UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA MULTI-LOVE Multi-Love Like Acid Rain Ur Life One Night Can’t Keep Checking My Phone Extreme Wealth and Casual Cruelty The World Is Crowded Stage or Screen Necessary Evil Puzzles
CATALOG #: JAG262 RELEASE DATE: MAY 26, 2015 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, PORTLAND, SEATTLE, SAN FRANCISCO, CHICAGO, AUSTIN, PHILADELPHIA, BOSTON, ATLANTA, NASHVILLE TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NONE VINYL NOT RETURNABLE
The threads of our past never unravel, they hover like invisible webs, occasionally glistening due to a sly angle of the sun. On Multi-Love, Unknown Mortal Orchestra frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson reflects on relationships: airy, humid longing, loss, the geometry of desire that occurs when three people align. Where Nielson addressed the pain of being alone on II, Multi-Love takes on the complications of being together.
Multi-Love adds dimensions to the band’s already kaleidoscopic approach, with Nielson exploring a newfound appreciation for synthesizers. The new songs channel with the spirit of psych innovators without ignoring the last 40 years of music, forming a flowing, cohesive whole that reflects restless creativity. Cosmic escapes and disco rhythms speak to developing new vocabulary, while Nielson’s vocals reach powerful new heights. “It felt good to be rebelling against the typical view of what an artists is today, a curator,” he says. “It’s more about being someone who makes things happen in concrete ways. Building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life, creating sounds that aren’t quite like anyone else’s. I think that’s much more subversive.” While legions of artists show fidelity to the roots of psychedelia, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the rare quality that makes the genre’s touchstones so vital, constant exploration. - PRESS QUOTES “A genre-smashing blend of off-kilter funk and new wave romanticism" from consequence of sound” - Consequence Of Sound

SHANA CLEVELAND & THE SANDCASTLES OH MAN, COVER THE GROUND Shana Cleveland is a rare artist who seems dismissive of time. Sheʼs been performing with a rotating batch of musicians tagged as The Sandcastles for years, and yet Oh Man, Cover The Ground is their first proper album. It would be easy to chalk up the delay behind the debut to a slacker lifestyle—Oh Man, Cover The Groundʼs laid-back vibe certainly suggests an extremely casual approach to songcraft. But Cleveland is no slacker. In the years since she first started playing out under her own name, sheʼs helmed a number of other music projects; most notably her revered Girls In The Garage-inspired band La Luz. In her downtime, sheʼs crafted a set of 37 trading cards dedicated to obscure acoustic guitarists and a calendar of drawings depicting rock bands of yesteryear. The glacial pace of Oh Man, Cover The Groundʼs development has little to do with work ethic and everything to do with doing things in a way that feels right. “I don't really think of it as a proper band,” says Cleveland. “The line-up has been different for almost every show depending on which arrangements I thought would be best for the atmosphere. Some shows I played alone; some with bass, clarinet, and backing vocals; some with the addition of drums, cello and piano. We've played shows really selectively throughout the last few years—just sticking to shows that I thought sounded really interesting. Like, I'd rather play these songs for people in their bedrooms or in a field at night than on a three band bill at a bar.” In an industry fixated on striking while the iron is hot, getting an artist in front of as many people in as short of a time as possible, Clevelandʼs insistence on atmosphere over arbitrary numbers is a bold move. Oh Man, Cover The Groundʼs softly-stated melodies and breezy air operates on itʼs own sense of time. Though the songs still settle comfortably into three-minute parcels, their gestation bucked at the convention of pop musicʼs stringent time format. “I'm really into meandering, fingerpicked open-tuned acoustic guitar, like John Fahey and Robbie Basho,” says Cleveland. “I started playing guitar in that style during a year right before I moved to Seattle when I was lonely and bummed out in the San Fernando Valley and found solace in spending long afternoons fingerpicking slow moving improvisations.” This casualness is evident in the music—you can hear it in the airy ambience of album opener “Butter & Eggs”, the gentle piano and strings accompaniment on the title track, the particularly Fahey-esque explorations of “Itching Around” and “SPATM”. But even the timeline of the albumʼs development seems to defy the ephemeral haste that permeates so much contemporary music. The bulk of Oh Man, Cover The Ground was recorded in Shanaʼs basement. “I wanted it to sound casual and kind of loose like my favorite folk albums, so we didn't practice much before recording and a few of the musicians were playing the songs for the first time.”

