ABOUT THE ALBUM ANOHNI has collaborated with Oneohtrix Point Never and Hudson Mohawke on the artist's latest work, HOPELESSNESS. Late last year, ANOHNI, the lead singer from Antony and the Johnsons, released “4 DEGREES", a bombastic dance track celebrating global boiling and collapsing biodiversity. Rather than taking refuge in good intentions, ANOHNI gives voice to the attitude sublimated within her behavior as she continues to consume in a fossil fuel-based economy. ANOHNI released “4 DEGREES,” the first single from her upcoming album HOPELESSNESS, to support the Paris climate conference this past December. The song emerged earlier last year in live performances. As discussed by ANOHNI: "I have grown tired of grieving for humanity, and I also thought I was not being entirely honest by pretending that I am not a part of the problem," she said. “’4 DEGREES' is kind of a brutal attempt to hold myself accountable, not just valorize my intentions, but also reflect on the true impact of my behaviors.” The album, HOPELESSNESS, to be released world wide on May 6th 2016, is a dance record with soulful vocals and lyrics addressing surveillance, drone warfare, and ecocide. A radical departure from the singer’s symphonic collaborations, the album seeks to disrupt assumptions about popular music through the collision of electronic sound and highly politicized lyrics. ANOHNI will present select concerts in Europe, Australia and the US in support of HOPELESSNESS this Summer.

As If Apart, the long-awaited sequel to Chris Cohen’s 2012 soft psych garden of unearthly alter-pop earworms and studio-sonic delights Overgrown Path, follows on its predecessor with another bittersweet ensemble of dreamy, complex songs. Pushing the idiosyncrasies of Cohen’s melodic and rhythmic approach into even more fractured, shifting spaces, As if Apart unsettles lazy pop conventions, upending jaded heads and hearts with an expansive, moody psychedelia. Where Overgrown Path plunged within, As if Apart voyages out. And up.

Sometimes as a leader, sometimes as a sideman and collaborator; sometimes as an invisible musician but you’ve heard him: the chest-high bass drum thump, the tightly paired flight of guitars in odd harmony, the disorienting shift in time and texture that resolves itself into song. Chris Cohen has plied the inside and outside folds of pop musical possibility since at least 1978, when he first set infant drumstick to skin at the tender age of three, initiating decades of sonic experimentation across multiple bands and nearly a dozen recordings. Cohen’s songwriting isn’t so much disjunctive as subjunctive, asking “what if,” playing against the expected and building suspense, breaking like waves or the patterns at the edges of things. Chris makes music with the patience of a gardener: he went out and collected a backyard’s worth of thorny succulents, took them home and cultivated them like so. They are modular plants — cut one little piece, stick it in the ground, give it time. Come back and find it branching, breaking and replanting itself into tangle and form. You notice yourself changed too. To say that this is how pop music should have turned out would be nostalgic -- a misapprehension of time, pop, history and our place within those structures -- what we could say is that this is how pop music has turned out alongside itself --how it has become beside itself - as if apart.

JULIANNA BARWICK WILL CATALOG #: DOC110 RELEASE DATE: MAY 6, 2016 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 50
ABOUT THE ALBUM Julianna Barwick’s revelatory third full-length, Will, is the Brooklyn experimental artist’s most surprising left turn to date. Conceived and self-produced over the past year in a variety of locations, the compelling Will departs from the weighty lightness of 2013’s Nepenthe. If Nepenthe conjured images of gentle fog rolling over desolate mountains, then Will is a late afternoon thunderstorm, a cathartic collision of sharp and soft textures that sounds ominous and restorative all at once.
GENRE: ELECTRONIC KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK CITY, CHICAGO, BALTIMORE, LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO/BAY AREA, SEATTLE, AUSTIN, PORTLAND
Will comes off of Barwick’s busiest period in her career to date following Nepenthe — a spate of activity that included playing piano for Yoko Ono, performing at the 25th annual Tibet House Benefit Concert alongside such kindred spirits as the Flaming Lips and Philip Glass, releasing the Rosabi EP, and delivering a reimagining of Bach's “Adagio” from Concerto In D Minor.
TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NOT AVAILABLE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
Her life over the past several years has largely been lived in transit, and as such the genesis of Will was not beholden to location; Barwick reflects on this cycle of constant motion. “You’re constantly adjusting, assimilating, and finding yourself in life-changing situations.”
VINYL NOT RETURNABLE ROSE GOLD COLORED VINYL IS LIMITED TO 2,000 COPIES WORLDWIDE
That sense of forward propulsion is largely owed to Will’s synth-heavy textures, an ingredient she was inspired to add to her vocal loop-heavy formula after demoing a new prototype analog sequencer for Moog. Another new wrinkle Will introduces in Barwick’s sound: Mas Ysa’s Thomas Arsenault, who lends his richly complex vocals to “Same” and “Someway.” The beguiling, beautifully complicated Will is the latest proof yet of Barwick’s irresistibly engaging talent as a composer and vocalist.

