On the heels of her Conatus world tour, Nika Roza Danilova was offered an opportunity to perform at one of the most prestigious modern art museums in the world, NY’s Guggenheim. Rather than doing her standard electronic set she decided she wanted to work with a classical composer who could arrange her songs for a quartet. She recruited legendary industrial pioneer JG Thirlwell (Foetus) to do the arrangements who since his work as Foetus, has been scoring and composing symphonic arrangements for a variety of projects including currently scoring Adult Swim’s Venture Brothers series. Thirlwell’s oeuvre runs the gamut from orchestrations, big band, and cathartic noise-rock to abstract electronics, sound sculpture, and chamber music, thus making him the perfect collaborator to help realize Danilova’s vision. Danilova explains her intentions with this album, “Versions is about the bone of the music; taking approximations from past records and turning them inside out. With all framework exposed, the songs are given a new medium in which to evolve and bloom into their own tiny worlds.” Removing the bulk of electronics from these songs gives them the space to breath, thusly opening them up to be received by a much wider audience who perhaps haven’t previously ventured into the techno-pop/ industrial arena. Press: • “Zola Jesus conquered the Guggenheim.” — Village Voice • “Nika Roza Danilova’s performance was not confined by the normal genres and subgenres we affix to music, it was truly art.” — eMusic • Zola Jesus has been featured on the cover of The Fader, Modzik, Obskure, SelfTitled, & Rumour Magazine • She has had 4 syncs on “Grey’s Anatomy,” two international film trailer syncs for “Romeo & Juliet” & “Elysium” & been featured on “Gossip Girl” and “Skins.” • Conatus debuted at #2 on the CMJ charts, NPR premiered as “1st Listen.”

JULIANNA BARWICK NEPENTHE Offing The Harbinger One Half Look Into Your Own Mind Pyrrhic Labyrinthine Forever Adventurer Of The Family Crystal Lake Waving To You CATALOG #: DOC069 RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 20, 2013 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: AVANT/EXPERIMENTAL/INDIE KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK CITY, LOS ANGELES, PORTLAND, SEATTLE, AUSTIN, DALLAS, PHILADELPHIA, CHICAGO, MINNESOTA

Julianna Barwick's art is equal parts force and beauty. Her music finds its motor in significant events in her own life, but they are abstracted into a sense of sonic wonderment, a radiance that you could say is her signature sound. That radiance has been taken to new zeniths with Nepenthe, her third full-length album, which was recorded in Reykjavík, Iceland, in the dark cold days of February. "Everything I was making was visceral – the record represents some serious emotional stuff," she confirms, while at the same time she raves with enormous positivity about the unique recording environment. Alex Somers (musician/producer of Sigur Rós, Jónsi, Jónsi & Alex) invited her to Iceland in the first place. For Julianna, who was blown away at a Sigur Rós show in 2002, it was a dream come true. "That was the fastest email I ever wrote: “Yes!” Who would say no to that?" Somers produced and engineered the record and brought in local Icelandic musicians who turned out to make crucial contributions: string ensemble Amiina, guitarist Róbert Sturla Reynisson from Múm, and a choir of teenage girls.

"[The Magic Place] has the feel of a modest classic of post-millennial ambient music, the kind of record that sounds gorgeous and immersive on first listen and never loses its sparkle, whether playing in the background or filling a room with its swells." -PITCHFORK, BEST NEW MUSIC "[Barwick's] ethereal multi-tracked harmonies have the devotional quality of gospel choirs, and the oddball allure of Bjork or Yoko Ono. At times, watching Ms. Barwick’s set was like watching someone give birth, in the magic-of-life sense…The music was dense and asphyxiating. The end of each number came as a relief – the small pleasure of a chance to breathe between the greater pleasures of not wanting to have to." -NEW YORK TIMES

BRAIDS Flourish // Perish TRACKLISTING 1 Victoria 2 Fruend 3 December 4 Hossak 5 Girl 6 Together 7 Ebben 8 Amends 9 Juniper 10 In Kind

