Formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums; globetrotting Texan trio Khruangbin present their second album ‘Con Todo El Mundo’, set for release on 26th January 2018. Whereas their 2015 debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was influenced by 60s and 70s Thai cassettes and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk, ‘Con Todo El Mundo’ hops east over India to take inspiration in similarly under discovered funk and soul sounds of the Middle-East, particularly from Iran. Laura Lee explains the album’s title: “My grandpa would always ask me ‘Como me quieres?’ (‘how much do you love me’?), and he’d only ever accept one response. ‘Con todo el mundo’ (With all the world).” Throughout ‘Con Todo El Mundo’, Laura Lee’s melodic low-end theory, Mark’s lyrical, free-role guitar lines, and DJ’s ever-steady, ever-ready backbeat form something greater than their parts. A vibe-synchronous soul-unit travelling the planet, honing their craft, absorbing the sights, sounds and feels from cultures across the globe, processing them through the Khruangbin filter and gifting the result... with all the world.

Big Black was started by Steve Albini in 1982 while he was attending Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Lungs, the first Big Black release was recorded by Steve on a borrowed 4-track. He played everything on the EP himself - except the sax bleating courtesy of pal John Bohnen and the drums courtesy of Roland. Soon after, Steve recruited Jeff Pezzati (Naked Raygun) on bass, and Santiago Durango (also Naked Raygun) joined them on guitar. In 1983, together with live drummer Pat Byrne, they recorded the Bulldozer EP. By 1984, the band had done some touring and recorded the Racer X EP and the start of the Il Duce 7”. After that, Jeff returned to Naked Raygun and was replaced by Dave Riley. In 1985, Big Black recorded their first full-length, Atomizer, as well as finishing the Il Duce 7”. Atomizer was released in 1986 along with the release of the Hammer Party compilation CD. In 1987, the Headache EP and Heartbeat 7” were released. That same year, the band recorded and released the 7” of The Model/He’s A Whore as well as their second full-length album, Songs About Fucking. They toured extensively (for Big Black). And they broke up.

The year is 2003. The place: Seattle, Washington. In a tiny room packed some really nice gear, Jared Warren and Coady Willis recorded the first full-length Big Business album, Head For The Shallow. Both Jared and Coady had previously recorded with Phil Ek, and both really liked him as person, as well as his production sensibilities. Phil had made many records at AVAST! Studios and was right at home, which made the band feel a lot more comfortable. Says Coady, “I remember listening to the rough mixes of the O.G. in the van and getting super excited. It was sounding great, just like a real record! I still feel proud of this album. It made me feel confident that we could do more.�

The timeline of writing and recording Here Come the Waterworks is intertwined with Big Business’ move to Los Angeles to play with the Melvins. Although Jared Warren and Coady Willis had not yet toured with the Melvins, they were living and practicing in L.A., and had just recorded (a)Senile Animal. Most of the songs on Here Come the Waterworks were already fully formed at this point. Big Business headed back up to Seattle to once again record with Phil Ek at AVAST! Studios. David Scott Stone was along to play guitar, with the idea that he would be in the band playing live as well. As the recording progressed, it became clear that Dave would be unable to tour so that kind of put the kibosh on him being in the band. Says Coady, “I think we made a good record, the songs were starting to get a little more ambitious.”

Toshi Kasai had been playing guitar with Big Business (Jared Warren and Coady Willis) for a while at the time of the Mind the Drift release. The band had been touring pretty heavily with the Melvins before this record was made. Says Coady, “I think we wanted to elevate the songs and make it really grand, like a Queen record. It was definitely the hardest record we had made to this day. The session was plagued with technical glitches from the get go, so it never felt like we picked up any momentum. To my memory, it always felt like we were under this insane time crunch every step of the way. So as you can imagine the fun factor was pretty low. I think we learned an important lesson about how we best operate in the studio, and what we needed to have fun and feel creative and comfortable.�

• • • • • Criminal, The Soft Moon’s fourth studio album, is a confessional work. Through the stark lens of shame and guilt that has followed Luis Vasquez since a violent childhood growing up within the humming ambient sprawl of ’80s Mojave Desert, here he documents the gut-wrenching sound of going to war with himself. Battling with his own sanity, self-hatred, insecurity, self-entitlement and grappling with the risk of these things transforming him into a person he despises, Vasquez has laid his feelings bare with this: his confession and most self-reflective work to date. “Guilt is my biggest demon and has been following me since childhood. Everything I do strengthens the narrative that I am guilty,” Vasquez reflects. “The concept of Criminal is a desperate attempt to find relief by both confessing to my wrongdoings and by blaming others for their wrongdoings that have affected me.” Criminal marks a striking and important chapter in his self-exploration, both artistically and emotionally. As a young musician living in Oakland, Vasquez began to try and process the narrative of his difficult upbringing veiled through musical exploration. Working with producer Maurizio Baggio at La Distilleria in Bassano Del Grappa, Italy, Criminal sees Vasquez further explore putting his lyrics at the forefront and letting his raw emotions flow. The album begins with a confrontation with his true self through the torrid bass lines and searing vocals of “Burn,” a song evoking a loss of control akin to demonic possession, stating: “Eyes, reflecting the person that I am, and it burns”. In this track, Vasquez’s guilt bores deeper and deeper into a condemnation that ultimately is: “Fire, hell is where I’ll go to live, so I burn.” The album is Vasquez’s way of holding himself accountable and seeking redemption for the abuse he inflicts on himself, and acknowledges roots in the abuse which, inflicted upon him as a child, broke him.

