For more than 12 years, Marissa Nadler has perfected her own take on the exquisitely sculpted gothic American songform. On her seventh full-length, Strangers, she has shed any self-imposed restrictions her earlier albums adhered to, stepped through a looking glass, and created a truly monumental work. In the two years since 2014’s elegiac, autobiographical July, Nadler has reconciled the heartbreak so often a catalyst for her songwriting. Turning her writing to more universal themes, Nadler dives deep into a surreal, apocalyptic dreamscape. Her lyrics touch upon the loneliness and despair of the characters that inhabit them. These muses are primal, fractured, disillusioned, delicate, and alone. They are the unified voice of this record, the titular “strangers.” This sense of “end times” is exemplified by the sparse, piano-driven opener “Divers of the Dust.” Written utilizing a Dadaist cut-up technique (popularized by David Bowie and William S. Burroughs), Nadler layers hypnagogic imagery of waves pulling cities into the ocean over a very personal tale of longing. Once again partnered with July producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Black Mountain) Nadler has created a new album equal in sonic quality to the apocalyptic lyrical tone that covers its 44 minutes. In places her voice and guitar play off subsonic synths, while elsewhere, as in “Katie I Know,” a pulsing drumbeat launches the song off into an intense, confrontational place. “Janie in Love” is another full-band highlight, marrying the album’s most allegorically primal lyrics to the melodic hooks that makes Nadler one of the best songwriters working today.

Widely celebrated as a masterpiece—arguably the greatest concept album of all time—his spare, haunting 1975 debut LP Juarez is a violent, fractured tale of the chthonic American Southwest and borderlands. Produced in collaboration with the artist and meticulously remastered from the original analog tapes, this is the definitive edition of the art-country classic: the first reissue on vinyl; the first to feature the originally intended artwork (including the art prints that accompanied the first edition); and the first to contextualize the album within Allen’s fifty-year art practice. “Things separate from their stories have no meaning. They are only shapes. Of a certain size and color. A certain weight. When their meaning has become lost to us they no longer have even a name. The story on the other hand can never be lost from its place in the world for it is that place. And that is what was to be found here. The corrido. The tale. And like all corridos it ultimately told one story only, for there is only one to tell.” — Cormac McCarthy, The Crossing

