Moon Duo began work on their latest album during a period in which they faced a curious new reality. Freed from deadlines and expectations, and suddenly off the road for a stretch, Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada found themselves each experiencing strange shifts in their perceptions of reality. Like the beginning of an acid trip, or the edge of dusk, when shadows converge mysteriously with light, life began to slip into a surreal dream, and then back, suddenly, without warning. Unstable in these strange shadows and light, the band turned to music to tether themselves to a kind of working sanity. Shadow of the Sun is the result of a few months of wrangling with this new unsettling way of being. Working both in a dark basement in Portland, and above ground in sunny San Francisco, these new sounds and songs veered dramatically from groove to groove, revealing sonic textures the duo had not previously explored. The song “Night Beat,” with its woozy dance rhythm, is an attempt at finding joy and acceptance on this new, shifting ground, while “Wilding” plays off the familiar Moon Duo sound, taking refuge in a repetitive, grounding riff-scape. Elsewhere the band gives itself entirely up to the trip, cruising along on the fuzzed rhythms of “Slow Down Low” and “Free the Skull,” crashing into the clenched-teeth herky-jerk of “Zero,” and floating down, down, down, on the narcotic mist of “In a Cloud.” To further coat the album in a fog of stoned confusion, the duo decamped to Berlin to mix with Finnish beat-meister Jonas Verwijnen of Kaiku Studios. There they managed to entirely reverse the clarity of the album, increasing the overall focus, and creating an unorthodox argument for sanity through extreme negation of proper technique and conventionality. The result, at the end of the trip, is the album Shadow of the Sun.

‘Over the years there has been a lot of talk about the so-called ‘Dunedin sound’. Dunedin’s Sneaky Feelings were a band whose ambitions and interests went much wider than any generic ‘sound’; they would even come to be regarded as something of an anomaly on Flying Nun, home to the Dunedin sound. And yet their first album seemed to epitomise that sound, whatever it was. One of the first long-players released on the fledgling label, Send You was emblematic. The early Flying Nun bands could be divided into two kinds: those like The Clean, who accepted their limitations and made the most of them, and others, like Sneaky Feelings whose ambitions outstripped their limited recording budgets. Consequently their later records sometimes sounded a few thousand dollars short of the masterpieces they might have been.

PALMBOMEN II PALMBOMEN II Kai Hugo works in two guises. Palmbomen is a group-oriented collaboration suited for live dynamics and instrumentation, while Palmbomen II is geared toward solitary production with an austere toolset: classic sequencers, time-tested drum machines and their contemporary counterparts. Hugo’s foray as Palmbomen II makes its debut on Beats In Space Records with the eponymous full-length Palmbomen II. Guided by voices hardwired into machines of house productions past, Hugo found his footing on the road most travelled by pioneering dance producers by following a spontaneous ethos to create Palmbomen II. The live ideology applied to Palmbomen’s 2013 album Night Flight Europa guides this path, yet the true vehicle of Palmbomen II is optimized with a single driver-seat. Recorded during a summer lockdown in his mother’s attic in their hometown of Breda, The Netherlands, Hugo monastically set forth making Palmbomen II with tools of a seemingly distant trade: machines - to program and to play - and tape - to record the results. By reversing the perceived potential in hardware versus software production, Hugo returned to the creative core sometimes blinded by too much screen glow: make good music and the rest will follow. “Program the rhythms, arrange the harmonies, play these together, and record to tape. That’s it,” says Hugo. By virtue of Hugo’s reductive approach, Palmbomen II is flagrant with moments that fall outside an “ideal” mix. The album is imbued with a literal human touch. One hears Hugo riding Oberheim DX faders in real time, improvising Arp 2600 patches at the turn of a track, and dripping sweat across Roland TR-909 keys. Beyond the process of Palmbomen II, the album maintains to two metaphysical atmospheres: his mother’s attic and The X-Files. The attic’s liminality inspired a routine practice of tracking four songs a day for a solid week throughout different parts of the summer. A solitary binge of sorts, the fourteen tracks of the album represent only a portion of the escapist trove Hugo yielded. Simultaneously, Hugo’s binge-watching of the 90s / early aughts scifi television show colored characteristics in his music. Set in Vancouver, The X-Files’ early seasons are felt in the wave-crashing, deep forest melodies of “Cindy Savalas” and “John Lee Roche”, while the languid rhythms of “Carina Sayles” mirrors the human condition as morphed by the show’s extraterrestrial encounters. Palmbomen II possesses the qualities of an artist slowly slipping from one reality to the next, yet it welcomes listeners to experience this transcendence in tandem. By toeing the primal lines drawn in early electronic production, the base - and bass - from which Hugo explores the fringe remains musically bright and in sight. Recently relocated to Los Angeles to cruise Shaky Town’s alien lanes, Hugo plans to bring his Palmbomen II project to the live stage with an extensive crew of hardware compatriots. Palmbomen II will be available on March 3, 2015 on double LP, CD, and digital formats via Beats in Space Records. Three Blind Mice CD / LP FNCT018 // RELEASE DATE: March 03, 2015 Of the four bands represented on the Dunedin Double EP, the early 80’s Flying Nun release that introduced that city’s fledging indie sound to the wider world The Stones are probably the least remembered and least appreciated.

