Lily & Madeleine Fumes CATALOG / AKR128 RELEASE DATE / October 28th, 2014 GENRE / Singer-songwriter DESCRIPTION / From the beginning, the Lily & Madeleine’s calling card has been the breathtaking and intuitive union of their voices. When the two come together in ecstatic and seamless “blood harmony,” it’s a sound that continues to haunt long after the songs are sung, leaving an electrical charge behind like a sparkling tracer in the air. When they step out individually as vocalists, Lily’s warm, smoky alto is the counterpoint to Madeleine’s crystalline, bell-like soprano.

Those who first fell in love with the disarming beauty of Lily & Madeleine’s voices on their debut EP “The Weight of the Globe” and their full-length follow-up “Lily & Madeleine” will find the same otherworldly harmonies on their new release “Fumes.” With ten dazzling tracks, this record finds the sisters once again teaming with esteemed producer and manager Paul Mahern and stellar songwriting collaborator Kenny Childers. As the sisters have grown as people and artists, so has their sound evolved. The scope is broadened here. The music is expansive, the instrumentation multi-layered. This is an entrancing production that allows both singers to stretch out in new directions. Like the sun slanting through a window in a Vermeer painting, it’s an experience that captures the subtleties of both shadow and light. The Twilight Sad
Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave Following their stark nod to the heroes of an industrial past, No One Can Ever Know, The Twilight Sad has dug into their own past to form an album that’s bracing, biting and as widescreen as anything in their canon. The band, ever ambassadors of Scottish gloom, have harnessed their dark muse once again and drawn on their prowess in the live arena to track a record that proves they can translate the power of their stage show to tape.

Where each album prior to No One Wants To Be Here and No One Wants to Leave saw the Twilight Sad tackling new sounds and ways of writing, their latest work draws from their entire career. MacFarlane says: “Over the 8 years we've been touring, our live sound has taken on different forms, from full on noise/feedback, to a sparse, synth led sound, to a stripped back set up with just keys, drum machine and guitar, to playing with an orchestra, and to just an acoustic with vocal. We wanted to try and capture all of those elements and develop them in some way to make the new record.” Opting to stay in Glasgow, the album was produced at Mogwai’s Castle Of Doom studio, engineered by the band’s live soundman Andrew Bush, mixed by Peter Katis (also responsible for Fourteen Autumns), with touring member Johnny Docherty playing bass. “We spent a lot of time at home when writing this new record, we got to hang out with old friends and get back to some sort of normality, which I think really helped me clear my mind and focus in on writing these new songs,” Graham says. “I had a lot I wanted to get off my chest and I've done that with this new record.” A first listen to the album confirms everything the band has said - noisy, densely layered, and deeply melodic, it wouldn’t be out of line to say this may be their best yet. One thing’s for sure - the Twilight Sad have still got a lot of life left in them.

BIO When MONO began in 1999, they set out with a simple mission: From bliss to bludgeon, no matter how long or winding the path may be. Their debut album, Under The Pipal Tree, outlined that mission in twisted, psychedelic fury. Subsequent albums would see the band honing their craft, mastering their mission, and ultimately abandoning that path in favor of more grandiose pursuits. Flanked by increasingly larger orchestras, MONO performed live at some of the most prestigious venues in New York City, London, Tokyo, and Australia. MONO had become an orchestral rock band, a spectacle of extreme melancholy and melodrama. By 2012's For My Parents, the band had finally reached the logical conclusion of that era; it was time to remember where they started, and to rethink where they were heading. Less strings? No strings? Louder? Quieter? Lighter? Darker? Yes. The Last Dawn and Rays of Darkness are a pair of new albums by MONO. Recorded simultaneously yet conceptually and creatively disparate, the two act as both opposing and complementary sides to a story. No strangers to narratives, the twin albums explore familiar themes for the band: Hope and hopelessness, love and loss, immense joy and unspeakable pain. Those elemental parts of life and the complicated relationships they create have never been more resonant through MONO's music than they are here. The Last Dawn is the first of these two companion albums, and is the "lighter" of the two, thematically and melodically. It contains undoubtedly some of MONO's strongest songs ever, drawing on an array of influences from minimalist film score to vintage shoegaze. It is MONO at their absolute purest, executing an uncanny, unspoken dialogue with each other without the dozens of stringed instruments that have been so prominent throughout their catalog in recent years. The songs are also noticeably more efficient – there hasn't been a MONO full-length record that fit on a single slab of vinyl since 2003's One Step More And You Die – and the album benefits immeasurably from this streamlined approach. MONO have always been masters of telling compelling stories without words. But now they've proven they can do it without frills, too.

