater 2014-15 record: 8-12; 3-1 league; qualified for sectionals and won opening round game Key returning players: Seniors Grant Harman, Tarik Johnson, Caleb Phillips, Andrew Phillips; Sophomore Roy Penn-Cosentino. Key losses to graduation: Stephen Johnson Team strengths: Confidence gained from football success. Said Grant Harman: “I think our big football season will definitely influence our basketball season, and so far it has carried over. We are looking forward to taking it a game at a time and getting back into sectionals. Said Coach Slater, “We are still a team trying to find our identity. If we may have an advantage over some teams it could be our length if we can take advantage of it. Where to improve: One negative of the long football season was it cut down on basketball practice time at the beginning of the season. “We need to continue to get better on defense and rebounding. Season’s goals: “To win the division and qualify for sectionals. And to work on getting better every game and showing growth and improvement. Key games: “As always our key games are against Fallsburg and O'Neill, which are divisional rivals. Coach’s comment: “After making sectionals last year, we hope to advance further into the sectional field. It was a great experience to not only win the division but to host two sectional games – something that Liberty basketball hasn’t done in a long time. But also it should be recognized that an equally impressive task was that they were also recognized with a NYSPHSAA Scholar/Athlete Team Award for having a 90.29 average.

We have quick and athletic guards in Donavan, Alberto Florez, Jaquan Poole-Porter, and Terrell Goodson. Kyle is a versatile player who adds some size inside and can step out to shoot the three.” Where to improve: “We have two sophomores and five juniors, so we don't carry a lot of experience. Our young players need to continue to improve and adjust to varsity level basketball. I always think that we can be better on defense and more efficient on offense – things we work on everyday. Season’s goals: “We want to be the hardest working team – practice and games and never want to be outworked. In terms of winning, our players want to hang another banner; we want to win our division, which will give us a top seed in the section
