Legendary multimedia artist David Lynch returns this summer with the follow-up to Crazy Clown Time, his acclaimed 2011 solo debut. The new album sees Lynch returning to primary songwriting and performance duties, writing 11 out of the album’s 12 tracks. Also included in the lineup is Lynch’s signature take on the Bob Dylan folk classic “The Ballad of Hollis Brown,” and a bonus track contribution featuring acclaimed Swedish musician Lykke Li. The Big Dream was recorded over several months at Lynch’s own Asymmetrical Studio with engineer Dean Hurley, who also contributes production and instrumentation to the album. Describing his style of music as “modern blues,” Lynch says,“most of the songs start out as a type of blues jam and then we go sideways from there. What comes out is a hybrid, modernized form of low-down blues.” As you would expect from an accomplished film director, the songs are cinematic in scope. Lynch uses his reverb-drenched guitar and processed voice to summon primal moods and melodies that color a strange world populated by character archetypes familiar to fans of his films: the irresistible femme fatale in “Star Dream Girl,” the tender romantic in “The Big Dream,” and “Are You Sure,” the smooth psychopath in “Say It,” and the quirky oddball in “Sun Can’t Be Seen No More.” While Lynch touches on modern electronic production (“Wishing Well” and “Last Call”) and classically dreamy material (“Are You Sure,” “Cold Wind Blowin’”), the album always manages to keep one foot rooted in the blues — a style of music he loves. “The Blues is an honest and emotional form of music that is thrilling to the soul. I keep coming back to it, because it feels so good,” Lynch says. The double LP comes with a bonus 7", “I’m Waiting Here,” featuring Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li. The B-side of the 7" contains a one-of-a-kind etching inscribed by Lynch.

For all the dark tones pulsing through Gauntlet Hair's new album Stills, there is also a guileless affection for the goth industrialists and post-punks who blazed a shadowy path through the 80s and 90s. Recorded during Portland, Oregon's grey winter days in producer Jacob Portrait's (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) appropriately named studio "The Cave," Stills is a modern salute to Trent Reznor and his cohort's arenaready post-apocalyptica. The album follows the once-Denver-based band's 2011self-titled debut for Dead Oceans and singles spread across labels like Forest Family and Mexican Summer. After moving back to their hometown of Chicago last year, drummer Craig Nice and singer/guitarist Andy R. looked to their teenage selves for inspiration. "I started listening again to the stuff I would have in my discman in the back of my mom's car," says Nice. "White Zombie, Marilyn Manson â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the production on those records is so amazing. Nothing sounds like that anymore." Mining childhood nostalgia for inspiration has proved effective. Their early collaborations paired Patricia’s delicate vocals and introspective lyrics with Ian’s solo sketches. Soon they moved on to writing music together, building songs from wild, improvised sessions in Ian’s home studio. LIVE [liv, verb] was recorded, uh, live [l v, adj. or adv.] at Largo on August 3rd, 2012 at her monthly show, "Tig Has Friends." The day before this set, Tig was diagnosed with cancer in both breasts. This news was the bookend to an agonizing year in which Tig spent weeks in the hospital battling an intestinal bacteria infection. A week after being released from the hospital, her mother unexpectedly died. Then, in the middle of it all, her relationship fell apart. Which leads us here. Tig's 30 minute set is not much more than an open-mic set in that it's half scripted, raw and real. It's an insightful detailing of her assessing a horrible set of circumstances in a calm, clever and clear manner. “Live at The Moth” was recorded on December 5th at The Avalon Hollywood. The story, recorded for the acclaimed storytelling podcast, is a companion piece of sorts to LIVE. In the 16 minute piece, Tig elaborates on the death of her mother and the untimely passing eventually lead to a reconnection with her step father.

Ashley Eriksson (darling to many for her work with LAKE) has achieved a status few artists ever know: her song "Island Song" can be hummed by almost any teenager in the United States (a surprising discovery she made while teaching Portland's Rock Camp for Girls last summer). Used as the closing theme for Cartoon Network's cult sensation Adventure Time, "Island Song" has over a million views on Youtube and has generated dozens of cover videos, making Ashley Eriksson the equivalent of a "household name" to the youth of America. Now Ashley Eriksson has recorded Colours [KLP245], her inspired solo debut on K, and a collection of piano pieces, ballads and songs for her fans around the world. Tucker Martine (producer of LAKE, Decemberists) planted the idea that Ashley should make a solo record after they worked together in 2011, but it wasn't until returning from a trip to Sweden that Ashley was motivated to create Colours, and her vision for a solo piano album quickly evolved to include songs with her beloved '70s style of instrumentation and pop sensibility (most strikingly her cover of "Ett Stilla Regn" a song by the tragic Swedish pop team Ted and Kenneth Gärdestad, adapted in the style "Me and My Arrow" by Harry Nilsson). Because Ashley engineered and recorded the album herself (using the same 8-track she's been recording with since she was a teenager), she was able to capture her collection of songs in a variety of old haunts, including favorite grange halls and churches, her tiny shed in northern Sweden, friends' houses, and in the Whidbey Island studio-trailer where she lived with husband (and LAKE collaborator) Eli Moore. It’s the emotional space Ashley reserved for herself while recording Colours that makes it such a personal and vivid statement. Of writing the beautiful, lead ballad "Why Are You So Helpless?” Ashley says “I dreamt this song while I was sleeping in the little shed behind my dad's house in northern Sweden. I was in a record store and a John Lennon song came on I'd never heard before. It was a 70's 'super group' album, like the Band or CSNY or something like that. When I woke up I was anxious to capture the song. I recorded the demo on my phone and sang with an acoustic guitar I had with me.” In a similar way, all the songs on Colours are collected from her dreams, expanded by graceful piano notes and the peaceful echoes of fire-lit evenings. Ashley Eriksson currently resides in Olympia, WA. She will conduct a special tour of all-ages events around the United States in July and August, 2013.

