GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR ‘Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress’ CD / 180gLP / DL

RELEASE DATE: 31 MARCH 2015

“If Godspeed around the turn of the millennium felt like a band of the moment, now, in a time of rapid cultural turnover and bite-sized music consumption, they feel out of step in a very necessary way.” – PITCHFORK “This Montreal collective still sound like nothing else…The Godspeed ethos of wordlessly eliciting universal truths remains as devastatingly effective as ever.” – THE GUARDIAN

Godspeed You! Black Emperor (GYBE) returns with its first single LP-length release since the group's earliest days in 1997-99. ‘Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress’ clocks in at a succinct 40 minutes and is arguably the most focused and bestsounding recording of the band’s career. Working with sound engineer Greg Norman (Electrical Audio) at studios in North Carolina and Montréal, GYBE slowly and steadily put the new album together through late 2013 and 2014, emerging with a mighty slab of superlative sonics, shot through with all the band’s inimitable signposts and touchstones: huge unison riffage, savage noise/drone, oscillating overtones, guitar vs. string counterpoint, inexorable crescendos and scorchedearth transitions. Following Godspeed’s return from a long hiatus at the end of 2010 to begin playing live shows again, and with the hugely acclaimed ‘Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! release in 2012 marking their first new release in a decade, the group continued to perform regularly on their own headlining tours (and as headliners at many leading festivals), often including a new multi-movement piece in concert over the past couple of years. Known to fans and through live show recordings by the sobriquet “Behemoth”, GYBE has gradually distilled this new work down to a fastidious and uncompromising essence in the studio, with the swing-time swagger of the opening unison riff in “Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’” giving way to increasing microtonal divergences and an exhilarating immersion in the harmonic power of massed amplified instruments, before collapsing into some of the most visceral and unalloyed noise/drone the band has yet committed to tape on “Lambs’ Breath” and “Asunder, Sweet”. The album closes with “Piss Crowns Are Trebled”, a 14-minute piece of vintage Godspeed, where ascending and descending guitar and violin melodies intertwine over gut-rattling distorted bass in 3/4 time, segueing into a pummeling four-on-the-floor series of sparkling, soaring crescendos. ‘Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress’ finds Godspeed in top form; a sterling celebration of the band’s awesome dialectic, where composition, emotion and ‘note-choice’ is inextricable from an exacting focus on tone, timbre, resonance and the sheer materiality of sound. The album is available on 180 gram vinyl in a gatefold jacket with printed inner dust sleeve and insert poster; on CD in a 100% recycled custom paperboard jacket; and on all manner of formats in our fractured digital marketplace. Thanks for listening.

THE SOFT MOON DEEPER LP/CD

• Touring April through end of 2015 • Third Album announced in December • New single “Black” named Best New Track by Pitchfork Luis Vasquez never intended for The Soft Moon to reach the public’s ears; for him, music has always been about self-actualization rather than self-aggrandizement. Nevertheless, the bleak, hushed sounds he created years ago in his small Oakland apartment bubbled to the surface and 2010 saw his debut LP, The Soft Moon, released on Captured Tracks rise to critical acclaim. Pitchfork’s 8.1 review stated that Vasquez made “oblivion seems like an enticing prospect” and, indeed, listeners were immediately drawn into his murky musical wasteland, swathed in the moody atmospheres of jagged dark wave and wayfaring postpunk. For them, and for Vasquez, there was no turning back. The Total Decay EP and Zeros emerged soon after, and now Vasquez returns with The Soft Moon’s most introspective and focused album to date: Deeper. Following live line-up changes and a lull in the The Soft Moon’s constant touring schedule, the year 2013 found Luis Vasquez lost in the void. Though he fatalistically stated that 2012’s Zeros would be the last album where he was the sole songwriter, Vasquez realized that The Soft Moon has always been one man’s vision.