Those elemental parts of life and the complicated relationships they create have never been more resonant through MONO's music than they are here. Rays of Darkness is the first MONO album in 15 years to feature no orchestral instruments whatsoever. That fact alone is remarkable given the band's reputation for sweeping, dramatic instrumentals that recall Oscar-worthy film scores. Instead, Rays of Darkness more closely resembles a jet engine taking off inside a small, crowded auditorium. It is MONO's blackest album ever, a collection of scorched riffs, doom rhythms, and an unexpected contribution from post-hardcore pioneer Tetsu Fukagawa of Envy. The album ends with the smoldering wreckage of distorted guitars and ominous drones playing out a eulogy to the days when MONO shot blinding rays of light through seemingly endless darkness.

MINUS THE BEAR PLANET OF ICE Following the success of Highly Refined Pirates’ forward-thinking guitar gymnastics and Menos El Oso’s groundbreaking glitch rock, Seattle’s premier pop revisionists Minus The Bear dug into some of rock music’s most ostentatious years for inspiration for their 2007 album, Planet of Ice. While their earlier material found the band absorbing and repurposing the virtuosic dexterity of math rock, the airtight sonic manipulations of turn-of-the-century IDM, the drum and bass groove of contemporary R&B, and the cerebral pop foundations of Television and The Police, the band prepped for their third full-length by immersing themselves in prog legends, jazz rock mavericks, and other audiophile heroes of the ‘70s. The title alone conjures images of Yes’s Relayer album art, and the influence of the elder statesmen’s symphonic scope can be felt throughout Planet of Ice’s lush and intricate arrangements. You can also hear the band channel the ominous instrumental interplay of Lamb-era Genesis on “Dr. L’Ling”, the deceptively savvy musicianship and pristine production of Steely Dan on

OUGHT
Once More With Feeling... 10” / DL RELEASE DATE: 28 OCTOBER 2014 "Endearing and electrifying... treats panic attacks and adrenalized ecstasy as two sides of the same pounding heart, with simultaneous transmissions of joy and fear, discipline and chaos, comedy and tragedy." – PITCHFORK (BEST NEW MUSIC for More Than Any Other Day) "Four young men on the verge of a complete breakdown and/or total transcendence; four decades of art-rock refracted into something weird, brilliant and new." – ROLLING STONE "Deeply refreshing, bursting at the seams with joy and anger and less indebted to its long list of influences than it is an entity greater than the sum of its parts.” – ALL MUSIC GUIDE Four-piece post-punk group Ought has been gathering momentum the old-fashioned way, with a humble and deceptively unassuming debut album that's been worming its way into many many ears thanks to its combination of intelligence, authenticity, directness, simplicity and energy; and with live performances in which the band's channeling of genuine passion, politics and charisma are consistently connecting with and exuberantly galvanizing audiences. Released in April 2014, More Than Any Other Day has been showered with accolades. Since then, the band’s mostly been on the road, racking up live shows and ramping up the attack on their existing songbook. Discussion of a tour-only release that would grab a couple of the band's self-recorded early tunes and commit them to vinyl shifted by the end of spring towards a realization that Ought wanted to update this material to reflect how the songs have evolved on stage and in concert. An intense weekend session at Montréal's Hotel2Tango in June 2014 yielded new recordings of two early pieces, "Pill" and "New Calm Pt. 2" (the self-recorded 2012 versions of which remain available on Ought's Bandcamp) along with the brand new, more experimental and largely instrumental "New Calm Pt. 3". The fantastic non-album track "Waiting" from the More Than Any Other Day sessions (and the first tune to be given out via Constellation when we announced the Ought signing) rounds out this 4-song, 24-minute, 10" vinyl-only offering, suitably titled Once More With Feeling… In light of this new/freshly recorded material, it seemed unfair to restrict the Once More With Feeling… EP to tour-only status; Constellation is also making it available to indie retail, with a proper release date and all. As with More Than Any Other Day, the 10" was recorded by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh at H2T, mastered by Harris Newman at Grey Market, and pressed at the inimitable Optimal record plant in Germany. We think it's a very fine set of tunes that brings fans up to date with Ought's first two years of songwriting and reveals additional facets of the band, including its ability to play with nostalgia and balladry ("Pill"), feverish revival-tent testifying ("New Calm Pt. 2"), and improv/abstraction ("New Calm Pt. 3"). Thanks for listening.

