Like nearly everything TOPS does, multiple meanings overlap with the album's title referring to orgasm, but also to carrot chasing, gatekeeping, and the social contract. “Living in LA was living out a teenage fantasy,” says vocalist-songwriter Jane Penny, “ living with your band and practicing in the garage. It was also the first time we’ve ever had that much space to make music. Since their first demo in 2013, the Austin expats in Institute have edged their raw anarcho punk blitz into something much more expansive and nuanced. 2014’s Salt EP marked the beginning of the band’s working relationship with Sacred Bones, and it explored longer, more experimental song forms. Catharsis, the band’s debut full-length, was another huge push forward, with a slightly cleaner production and some krautrock influence creeping in around the edges. Subordination sees them push themselves further out of genre, incorporating hard rock and glam and writing some of the most diverse material of their career. Subordination was written in the days leading up to Institute’s first European tour, where they then had a chance to sculpt the songs live before recording them in summer of 2016. The songwriting and recording process sought to close the gap between the band’s records and shows,to make an album as representative of their live set as possible. It was the most collaborative Institute writing session to date, with all four band members contributing (gtr -Arak Avakian, drums - Barry Elkanick, bass- Adam Cahoon & vox - Moses Brown). They worked again with producer Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and fully captured the intensity that has made them one of the best live punk bands touring today. Frontman Moses Brown’s lyrics remain deeply personal, but rather than diving into introspection and plucking out intimate details about his life, he attempts to dismantle systems of patriarchal thought and power. Brown investigates national insecurities and American socialization failures through the lens of his personal experiences in both public school and art schools. The songs on Subordination address the lonely sham of playing by the rules, the search for money and power, the annihilation of a true personality, and the standards of normalcy that from childhood conditions us to feel abject.

Sleep Party People is the brainchild of Brian Batz, a Danish multi-instrumentalist with a boundless imagination. The one-man home recording project took shape in 2008 when Batz began experimenting with an old battered piano in his apartment. Coupled with a strange electronic alteration of his recorded voice, he created eerie, hypnotic sounds and haunting melodies forming the basis of Sleep Party People's self-titled debut album (2010).

RG LOWE S LOW TI M E ABOUT THIS RECORD After ten years in the instrumental ensemble Balmorhea, Rob Lowe is releasing his first R&B-inflected solo LP, Slow Time, under the moniker RG Lowe. The record, while incorporating elements from pop and choral music, largely looks back on the warmth and spiritual ecstasy of early R&B through the disjunctive lens of contemporary life. Lowe, who plays keys, guitar, and provides the vocals on Slow Time, wrote and arranged about forty songs from 2014 to 2015 at his studio in Austin, TX, where he resides. He then headed to Philadelphia to record most of the album with producer Jeff Ziegler, whose raw and energetic production work on albums by Kurt Vile and The War on Drugs had inspired him. He decided to record most of the album in Philly, rather than in Austin, hoping that the record would be infused with the city’s grit, and rich history of funk, soul, and pop. What’s most shocking about Slow Time is that Lowe’s voice, which he eschewed for eight years in his work with Balmorhea, is the central star of this project. The key role his vocals play on the album might be less surprising knowing that as a kid in West Texas, he often performed in church choirs and musical theater productions, and even considered heading to New York to pursue a career in theater after high school. Though his wordless vocals appeared occasionally on Balmorhea’s albums, on Slow Time we hear the impressive range and malleability of his voice as he glides from hymnal backing harmonies, to melismatic bridges, to punchy choruses and pained screeches that stretch his voice to its unbelievable limits. The genesis of his solo project came in 2011 when Lowe moved to the remote West Texas town of Alpine (just outside of Marfa, TX) with a group of friends, seeking inspiration. While in Alpine, a simple conversation with a friend sparked the idea that he should attempt to write a pop album. Though he wouldn’t start writing what would become Slow Time for several years, the seed had been planted, and the ideas slowly, started to grow. As he toiled through the process of learning how to create a pop song, he recognized the need for an aesthetic foundation that could guide his songwriting process. A few years later he bought an old Wurlitzer electric piano, and immediately recognized that it was just what he’d been looking for. The pleasantly conflicted tone of the Wurlitzer--its electrostatic bite and woozy warmth--provides the perfect backbone for an album filled with catchy, danceable tracks that conceal, on first listen, the wistful nature of the lyrics. Though the album’s lyrics focus on an extended transitional period in Lowe’s life in which a long-term relationship was ending, the album clings to a positive energy and sense of determined optimism. Slow Time is a lesson in contrast; drawing power from the tension between the warm, propulsive, lush arrangements of the music, and the darkness, introspection and confusion of the lyrics. It’s almost inconceivable that on the breezy, handclap-inducing opener Lowe sings, “Everything that you see inside / Is swallowed up by a giant tide. / It’s a dream, it’s a lie.”