A story that could almost be fiction. The house passing as a home, the harem passing as a family, the rising star brutally murdered in his prime, the dream, the con: The end. Arrow Brown inhabited the same southside Chicago landscape as Afro-Noir author Iceberg Slim’s ghetto characters, taking inspiration from the same dark sources that shaded Airtight Willie, White Folks, and Blue Howard. Drawn to the underground and fancying himself a rogue entrepreneur, Brown and his Bandit label lived somewhere between money laundering outfit and sex cult. He poured proceeds from his many “daughters” straight jobs into making records by the Arrows, the Majestic Arrows, Johnny Davis, Linda Balentine, Hassan, Chosen Few, Sandy Cleveland, and even his seven-year-old son Altyrone Deno Brown. Putting beauty and genius in front of commercial viability, Arrow laid down lush, sweeping strings to lure the listener into a hipster fantasy world, sharply incongruent with the sometimes-criminal reality of the city that dreamt it. Best known for their 1969 paper hit “Iron Leg,” the mixed instrumental combo Mickey & the Soul Generation came to seminational attention following Nipsey Russell’s performance of the Iron Leg dance on Johnny Carson. Though they shared a label with Ben E. King, they lacked access to the same promotion and marketing resources. A tour with Sam & Dave and opening slots for James Brown, Kool & the Gang, and The Supremes found them performing for thousands nightly, but still sleeping on floors. By the mid-’70s the group had fractured, with members joining the army, bottling Coke, and starting families. Their run would end in 1977 with two members turning in a passing Average White Band impression called “Southern Fired Funk” before their handful of 45s fell completely out of vogue and made their journey to thrift shops and cut-out distributors. At the dawn of the century, Josh Davis (AKA DJ Shadow) tracked Mickey and his Soul Generation down for the purpose of reissuing their recordings on his upstart Cali-Tex label. “Mickey and the Soul Generation are my favorite funk band,” Davis wrote in 2002. “They were strong contenders for the title from my very first listen back in ’92. ‘Iron Leg’ being the standout track on an otherwise flaccid jazz-funk compilation of the day. Already a favorite raregroove selection in the ever-accepting UK club scene, I too found myself buoying my bedroom DJ sets with snatches of the irresistible Soul Generation Sound. It became an instant priority of mine to locate an original.” That 2003 reissue was met with critical praise, and ultimately turned a new generation of music lovers onto rare funk and soul. Numero has gone back to the scene of the crime and re-canvased for new leads, helping Davis expand on his original work, with updated liner notes, tons of newly discovered photos, and a previously unreleased track.

A decade ago, Dante Carfagna issued a somewhat anonymous LP under the Express Rising heading. That self-titled affair went in and out of print before 2003’s summer gave way to fall, thanks in part to its release by the frustratingly obscure Memphix label, but thanks more to how it broke new ground for the instrumental rap generation’s interest in the sub-sub-basement of record mining. The album’s blurry boreal cover captured Carfagna’s mysterious persona. Though he’s been attached to such seminal compilations as Chains and Black Exhaust, a grip of Eccentric Soul titles, and the recent electronic soul collection Personal Space--and though his signature “Records I barely like but maybe you will” approach to writing helped build the Wax Poetics brand--Dante remains a tough man to pin down. He doesn’t even have a working doorbell. Which may be a good thing, as he recorded his second album in the middle room of his third floor walk-up in Chicago’s Dog Patch neighborhood. A notorious homebody, Carfagna cut much of this second self titled LP after a long nights of Camel filters and bottled New Glarus—while watching his neighbors departure for morning straight-world commutes. Reaching back to 2008 and an Akai four track, these 11 songs break from the foraging tradition employed by Dante’s debut, swapping out breakbeats and samples for guitar, Wurlitzer, banjo, steel guitar, synthesizer, and an arcane drum machine. Reached for comment, Carfagna had this to say about himself and about Express Rising: “My last record came out ten years ago. Much has changed and much has not.”