Slim Twig is the name of a man, not of a band - though he has performed in many a group, some under his own moniker. Boasting a catalogue several underthe radar releases deep, the Toronto native lays claim to a tremendously original work with his orchestrallyinflected, art rock album, A Hound At The Hem. Selfproduced in the fall, 2010, Hound is a suite of narrative songs thematically inspired by Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. DFA is privileged to reissue this album in advance of the release of Twig’s newest works. Upon completing AHATH in 2010, Twig struggled to find wide release for it due to its uncompromising textural onslaught and disregard for genre. This course of events set the stage for the composition and release of Sof’ Sike, a somewhat more conventional set of pop songs released on Paper Bag Records, in 2012. The title of that work refers to Twig’s own conception of Hound as the hard-psych flipside to his work of that period. Recorded on Toronto Island in collaboration with fellow Torontonian, Louis Percival, the album features string arrangements by Owen Pallett, and other collaborators including Meg Remy (U.S. Girls), Carl Didur (Zacht Automaat), and the St. Kitts Quartet. As a conceptalbum exploring the troubling and the taboo and themes like the transformative power of lust, AHATH can be interpreted as an echolike response to Serge Gainsbourg and JeanClaude Vannier’s Histoire De Melody Nelson. Most of all, AHATH poses the question; where next for Slim Twig, this promising and original auteur? “It’s this balance of accessibility and experimentation that makes Hound – and indeed Twig himself – such an intriguing prospect.” - The Quietus Exclusively distributed by SC DISTRIBUTION Phone: 812.335.1572 Fax: 888.678.0167 US Sales: Shelly Westerhausen shelly@scdistribution.com Kraegan Graves CAN Sales: kraegan@scdistribution.com

“I write about the things I know, but it should be interesting for other people. So I want it to be like a really great roman-a-clef, or reading your older sisters diary.” - Dan Bodan “Soft”, the new album from Dan Bodan, is a rose-scented journey through millennial love issues, Soundcloud collage, and post-empire paranoia. Co-produced with Physical Therapy and Ville Haimala (Renaissance Man) and featuring M.E.S.H., 18+, Great Skin, Latisha Faulkner, Dena Yago, and Stadium. Berlin based songwriter Dan Bodan was born in the wide open Canadian prairies and raised in Montreal. Reared on the city’s underground noise and experimental music scene, Bodan moved to Berlin 8 years ago. Blossoming in the city’s unique mixture of crumbling old-world european values, start-up philanthropy, sleepless techno and epic grey skies, he began writing songs to soundtrack his train rides through the city and make sense of it all. Working together with a team of world-class producers, poets and artists, he writes songs to fit comfortably in that space between the finger and the mousepad, the bedroom and the club, the earth and the ether. “He blows in like a sweet guardian angel over the beat, making a track so light it feels almost like daylight peeking into a dark nightclub.” - The Fader “The real star is his voice, which quivers as it rises and falls through each line, powerful but slightly fragile” - Resident Advisor Exclusively distributed by SC DISTRIBUTION Phone: 812.335.1572 Fax: 888.678.0167 US Sales: Shelly Westerhausen shelly@scdistribution.com Kraegan Graves CAN Sales: kraegan@scdistribution.com

