Foxygen have joined Star Power. It is a punk band, and you can be in it, too. Star Power is the radio station that you can hear only if you believe. We're all stars of the scene.

FOXYGEN…AND STAR POWER is the new DOUBLE ALBUM from Foxygen, a CINEMATIC AUDITORY ADVENTURE for the speedy freaks, skull krunchers, abductees, and misfits...Made by Foxygen at Dream Star Studios in their Secret Haunted House with the UFOs flying around in the sky. A gaggle of guest stars. Roman-numeraled musical suites. Vocals recorded on a shoddy tape machine at The Beverly Hills Hotel and Chateau Marmont. A svelte 82-minute run time of psych-ward folk, cartoon fantasia, songs that morph into each other, weaving in and out of the head like UFO radio transmission skullkrush music. ADHD star power underground revolution. Soft-rock indulgences, D&D doomrock and paranoid bathroom rompers. Process is the point. A kaleidoscoping view. Blasphemy even the gods smile one. Rock and roll for the skull...* *From Patti Smith's 1973 CREEM review of Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star. The section concludes "Todd Rundgren is preparing us for a generation of frenzied children who will dream in animation."

The last WWPJ tour, earlier this year, was the band's best- and fastest- selling tour to date. Almost every major market sold out on both coasts in advance. Now the band present us with Unravelling, easily their most accomplished album, and a new direction in songwriting for the band. Recorded in Glasgow at the infamous Chem19 Studios with Paul Savage (The Twilight Sad, Franz Ferdinand, Mogwai), the album focuses all the power and fury of the Jetpacks to a finely controlled point. These songs focus the power that's always been present in Jetpacks' records to a fine point, crafting from both youthful catharsis and skillful maturity. The band’s spring US tour proved that as much as fans love the chest rattling crescendos of their catalog, they’re equally ready for the bit of sheen that’s found its way to the forefront of the new songs. Particularly instrumental to the widening sound is the addition of new member and longtime friend Stuart McGachan, a multiinstrumentalist described by the band’s Adam Thompson as “an accomplished keys, piano and guitar player as well as having a lovely little singing voice,” all of which added greatly to the development of the band’s new direction. Live, the five-piece setup only adds to the power and bombast that echoes from the stage, but in the studio the new flexibility has lead to an album with widescreen vision, supple emotional shading and particularly catchy hooks laced throughout. WWPJ will embark on a national tour in October, with their fellow countrymen (and FatCat labelmates) The Twilight Sad supporting. If you haven't seen them yet, we promise they'll blow you away. The band have always had huge expectations heaped upon them, and time and time again they always surpass any bar we set.

Key Information / Selling Points: Hometown / Key Markets: • New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago Selling Points / Key Press: • Great press for debut LP Abandon, including a full-page piece in The New Yorker, a print feature in The Fader, and an 8.0 Pitchfork review • Tours with Swans, Godflesh and The Haxan Cloak • Has performed at ATP Festivals in the UK and Iceland • Pitchfork on Abandon: “A dark, visceral, utterly compelling thrill.” Four days before New York noise musician Margaret Chardiet was supposed leave for her first European tour as Pharmakon, she had a medical emergency which resulted in a major surgery. Suddenly, instead of getting on a plane, she was bedridden for three weeks, missing an organ. “After seeing internal photographs taken during the surgery, I became hyperaware of the complex network of systems just beneath the skin, any of which were liable to fail or falter at any time,” Chardiet said. “It all happened so fast and unexpectedly that my mind took a while to catch up to the reality of my recovery. I felt a widening divide between my physical and mental self. It was as though my body had betrayed me, acting as a separate entity from my consciousness.” Consumed by these ideas, and unable to leave her bed, Chardiet occupied herself by writing the lyrics and music that would become Bestial Burden, the second Pharmakon LP for Sacred Bones Records. The record is a harrowing collection of deeply personal industrial noise tracks, each one brimming with struggle and weighted with the intensity of Chardiet’s internal conflict. Bestial Burden was recorded at Heaven Street Records in Brooklyn, N.Y. with Sean Ragon (Cult of Youth, Venerence), who also recorded 2013’s critically acclaimed Abandon. Ragon allowed Chardiet to experiment with a mix of live recording and tracking, and some of the vocals were recorded live with a small group of people packed into the studio so she could feed off their energy. The result of those sessions is the bar-raising follow-up to Abandon, and an invitation to go even deeper into the sometimes terrifying, always fascinating labyrinth that is Margaret Chardiet’s mind.