"It’s heady music about the body and its imperatives. And it’s every bit as mesmerizing and vertiginous as desire can be." – New York Times “The quartet's bracing debut Native Speaker is almost Inception-like in its warping of reality, equally tactile and dissolute, cerebral and surreal and ultimately haunting for its refusal to answer questions the same way twice.” – Pitchfork

CATALOGUE NUMBER: ABT035 ARTIST: BRAIDS TITLE: Flourish // Perish

After having released their critically acclaimed debut “Native Speaker” in 2011, and hot off the heels of their 12" single “In Kind // Amends”, BRAIDS have returned with their new LP “Flourish // Perish” out August 20th on Arbutus Records. After 18 months of touring in support of Native Speaker, along with the departure of a band member, the group secluded themselves in their Montreal studio for a year of writing and recording. While “Native Speaker” was written in an organic and live environment, the group sought to explore a more introspective and electronic approach to songwriting. Sonically, the songs from these sessions are delicate and tight, yet thoughtfully open up to the rich lushness reminiscent of their older material. Lyrically they are honest and vulnerable, demonstrating the group's emotional growth and maturity since their last record. With “Flourish // Perish”, BRAIDS marks an exciting new partnership with Montreal-based label Arbutus Records.

SARAH NEUFELD Hero Brother CD / 180gLP / DL

STREET DATE: 20 AUGUST 2013 • DEBUT SOLO RECORD BY THE VIOLINIST FROM ARCADE FIRE & BELL ORCHESTRE • RECORDED IN BERLIN BY ACCLAIMED PRODUCER AND PIANIST NILS FRAHM, WHO ALSO PLAYS ON TWO SONGS Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in Montréal, Canada. Best known as a member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre and has performed and recorded with many other groups, including The Luyas, Esmerine and Little Scream. Neufeld began developing pieces for solo violin in a more formal and focused sense in 2011, counting Bela Bartok, Steve Reich, Iva Bittova and Arthur Russell among the formative influences for her solo work, in tandem with an ear for the textures and sensibilities of indie rock, avant-folk and contemporary electro-acoustic music. Neufeld’s debut solo album Hero Brother channels all of the above, flowing through shifting atmospheres and oscillating between stately ambience, restrained emotive études, and raw kinetic energy. Hero Brother was recorded in Berlin by pianist and producer Nils Frahm, documenting Neufeld's performances in a number of locations with sitespecific acoustics, including an abandoned geodesic dome, a parking garage, and the legendary Studio P4 orchestral recording hall at the broadcast complex of the former GDR. Frahm also plays on two songs. Title track “Hero Brother” sweeps and slides with a driving Balkan fiddle flavour, replete with subtle dynamic shifts and accented by Neufeld's boot stomping the floor like a massive timpani drum. “You Are The Field” is pastoral and windswept, marked by see-sawing arpeggiation and overtones excited by the natural reverberation of an empty hall. “Wrong Thought”, “Right Thought” and “Sprinter Fire” offer further extrapolations from the intersection of folk/fiddle tropes, modern/Minimalist composition, and artpunk grit. “Breathing Black Ground” is appropriately grounded in a majestic drone courtesy of Frahm's harmonium playing, while “Forcelessness” is punctuated by solemn piano accents again from Frahm, resulting in two of the album's darkest and most cinematic pieces. The record as a whole unfolds as a cohesive, transporting and engagingly idiosyncratic soundtrack of solo violin music, teeming with diverse timbres, techniques and ambience. Sarah has presented her solo music at BAM (Brooklyn), the WSO New Music Festival (Winnipeg) and Wavelength Festival (Toronto), of which Exclaim magazine wrote: “the highlight of the night was most certainly Sarah Neufeld, whose compositions range from Reichian to folksy without skipping a beat; she uses violin squeals, growls, scrapes and slides to express varying emotions and stomps the stage beneath her for percussion.” Constellation is delighted to be releasing this debut album of Sarah Neufeld's recorded solo work.