Juarez is not just an album, at least not in any ordinary sense of the word. Songwriter and visual artist Terry Allen describes it instead as a “haunting.” For nearly five decades, Juarez has served as the elusive, enigmatic axis mundi of his artistic and musical practices. Never discrete or static, the Juarez mythos continually accretes a growing constellation of new meanings, mutations, and manifestations, defying linearity and finality, appearing as drawings, constructions, songs, prints, installations, texts, a screenplay, a musical theater piece (co-written with David Byrne), a one-woman stage play, and an NPR radio play (both starring his wife, the actor and writer Jo Harvey Allen). Herein Juarez inhabits the ur-corrido sonic artifact, a cycle of fifteen songs and recited poems—austere, atmospheric, cinematic—as recorded over the course of a few mornings at San Francisco’s venerable Wally Heider Studio in 1974. Its stately, minimal arrangements—Allen on piano and vocals, with guitarists Peter Kaukonen (Link Wray, Jefferson Airplane, Black Kangaroo) and Greg Douglas (Van Morrison, Peter Rowan, Steve Miller Band)—belie its sinister, mongrel strangeness, its anxious hilarity, its casual alloy of spirituality and profanity, its uncanny enormity as story. Originally released in 1975 by print workshop Landfall Press in an edition of fifty, with a set of nine lithographs (reproduced in full for the first time in the reissue’s extensive book), the record encompasses both conceptual corrido and cosmic cartography, song and séance, at once hermetic and wide-open. In these fifty-two minutes, geographies, climates, and spectral bodies collide and elide, dragged and fate-flung across the parched Southwest, over mesas and arroyos and through the abraded lens of colonial history, throwing dust, shedding blood, and further blurring the already arbitrary, and forever contested, boundaries of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. As described in one of the periodic narrative “dialogue” interludes spoken by Allen, Juarez recounts a deceptively “simple story”: a bleak journey, told in nonlinear terms, from Southern California through Colorado and into the Texas-Mexico borderlands. Like many cross-country road trips, it’s as harrowing as it is humorous, often within the margins of a single song or even an isolated line. The action revolves around two couples and their fateful—or arbitrary—murderous meeting in Cortez, Colorado. Sailor, on leave from the Navy, meets Spanish Alice, a prostitute, in a Tijuana bar; they get married and honeymoon in a mountain trailer park in Cortez. Meanwhile, on a crime spree detour, pachuco antihero Jabo and the witchy “rock-writer” Chic Blundie drive North from L.A. to Cortez on their way South to Jabo’s hometown of Ciudad Juarez (until recently the homicide capital of the world). Only one couple emerges from the bloody trailer, escaping across the New Mexican desert to Juarez, where they part, assuming (or absorbing?) new identities. Terry Allen is no stranger to the ramifications of border-crossing—it’s something he’s been doing both literally and figuratively, geographically and professionally, for his entire adult life. A native West Texan who now lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico—he hails from Lubbock, also home to Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, and the Flatlanders—Allen occupies a unique position straddling the disparate worlds of country music and visual art. We’re not sure that you could say the same about anyone else, ever, and certainly not with the same level of aplomb, acclaim, and success—not to mention the same biting, self-effacing sense of humor about it all. Allen’s artwork resides in the collections of the Met, MoMA, the Hirshhorn, and Los Angeles’ MoCA and LACMA, among many other institutions, and has been exhibited internationally at Documenta and the São Paolo, Paris, Sydney, and Whitney Biennales. You can encounter his public commissions across the U.S. He is the recipient of Guggenheim and NEA Fellowships. In the realm of music, in addition to several projects with the aforementioned Byrne, Allen has likewise collaborated closely with Guy Clark, Lloyd Maines (pedal steel master, producer, and father of the Dixie Chicks’ Natalie), and the Flatlanders (Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore). His songs have been covered, recorded, and championed by the likes of Dave Alvin, Laurie Anderson, Bobby Bare, Ryan Bingham, Don Everly, Jason Isbell, Robert Earl Keen, Little Feat, Ricky Nelson, Peter Rowan, Doug Sahm, Sturgill Simpson, and Lucinda Williams. Forty years later, Juarez is widely regarded as Allen’s first masterpiece, timelessly relevant, resonating with works of film and literature as much as other music, recalling the existential violence of Terrence Malick’s Badlands (1973) and informing successors like David Lynch’s Wild at Heart (1990), Cormac McCarthy’s Border Trilogy (1992-98), and Roberto Bolaño’s 2666 (2004). Paradise of Bachelors will reissue Terry Allen’s critically acclaimed 1979 double album Lubbock (on everything), the follow-up to Juarez, later in 2016.

Distinct in their own right, these 4 songs are not to be dismissed as b-sides, outtakes, or the lesser of a group of songs. Though it uses Deep In The Iris as a compositional guidepost, Companion is a breathtaking journey all of its own. 12” EP: 061297490158

“Darkbloom announces Grimes' arrival as an avant-pop force.” - Pitchfork

CATALOGUE NUMBER: ABT017 ARTIST: Grimes / d'Eon TITLE: Darkbloom GENRE: Experimental, Synth-pop, Darkwave

A joint release by LA's Hippos In Tanks and Montreal's Arbutus Records, the Darkbloom EP is a thrilling split by d'Eon and Grimes. Harnessing the dark energy of her sophomore album Halfaxa, along with the shimmering dream pop of her debut Geidi Primes, Grimes’ side represents a synthesis of her two sonic personalities. Displaying a level of clarity and craftsmanship heretofore unseen in her releases, Boucher presents a stunning new collection of ethereal dreamscapes that expand her creative palette without compromising the spectral presence she is known for. Following the Middle-Eastern-tinged R&B of 2010’s Palinopsia, d’Eon broadens his stylistic breadth through reference to a number of electronic genres – for example, he simultaneously incorporates elements of Chicago footwork and new jack swing, but surprises the listener with strange forays into bygone genres such as UK drum and bass and trip hop. Presently available worldwide on CD and Digital formats, Darkbloom will be available on vinyl, for the frst time in many territories, on May 20th, 2016. ●

