VIET CONG VIET CONG Newspaper Spoons Pointless Experience March of Progress Bunker Buster Continental Shelf Silhouettes Death

CATALOG #: JAG260 RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 20, 2015 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE / INDIE ROCK KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK, PHILADELPHIA, LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO, PORTLAND, CALGARY, TORONTO, MONTREAL, QUEBEC, BOSTON, SEATTLE, ATLANTA, WASHINGTON DC, AUSTIN, CHICAGO, INDIANAPOLIS TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: EX. CANADA VINYL NOT RETURNABLE CD UPC: 656605226026

It takes less than sixty seconds of album opener "Newspaper Spoons" for you to decide that Viet Cong is a winter record. The album has barely begun, and the guitar doesn't snarl until the end of that opening minute, but it still presents a palpable iciness in just a few short moments. It's bitter. It stings. But once you're in it, and you're bracing yourself and charging ahead, "Newspaper Spoons" moves from a punishing, almost militarized drumbeat to a melody that's still menacing but also delicate, almost celestial. That instinct for humanizing a stone-cold song is Viet Cong's greatest gift and sharpest weapon. It's harsh, but exhilarating. Recorded in a barn-turned-studio in rural Ontario, the seven songs that make up Viet Cong were born largely on the road, when Flegel and bandmates Mike Wallace, Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen embarked on a 50-date tour that stretched virtually every limit imaginable. Close quarters hastened their exhaustion but also honed them as a group. With all four members traveling in one car, the mood conflated with the soundtrack, the soundtrack with the cities around them, and so forth. There was repetition, but it was all different. This combined with the grey, chilly emptiness of Calgary rendered a record with a viscerally rugged vibe, one that Flegel even describes as "shit earth." "Continental Shelf " orbits a thousand-watt hook with a thick crackle and a battering-ram drum line. It's so arresting that you barely notice it doesn't have a chorus, and then in comes a line like "if we're lucky we'll get old and die" and you can't believe Leonard Cohen (or Trent Reznor, or Nick Cave, or Sinatra) didn't get to it first. "Silhouettes" is a tripwire of a song, opening with an almost Joy Division-esque exposition and moving at breakneck speed -- frantic and pitch-black at a thousand miles an hour -- until before you know it they are howling. Actually howling, and maybe you are too. You can designate records as seasonal, and you can feel Viet Cong's bleakness and declare it wintry. But the only way you get a frost is when there's something warmer to freeze up. So yes, Viet Cong is a winter album, but only until it is a spring record, then a summer scorcher, then an autumn burner, then it ices over again. They build these buildings, and they're built to break.

PERFECT PUSSY

I HAVE LOST ALL DESIRE FOR FEELING 1xLP/CD • Hometown:: Syracuse, NY • Playing Australia/New Zealand’s Laneway Festival in February 2015

“Punk rock revelations like Perfect Pussy don’t come along often enough. They’ve got it all: great riot-feminist name, excellently miserable hometown (Syracuse, New York), ragingly chaotic live shows and a noise-assault donnybrook of a debut EP that’s right up there with Yeezus among 2013’s freshest headaches.” Rolling Stone “This band is going to be part of your life for the foreseeable future.” Pitchfork

Just over a year after playing their first show as a band, Perfect Pussy have quickly made a name for themselves as one of the most intense bands in the indie rock and hardcore punk communities, both live and on record. Their fast rise to success all stemmed from this 4 track demo EP, originally released as a cassette only. Simply title tracks such as “I” and “IV” garnered praise from everyone to Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, to NPR and the New York Times, landing the on countless year end lists.

Over the past few years we have watched Mac develop from a cult artist to a strandout figure amongst the realm of the indie=mainstream. From bedroom sessions to a string of chritical accoldates, Mac is a true role-model for the young musician tinkering with their 4-rack tape recorder in a suburban bedroom - a sincere example of humble beginnings and honest, hard-earned acclaim

RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 20, 2015 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/INDIE These demos include several unreleased tracks on top of demos of songs we know and love from ‘Salad Days’ and ‘2’. SISKIYOU Nervous CD / 180gLP / DL

RELEASE DATE: 20 JANUARY 2015 3rd album from the group led by Colin Huebert and Erik Arnesen (Great Lake Swimmers) “carefully crafted, perfectly balanced, addictively melodic” – ROCK-A-ROLLA “in cold surroundings, moments of warmth arrive with life-affirming brightness, and that’s what makes Siskiyou’s music so memorable” – BLURT

