BIO For a collection of music built around the poignant inevitability of decay, there has been a great many hopeful and inspired words devoted to William Basinski's The Disintegration Loops: stunning, ethereal, majestic, transfixing, life-affirming… and for good reason. From its 20-year gestation period to its infamously fateful completion, The Disintegration Loops is one of the most powerful manifestations of the inevitable cycle of life ever committed to tape, even as it documents the inevitable decay of all that is committed to tape. The very passage of time is its most effective instrument. To mark the 10-year anniversary of its original release – and its forthcoming induction into the 9/11 Memorial Museum this year – Temporary Residence Ltd. is honored to collaborate with William Basinski in presenting The Disintegration Loops in a fashion truly befitting a library of music with such a lasting legacy. This breathtaking limited-edition, numbered box set contains all four historic volumes, plus a pair of stunning live orchestral performances from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the 54th Venice Biennale, both previously unreleased. Remastered from the original recordings, this exquisite box set also includes the extremely rare 63-minute The Disintegration Loops film on DVD, and a 144-page full-color book featuring rare photos taken during the making of The Disintegration Loops, and liner notes by Basinski, Antony, David Tibet of Current 93, Ronen Givony of the Wordless Music Series, and Michael Shulan, Creative Director of the National September 11 Memorial Museum.

Penny Penny Shaka Bundu The remarkable story of South African singer and dancer Penny Penny is fit for Hollywood. Shibandza 05:29 then builds a career as a 03. Ndzihere Bhi 05:47 popular politician for 04. Dance Khomela 05:32 Nelson Mandela's African 05. Shaka Bundu 04:50 National Congress party. 06. Zirimini 05:05 Penny Penny's debut 07. Milandu Bhe 04:27 recording Shaka Bundu, 08. Shichangani (Remix) 05:12 recorded in 1994, is the album that launched a 34year-old Giyani Kulani CATALOG #: ATFA008 Kobane from the streets of Johannesburg to the national political spotlight. RELEASE DATE: November After a chance meeting with Tsonga disco producer Joe Shirimani, just six months after apartheid was lifted, Penny Penny's Shaka Bundu was released and entered the consciousness of the entire country. Penny Penny became an immediate sensation, against the expectations of everyone involved. The album went on to sell more than 250,000 copies in South Africa and Penny Penny has played to thousands on stadium stages from Liberia and Sierra Leone to Namibia and Mozambique. Using an Atari computer, Korg M1 synthesizer and reel-to-reel tape for vocals, Penny and Shirimani cut the entire record in just seven days. The music was something new for Tsonga disco. Pennyʼs sound was dominated by slow tempo house rhythms rising and falling against his anthemic vocal exultations and steel drum synth sounds. Variations on call-and-response singing with a female chorus had been a characteristic of Tsonga music for generations and Penny adopted and twisted that approach with his rap-like delivery. Pennyʼs husky, playful vocal performance is relatively light on lyrics and heavy on vibes. Shirimani constructed a signature sound for Penny was a static bass line, the sound of which contains the root tones of an organ but with a peculiar richness and depth. The producer won't reveal the secret of his trademark sound.

Amidst all the success of subsequent albums and tours, Penny's passion grew into working with the people back in his home province. Eventually, Penny got into politics. In 2011, he was elected ward councillor for his region under the African National Congress party banner.
Selling Points:
Today, nearly 20 years since Shaka Bundu could be heard blasting from speakers across a new South Africa, the music still sounds larger than life and worldly. And even today, despite shifting his energies from stadium shows to municipal matters, Penny Penny still sports his inimitable top-bun hairstyle.