“Intensity Ghost” Catalog #: NOQ041 Release Date: October 28th, 2014 CD | Boxlot: 30 LP | Boxlot - 24 Vinyl Non-Returnable
Tracklisting: 1. The Ballad of Freer Hollow 2. Yellow Stone 3. I Ain’t Waiting 4. Intensity Ghost 5. Paris Song
Intensity Ghost is the first studio release by Chris Forsyth with the Solar Motel Band (the new group formed in the wake of his critically acclaimed 2013 solo record Solar Motel) and it's a career-defining statement of purpose and a near virtual history tour of late 20th century electric guitar, touching on widescreen psychedelia, art rock, the late-70's New York scene, and the melting pot of early 90's underground bands, but writing a whole new chapter, unforeseen by most in 2014. Solar Motel was received as a singular work of guitarroristic finesse, turning up across many year ends lists (Uncut, New Yorker, etc) and provoking ecstatic comparisons to psychedelic visionaries and the countless champions of guitar-based music who tend to outlive the trends. Whereas Solar Motel was a Forsyth solo album recorded with an ad hoc studio band, upon its release Forsyth put together a group of players to tour the record – bassist Peter Kerlin, guitarist Paul Sukeena (Spacin’), and drummer Steven Urgo (ex-The War on Drugs) - who took his vision to another level. Forsyth brought this group, now called The Solar Motel Band, into the studio in late 2013 to make Intensity Ghost, largely forsaking the epic sprawl of Solar Motel in favor of a startlingly diverse and focused set of songs. The result is a 5-track masterwork and a rare combination of power and grace. Just as The Grateful Dead or Popul Vuh were able to embrace broad spectrums of sound and transform those influences, the Solar Motel Band distills Forsyth's message while avoiding any genre-exercises. Intensity Ghost is a giant sounding record, it's hall sized psychedelia filled with hooks and an immediacy rarely found in such sweeping, cinematic music. The influences are not hard to spot, but this is no retro reenactment trip. Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band synthesize rather than emulate what has come before, producing something all their own. Their music is expansive, yes, but also profoundly compelling and lyrical; no one is missing a singer in the Solar Motel Band. Forsyth's guitar makes sure of that.

FRIGHTENED RABBIT THE MIDNIGHT ORGAN FIGHT: VINYL EDITION Early in their career Frightened Rabbit tuned into their now familiar penchant for being able to nail a near perfect pop song. They proved it with their loose, charming debut, Sing The Greys, but as many fans would attest, they cemented their status with The Midnight Organ Fight. The band’s sophomore album still holds a dear place in many hearts and its raw honesty is apparent in every note and every breath on Midnight Organ Fight. The album, previously only available on import vinyl and in a Record Store Day expanded issue is now back in its original form and here to stay.

and mixed over the ensuing fortnight, Midnight Organ Fight was written with the intention of creating a more "pop" sounding album. Yet although musically more immediate, vitally, the band have not forsaken the personality or passion of any of their earlier recordings. Scott Hutchinson expands: "I feel the general FR weirdness is still apparent in the lyrics and this makes for an interesting sort of juxtaposition. It sounds kind of clean, but it's actually pretty fucking dirty once you get listening."

In 1971, Bulbous Creation poured what little personal surplus they had into a full day of recording at Cavern Studios, tracking enough material for a full length album. The band wouldn’t stay together long enough to save up for a custom pressing on Rock. Singer/guitarist Paul Parkinson was deeply individualistic, and left to perform his songs as he thought they should be, as a solo act. He preferred coffee shops to concert halls, and would stick to his craft another 20 years before hanging it up. Drummer Horstmann followed suit. Jim “Bugs” Wine and guitarist Alan Lewis soldiered on, shortening their name to the more sensible Creation and adding vocalist Wayne Austin, dynamic drummer Tommy Ward, and guitarist Roger Sewell. The Bulbous Creation LP was nearly doomed to oblivion, but for the efforts of Rich Haupt, who issued an unauthorized eight song LP in 1995 on his Rockadelic imprint. Lewis died in 1998 of esophageal cancer. When Paul Parkinson died of leukemia in 2001, a lone copy turned up amongst his possessions, with piece of mind that someone, somewhere, was listening.”

