BEN ABRAHAM SIRENS CATALOG #: SC330 RELEASE DATE: MARCH 4, 2015 FORMAT: CD/2XLP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 50 GENRE: SINGER/SONGWRITER KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK CITY, LOS ANGELES, NASHVILLE, CHICAGO TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: EXCLUSIVE TO INERTIA IN AUSTRALIA, EXCLUSIVE TO HOSTESS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA VINYL NOT RETURNABLE

ABOUT THE ALBUM In contrast to its ethereal title, Ben Abraham’s Sirens is deeply human. Its songs were written over the artist’s developing years as a writer and the album has become a kind of musical documentary of the loss, longing and growth that carried Abraham from his very first lyric to this, his first long-player. Abraham first found his voice writing songs whilst working in a hospital. Eight years on, he’s made an album, toured with Emmylou Harris, co-written with Grammy-nominated singer Sarah Barreilles and made Sirens, his debut album. Originally self-released in Australia, Sirens is now receiving a worldwide release via Secretly Canadian. He recorded Sirens with two local friends, Jono Steer (who was his live mixer) and percussionist Leigh Fisher. A number of other Melbourne musicians joined in on sessions, including Gossling, whose angelic voice can be heard in the opening track. Gotye helped produce the haunting vocals on “Speak”, while “experimental electronic producer” Tim Shiel assisted on “This Is On Me”. “This Is On Me”, co-written/sung with Sara Bareilles, has its own story. After Abraham posted a song [“To Sara, From Ben”] on You Tube, Bareilles’ fans began to tweet the video and it grabbed her attention. When she played Melbourne in 2011, she invited Abraham up on stage to co-sing a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire”, and an original co-write was subsequently born. Abraham still plans to tour solo (on guitar, ukulele, piano and harmonium), as he ventures outside of Australia to seduce the world with his songs, stories and charm. The sirens are calling you his way.

‘Shoo’ is the debut album from Lionlimb, the project of songwriter Stewart Bronaugh and drummer Joshua Jaeger. The record is a collection of songs Bronaugh wrote between 2012 and 2015 while living in Chicago, San Francisco, and Nashville. After returning from an Australian tour playing guitar and drums in Angel Olsen’s band, Lionlimb began recording ‘Shoo’ in 2015 with Robin Eaton. Bronaugh and Jaeger started by tracking live drums and piano, and then for weeks Bronaugh filled up reel after reel, layering compulsively over their recordings. In the spring, Bronaugh and Eaton began the task of peeling away the layers. The resulting sessions proved to be a departure from the duo’s previous recordings with a shift toward jazz, rock and soul with the addition of saxophone and Fender rhodes. The album’s influences can be traced back to Miles Davis’ ‘On the Corner’, Jack London, Schumann, Elliott Smith, and Jackson Pollock. Digital list price: $9.98

After releasing three albums with their band Candy Claws, Karen and Ryan Hover have evolved into Sound of Ceres. Joined by Robert Schneider of the Apples In Stereo and Jacob Graham of the Drums, Sound of Ceres draws influence from an array of genres and decades, exploring soundscape-laden, dreamy pop. The Colorado-based group crafts a lush, ethereal sound which pulls as much from mid-century lounge music and '70s nature documentary soundtracks as it does from '90s shoegaze and modern sampling techniques.

JNR187 LP-C1

Sound of Ceres’ debut LP, Nostalgia for Infinity, is released March 4th 2016 on Joyful Noise Recordings. The album is a conceptual retelling of the '60s Brazilian hit "The Girl from Ipanema" - except the girl is replaced with a spinning antiprism, and the unrequited longing is replaced with an existential shout into the expanding universe. Nostalgia for Infinity also explores the parallel between the '60s hit song and Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time, in which Proust describes "a world beyond us but within our understanding."

