Constructed entirely of archive film, Atomic is an impressionistic kaleidoscope of the horrors of our nuclear times – protest marches, Cold War sabre-rattling, Chernobyl and Fukishima – but also the sublime beauty of the atomic world, and how x-rays and MRI scans have improved human lives. Mogwai's soundtrack encapsulates the nightmare of the nuclear age, but its dreamlike qualities too. It is the latest in the band's series of impressive soundtracks and scores, following acclaimed albums Les Revenants (The Returned) and Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait. Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite says: "The Atomic soundtrack is one of the most intense and fulfilling projects we've taken on as a band. Ever since we went to Hiroshima to play and visited the peace park this has been a subject very close to us. The end results, both the film score and the record are pieces I'm extremely proud of." The vinyl format features an eye-popping full-color old-style tip-on gatefold jacket with matte and gloss spot varnishes.

ABOUT THE ALBUM Ask Mitski Miyawaki about happiness and she'll warn you: “Happiness fucks you.” It's a lesson that's been writ large into the New Yorker's gritty, outsider-indie for years, but never so powerfully as on her newest album, Puberty 2. “Happiness is up, sadness is down, but one's almost more destructive than the other,” she says. “When you realize you can't have one without the other, it's possible to spend periods of happiness just waiting for that other wave.” On Puberty 2, that tension is palpable: a both beautiful and brutal romantic hinterland, in which one of America’s new voices hits a brave new stride. PRESS QUOTES "No one else can make shattering sound like such an act of strength.“ - Stereogum “Her songs build a quiet fury with lyrics that pulverize the heart while still making a break-up seem almost beautiful.” - Paste Magazine

John Carpenter Halloween b/w Escape from New York
Much of the power of the best films by the cult director John Carpenter can be attributed to their use of music — music that, more often than not, was composed and performed by Carpenter himself. What began as a necessity for the low-budget productions by Carpenter became a major part of his aesthetic, and established him as a pioneering figure in genre-film score work as well as electronic music in general. Now, flanked by his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, and with two albums (Lost Themes and Lost Themes II) of nonsoundtrack material under his belt, Carpenter has decided to revisit some of his most beloved themes. Halloween was Carpenter’s breakthrough as a feature film director. Made for $300,000, it was the most profitable independent movie of its day, and to date has spawned several sequels, becoming an renowned franchise; its stories, characters and scores known the world over. It tells the story of Michael Myers, who brutally massacred his sister 15 years ago and escapes from from a mental hospital on Halloween night to relive his grisly crime again and again. The film’s pulse is the eerie 5/4 piano theme that Carpenter places at the center of its pivotal scenes. It’s a classic theme that stands tall alongside Psycho, Jaws, and The Exorcist as one of the most famous – and greatest – in horror movie history. The dystopian action thriller Escape from New York is another Carpenter classic, uniting the director with his greatest muse, Kurt Russell. In the film, Manhattan has been turned into a maximum security prison whose population consists of street punk gang escapees, and Russell’s Snake Plissken must rescue the President, whose plane has crashed on the island. The minimal synthesizer theme that tracks Plissken’s journey across this ravaged vision of NYC is one of Carpenter’s defining works as a composer. This double A sided 12" release includes the themes to Halloween and Escape from New York, newly re-recorded by Carpenter and his Lost Themes bandmates. These new masters have never been previously released. The 12" is available as a deluxe, mylar-sleeve black vinyl and a limited-edition picture disc, both with new artwork by Jay Shaw. May this release serve as a bridge between the Horror Master’s legendary past and his remarkable present.

John Carpenter Assault on Precinct 13 b/w The Fog
Assault on Precinct 13 was the first feature film Carpenter made after film school, and he made it partially as an urban reimagining of Rio Bravo, a film by his idol, Howard Hawks. In Carpenter’s movie, a soon-to-be-closed police precinct is placed under siege by a gang who have taken a blood oath to kill someone inside. Assault is a classic, not least of all because it has perhaps Carpenter’s best-loved theme. The theme’s main synthesizer line, partly inspired by the score to Dirty Harry and Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” is catchy and dread-inducing in equal measure. Carpenter’s theme for The Fog is one of his finest, and creepiest. In the film, a weather-beaten old fisherman tells an ancient tale of betrayal and death to fascinated children as they huddle together by their campfire. As a piece of driftwood in a child’s hands glows with spectral light, an eerie fog envelops the bay, and from its midst emerge dripping demonic victims of a century old shipwreck, seeking revenge. The spooky synthesizer tone in Carpenter’s composition evokes the advance of the fog itself, helping to make this a quintessential horror score for a classic horror movie. This 12" release includes the themes to Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog, newly rerecorded by Carpenter and his Lost Themes bandmates. May it serve as a bridge between the Horror Master’s legendary, still relevant past and his remarkable present.