6. Floe 7. Abscondence 8. Clouded 9. Fey 10. The Fade
RELEASE BIO For many great artists, going back is the way to move forward. With this in mind, Berlin-based producer Recondite looked to his homeland of Lower Bavaria for his debut Ghostly International release, Hinterland. "I tried to capture the area's mentality and natural environment within the album," he explains. "Particularly the moods that behold the emotions er a lot in this region." In fact, most of the of the four seasons, which di field recordings featured in this 10-track LP were taken in his recent visits to the free state in southeastern Germany. Recondite's production career has only spanned a handful of years, but his versatility with electronic music as an expressive medium puts him beyond others with discographies twice as long. He began Plangent Records in 2011 as a means for releasing his own music in limited batches. Lush, gorgeous, and vibrant are three words that can often describe his original productions, whether it's floating in a beatless ambience or driving a hard rhythm through the soundsystem of a nightclub or warehouse. His debut album came out in 2012 on the Los Angeles-based Acid Test imprint, and quickly put him up alongside ered a remix for the On Acid LP. The record labelmate Tin Man, who o also included one from Scuba, who'd mixed "Backbone" (Plangent #002) into his 2011 DJ-Kicks. Eventually, Hot Flush released a separate single erent for "The Hope" – Scuba's recent hit – exclusively featuring two di Recondite remixes. Hinterland is another step forward in Recondite's progression, maintaining a style all his own and acknowledging the finest moments in his previous releases. It's no small feat to incorporate one's observations of human nature against nature, and to lay it out in such a way that is cohesive, linear and sonically beautiful both up close and from a distance. "Characteristics of people's minds," he says. "Such as satisfied, frightened, calm, melancholic, sad, stoic, frustrated, strong, deep…they are captured in the sounds." While the record can be enjoyed in one long listen, there are going to be di erent tracks that speak to individual listeners. "Clouded" is one of the stronger arrangements, taking the sonic sweeps often heard from Marcel Dettmann or Function and filling the surrounding space with dreamy samples and warm bass. "Stems" is playful and fluid, and the record's opener, "Rise," is an eerie and melodic tinkering intro. As a whole, the release of Hinterland on Ghostly International is a perfect marriage – the label has always had an affinity for music with depth and frequencies that can magnetize a wide variety of listeners. "Basically, this is the album that had to come out of Recondite eventually," he adds, smiling. "It is Recondite." LP UPC

The hallmark of Jason Molina's career, Magnolia Electric Co., is both a confluence of all he would create and a line in the sand to mark a shift in his songwriting approach. It was the last statement under his iconic Songs: Ohia moniker, and the moment before he began making new legends as Magnolia Electric Co. for the next 10 years. Now— here at the end of that decade — with Molina gone, his work gathers more weight and meaning. This expanded 10-year anniversary edition of Magnolia Electric Co. features one never-before-released track plus many rarities. The full-band studio outtake of fan favorite "Whip Poor Will" is a sweet and spare version that ended up being played far differently on Magnolia Electric Co.'s final album Josephine (2009). Also included is the studio version of "The Big Game Is Every Night." Previously only available on the Japanese version of the album, this opus serves as Molina's thesis statement, its poetry weaving through the 20th Century, through art and sporting culture — ultimately questioning what it means to be an American in the autumn of the American Era. The edition also gathers Molina's gutting demos for the record, including those two outtakes. Nearly each begins with audible sound of the RECORD button being pressed down on the tape player. They are so close and intimate, it's hard to look them right in the eyes. But you should. With the wailing lap steel of the album opener "Farewell Transmission," Jason Molina & Company usher in a new day, playing the sort of rock that your cool uncle rolled to back in the '70s. Landing somewhere on the radar sonically between Bob Dylan's Desire and Bob Seger's Beautiful Loser, though thematically in-line with Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man," The Magnolia Electric Co lies at the crossroads of working class rock, white soul, swamp rock and outlaw country. While Songs: Ohia's last record Didn't It Rain was a meditation on roots and stability, Magnolia Electric Co. finds itself toiling with the wages of change, which is well illustrated in "I've Been Riding with the Ghost", a real rig rocker that could have easily fit on Time Fades Away, on which Molina sings: See I ain't getting better, I am only getting behind. Standing on the crossroad trying to make up my mind. Trying to remember how it got so late. Why every night pain comes from a different place. Now something's got to change. This thematic preoccupation with change also manifests itself in the rotating cast of lead vocalists. While the entire album boasts a doo wop-like line-up with five vocalists on the floor, six of the eight songs have Molina in the tall stool with the ever-enchanting Jennie Benford (of Jim & Jennie & the Pinetops, who was also a key player on Didn't It Rain) as primary back-up vocalist. But on two songs, new Songs: Ohia players step up to take on lead vocal duties, singing Molina-penned songs. Lawrence Peters takes the lead on "The Old Black Hen" with his fantastic Merle Haggard-esque country croon, while Miss Scout Niblett appears from the nether world of the Ohia wardrobe with feathers in her hair and casts her spell on the Ohia rig barreling through "Peoria Lunch Box Blues." Recorded live, in its entirety, at the hands of Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago, Illinois, with the same core back-up band that played on the Mi Sei Apparaso Come Un Fantasma Italian live album, this is the record where the Songs: Ohia fan demographics make a radical shift from the dominant bedroom universe of the world's lonely, sensitive, overqualified young white dudes, and finds refuge in the masses by being embraced by the world's truck drivers, sorority chicks, and hockey players, alike. Indeed, this is the first Songs: Ohia record with more than one song that could be played at a strip joint or monster truck show. Amid the mid-tempo slow jams, there lie some of the most upbeat material that Songs: Ohia has recorded to date.
SELLING POINTS 1. Expanded reissue of Songs: Ohia’s classic record gathering together one unreleased song, demos and full-band song only previously available in Japan. 2. First 3K copies include limited edition 10” of two rare full-band versions

