MARK McGUIRE BEYOND BELIEF The Naacals The Past Presents The Futre Songs Of The Serpent Earth: 2015 The Undying Stars Locked In Our Sky Language (for Cyan) Beyond True Love (song for Rachel) Belief CATALOG #: DOC109 RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 13, 2015 FORMAT: CD/2XLP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 2XLP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: AVANT/EXPERIMENTAL/INDIE KEY MARKETS: LOS ANGELES, CLEVELAND, BOSTON, NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO, SEATTLE, PORTLAND, SAN DIEGO, BALTIMORE

Mark McGuire's albums are, amongst many other things, strong arguments for the album and for the stereo system. They're not just music; they're statements, and they demand to be experienced by the best sonic means available. They're throwbacks, not in style, but intent and effect. Put another way - they don't make them like this anymore. The wall of sounds contained therein constitute a degree of ambition uncommon since the 70’s heyday of McGuire's forebears: Göttsching, Eno, Fripp. This is not laptop music. Beyond Belief, his second full-length for Dead Oceans, finds McGuire now well on the way of his own trip. Fantastical liner note tales written to accompany and set the stage for his mostly-wordless songs delight and confound. Throughout nine tracks we find an unrelenting drive to refine, build upon, focus and maximize the effect of an already remarkably prolific body of work. Though deservedly known for his virtuosic multitracked guitar playing, McGuire in fact plays every bass / synth / piano note, and every beat on the album himself, his vocals more prominent than ever before. 26 months in the making, the passion going into Beyond Belief is self-evident, and the effect is overwhelming. Like many before him, McGuire isn't entirely comfortable with the critically-bestowed 'new age' tag, but the resonance is there particularly in McGuire's prose, and it's not unreasonable that he appeared alongside venerated new age masters Iasos and Laraaji in The New York Times' appraisal of the new age music renaissance ('For New Age, the Next Generation', Mike Rubin, February 16, 2014). Running nearly 80 minutes, the bold and fearless Beyond Belief is McGuire's magnum opus to date, but in truth, there is no end in sight for McGuire's vision, making any such assessment wholly premature.

Bing & Ruth —City Lake Before Bing & Ruth’s halcyonic opus Tomorrow Was the Golden Age, there was City Lake. Initially pressed in an unusually limited edition five years ago, the ensemble’s stunning full-length debut is now released in simultaneously refined and expanded form. With bonus tracks and new, visceral mastering, the album gleams all the more and signals a spree of live performances this fall revisiting the material. As the principal leader of Bing & Ruth, David Moore assembles his orchestral roster according to the scope of each piece and recording setting. For City Lake, Bing & Ruth consisted of eleven members: two clarinetists (Jeremy Viner and Patrick Breiner), two cellists (Greg Heffernan and Leigh Stuart), two vocalists (Becca Stevens and Jean Rohe), a bassist (Jeff Ratner), a lap-steel player (Myk Freedman), a faithful tape-delay engineer (Mike Effenberger), a percussionist (Chris Berry), and Moore on piano. City Lake is shepherded into concrete pastures by Moore’s weightless piano melodies, immersed as they are in grand shapes of breath-like horn, string and voice phrases. Augmented with more percussive proclivity than TWTGA, City Lake establishes Bing & Ruth’s ambient brand through a greater gamut of material mediums. If TWTGA opened its shutter to the imperceptible shifts of transitions between darkness and light, City Lake was composed to be less ethereal, instead embodying a group-oriented musicality and physicality. On City Lake, there are instances of Reich-ian excitement with the hand clapped rhythms of “Rails” and a seance of sorts excorsized by the brush-tapped “Put Your Weight Into It.” Dual track “City Lake / Tu Sei Uwe” culminates the urbanized form of ambience with tonal elements in free-fall, piling-up in a harsh denouement of the album’s title piece. Further into the program David Moore’s intrigue with Gavin Bryars and Thomas Newman finds delicate voice in the hibernative “Here’s What Your Missin,” a track redolent of all the narcotic power of which Bing & Ruth are capable. City Lake sets the standard met by Bing & Ruth’s sonorous sophomore journey Tomorrow Was The Golden Age. In this earlier portrait, the ensemble graces its listeners with gail-force movements from the wake of Bing & Ruth’s gliding wings leaving trails in the skyline. Additional Retail Notes • Key Markets: New York, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Los Angeles, Chicago, Paris, Tokyo • RIYL: Steve Reich, Gavin Bryars, Thomas Newman, Sigur Rós, Nils Frahm • Newly remastered and expanded version of Bing & Ruth’s debut album from 2010 • Follows the release of 2014’s Tomorrow Was The Golden Age, an ascendent album heralded by press and new fans alike • Bing & Ruth will support City Lake with a number of UK and European tour dates in December 2015 • Double LP packaging features printed inner sleeves and highquality download card.