Klaus Johann Grobe continue to avoid easy classification with “Spagat der Liebe”, the follow-up to their mind-scrambling 2013 debut album “Im Sinne der Zeit ”. Said debut was an easy to love, but hard to pin down fusion of krautrock, disco, Tropicalia, post-punk and experimental music that garnered rave reviews both in the USA & abroad. In between numerous European festival tours & opening slots for Temples, Moon Duo & the Growlers, the band holed up in their Swiss studio compound to record “Spagat der Liebe” in the autumn of 2015. The sinister, late-night grooves present of their debut have been tempered a bit, in favor of somewhat sunnier dispositions, calling to mind an ecstatic party somewhere in sunny Ibiza. The albums title translates to “balancing act of love” & many of the tunes on “Spagat der Liebe” feel like love songs, either to a significant other, a mood, a feeling, or the dance floor - whichever you choose. The overall vibe of the album acknowledges the tenuous push & pull love can have on a person, not unlike the way a great DJ can make you feel ecstasy & romance all under an umbrella of glittering lights. Tunes like album opener “Ein Guter Tag” & first single “ Wo Sind” feel like a warm up, preparing the listener for the four-on-the-floor propulsion of “Rosen des Abschieds” - a song tailor-made to sweat to. Elsewhere the fragile “Heut Abend nur ” (”Tonight Only ”) & the synth-tickled “Ohne Mich” - which is closest the band has come to an honest to goodness pop tune - guides the listener by the hand towards floor fillers like “Geschichten aus erster Hand” and the absolutely DEVASTATING groove of “Liebe am Strand”, which is anchored by a rubber y bass groove & a killer flute solo that takes it over the event horizon. “Spagat der Liebe” finds the band continuing to challenge listener ’s expectations, eschewing overt stylistic tropes in favor of a feeling; keeping love, passion, ecstacy, melancholy, desire & affection in a nimble balance. “Spagat der Liebe” is issued on compact disc & vinyl, with full-color inner sleeve (with lyrics) & artwork co-designed by band member Sevi Landolt.

Joanna Brouk’s little-known body of work exists at the nexus between ambient, new age, drone, and classical minimalism—stark in its simplicity, lush in its expanse. Studying under Robert Ashley and Terry Riley at the fabled Mills College Center For Contemporary Music before graduating into the margins of the 70s bay area new music scene, Ms. Brouk blazed her own trail well outside of the musical establishment to create uncompromising electronic and acoustic work of sleek beauty and primal power. Describing herself as less a composer than a channel, she took her cues from the frequencies of the natural world and the talents of collaborators like Maggi Payne and Bill Maraldo. Hearing Music collects for the first time the deepest cuts from her beguiling and rare cassette releases and her archive of previously unreleased recordings.
“I realized that, in many instances, it didn’t matter what you said, it mattered how you said it: the tone of the voice, the rhythm, the sound…. Because sound has an incredible effect on other people, it can make them dance, put them into trances, it can control emotions by a certain pitch, a certain depth.” – Joanna Brouk