2007: The cover art of the first record Sacred Bones ever released depicted an androgynous wild banshee wearing warpaint, clad all in leather and animal bones, holding a sacrificial knife pointed at the sky. This debut single was The Hunt’s lone statement. The songs were a visceral pulsation, etched in echo. The band appeared veiled in black scarves, painted faces bringing in devotees of the waves of old: post punk, darkwave, deathrock and the like. The sick fiends that followed, followed to the end; as bright as their flame shone, as dark was their demise. London, structure fires, and mental institutions all played a part in the downfall of the originators of 21st century redskin darkwave. 2009: After multiple tumultuous attempts at recording a full length The Hunt decamped to their collective hometown, Boston, to record the ultimate document of their time on earth. Buses begat buses, couches begat couches, and slowly the songs began to come together as they should have all these passing years. On the edge of perfection their time was cut short and this document sat for years, untouched by human hands. 2013: The Hunt lives on. In honor of both the first and one hundredth release, we will finally see and hear the toils of New York’s most enigmatic post punk band of recent. Ian Danger, percussive wunderkind; Mike O’Brien, whose four strings drew blood nightly; Christian Kount, master of negative space; and Jasper McGandy, the man who’s hopes for a darker future led them towards a reality we only now have the honor of witnessing. After all these years the time has come. The Hunt Begins.

Tracklisting: Grass Above My Head (6:29) Double Horse (16:46) The Houses of Parliament (23:25)
Cian Nugent’s first widely available album Doubles was released in the summer of 2011 to great acclaim from Pitchfork, NPR and The Wire, and rightly so. Nugent’s playing is a lorious thing – it twists and turns as if telling a story, with each chord change revealing something new. Over the past year, the young Dublin-based guitarist linked up with a 4-piece band called The Cosmos, a motley bunch interested in mining the same far out musical styles. Born With The Caul is their first studio album and the group is a force, existing some place out of time. Not only is their sound an era-less one but the songs themselves are never in a hurry as they build and unfold, never wasting a note. Tours of the United Kingdom and Europe have clearly tightened them up, though the looseness and fluidity of their playing is an envious thing. Born With The Caul captures an artist and a group at a peak moment. Selling points • Cian Nugent will appear at Hopscotch Festival in Durham, NC (with Low) followed by a tour of the east coast. • Cian Nugent and the Cosmos released a 7” through the Matador singles club earlier this year. • No relation to Ted. Yeasayer has seen the road more than the average band. In just three albums they have played well over 600 shows in 5 continents. They've played to 5, they've played to 35,000. Shows have been great, good, bad, and a few just terrible. Gear has been left on tarmacs, computers lost in taxis, fights, firings, bonds broken and made, and fans gained show by show. It's an arduous process being a modern band, but throughout it all Yeasayer has become one of the best touring acts out there.
Good Evening Washington DC, Live at 9:30 Club was recorded on the Fragrant World Tour during a sold out two-night stand on November 14th + 15th, 2012. A fitting location seeing as members of the band used to go to shows at the 9:30 Club when they were teenagers. Much like the band’s first live album, Live at Ancienne Belqique, this recording was created specifically with Yeasayer fans in mind. With that said, over the years it's become evident that the live show, for many, is the gateway to understanding the band, their music, and their varied albums. Sonically shifting record to record, Yeasayer are able to incorporate songs from all three albums into an incredibly cohesive live show. The songs aren't played verbatim. Rather, even for the avid Yeasayer fan, they are transformed in to something fresh and different. Though this is the first time the band is putting a live event into physical form, the hope is there will be more opportunities down the road as live recording gets more affordable.