Siskiyou returns with Nervous, a majestic album of carefully constructed art rock built around songwriter and lead singer Colin Huebert's stacked acoustic guitars and intimate, whispery vocals. Siskiyou’s sound has been previously dubbed a sort of ‘Northern Gothic’, conjuring cold winds and the life-saving warmth of temporary shelters and tiny hearth fires. With Nervous, the band continues to push beyond the crisp lo-fi intimacy of its early work, and has forged its most confident and finely-crafted recording to date, moving fully into auteur and chamber-pop territory with a song cycle that brings to mind the meticulousness of mood and sonics found in recent work by PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and Tindersticks. Inflected by an anxious, sussurant restraint, Huebert's voice is supported by the falsetto backing vocal counterpoint and economical instrumentation of bandmates Erik Arnesen, Peter Carruthers and Shaunn Watt. Fans of the understated and underrated 1990s group Swell may also hear a welcome evocation of that group's acoustic guitar-driven simplicity and austere deployment of adornments. Following Siskiyou's excellent sophomore release Keep Away The Dead in 2011, Huebert became afflicted with a serious inner ear condition that eluded conventional diagnosis. While honouring a previously-scheduled songwriting residency in Dawson City, Yukon in winter 2012, Huebert found himself grappling with severe anxiety and an unwelcome interiority, engendered by hyperacusis and a house that felt utterly haunted. Intense chronic ear-ringing and panic attacks continued throughout the year, for which conventional medicine was unable to find any cause or effective treatment; Huebert began focusing on meditation, retreated to silence for a period, and then began rehearsing his new songs with the band at extremely low volumes. The songs on Nervous are shot through with the entirety of this experience: the literal feeling of being trapped in one's head and the physicalpsychological feedback loop of debilitating anxiety; the lyrical themes and tense, whispered singing amidst tightly-wrought compositions and arrangements. Huebert found solace in new working methods within the controlled environment of studio-based production and composition, developing new sonic palettes and pursuing new avenues of instrumental arrangement and recording fidelity. Working with producer/engineer Leon Taheny (Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy, Dusted, Austra) on most of Nervous, Siskiyou has emerged with by far its most assured, ambitious and authoritative recordings, while preserving the economy of elements, deft structures, and assiduous melodic deliberation for which the band has been rightly celebrated over its two previous albums. In charting escape paths from his disquieting cranial confinement, Huebert has very much succeeded in setting his songs out on an expansive canvas, while preserving a palpable sense of nervous interiority and quiet desperation at their heart.

ALEX CALDER

STRANGE DREAMS 1xLP/CD There must be something in the water of Edmonton, Canada that’s gifting it’s songwriters with the ability to write sweet and snug pop melodies. After putting in time with fellow Edmontonian Mac DeMarco in Makeout Videotape, Alex packed away his drums to perfect his song writing. Moving back to his mother’s house, he was able to write and record his first solo effort in 2013 with the Time EP.

Alex Calder’s sophomore release with Captured Tracks is as familiar as it is foreign - brining together both infectious melodies and texture to create tidy, acid-induced pop sequences. Strange Dreams takes a confident step forward from Calder’s previous release and brings the focus and ambition of Alex’s song writing to all aspects of his music. This record delivers, while still maintaining the youthful humour that has become his trademark. RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 20, 2015 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/PSYCHADELIC INDIE POP Tight rhythm’s tie down whirling guitars, sparkling textures bounce off of timeless melodies, and ambitions beyond humble means are realized in Alex Calder’s latest album. Ghostly vibes find their way into his songs that possess a certain sense of urgency, as is unmistakably evident on his lead single, title track Strange Dreams.

Between 1979 and 1982, The Universal Togetherness Band tracked unearthly portions of their sprawling songbook for bewildered students in Columbia College’s audio engineering program. Storming the gates of Chicago’s premier recording studios, the erudite party band explored permutations of soul, jazz-fusion, new wave, and disco with little regard for studio rates or the availability of magnetic tape. Universal Togetherness Band captures the brightest, never-before-heard moments from this visionary group’s 5-semester recording bender. Universal Togetherness Band (CD/LP): The attractive gatefold LP edition boasts magnificent reproductions of never-before-seen images from the archives of Chicago photographer Steven E. Gross. The CD version features several candid snapshots from the group’s personal collections. Meticulously mixed from the original multi-track sessions by Sean Marquand (Phenomenal Handclap Band), Universal Togetherness Band is presented in peak fidelity.

