D AV I D B A Z A N DARK SACRED NIGHTS “There is something that is underrepresented in Christmas music, and that’s just how uncomfortable the holidays can be for a lot of folks,” David Bazan says about his collection of holiday songs Dark Sacred Night. Back in 2002, David Dickenson of Suicide Squeeze Records approached Bazan and asked if he would be interested in doing a 7” of Christmas carols. The result was the “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day” b/w “Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel” single released under Bazan’s Pedro The Lion moniker. He followed it up with “The First Noel” 7” in 2003 and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” in 2005. Even after retiring the Pedro The Lion project, Bazan continued his run of Yuletide singles for Suicide Squeeze under his own name. These limited edition 7”s are all long out of print, but David Bazan and Suicide Squeeze have chosen ten of the fourteen tracks, remixed and remastered the material, and collected them on Dark Sacred Night. “It seemed like an interesting challenge. As a musician, my relationship with Christmas and its music is pretty strange,” Bazan says of the impetus behind the series. “It’s the normal band dude relationship with that stuff,” he says, addressing the general disdain fringe musicians feel for old cheery classics, “but then also throw in Christianity and all that shit… my discomfort seemed appropriate for the material. I’m bringing up a lot of hard things in terms of religion, family, commercialism gone mad.” And indeed, the festive aspect of the holidays is noticeably absent on Dark Sacred Night. Instead, Bazan focuses more on meditative classics (“Silent Night”, “Away In A Manger”), somber modern holiday songs (“Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”, “Long Way Around The Sea”), and, in the case of “Wish My Kids Were Here”, ruminative originals. But throughout the ten tracks, Bazan’s plaintive baritone voice and sparse instrumentation tie the multiple generations and songwriting approaches of these holiday songs into one cohesive melancholic sound. Dark Sacred Night may be a bitter cup to the masses that wish to bask in the unbridled optimism of Christmas, but it’s the perfect concoction for people who want to acknowledge the holidays without deluding themselves with jubilant traditionalism. “It’s not going to be for everybody, or hardly anybody,” Bazan says with a self-deprecating chuckle. “Hopefully there will be a growing collection of holiday music for depressive weirdos who want to sit and process their feelings about Christmas and reflect on the good and the bad and the past and all the stuff that’s mixed together in the crazy cocktail that is the holiday season.” Suicide Squeeze is proud to offer Dark Sacred Night on limited edition vinyl (2000 copies on blue-and-white-snow colored vinyl) and digital outlets. This marks the first time these songs will be available digitally. The vinyl editions also include download codes. Dark Sacred Night is available November 11, 2016.

ABOUT THE ALBUM Turns out the very sound of falling in love is just as abstract, subjective and loopy as the concept itself. Yoko Ono and John Lennon are two of history's greatest lovers, and Two Virgins is the document of the pair falling in love in real time. The album is a curious and amazing suite recorded over one weekend in Spring 1968 at Lennon's Kenwood home: Distant conversations; comedic role playing and footsteps; laughter, birdcalls and plunking piano lines; silly songs and space; tape delay stretching shrieks, bass rumbles and moans to the moon and back again. The now-iconic cover (featuring Ono and Lennon standing nude together) notwithstanding, nothing about Two Virgins is safe. It would be a risky move today for artists in the larger, popculture conversation just as it was a risky move in 1969. But this is an uncomfortably private, two-person dialogue about —and celebration of — experimentation, inspiration and play. And these two souls bravely let us look through the keyhole.

After the initial blast of punk rock bands made their impression on the youth of the late 1970s, subgenres quickly emerged. Some preferred the faster, louder aggression of hardcore, others the angular danceability of post-punk, some the raw and more personal home-made sound of DIY, and so on. Looking back among and between these genres we now recognize various blends of punk, post-punk, goth rock, industrial, and DIY as “deathrock.” In 2014, Sacred Bones Records launched the series Killed By Deathrock to document an entire scene of bands that haven’t yet received proper recognition. The thread that holds these groups together as deathrock bands comes down to their willingness and sometimes compulsion to reveal and explore the darker side of their psyches. Night-soaked dirges of fatality, despair, and horror were rampant, rooted in that sublimity that is found on the edge of the horror genre, as famously developed by Edgar Allan Poe — an edge that relished in misery and openly recognized the inevitable end of any human life. Killed by Deathrock Vol. 2 brings together essential underground bands from Denmark, the United Kingdom, Belgium, California, and Colorado. 1. The Breeze