Maintaining Psychic Temple's affinity for nuance and delicate minimalism, 'III' exhibits a new directness centered around Schlarb's agile guiding voice. While the album places his unfolding vocal melodies and narratives in the foreground, 'III' subverts easy categorization by sustaining the collaborative, exploratory spirit of 'Psychic Temple' and 'II'. Culled from sessions recorded at home in Los Angeles and the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama - 'III' includes contributions and performances from Spooner Oldham (Neil Young, Bob Dylan), David Hood (J.J. Cale, Aretha Franklin), Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges), Avi Buffalo, Nedelle Torrisi (Sufjan Stevens), Elliot Bergman (Wild Belle, NOMO), Dave Easley (Brian Blade Fellowship) and many more. Coming together quickly and intuitively, the album was mixed over three days with Ronan Chris Murphy (King Crimson). HOMETOWN / Long Beach KEY MARKETS / Long Beach, QUOTES / “Making the Saint has an inclusive, panoramic feel — like a wide-armed hug.” SPIN “Psychic Temple II is an album that glides on warm breezes, an unflappably congenial and agreeable experience.” – Consequence of Sound "Other-worldly sounds of singular vision and exceptional beauty.” – All About Jazz SELLING POINTS / • Includes cabal of legendary performers. • National press campaign by Terror Bird. • National tour in summer.

RELEASE BIO Ultimate Oceans is the follow-up to 2012’s Coastlines, a record that spent a couple weeks in the top 20 of the CMJ Top 200 Charts after having tracks featured by Noisey, Insound, and Consequence of Sound. Lead single “Galaxies” features FAWNN’s signature hooky boy/girl harmonies, melodic guitar interplay and undeniable rhythm grooves, but like many of the more immediate cuts on Ultimate Oceans, the band has added a John-Hughes-era-credit-sequence chorus that is sure to have you fumbling for the “repeat” button. The Ultimate Oceans vinyl release features a spliff-and-headphone-friendly track sequence, complete with lock out grooves so you can continue your trip right on into next week, if you want. And, it comes with a digital download coupon, in case you decide to go back to work at some point and want to keep the party rolling. The Ultimate Oceans CD release includes four remixes by Zach Shipps (Electric Six, Ladytron, Belle Ghoul, Midnight Juggernauts), along with album outtake “Pixelfire,” which is Such. A. Jam. UPC LP

Shit Robot What Follows Marcus Lambkin aka Shit Robot returns with his third full length album for DFA Records, entitled What Follows. The album follows Lambkin’s previous long-players, From The Cradle To The Rave (2010) and We Got A Love (2014), which drew plaudits from the likes of The Guardian and Pitchfork, and featured Reggie Watts and James Murphy among the array of contributors. The album was recorded at Marcus’ home studio in Stuttgart and various New York studios, then mixed over the course of 11 intense & coffee-fuelled days in DFA label mate Juan Maclean’s New Hampshire studio. Citing ‘drum machines’ as a key influence, Lambkin has taken the Shit Robot sound into new areas on this record, with most of the tracks the results of improvisation with various analog machines both new and old. Beginning the process in Stuttgart, Lambkin took the drum loops and basslines he’d been working on to NYC, where he spent some time playing around with Holy Ghost’s modular synth, before taking what he had to keyboard wizard Morgan Wiley of Midnight Magic and Tippy Toes As with those previous albums, the Dublin-born producer has enlisted the help of a stellar cast of guest vocalists to enrich the experience, with previous collaborators Alexis Taylor, Museum of Love and Nancy Whang returning alongside newer guests Jay Green and leftfield fellow Dubliner New Jackson. Taylor turns in two breathtaking vocal performances on lead single ‘End Of The Trail’ and album opener ‘In Love’; Museum of Love lend the album title track an air of what could have been made in the two months in between the death of Joy Divison and the birth of New Order; and Nancy Whang gave such a strong vocal for ‘Lose Control’ that Lambkin and Maclean threw out the existing track and recorded the backing along with the vocal in one take, which the two producers working the machines live.