The Stones were birthed by singer/guitarist Wayne Elsey’s decision to quit ‘Bored Games’ to ‘start a band that sounded like The Clean. Their début came on the 25th April 1981 at an Otago University a gig headlined by Bored Games (Shayne Carter) and new comers The Chills and Verlaine’s (a line up which in retrospect, would make any Flying Nun/low fi pop fan drool). Elsey’s vision for a band that sounds like The Clean didn’t really come to fruition. The Stones were to bright to not to create their own sound one wrapped in braggadocio and swagger. Fast, aggressive guitars, driving rhythm section with a knack for fluid pop structures. Charismatic and smart The Stones had the ability to sound completely empathetic and threatening all at once. As all good things, The Stones were not to last, releasing one full length ‘Another Disc Another Dollar’ before breaking up two years in. The band were part of the wave of Dunedin bands popular around the country and mystery to the middle. The band site the $38 dollars earned opening for Tall Dwarfs a career highlight.

NO AGE Weirdo Rippers By now the two young heavyweights from the LA Skate / Art / Punk underworld, No Age, are a well-known and established part of the indie pantheon. But back in 2007 Dean Spunt and Randy Randall were just building quite a bit of noise in the wake of the demise of their previous band Wives.
Release date: 03/03/15 Format: LP File Under: Rock
Territory Restrictions: Only available to North America, South America
After working out their sound in the LA scene revolving around the now fabled venue The Smell (pictured on the cover of Weirdo Rippers) they decided to release five ltd. vinyl only releases on a variety of DIY indie labels across the globe on the same day (namely UTR, Deleted Art, Teardrops, Youth Attack, and Dean’s own PPM label). Designed by Brian Roettinger, Randall and Spunt, the back of each record's sleeve was a different color, and had one of the letters that, when you collected all of them, would join to spell "No Age." Their debut LP release for FatCat, ‘Weirdo Rippers’, was a collection of recorded highlights taken from the aforementioned releases. At the time it was readily available on CD and has since found a home digitally but it’s not found its way back to the vinyl format that first gave many of these tracks life. Now we’re presenting the first domestically available version of ‘Weirdo Rippers’ pressed to vinyl; an utterly essential piece of No Age’s past.

Praise for No Age’s Weirdo Rippers “Despite an overload of music these days, if often feels like there are fewer essential listens. At the end of Weirdo Rippers, you're left with a rare sense of having discovered something new.” 8.0/10 - Pitchfork “Weirdo Rippers created an entire world within an album....so obviously a Los Angeles record. From the ambient guitar scratch on “Loosen This Job” to the plaintive field recording of waves on “Every Artist Needs a Tragedy” to the defiant, almost snotty “Boy Void,” which sounded like it was recorded from inside a crusty cardboard box, the Los Angeles that No Age were writing was all warehouses, skating at sunset and unpretentious unity.”- Stereogum Shimmering shoegaze pop and glowering punk collide and burst into flames on this delightfully rude debut. Surging waves of frayed yet beautiful electronica give way to urgent rants, with voices buried in the mix like distant cries for help. - SPIN