BIO Rachel Grimes is a pianist, composer, and arranger based in Kentucky – most renowned for her work in Rachel's, the groundbreaking chamber-rock ensemble that introduced an entire generation of underground rock fans to the unexpected similarities and appeal of neoclassical music. Grimes has toured the world as a solo pianist, and as a collaborator with chamber ensembles such as Portland Cello Project, astrïd, Cicada, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta trio, and Orchestra Kandinskij. Unhurried, at times fleeting, and stretching into the sky, The Clearing is a winding path of transient moments exploring personal memory, relationships, and mystery from a deeply internal place. The music is a wide spectrum of textures in strings, harp, piano, woodwinds, and percussion. Following Book of Leaves (2009), the Marion County 1938 DVD/EP (2011), the Compound Leaves EP (2013), and an album with King’s Daughters & Sons (2011), this new full-length album reveals a broad new chapter for Rachel Grimes. Several composed pieces evolved from improvisation, such as “In the Vapor”, “The Clearing”, and “Further Foundation”. Others include captured improvisation: album highlight “The Herald”, recorded live with Jacob Duncan on saxophone and Helen Money on cello, and “The Air at Night”, a late-night meditation at a recording session in Antwerp. The title track, “The Clearing”, was recorded with members of the Amsterdam Sinfonietta following a series of performances for CrossLinx Festival in spring of 2013. After the joy of working together, Grimes proposed a long-distance recording session. Evolving from a single repeated piano note, “The Clearing” begins tense and dissonant with the string trio and piano eventually arriving at a moment of relief and grace – a light in the forest – and then returning again to the material of the opening. “Transverse Plane” was designed for SITI Company of New York for an actor training stage exercise. In two sections, the piece uses a pre-existing architecture of tempo and underlying compositional structure. The first part – “Vertical” – is a driving, orchestral texture of strings, harp, piano, oboe and saxophone with Kyle Crabtree (Shipping News) on mixed percussion. The second half – “Horizontal” – unfolds from a mist of strings with slow-moving chords and features Christian Frederickson (Rachel's) in an angular and expressive viola solo. Inspired by the wind and sky, “The Airs” feature violinist Scott Moore. Written with a single theme and mode, the suite becomes a connective tissue for the album’s various textures. In perhaps the album's most vital collaboration, Scott Morgan (aka LOSCIL) provides the delicate processing and additional depth of field that invites outsiders to enter this fluid space for their own experience.

MARTIN NEWELL
TEATIME ASSORTMENT 2xLP/1xCD • Captured Tracks’ first release of Newell’s work under his own name after releasing a total of 11 albums in 3 volumes as Cleaners from Venus • 2xLP comes in two printed inner sleeves featuring annotated lyrics and a “Letter to the Listener” written by Newell himself
Since before he was even able to play an instrument, Martin Newell was messing around with home-recordings. Having grown up in the Far East, Newell returned to his home of England at age 13 with just a little 3-inch spool tape-recorder and his first guitar. At age 14 he wrote his first song, not even knowing any chords. His song writing continued through is teens and into his 20s, when he purchased a Sony reel-to-reel recorder and 12 string guitar. It is this early songwriting that led him working with a wide variety of musicians, recording in beautiful studios and forming his many projects such as Cleaners from Venus and Brotherhood of Lizards. But it was this early songwriting and recording that led him to find that he was happiest when recording by himself, with minimal equipment. As Newell often says, “Actually, I preferred the demos”.

