Sahel Sounds

El Wali

Tiris About the album An amazing and rare studio recording of 1990s Polisario music! The album is a standout example of the Sahrawi political folk style that mixes traditional modes with Western scales and instrumentation. response vocals, The repertoire of El Wali is fiery and inspirational, a call to arms - with national anthems, celebrations of political anniversaries, and religious pleas for peace, with call and response duets, backed with a synthesizer, programmed drums, and electric guitar. Nomadic inhabitants of Western Sahara, the Sahrawi movement for liberation began in the 1970s and has continued until today. Sahrawi political folk music dates back to the origins and has played an integral role in the struggle, with political anthems creating a national identity. One of the first Saharan music to incorporate the electric guitar, the style was hugely influential on the better know Tuareg guitar genre. The later addition of synthesizer and programmed rhythms further transformed the sound, becoming a foundation of Sahrawi music. Recorded in Belgium in 1994 while on tour, this version of El Wali performed a style reflecting the popular music of the refugee camps. “Tiris” is a refreshing production with none of the typical World Music polish of the 90s. This evidently led to its unsuccessful release in the West. Originally released only in as a small run CD for OXFAM Belgium, the CD quickly disappeared and is impossible to find. In West Africa, however, it became a viral success and the defining representative Sahrawi music. In 2012 a track was released on “Music from Saharan Cellphones Vol 2” and only after an arduous search over 8 years (leading through Spain to the Canary Islands to Tindouf and eventually to Belgium) the artists, the studio, and the original recording were tracked down. A co-release with Badawi Sahrawi, the first Sahrawi run record label.

VARIOUS ARTISTS CROWN JEWELS VOL. 1 Big Crown is proud to present our first compilation on the label, Crown Jewels Vol. 1. This is something of a highlight reel for what we have released in the three years that we’ve been around.

CATALOG NUMBER: BCR100lp-C1 / DBC100-FL RELEASE DATE: 12/06/19 FORMAT: Colored LP, Digital 7” BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: Funk / Soul / Pop / Rock KEY MARKETS: New York, California, Chicago, France, United Kingdom, Japan. TERRITORY RESTRICTION: NONE VINYL NOT RETURNABLE

Some of our artists are world famous at this point while some of them are still under the radar. It’s been extremely satisfying for us when the fans of one Big Crown artist discover another one because they are label mates. We are putting out this comp with the hope that it will continue that process, and, this is a damn good listen. Even though not all BC artists can be found in the same aisle of the record store, after listening to Crown Jewels Vol. 1, it should be clear how they all fit on the same record label. When we started Big Crown we wanted to have a label that’s only boundaries were defined by our taste, not by genre. We think that this is a perfect example of that; and this is only volume one. Thank you to everyone who has supported us thus far and please stay tuned as we have plans to continue pushing the envelope and putting out tunes we believe in. TRACK LISTING SIDE A:

The Juan Maclean The Future Will Come

From the original 2009 press release: Since the turn of the 21st century, DFA club music maestro Juan Maclean has been laying groundwork. First, there were killer singles, from “By the Time I Get to Venus” in 2002, to “Give Me Every Little Thing”, to last year’s international club hit & critical year-end favorite “Happy House”. There was a debut full-length (Less Than Human, 2005); remixes for colleagues like Air, Chicken Lips, Daft Punk, Dave Gahan, Matthew Dear; international tours with LCD Soundsystem, Cut Copy and Shocking Pinks; and DJ gigs from Telluride to Tel Aviv. Now comes the next stage of the operation – album two has arrived, entitled The Future Will Come. Phase One: “I was very much influenced by going on tour with my live band for a couple years.” Rather than retreat to a recording studio in Woodstock, NY, and toil in solitude, he brought along Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel (also known to DFA fans as Holy Ghost!) to lay down parts. “I had already done enough on my own,” concedes the seasoned studio whiz. “With very rare exceptions, music is always made better by having the influence of other people.” Which brings us to Phase Two: “The next guideline was revisiting the Human League,” reveals Maclean - specifically the lineup responsible for the 1981 international bestseller Dare. Watch the effect the opening bars of “Happy House” have on a packed nightclub; the exuberance it triggers in listeners easily matches the giddy heights of that time-tested synth-pop classic. Juan enlisted creative foil and DFA mainstay Nancy Whang (also an agent of LCD Soundsystem). She was a willing co-conspirator. “The very first song we worked on, he already had his vocal part, and wanted mine to serve as a counterpoint,” she remembers. “From there, I could hear the male-female call-and-answer.” With these points set, Juan and Nancy wrote and recorded the album quickly. Rather than elongate ideas into epic 12-inch singles, they strived to keep sounds and structures crisp and succinct. Focus was maintained via ruthless edits and repeated spins of “SexyBack.” The results range from the bittersweet parry-and-thrust of “One Day” to the android R&B of “The Station.” At the furthest extreme, the spare, desolate “Human Disaster” serves as a chilling contrast to the climatic reprise of “Happy House.” Polished, precise, fully-realized and flawlessly executed from start to finish, The Future Will Come stands poised to disarm listeners in a surprising, rewarding way only certain albums can manage.