Museum of Love is the musical project of Pat Mahoney (Founding member of LCD Soundsystem) and Dennis McNany (Jee Day). Longtime friends in New York, McNany and Mahoney found a similar sensibility and a shared vocabulary for interpreting surroundings, something that began with their remix of Battles’ “My Machines feat. Gary Numan” and extended into their creation of a full length record together. Naming their duo in ode to Daniel Johnston’s song of the same named, Mahoney divulges, “I had always loved the song, and had been thinking of what such an edifice would contain when we were trying to name the project.” McNany continues, “Pat’s a sculptor, I’m a painter, we make music and museums are sacred spaces and love is an elusive thing.” McNany did most of the songwriting as well as production and instrumentation, while Mahoney is on vocals and of course, drums, but Museum of Love was an entirely collaborative process as the two edited and arranged tracks in the studio. Mahoney says the process of collaboration was energizing, while McNany simply explains, “making the record was pure pleasure. Waiting for it to come out has been the hardest thing.” “Museum of Love moves at a stately pace here, offering a slow and steady chugger that wraps itself in gauzy vocal layers and takes its sweet time reaching its climactic peak.” Pitchfork

Like the wild goose that the Portland-based trio are named after, the members of Greylag have all undertaken amazing journeys, migrating as if by homing instinct from different parts of the US, to create a self-titled debut album that’s the latest must-have slice of verdant, far-reaching Americana. Greylag is rich in melody, mood and detail with a range that mirrors the distance between their individual birthplaces, creating a personal twist on some timeless musical traditions, embracing electric and acoustic with a sound that’s both subtle and forceful. Meet Andrew Stonestreet (lead vocal, acoustic guitar, originally from West Virginia), Daniel Dixon (lead guitar and other stringed things, keyboards, from Northern California) and Brady Swan (drums, from Texas). The venerated Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, The Shins) produced the album at Seattle’s Avast! Studio, who clearly knows a sublime enterprising combination of roots and rock music when he hears it. The name Greylag looks and sounds strong but has developed more meaning for the band - It’s a wild goose, from which all domestic geese originate, so it’s the first survivor, and it’s still wild, and doing things its own way - the ‘lag’ part refers to it being the last bird to migrate. It sits back and watches. We love the connotation.” The influences range wildly - Dixon talks of Swan’s love of house music whilst Stonestreet grew up with folk and bluegrass. Other named influences that can be spied through those lenses are Led Zeppelin and Portland’s most famous son, the late Elliott Smith. Stonestreet also enthuses about Fleetwood Mac’s 1969 classic Then Play On, Bob Dylan, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Dixon says Neil Young more than CS&N, and also, more surprisingly, the other worldy-ness of Sigur Rós. Greylag is a long distance from the band’s debut, the seven-track EP The Only Way To Kill that Berkeleybased indie Ninth Street Opus, released in 2012. The new record is their first proper recording as a band. This can be sampled in the dynamic sway of “Mama”, “Kicking” and “One Foot” while “Black Sky” and “Walk The Night” illuminate that “spooky” Led Zep III/Buckley axis. “Yours To Shake” and Burn On”, meanwhile, connect the two poles, building from quiet to loud, as Greylag take flight, gloriously. It’s a selective journey, though: though up to 65 demos were recorded, the album is a modest, yet very complete, nine tracks and 37 minutes. The album speaks of individuals who have travelled, emotionally and physically, and put everything into this shared venture. The album artwork is the final touch. It resembles an old hardbound book, with the name pressed into the surface and a symbol above it, roughed up on edges, like something you’d find in a grandfather’s attic, something a little dark and strange and mysterious. It feels modern but it’s inspired by something from an earlier era. Greylag, then: a journey, a quest, a sublime new band and debut album. All indeed is not lost, but found. SELLING POINTS 1. Album was produced by Phil Ek, who has previously worked with Father John Misty, The Walkmen, The Shins, Band of Horses, Built to Spill and more. 2. Band will tour extensively in 2014 and 2015.