YONI WOLF of WHY? & SERENGETI
(who is occasionally Kenny Dennis)
overview : When we last left David Cohn (Serengeti) and Yoni Wolf, it was 2011—the year of the Rabbit, the year of Occupy Wall Street, and their first collaborative album, Serengeti’s Family & Friends. Somewhere amidst Charlie Sheen’s meltdown and Oprah’s last episode, the duo dropped one of the most simultaneously bleak and hilarious song cycles ever conceived, replete with tales of bigamy, reinventions of self, addiction, and disgraced UFC fighters. Woe leavened by whimsy. A half-decade later, Serengeti and Wolf (principal songsmith of the band WHY?), have returned with Testarossa. Due in May 2016 on Joyful Noise Recordings, it soundtracks a script the pair penned while on tour together. Every song conceptualizes the saga of star-crossed lovers, Maddy and Davy. After Davy got Maddy pregnant, he proposed. The ceremony was a lovely, traditional affair. Shortly thereafter, Davy’s band took off and he rode the wave of garage rock revival. But alas, soon their music went out of vogue, and the tastemakers left them for dead. No blog would touch them with a ten-word post, but Davy never gave up. Music was the only life he knew, the only way he could pay the bills and process the pain. So he took any gig he could get, canvassing the road, hoping to ignite his career at sparsely attended shows from Hoboken to Hamburg, Germany. Times were tough. Davy barely had any income to send home to Maddy and their now two children. With her husband on the road, she was forced to take a job as a cocktail waitress. Slightly debased, and getting hit on all the time, she eventually took solace in the arms of Davy’s old high school best friend/ex-bandmate. Testarossa captures this disarray and emotional turbulence, cold Decembers and dark memories. On opening song, “Umar Rashid,” Serengeti (as Davy) tells the listeners that he’s as troubled as can be. “Allegheny” finds him fretting over melancholic pianos, nostalgically assuaging his own guilt, mentioning the model Testarossa he brought home for his children. Yoni croons, “I told you once, I told you twice, sweetie pie, I’m cold as ice… I have to catch this flight.” The sentiment distills the slow decay of the album. It’s a high-concept examination of lives crumbling. The despair of a lovable underdog who chased his dreams so relentlessly that he lost those he loved the most. He misses his kids, but still lives a debauched life away. As always, there’s the undercurrent of sadness and regrets, sin and repentance, the juxtaposition of bleak reality, the surreal, and dark humor. It’s a dirty, weird and brilliant album that becomes more stark and visceral with every listen. This is love and willful destruction sharing a beer and a shot—the soundtrack to wrong decisions and crooked twists of fate. Yoni & Geti. Testarossa.

Jaye Bartell’s move to Brooklyn, NY in 2013, as well as the work Spalding Gray and Eileen Myles, heavily influence the content presented on his latest record, Light Enough. In his own words, “Resettlement is an implicit theme in much of the writing, and the process of making the album itself was an act of resettlement, finding out where I lived as a means of coming to live there.” Bartell spent about a year secluded in his Greenpoint bedroom, piecing together the intricate tunes and gentle melodies that furnish his new record. “I wrote and developed the songs on Light Enough alone, again for about a year, mostly on a bed in a room the size of a fish tank. I started playing a nylon string classical guitar for the first time and wrote all the music on that instrument.” The songs on Light Enough encompass the processes of aspiration, pursuit, and fulfillment, if only to find that “[P]eople don’t change. They only stand more revealed,” as Charles Olson writes in Maximus Poems. In the album opener, “G & Me,” Bartell sings of the joyful illusions of escape, “a whole new life” that’s recognized, without bitterness as a “whole new lie.” “Light Enough” is a declaration of sufficiency, as if to say, Let this be enough then, and if it isn’t now, then it never will be: “I’m ready to come down,” he sings. The record as a whole takes as a kind of informal edict a line from Eileen Myles’ Chelsea Girls: “I have waited all my life for permission. I feel it growing in my breast. A war is storming and it is behind me and I am moving my forces into light.”

