Don’t let the name fool you, this is a world-class event STORY AND PHOTOS BY ELI RUIZ

ew York State’s longest running independent fair is back this year in its 134th iteration, and organizers for the Grahamsville Little World’s Fair are preparing for another huge turnout for the event that attracts folks not just from throughout Sullivan County, but the entire Tri-State area. Held this year on August 16th, 17th and 18th, in the more than a century that the Little World’s Fair has been in continuous production, it has become a part of the fabric of Sullivan County, and such a high profile event certainly requires a lot of work and preparation to pull off. “It’s really kind of an ongoing thing,” offered Little World’s Fair Director and President Kathy Bender. “We start with planning and strategy, meeting about once a month beginning in January, that’s when preparations

Only a week ago this pavilion was nearly empty, now these volunteers make it ready for the various animals that will spend fair days here with their 4-H and farm families.

really start. Even immediately after the fair is over we get together and talk about what worked and what didn’t, so it’s quite a long process… we aim to put on a world-class event.” But much more is involved in the preparations for the annual event. In early January, organizers begin solicit-

ing advertisers for the Little World’s Fair program, entertainers get booked in March, vendors are secured from April to June, and then work on the fairgrounds begins in July. Having surely tried many different

things over the many years the fair has existed, organizers will be trying something new this year: Thursday night “Carload Night.” It allows, for one night, for a carload of revelers to enjoy the fair and unlimited access to the rides for one flat fee. It will be held between 5–9 p.m. and require a $40 flat fee for a carload of up to eight people. And the Little World’s Fair isn’t even the only fair held on the grounds, as the 4-H Fair (aka Sullivan County Youth Fair) gets its start a little early on the 15th with its renowned animal show. Organized by Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program, the smaller fair allows children to have their work judged and possibly garner them the Danish ribbon awards they so covet. The tractor pull will, as always, be a huge draw for folks, as will the dozens of vendors who will be on the grounds, but the entertainment acts and the

rides are always the most popular of the tons of activities available. This year will be no different in that respect as acts like Kenny Young Band, Hotrod, Roller Cats Band, Thunder Ridge, Somerville Brothers and many more will be on-hand with an eclectic mix of music for all tastes. Kids and families haven’t been forgotten as far as entertainment is concerned either, as acts the likes of the Catskill Puppet Theater, Matt Stevens Magician and Balloon Artist, and the Delaware Valley Raptor Center will this year be presenting what is sure to be the very popular “Close Encounters with Birds of Prey.” The antique car show is also sure to be a big draw. “We always aim to put on the best fair possible, and this year is no different,” said Bender. “We know people from all over are looking forward to this… if Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Leader Linda Kays of Callicoon stands with her 4-H group, the weather cooperates this year the Moo-Juicers, as they take a break from helping prepare the animal barns on the fairgrounds. A 38-year 4-H leader, Kays is standing right of center with blonde hair and glasses. it should be big.”

Above, the Gary and Mary May Schmidt family of Forestburgh joined the many local families enjoying the fair last year. You’re apt to see your neighbors there, as well as people from all over the tri-state region who make it a point to visit the Little World’s Fair yearly. In some families it’s a tradition to attend – and that’s something to flap your arms about!