BALMORHEA WV125 • LP / CD / MP3 RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 14, 2014

ABOUT THIS RECORD For the past eight years the duo of Rob Lowe and Michael Muller have nurtured and refined their creative partnership as the core members of the band Balmorhea. Though their first album on Western Vinyl Rivers Arms (2008) garnered some remarkable press, their self-titled debut, recorded in 2006 and released in 2007 best captures the duo's unique magic as it first blossomed. With no label, distributor, manager, publicist, or booking agent the duo quietly self-released their first recordings and started playing live shows. Now, seven years later Western Vinyl is honored to have the opportunity reissue the band's self-titled album, and make it available on vinyl for the first time ever.

TRACK LIST

In preparation for this special reissue, the audio was lovingly remastered, drawing out even more of the nuances…magnifying the sounds of Muller and Lowe's fingers on the instruments, and teasing out the textures that set these recordings apart from the rest of their catalog. Simple and sincere, these songs and ambient sounds the duo captured in these recordings are strangely inviting. Throughout the album the distant sounds of Texas grackles, the warm summer rain, the steady rhythm of crickets chirping, and creaking wooden stools, all seeping in to cradle the notes in a restrained din of primordial wonder.

"It's hard to imagine Western Vinyl without Balmorhea. After our fateful meeting in 2007, we forged a deep and lasting relationship we're all grateful for. We met at an Austin performance on the eve of their first US tour in support of their recently self-released debut album. Their show that night was one of the most powerful performances I'd ever seen, and as I looked around the room, it was apparent that I wasn't alone. With the help of a cellist the group briefly transformed the dingy lounge into a vibrant pulsing cell. I had experienced deeply moving shows before, but the ecstatic emotions they conjured were new to me. Calling it electrifying, might sound cliché, but as the hair on my arms and legs stood at attention, my eyes squinted a bit with concentration, and my head cocked to the right, the electricity that passed over me felt very real. Over the next few years I had the pleasure of experiencing dozens of Balmorhea shows, each with a slightly different story to tell." – Brian Sampson, Western Vinyl

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION • In conjunction with this release, we’re releasing a 7” featuring 2 new Balmorhea songs. • Balmorhea’s music has been heard in several national TV commercials, including spots for Toyota, Volvo, and Intel. • A sticker with press quotes will be on the retail album, and the LP jacket will feature gold foil stamping.

PRESS QUOTES "...an exemplary experiment in restraint, lush with a slow-burning, wordless, and ambient Americana that manages to captivate while avoiding the histrionics of its post-rock forebears." THE NEW YORKER "...they create minimalist, cinematic music that combines modern, experimental acoustic sounds with classical qualities." NPR "This — not steak finger baskets or soft-serve ice cream — is what you should like about Texas." The ONION / A.V. THE AISLERS SET H O W I L E A R N E D T O W R I T E B A C K WA R D S The Aislers Set occupy an enviable place in the pop pantheon. Brimming with drunken romanticism, sharp pop sensibilities, and timeless melodies, The Aislers Set reveled in the history of great pop, spiking their classicist 60s-tinged tunes with pure post-punk energy and originality of bands like the Fire Engines and The June Brides. Every song is a meticulously constructed sound world, where the arrangement and instrumentation sublimely and uncannily bring each tune to completeness. Edgy and baroque, the band’s final release "How I Learned To Write Backwards" expertly wound together countless strands of pop history with personality and atmosphere. Using the past as inspiration rather than blueprint, the echoes you might hear of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound or Laura Nyro's soulful lyricism are so well-integrated into The Aislers' sound that they're more akin to the spice in the stew rather than the stock of the soup. Although they stopped playing and recording together by 2004 due to life commitments, their reputation has only grown; sporadic reunion shows and mini-tours have been met with rapturous response. THE APARTMENTS