GOLDMUND SO M E T IM ES

ABOUT THIS RECORD Raised in the rural town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Keith Kenniff aka Goldmund started playing piano at age 20, while studying percussion at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Though he may not be a household name, Kenniff's evocative, distinctly American music has become quietly ubiquitous in the past few years, often appearing on NPR, in films, on TV, and in ads for Apple, Facebook, and Google among others. As an artist who spends a great deal of his time producing music for others, it might be surprising to find out that when he has the opportunity to relax and re-center himself, he often chooses to produce music for himself. Recorded over the course of three years, the material on his new album Sometimes functions as a journal, documenting brief moments in Kenniff's day when he could turn to the piano as a source of solace and unending creative possibilities. Kenniff wrote and recorded everything on the album with the exception of the track "A Word I Give", which is a collaboration with preeminent Japanese pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto, who once described Goldmund's music as “…so, so, so beautiful…”.

TRACK LIST

Kenniff's pseudonym is taken from the Herman Hesse novel Narcissus and Goldmund in which the Goldmund character leaves the cloister where he was living and studying in search of meaning for his life. The story resonated with Kenniff when he was searching for a moniker to represent his solo piano work, "I think the way I approached the piano was in the same way: impulsive—searching and feeling things out in the dark." On Sometimes he continues his explorations in the dark; each of the album's 17 pieces were improvised, and recorded in one or two takes, often late at night, after work-for-hire was finished, and the kids were in bed. In an interview with NPR's Weekend Edition Keith Kenniff discussed his appreciation of Civil War era music, and it's ability to covey "…so much story in so few notes." Similarly, these improvisations manage to be richly evocative despite their technical and compositional simplicity, using subtle details and dynamics to express what might otherwise be inexpressible. Throughout Sometimes, Kenniff fully employs the wabi-sabi aesthetic that has always defined Goldmund recordings. "I like mistakes, I like when things don't go perfectly. I do have a tendency to want for things to be perfect and precise, but I have to also realize that a lot of things I like about music and art are very rough and impulsive, the slight imperfections that give something or someone a unique voice," says Kenniff. He goes on to explain that these pieces served as a way for him to "step outside of whatever I was doing and return back to a place of discovery very much like when I first started playing." As we follow him on his path of discovery, we get a glimpse into the world of a young man expressing his myriad feelings and experiences with honesty, and inherently imperfect gestures, which is part of what makes them so relatable and powerful — the local, for a few moments, resonating with the universal.

These are the images and suggested narratives that pervade the spirit of Polish Night Music, the musical collaboration between American filmmaker David Lynch (Twin Peaks, Eraserhead) and Polish concert pianist and composer Marek Zebrowski. Zebrowski and Lynch first met during the Camerimage Film Festival in Lodz, Poland, and started to work together during the organic evolution of Lynch’s Inland Empire. Originally, Zebrowski served as a translator for the shooting of several Lodz-based Polish scenes in Empire, but upon discovering their shared interest in musical experimentation and improvisation, Lynch invited Zebrowski to his Los Angeles studio to participate in a series of musical experiments. From these initial collaborations, inspired by their unique and distinct connections to Poland, emerged a tangible mood and distinctly modern texture that became Polish Night Music. “(Poland) is a landscape that continues to remain at once familiar and completely alien to me,” Zebrowski explains. “Every time I am there, I am surprised by something, and I think for David, Poland certainly represents the process of discovery.” “We don’t know what will happen,” says Lynch, simply. Somewhere in this notknowing exists the experience of a Polish night, and this album is its soundtrack.

