The elastic pop songs of Here We Go Magic are like a musical approximate to the kinetic, carefully balanced mobiles of sculptor Alexander Calder. There is an immediate weightlessness and elegance to the movement of the pieces that belie the delicate, toiling construction at play, the everything in it's right place of the design, the undeniable dedication to craft, the elbow grease, just how fussed over these pieces most certainly are. And more simply, like Calder's mobiles, the songs seem to float just above us, in a space that feels just out of our terrestrial reach. And though HWGM's new album Be Small finds the band taking a, well, smaller approach to production and finding more intimate soundscapes — from the live, expansive sound of 2012's A Different Ship, produced by Radiohead's 6th man Nigel Godrich, to Be Small's direct-to-board homerecorded album — it hosts no less acrobatics of musicianship and a singular sonic ambition. Inspired by the massively under-appreciated Eno/Cale tune "Spinning Away" from their collaborative album Wrong Way Up (1990) and by Robert Wyatt's classic "Heaps of Sheeps" from Shleep (1997), HWGM's chief songwriter Luke Temple set out to create a collection of "overtly major and optimistic" songs without coming across as cloying. The robust 90s future pop sound of these odd fellow heavyweights fits Temple like a sequin glove. You can hear how these songs likely began as Temple's bedroom folk riffs, but where they ultimately end up — here with the help of longtime HWGM collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Michael Bloch, as well as Austin Vaughn on drums — is near-transcendent and celestial. The pulsating album standout "Falling" builds upon arpeggiated, satellite signal synths and joyous, interlocked acoustic strums and fuzzed guitar. It gathers momentum with each phrase about falling in love (though it's unclear if this is a thing to be celebrated or dreaded) until the whole affair suddenly halts into a nothingness that sounds like a Gregorian chant from the bottom of a wishing well. When this narrator fell in love, just where did they fall to so suddenly? "Falling" is followed by the even strummier, even fuzzier "Candy Apple," a cheeky ode to New York City, the place HWGM has called home since its genesis. Over the last 6 years HWGM has become a real "poet's poet" among NYC musicians and bands. And it's clear why. You're almost always left dumbfounded as to how their songs developed from Point A to Point B, where all is a swirl of sound and emotion and groove, jaw-on-the-floor stuff. In these times, where easy answers are a click away, we need this sort of thing more than we know, to be made, again, into babies amazed at the wondrous mobile spinning above us.

Gracing the cover of Brooklyn band Small Black’s new record, a mysterious woman walks alone on the dunes at dusk, amid pockmarked sand. She's the subject of a found photo, one of many rescued with the warmth of a blow dryer and a fireplace, by singer Josh Hayden Kolenik after Hurricane Sandy flooded his family’s Long Island home. The faded image offers clues and invites viewers to construct their own narrative, one that escapes even the picture’s taker, Kolenik’s father. To put it simply, Best Blues is an album about loss, the specific loss of precious people in our lives, but also the loss of memories and the difficult fight to preserve them. “I spent months trying to scan all these images & letters, most covered with ocean dirt, and in doing so discovered what people often find in their family’s past: that they are a hell of a lot like those who’d come before,” says Kolenik. The chorus of standout “Boys Life” echoes this sentiment with the refrain “pictures of youth/picturing you,” over a track that itself was an old demo re-discovered by accident by the band, during a late night jam session at a cabin in Upstate NY. The compassion of the record collects itself in the soft repeating mantra-esque hook in "No One Wants It To Happen To You". The group’s third full length release, written & recorded at their Brooklyn home studio, nicknamed 222, showcases a band still evolving, and embracing the unpredictable. Kolenik (keys, vocals), Ryan Heyner (guitar, keys, vocals), Juan Pieczanski (bass, guitar) and Jeff Curtin (drums) have been recording, writing, and often living together, throughout the life of the band, establishing a closeness that has allowed them to achieve easy creativity and unspoken chemistry. After a year of recording, that band enlisted mixer Nicholas Vernhes (War on Drugs, Deerhunter) of Rare Book Room Studio to help complete the record. Best Blues finds the band in their sweet spot: the smoky intersection of considered & vulnerable songwriting and loose, almost nonchalant ambience. The addition of piano flourishes, trumpet (Darby Cicci of The Antlers), hidden acoustic guitars and Kaede Ford’s ethereal vocals provide new dimensions to the band’s already expansive sonic palette. Cut-to-the-chase rippers “Back at Belle’s” & “Checkpoints” embody & build on the group’s signature gritty yet focused electronic sound. While the more pastoral tracks, such as “Between Leos,” & “XX Century,” skeletally based on recorded improvisations, find the band painting a more nuanced, assured aural portrait. The repeating of the line “twentieth century” on closer, “XX Century”, serves as a coda for the album, offering a simple summation of what Best Blues’ intent has been from the opening Casio stab: an attempt to reexamine the past, but also one to let it go.