ABOUT THIS RECORD Leave Ruin took shape while touring and collaborating with Lou Rogai (Lewis & Clarke). Taking cues from such luminaries as Neil Young (On the Beach era) and a burgeoning Springsteen, on Leave Ruin Timonthy Showalter extends his musical gesture and searches to find modesty in the midst of confusion, addressing insecurities and settling existential debt with a simple and beautiful delivery. The personification of a Midwestern Grandfather's advice, his songs smack with hard truth and poignant severity, from child-like naivete to heart worn wisdom... sparse guitar, hammond, rhodes and wooden instruments support an atmosphere that is tender and raw, at times uncomfortable, shockingly candid, and unforgettable.

"At heart it's a man and a guitar in the infinite tradition of men with guitars. Imagine a less dispassionate Damien Jurado, a quieter Neil Young, or a Bon Iver whose lyrics follow a discernible narrative thrust." - Interview Magazine "A debut as weathered and warm as an old down comforter. And just as timeless, too...Showalter's inner tug-of-war between dark humor and plain old darkness has made for one hell of a debut." - eMusic - Melissa Maerz

ABOUT THIS RECORD On Dark Shores, Showalter trades in his obscure references, convoluted plotlines, and grandiosity for bite-sized versions of his smoky-flavored brooding folk: condensed and accessible. He teamed up with John Vanderslice as producer, gave him some creative license, and ended up with a record every bit as cryptic and ambitious as its predecessor, even if the songs’ lengths and catchy melodies might sound otherwise. There are the record’s insane themes. Most, if not all, of these songs come from the perspective of a lonely, heartbroken man, stranded on the surface of the moon, longing for a former lover, cogitating the mistakes he had made with her, dwelling on the past, and firing flares up into the atmosphere in hopes of bringing her back to him. Then there’s the record’s peculiar, striking production, with Vanderslice’s signature messy hi-fi touch rippling through these songs’ simple anatomies. True to its name, the record’s surface glistens atop densely dark shores — a bottomless abyss pulling down on everything above it. These songs all have such richness and depth to them, you can honestly read the whole record differently with each listen.”Little Wishes”, for instance, sounds like cutesy folk abducted by aliens. Pitch-shifters warp plucks like small waves along a current of downbeat piano keys and seemingly arbitrary digi-fuzzed firecrackers, mimicking flares fired off into the dark sky. “Just love me again,” Showalter bellows, with intense urgency and longing. A bright first impression eventually yields a very dark experience, just as the moon only glows because of the darkness that surrounds it. Realizing his and his loved ones’ ultimate fates, our narrator leaves everything he knows on Earth behind, at the prospect of reaching the bright moon he sees as a beacon from so far away, only to be left stranded in its darkness, shooting lights up into the sky in aimless pleas for salvation. That’s a heartbreaking, beautiful thing to hear. – Drew Litowitz, Consequence of Sound

PRESS QUOTES “Shores is such an elegant and melodious dystopian album, but it navigates gracefully away from clunky doom or preachy drivel. It’s an apt soundtrack for star-gazing strolls in the fading days of what’ll prove to be one of this Earth’s hottest years on record. Maybe it’s time for a move to the moon?” – PASTE These songs all have such richness and depth to them…a heartbreaking, beautiful thing to hear.” – Consequence of Sound

Lao Dan with Paul Flaherty, Randall Colbourne, Damon Smith Live At Willimantic Records

This is the American debut release from Lao Dan, China’s emerging free player on bamboo flute, suona and alto saxophone. Dan’s voice is starkly unique, even among the blurred lines of international Improv/Jazz. He’s steeped in native traditions yet eagerly obliterates those boundaries with ecstatic intensity and haunting melodies. His dense reedy, drones and jagged melodic shrieks are described as a “Whitmanian yawp,” by Marc Medwin in the liner notes. For his inaugural U.S. performance, Dan is welcomed by the outlaw forefathers of New England avant grade: saxophonist Paul Flaherty and percussionist Randall Colbourne. These longtime duo partners, joined by Damon Smith on double bass, show no hesitation in charging head-on with new radical brother. The album’s opening moments simmer as Dan and Flaherty meditate at the bottom registers before exploding into a multiphonic sustain of runs and melodic jabs. Smith and Colbourne rattle and roar. It’s a splattering overture that eventually resolves as suona and sax merge into a piercing gesture of heartbreaking unity. It turns this record store gig into a point of transcultural definition. Recorded April 2018 at Willimantic Records in Willimantic, Connecticut.