CATALOG #: JAG242 RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 20, 2013 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: POP KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK, DALLAS, LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO, PORTLAND, SEATTLE, MIAMI VINYL NOT RETURNABLE

DIANA are an enigmatic foursome from Toronto, where they must be putting something in the water with the number of great bands hailing from there. Consisting of Joseph Shabason, Kieran and singer Carmen Elle, with Paul Mathew recently joining the live line up, Shabason and Adams met while studying jazz at music college where they played extensively together. Having lent their skills (saxophone and drums, respectively) to many bands, including Bonjay, The Hidden Cameras and Shabason's recent contributions to Destroyer's excellent Kaputt, it was a leap of faith to make their own full-length. But the time had come. After a songwriting sabbatical in the Canadian countryside, Shabason and Adams went into the studio with engineer and co-producer Roger Leavens. They asked Toronto musician and vocalist Carmen Elle to sing on a track, as both Kieran and Joseph knew her from her work with other bands such as the much feted but short-lived Spiral Beach, all of whose members have since gone on to play in various successful Canadian bands from Austra to Doldrums. The pair thought her voice might add something special, this turned out to be a huge understatement. Even though Shabason and Adams wrote the songs, the lyrics and melodies belonged to Elle the moment they escaped her mouth, each nuance of phrasing and melody deepening the sentiments. With this last dazzling piece of the puzzle in place, DIANA was born. Right from the first note we’re reeled into DIANA’s intimate world, with the dense, ambient swell that begins album opener ‘Foreign Installation’. A heady mix of drums, electric guitar and lush production, all sewn together and lifted by Carmen’s soothing vocal, their sound is addictive from the off. The pace is picked up with ‘That Feeling’, the detached refrain "We were blind to all the ways we sat and watched it fade away…" echoing through a mist of synths layered over insistent drums and bass. It is future music with an undeniable pop sensibility, though never overwhelming, the glossy yet sparse production always leaving just enough room for the imagination. Album highlight ‘Perpetual Surrender’ boasts an impressive travelling bassline, with Carmen’s gorgeous vocal repeating “I need saving from myself ” over blown beats and perhaps the year’s best indie sax solo, all coming together to create well over four minutes of eerie, blissed-out ambience. Though there are glances to music past and kinship with music present, there is a progressive and contemporary feel to the record. DIANA comparisons traverse eras and genres; from the soft-focus soft rock and pop of Roxy Music to the dreamy production of jj and Chromatics, topped off with the Balearic disco swirl of Studio. While referencing so many, Carmen’s unique vocal brings them their own voice. For DIANA, the point is to push things forward, summed up with the embryonic bliss of instrumental closer ‘Curtains’, a startling piece of atmospheric production that stays with you long after the last sound has echoed into the ether.