THE EVENING VISITS... AND STAYS FOR YEARS (Expanded Edition) Born of the small but vibrant Brisbane punk/new wave scene of the late Seventies, Peter Milton Walsh began to cultivate the mysterious, moody myth that would follow him through out his career that has taken him around the world. But before setting out abraod, Walsh certainly made his mark on the Brisbaine scene. His band, The Apartments, formed in 1978 and spent the next year playing ample amounts of shows around Brisbaine. With a reputation that preceeded him, Walsh was saught out by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, members of one of Brisbaine’s most noteworthy bands, The Go-Betweens. Having been offered an 8 album deal by Beserkly Records, Forster and McLennon asked Walsh to join The Go-Betweens as their fourth member in late 1978. The union was, however, short lived. There were personality differences, which led McLennon to famously say “Walsh is night, we are day. We’re sun, he’s rain.”.

After the deal with Beserkly fell through, Walsh returned to The Apartments, leaving The Go-Betweens as a three piece. They went on to affectionately write a song for Walsh, entitled “Don’t Let Him Come Back”, which included the line “Here he comes, with his twelve o’clock junk…who’s that dressed in black? Who’s that in his apartment?”. Things weren’t sour between the two bands and The Apartments recorded their first EP, “Return of the Hypnotist” on The Go-Between’s Able Label. But before the EP was even released, The Apartments broke up and Walsh left for New York City. During his time in NYC, Walsh played mustic with a number of bands and recorded many songs that would serve as demos for future releases for the still defunct Apartments. Returning to Australia in 1984, Walsh got the band back together and recorded a few singles, including “All You Wanted”. All the while the band were also recording demos, which led to a record deal with London’s legendary Rough Trade Records, prompting Walsh to move to London. It was there that he recorded his first proper LP, “The Evening Visits... And Stays for Years”. The album received strong praise and drew comparisons to a wide range of acts such as Cocteau Twins, Nick Drake and Bob Dylan. The NME said of the record ““after whetting our appetites with last year’s classic import single ‘All You Wanted’ The Apartments have stunned us to a reverential silence. This album is a pure heart-wrencher, and should only be listened to after dark.”. Although The Apartments and Walsh continued to tour and record with a variety of line ups, it is these early works that provide a definitive look at their sound. Available all together for the first time, Captured Tracks are pleased to present “The Evening Visits... And Stays for Years” along with “The Return of the Hypnotist”, the “All You Wanted” single and a collection of demos from “The Evening Visits...”. Complete with liner notes by Robert Forster and Walsh himself, this increadible collection of Walsh’s first seven years of recordings is not to be missed.

The acclaimed and highly sought-after LP by Hailu Mergia and the Walias, Tche Belew, an album of instrumentals released in 1977, is perhaps the most seminal recording released in the aftermath of the 1974 revolution. The story of the Walias band is a critical chapter in Ethiopian popular music, taking place during a period of music industry flux and political complexity in the country. !