Guerilla Toss Eraser Stargazer Ecstatic, vital, and brilliantly unhinged, Guerilla Toss promotes positive energy and twisted spirituality through the less-traveled path of brutal, intelligent, live rock and roll dance music. Like a hurricane of healing bliss, a Guerilla Toss concert is more of a ritual than a performance. It is the unique pairing of musical voices and backgrounds that makes Guerilla Toss such a special party band. But they are more than that – GT gets real when you pay close attention. Their music is inspired by both tragedy and beauty, drug addiction/mental illness and the re-birth of the soul through spiritual practice and psychedelic drug healing - helping the listener overcome these mind-fuck hardships. GT had a productive 2015, releasing their acclaimed DFA debut Flood Dosed, which cemented support from folks ranging from punk icon Henry Rollins to Busy P of Justice’s Ed Banger Records. The band also relocated from Boston to NYC. “We felt like it was time to move closer to our favorite active bands and artists and they all just so happen to live in NYC!” This didn’t slow the pace of their live performances - between road trips to universities and DIY Festivals, they have a de-facto residency at Brooklyn’s premiere underground venue Palisades and scored opening slots for The Juan Maclean and Mission of Burma. Eraser Stargazer was written and recorded in 6 weeks of winter isolation in upstate New York. Fans of the group will hear all of the beloved hallmarks of the Guerilla Toss sound - solid bass grooves, squealing guitars, and kitchen sink percussion. Each instrument now occupies its own part of the audio spectrum, with vocalist/poet Kassie Carlson’s spirited incantations brought into focus. Album centerpiece Grass Shack is a perfect example of this leaner, yet tougher Toss. It traverses nearly seven minutes of gameshow-winner keyboard stabs, mutant funk basslines, and time signature changes - all grounded by Peter Negroponte’s virtuosic drumming. Carlson describes the themes of the song as “A deep analytical depiction of a small unit of time, with heightened senses, Ripping yourself out of bed even though it might be harsh and overwhelming. Seeing patterns in the little things that make life beautiful.” Heavy subject matter permeates the rest of the record - but that doesn’t mean it’s a downer. Lead single Diamond Girls casts Carlson as a no-wave cheerleader over instrumentation reminiscent of DFA alumni Black Dice and The Rapture, culminating in the group’s catchiest chorus yet. Album closer Doll Face On The Calico Highway is the perfect summation - angular guitars, bells, and low-end vibrations interject and decompose as quickly as they appear, until a hissing cymbal is all that remains. Eraser Stargazer is released by DFA on March 4th, 2016. The initial pressing is limited to 1000 copies on dayglo orange vinyl.

CARTER TANTON Jettison the Valley

ABOUT THIS RECORD By the time he was 15, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Carter Tanton was already playing bar shows in his hometown of Baltimore. Two years later, he caught the attention of Gary E. Smith, best known for discovering and producing The Pixies. After working together for a year, they parted ways, but Tanton never slowed down. In the mid-2000's he released a couple of EPs with his band Tulsa, prompting Rolling Stone's David Fricke to claim "…his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world…", and after a particularly impressive live set KEXP's John Richards said "…he's one of the best singer-songwriters in the country today." Beyond his critical acclaim, Tanton's early work was cited as an inspiration by his old friend Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs. As Granduciel recalled in an interview with Pitchfork, "He was sleeping in someone's basement, playing every instrument, going through this breakup,...That was the first time I saw someone make music obsessively. I’d never seen anyone living inside of something, to that level." Over the years, Tanton has toured and recorded with numerous artists including Marissa Nadler, Strand of Oaks, Lower Dens, and The War on Drugs. In 2012, he assembled Freeclouds, his first collection of songs for Western Vinyl. A couple of years later, Tanton moved to England where he wrote all of the songs on his new album Jettison the Valley. The change of environment, and his rediscovery of early British influences including Richard Thompson, Nick Drake and John Cale sparked a powerful shift in perspective, which led him to write his most cohesive and personal work to date. Other than the pedal steel featured on two songs, Tanton engineers and plays every instrument on the album. His old friend and collaborator Marisa Nadler contributes lead vocals to "Jettison the Valley", and Sharon Van Etten sings on "Twenty-Nine Palms" and "Through the Garden Gates". More about Jettison the Valley in his own words: "Jettison the Valley began in a little dot of a town outside Bristol called Hambrook in the Fall of 2013. I had just moved to England with my girlfriend where we lived in a caravan on her family's plot of land with the M5 motorway on one side, and a horse farm on the other. To get away from the incessant low rumbling of cars, I often walked along the area's ancient public footpaths that carve strange ways through the countryside. On those walks, my previous 30 years in America billowed and collapsed in front of me. As I stood there in the blowback, the constant push of time seemed to finally relent, and I found enough distance from it to see my past in clear broad strokes. After a few months we moved to Oxford and lived in a little attic apartment up on a hill. I spent most days watching the weather roll through the valley and writing these songs about my relationship ending. Eventually, I felt I had to come back to the states to record them. I consider this my first solo record. The other two releases I've put out under my own name since 2005 were simply collections of scattered recordings, mixtapes essentially. Jettison was written in one long sitting, each song feeding the next."