Permanent Signal: according to Wikipedia, “a condition in which a phone line is off-hook without connection for an extended period of time.” It’s a term that Mauro Remiddi returned to repeatedly when reflecting on the time between last year’s release of Strange Weekend, the multi-instrumentalist’s debut full-length as Porcelain Raft, and this, its proper follow-up. “In a way, growing up in Italy, then living for 12 years in London, and now two and a half years in New York, made me realize that I have some dear friends I rarely see,” explains Remiddi. “I was touring almost non-stop for eight months and I started having these imaginary conversations in my head with people I wanted to communicate with, but for one reason or another it couldn’t happen. This is where the album title came from: the idea of a signal that says the line is off." Remiddi began working on Permanent Signal at the end of 2012, two months after returning from tour. It became a period of readjustment in which he was beginning to enjoy everyday comforts and reconnecting with friends, yet the thoughts of those unrealized conversations during his recent travels were still fresh in his mind. Inspired by this surreal moment of transition, where the reality of finally being home was still overshadowed by lingering feelings of detachment, he sold almost all of the instruments used for Strange Weekend in order to “start with a new color palette." This is immediately apparent in Permanent Signal’s opener, "Think Of The Ocean". The dense, basementrecorded haze of his last full-length has been traded for a spacious melancholy, where cello, piano and drums gently spiral atop the faint pulsing tone, mirroring the album’s title. While layers of synths and electronics still play a role, the new record is far more organic than Porcelain Raft’s previous releases. According to Remiddi, this was an intentional move: “I wanted to record in the studio just to capture the guitars and drums properly, and to have some real input from musicians I respected and loved to hang with." Remiddi enlisted support from Yuck’s Jonny Rogoff on drums, Antlers' bassist Darby Cicci (who also contributed double vocals and trumpet, and engineered the sessions in his Brooklyn studio), and cellist Gaspar Claus (frequent collaborator with Sufjan Stevens and Bryce Dessner of The National). Porcelain Raft’s once gauzy pop has now turned as vivid as a waking dream. During “Minor Pleasure,” Remiddi finds catharsis amidst the processed drone of organ and piano, echoing the gospel-dosed psychedelia of Spiritualized, and concedes in his otherworldly tenor that “there’s nothing hidden in what we see, sometimes you just have to let it in”. Meanwhile, the radiant lull of “Night Birds” reaches cosmic bliss, with a poignant sense of nostalgia brought about by the song’s crystalline guitars and synthesizers. There are tracks like “Cluster” and the haunting, Lennon-esque “I Lost Connection”, which deal directly with lives either on hold or in transition -- all universal themes of the human condition that allow the listener to fill in their own personal experiences with a permanent signal.

Key Information / Selling Points: Hometown / Key Markets: • Phoenix/Tempe, LA, NY, Memphis Press: • Previous coverage on Pitchfork, Two NME print features including, “Top 10 Bands to See @ SXSW,” The Fly UK print feature, Spin, Noisey

Destruction Unit are an American band formed in the Sonoran desert of Arizona. Dug up from the sonic landfills of the cosmos, these radical desert dwellers have built a reputation for both mesmerizing and terrorizing crowds with their sheer power and intensity. Formed by Ryan Rousseau, D. Unit was initially a synthheavy three piece whose other members were Jay Reatard and Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds); likewise Rousseau was also in the Reatards before Jay went solo. Born out of the nucleus of the Memphis Goner Records scene and transplanted into Tempe, AZ, Rousseau has grown the band in the last few years into a full sonic assault, which now includes three guitar players (himself, Nick Nappa & Jesco Aurelius), his brother Rusty Rousseau on bass, and a 19 year-old classically trained drummer, Andrew Flores. This line-up has released several cassettes on their own label Ascetic House, a small run LP, Void on Jolly Dream and most recently a limited edition 7" on Suicide Squeeze. Deep Trip is their first proper studio album, produced by Ben Greenberg of The Men, Hubble, and Pygmy Shrews at Vacation Island in NY. It’s the first long player which truly captures their burning spirits. Morphine boogie for the 21st century noise addict. A spiritual odyssey of sadomasochistic self-loathing with songs about love and freedom. Selling drugs to make music to sell drugs to; aggressive psychedelic sprawl at its finest. The future of Rock and Roll burning through three twin reverbs and a pound of grass. Press Quotes: “Skull-crushing repetition, menacing walls of nuanced guitar noise, feedback magick wah’d from hell to the sky, a sprawling kraut backbone, evil melodies.” – Pitchfork

