Didn't It Rain is Jason Molina's first perfect record. Recorded live in a single room, with no overdubs and musicians creating their parts on the fly, the overall approach to the recording was nothing new for Molina. But something in the air and execution of Didn't It Rain clearly sets it apart from his existing body of work. His albums had always been full of space, but never had Molina sculpted the space as masterfully as he does on Didn't It Rain. Perhaps it is that Molina entered the session with fully written songs that allowed this emboldened confidence in chance. The creaks and scraping of strings are all part of the Didn't It Rain choir. So when Molina hoots for another chorus during the album's eponymous opening gambit, it feels less an off-the-cuff call, and more an essential piece of the tone and structure. Midway through the same song, that which takes its name from a traditional piece popularized by Mahalia Jackson, we hear the long, low woosh of a passing bus. Distant traffic has forever been a trope of lo-fi, but here, it is a pristine woosh. The highest of fidelity and sure of purpose. The same can be said for Molina's always remarkable voice, here settling into a matured, assured, and subtly lowered tenor. It all adds up to something near in mood to Neil Young's song "On The Beach," and maybe even Boz Scagg's 1969 self-titled album laid to tape at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio. Didn't It Rain is an ode to the Midwest Rust Belt under which Molina was born and Molina's newfound Chicago home. When we move to a new place, we must truly confront all our own weaknesses and strengths, and Molina puts that all on the table with this one. The album's triple-threat center pieces come by way of "Ring The Bell," "Cross The Road, Molina," and "Blue Factory Flame." Strung together, they present clearly Molina's specific set of mythological symbols that had been forming on previous recordings. It is as heady a middle section as I can recall. But the journey across these three songs — with their circling serpents, their neon-flame wreathed moons, their swinging blades, their debilitating emptiness — also feels like a cleansing, a catharsis, a sort of primal therapy. While demo'd and recorded months before the events of 9/11, Didn't It Rain does seem to somehow consider the mood of the time. It's surely an album about setting roots, but it also offers a moment of solace in a time of overwhelming uncertainty. Here, Molina's now well-known battle with depression aligns with an entire nation's moment of depression. While even more cryptic and spartan, Didn't It Rain's imagery and themes can be poetically linked to another 2002 Chicago-rooted album that tapped into the post-9/11 psyche, Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. This expanded reissue presents Molina's home demos of the record, eight previously unreleased tracks, complete with a distant playground full of children chiming in the background for a few songs. The glorious juxtaposition of Molina's songs' desolation and the blissful playing of children is about as haunting as it gets, friends. — Eric Deines, Bloomington, IN, August, 2014

ARIEL KALMA An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings: 1972 - 1979) An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings: 1972 - 1979) compiles unreleased recordings from the archives of multiversal artist Ariel Kalma. Concerned as much with musicality as spiritual facility, Kalma’s work vibrates aside fellow travelers along the great rainbow in curved air of the 1970s avant-garde. Ariel Kalma’s boundary-blurring electronic music is heard here in radiant detail across a selection of work spanning his early free-jazz and spoken word trips to his infinite modular synthesizer and analogue drum machine meditations. Kalma’s story is one of world travel, musical discovery and ego-abandonment. Yet for an artist who often discarded public recognition in favor of the ascetic truths in music making, An Evolutionary Music offers the imprint of an outright auteur. Born in France, but rarely in one place for long, Ariel Kalma’s 1970s migrations took flight through the decade’s furthest spaces of musical and spiritual invention. As a hired horn for well-known French groups, the young musician toured as far as India in 1972, a place where Kalma would learn circular breathing techniques enabling him to sustain notes without pause against tape-looping harmonies configured through his homemade effects units. Those effects evolved from Kalma’s loyalty to a beloved dual ReVox set-up— two tape machines “chained” together to form a primitive delay unit. Over looped saxophone melodies, Kalma would mix in all shades of polyphonic color, synthesizing fragments of poetry with ambient space or setting modal flute melodies to rippling drum machine patterns and starlit field recordings. In France during the mid-1970s, Kalma was staffed as a technician at Pierre Henry’s legendary Institut National Audiovisuel, Groupe de Recherches Musicales (INA GRM) studios - the same music concréte laboratory that spawned masterpieces by members Luc Ferrari, Iannis Xenakis, and Bernard Parmegiani. Like his predecessors and colleagues at INA GRM, Kalma’s relationship to sound was both formal and non-hierarchical. To Kalma, all music existed as related universal patterns, in perfect harmony with the people, places and environments it was created. Kalma’s recorded output of the 1970s culminated in the now scarcelyavailable Les Temps des Moissons (trans. The Time of Harvest) in 1975 and Osmose in 1978, a masterpiece of birdsong exploration. Osmose is double album featuring sculptor Richard Tinti, who had supplied Kalma with hours of field recordings from the rainforests of Borneo. An Evolutionary Music harvests uncatalogued music made between Kalma’s private press records and onward through the many small-batch cassette releases Kalma would tender. With this collection of musical hybridity and distinct genre-corrosion, Ariel Kalma’s righteous bucking of both popular music trends and the academic tenets of the avant-garde falls squarely in the spirit of other renegades of sacred new-music such as Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Charlemagne Palestine.