Hailu Mergia & Dahlak Band Wede Harer Guzo Hailu Mergia & Dahlak Band’s Wede Harer Guzo is the third release on Awesome Tapes From Africa for Ethiopian keyboard and accordion maestro. In the years since Shemonmuanaye, Mergia has revamped his touring career, playing festivals and clubs worldwide, including a recent tour supporting Beirut. By 1978, Addis Ababa’s nightlife was facing challenges. The ruling Derg regime imposed curfews, banning citizens from the streets after midnight until 6:00 am. But that didn’t stop some people from dancing and partying through the night. Bands would play from evening until daybreak and people would stay at the clubs until curfew was lifted in the morning. ! One key denizen of Addis’ musical golden age, Hailu Mergia, was preparing a follow-up to his seminal Tche Belew LP with the famed Walias Band. It was the band’s only full-length record and it had been a success. But his Hilton house band colleagues were a bit tied up recording cassettes with different vocalists. Still Mergia, amidst recording and gigs with the Walias, was also eager to make another recording of his instrumental-focused arrangements. So he went to the nearby Ghion Hotel, another upmarket outpost with a popular nightclub. Dahlak Band was the house band at Ghion at the time. Together they made this tape Wede Harer Guzo right there in the club during the band’s afternoon rehearsal meetings, with sessions lasting three days.! Dahlak Band catered to a slightly more youthful, local audience, while Mergia’s main gig with the Walias at Addis' swankiest hotel had a mixed audience that included wealthy Ethiopians, foreign diplomats and older folks from abroad. Therefore, their sets featured lighter fare during dinnertime and a less rollicking selection of jazz and r&b. Meanwhile, Dahlak was known more for the mainly soul and Amharic jams they served up for hours two nights a week to a younger crowd. ! Mergia released Wede Harer Guzo (“Journey to Harer,” a city in eastern Ethiopia) with Sheba Music Shop, which was located in the Piazza district but has long since shut down. His cassette copy is the only known source we could find. Jessica Thompson at Coast Mastering managed to restore the recording to clean up layers of hiss, flutter and distorted frequencies, made worse by years of storage. Although there are some remaining sonic artifacts of the era’s recording and cassette duplicating quality, this reissue captures the band’s inimitable vibe. ! Recalling the audience’s positive reaction to Wede Harer Guzo’s novel arrangements, he says it sold well and found many fans. However, as no trace of the tape can be found online, there’s no indication as to why the cassette appears largely forgotten until now. ! AWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICA! PO BOX 986! Hear the document of one man’s passion crossing over into obsession. Chicago radio disc jockey and soul archivist Bob Abrahamian was deeply devoted to celebrating and documenting unknown Chicagoland group harmony music. Upon his untimely passing in 2014, he left behind hundreds of radio programs and a daunting collection of 35,000 carefully-selected 45s. Our collection borrows its title from Abrahamian’s long-running and acclaimed WHPK radio show, and it spins a tale that’s cautionary, inspiring, and set to the sounds of the impossible-to-find tracks that made Bob Abrahamian’s on-air playlist and animated the radio programs that were his life’s work. Collected here are 12 artists (16 on the CD) featured on Sitting In The Park, in their own words and through the lens of our friend Bob. A decade into its limitless ambitions, Numero’s flagship Eccentric Soul series is effectively remapping the American soul diaspora. Each compilation explores, in exacting detail, another US city’s smallest time hooks and would-be world beaters tossed into the glutted big-hole record sea of the 1960s and ’70s. In Eccentric Soul’s alternate universe are motley and mishandled Motowns beyond number, and the unforgettable records that could have, and should have, and never did. Find their stories here, retold for the first time.