Fluoride is an experimental project from NYC consisting of Dustin Payseur (Beach Fossils) and Rene Nuñez (Herzog Rising). After playing together in the noise-punk band Divorce Money, the two banded together in 2012. The motivation was to combine the harsh cacophony of industrial music with the larger textures of contemporary production styles. Their debut album Material is thematically uncompromising, featuring imperative lyrics and harsh undertones. The collaboration utilizes Dustin’s songwriting, creating the pounding rhythms and blown-out electronic soundscapes which they both share vocal duties over.

For a release so diverse in its influences, Almost is a near impossibly cohesive introduction to emerging artist Null. Through melancholic, fragile compositions the Melbourne, Australia-based producer refocuses our attention on the mid 90s catch-all “Electronica” through contemporary genres ranging from Jersey House to Footwork to Trap. Frequently derided, Electronica was posited as a homogenizing term for a rapidly proliferating host of electronic genres to the North American market, in much the same way that EDM exists today. Null explores a space in which he condenses the diversity of that “genre” – essentially attempting to create work that can wear the Electronica badge earnestly. On Almost, Null recalls electronic music's relatively young history in wide-eyed reverence, never allowing irony or cynicism to interrupt his worship. He achieves this by wearing his heart on his sleeve: dense, saturated synthesizer lines evoking CJ Bolland or Josh Wink weave into lush, euphoric textures reminiscent of Orbital and Underworld. Massive, dusty breakbeats flirt with classic drum machines and found, ambient sound recalling DJs Krush and Shadow. Footwork and jungle unabashedly embrace uplifting trance and ambiguous vocal cuts harking back to the feminine end of early '00s UK Garage. Around these constantly shifting contrasts Null structures yearning melodies into dramatic, sometimes discordant narratives. Available as limited edition EP pressed on ‘ultraclear’ vinyl, the stunning techno-organic design of design firm Oval-X (How To Dress Well, Digitalism, CFCF) is presented in a heavy card sleeve with gloss finish and a metal “tamper-proof” security sticker. With Almost serving as an introduction to Null’s considerable talent, he will expand his horizons further with a full album in late 2015.

Red Sea is a group raised in the sugar-coated bubble heartlands of Northern Metropolitan Atlanta. After an extended period of musical experimentation with other various groups and by virtue of agreeing aesthetic values, social and geographic proximity, the current members, Kyle, Mick, Patrick and Stephen coalesced circa 2009. As of late, their influences are said to have stemmed from tropicalia, funk, classical and gamelan music. Red Sea’s latest EP, In The Salon, showcases its taste through a bricolage of pop tracks, all of which were recorded live with electric guitars, synthesizers, bass and drums. The boys sing words that humor auto-suggestive techniques over synthi-mutant ballads & fragmented rhythms which emulate the digitally contrived worlds of sound that they create.

Brought together by their elementary school band, Ben Jackson and Alex Bailey ended up swapping their trombones for guitar. After playing together throughout high school, the two parted ways when Alex went to study in San Francisco and Ben stayed in their native Atlanta, befriending vocalist Elaine Edenfield and drummer Doug Bleichner along the way. The adolescent bandmates were later reunited at a house party. Warehouse is the result. Now joined by bassist Josh Hughes, of Stevie Dinner, the five-piece band finds its inspirations in Brazil’s Bossa Nova and Tropicalia movements. Warehouse even received a shout-out from Bradford Cox, of Deerhunter and Atlas Sound, in his “Best of 2013” list for Pitchfork. Their debut album Tesseract is a slight departure from some of their earlier new wave material, and highlights more classic rock elements, matched by Elaine’s guttural vocals. • UNITS PER SET: 1X Cassette • RETURNABLE?: No • BOX LOT FOR TAPE: 100 • PRESSING QTY FOR TAPE: 250 • EXPORT RESTRICTIONS: World