Apocalypse Fetish is a 5 song extended play release from, me, Lou Barlow. The cover features a newborn child peering warily over the edge of her mother’s sling into 2016, the year that conspiracy theorists became experts and anger went [even more] mainstream. The song "Apocalypse Fetish" proposes that, perhaps, many of us have been disappointed that the end of the world has taken too long to come after we’ve spent most of our lives predicting it. And, perhaps, we’ve decided to take matters in our own hands and "bring it on" because, if it doesn’t come soon, then didn’t we all seem foolish talking about it all. the. time. There are 4 other songs on the EP, none of which are political in nature but are similarly "fired up". The melodic inspirations for the record came from my day in the back stairways and basement of the enormous Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Dinosaur Jr. were there opening for Primus in August 2015). I was alone and playing my ukulele in the cavernous spaces and tiled showers there. The unique reverberations brought the beginnings of these songs. The hall is reputed to be haunted and I’m not so sure it isn’t. I wasn’t able to fully draw the songs out until I recorded, once again, with Justin Pizzoferrato at Sonelab in Easthampton Massachusetts (May 2016). I recorded my last full length record (Brace The Wave) there in 2015. I’m happy to consider this EP a follow up to that album though, this time, every song is played on ukulele (strung with heavy strings and tuned much lower than a standard uke). RELEASE BIO After spending the past three years cutting acclaimed records for such esteemed imprints as Innervisions, Hotflush, and Acid Test, Recondite has rejoined the Ghostly International fold with an EP that builds on the robust field recordings and pale, moonlit melodies of the Berlin producer's breakthrough LP Hinterland. Named after the foreboding family of birds that includes ravens and crows, Corvus is a chilling listen bookended by two very different versions of a spellbound new track called "Capable." While the original version is aimed squarely at shadow-drenched dancefloors, Ricardo Donoso's remix mutes Recondite's skeletal drums and restless rhythms in favor of richly woven strings, ghostly ambient grooves, and frost-bitten samples. It's as if we're drifting without a dance loop to light the way—caught in the web of a complex sound bank that's cinematic yet strangely subdued. The middle section of Corvus is mesmerizing as well, as "Kauz" shuffles and shimmers in front of a star-splashed skyline, "Huibu" casts wooden sticks against poison-tipped synth parts, and the EP's title track melds the harsh cries of Bavarian birds with a tense beat. And while Recondite admits his new material is "a bit more serious" than his last couple 12-inches—it was loosely inspired by everything from The Revenant's Ryuichi Sakamoto soundtrack to Max Frisch's heady novel Homo Faber, after all—the Rottal-Inn native insists there's a light at the end of this particular tunnel. Or as he puts it, "Melancholic doesn't necessarily mean dark. Music can be happy and moody."

ABOUT THE ALBUM A Hand Through the Cellar Door is, in many ways, Temple’s most straightforward collection of song-storying tunes to date. There are tales of dysfunctional, broken homes and of dysfunctional, broken people. “Birds of Late December,” with its fluttering, nimble fingerpicking, paints an exacting but impressionistic portrait of divorce through the eyes of an exceptionally wistful child. Spiked Punch Guinea Pig Spiked Punch is a new project from 2/3 of Black Dice, Eric Copeland & Aaron Warren. After the third member Bjorn Copeland relocated to Los Angeles in 2015, Aaron & Eric worked on a Black Dice remix commission for Awesome Tapes From Africa, for artist Aby Ngana Diop. Through this creative process, they hit upon a new sort of inspiration for making music and Spiked Punch was born. These two tracks were born out of long form improvisations between Eric & Aaron. It is most definitely music born of their environment in Brooklyn - the lo-fi bodega beats seeping out of the dozens of delis, trial and error with early sample chopping, watching YouTube tutorials for help, the eerie comfort of late nite local tv, and a sweltering Brooklyn summer cooled and fueled by Tecate. The duo also emphasizes the music was recorded on an iBook from 2004. The music Spiked Punch have created is wildly percussive and zig zags around tweaked vocal stabs and dubbed out bass lines. When pressed for more personal descriptors for the music the band responded with this: “Coconut bongos, pineapple kick drums, stolen bike vocals, peanut chew bass-lines”. Make of those phrases what you will. Like this new music, as well as song titles like Vanilla Meatball, it makes no sense and and also perfect sense. Like Black Dice and the solo work from Eric Copeland this duality is one of the greatest gifts of Spiked Punch. Hoping there is more in store….
