From the dawn of doo-wop to the death of disco, the Notations saw—and sang—it all. Persisting through changing trends and technologies, on major labels and minor ones, produced by both Syl Johnson and Curtis Mayfield, nothing could stop the Notations from representing Chicago’s Southside for decades. ABOUT THIS RECORD Stone Jack Jones is a survivor. On two separate occasions the rare and mysterious blood condition that courses through his steely West Virginian veins almost killed him. Doctors couldn't fully explain or treat his malady, but Jack pulled through, even after receiving last rites on one occasion. Spending a little time at Death's door gave him unique perspective on life. While recovering from one of his near death experiences he deeply pondered the necessity of death, the torturous pain that comes with the death of someone you love, and eventually arrived at the simultaneously comforting and alarming conclusion that he was both alive and dead at the same time. In 2014 Jack released Ancestor, an album which The Quietus called “…breathtakingly insightful and poetic…”, and SPIN called "…undeniably compelling…”. As a tribute to his father, Ancestor was a remembrance of mountain string bands, with many of the songs worked out as an acoustic three-piece sitting together in a bluegrass circle. For his new album Love & Torture he took a different approach, working out the foundations for most of the songs in the studio with producer Roger Moutenot. Rather than recording everything over of a few days or weeks in the studio, the two met up sporadically over the course of many months, giving the songs plenty of time to gestate and evolve in stride with Jack's life. When it felt right, they'd invite long-time collaborators including Ryan Norris, Scott Martin, and Kyle Hamlett into the studio to improvise and explore where each song would go next. Having worked and created with the same guys for several years, their trust and intimacy let them extract moments of brilliance from the ether. The album opens with the woozy groove of "Shine" (one of two songs on the album featuring vocals by Patty Griffin), which Jack describes as "a contemplation of what heaven might be like." The following song "Thrill Thrill" explores the helplessness he felt in the clutches of the blood disease that nearly killed him. Lambchop's Kurt Wagner contributes some serious low-end to the song "Circumstance". As Jack recalls, "I asked Kurt if he thought he could sing lower than me and he gave me a wily smile with a deep long ooooh yeah, took a sip of whiskey and put it in the basement." The mood lightens a bit on the drinking song "Russia" on which Jack's wife Hollis chants verses from Russian poet Alexander Blok, while Ben Smythe contributes a frenetic and deranged penny whistle to the party. The album concludes with the joyful acceptance and appreciation of "Amen", another song about Jack's celebration of life. As dark as his creative output can seem at times, it's heavily infused with Jack's undeniable light and his patient will to "...knock a hole in the sky. Seek light in the dark. Have secrets and make the air vibrate and shake reality so she shows her many faces." Like a collection of swirling and inviting mantras Love & Torture is a sonic dialog that pulses with the all of the grace and bliss that has touched Jack's incredible life.

SOFT CONNECTIONS - LP/CD • Hometown: Orange County, CA • Formerly Catwalk, Debut Album as Nic Hessler • National college and specialty radio campaign via AAM In 2005, at the age of 14, Nic Hessler created the alias “Catwalk” to write, record and perform his music. Armed with Wipers and Roy Orbison records, an 8-track recorder and a garage, Nic set out to make Catwalk the next great guitar-oriented California band like many teenagers before him. Two tiny run 7” singles on the now defunct Yay! imprint soon appeared, making the rounds through independent record stores and mail order distributors. This led to the 18-year-old Nic to sign to the also new and young label, Captured Tracks. Two C/T 7” releases in 2010 and 2011 followed, leading up to a full-fledged Catwalk LP and tour in 2011. Press reaction was swift and, as interest was grew, Nic garnered support in his hometown of Orange County, CA to assemble a tour line-up for the LP. However, none of that would ever happen.