TIM HEIDECKER IN GLENDALE CATALOG #: RAD001 RELEASE DATE: MAY 20, 2016 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL

ABOUT THE ALBUM

CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 50

For the last decade, Tim Heidecker (along with his comedy partner Eric Wareheim) has proven to be one of our cult-comedy greats with his Adult Swim series "Tim & Eric's Awesome Show, Great Job!" and "Tim & Eric's Bedtime Stories." He's starred in indie films and played sold out stand-up sets around the world.

GENRE: ALTERNATIVE / INDIE ROCK KEY MARKETS: LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK CITY, SEATTLE, PORTLAND, SAN FRANCISCO/BAY AREA

But who is Tim Heidecker? Is he a real man with all the regular feels? Well, yes, of course he is. He resides on a hill in Glendale, CA, up to his armpits in diapers, bills, his mortgage, in the workaday life of a writer. It's this pedestrian side of his life from which Heidecker pulls the fodder for the aptly titled In Glendale, his first earnest collection of songwriting under his full name.

TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NOT AVAILABLE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA VINYL NOT RETURNABLE

In Glendale shows Heidecker shifting deftly from the mundane to the idiosyncratic; from the sentimental to the caustic; from the earnest to the humorous. His knack for crafting catchy tunes amid curious subject matter pops up in spades across In Glendale. "Ghost In My Bed" is a lovely little number about cutting off someone's head, sticking it in a plastic bag and burying it beneath the Hollywood sign. After an album's worth of songs about Hollywood murder fantasies, diaper changes and even a cameo from director David Gordon Green, you're left desperately trying to wipe the smile off your face.

Adult Jazz Earrings Off!

TRACK LISTING: 1. Earrings Off! 2. cry (for time off) 3. Eggshell 4. cry (for coherence) 5. Pumped From Above 6. Ooh Ah Eh 7. cry (for home) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Adult Jazz first appeared back in 2013, amid a flurry of praise surrounding their joyous and addictive debut single ‘Springful’. Their unanimously acclaimed debut album Gist Is (released in 2014) was a startling and mesmerising voyage from start to finish, taking a labyrinthian, fragmented pop-‐not-‐pop path, while maintaining a sense of humour in spite of its complex themes surrounding religion, gender and humanity. Following the release of Gist Is, the band went on to play sell out tours around Europe as well as festivals including Latitude, End of The Road, CMJ and Iceland Airways, attracting endorsements along the way from peers including David Byrne and Björk. Adult Jazz now return with a new record ‘Earrings Off!’, and their first for Tri Angle. Singer, Harry Burgess explains: “The record is about masculinity. Embodiment, lust, idealisation, privilege, legitimacy and limitation. It's about acknowledging the weight, with a view to liberation from its past clout. It's about picking your ideal body, and playing with body language to achieve authenticity. It's about the possibility of authenticity.” In contrast to Gist Is, Earrings Off! finds the band confidently veering into more electronic territory with elasticated beats and harsh vocal experimentations riding alongside off kilter horn arrangements and treated string sounds, all shaped by the band’s inimitable and unpredictable songwriting skills. Earrings Off! is the sound of a band breaking away from the crowd and becoming all the better for it.

“Sublime debut… for all its flips and flourishes the result is gleeful. Over time, a soulful, joyous record reveals itself” 4/5 Q “Both texturally ravishing and textually fascinating... The scope of Adult Jazz’s achievements slowly start to sink in. Out of nowhere, fully formed: utterly extraordinary” The Quietus “If you’re not a fan of this band already you will become a fan of this band… this is a record people will be talking about at the end of the year” NPR CATALOG: TRIANGLE36 ARTIST: Adult Jazz TITLE: Earrings Off! On Casino Drone, his third solo album, Mike Adams at His Honest Weight emerges as both a Hoosier power-pop auteur and a poet of the Indiana everyday. He crafts supremely catchy melodies and fashions ingenious arrangements that thrum with synthpop sparkle, shoegaze drone, classic rock fervor, and sonic textures that draw from easy listening as well as avant garde experiments. And it’s all in service to sharply intelligent songs balancing whimsy and melancholy, exuberance and doubt. It’s an album about the fabric of ordinary life: listening to the radio as your car heats up on a winter morning, waking up next to the same person for the rest of your life, getting a hug from your son. Each line is shaped like a question mark, as he poses queries to himself about himself and his surroundings.