David Lynch “Bad the John Boy” 12" track listing: 1 Bad the John Boy 2 The Big Dream (Venetian Snares Remix)
Key Information / Selling Points: Hometown / Key Markets: • New York, Los Angeles Press / Radio: • Over 30 print features ran on The Big Dream, including: Playboy, V Magazine, Flaunt Magazine (Guest Editor, Music Edition), Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Magazine, New Yorker, Filter, Paste (cover), New York Magazine, Magnet, LA Magazine, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Time • The Big Dream charted at #167 on Billboard Top 200, #1 Alternative New Artist • Both first singles premiered on KCRW, and Lynch appeared on Morning Become Eclectic
On the heels of David Lynch’s hugely successful sophomore full length, The Big Dream, comes a very limited edition 12", “Bad the John Boy.” While technically this track qualifies as a non-album or bonus track, Dean Hurley, Lynch’s producer had this to say about the song: “it wasn’t really recorded with the LP in mind, but it was done around the end of last year when the bulk of the album was being made. It was earmarked for something else entirely, but that thing didn’t happen in a way that required the song … so up until now, it was ‘a song with no home.’ ” Complimenting Lynch’s left-of-center A-side, the B-side proudly features a Venetian Snares remix of the album’s title track. Despite the fact that Canadian electronic musician Aaron Funk has been known for reinventing breakcore, with this remix he breathes a completely new approach into the song, turning it into something far from your typical dance remix. Hurley describes this track as, “music for the end crawl of a bootlegged sci-fi/horror film that you borrowed from your friend’s older brother and caused you to realize for the first time that you were actually scared in broad daylight.”

BIO The Books were one of modern music’s most vital players of this still-young millennium. Over the course of four albums in ten years’ time, they eschewed genres and pigeonholes so effortlessly and earnestly that they ultimately pioneered a new genre (or three) in the process. And for all the speechlessness their recordings inspired, their videos were every bit as beguiling: a surreal mix of bizarre found footage, home movies, and psychedelic animated imagery that fit their music so well that the two became virtually inseparable in their live performances.
Freedom From Expression collects every video ever made by the Books, compiled in chronological order. It’s enormously satisfying and fulfilling to map the progression from humble bedroom curiosities through to hilariously warped experimental art films masquerading as music videos. At over two hours in length across 21 videos, it is an invaluable piece of the Books’ universe, one that demands constant replays, and delivers as many emotional and cerebral twists and turns as anything else in their absurdly unique and forward-thinking catalog.
SALES POINTS Features every video ever made by THE BOOKS Includes longtime favorites “Cello Song Feat. Jose Gonzales” (from The Blind Side soundtrack), “Classy Penguin,” and “A Cold Freezin’ Night”

NAT BALDWIN DOME BRANCHES: THE MVP DEMOS
In 2008 double bassist/singer-songwriter Nat Baldwin released Most Valuable Player, an album that led Pitchfork to say "…he brings fierce performances to these polished compositions." Now 5 years later, Western Vinyl is proud to be releasing the original demos from Most Valuable Player, which were recorded in 2005 and 2006. The demo album, titled Dome Branches, features Nat's bandmate from Dirty Projectors, Dave Longstreth on guitar and electronics, Jim Reynolds on guitar, Nate Horton on drums, Tim Keiper on drums, Matt Bauder on Clarinets, Jess Pavone on viola. Throughout these demos, there's a remarkable raw energy stemming at least in part from the fact that Nat hadn't performed any of the material live yet, and Longstreth hadn't heard the songs before, so his guitar parts were made up on the spot. After studying avant-garde jazz and improvisation with jazz legend Anthony Braxton, Nat Baldwin started writing songs featuring double bass and vocals. In 2005 he joined Dirty Projectors. In addition to his work with Dirty Projectors, he has performed on Grizzly Bear's Sheilds, Vampire Weekend's Contra, and Department of Eagles' In Ear Park. In between touring and recording with Dirty Projectors, Nat made time to record his 2011 album People Changes, an album that led Pitchfork to say "…whether Baldwin is singing with his throat or his bow, there's a thrilling felling of freedom to it all." More recently, he's been writing, recording, and arranging songs for a new album to be released in 2014. You can hear some of the new material live this September when Nat tours in the US and Canada.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION + Nat’s previous releases had received praise from Pitchfork, Fader, Stereogum, A.V. Club, Drowned in Sound, Tiny Mix Tapes, All Music Guide, and more. + Nat is a member of the band Dirty Projectors, and the album guitar, electronics, and vocals by his bandmate Dave Longstreth.