TRACKLIST

1. Praise One 2. Praise Two 3. Lifetime 4. Headways 5. Cosmic Loneliness RELEASE BIO

The four members of The Invisible Astro Healing Rhythm Quartet formed in 2010 while studying music at Bakersfield College in sunny Bakersfield, California; a region known (musically) for the twangy, steel-guitar sound popularized by hometown heroes Buck Owens & Merle Haggard. IAHRQ take a decidedly different approach, reaching skyward toward the cosmos & the outer reaches of cosmic, spiritual jazz & Ethio-centric long-form jams. “2” is the aptly named second album from the quartet (the first was released in late 2013 on noted composer & trumpet player Kris Tiner ’s Epigraph Records) was recorded & produced by Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple). “2” finds the ensemble digging deeper and reaching further out than before, honing their mixture of Ethiopian funk, spiritual jazz & cosmic psychedelia to a finer point. The album starts with “Praise One” & “Praise Two”, a pair of complimentar y jams that begin in a free & loose cloud of cosmic dust, before honing in on a loping mellow groove that would fit per fectly next to tunes by Mulatau Astatke or Hailu Mergia. The rest of “2” populates the same headspace, pulling funky drum breaks (”Lifetime”), heady brass arrangements (”Headways”) & proggy psychedelia (”Cosmic Loneliness”) toward and over the event horizon. “2” was mastered by Matthew David McQueen (Leaving Records/ Dublab), with psychedelic artwork by Bruno Borges. This is an LPonly release, pressed on black vinyl & includes a download code.

THE BESNARD LAKES THE GOLDEN LION 12” The Golden Lion The Motorway In The Forest

CATALOG #: JAG275 RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 13, 2015 FORMAT: 12”/DIGITAL 12” BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/ROCK KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK CITY, BROOKLYN, CHICAGO, LOS ANGELES, AUSTIN, PORTLAND, SEATTLE TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NOT EXPORTABLE TO CANADA

The Besnard Lakes return with The Golden Lion 12" - three brand new tracks as a precursor to a new album due in 2016. Make no mistake: these are three tracks of The Besnard Lakes at their most glorious, anthemic, psychedelic best. In late 2014, The Besnard Lakes hit the road with a brand new line up; retaining the core of husband and wife team Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, plus longterm drummer Kevin Laing, they expanded to a five piece adding Sheena Ko (of the High Dials and USA out of Vietnam) plus Robbie Macarthur (also of the High Dials) on synths and guitar respectively. A total rejuvenation of the band, these were some of the most downright glorious and visceral shows The Besnard Lakes had played to date, blowing the roof off venue after venue with an enviable catalogue of anthems. As soon as they were back from tour, Lasek and Goreas hunkered down to write some of the most definitive Besnard Lakes songs to date. The Golden Lion, taken from the forthcoming album, is a perfect distillment of everything that is great about the band. A kaleidoscopic Beatles-esque verse gives way to one of the most glorious Besnard Lakes choruses yet delivered, a true classic in the making. B-sides “The Motorway” and “In the Forest” are exclusive to this 12” and are prime slices of hazy psychedelia. The Besnard Lakes will be announcing a new full length shortly and touring in late 2015 and throughout 2016. - PRESS QUOTES -

PRESS QUOTES / SELLING POINTS: Received NPR’s “Best New Artist of the Year” in 2012. Placement in major commercial spots: (Smart Car, Sony Xperia, Windows 8, American Express, 2013 Grammy Awards Promo) “I really felt like I was witnessing history... in a couple of years we’ll be talking about, ‘Man, I saw him at this intimate little show.” - NPR “Grand and transcendent... the layers of beautiful sound, homage to Japanese culture, and use of violin make 151a a dreamy, pocket-sized symphony, perfect for anyone needing a lift.” - BUST “Sumptuous orchestral brilliance... It’s a stunningly good record, not merely chirpy, zany, and whimsical-but also packed full of harmonious, heart-stopping beauty. If you can imagine ELO’s very best moments combined with Andrew Bird and a bit of weird Bjork introspection-well, even that doesn’t really do it justice. Apart from Pet Sounds, perhaps, I can’t think of a record that’s as singly captivating in its sonic beauty.” THE PORTLAND MERCURY “Kishi Bashi’s music sounds surprisingly basic and natural. He’s got such a great way of thinking about production and melody that I’ve yet to hear a bad song from him.” YOU AIN’T NO PICASO “The music is off-kilter, particularly the opening chants and swirl of guitar and drums. The middle section, though, takes a more even-keeled approach to pop, balancing the looped whistles with peaceful, yet evocative vocals.” - CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND “A weightless, cartwheeling, electro-pop romp that’s all fizz and no fuss” - SPIN

Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym for violin virtuoso, singer, and composer K Ishibashi, who has recorded, toured, and collaborated with artists such as Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal. In 2011, he launched what would become a successful and celebrated solo career, releasing his debut album, “151a”, to praise from the likes of Stereogum, SPIN, and the Huffington Post, earning the title of NPR's "Best New Artist Of The Year" in 2012, and gaining critical acclaim for his 2014 sophomore release, “Lighght”. Though he studied classical composition and considers the violin his primary muse, Kishi Bashi's songs feature a diverse mix of instrumentation and unconventional songwriting, resulting in a unique and experimental sound that defies genre. He flits from bright chamber-pop with frantic, dizzying melodies to soft but emotionally-charged ballads, looping bits and pieces to create complex layers of sound. On November 13th, Kishi Bashi will release “String Quartet Live!”, his third full-length album for Joyful Noise Recordings. It consists of nine songs from both “151a” and “Lighght”, performed live by K and an accompanying string ensemble. Where his first two releases featured an array of stringed instruments, percussion and electronic elements, the new live album finds K's familiar songs reimagined, allowing his soaring vocals to take center stage above a foundation of interweaving strings. Fan favorites like shimmering ballad "Manchester" and the lively "Philosophize In It! Chemicalize With It!" are given new life with updated arrangements and a palpable, infectious energy that can only come from a live performance.