feel something gnawing at him, worrying him in the middle of the night. “I got everything I ever wanted, and I’m still restless,” he admits. “I’ve been struggling to have this adult life, and I’m there. I’m at that point. Now what?”

“I feel like a self-appointed torchbearer,” he says of his home state. “I want to turn what’s good about the Midwest into something that’s artistically valuable. I don’t want Indiana to be left behind. I want to be a part of it and try to make it better.”

Making pop music has allowed him that outlet. Adams recorded these eleven songs himself, demoing ideas and recording almost all the instruments in his living room. He booked studio time only for the drums. “I went in and recorded the drum tracks in double time,” he explains. “Then we slowed the tape down so that they would be at the speed I had written the songs. That created this unusual foundation for everything, which created this pitched-down, slowed-down, dreamy sound.”

Indiana couldn’t ask for a better pop emissary. Born in Claypool (population: 311) but based in Bloomington, he paid his dues in a handful of indie pop bands before going solo with 2011’s Oscillate Wisely and 2014’s breakout Best of Boiler Room Classics. Written during a dark crisis, the latter builds upon the sounds and themes of a diverse array of influences, from Jimmy Webb and the Beach Boys, the Cure and Guided by Voices: songs about pop music as a balm in hard times, our favorite music as confessor and comforter. “I have a strange relationship with music in general,” he says. “That plays into my weird perspective in life too. I love music and I especially love a catchy hook, but I don’t care about music unless it speaks to me.”

Casino Drone is his attempt to answer that simple question. It’s a meditation on the everyday life as something epic, with songs documenting quiet moments of contentment as well as the nagging uncertainties that dog everyone—whether we ever admit it or not. “I still have this streak of wanting to be ornery, wanting to be tricky, even if it’s just on a recording. I don’t want to settle down, I guess, in spite of settling in.”

He then painstakingly built the songs up, one instrument at a time, experimenting with arrangements and textures while disregarding the verse-chorus-verse strictures typical of most pop songs. When every little thing was in place, he sent the tapes off to his old friend and long-time collaborator Adam Jessup, who as producer tweaked everything and made it sound just so. “This record feels bigger,” he says, “but there’s actually much less going on. Everything is simplified. Everything is sharpened. I wanted these songs to stand up without any tricks.”

Music remains a dominant theme on Casino Drone, but Adams has subsumed those influences into a sound that is more idiosyncratic, more ambitious, more personal—in short, more Mike Adams. The long ambient opening passage of “Ideas Man,” the weightless drift of “Stainless Still,” the tangle of guitar notes anchoring “On the Fumes”—these aren’t nods to his pop heroes, but the musical signatures of a confident artist who has come into his own.

His lush arrangements are anchored in the perfectly normal and sometimes weird world around him. Even the song about cult leaders avoids any kind of sensationalism. “Hobart Chuck Manson and Jim” is about three charismatic believers with ties to the Hoosier State: Jim Jones was born in Indianapolis, where Charles Manson spent time in juvie (before escaping and heading west!).

That’s nowhere more apparent that on “The Lucky One,” which is among the strongest songs in Adams’s growing catalog. After the chugging chords in the intro, he delivers a melody so clear and direct and so instantly memorable that you’d swear you’ve been humming it your whole life. The song pauses for a ruminative instrumental interlude, as though Adams is providing a blank for listeners to fill out: INSERT YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE HERE.