From Los Angeles-based artist Lucas Nathan, Jerry Paper is a highly caricatured, stranger, and less categorizable representation of his Self — fulfilling his need for a sub-versive outlet and catharsis, in general. Jerry’s songs thematically deal with matters of loneliness, transcendence, war mongering, and existential contemplations, all delivered with subtle humor. The latest full-length from Jerry Paper is Toon Time Raw! which sees itself as a continuation of Nathan’s of amoebic mission. Whereas his previous seven albums featured him alone — with his synthesizer, drum machine, and the occasional guitar — this new record features backing instrumentation from Easy Feeling Unlimited, a jazz band who have asked to remain anonymous. Though the synth sax has been traded for real brass, it’s still the same Jerry songwriting. Toon Time Raw! is a metamorphosis of Jerry’s style that nonetheless retains his characteristic wit and sentimentality. Musically, the album fills the space somewhere between jazz-rock, sophisti-pop, and psychedelia. Lyrically, the album follows a cast of anthropomorphic animals navigating their cartoon reality, facing “the quotidian aches and pains of being a Being.” Can you imagine if Martin Heidegger created Looney Tunes? Jerry already did. Digital list price: $9.98

RELEASE BIO Ultimate Oceans is the follow-up to 2012’s Coastlines, a record that spent a couple weeks in the top 20 of the CMJ Top 200 Charts after having tracks featured by Noisey, Insound, and Consequence of Sound. Lead single “Galaxies” features FAWNN’s signature hooky boy/girl harmonies, melodic guitar interplay and undeniable rhythm grooves, but like many of the more immediate cuts on Ultimate Oceans, the band has added a John-Hughes-era-credit-sequence chorus that is sure to have you fumbling for the “repeat” button. The Ultimate Oceans vinyl release features a spliff-and-headphone-friendly track sequence, complete with lock out grooves so you can continue your trip right on into next week, if you want. And, it comes with a digital download coupon, in case you decide to go back to work at some point and want to keep the party rolling. The Ultimate Oceans CD release includes four remixes by Zach Shipps (Electric Six, Ladytron, Belle Ghoul, Midnight Juggernauts), along with album outtake “Pixelfire,” which is Such. A. Jam. UPC LP

BIO If there is one constant with Parlour, it is that nothing is ever the same. For nigh two decades, the Louisville, KY experimental troupe – led by Tim Furnish of influential, defunct Louisville art-punk band, Crain – has relentlessly evolved in subtle but substantial ways. This consistent creative movement keeps the sound of Parlour forever curious, and impossible to predict. While that may make for some commercial challenges, it also makes for more compelling and mercurial music. On the band’s self-titled fourth album, Parlour pushes ferocious, dynamic guitar rock to the brink with hypnotic repetition and shifting, stabbing rhythms. In fierce Parlour fashion, the driving crunch of guitars is punctuated with shimmering buzz of synths. The difference here, though, is Parlour has shed their trademark woodwinds in favor of a leaner, heavier aesthetic. With a reduced instrumental palette and increased focus on beats and riffs, the songs are more naked and intense – equal parts crashing krautrock, and crushing prog-rock.

06. Pencils 07. Game 08. Vanta Black 09. Betrayal 10. Lust
RELEASE BIO Toronto underground staple Odonis Odonis broke out in 2011 with their scrappy, blown out debut, Hollandaze. The dynamic trio instantly began turning heads with their signature “industrial surfgaze” sound. On their Polaris Prize nominated follow up, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, Odonis Odonis masterfully crafted a sonically divergent record that pushed their sound into new territory. Odonis Odonis’ latest epic, Post Plague, delivers a powerful blend of industrial, electronic and Sci-Fi. Odonis Odonis' post-apocalyptic anthems construct scenes of sci-fi horror and saturate them with industrial strength synth beats. Dean Tzenos’ vocals sit clear and upfront, delivered with a foreboding intensity accented by his synth motifs and soundscapes. Denholm Whale’s carefully crafted bass figures / electronic percussions are strategically placed like demolition charges throughout the sonic foundations of each track that Jarod Gibson, like some futurist architect, constructs. On Post Plague, Odonis Odonis delivers the kind of hypnotic, pulsing destruction that you can’t wipe away. Post Plague inhabits that impending reality of synthetic experience which forces us to realize what we are: vulnerable, frantic creatures yearning for an authentic present / future. Jeff Goldblum, in the acclaimed motion picture The Fly, reminds us that we must take a “deep penetrating dive into the plasma pool,” and take stock of ourselves before we lose something profound. Something that may be necessary to ward off a pending anthropogenic apocalypse. Recognize and take pleasure in our fucked up place in time as we have so many new worlds possible at once.