LAST EX Last Ex CD / 180gLP / DL

RELEASE DATE: 14 OCTOBER 2014 New instrumental rock project of Simon Trottier and Olivier Fairfield from Timber Timbre Also features Timber Timbre frontman Taylor Kirk; on tour with Timber Timbre in fall 2014 Last Ex is the new instrumental rock ensemble led by Simon Trottier and Olivier Fairfield, long active in Quebec's experimental/punk scene, though perhaps best known as core members of Timber Timbre, which spawned the Last Ex project. When Timber Timbre’s ambient music for a horror film went unused back in 2012, Trottier and Fairfield began revisiting the sound palette they had built up for the soundtrack at Fairfield's studio in Hull, Quebec, expanding on their techniques and textures, adding drums, bass and various other instruments. The duo found that they had dug into some very fertile territory, writing additional songs throughout 2013 and bringing their obsessions with sound collage, tape-based music concrète and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to bear on the cinematic lyricism of the initial widescreen guitar- and string-based material. Derived from the title of the abandoned film, Simon and Olivier dubbed their new project Last Ex. Constellation knew nothing of this back story when the label received the Last Ex demos in spring 2014; we just heard a compelling, compact, coherent, highly evocative instrumental album that kept worming its way into our ears. By the tenth time someone in the office said "Let's play that Last Ex stuff again" – and everyone enthusiastically agreed – it was time to contact the band. This music belonged in the Constellation catalogue: an instrumental rock album of superb compositional and melodic sensibility, balancing minimalism and restraint with atmosphere and tone, bound by a refreshingly original approach to production. Last Ex makes ample use of the electric guitar as both lead instrument and textural sound source, structuring most of the pieces around deliberate melodic and contrapuntal deployments of Spaghetti Western twang, while distressing, degrading and redeploying those sonics through Fairfield’s analog tape-based manipulations. Trottier takes on most of the guitar duties, with Timbre Timber's Taylor Kirk contributing on a couple of tunes as well. Tight bursts of trap set rhythms played by Fairfield, and usually captured with just a couple of microphones, along with consistently excellent basslines laid down by both Simon and Olivier, propel the album and make this anything but an ambient listen. Strings appear on several pieces, courtesy Mika Posen (also of Timber Timbre), in a wide range of textures and treatments. With its combination of assured lyricism, cinematic guitars, dusky analog atmospherics and taut percussion, this is a vivid, concise and expressive instrumental album that sits snugly between fellow label acts Do Make Say Think and Exhaust on the one hand, Hrsta, Tindersticks and Evangelista on the other. Fans of early Trans Am, early/mid Tortoise, Calexico and (obviously) Timbre Timber should appreciate this as a very satisfying grower of an album as well. Thanks for listening.

BING & RUTH Tomorrow Was the Golden Age Tomorrow Was the Golden Age is an album length composition by minimalist ensemble Bing & Ruth. Written and conducted by pianist David Moore, Tomorrow Was the Golden Age is a halcyonic journey to a neverending place, where music waxes, wanes and drifts imperceptibly from silence to grand, glowing sound. Formed in the mid-aughts among music student friends at New York City’s New School, Bing & Ruth’s lineup has shifted with the scope of each recording. For Tomorrow Was the Golden Age, the group whittled down from the eleven players on their first album, City Lake, to seven: two upright bassists, two clarinetists, a cellist and a tape delay tech, all supporting David Moore’s sublime yet resonant piano scores. Moore is responsible for the compelling melodies mediating the overarching ambience of Tomorrow Was the Golden Age. Outside of Bing & Ruth, Moore is also a multi-faceted composer, scoring under his own name and for old-time fiddle groups, which he describes as “drone-based with a lessened concern for perfect intonation.” These ventures illustrate Moore’s unpretentious devotion to various musical traditions, yet Bing & Ruth remains Moore’s principal project, where form ventures even further beyond recognition. With untethered textures inspired by the indeterminate music of Morton Feldman and later torch bearer Gavin Bryars, Tomorrow Was the Golden Age achieves canon-level quality for instrumental music. Within the piece’s extended passages, Bing & Ruth wander through gradient fields of color, illuminated by a delicate architecture of slowly developing microtonal harmonies, Steve Reich-ian piano lines and the same analog tape delay that launched both Brian Eno’s Apollo and the greatest dub reggae engineers into the unknown. Moore employed fundamental contrasts as the conceptual mode for Tomorrow Was the Golden Age. “I wanted to take something from the darkness to the light and observe what that process would result in,” states Moore. Daybreak offered one contrast, with its untraceable hues from dawn to sunrise. Silence and its intrinsic gift of listening offered another. The emergence of Tomorrow Was the Golden Age from the two is Bing & Ruth’s epic and ultimate reprisal. The players on Tomorrow Was the Golden Age are David Moore on piano, Jeremy Viner on clarinet, Patrick Breiner on clarinet, Mike Effenberger operating tape delay, Leigh Stuart on cello, and Jeff Ratner and Greg Chudzik on bass, respectively. The album was recorded in Yonkers, New York and mixed in Brooklyn, with Brian Bender and Moore at the controls. Intended to be experienced at both high and low volumes, Tomorrow Was the Golden Age is perfectly calibrated for meditative backdrops, burrowed headphone listening and utter captivation when performed live. Its sonorous palette inspires emotional response across a dynamic field, welcoming a journey to and beyond tomorrow’s promise. LCD Soundsystem This Is Happening 1. Dance Yrself Clean 2. Drunk Girls 3. One Touch 4. All I Want 5. I Can Change