BIO Since he began moonlighting from his main gig as one-half of sci-fi prog powerhouse Zombi, multi-instrumentalist A.E. Paterra has become increasingly renowned as the mastermind behind Majeure. Following the assured debut epic, Timespan, his second album, Solar Maximum, delivered on the promise of a retro-futurist ambient synth-rock masterpiece. Romance Language continues this journey with two sprawling, side-long tracks that marry the sci-fi disco of Timespan with the celestial Mars-scapes of Solar Maximum. It is both a nod to Majeure's prior accomplishments, and a peek into his sunspot-bright future – fitting for an artist whose entire career has been devoted to fluidly melding the past and the future to create a transcendent present. This vinyl-only release is strictly limited to 1,000 copies, and includes a free MP3 download coupon.

David Van Tieghem × Ten FRKWYS Vol. 10: David Van Tieghem × Ten — Fits & Starts For the tenth volume of FRKWYS, composer, percussionist and sound designer David Van Tieghem alongside ten younger artists from across the avant spectrum become a bulletin of Fits & Starts. In July of 2012, RVNG Intl. was invited to participate in Bulletin Boards, a group exhibition at Venus Over Manhattan curated by White Columns’ gallery director Matthew Higgs. An extension of an ongoing project which resides in the entrance of White Columns’ downtown New York gallery, Bulletin Boards featured 24 artists/entities, each given a new bulletin board as an inspirational starting point. In 1981, David Van Tieghem produced the experimental music video Ear To The Ground. The film features Van Tieghem “playing” downtown New York City, a world in which Van Tieghem established his rhythmic roots as a member of the Love Of Life Orchestra, a frequent collaborator with Laurie Anderson, and a player on Steve Reich’s Music For 18 Musicians, Robert Ashley’s Perfect Lives (Private Parts) / Perfect Lives and David Byrne and Brian Eno’s My Life in the Bush With Ghosts among other seminal recordings including his own. In Ear To The Ground, all city surfaces become communications—or bulletins—under Van Tieghem’s twiddling, thwacking and thumping thumbs. Partially inspired by this and by our blank but physically limited canvas space, Van Tieghem agreed to take part in a sequence of improvised performances and creative editing to become part of our FRKWYS series. We also invited ten younger musicians to post objects to the board. A cross section of present day New York artists were represented by way of Sam Hillmer as Diamond Terrifier (with the aid of Max Alper), Future Shuttle, Georgia, Roberto Carlos Lange as Helado Negro, Darren Ho, Eli Keszler, Hiro Kone and Megafortress, alongside the regionally sympathetic Blanche Blanche Blanche and Maxmillion Dunbar. In place of business cards, broadsheets, and flyers, the objects/communications contributed were broken toasters, firecrackers, 2x4s, thunder drums and customized electronics, each intended as a percussive device. On opening night, the bulletin board, disguised as assemblage, welcomed David’s dialogue. In the spirit of Ear To The Ground’s infinite conversation, Van Tieghem returned to Venus Over Manhattan to “play” the bulletin board without an audience. The process of Van Tieghem discovering and responding to the objects/bulletins again was multitracked in high definition. These recordings were then presented to the ten contributing musicians for further translation, “remix” and interpretation. For the final sequence, the unique pieces were delivered to Van Tieghem to edit and embellish as the sound collages presented as Fits & Starts across two album length sides of our tenth volume in the FRKWYS series. SAADA BONAIRE SAADA BONAIRE - LP/CD
• Hometown: Bremen: German • Recommended If You Like: Kraftwerk, Grace Jones, Marlene Dietric Saâda Bonaire. The fantastic disco/world music project from Bremen, Germany which never was meant to be. Formed by Bremen DJ Ralf Behrendt in 1982, Saâda Bonaire was a unique concept band centered around two sultry female vocalists (Stefanie Lange and Claudia Hossfeld) and dozens of local musicians culled from the local immigration center. Originally signed to EMI in 1982, their first and only single, “You Could Be More As You Are” was produced by legendary Matumbi, Slits and Pop Group producer Dennis Bovell in Kraftwerk’s studio in Cologne. Its fusion of husky female vocals, Eastern instruments, dub and African music aesthetics, drum computers and synthesizers remains unique to this day. EMI cancelled the project upon its release.