But the most interesting may be the most obscure: Hobart Freeman is the cult leader around the corner, a man who established his radical ministry in a house not a mile from Adams’s home in Claypool. “I didn’t know a lot about him, but my family would talk about his place, the Glory Barn. They would hold these wild prayer meetings trying to heal sick members, and they had several babies die at the church. It mysteriously burned down right before he died. It’s a crazy thing.”

Casino Drone, he says, was more difficult to make than either of his previous solo efforts, partly because there was no crisis to prod his creativity, no weight to get off his shoulders. Life had returned to something resembling normal: He and his wife bought a house and raised their son. He started hosting a web talk show and toured the country. While he would never complain that life was too good, he did

The song is more than merely a trip deep into eerie Indiana. It’s a means for Adams to explore the vagaries of faith and hope—our common need to believe in something bigger than ourselves. For him, it’s pop music. His unwavering belief in the restorative powers of a good hook or a snappy riff—“Faith heal me back to where I belong!”—has inspired one of the finest pop albums from Indiana or anywhere. – Stephen M. We Were Promised Jetpacks These Four Walls (ltd color LP) Opening with a lone guitar line that itself has all the momentum of entire genres crammed into a single set of chords, We Were Promised Jetpacks’ These Four Walls signifies a debut album that has the sort of peerlessness and potential to stand as a mainstay and luminary of indie music in the 21st century. Three albums on those words we wrote about We Were Promised Jetpacks debut album still ring true, and now this landmark of the band’s career is finally available in the US on LP. Long a sought after collector’s item, the original LP had a scant pressing Release date: 5/20/16 that appeared only as imports at the time of its release in 2009. Now the album, full File Under: Rock of explosive energy and knife-edge tension, packed with a bounty of fans’ live Territory Restrictions: Not Available to U.K. or Europe favorites; is returned to vinyl and all the better for it. 6

The band’s youthful energy (their average age at the time was 21) explodes thunderously as colossal choruses fall unfailingly into place. Every space is filled, tension bristling achingly in Thompson’s vocal delivery as the rest of the band crashes around him with a perfect balance of force and harmony. The romanticism and accessibility of a pure pop sensibility is never hidden too deep. Both “Roll Up Your Sleeves” and “Quiet Little Voices” capture this beautifully and immediately. The product of Ken Thomas’ (Sigur Ros, Cocteau Twins, David Bowie etc.) studio mastery and Peter Katis’ (Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, The National etc.) mixing, the recording of These Four Walls was almost entirely live, with only minimal overdubs, and the band members’ collected passion and intuition is translated into a pure, precise form, at once powerful and delicate. Never willing to overuse a melody, the precision and ability of We Were Promised Jetpacks’ songwriting is often most clearly evident in their song structures: intertwining, serpentine, effortlessly stirring, dynamic and intuitive. Even the album’s quietest moments (see the Jesus And Mary Chain guitar tones and electronica-braced, icy sprawl of “A Half-Built House” or the patient orchestration of “Keeping Warm”) are just as enveloping, just as deafening as the enthralling indie that pulses thrillingly through its loudest crescendos.

Deardrums LP - 12” Vinyl • Debut LP from Italian duo after 2 acclaimed EPs on 2MR last year • They will be touring as a live set to support the release along with some DJ sets • Hometown: Venice, Italy

Dum Dum Theme From D2 Wi n d i n g Wi r e s Nganna Nganna Tu c h u l c h a Aquila Mayan Machine Into Darkness Addio

Acclaimed Italian pair Deardrums, aka Bottin and Leo di Angilla, proudly present their adventurous debut album on 2MR. The 13 track LP is a continuation of their analogue heavy and inventive synth style as showcased on their EP’s to date which have received support from the likes of Laurent Garnier & Chloe and covers plenty of musical ground with great aplomb. African influences, tin pot percussion and scorched synths all bring a real sense of savannah heat to proceedings on cuts like ‘Mami Wata’ and there is a sense of tribalism in the tightly programmed drums and claps of ‘Mayan Machine’ that really stands this one apart. Authentic and unique throughout, this is a brilliant LP that is hard to categorise but easy to love thanks to its constant evolution and wide sphere of sonic influences. Deardums will be touring in support of its release with both a full live show and select club Dj sets.