Thus, in July of 2013, Vasquez decamped from Oakland, CA to Venice, Italy, unsure of where The Soft Moon would land. While Zeros was written and recorded between long days on the road, Deeper was begat from an almost primal urge to recoil from the world and experience total solitude. Stepping back and letting inspiration fall where it may, Vasquez only had one goal in mind for his third album: to pen his most emotional record yet. Between frequent visits to Berlin, Vasquez retreated to Venice’s Hate Studios, located in the mountains near electronic guru and spiritual anchor Giorgio Moroder’s hometown. At Hate, he worked for almost a year with producer Maurizio Baggio to piece together Deeper, only completing the album in August 2014. While maintaining the stark sonic formula so indicative of The Soft Moon’s music -- that bass that reeks of chorus, those unrelenting, mechanized beats, that wailing synthesizer and those eerily, angular guitar lines that worm into your ears and never leave -- Baggio also worked to refine the album’s gothic palette, leaving Vasquez to concentrate more intensely on songwriting and singing.

The voice of The Soft Moon has never been more clear and honest than it is on this record. With eerie, immersive tracks like the dogged “Far” and slow, beautifully melancholic “Wasting” (the first track written for Deeper), the album is a penetrating portrait of Vasquez as he wrestles thoughts of suicide, vulnerability and what it means to heal. Deeper may have delivered Vasquez back to the waking world, but it willingly drags us further into The Soft Moon’s dark, euphonic universe once more.

Primrose Green begins near where All Kinds of You, his last record, leaves off but quickly pushes far afield. The title sounds pastoral and quaint, but the titular green has dark hallucinogenic qualities, as does much of the LP. The band is a mixture of new and old Chicago talent, blending both jaded veterans of the postrock and jazz mini-circuits together with a few eager, open-eared youths. Ryley didn’t have much time to write this LP, so some of it he didn’t. Bits of lyrics were improvised into full-blown songs in the studio, more often than not on the fly. The title track “Primrose Green” was nearly discarded after its incarnation on a bleak St. Patrick’s Day spent in Oxford, Mississippi. “Primrose Green” is a colloquial term for a cocktail of whiskey and morning glory seeds that has a murky, dreamy, absinthian quality when imbibed, and a spirit-crushing aftereffect the morning after. “Summer Dress” is liftoff: seizing the mantle from Tim Buckley’s Starsailor and perfecting its frantic jazz-induced fits. “Griffiths Bucks Blues” is named for a local artist and eccentric botanist in Ryley’s hometown of Rockford, Illionois who has likely had few other songs named for him. “Love Can Be Cruel” spends almost two minutes “out” before becoming the song it was originally intended to be. Drummer Frank Rosaly pushes the song further and further until it borders on a cathartic meltdown to close out Side A. Side B sets off with a shot of Americana, “On The Banks Of The Old Kishwaukee”. It’s an ode to the immersion baptisms Ryley’s witnessed while walking along the banks. Unlike the idyllic memories of christenings under the weeping willows, the river was brown and polluted, the participants dirty and tired and disinterested. “Sweet Satisfaction” presents some of Ryley’s most intricate and ecstatic fingerpicking. It’s hard not to recall John Martyn’s early 1970s work, though Ben Boye’s piano work is particularly revelatory here. “All Kinds Of You” is the oldest song included here. The title should seem familiar… it was written after his first LP, All Kinds of You, was finished, but the name seemed to fit that collection of songs better than anything else. No one knows what the future holds for young Ryley Walker. Hardship and setbacks and uncertainty only seem to spur him on creatively. If the world catches on, the Ryley that follows up this album may be a different sort of person, one who knows the taste of better liquor and comfortable bedding and might not be nearly as driven. Here, with Primrose Green, we risk limiting his access to personal disaster by flirting with success.

Ryley Walker is the reincarnation of the True American Guitar Player. That’s as much a testament to his roving, rambling ways as to the fact that his Guild D-35 guitar has endured a few stints in the pawnshop.