RELEASE BIO "2012 was a powerful year for me. I released my second LP; I played nearly 180 shows in 360 days; I made the move back home from Brooklyn, NY to Detroit, MI; a six-year relationship of mine came to an end and I made it 30 years on the planet." The music of Zach Saginaw, aka Shigeto, has always been deeply rooted in his personal history. His debut EPs Semi-Circle and What We Held Onto explored his grandmother’s experience from a US internment camp through ambient, beat driven tracks, nostalgic melodies and spliced vocal samples, including his grandmother’s vocals. His debut album Full Circle became a culmination of these EPs and further refinement of obsessive field recording and meticulous percussion, creating lush, sumptuous instrumental hip-hop. 2012’s sophomore album Lineage was a musical journey through his heritage combined with the sounds of jazz, hiphop, funk and folk. The cover of his great grandfather's house in Hiroshima even adorned the Lineage artwork. For all that Saginaw reveres his connections to his past, however, his new album seems very much about the idea of living in the moment. The signs of this idea are all over No Better Time Than Now — from the obvious connotations of the album title, through song titles that seem harbingers of change and immediacy ("First Saturn Return," "Soul Searching") to the music itself. It's an album that reflects a pivotal year in the life of its creator. This sense of the restless vigor that change can bring is palpable throughout Better Time Than Now . Fans of Shigeto's previous work will find all the hallmarks of his sound here — the warm, inviting washes of liquid synth sounds, the intricate production, the jazz-influenced arrangements. Now, however, they're imbued with a subtle energy — "Detroit Part 1," for instance, features a surprisingly pounding hip hop beat, while "Ringleader" is propelled by an insistent hi-hat pattern that sits slightly ahead of the beat, giving the track a driving mood that belies its tempo. Even the quieter tracks retain a certain sense of urgency — the aforementioned "Soul Searching," for instance, is a track that sounds just as reflective as its name might suggest, but it's kept from drifting too far into introspection by a powerful, echo-laden beat. The title track starts out in a similarly pensive vein, but builds slowly into a storm of fuzzy synth sounds and clattering drums. Even the penultimate "Silver Lining," a quietly beautiful mixture of Shigeto’s evocative vocals and tinkling electric piano, features one of the punchier kickdrum sounds you'll ever hear.

No

Despite its origins in change and unrest, No Better Time Than Now is ultimately a positive work: "The last year was definitely a significant turning point in my life both musically and personally," Saginaw says, "but life has its way of working things out in the strangest of ways. I spent most of the year traveling and that gave me a lot of time to think. I got to know myself a lot better and that helped me be more honest with myself… that helped me write more honest music and gave me inspiration and excitement for the future." This sense of internal reflection and confidence imbues every moment of this record. As Saginaw says, "I feel when things change so much so fast, you are forced to look at what is right in front of you… [to] look at what's happening in the moment, [which] sometimes helps you embrace that moment. These songs are that for me. Don't sleep on a feeling. If it feels right it is. We say life is 'short,' but [we] know it feels 'long,' so when you have a chance to be honest with yourself, take it — there is no better time than now." No better time, indeed.

Numero group Rokk: I Want To Live High

Catalog Number: Jr01o Artist: Rokk Title: I Want To Live High Release Date:8 /20/13 Available formats: lp Genre: Funk UPC: 825764601016 Vinyl is not returnable

A debut album that never was, Rokk’s I Want To Live High is that rare misshapen pearl clenched tightly between the shells of a music industry shucked long ago. Too soulful for its disco-era release date, the sextet’s 1976 Tollieissued 45 “Patience” (as featured in Eccentric Soul: Omnibus) tracked well in Rokk’s hometown of Los Angeles, but was withdrawn before patience ran out with the spring rains of 1977. Tracked simultaneously was this entire shelved album full of Rokk’s mid-tempo grooves, flute-lead funk, sultry female backing vocals, slap bass, chorus-drenched guitars, and lyrics about getting baked and eating baked apple pie. Jazzy, with plentiful slices of Broadway, Innervisions, and Rokk’s own stoned brand of horn-rock, had I Want To Live High ever gotten so high as actual record store shelves circa late 1977, it would’ve surely sobered up to the commercial onslaught of saturday night disco juggernauts and the pummeling forces of earth, wind, and fire.