SILAS BLAK

EDITIORIALS (WAR TUNES)

Silas Blak is a unique force in Seattle’s hip-hop scene, spitting complex bars about subjects that rappers seldom approach, let alone attack head-on. Known for his work in formative Pacific Northwest groups Blak Stax, Silent Lambs Project, & Blind Council, Blak remains a valued member of the region’s hip-hop community. Since teaming up with Cabin Games Records in 2014, the veteran MC has wasted no time in unleashing a barrage of new material. Blak’s work at the ‘Cabin’ began with the weekly-song series titled #BlakFriday, which has garnered praise from national blogs such as The Source, Okayplayer, School of Hip-Hop, and many more.

“This mixtape is my first solo in a minute. The playing field has changed but the craft stays the same and I wanted to evolve without making up shit or co-opting the struggle,” Blak said in reference to #BlakFriday, which will be released as a two-part mixtape during summer 2015. Editorials (War Tunes) is the title of Silas Blak’s first full studio album with Cabin Games, and will be released on October 30th, 2015. The album will feature Blak’s signature energy, lyricism and style over the crisp productions of Cabin Games in-house Producer Kjell Nelson.

Numero Group Medusa: First Step Beyond

Catalog Number: NUM048.5 (7” NUM708) Artist: Medusa Title: First Step Beyond Release Date: 11/13/2015 UPC: CD 825764504829 LP 825764504812 7” 825764800877 Available format: CD, LP, 7” Genre: Rock Box Lot: LP: 20, CD: 50 Territory Restrictions: None Vinyl is not returnable Track Listing You must physically hold this album, kneel at its altar; we will fail to describe it. Medusa’s First Step Beyond might have forever shifted the perception of Chicago rock history had it managed to make the leap from tape to its never-realized vinyl pressing. Instead, the conflagation of Sabbath, Hawkwind, and Amon Duul II remained petrified in the Corycian Caverns—otherwise known as the drummer’s basement. Self-produced on four track in 1975, this lone transmission from Medusa’s repertoire appeared on the extremely mysterious Pepperhead label, whose proprietor allegedly disappeared after a bad trip and was never been seen again. Forged in ceremonial mock-velvet, custom embossed in Gorgon-gold and blood-red, and art directed in accordance with the band’s elaborate original stage props and artwork, we have positioned this unreleased opus to finally reach its destination: the stereos of pot-smoking and leather-clad teenagers, young and old. The expanded CD version (also ensconced in ceremonial mock-velvet with embossed artwork) boasts a wealth of new band photos and ephemera as well as three additional tracks not available on the LP. Prior to tracking First Step Beyond, Chicago proto-metal quintet Medusa headed three miles west to the Village of Oak Park and cut their debut 7” at Stephen Wilcox’s Pepperhead custom studio. The resulting versions of “Strangulation” and “Temptress” are a touch further unhinged than their sororal album twins, as phased-out scraps of psychedelia and bleeding solos maxed out Pepperhead’s 8-track rig. Pressed in a strictly limited quantity of 1000 copies.

Shouldnʼt this have happened years ago? Itʼs as if both bands were locked in alternate garage rock orbits, making elliptical runs around the globe, rotating around the same hometown center of Atlanta, Georgia, but only rarely crossing paths for a short tour or a random one-off show. Given both bandsʼ prolific output of 7” singles and split EPs, it seems crazy that itʼs taken nearly a decade of coexistence and mutual admiration for the Peach Stateʼs two favorite troublemakers to team up on a slab of vinyl. Well, the stars finally aligned and the result is a fleeting, glorious cosmic event. Black Lips deliver “Freedom Fries," an instant classic combining the countrified piss and vinegar of cowpunk with the immediate gratification of Southern power pop icons Big Star. The Coathangers once again remind us why theyʼre our favorite heirs to The Raincoatsʼ throne with their indignant anthem “Watch Your Back”. This one-two punch of a split 7” is limited to 1000 (half mustard / half wasabi split