Since 2010, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt (Iceage, Vår) has used the Marching Church moniker to a variety of musical ends, both live and recorded. However, the project as it exists on This World Is Not Enough wasn’t born until November 2013. With a live performance looming and no real idea what the set would be, Rønnenfelt found a new vision for the band while daydreaming at a gig at the venue where Marching Church was set to perform. “What I pictured was me in a comfortable armchair, adorned in a golden robe, leading a band while a girl kept pouring me champagne when I required it,” Rønnenfelt explained. “This raised the question, ‘What sort of music would go along with this picture?’” Rønnenfelt discovered the answer to that question with a lineup rounded out by Kristian Emdal and Anton Rothstein of Lower, Cæcilie Trier (Choir of Young Believers), Bo H. Hansen (Hand of Dust, Sexdrome) and Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary). Under Rønnenfelt’s leadership, the group composed some music, rehearsed twice, and played their show. It was decided that night that this incarnation of Marching Church would make a record. This World Is Not Enough was influenced at first by obscure works like David Maranha’s experimental drone-rock saga Antarctica, and eventually by soul bandleaders like James Brown and Sam Cooke. “The whole month of writing and rehearsing and the one week we had in the studio was truly an explosion of ideas,” Rønnenfelt said. “Improvisation, something I have never worked with before, was crucial in the making of this album, considering the loose nature of the writing on some of these songs. The album works because of the band’s incredible ability of breathing life into these, at times, very simple ideas and experiments.”

RiYL: Neu!, Can, Sunn O))) Föllakzoid began seven years ago as a trance experience between childhood friends Diego, Juan Pablo, and Domingo from Santiago, Chile. Heavily informed by the heritage of the ancient music of the Andes, the band has learned to integrate this influence with contemporary sounds of their times, creating a rich yet minimal atmosphere. For III, the band wanted to expand their sound while building an atmosphere with mainly monochords and reiteration. After recording and mixing the album on their own at their studio at BYM Records, they partnered with German electronic maestro Atom TM to flesh out the album’s synth parts. Most of the sounds he provided were atonal electronic sounds, aiming for concrete frequencies and sampled organic glitches. (The Korg synthesizer Atom TM plays on this record was used by Kraftwerk on a tour during the ’80s and given to him by Florian Schneider.) III is a four-part minimal sound voyage in which you can hear Föllakzoid’s musical language developing into something more upbeat, obscure, and sharp, yet even simpler in terms of elements. During the past year, the band played more than 80 gigs, including at Primavera Sound Festival (both Porto and Barcelona), ATP Festival in the UK, Musique Volantes in Lyon, and Lollapalooza Chile. The shows for III, including a confirmed set at Austin Psych Fest in May, should spread the band’s fog-enshrouded gospel to an even wider audience.

MERCHANDISE (STRANGE SONGS) IN THE DARK Loss I Locked The Door Foolish (Her Song) I Get Lost Worthless Apology What Was Left Behind In The Dark

CATALOG #: JAGSPEC19 RELEASE DATE: MARCH 31, 2015 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/EXPERIMENTAL KEY MARKETS: TAMPA, NEW YORK, WASHINGTON DC, CHICAGO, PHILADELPHIA, LOS ANGELES, SEATTLE, ATLANTA

Back in print and readily available (for perhaps the first time), we have Merchandise’s debut LP (Strange Songs) In The Dark. The album, recorded in early 2010, marks a decisive break from the band’s straightforward early post-punk EP’s, moving instead toward the more experimental studio-based pop constructions that would be further explored in the subsequent Children of Desire and Totale Nite albums. (Strange Songs) was recorded by the core duo of Carson Cox and David Vassalotti. Despite the lo-fi nature of this home recording, there are tons of hooks to be found amidst the haze (notably “I Locked the Door” and “Worthless Apology”). Occasionally veering into abstractions, the album as a whole is a piece that warrants listening as such. It’s a sad bastard of a record, but one with plenty of range and ideas. Not rehash but reimagination. Many moments on (Strange Songs) (especially the moody “Foolish” and “In The Dark”) foreshadow Merchandise’s eventual signing to the 4AD label. Fans of the band’s later albums will find much to enjoy on this early effort. [[Originally a split release between DIY punk labels Katorga Works and Drugged Conscience Records.]]