The spirit and structure of the album’s title track, which closes out the album, perfectly encapsulates Slow Time as a whole. RELEASE BIO Chapter is excited to announce the first ever reissue of “What Is This Thing Called ‘Disco’?” , a landmark Australian post-punk artefact originally released in 1981 as an LP with accompanying 12” single. One of the first records from the Australian underground to incorporate disco elements into the reigning post-punk asethetic, “What Is This Thing Called ‘Disco’?” sits alongside records by international counterparts like Flying Lizards or Yellow Magic Orchestra in its combination of art school formalism and dancefloor hedonism. Melbourne artist Philip Brophy is best known for his work with 70s/80s art-punk provocateurs Tsk Tsk Tsk (pronounced with three clicks of the tongue). Asked to stage an exhibition in Melbourne in 1980, Brophy decided to put disco into an art gallery context. He created ‘fake’ band Asphixiation to mime on stage along to tape, and recorded “What Is This Thing Called ‘Disco’?” as the backing tracks. In 1981, iconic Melbourne label Missing Link released a two song 12”, and later that year the band released the album themselves, repressing the 12” and including it in the package. 36 years later, Chapter has lovingly remastered and reissued the album + single package, with new liner notes and photos.

RELEASE BIO Chapter is excited to release the self-titled debut album by Melbourne, Australia wobbly pop foursome School Damage. Formed by Carolyn Hawkins (Chook Race) and Jake Robertson (Ausmuteants, Hierophants) whose other projects have had releases on Goner Records, HoZac and Trouble In Mind. They were soon joined by Jeff Raty on drums and and Dani Damage on bass. School Damage's sound is defined by wonky keyboards, weaving bass lines, and lyrics focused on the anxieties of modern life and love. They take cues from 80s DIY pop outfits such as The Vaselines, Young Marble Giants and The Particles. “A lot of the songs reflect a sense of self-doubt in relation to the world around me,” says Carolyn. “I think the internet calls it a quarter life crisis.” Jake says his School Damage songs are “about acting adult, having to have stressful small-talk conversations with people, not having fun in the rain etc.” The album was recorded in Melbourne and Geelong by Billy Gardner (Ausmuteants, Living Eyes) and mixed/mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring). School Damage’s previous releases have been cassettes and 7”s on local labels Moontown and Detonic Records. They played King Gizzard’s Gizzfest in 2016 and have shared stages with the likes of The Bats, Twerps and The Cannanes.

ABOUT THE ALBUM Ever since they wrote Light Upon The Lake as Chicago froze around them during winter 2014, Whitney have tried to make the kind of songs they'd be jealous of if someone else got there first. “You've Got A Woman,” released on the B-side of Dutch duo Lion's 1975 psych-pop 7" But I Do, is precisely one of those songs. “As soon as I heard it, I wished I'd written the vocal melody; it's so catchy and powerful,” says singing drummer Julien Ehrlich. Whitney's version is rich, instantaneous, and deep in groove. Much like Whitney’s singles “No Woman” and “Golden Days”off last year's debut, “You’ve Got A Woman” is brushed with longing, nostalgia and serves to slow down time. Unlike Lion, Whitney made it their A-side. Flip the 12" and you'll find Dolly Parton's “Gonna Hurry (As Slow As I Can),” a short, tearful love song hewn from piano, brass, guitar and Julien's falsetto. Things have exploded for Whitney in a year, and time on the road meant that even Chicago feels different now—relationships have changed, friendships have drifted. Ironically referred to by Timeout NY as “Thurston Moore & the E Street Band,” The Men have never been a band to play by categorical punk subgenre rules. Instead, over the last three years, this band has dabbled in everything from hardcore punk to psych to shoegaze to black metal; and they have done all of it effortlessly, and for the most part, flawlessly. Totally removed from the current climate of a.d.d-youtube-blog-hyped generation of musicians under 21, The Men stand out from the pack as both scene elders and actual record collectors. What makes this band so unique is their ability to synthesize their influences rather than just regurgitate them. On Open Your Heart, the band’s 3rd full length, the NY quartet explore twangy country music, guitar solos, surf-ish riffs, psych, and just about everything in between. Erring on the side of literal as opposed to ironic, the song titles here (“Oscillation”, “Country Song”, “Ex-Dreams,” etc.) blatantly celebrate the band’s “you get what you pay for” diy aesthetic. Beyond their genre defying writing experiments, some of the band’s finest singles to date are on this record; “Open Your Heart,” “Please Don’t Go Away,” and “Candy” all demonstrate a new pop sensibility that previous albums only hinted at. Föllakzoid began in Santiago, Chile from what they describe as the result of, “a product of a trance experience between friends, sort of a soul abduction in which they’ve been living since 2008.” The band is made up of multi-faceted artists: Juan Pablo (bass, vocals) is a producer of the Sangre Fresca Music Festival in Santiago, Diego (drums) is a photograher, Alfredo (synth) is an architect, and Domingo (guitar) is also a filmmaker who just premiered his first feature length movie “Partir to Live”. They believe that there is some sort of gravitational force that makes South America able to dialogue directly with other places, times, and dimensions. The band have all known each other from childhood in Santiago. They take their times recording albums, generally allowing two years in between perfecting their songs with their goal being to make something organic, that breaths on it’s own, which integrates into part of a separate, higher and bigger living organism.

Original 2009 one-sheet text: Moon Duo is the solo alter-ego of Wooden Shjips guitarist and singer Ripley Johnson. Under the Moon Duo moniker Johnson creates expansive Krautrock influenced tapestries of warm cascading fuzz and controlled feedback, organ, and accenting keyboard. This four song 12-inch is the second release and incorporates a much more concise, composed and driving sound than before. Johnson expands on ideas only hinted at on the Sick Thirst 12-inch (which is already long gone) adding a driving drum machine beat behind the thick walls of layered sound. Don’t sleep on this one.