Kid Millions & Jim Sauter Fountain LP Release date Dec 2, 2014 Catalog# FV93 Format LP Packaging Regular jacket UPC 656605409313 Limited 800 Box lot 35 Genre Avant rock Territory restrictions None Key markets Brooklyn (hometown) RIYL Oneida, Borbetomagus, Colin Stetson, Lightning Bolt, Albert Ayler, Pharmakon Vinyl is non-returnable
Drummer Kid Millions and saxophonist Jim Sauter vaporize the annals of rock ‘n’ roll n’ jazz into pulsating feedback/propulsion on Fountain -their second album. Across six pieces they explore massively hypnotic tonal harmonics and torrential rhythms. This is hardcore abstraction from two New York sherpas yanking us headlong into a third-eye odyssey, surpassing altitudes merely attempted by others. Kid is founding member of Oneida and the ace behind the percussionfocused Man Forever. Sauter is synonymous with the 35-year juggernaut Borbetomagus -- pioneers of sound/jazz vivisection and inexorable vision. Since 2012 these two pushed forth this magnificent grandeur, merging physical power/sweat and sculpted electricity/stretched skins. While both are known for feats of extreme artistic endurance, as a duo they opt for ferocious concentration -- a savage pop-style of density and texture. Comparisons to any live-free-or-die drum-sax duo is moot here. In whiffs, Fountain is maybe reminiscent of Fushitsusha’s heaviest but more likely the final descent of that plane full of rugby players who gobbled each other up after crashin’ into the Andes in ‘72. Either way, it makes asses shake.

Selling points • Kid Millions is the rhythm behind NYC stalwarts Oneida, mastermind/composer of Man Forever and recent Spiritualized drummer. • Recordings of sax legend Jim Sauter outside of Borbetomagus are mega rare, before this duo he’d pretty much only recorded with Sonic Youth, The Blue Humans and Scarcity of Tanks. • Performances planned for NYC around release date.
As an omnipotent duo, neither Kid or Sauter anchors the other, instead they smash the fulcrum and spin perpetually in free-fall. LP in edition of 800, includes download.

Waiting on Egypt
In founding Swell Maps, the post-punk prefacing Birmingham art-snots, Nikki Sudden and his drumming brother Epic Soundtracks charted new territory for racket and corrosive guitar. But after folding Swell Maps at the dawn of the ’80s, Nikki Sudden plowed through another decade’s worth of terrifically fertile ground. Drawing on his devotion to the Rolling Stones and T. Rex—alongside guitarist Dave Kusworth as Jacobites, plus a cheekily named cohort of British sidemen—Nikki Sudden cut a string of raw, inspired rock ‘n’ roll records, etched with double edged travel melancholia and hard-bitten punk dejection. This career-spanning 7LP box set compiles Sudden’s landmark solo LPs Waiting On Egypt and The Bible Belt, the Dave Kusworth-era LPs Jacobites and Robespierre’s Velvet Basement, Sudden’s Rowland S. Howard collaboration Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc, and his Creation-issued masterpieces Texas and Dead Men Tell No Tales. Limited to just 500 copies, this set also includes Sudden’s debut solo single “Back to The Start” b/w “Ringing On My Train.”