More than just the third PAWS record, No Grace is representative of a transformative period of time in the band’s life and is the gravel-throated affirmation of that 'do it or die' attitude that informs any great work of passion. It's the song you sing when you get kicked in the teeth; the decision you make to get back on your feet and rattle off another punch; it's the humility of defeat and the ecstasy of triumph because you never gave up. But more than anything, it's the sound of the pure fucking energy and joy that comes from making something with your whole heart. As well as being a statement of intent, No Grace was that opportunity to go big or go home. So PAWS went big. After discovering a mutual appreciation between themselves and bassist/producer Mark Hoppus (Blink 182/+44), PAWS enlisted his support to help push these new songs to their wildest heights and pack the heftiest punch they could muster. And from the eponymous opener and first single, 'No Grace', it's clear the two are a perfect fit. Recorded last summer between Chem 19 in Glasgow and a private studio in Somerset, it's a partnership that strikes hard through the core of the record, from the anthemic gut-punch of 'N/A' to the thrashed out madness of 'Salt Lake' and 'Complete Contempt', PAWS’ third album distills the best of what came before it and builds on it with strength and confidence. Like its been bottled up and shaken every day for the past year and shot out point blank with every press of the play button; these songs soar and stun, they fill your head, swell in your heart, rumble in your belly and consume all available space in your ear canals. But more than all of these things, No Grace is what happens when instead of back down or giving in, you turn the fuck up.

““No Grace” shows the Scottish trio at its peak, crafting a song that somehow finds a way to make each second catchier than the last” - The AV Club “While J Mascis and Mac McCaughan taught these 90s children how to riff and that a catchy lead run can suffice where a chorus might otherwise, pop-punk acts like blink-182 taught them how to rant. “- Pitchfork “The Glasgow trio bring an almighty ruckus.” - NME

Big Deal Say Yes

Say Yes began as an entirely self-funded project. “We had to borrow money to get the album made—it was very risky,” explains Costelloe. The task was only made more challenging when the duo’s laptop, containing demos and ideas for the new record, was stolen in December of 2014. “We had to start everything from scratch—it was fight or flight and we decided to fight,” they say. “Pretty much everything that could fall apart for us, did. This included parting with our label [Mute], breaking up a relationship, band members leaving and losing all of our music when my apartment was broken in to. We didn’t want to give up, or revel in our misery. We decided instead to try and turn it into something magic.” Typically confessional, it’s hard not to connect with the raw honesty of the lyrics on Say Yes. Sonically the record still sounds very much like Big Deal, but it evidences a certain newfound confidence. “We’ve done everything backwards,” the pair explains. “Most bands spend a few years figuring themselves out before releasing a record. We released a record and then have spent a few years finding ourselves.” Say Yes is arguably the most open and emotionally provocative of all their works. “We’ve always been pretty private about our relationship within the band, but feel more comfortable talking about it for this record, as it’s pivotal in the placement of our career.” they explain. “It’s about taking all kinds of heartbreak and defeat, and just looking at it dead in the eye and going for it.”

Track Listing The Young Senators are an exemplary progenitor of DC’s hyper-local, hyper-celebrated Go-Go scene. Peers of Chuck Brown’s Black Heat and Soul Searchers, the septet was led by energetic singer and conga player Jimi Dougans, and featured saxophonist Leroy Flemming, guitarist Calvin Charisty, keyboardist Frank Hooker, drummer James Johnson, bassist Wornell Jones, and trumpeter Phillip Guilbeau. The band issued two singles on the the tiny Innovation label, before joining up with Motown’s Eddie Kendricks in 1972 for his sophomore effort People…Hold On. The Young Senators’ fuzzed-out brand of psychedelic soul is often bootlegged, but finds it first legitimate release in 45 years via these remastered sides.