So Stressed initially began in Sacramento, CA as a largely improvisational noise project that included the band’s three members (Morgan Fox, Andrew Garcia and Kenneth Draper). Over time, the lineup was refined and their sound coalesced into what’s heard on ‘Unlawful Trade,’ a technically meticulous but anxiety ridden and sometimes terrifying cry which calls to mind everything from Q and Not U to No Trend and the Minutemen. At times, Fox’s lyrics bring to mind the emotional distress and social reservation seen in Wire and Wall of Voodoo.
RELEASE DATE: MAY 26, 2015 GENRE: POST-HARDCORE/NOISE The fact that their sound is so violent and tense as to be physically disarming is almost deceptive; the members of So Stressed are kind, conscientious and smart young men. Writing this album took more than two years (and recording took more than six months) due to a common habit of throwing away fullyformed songs deemed to be even slightly less than perfect. All this was done with no goal in mind— if no one wanted to release it, Fox says, “we were just going to delete it.” Honor Press could not be more pleased to offer this as our first release.

MAGNETIC SOUTH
Thee Tsunamis
Saturday Night Sweetheart LP/CD
More street-grit than surfside, Thee Tsunamis are a rock’n’roll joyride with hellcat weed queens at the wheel. On their debut full-length Saturday Night Sweetheart, the Midwest-turf trio—Betsy (guitar), Jenna (bass) and Sharlene (drums)—blend girl-group bubblegum with feral punk, hugging every hairpen turn of Kim Fowley’s twisted, trashbucket heart along the way. RIP. Saturday Night Sweetheart, with its jagged harmonies over fuzz-crusted pop hooks, marries the New York Dolls’ gutter-glam attitude with the sound of Brill Building teen-sploitation, to a much bloodier effect. From heart-in-a-blender tales and drag-race party anthems to the title track’s proto-punk pyrotechnics, these 12 tunes are as catchy as they are cutting and together they tell a story as old as time: what the men don’t know, the little girls understand. Like Thee Tsunamis’ demo release A Goodbad Man Is Hard To Find (2013) and horror-concept EP Delirium and Dark Waters (2014), Saturday Night Sweetheart (May, 2015) was recorded to tape in the basement of Magnetic South and has the signature fidelity of a subterranean rock’n’roll echo-chamber. Plate reverb and tape delay spin some witchy doowop atmospherics between slasher guitar riffs and nerve rattling rhythms. Saturday Night Sweetheart is a date you don’t want to break. Animal Collective feat. Vashti Bunyan Prospect Hummer Animal Collective’s ‘Prospect Hummer’ EP, previously only available on CD and digitally, is making its way to vinyl almost exactly ten years since its original release on FatCat. ‘Prospect Hummer’ was the last release to see Animal Collective operating in a largely acoustic singer-songwriter / freak-folk mode, and three of the EP’s four tracks feature the sweet, distinctive vocals of cult singersongwriter Vashti Bunyan.

The idea for this EP germinated during a 2003 tour, which saw Animal Collective (playing as an Avey Tare / Panda Bear duo) supporting Four Tet across the UK. Having long been huge fans of her sole album at that time (the rediscovered 1970 gem, ‘Just Another Diamond Day’), Animal Collective happened to meet Vashti when the tour passed through Edinburgh. Following this meeting, ideas were hatched and conversations began, culminating in the group selecting these three beautiful songs for Vashti to make a home in. ‘Prospect Hummer’ was recorded by their friend Rusty Santos (who co-produced ‘Sung Tongs’) at Idle Luxury studios in London over three days in April 2004, while the band were were embarking on their second UK / European tour around their seminal ‘Sung Tongs’ album. The ‘Prospect Hummer’ EP was eventually released a year later in early May 2005, just a handful of months before their brilliant breakthrough album, ‘Feels’.
TRACKLISTING
Largely acoustic-based, the record centers around the three harmonized vocal tracks, ‘It’s You’, ‘Prospect Hummer’, and ‘I Remember Learning How To Dive’. Weaving their luscious, multi-layered web around Vashti’s singing, these three tracks feature Animal members Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Deakin. A fourth track, the instrumental ‘Baleen Sample’ was completed later in the year, and includes samples from band member Geologist, who was absent from the Four Tet tour.