Tracklist:

6. You Wanted A Hit 7. Pow Pow 8. Somebody’s Calling Me 9. Home

Back in print, the classic third LCD Soundsystem LP. Of the many arresting moments that fill LCD Soundsystem’s This Is Happening, perhaps the most unexpected comes less than halfway through album opener “Dance Yrself Clean.” The seemingly unassuming, low-key rumble of a song morphs from its mumbled beginnings into an outsized flash of synth ballast and wailing vocals. The sudden shift is like the flicking on of a light, the perfect example of frontman-songwritermastermind James Murphy’s effortless balance of restraint and release, organic rock and electro pop, and muted cool and vibrant emotion. This study in contrasts pervades LCD Soundsystem’s third, and possibly final, release--an album where Murphy refracts images of heartbreak and longing through the scattered light of a disco ball. The cautious observations and honest reveals that follow are literally and figuratively quieter moments than that initial blare. On “All I Want,” against a wall of whirling guitar, Murphy recognizes a relationship that can’t be saved, and instead asks for “your pity” and “your bitter tears.” “Home” shuffles over pulsing keys and bubbling percussion as Murphy tries to bridge physical and emotional distance, singing, “You might forget, forget the sound of a voice / Still, you shouldn’t forget the things we laughed about.” Conversely, the sparsely decorated, sauntering “Somebody’s Calling Me” is almost hopeful in comparison: “Somebody’s calling me” Murphy half whispers, “to be my girl.”

LIMITED EDITION COLORED VINYL AVAILABLE WHILE SUPPLIES LAST: BLOOD RED w/ BLACK OIL SPLATTER (EDITION OF 491) Originally conceived as a frenetic side-project founded by members of Thursday, Glassjaw and Converge, United Nations’ membership and ideology have evolved into a full-time flagship for incendiary chaos. Their line-up overhauled to include members of acclaimed screamo group Pianos Become The Teeth, United Nations have become a perpetual lightning rod for controversy, confusion, and contempt – in other words, they have become one of the most promising punk bands in North America. Now, the enigmatic supergroup have returned with the long-awaited follow-up to their self-titled 2008 debut – and their first new recordings since 2010’s highly sought-after “Never Mind The Bombings, Here’s Your Six Figures” 7” on Deathwish Inc. Featuring material recorded between the spring of 1981 and the fall of 2016, The Next Four Years picks up where “Never Mind The Bombings” left off, expanding on their already caustic sound with an even greater sense of urgency and aggression. It’s a furious homage to the pioneers of punk, and a scorching critique on the current state of “punk.” It is the most cathartic music of their mysterious career, and unquestionably some of the most vital heavy music released this year. “United Nations is undoubtedly one of the most punk bands on the planet.” – New Noise “Flesh and bone shouldn't be capable of capturing this kind of inhuman ferocity with such clarity and technical precision.” – Pitchfork 8.1 “This album is violent, dark, full of anger and explosiveness – and one you shouldn't miss out on.” – Punknews

As a robust rock underground got swallowed alive by the Major Label Industrial Complex, the very autonomous Unwound—Olympia, Washington’s Great Noise Hope— toed the troublesome line between pay check and Check Engine light. Captured in the gaps of a ruthless touring schedule, defining fourth and fifth albums The Future of What and Repetition were issued in the back-to-back springs of 1995 and ‘96. Both find the band severing their post-hardcore roots, for gripping detours into Echoplex, kraut, D&B, and Mingus, as guided by a sun-worn copy of Book Your Own Fuckin’ Life. No Energy collects both of these 1990s masterworks, beginning with Justin Trosper’s home-made haircut stabs on “New Energy,” continuing with Vern Rumsey’s reanimating bass on “Corpse Pose,” and closing in a wall of Sara Lund crash cymbals on “For Your Entertainment.” This 33-song collection is buttressed by singles and period live tracks, a pile of double-exposed photographs, and a 10,000 word essay by latter-day Unwound diarist David Wilcox.