Around this time, Nic was struck with an ailment that kept him sidelined for quite sometime: Guillain-Barré Syndrome. No walk in the park, GBS prevented Nic from playing guitar, leaving him partially paralyzed for the bulk of this lost period. While this was obviously detrimental for Nic and Catwalk, strangely, it may have helped the musician Nic Hessler’s career. Now ditching the moniker of a hypothetical band, Nic re-emerges in 2015, healthy and reinvigorated, with a more fully-formed and ambitious sound: the sound of Soft Connections, his debut LP years in the making, though he’s now just 23. Soft Connections bridges the songwriting influences of the vintage American powerpop of Emmit Rhodes and Alex Chilton, along with UK giants like The Kinks and XTC. Tracks like “Hearts, Repeating” and “I Feel Again”—two classic singles in the radio sense of the word—show the maturity in craftsmanship Nic’s been honing these past four years. The making of Soft Connections was a lengthy process that took place during a crucial period of musical growth and self-exploration. It’s an optimistic and introspective record about being in-and-out of feeling — on the brink of a personal breakthrough, yet still seeking direction, purpose, truth and permanence. Anchored by the Catwalk favorite “(Please) Don’t Break Me” — a song that, at one point, could very well have launched Nic into “indie celebdom” — this record is now a send-off to Nic’s lost time; he’s moved forward, sounding better than ever and ready to soundtrack your long road trip or failed crush. This will be the first record in what we all hope to be a lengthy string of great albums.

Elizabeth Eaton Converse grew up in Laconia, New Hampshire in 1924. Described as a polymath, she attended Mt. Holyoke College, but by 1944 she decided to leave college and, in 1949, she made her way to New York City. Over the course of the next decade, in addition to acquiring her new moniker, “Connie” wrote and recorded songs that captured the hearts of those close to her. Some were recorded by the artist in her Greenwich Village apartment, others by friends enamored of the music. These included animator Gene Deitch and his colleague Bill Bernal, who helped coordinate an appearance on the CBS Morning Show with Walter Cronkite.

Despite these efforts, Connie’s music never reached an audience wider than, as she once put it, “dozens of people all over the world.” In 1961 Connie tired of New York and left for Ann Arbor. She became increasingly despondent in the 1970’s, and, finally, in 1974, Connie wrote a series of goodbye notes to friends and family, packed up her Volkswagen and disappeared. She has not been seen or heard from since. At first listen, Connie’s music seems to keep close company with the female folk artists who were her contemporaries. The knack for plaintive storytelling shares much with Peggy Seeger and Susan Reed, but Connie’s music stands out from that of the American folk revival of the 1950’s. Her fluid and disarmingly intelligent poetry is often filled with the kind of contradictions that reflects an urban perspective. She is at once a maverick and a romantic, intellectual and spiritual, a staunch independent and a tender, pining lover. How Sad, How Lovely captures the broad spectrum of Connie’s music.

BIO Inventions are the collaborative sum of longtime friends Matthew Cooper of Eluvium, and Mark T. Smith of Explosions In The Sky. Their 2014 eponymous debut album introduced an ambition to create music that was both challenging and comforting. Their new album, Maze of Woods, opens with a vocal sample declaring, "I wanted to do something that I don't know how to do." Using this as a mission statement, Inventions have crafted a complex and exuberant album from an array of instruments, samples, found sounds, beats, chants, and raw bursts of noise, with a much greater emphasis on strong vocal accompaniment in every song. Two albums released in the span of 10 months speaks to the drive that these two have felt since they started playing together. Much like on the first record, they again mixed the album in a house on the Oregon coastline, with final mixing and production all done by Smith and Cooper. Inventions have stated that much of the inspiration for Maze of Woods comes from the closing paragraph of Denis Johnson's novella Train Dreams. In that paragraph, Johnson describes the nonverbal howl of a feral wolf boy, a pre-language that is yearning and instinctual; a statement of wordless distress and love. Maze of Woods is the product of two masters of their craft getting lost in the wilderness, "doing something that they don't know how to do," and emerging with something wholly unexpected and beguilingly beautiful.