The rawest, DIY gospel ever resurrected. The West Side of Chicago was just an annex of the deep rural South for Gene Autry Cash and his flock of recent Old Dominion transplants looking to cut their fiery, unadorned sounds indelibly to plastic. His Jade label absorbed those God-fearing artists: family bands with wailing kids and barely amateur groups sourced from local parishes, infused with reverberations of country and western and deep soul. Glinting authenticity shines from every track like a diamond in the unpolished rough—each group completely convinced that salvation comes through song.

Black Baron Abject Skin TRACK LISTING: 1. Twisting Fate 2. Devil’s Touch 3. Bitter Kiss 4. Canary In a Mineshaft 5. Divine Chains 6. Fluorescent Light 7. Watch Me Sleep 8. Sullen Skies 9. Life In Vain 10. Abject Skin POINTS OF INTEREST: • Debut album from rising, young act based in Hamilton, Ontario • Shared stages with Perfect Pussy, Destruction Unit, Gauntlet Hair, and more • Considered a “must-see” live act by media outlets in Ontario and throughout Canada There’s an intoxicating feeling inside Hamilton, Ontario, and Black Baron has managed to distill the essence of that feeling into a potent brew. In the same way that the films of David Lynch are sewn together from the fabric that holds together dreams, Black Baron creates songs from the fabric of Hamilton. While the local hardcore scene has been cutting records reminiscent of the city’s steel mills since the early 1990’s, Black Baron, a band comprised of some of the city’s hardcore elite, creates the soundtrack to a different side of the city. Unlike the punishing steelfucker sound of Hamilton hardcore, Black Baron’s music is rooted in a deep sense of melancholy, one that does not seek destruction, but rather seeps its way into the collective consciousness following the potentiality of destruction or abandonment. Coming from a city devastated by economic decline following the shrinking of its industrial sector, Black Baron evokes the haunting memory of the closure and loss of Hamilton landmarks at a time when the city appears to be on a cultural upswing. To ascribe a genre stamp to Black Baron’s music feels like sacrilege. While on paper the band’s sound could loosely be described as post-punk, the dreamy, nearly aquatic tones, dazzling riffage, and unabashed lyrical melodrama add dynamic elements to their sound that are typically missing from that of their peers. The band’s debut full-length album Abject Skin, which is chock full of new material along with refined versions of tracks taken from their 2013 tape Divine Chains, is a representation of a band sticking to their hometown roots all while carving their own vicious path.

Shopping Consumer Complaints Shopping are propulsive bass lines, primitive disco-not-disco drums and guitar lines sharp as broken glass. The band was formed in 2012 by members Rachel Aggs (guitar), Billy Easter (bass) and Andrew Milk (drums), who’ve all done time in a plethora of notable UK DIY bands including Trash Kit and Wet Dog. They pull from a well of 70’s post-punk with a voraciousness seldom seen these days, bringing to mind the jagged aggression of Gang of Four, the voracious yelp of The Slits and the dance inducing thrust of Delta 5 and ESG.

The band’s self-released debut LP, put out via their own MILK records in the UK has received whole-hearted acclaim, selling out their 1000 piece run in just a few months by hand delivering them to top-tier UK shops, who couldn’t seem to get enough of their groove riding, tough talking, life-loving post-punk funk. Now the band have signed on to FatCat, with a new LP on the way later in 2015 and to introduce the band stateside we’re making their self-released album available here for the first time. The band are tirelessly committed to taking their sound to new audiences and spreading the Shopping gospel, securing impressive gigs along the way including main support for ESG and Gang Of Four as well as main support on Merchandise’s 2014 UK tour. Fully entrenched in the vibrant UK DIY community Shopping are all about being as productive and creative as possible and as such theyve been described by the NME as a “band you need to hear.”