and styles characterize the music of Reptar, culminating from the band’s disparate array of influences. Comparisons can be made to bands like Talking Heads and MGMT, but Reptar simultaneously showcases musicianship in the heritage of Frank Zappa, Rush, Mike Patton, and Tortoise - creating a blend of party music suitable for music nerds. The band’s 2012 debut, Body Faucet, was characterized by Pitchfork as “Afro-tribalelectro-twee-pop” for college kids who “seriously like nothing more than to throw the fuck down” (3.0 out of 10). Now in 2015, Reptar is back to deliver on the hype. Lurid Glow is an expansive, artful development for the band, as catchy as it is difficult to classify. Building upon their party-wielding instincts, Lurid Glow fuses arrangements of horns, keyboards, guitars, and much more into compositionally-

refined, booty-shaking anthems. Whether it’s the pulsating “Ice Black Sand” that transforms effortlessly from droning arpeggios to gorgeous pop choruses, the simple steel drum serenade of “Amanda”, or the 80s-prog-tinged “Cable”, Lurid Glow is a compelling statement from a band on their own unruly trajectory.

PRESS QUOTES / SELLING POINTS:

As ever, he’s cloaking serious ideas in the midst of surrealist frivolity, like a spoonful of sugar to philosophy’s medicine. Other artists may fear not being taken seriously, but Nathan can’t imagine a world where his metaphysical pop tunes wouldn’t be infiltrated by mirthful runs of sub-Seinfeld slap bass. “There’s no point in not having fun with it,” he says. “It’s not even an option. It just seems like a false reflection of life.” -The Fader “No Mutant Jive” is melodically deadpan in tone, but critical in his call for a restructuring of the world, earning its charm from the track’s slow-danceability.” -Adhoc

Jerry Paper is the sonic caricature of New York-based musician Lucas Nathan. Brought into the world after Nathan’s previous, more abstract projects dissolved into the ether, Jerry Paper represents a cartoonish vision of Self materialized through Jerry’s bizarre vision of pop music. Nathan’s latest full-length under the Jerry Paper moniker, Carousel, combines his fascination with synthetic reproductions of “real” instruments with his own brand of philosophical meditations. The album furthers the effort to make “goofy” sounds into “serious” music through the juxtaposition of idiosyncratic lyrics, sounds, and structures within the “grammar” of pop music. That being said, the album is much more than the sum of it’s parts. Like his other releases, Carousel is meant to be taken not so much song-by-song but as a complete piece. Weaving through themes of greed, corruption, waste, impermanence, and belief, the listener is presented with a world of piggies, cockroaches, and garbage people set to a soundtrack of quasi-orchestral synth madness, a kind of saccharine sheen that you’re not sure is cleanliness or grease; all you can be sure of is that you’re riding out Jerry’s trip.

Partir to Live (2012) is a non-narrative film experience in sensations, in ethical confusion, and in physical and psychic contusions, directed by Domingo GarciaHuidobro of Föllakzoid. Dutch minimalist composer Jozef van Wissem’s score for the film consists of appropriated 12-string electric guitar drone, black baroque lute mirror images, and minimal electronics. For the first time ever, Sacred Bones Records will release the DVD and soundtrack LP together in a limited one-time pressing of 1000 copies. Garcia-Huidobro is an aficionado of paranormal experiences. Partir to Live sees him attempting to reconstruct the previous moments of what could have been one of these episodes. High-tension cables, a forest, an abandoned church, a barefoot woman; past, present and future become confused, and in this dissolved reality, he is not sure to have found what he was looking for. Partir to Live was part of the official selection at Valdivia Film Festival and premiered internationally at ATP Festival in Camber Sands, England. It has screened at over a dozen more festivals since, including SXSW Film in Austin, Brussels Film Fest, and the Moscow International Film Festival.