RELEASE BIO Montero is Australian musician and artist Ben Montero. New album Performer was recorded at Mark Ronson’s Tileyard studios in London. It is co-produced by Ben, Tame Impala/Pond/Gum’s Jay Watson, and Grammy Award winning engineer Riccardo Damian. Performer glories in the widescreen soft rock tradition, updating the romantic classicism of golden era love songs with a psychedelic pop brush. Montero's music evokes the extended soundscapes and textures of 70s prog, the easy listening adult weirdness of Jimmy Webb and Burt Bacharach, and the sports arena pounding of vintage MOR rock sometimes all in the space of one song. With an emphasis on clear vocals, soaring melodies, lush instrumentation and dreamy glam pomp, Performer ventures into gently surreal realms of romance, yearning, and wonder. As a visual artist, Ben's much-loved comic-based style highlights the universality of small human moments via a cast of furry (or sometimes slimy) friends. When writing the last Red River Dialect album, which was called Tender Gold and Gentle Blue, my everyday was infused with a magnificent, radiant sadness. A sudden space of loss had opened up and swallowed all sorts of exhausting but addictive inclinations: to hunt for volatility, nurture delusions and hide in distractions. Eventually these waves of sad-joy began to subside and I found myself back on familiar ground with a new understanding of what I was seeking: freshness, movement and vibrancy. I was learning how to feel perky and how to ride on the wind; the one that is called lungta in Tibetan (and is also a horse). I looked for this energy in chords, rhythms and words. When my friend, the great songwriter Joan Shelley, invited me out on a UK tour to play an opening set, I recognised it as an opportunity to develop these new songs and to try them out at shows. A couple of them took shape before the tour, but most followed after. Hearing Joan, Nathan Salsburg and Glen Dentinger play and sing every night brought me many glimpses of the fresh genuineness I was seeking. I tried to turn those glimpses into songs. I wanted to make a whole album about lungta, to be called Windhorse, after the English translation of the term. It was also going to be a concept album about bells of all kinds. I used to ring church bells when I was a child in the English change ringing style. I have strong memories of the smell of old wood and damp stone, the delirious cacophony of the six bells, the sight of the dancing ropes and the fear of breaking the stay. The stay is the small piece of wood upon which the heavy bell comes to rest in an upright position when the ringing is done. If the bell is brought to rest too roughly the stay may be broken, causing the bell to flail around its axle and whipping the rope up into the tower. The leader of our group of campanologists, a Cornish stone-hedger by trade, told tales of ringers who had been whipped up along with the rope and killed, and my experience of ringing became fused with this fear of losing control. The coil of coloured wool around the portion of the rope that you grip is called the sally, a name derived from Latin and Old French words for leaping, salire and sailie respectively, and related to the English somersault and salmon, the name the Romans gave to the fish that leaps. As I wrote the songs, this attempt at conceptual coherency started to crumble. Half-familiar sadnesses and new-old confusions poked through the rubble. For a time I tried to keep them out. Eventually I gave up, knowing that to treat these experiences like enemies or unwelcome strangers was dishonest and stale. And so each song that makes up this new album called Broken Stay Open Sky is a coming together of pain and love, selves and others, embraced together in the same broken heart, which is moving-joy and still-sad. The cover photograph portrays Gull Rock, as seen from Trebarwith Strand in North Cornwall. Once I had seen this image, the work of Dayna Cowper, it would not leave my imagination, and I hoped it could become a part of this album. Initially I wanted to conceal it inside the album’s sleeve; a double-lurking cave on an inside horizon of childhood memories. But it would not stay hidden, and strangely it shone through every other proposal for the cover. So now Gull Rock sits there like the hub shared by thirty spokes: Thirty spokes converge at the hub, but emptiness completes the wheel. Chapter 11, Tao Te Ching I am glad that this album is not entirely what I intended it to be, and even gladder for the companionship of the band who articulate these songs into a real-shared living. Simon Drinkwater, Coral Rose, Ed Sanders, Robin Stratton and I had spent a few years playing mostly acoustically, without drums or percussion. In the summer of 2016 we had a fortuitous meeting with drummer Kiran Bhatt, who then joined the band, allowing us to get a little more electric and dynamic once more. Over the summer we worked up these songs, recording over three days in October 2016 with our friend Jimmy Robertson at the console. We set up as a live band in the room, which was not a big room, and so there is a merging of our playing into each other’s microphones, a bleeding that even Pro Tools cannot efface without taking the song away too. There were, however, a handful of overdubs, a couple of tricks, and a little bit of corruption. There was a shadowed rock like a cave in the sky, from which the wheel of a ringing bell turned. It’s a lightning-fast, real-time cut-up of melody and bare-knuckle action that swings between the avant garde and hardcore be-bop. Sakata is backed by his famed rhythm crew Chikamorachi -- drummer Chris Corsano and acoustic bassist Darin Gray -- and joined by composer and pianist Masahiko Satoh. Sakata and Satoh emerged out of the late-1960s Tokyo jazz scene -- Satoh already releasing albums and Sakata soon joining the famed The Yamashita Trio -- and while they’ve since become uncompromising pillars of free music and vision this marks their first proper album together. LP As live albums go, Tashi Dorji and Tyler Damon nail it down. No matter the crowd -- head thrashers, Instagram zombies, shaken jazzniks -- the shadow lines of feedback and bombastic percussive bombs are always at peak intensity. Through telepathic engagement the Bhutanese-born guitarist Dorji and Midwestern drummer Damon act with one-mind destruction as Leave No Trace: Live In St. Louis perfectly captures. It’s a pure sound for these disruptive, politically tumultuous times. DFA is proud to present the long-awaited debut EP by London’s Marcus Marr, Familiar Five. Influenced by classic soul, rock, disco, and acid house, the multiinstrumentalist, DJ, and producer makes spacy dance music, often including percolating synths, funky bass guitar, and vocals. Over the last few years, Marr has been releasing acclaimed records via DFA Records, including “Brown Sauce,” named in Pitchfork’s Tracks in 2015, and “The Music,” named one of the “Best Dance Tracks of 2013” by SPIN. A regular at Berlin’s famed nightclub Berghain/Panorama Bar since 2014, the lifelong music obsessive’s first encounters with dance music were acid house records, which grew his vinyl collection of rock and soul, and attending all night parties under Brixton’s St Matthews Church. Traveling to Brighton’s famous Zap Club to watch DJ Harvey play a lengthy set, he saw the kind of power a DJ can wield over a willing crowd. At last, Marr returns to DFA with a collection of elastic bassline stompers, reminiscent of early Daft Punk. The title track “Familiar Five” originally began with a rock riff, which he later repurposed as the backbone of a piece of slow, dark, dance music. Inspired by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Faust, and Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Marr explains that he wanted to make something spooky and simple – a song utilizing “very few elements, with a throb and synth vomit.” On the flip side, lead single “High Times” channels the electric guitar stylings of Nile Rodgers circa 1979, and makes good use of the producer’s trademark whizzing synths as well as vocals from collaborator Nandi Bhebe. “Love Release” and “Rocketship” are both equally effective tracks built for the dancefloor.