Amen Dunes’ Love took close to a year and a half, 16 musicians, and five different studios to complete. It was a song cycle that required broad experimentation before it was clear what was essential underneath the surface. In that process, much of the sound that might have made it onto the album was lost. There was just too much to say for one record. Cowboy Worship is an attempt to give life to some of the music that didn’t make it past the scalpel. From a blown-out version of “Green Eyes” featuring Harvey Milk’s Stephen Tanner, to a darker and mellower “I Can’t Dig It” as Damon McMahon originally arranged it upon writing the song in China, many of the original intentions for the music that were lost in the Love sessions are revived. In addition is a band version of Through Donkey Jaw’s “Lezzy Head,” featuring Dunes mainstays Jordi Wheeler and Parker Kindred, and most significantly, a shining cover of This Mortal Coil’s interpretation of the Tim Buckley classic, “Song to the Siren,” featuring Ben Greenberg (Hubble) on guitar. Tim Buckley, along with several other singers, from Elvis Presley to Marvin Gaye to Tim Hardin, were the beacons that guided the making of Love. McMahon’s cover of “Song to the Siren” is an homage to the spirit that directed those original sessions. One description that seemed to work for Love was that it was an album of devotional music, and even more specifically, a type of devotional music McMahon called cowboy worship.

ELEPHANT MICAH WHERE IN OUR WOODS WV124 • LP / CD / MP3 RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 20, 2015

ABOUT THIS RECORD For the past 14 years, Elephant Micah’s Joseph O'Connell has quietly self-released his work on CD-R and limited LPs, sometimes collaborating with the psych-folk imprint Time-Lag Records or other very small labels. Despite the project’s almost secretive status, Elephant Micah has repeatedly caught the attention of NPR, and has been championed by an impressive cohort of like-minded artists, including Jason Molina, Hiss Golden Messenger, Dark Dark Dark, Hurray for the Riff Raff. Where in Our Woods, the 12th Elephant Micah album and the first for Western Vinyl, is defined by its limited palette. The arrangements foreground nylon-string guitar and an antique portable pump organ. A stripped-down drum set, a baritone ukulele, a toy recorder, and harmony vocals (sung by Will Oldham, a friend of and key influence on O’Connell) round out the sound. This sparse ensemble leaves O’Connell’s voice room to breathe, while elevating and magnifying the poetry of his songs. The album follows an ensemble cast of human and animal characters as they negotiate the supernatural and the mundane: “Light Side” catalogues a friend’s search for sublime experience through a self-described “redneck mysticism” involving in drugs, sex, and travel. “Rare Beliefs” and “Demise of the Bible Birds” explore the world of a "Bible Bird Man" from Noblesville, Indiana, who trained exotic birds to perform stunning Christian-themed stunts. “Albino Animals” is a modern day journalistic ballad, summarizing three stories found in one edition of O'Connell's hometown newspaper: readers responding to the recent slaying of an albino deer, husband-and-wife meth cooks escape federal prosecution based on an error in legal process, and a rower with local roots attempts a transatlantic passage that ends in disaster. The album closes with “Slow Time Vultures,” which was inspired by the descent of hundreds of migrating vultures on O'Connell's parents’ farm in southern Indiana. At the time of this avian congress, state government was instituting the observance of daylight savings time for the first time in Indiana. As O’Connell explains, "Maybe it goes without saying that the unexplained appearance of a sky full of vultures might seem like a harbinger of doom. I wondered if it related to the time change. At its core, this song is in the tradition of American country songs that express indignation toward the idea of progress." Throughout the album, O'Connell deftly transforms the stuff of everyday American life into a series of entrancing meditations on culture, nature, religion, and modernity.

KAITLYN AURELIA SMITH

EUCLID

WV130 • LP / CD / MP3 RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 20, 2015

ABOUT THIS RECORD Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's formative years were spent communing with nature on Orcas Island in the northwest region of Washington state, a place she describes as "one of the most magical and peaceful places I have ever been." Though she wouldn't begin experimenting with modular synthesis until many years later, her creative work continues to be infused with and inspired by the vitality and serenity of Orcas.

TRACK LIST

Smith left the island to attend Berklee College of Music, where she studied composition and sound engineering, initially focusing on her voice as her primary instrument, before switching to classical guitar and piano. She employed many of the skills she refined in college in her indie-folk band Ever Isles, but a fateful encounter with a neighbor who lent her a Buchla 100 synthesizer, had a profound effect on her. Mesmerized by the Buchla’s potential, she explains "I got so distracted and enamored with the process of making sounds with it that I abandoned the next Ever Isles album." Starting with rhythmic patterns and melodic pulses, she soon began sculpting lush and exciting worlds of sound.