Incarcerated funk has no right to feel this free. Musical convicts and actual convicts from across the Commonwealth, The Edge Of Daybreak’s membership wrote and recorded Eyes Of Love while serving out sentences of six to sixty years. Set to tape inside Powhatan Correctional Center on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia, these intimate 1979 sessions unlock the prison gates and peer into a collective consciousness concocted by a core of four confined artists. Assembled from distant love ballads and fanciful odes to freedom, Eyes Of Love is a prison letter composed by committee, recorded hastily, and circulated regionally amongst adventurous clientele willing to take a chance on these felonious talents.

Jersey-bred songwriter Alex Bleeker first started making solo music under the guise of Alex Bleeker & the Freaks, gathering together his friends and like-minded players to fill out his sometimes dreamy, sometimes heavy-hearted tunes. While splitting his time between writing solo songs and his duties as bass player in breezy indie band Real Estate, Bleeker eventually crafted two separate albums of material with his able-minded Freaks, a low-key self-titled release in 2009 and a more full-bodied 2013 record entitled "How Far Away". The second album found Bleeker's deceptively passionate songwriting at the core of what came on as a rather unassuming collection of country-tinged rockers, with wispy vocal harmonies and burning organ leads wrapping around simple but unrelenting melodies. Informed by a deeply-studied fixation with audience-recorded tape trades, parking lot culture and the entire cannon of roots rock history, Alex Bleeker & the Freaks serves as both a continuation and an update to the road-ragged, hard working American party band.

ESMERINE Lost Voices C D / 18 0 g L P / D L
RELEASE DATE: 16 OCTOBER 2015 Instrumental chamber rock ensemble feat. Bruce Cawdron (Godspeed You! Black Emperor), Rebecca Foon (Silver Mt. Zion) and Jamie Thompson (Unicorns, Islands) Follow-up to their 2014 Juno award-winning album Dalmak (Instrumental Record Of The Year) Montréal chamber rock ensemble Esmerine return with Lost Voices, the most dynamic and incendiary record of the group’s career, following its acclaimed and Juno awardwinning 2013 release Dalmak. Led by co-founders Bruce Cawdron (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) on mallet instruments and Rebecca Foon (Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Saltland) on cello, Esmerine also includes drummer Jamie Thompson (The Unicorns, Islands, Little Scream) and multi-instrumentalist Brian Sanderson.
C S T 116
Lost Voices is the result of multiple recording sessions led by Vid Cousins (Kid Koala, Amon Tobin, Colin Stetson) and was mixed/produced by Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes) at his Breakglass Studio in Montréal. The album features several tracks that are hands down among the band’s most rocking, making newfound use of electric guitars (courtesy a variety of guest players) alongside the group’s nucleus of marimba, strings and percussion. Esmerine also welcomes bassist Jeremi Roy (who began touring with the group in 2013) as an official member; his contrabass work adds potent low-end to the heavier jams on the new album. Lost Voices is equally notable for the appearance of Godspeed/Mt. Zion violinist Sophie Trudeau as a featured guest; her intense, incomparable string sounds/styles elevate the potency of the record’s most soaring and high-octane pieces, particularly on opener “The Neighbourhoods Rise”, “19/14” and “Hakanting”. Thompson’s drumming comes to the fore on these pieces too, and on the rock-steady minimalism of “A River Runs Through This City”, which harkens back to the likes of Tied & Tickled Trio, June Of 44, Shipping News and Lungfish.
TRACKLIST:
Lost Voices can fairly be called Esmerine’s ‘rock’ album, expanding upon the band’s celebrated prowess at deploying structure and dynamic, balancing melodic expression against methodical restraint through a diversity of stylistic touchstones (Minimalism, post-rock, math-rock, desert rock) while allowing for explosive crescendos of exuberant density and maximalism that most notably distinguish this record from previous work. The album nonetheless includes several instances of more spacious, searching and/or tender compositions – not only in some of the opening sections of the rock songs, but in stand-alone marimba-and-string-led pieces like “Pas Trop Pas Tropes” and “My Mamma Pinned A Rose On Me” and in the two piano-and-string minuets that close each side of the record. Lost Voices is a deeply satisfying and evocative journey and another brilliant iteration of Esmerine’s distinctive instrumental chamber rock: cerebral and visceral, controlled and volatile – and wholly cinematic in scope throughout. Thanks for listening.