DFA is pleased to announce a new 12”EP by Eric Copeland. Ms Pretzel is a 4 track, 20-minute EP of brand new material by Eric Copeland (Black Dice, Terrestrial Tones). This is Eric’s return to DFA after the release of an acclaimed single on Ron Morelli’s underground dance juggernaut L.I.E.S., which followed his beloved 2013 album “Joke In The Hole”, his solo debut for DFA. The music on Ms Pretzel most certainly continues to break new sonic ground, a process which has gradually unfolded over the last few years via many prior works on seminal underground labels such as Underwater Peoples, Escho, Post Present Medium, and Catsup Plate, among many others. Ms Pretzel takes Eric’s outsider fascination with 4/4 dance music and twists it yet again. It is the sound of Eric Copeland throwing a wobbly dance party in a junkyard. DFA could not be more excited to host this gritty event. “If Copeland is interested in the conventions of clubland, it’s at the point where someone’s puking on their shoes outside the venue, a distant throb of bass beating into their brain through the brickwork.” - Pitchfork “The rhythms might be recognisably house or hip-hop, but Copeland pulls and squeezes their structures like accordions.” - Resident Advisor “Though constantly teetering on a knife’s edge - to be expected in such mental, syncopated mashups - this is wildly colourful and knowingly absurd music.” - The Quietus

T H E C O AT H A N G E R S / THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES Sex Beat b/w Energy Drink and The Long Walk Home Back in 2009, Suicide Squeeze Records labelmates These Arms Are Snakes and The Coathangers teamed up for a series of tour dates on the East Coast. It was a perfect pairing: The Coathangers’ jagged catabolic garage rock and These Arms Are Snakes bleary and blighted artcore made for an evening of celebratory chaos. But These Arms Are Snakes’ seven-year run came to an abrupt end a few months later, leaving a final unfinished recording—a cover of Lost Sounds’ “Energy Drink and The Long Walk Home”—gathering dust in the vaults. In the five years since the Snakes’ dissolution, The Coathangers have toured relentlessly on their three albums for Suicide Squeeze; releasing a slew of split 7”s with various road comrades along the way. Though These Arms Are Snakes remain broken up, the finishing touches on “Energy Drink” were finally wrapped up in 2014, and it seemed only appropriate to pair the song with a track from their old tourmates. The Coathangers are still hard at work touring on their highly lauded album from earlier this year, Suck My Shirt, but they found the time to counterbalance the Snakes’ Lost Sounds cover with their take on The Gun Club’s “Sex Beat”. Suicide Squeeze is proud to release the split single worldwide on a limited vinyl run of 1,000 (clear w/ red and black splatter) 7”s with an accompanying download code. The songs are also available digitally.

AUDACITY Counting the Days b/w Mind Your Own Business If you’ve lived anywhere near Fullerton, California over the last decade, or if you’ve paid any attention to the recent flux of sun-baked, surf-soaked power pop proliferating along the Western coastline of the U.S. in recent years, chances are high you’ve taken notice of Orange County’s rambunctious guitar pop mavens Audacity. And if you’ve taken in Fullerton’s pride-and-joy both in a sweaty, dingy live environment and on your turntable, you’re undoubtedly aware that there is a certain unbridled quality to the band that can’t quite be replicated on record. While last year’s Butter Knife LP came pretty damn close to capturing Audacity in all their wild and ecstatic splendor, they’ve finally captured the triumphant bedlam of their live show with their latest 7”, “Counting the Days” b/w “Mind Your Own Business”. The A-side is Audacity in all their ragged glory—righteous guitar leads, buoyant choruses, and unhinged energy. For the flipside, the OC boys pay tribute to British post-punkers Delta 5 with an explosive cover of their debut single from 1979. “Counting the Days” b/w “Mind Your Own Business” is available worldwide on vinyl and digital formats courtesy of Suicide Squeeze Records. The vinyl version is limited to 750 copies (250 on fluorescent pink vinyl, 500 on black) and includes a download coupon.
