The 135th Little World’s Fair:
No matter how many times you’ve visited, there’s always more to see at this real country fair STORY BY DAN HUST
Y
ou’ll probably notice something quite different when you arrive at the Little World’s Fair this August 15-17. The centerpiece of the Fair – which is why it’s known as the “midway” – will be all-new. “It will be a different atmosphere,” promises Cathy Bender, president of the Fair’s organizer, the Neversink Agricultural Society. “It will be a new look and feel.” Bob and Kathy DeStefano will make sure of that through their company Dreamland Amusements. This is the first time Dreamland will be running the Little World’s Fair midway, but the company has been in business for more than 30 years. They helped establish the Suffolk County Fair on Long Island, are a major presence at the Florida State Fair, and are arriving in Grahamsville fresh off the Ulster County Fair. “We like quaint little towns like this,” Bob affirms. Their efforts, however, are anything but “little.” The DeStefanos personally oversee the setup, operation and teardown of every ride – and what rides they’ll be! • A 70-foot-tall Ferris wheel • The dizzying Himalaya ride, which goes backwards and forwards • The Dreamcatcher, where up to 16 friends can spin and swing at the same time • Anchors Away, taking parents and kids higher than any pirate ship has ever gone • The brand new Delusion, straight from the Delaware State Fair, which must be seen to be believed Plenty of the traditional favorites will also be available, along with games and family-friendly amusements. If all goes as planned, Dreamland will even provide an ATM for tickets and other purchases.
The Dream Catcher is sure to get your blood flowing as riders are turned around in this fantastic fun ride. Other new rides will also be on the midway thanks to this year’s new vendor – Dreamland Amusements.
The DeStefanos are looking forward to making an impression – and a good one has already been made on them. “The Fair’s board has really done a fabulous job all these years,” says Bob. And that goes back a long way – 135 years, in fact. So even with all that’s new, you can rest assured that the Fair’s old-time feel – from 4-H exhibits to horse shows to funnel cakes – will be everpresent. “We like the old-fashioned, agricultural side of it,” promises Cathy. “You can still let your kids run around,
and they won’t get lost!”
COME ON DOWN! The Fair is offering some special admission deals this year: • Carload Night – on Thursday, August 14 (the night before the Fair officially opens to the general public), from 5-9 p.m. only the midway itself will be open, and carloads of up to eight people will be admitted for just $25 per car, with unlimited rides • Unlimited Ride Bracelets – on Friday, August 15 from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday, August 17 from noon to 7 p.m., all ride bracelets are $20 (or $15 if you use a coupon from
Dreamland at dreamlanddiscounts. com) • On Saturday, August 16, rides will be available via tickets only, which each cost $1 (usually three and four tickets are needed per ride) • General Admission (including live entertainment but not rides) – $6 for ages 12-74, $2 for ages 5-11 and free for ages 0-5 and 75+ • Parking is free • General Fair Hours – 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on Friday, August 15; 9 a.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday, August 16; and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday, August 17 Visit www.grahamsvillefair.com and follow the Fair on Facebook!

he Delaware Valley Raptor Center will be hosting three of its educational programs “Close Encounters with Birds of Prey” during the Grahamsville Little World’s Fair this August. The program, normally presented by either DVRC Director Bill Streeter or Associate Director Jan Lucciola focuses on various topics to educate the public regarding birds of prey. Topics covered include predator/ prey relationships, the “evil” predator myth, raptor identification, rehabilitation, raptor conservation, the ancient art of falconry and much more. Five or six live birds of prey are used in the program, giving audiences the chance to get a close look at birds including the Bald Eagle, owls, falcons, hawks and other raptors. The DVRC is a not-for-profit raptor rehabilitation center in Milford, PA, with a focus on returning injured raptors back to the wild. If birds cannot be returned to the wild, the DVRC uses them for educational purposes including the “Close Encounter” program in more than 120 shows a year to over

Family of Eagle Scouts ensures Fair and town are well-kept STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAN HUST
I
t takes a community to put a fair together, and that sometimes involves the whole family. The McKeons, for instance, have turned helping others into a family tradition. Sean and Lynn McKeon’s youngest son, Logan, has spent the past few months preparing to install eight new benches around the main horse ring at the Little World’s Fairgrounds in
Grahamsville. “I figure there are a lot of elderly people who come down here,” he said, noting the dearth of seating in the ring area (unless you’re up for sitting on the ground). “These should last 20-25 years.” With help from his parents and brothers, Logan got the pressuretreated slabs of lumber firmly anchored in the ground, stained and ready for fairgoers by the end of July. And as a result, by the time you read
Brothers Brent, Logan and Zack McKeon (from left to right) have been a team on Eagle Scout projects more than once.
The Registration Booth at the Little World’s Fair got a new lease on life four years ago thanks to Brent McKeon and family, who rehabbed the aging building as part of Brent’s Eagle Scout project.

this, he’ll be well on his way to becoming an official Eagle Scout – the highest recognition bestowed on a Boy Scout. Logan, 16, is a member of Troop 97 in Neversink, as were his brothers before him. Indeed, both Zack, 21, and Brent, 22, reached the rank of Eagle during their Scouting years. Brent’s Eagle Scout project also focused on the fairgrounds, where he rebuilt the Registration Booth four years ago. “It was collapsing,” he recalled.

Family and friends helped him redo the floor joists, stabilize the roof supports, level out the building, and repaint its sides. Flower boxes were added to each corner, and new electrical wiring was installed. Brent is now a wildlife management major at SUNY Cobleskill – the same school as brother Zack, who is studying fisheries and aquaculture. Zack chose to apply his Eagle Scout project efforts toward the FallsburgNeversink Cemetery, which sits in the shadow of the Neversink Dam.

Relocated along Divine Corners Road from the area flooded by the Neversink Reservoir decades ago, the cemetery is maintained by an association but had suffered from vandalism. After clearing out trees felled by a recent storm, Zack and crew straightened crooked tombstones, raised fallen stones and repaired broken ones – some weighing over 500 pounds. They then used old records to plot out 25 unmarked gravesites and planted crosses (made out of recycled plastic) to ensure each grave was treated with dignity. Then, to make it easier on those who mow the lawn, Zack dumped a load of topsoil and spread it around to flatten the dips and rises in the cemetery. Finally, he rebuilt the stone walls surrounding the 1.5-acre cemetery, all at no expense to the association. “They were running out of money,” he said, noting that without funds, the association would have had to hand the cemetery over to the state. “It let them keep con-
trol over it a little longer.” A relative of one of the deceased liked the results so much that they made a sizeable donation to the association, further extending the impact of Zack’s good deeds. That was four years ago, but in late July, you could find him and the rest of the McKeons once again putting hand to shovel and sweat to brow. So when you find yourself sitting on the “best seats in the house” at the fairgrounds this year, breathe a little thanks to a family – and a community – that’s never stopped caring.