ABOUT THIS RECORD Brothers Jared and Michael Bell have been making music together as Lymbyc Systym since 2004. Though Jared resides in Brooklyn and Michael in Phoenix, their years of shared experience and deep connection through music have helped them develop a remarkably refined and fluid cross-country writing process. “Growing up together our musical minds converged to function as one unit, which is great up to a point – but it can also be a recipe for compositional stagnancy,” says Jared. “With two-thousand miles between us, we’re continuously experiencing things in different ways at the same time – the weather, the pace of our cities, our interior surroundings. We embrace this divergence. It keeps us sane, and the ideas fresh.”
TRACK LIST
Despite the physical distance, their brotherly connection sounds more tenacious than ever on their new album Split Stones. Throughout the album, the duo explore the power of disparate halves coming together to form a unique whole. The idea serves as an analogy for Jared and Mike's relationship, Lymbyc's sound, and the mind/body dichotomy. Their interest in the notion of fragmented halves working together dates back to an early '80s body relaxation cassette their mom used to play in the car when they were kids. They stumbled upon the tape in a junk drawer during one of the recording sessions for Split Stones and ended up sampling it for the album's title track. All of the songs on Split Stones were created using arpeggiators but with a distinctly Lymbyc twist. Throughout the album the arpeggiators act as living machines – scientific clarity in harmony with human uncertainty. As Jared explains, “Instead of synching up the arpeggiators, they were recorded freely with countless variations, then edited together manually. It made for an incredibly dynamic and organic rhythm that set the compositional tone for the rest of the record.” The resulting collection of songs is the duo's most up-tempo, vibrant, and danceable album to date.

PRESS QUOTES “...a dizzying instrumental melting pot of glowing harmonies and finger-snapping rhythms.” UNDER THE RADAR
Recorded largely in their respective home studios, the duo went to Dallas to track live drums at Elmwood Recording, where they mixed their previous albums Shutter Release and Field Studies with John Congleton. The album opens with "Generated Bodies", a song that starts as a colossal instrumental rock track, but quickly evolves into spirals of chordal synths and electronic beats, mirroring the band's metamorphosis over the past decade. Other songs like “Split Stones" and "Pulses" find the band experimenting with longer cinematic song structures, leaving behind the short "pop" song structures they've delivered on previous albums. The album veers into full on dance mode on “Paraboloid" before things wind down with the sunny groove of album closer "Scientific Romance”.
"…complex sonic musings on what pop music can truly become." CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND “...a beautiful, trance-inducing whole. Put the album on repeat, and it's easy to completely lose track of time and place.” CHICAGO READER "...a percussive soundtrack to your coolest drug induced dreams." XLR8R