LCD Soundsystem Losing My Edge (White Label) Tracklist: 1. Losing My Edge

2. Beat Connection

An edition of 250 white label records, hand-stamped and assembled at the DFA offices. Reissue of the debut release from DFA founder and eclectic producer James Murphy, Losing My Edge is a wild blend of electro-disco madness that touches on Murphy’s roots in the punk and performance arenas. “James Murphy must be having the time of his life. The beefy Brooklynite is one half of DFA, the in-demand producers who transformed The Rapture from skronky art-punks into a relevant-sounding concern. Now, as LCD Soundsystem, Murphy mines a similar seam of nervy hedonism and raw punk-funk energy on these two sevenminute-plus dub disco anthems.... Dig this record not because it’s fashionable and cool, but because it’s the sound of a major new talent striving—and succeeding—to be original.” —NME, 2002

BIO

It's amazing how much can happen in a short time frame. At the beginning of 2012, Anthony Naples didn't have a song to his name; by the end of that year, he'd been heralded as one of the city's rising producer talents. The genesis was “Mad Disrespect” — a single that dominated Brooklyn's underground electronic music scene from even before its offical release. The track was a milestone for all involved. Not only was it Naples' first single, but it also was the first track he'd recorded, period. On a whim, he sent the track to Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter, the founders of New York's respected Mister Saturday Night series. A regular at their parties but an unknown to the duo, Anthony caught the pair's attention with “Mad Disrespect,” and ended up as the cornerstone of label's inaugural release: the Mad Disrespect EP. Anthony's music caught the ear of a number of people that summer, none more important than Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, who commissioned Anthony to remix his single “128 Harps” — again, Anthony's first remix at that point. From there on, things sped up. He followed “Mad Disrespect” with a series of 12” released on a veritable who's who of influential labels: Scotland's respected Rubadub label, Four Tet's Text Records, Opal Tapes — all of which culminated in El Portal, his EP for Will Bankhead's Trilogy Tapes imprint. Along the way, he was invited to open for Four Tet at London's Fabric and invited to play Berlin's prestigious Panorama Bar. And now, a little over two years later, comes Body Pill, Anthony Naples debut full-length for Text Records. As Anthony tells it, the title comes from a mangled English translation that caught his eye in a Japanese vending machine. “When I ran the title past Kieran, and he said it just sounded like a lost rave classic, but I thought in the end it makes sense. The LP is a small dose of synthetic noises and rhythms.” Naples says. Stylistically, the album draws inspiration from the city that gave Anthony his start: New York. “I wanted to make a streetwise record that was also solid and simple, like a brick or those weird fluorescent light tubes in the subway. They give off this weird hum that you hear only when you're alone in the station between trains late at night. I wanted to make a record that evoked that experience.” Body Pill is a surprising album for Anthony, his most understated and mature release to date. Body Pill opens with a wall of ambient noise on “Ris,” only to be overtaken by a modest synth groove. Ambient noise washes over and eventually overtakes tracks like “Way Stone” and “Pale” later on in the record. But that's not to say there aren't echoes of Naples' work for Mister Saturday Night lurking throughout the record. “Abrazo” feels like the natural companion to Anthony's earlier singles, with elegant strings mingling with a deconstructed house-inspired beat. “Used to Be” is arguably Anthony's largest beat to date whose rolling hi-hats counterbalance the track's stabbing synths. The album's closer “Miles” abruptly morphs from a lo-fi house anthem into a surprisingly minimal synth soundscape, a microcosm of the record as a whole.

overview :

1. East to West

Master guitarist, Yonatan Gat (Monotonix) is back with 11 new punk inspired, improvisational, psychedelic mind melters. Recorded live by Chris Woodhouse (Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees) in less than 3 days during a US tour, the band went into the studio with just a few songs and ideas. The goal was to capture the riotous and intricate improvisations of the band’s live show. In this spirit, they ended up playing in the studio for hours upon hours, filling endless tapes with the band improvising live, while Woodhouse meticulously recorded every single note being played.

2. Casino CafĂŠ 3. Canal 4. Gold Rush 5. Theme From a Dark Party 6. North to South 7. Boxwood 8. Gibraltar 9. Underwater Prelude 10. L'Atlantis 11. Tanto Que Nem Tem

Inspired by soundtrack virtuosos like Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota, Director is edited as a cinematic circular journey around the world, East to West and North to South. This journey is interconnected by field recordings that Gat has taken during his travels, giving it a feeling of space and time. The result is a genre-bending opus that finds the band seamlessly exploring different styles of music from Brazilian psych and Afrobeat to free jazz, surf and 20th century avant-garde, sometimes in the span of just one song. Gat's wildly inventive, reverb-drenched guitar offensive takes simultaneous lead and rhythm duties, backed by Gal Lazer's hard-hitting African-inspired grooves, and Sergio Sayeg's (of Brazilian garage rockers Garotas Suecas) pumping bass.