Saâda Bonaire compiles two songs from the original EMI single plus eleven previously unreleased songs recorded between 1982 and 1985. Also included are never before published photos and in depth interviews with band members and a full gate fold cover for those dedicated vinyl buyers. These lost recordings from the early eighties still sound fresh on today’s dance floor.

From the brief dialogue that precedes the pummeling beats of opener "Looking Glass" to the closing hiss and crackle of the title track, Initiation represents a coming of age for the band. For anyone who’s heard their 2012 self-titled debut album, Initiation is the culmination of the different themes explored there, honed, refined, pushed further and fashioned into its own unique world; a weird and alluring junction of ghostly atmospheres, punishing percussion, spectral vocals, phonography and sound design, all interwoven into a captivating atmosphere that is distinctively ERAAS' own.

With Initiation, the band seem to be looking for a sign of hope within the emptiness that surrounds them, trying to make amends with those in their lives, but not quite sure how to. A struggle we can all identify with. The songs on Initiation flow one after the other, creating an entirely immersive experience, playing out similar to a short film full of unexpected twists and turns. Listening to this record feels like a journey of sorts — faceless intruders, dreams of non-existent lovers, ghosts in the doorway, immortality, betrayal, and revenge –– trying to make sense of it all.

RELEASE BIO Post-punk leaning trio Soviet Soviet were born in 2008 on the Adriatic coaast of Pesaro, Italy by Alessandro Costantini (vocalist/guitarist), Andrea Giometti (lead vocalist/bassist) and Alessandro Ferri (drums). In 2009, they gained notoriety with a handful of self-released singles and incessant touring. The trio followed up with the Summer, Jesus EP in 2011, growing their reputation for immediate and tightly wound live performances. For the past year, the trio have converted that immediacy from the stage into a proper studio, honing and fine-tuning the production on their debut album, Fate. Felte will release the album November 11th worldwide. Fate continues the path of past releases, but with a tighter ferocity and sense of confidence in their unique sound within the post-punk genre. The guitar has more bite, the bass glows with a deeper tone and the drums are as steady and punchy as ever. Standout single "1990" is a great example of to-the-point, sharp guitar riffs and heavy, propelling bass. The rhythms immediately gets stuck in your head while Andrea's vocals oftentimes channel Gary Numan but sped up with an Italian, ice-like accent. "No Lesson" is driven by compact drums, never missing a beat while bass and guitar lines intertwine with frenetic energy. The track includes a rare introspective moment in the middle of the track, sharing a newfound step in the band's songwriting not recently heard, before exploding back into ferocity. While post-punk is the easy descriptor, Soviet Soviet's lens of the genre is much wider, grabbing from coldwave, art punk and more, figuring out a way to make something fresh.

Skeptics
III CD / LP Alternative/Power Electronic FNCT011 // RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW The Skeptics were a postpunk noise band from Palmerston North, New Zealand active from 1979-1990. During their existence as a band Skpetics released 4 albums an EP and 10’’ single before the band disbanded in 1990 due to member David D’Ath’s tragic lost battle with leukaemia. III showcases the bands abrasive and haunting sound as well as their pioneering embracing nature of early sampling technology in a time when jangle guitar pop was prominent on Flying Nun records. Despite being left of center Skeptics III made an impact in New Zealand due to the controversial video for AFFCO named after a meat work company in the North Island. The video shows graphic footage of an animal slaughter house and was banned from national television.