Sacred Bones has long been closely linked with tight-knit regional punk scenes, with roster artists representing everything from the icy precision of Copenhagen (Vår, Lust for Youth) to the acid-fried psych vibes of Tempe, Arizona, (Destruction Unit) to the grimy lawlessness of New York City (The Men, Pop. 1280, Anasazi). Institute stands at the center of another thriving scene in Austin, Texas, and we’re proud to be releasing their Salt EP. Formed in Austin in March 2013, Institute includes members of Wiccans, Glue, Blotter, Recide and more. Before they were even a proper band, singer Moses Brown had a couple of raw post-punk songs sitting on a four-track at his house. Once the lineup solidified, the band touched up one of those songs (“Dead Sea”) for a demo, then quickly wrote enough material to flesh out that demo (re-released on Deranged), a seven-inch (on Katorga Works), and now their debut EP for Sacred Bones.

We fell in love with this band as soon as we heard those early demos, and then saw a blistering set from them in their hometown earlier this year. The Salt EP is as sharp as the band’s earlier work but suggests longer, more experimental forms (“An Absence”) and a more incisive lyrical perspective, dealing with topics from existentialism to Brown’s experience as a closeted youth. Institute have already toured with their new labelmates in Destruction Unit, and we’re stoked to officially welcome these young men into our family.

DASHER SOVIET b/w TEETH Music blogs are always desperate for an angle when it comes to covering a new artist. Is there a compelling backstory to the recording? Does the artist have an outlandish manifesto? What idiosyncrasies can we fixate on in lieu of talking about the actual music? Taken from this perspective, Atlanta trio Dasher’s origins and mission statement are relatively simple—Kylee Kimbrough wrote a handful of songs on bass, switched over to drums and vocals, enlisted friends Ian Deaton and Jon Allinson to round out the lineup, and documented the humble beginnings with a debut cassette, Yeah I Know. While that premise is simple enough, describing Dasher’s sound is a more complicated affair. Kimbrough cites Patti Smith as a major inspiration. Spin Magazine heard elements of Killing Joke and Wire. Band interviews mention the importance of local hardcore bands Manic and Ralph. Somehow all of these reference points work, yet none of them quite do the band justice. Granted, Kimbrough’s commanding vocal delivery would make Patti proud. The primitive urgency of punk pioneers certainly pulses throughout Dasher’s catalog. And the deliberate squall of basement hardcore permeates throughout their latest offering, a two-song 7” courtesy of Suicide Squeeze Records. Recorded by Jason Kingsland, “Soviet” b/w “Teeth” captures the no-frills energy of Atlanta’s most propulsive post-punk band without tagging on any of the unnecessary conceptual or historical talking points lazy music writers rely on. The 7” is available worldwide on a limited run of 750 copies (250 on fluorescent lemon lime colored vinyl, 500 on black) and includes a download coupon. The two songs are also available digitally.

Hailing from Vancouver (now residing in Los Angeles, CA), Walter TV was originally composed of Joseph McMurray, Pierce McGarvy and Simon Ankenman. In 2011, after a recording session with Karl Blau in Anacortes, WA, the trio dispersed. McMurray and McGarvy moved to Montreal, while Ankenman went his separate way to pursue an “outdoors-inspired” lifestyle. In Montreal, McGarvy and McCurray moved into an apartment with Mac DeMarco and a rotating cast of friends. It was there, in their small apartment, that they recorded their cult breakthrough album, Appetite. Upon his signing to Captured Tracks, DeMarco recruited McGarvy and McMurrary for his touring band and Walter TV was put on hold. However, despite their shift in priorities, the duo continued to develop the music of Walter TV in any spare time they had. The creative process of Walter TV is free-form and organic, with each member’s input equally valuable as the others. The result of this artistic autonomy is a unique sound built upon frenetic percussion, warbling vocals, abstract guitar, and a resonant bass line. Fully remastered and featuring new tracks, Sinderlyn is happy to re-introduce Walter TV to the world.