PRESS QUOTES “...Carter Tanton has a spectacular voice...His voice, as much as the songwriting, makes these songs memorable and gives them an ageless quality. Though Tanton could probably sing a recipe for chocolate éclairs and still make it sound good. – Pitchfork "...his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world — set in the same alpine reverb where Jim James of My Morning Jacket lives — while the iridescent bloom of the guitars is a quality flashback to the clean-twang and country-fuzz blend of the 1968-69 Byrds.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone LP UPC 656605465715

yndi halda – Under Summer LP/cd

__________________________________________________ A. Together Those Leaves (10:36) B. Golden Threads from the Sun (14:12) C. Helena (18:07) D. This Very Flight (15:05) In some respects, yndi halda only looks like a real band from the outside- releasing a record, touring, playing festivals. Internally, the band exists more like hobbyists – five young men who starting writing music together at school, and who are given occasion to share that music here and there. Of course, yndi halda loves releasing records and touring, and pours a great, great deal of themselves into their music, but it’s not a fully accurate picture of the five of them. The band doesn’t play music full-time. And for a very long period, the members didn’t live in the same city, meeting only occasionally to play shows. Sometimes they were barely able to see each other for months. But now, four (of five) of the band members live in Brighton, and thus have been able to release a new album - Under Summer - after a few years away. yndi halda has been working on this new album since their debut - they even began playing one of the new album tracks when they toured Asia and the United States in 2007 – but didn’t create the final recorded versions everyone agreed upon until much more recently. This was partially because of the expanded sound palette. Introducing vocals was a change for the band and something they wanted to get right. Likewise, the fuller, more expansive arrangements and larger-scale composition. And of course the production. The original bass player Daniel Lovegrove recorded the debut LP Enjoy Eternal Bliss in a friend’s barn on a mobile setup in a few days. Under Summer took yndi halda, over some months, to three different studios with three high-grade producers and even incorporated some home recording. yndi spent a great deal of time and energy recording the album during the periods that they could, during the times that everyone could afford away from our own lives and responsibilities, numerous and demanding. And yndi halda is incredibly excited to start this next step. To share with people that music that has lived with them for years, that has been argued over and sweated for, recorded and un-recorded and re-recorded, abandoned, and then rescued. yndi halda called the album Under Summer. It is two references, for them at least – inevitably it will mean something different to everyone who hears the album. But for the band, it is the very upper limit of the sky under which they wrote and recorded the album. The endless July days that they played into, a perfect calm, and joy. But it’s also a sadness. ‘Under’ as in ‘beneath’; sorrow and heartache. yndi finds this important because they want to express that in their music too – sadness and bliss; what one means to the other. That sentiment was a driving force. Not only in the composition, but in recording and finishing the album. The musical silence between the records was characterized by (and makes up part of) that sadness and bliss too. yndi halda also listened to lots of music -- far too many bands and records to name – and watched endless films and read endless books, wrote endless academic papers through their respective universities, wrote solo albums, published fiction, underwent great personal changes, and moved cities and countries. They lost a bass player (Brendan was offered the Sam Smith touring band gig and he took it) and replaced him with their very close friend (and incredible talent) Alex Petersen, with whom they had played with in other bands for years. All of that became part of Under Summer, its composition and its expression.