Ten years ago, a 22 year old songwriter entered a recording studio with producer Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, Neko Case, Beth Orton) to make a record. Poised with one of the greatest talents for carrying Appalachian music into new places, Sarah Siskind penned a record in which every moment, every stitch thread perfectly. Recorded to 2-inch analog tape, Covered is a masterful record, in which American music and guitar icon, and one of Sarah's musical heroes, Bill Frisell plays a key role. A few years later, by chance, I came across a copy of Covered while digging into Frisell's catalog, for I also have a deep admiration for the music icon and couldn't get enough of his work. Looking back, I had no idea how much this album would shake me down; it quickly earned its place in my heart. I listened so much from then on that I wore out several copies, all the while pondering how such an amazing record could go largely unnoticed by the masses. Four years passed, Sarah fully recovered from her sinus issues and set her sights high once again. She went on to record her much lauded boutique double EP Studio.Living Room and followed it with widely-acclaimed Say it Louder, which earned her 2009 Nashville Music Awards’ “Americana Album of the Year.” As she gained more and more attention, writing songs for Alison Krauss and the like, I listened along but still continued to wear out Covered, bewildered as to why it still wasn't grabbing more people with its poise. Seattle quartet La Luz immediately brings to mind the girl groups of the ‘50s and ‘60s. The immaculate four-part harmonies, the luscious layers of reverb, the occasional choreographed dance move, even the band’s penchant for oldies-style artwork—it all conjures images of beehived ladies singing sweetly on grainy black-and-white television. But give the new “Brainwash b/w T.V. Dream” single a spin and try to pin down a specific reference point from the past. You can’t. The dexterous but economic keyboard lines of Alice Sandahl and the stripped-down groove laid down by the rhythm section of Abbey Blackwell and Marian Li Pino don’t fit in with wall-of-sound icons like The Crystals or The Ronettes. The nimble surf rock twang of guitarist Shana Cleveland is at odds with classic Motown groups like The Marvelettes or The Supremes. Yes, the doo-wop nostalgia is certainly there, but the manufactured glamour and studio sheen is absent. The ladies of La Luz are true Pacific Northwesterners--swathed in warm wool sweaters, laying into their instruments as their hair messily spills over their faces, making records in trailer parks on the outskirts of the city, and battling the gloomy weather by channeling the summer on the two golden nuggets of their latest EP. Hip-hop has always been a cultural mash-up. Starting with the mixed-genre sources of its turntable roots and evidenced in its appropriation into other music forms, hip-hop thrives under the absorption and re-contextualizing of the world around it. San Jose artist Antwon is a continuation of hip-hop’s legacy of amalgams. Rather than building songs out of drumbreaks from old funk and disco records, Antwon is more likely to rap over shoegaze and post-rock samples. He commiserates and collaborates with black metal bands and chillwave pioneers. His performances garner crowds more akin to Gilman Street punk shows than rap concerts—an appropriate development considering his outspoken appreciation for Bay Area powerviolence bands. In keeping with his unlikely bedfellows, Antwon’s latest EP comes courtesy of indie stalwart Suicide Squeeze. Mixed by Lars Stalfors, producer and engineer behind multiple Mars Volta, Cold War Kids and Matt & Kim albums, “Dying In The Pussy” marries an MC’s traditional sexual bravado with a signature style of smoked-out fatalism over ominous interweaving synth lines. In contrast to the A-side’s sinister swagger, “Life Is What You Make It” is Antwon’s summer jam. A stylistic continuation of last year’s collaboration with Pictureplane, this b-side gem is a perfect blend of chilled-out West Coast hip-hop set against the backdrop of glitchy, warbling electropop. BIO Twenty years is a long time. It's a very long time to do the same thing. It's a VERY long time to be in a band, especially with the same five people. If pressed, we can think of less than a half dozen active rock bands with such credentials – and none of them have had the inspired, unexpected creative trajectory of the legendary Envy. Formed in 1992 with an average age of 15 years old, Envy began as a blistering punk quintet, whipping violent riffs into frantic bursts that rarely cracked the two-minute mark. Their inexhaustible exploration of new sounds and ideas would lead them to incorporate strains of a experimental noise, subtle ambience, and triumphant, cinematic rock. By they time they released their third album, A Dead Sinking Story in 2003, they were hardly recognizable as the same band that unleashed the breakneck debut, From Here To Eternity, just five years earlier. Their unique evolution continued through the sprawling epic, Insomniac Doze (2006), and their latest album, Recitation (2010). Along the way they've inspired and influenced a litany of like-minded artists (including Mogwai, Converge, and ISIS), and teamed up with numerous artists for split releases and tours (Jesu, Thursday, Trash Talk, Touché Amoré). Invariable Will, Recurring Ebbs and Flows is a limited-edition super-deluxe box set that collects every song ever recorded by Envy (95 songs in total) across 14 vinyl LPs, all remastered for vinyl in 2013.