Patsy on Jesus. Elvis without the pelvis. Fern Jones’ only album, released by Dot Records in 1959, captured 36-year-old Sister Fern as she anointed church music with the same untamed energy that younger white Southerners were bringing to their rock ’n’ roll. Produced by Mac Wiseman and showcasing crack Nashville session players Hank “Sugarfoot” Garland, Floyd Cramer, Joe Zinkan, and Buddy Harman fresh off their June 1958 session with The Pelvis, Singing A Happy Song should’ve taken Jones from dusty canvas big tops to the Opry’s storied stage. But with no 45 to flog, Jones instead sold nary a record and never did hear herself on the radio. Her fiery rockabilly gospel was a few shades too radical for the conservative, traditional, near puritanical public she played to anyway. Fern Jones: The Glory Road collects her Singing A Happy Song LP and cuts including “Didn’t It Rain,” from her The Joneses Sing album, into one rousing package, rich with the details and imagery of a brief career spent tethered to the hard ground and gazing skyward. The Glory Road’ssound gnaws at the bit and stands in reverence, a runaway rockabilly tent show without a single drop of rain on the horizon.

MEDICINE HOME EVERYWHERE 1xLP/CD Another LP of new material by the recently reformed original lineup of Medicine so rather quickly, you may ask ? Yes indeed, pal. “Making records is where it’s at”, says Medicine, collectively. During this past year Brad Laner, Elizabeth Thompson and Jim Goodall eschewed the 90’s nostalgia touring circuit trod by their peers and instead dug deep to bring you “Home Everywhere”: A collection of new songs created with a gaze that is omni-directional. An answer to no other band, movement or genre (don’t be lazy, you). An ambitious work that could be no one else but said three lifer music weirdies in full inspiration mode. Last year’s LP “To The Happy Few”, their first in 18 years, impressed and perhaps surprised many with its vital creativity and fiery performances. But Medicine was really just getting re-acquainted in public.

An opening volley of several hook laden three minute noise-pop gems begins to mutate with the introduction of Brazilian inspired sounds and rhythms. While that may sound incongruous, it is still quite Medicinal through and through. And that’s just side one. Side two begins with something even more unlikely: A light sprinkling of lovely piano and an invitation to relax. Of course it’s only a temporary respite and within the same tune soon comes a beam of guitar as searing as any of the more extreme moments of the band’s discography. Then comes a rather Canlike tune featuring the recorded debut of drummer Jim Goodall’s trombone drone stylings before we reach the true heart of the platter: The LP’s namesake, “Home Everywhere”. An eleven and a half minute multi-part albumwithin-an-album which begins as a sprightly celebration of domestic bliss and ends with a comely invitation to leave the planet set to an extended cleansing cosmic fire of sonic madness. Because art (and lots of Finnish experimental music cassettes, truth be told).

LORD • Hometown: Seattle, WA • Debut • Touring now through 2015
Lord is the debut from Seattle-based punks FF, a trio comprised of Claire Nelson, Harley Thompson, and Michael Abeyta. For the entirety of their nascent existence they have existed on the fringes of the fertile enclave that is the Northwest DIY underground, materializing a singular vision of gloomy, ethereal punk anthems along the way. For sure, the touchstones are there – My Bloody Valentine, The Wipers, Sonic Youth, the Flying Nun Records cabal – but the collection of songs that compile Lord breakout from the suffocating box of 90’s revivalism, and offer a profound alternative to an overwhelming culture of nostalgia. MEGA BOG
GONE BANANA -LP / CD • Hometown: Seattle, WA • Debut • Touring now through 2015 A thick green mist, a lush chill vibe; after 5 years and countless self-released tapes and CDs, Mega Bog – the brainchild of songwriter Erin Birgy – has completed their best work to date; a swirling pop cloud called ‘Gone Banana’. Influenced equally by the emotional psychedelia of Kevin Ayers and the pop whimsy of Steely Dan, ‘Banana’ is a joyous declaration of artistic independence and purpose. The story of a chronic goofball insisting on being taken seriously. A celebration of melancholy; using music to force yourself off the floor when you hit the bottom. Birgy is an enigmatic musician and a true weirdo – Megabog changes lineups and configurations faster than most musicians change clothes.