Steve Taylor & The Perfect Foil – Goliath LP

________________________________________________

Labeling a band comprised of accomplished Nashville rock scene purveyors as a “new artist” seems like a misnomer. But for Steve Taylor & The Perfect Foil, this designation is only a technicality due to the surprising confidence and self-assurance of their debut album, Goliath.

gave his permission and sanctioned the band’s edit. The follow-up video for “Standing In Line” features footage from Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski’s Le Depart that depicts Jeanne Pierre-Léaud and Catherine-Isabelle Duport as two lovers who connect and disconnect over and over throughout the film.

Longtime friends and frequent creative collaborators, Steve Taylor & The Perfect Foil (Jimmy Abegg, guitar; John Painter, bass; Peter Furler, drums) is a natural assemblage of diverse talents with a common drive - to rediscover the thrill of creating music unencumbered by the confines of industry limitations and reins.

Says Taylor of the band: “Between the four of us we’ve got a pretty encyclopedic knowledge of music and John has a massive album collection right in the control room of his studio. So we'll flip through it and be referencing a Sham 69 album from the early '80s British punk scene, or something from Coltrane or Miles Davis, or Gang of Four or Television.”

Steve Taylor had a solo career in addition to a run with the band Chagall Guevara, of whom Rolling Stone's Parke Puterbaugh said: “Not since the Clash has a group so effectively turned militant discontent into passionate rock & roll and still maintained a sense of perspective and humor, however black.” Not since the New Radicals did a band break up so quickly after one acclaimed album, but Taylor emerged from the embers of Chagall Guevara to move more to the production side of things and start his own label. Disillusionment with the business side of the music industry pushed Taylor toward filmmaking, with two theatrical features to his credit, including the low-budget indie Blue Like Jazz, the funding campaign for which helped put Kickstarter on the map. That project's success led Taylor to also use the same crowdsourcing site to raise money for Goliath, his return to music after years in the indie-film wilderness. Those supporters received the album digitally at the end of 2014. Through talks planning out some potential 2015 touring opportunities, Sounds Familyre got involved to release the vinyl version. Label founder Daniel Smith says, “Steve Taylor is a pro and he's just being himself. Listen to that voice...they don't make them like that anymore. Is it possible to be a true rocker, an observer, a lover, and funny as anything? Yup that's Steve Taylor. He's got a new killer band backing him named "The Perfect Foil" and they have a fantastic new album called Goliath. Sounds Familyre is thrilled and humbled to be releasing the LP version of this new album.” Preceding their 11-song collection, co-produced by Menomena’s Danny Seim, is their video for the single “Only a Ride.” Befitting a lyric that deals in waivers and liability issues as a metaphor for the psychic perils of 21st century existence, the video finds Taylor and company carefully composited into safety-defying footage from the 1980 cult film Stunt Rock trailer, directed by one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite filmmakers, Brian Trenchard-Smith. The director

SF51LP:

With Goliath, Steve Taylor & The Perfect Foil are poised to share their intelligent yet primal indie rock sound for those with discriminating tastes and a deep appreciation for independent thinking, razor-sharp lyrics, and white noise distortion.

PRESS “Everything here is wound tight and ready to pounce…Most of the songs build to moments of bug-eyed, bleeding-throat punk fury…[“Only A Ride” is] like “The Entertainment” from Infinite Jest as filtered through a Richard Hell song. Throughout Goliath, Taylor makes his points through implication rather than explication, dropping hints and reveling in some of the knottiest, cleverest wordplay of his career. Lyrically, the album mostly favors the artfilm, up-for-interpretation approach Taylor employed with Chagall Guevara, stringing clever phrases together like popcorn on a Christmas tree and letting the listener do the untangling.” – J.