BIO
In the year 2000 – shortly after releasing what would become his most iconic album, I See A Darkness – Will Oldham aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy retreated to his family’s farmhouse with the majority that I See A Darkness lineup in tow to record a half dozen covers of some of Oldham’s favorite songs. The track listing is, as expected, inspired and eclectic: John Phillips, PJ Harvey, Bill Withers, The Renderers, John Holt, and Tim McGraw. Bonny Billy’s renditions are equally inspired and eclectic, ranging from slow-burning uneasiness to uncharacteristic jubilance. Originally released exclusively on limited edition CD in the pre-MP3 era, More Revery was gone before iTunes existed, and has not been available in any format since. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Temporary Residence Ltd., we are honored to reissue this essential piece of the Bonny Billy canon – now expanded to include rare live versions of the entire album!
PETER BRODERICK Music For Falling From Trees
ABOUT THIS RECORD “In late 2008, Adrienne Hart contacted me about scoring her new work, FALLING FROM TREES. In Adrienne's words, "The piece is set in a psychiatric hospital and centered around one man's struggle to retain his identity in the most extreme of circumstances." There are four dancers in the piece. One male playing the patient, and three female hospital workers. I had been making music for a variety of film projects, but the thought of scoring a dance was very exciting to me. I was on tour at the time, so I wasn't able to start writing the music until I had a break in early January. The dance premiered on January 21st, so I had about three weeks to create the score. I camped out up in the top of my father's barn with some minimal recording equipment, my violin and viola, and an old broken piano. Given the time constraints, I approached the music in a very open way. Rather than sit down and try to compose something, I just set up a microphone and started playing. After coming up with a couple of themes on the piano, I started recording, using those small themes and improvising around them. Most of the sections have a small core that is composed, and then the rest is improvised. Luckily for me this method seemed to work. I would work all day and then send a sketch over to Adrienne, and every time her response was positive. So in this way we worked very well together. I give my hugest thanks to Adrienne for trusting me to create the music for her wonderful work. Adrienne told me from the beginning she was looking for a score of piano and strings. So I decided to take this literally and make a rule not to use any other instruments. In the script it called for the sound of a ticking clock. I made this sound by tapping on the body of the violin with my fingernails. The sound of an electric shock given to the patient is depicted by a quick, distorted piano chord. And all other droning and bass tones were made by extending and processing violin and/or piano tones, etc. Thank you very much for listening.” – Peter Broderick

PRESS QUOTES “Broderick's score is surpassingly lovely...” – Pitchfork "This effect on the listener is the music’s greatest achievement. Even without the accompanying dance performance, each phase of this piece articulates a sense of internal struggle and sketches an atmosphere of repression in a sterilised world.” – Drowned in Sound “Broderick succeeds in composing music that, while certainly melancholic, possesses a hopeful, nostalgic, and even playful quality at times.” – Tiny Mix Tapes

A child of the internet, Doprah was born from an online collaboration between Steven Marr and Indira Force, resulting in the self-titled EP followed by a number of cinematic music videos (including the J-pop inspired YouTube comment hotbed 'Stranger People'), sold out venues across their homeland, dipped their toes in Australian waters and journeyed to the other side of the world to play New York's CMJ Festival. Wasting sees the now six-piece band’s ethereal, trip-pop sound reach a new level of fidelity and cohesion, with credit due to the band’s principal producer Steven Marr. Liquid synthesizers and cavernous programmed beats are fused with traditional live instruments to create a trendless sound, uniquely Doprah. Floating among the instrumentation is Indira Force – a musician able to transmit emotion like few vocalists can, sometimes forgoing lyrics altogether in the Björk/Elizabeth Fraser vein of vocal envelopepushing. Doprah’s - Wasting is a visionary debut - a powerful statement of intent crafted by an unusually talented young band on a tiny island at the bottom of the world. "Beautifully understated compositions rooted in Radiohead's family of theremin synths and the weaving texture of male and female vocals.” - Pigeons and Planes “Doprah have drawn comparisons to Portishead and The xx which aren't entirely unwarranted.” - Brooklyn Vegan

After ten years, legendary avant guitarist Loren Connors returns to his much acclaimed and beloved The Departing of a Dream series. Initially based loosely as tribute to Miles Davis’ masterwork “He Loved Him Madly,” Connors delves further into the inspiration to explore melody as a slow-moving spectrum of shades projected against a fragile, often decaying ambiance. Volume Five continues the theme, as Connors coaxes complex blues mutations and wide swathes of distant vibrating tones -not unlike the expressionistic cry of Miles’ horn. The flutter of voices and din that seep in between the sustained notes transform into a choir as only Connors can lead. This mini-album is presented as a 10-inch, housed in a purple sleeve with metallic ink and download coupon. Audio mastering by Taylor Deupree at 12k and vinyl mastering by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering. One-time edition of 500 copies.