Alternately a tender songwriting project, a blazin-hot jazz-rock combo, or an open forum for goofy one offs and fragile experimentation, it is ultimately whatever Birgy wants it to be on a given day. For ‘Banana’ she has gathered a loose group from Seattle’s thriving experimental pop and improvised music scene, including members of local mainstays like Neighbors and Iji, along with hotshot sax guy Jacob Zimmerman. Sounding equal parts Ariel Pink and Prefab Sprout, they rip through 9 hazy burners with a sneaky tightness hidden behind layers of drizzle and reverb. Birgy’s rich voice croons and bends around the shifting walls of sound, organizing and refocusing the swirl. Representing a unique moment in Birgy’s songwriting and a budding maturation for a bouncy community of oddball pop addicts, ‘Gone Banana’ is an immersive listening experience and a peek into the life of a truly strange soul. Gone Banana is out September 23, 2014 on Couple Skate.
RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 28TH, 2014 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE / INDIE “Backed by film noir brass…and gently reverbed minor chords, Birgy’s spectral vocals are at once comforting like a cashmere blanket and discombobulatingly strange. Not unlike catching the scent of someone that pulls you back to a dimension you forgot.” - Noisey “The record takes delightfully unexpected turns..., mixing together subdued vocals, fuzzy riffs, and deliberate bass lines with a saxophone that often slices through melodies with free-spirited and seductive cries.” - Wild Magazine

I LOVE YOU BUT I’VE CHOSEN DARKNESS DUST Faust Stay Awake Heat Hand Up Safely Come Undone Walk Out You Are Dead To Me 69th St. Bridge The Sun Burns Out WAYSD
I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness has reemerged from the shadows with their second fulllength album Dust. Produced by Paul Barker of Ministry, Dust picks up where 2006’s Fear Is On Our Side left off, with ten new tracks of dark, driving, propulsive rock. These taut songs have no need for unnecessary arrangements or artifice. Chosen Darkness' music is honest, and never stiff; affected, but not whining. Dust's minimalist artwork and specificity of tone demonstrate an elegance & wisdom, as these 10 songs evoke the foggy landscapes of Twin Peaks (the misty "Safety", fatalistic "You Are Dead To Me") as well as a burning storm. It is high time for I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness to come back into the light.

CHERRY GLAZERR Had Ten Dollaz b/w Nurse Ratched Any discussion of Cherry Glazerr is going to have a few obvious bullet points. First and foremost, the band is astonishingly young, with frontwoman/guitarist Clementine Creevy and drummer Hannah Uribe still not old enough to vote and bassist Sean Redman just barely above the drinking age. And then there’s the fact that the band’s debut cassette was released by California’s current kings of DIY power pop and garage rock, Burger Records. So even if you know nothing else about the LA trio, you know that they’re young and that they’re a part of the thriving underground community of stripped-down jubilant rock n’ roll. But if you’re envisioning a bunch of awkward, hyperactive kids bouncing around in their parent’s basement, consider the fact that the band has been championed and photographed by French fashion designer Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent Paris. Slimane even commissioned the band to score his fall/winter 2014 Paris show. The result was “Had Ten Dollaz”, a song that captures Cherry Glazerr’s knack for dualities: sultry and virulent, sophisticated and casual, laid back and bombastic, playful and deliberate. Suicide Squeeze Records is pairing up “Had Ten Dollaz” with the equally intoxicating b-side “Nurse Ratched” as a limited edition 7”. The record is limited to 750 copies (250 on fluorescent lemon lime vinyl, 500 on black) and includes a download code. The 7” is available worldwide and is also available digitally.