Aura Obelisk: seemingly clear case of the sophomore jinx. Had Octagrape planned this out better, they could have easily avoided it. Their semi-recent Major Mayor Maxion Marble EP was 32 minutes long and could have easily been album #2. Just four covers of Major Stars, Mayyors, Dymaxion, and Marble Sheep tunes, the MMMM ep was generally well received, and in no small part because, let's face it...they didn't have to write a single song. But sadly they slipped and billed it as an EP. Meaning the proper follow-up to 2013's Red UFO LP is now 2015's floating and bloated Aura Obelisk. So your second album is a double LP? Four gaping sides, eighteen of your own new songs and a cover purportedly way up the list of Bands You Should Never Cover: Swell Maps "Vertical Slum"? Decisions, boys. Apparently late-2014/early-2015 was supposed to be the hunker-down phase for the band following the near endless barrage of early years touring. Otis "O" Bartholomew (original bass player) bid them amicable adios last year mid-April after they showed very few real signs of getting their act together. Ely Moyal (drummer on this album as well as all other Octagrape releases to date, and Glen's fellow early-90s Trumans Water alum) is now said to be leaving as well, kindly questioning the wisdom of an entire East/North East summer tour that originally formed itself around an opening slot for Complete (in Brooklyn this August). Jinx smeared all over the surviving sophomores. So who remains in grape-land, and what does Aura Obelisk have going for it? Glen Galloway and Jason Begin (songwriting/mixing/mangling brain-trust) are still mangling in full effect here, once again joined by the beautifully-skinned Alexander Dausch (who also pummeled the low end for all of Major Mayor EP). Although an infinitely famous new drummer is no doubt soon to be announced, Ely definitely bowed out strong with Aura. Production-wise, this record was split evenly between a quick trip up to Sacramento early 2015 (to funnel their nine most road-snug numbers through Chris Woodhouse's amplified ears)...and a more deliberate several months in San Diego borrowing Ben Moore (in between his recent stints of live Drive Like Jehu documentation). And, one shining atypical fragment of a closer with Rafter Roberts. The results are a blend of Octagrape's hottish live tune-deliverysyndrome and curbed bursts of studio as (wounded) instrument. Desperate stabs at blending the songwriting un-writing lessons they appeared to learn on the covers EP with a forced step into no/new/neuwave embarrassments. Jinxed sophomores managing to prune themselves into a number of unexpected shapes only to crush bits of woolly nectar out of each. And all of it delivered with the utmost urgent confidence that the rest of the listening universe needs to hear this as badly as they need to unburden themselves of it...? We'll see. If they still remain in one piece after Complete gets through with them, they can crank all of our lucky stars.

________________________________________________ PRESS “… it’s light-years more thrilling to actually hear those dots connected, especially by a band who happens to also share a taste for the interstellar. In covering all four bands for this EP, Octagrape puts their stamp on this mind-sharing music and shows how that music has put a stamp on them. Which is to say that sometimes Major Mayor Maxion Marble sounds like all five bands at once – especially in the most epiphanyhugging moments of the opener, a string-slobbering take on Major Stars’ ‘Syntoptikon’ that sounds like the history of right-on rock condensed into a dying sun.” – Marc Masters, The Out Door, on Major Mayor Maxion Marble “I think [Octagrape] are likely the best live band gigging regularly in the San Diego area…” – Little More Than A Big Crashing Beat “My son & I are both big fans, he's three and requests your record by name!” – John Darnielle, The Mountain Goats “The highlight on the EP, “Soviets” opens with a menacing riff, taken directly out of a mash-up of Pussy Galore/Howling Hex/Red Krayola sensibilities, yet altogether more coherent.” – Baba Upanishama, Bad Sounds Magazine “Octagrape [is] a breath of fresh air in dusty garage.” – San Diego Reader “I had never seen them before, and I feel as though they turned me into an instant fan. Their high-energy brand of steady noise-rock was punctuated with their amazing guitar work.” – The Vinyl District