________________________________________________ It’s a very personal album (hence singing) and while it means something very different to every member of yndi halda, it means a huge amount to all of them. Something far larger than written words in a press release, but something yndi halda hopes is present and perceptible in the record. yndi halda formed as teenagers and released their debut record Enjoy Eternal Bliss in 2006 through Big Scary Monsters (UK / Europe), Burnt Toast Vinyl (USA) and XTAL Records (Japan). Their music is at once subtle and joyous, hitting huge emotional peaks around moments of serene gentleness and heartbreaking sadness in its orchestration of sonorous guitar interlacing, meticulously crafted string arrangements and - now - soaring vocal harmonies. Described as “epic beauty” by Drowned in Sound and “electrifying” by The Line of Best Fit, Enjoy Eternal Bliss picked up accolades worldwide, leading the band to tours across the UK, Europe, USA, and Asia, including shows at London’s famed Barbican Hall, Koko and Union Chapel venues, and entirely selling out a short residency at Hoxton Hall. PRESS “‘Golden Threads From The Sun’ is a fluid, rolling piece which is carried along before crashing into life at its mid-way point, as the band have always done best. This first preview shows no change in ambition after eight years away: they’re still shooting for the stars.” –Will Richards, DIY Magazine

Mikael Seifu —Zelalem Mikael Seifu’s Zelalem is an ode to – and a fearless break from – the storied lineage of Ethiopian music. The literal Amharic translation of Zelalem is “eternity,” and through Seifu’s conceptual frame it becomes a “vector of light.” Seifu shines this light on the music of his home country while guiding us through an uncharted “Ethiopiyawi Electronic” – a coinage Seifu uses to describe the music he and his peers are producing in Ethiopia’s capital city of Addis-Ababa. Illuminating the rich sounds of Addis-Ababa’s azmaris, Seifu’s music becomes a “dream brew” in which these traditional musicians collaborate and contribute vocals and lead voicings from folk instruments such as the Masenko and the Krar. Seifu was educated at the Lycée Guebre-Mariam in AddisAbaba. The French academy’s international group of students was Seifu’s first exposure to a world outside Ethiopia; his second was at Ramapo College in suburban New Jersey. Here Seifu met a mentor in Ben Neill, the composer and music technologist who trained with La Monte Young. Seifu was inspired by Neil to take serious his calling in music. A calling of a different, spiritual nature brought Mikael back to Ethiopia. As a repatriated young man in Addis-Ababa, Seifu felt a renewed sense of allegiance to his home country and allowed its ubiquitous music to guide his creations. Seifu’s early work was shared across a string of EPs for stalwart Washington D.C. imprint 1432 R, demonstrating an interplay of regional folk music and international electronic music. Mikael’s music does not westernize or electronicize extant Ethiopian music. Instead, Seifu uses Ethio-Jazz’s spirit of brewing estranged styles for his own musical tincturing. Seifu’s passion above all else is to create something befitting of its time, yet “eternally Ethiopian.” The latter phrase was the mantra guiding Seifu through the creation of Zelalem, and a source of inspiration for the cover artwork. Zelalem spotlights the music of Ethiopia’s past as well its future. Mikael Seifu illustrates the potential for reinterpreting sacred and proud sources through energized palettes. His latest effort heralds the future of this new music and signals the genesis of Ethiopian Electronic, where the known and unknown commune.