Kaitlyn's solo debut Euclid (primarily written on a Buchla Music Easel synthesizer) was inspired by her love of mbira music, early electronic music pioneers like Laurie Spiegel, Oskar Sala, and Terry Riley, and euclidean geometry. Each of the first six songs on Euclid were initially structured using euclidean geometry, an idea which Smith explored while attending a class at the San Francisco Conservatory. As Smith explains, "We each chose a 3D shape and assigned our own guidelines to the different components that make up the shape. For example each point of the shape represents a different time signature, each line between the points represents a pitch, each shape within the closed lines represents a scale, etc. And then you play the shape." Despite their heady geometric origins, the songs have a playfulness and warmth that makes them inviting and memorable. In addition to the buoyant grooves of Smith's synthesizers, some of the songs feature wordless vocals, which energize the otherworldly songs, while grounding them with Smith's earthly presence.

quotes "...adventurous, mesmerizing sonic compositions which cause me to remember my love of music in the early days of electronic sound making machines." – REGGIE WATTS

She slows things down for the second half of the record, which features a collection of twelve short pieces, Labyrinths I-XII. Originally composed as new soundtracks to old silent films she found online, Smith says the tranquil Labyrinth pieces are "intended to feel like one is walking through a holographic labyrinth and encountering different experiences such as hang gliding, viewing microbes under a microscope, ice fishing in Alaska, and watching glaciers collapse." Despite their brevity, most of these songs feel like mini odysseys, effortlessly casting a cinematic hue on the the listener's world.

“...sheer poetry: charming, playful, evocative, and showing mastery of her medium.” – SUZANNE CIANI

Throughout Euclid Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith consistently delivers sonic puzzles draped in a warm Pacific mist. At times these songs feel so alive — like the musical analog to roots growing deeper and stronger, leaves on branches bending towards the light, or the sun peeking over the horizon, briefly igniting the air with a primordial swirl of warm and cool colors.

CATALOG #: CHIG003 RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 20, 2015 FORMAT: LP/DIGITAL LP BOX LOT: 30 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/ROCK KEY MARKETS: MINNEAPOLIS, ST. PAUL TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NONE VINYL NOT RETURNABLE

It’s been 12 years since the initial release of what would be the very last album by the late Minneapolisbased 12 Rods. Aptly titled, Lost Time, this last epic perfectly defines and captures how great this band was and how truly ahead of their time its members were. Not only that but for its city, a city fueled on such great music, both 12 Rods and this record have gone down as one of Minneapolis' finest. When musicians that I know gather, sit and talk about the greats, Ryan Olcott always comes up. It’s very hard to try and calculate how deep Olcott's genius goes, when at the time, it felt as if the music 12 Rods was making was in fact from the future. There is the ‘Pop’ music that is defined by paid-toplay radio, and the corporate avenues of selling music as a product instead of a natural commodity. But then there is the ‘Pop’ music that seems handed down, majestically, true, whole and unifying. There's little music and even fewer complete albums that live up to such 'Pop' majesty. Lost Time is one. At the time of its release, 12 Rods was in its final form, which included Ryan Olcott and his brilliant brother/engineer/producer Ev Olcott, sought after bassist Bill Shaw, and one of the best living drummers in the world today, Dave King. Lost Time was 12 Rods fifth studio album but their first after being dropped from the deathly heights of mainstream music’s claws. The band was signed by V2 records in the late '90s and were poised to be the next big 'Rock' band. And so when you think back to 2002, the year Lost Time was released, or even two years prior when 12 Rods released its fourth studio album, the Todd Rungren-produced, V2botched Separation Anxieties, you must consider the landscape of 'Rock' music. Like, the popular bands that were on MTV. Lit was one of those hugely popular rock bands that wrote catchy songs about putting hearts in zip-lock bags and had a logo identical to Miller Lite with just the "e" taken off. Though, regardless of aesthetic choices, this goes to show the disparity between what 12 Rods actually was and what the industry wanted them to be. It's not that they openly defied their calling. No, it's just that the music was simply too advanced to be contained in the industries 'Rock 'n Roll' zip-lock.

LP UPC: 656605423319 Lost Time is one of my most listened to albums of all time. It's one of the only records I know of that is so full of hooks, yet never feels recycled or fake; it's just so fucking enjoyable from stem to stern. And now with its first ever vinyl pressing, I hope that this album can be as much a companion to you as it has for me. Solo listen, party listen, how can it be both? It just is. 6
