Key Information / Selling Points: Hometown / Key Markets: • San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin Selling Points / Key Press: • New solo record by the guitarist of The Fresh & Onlys • Engineered by Phil Manley of The Fucking Champs and Trans Am • Last album covered by Interview magazine, Self-Titled, Consequence of Sound, Impose, and more Wymond Miles was raised in the working-class small towns of the American West. On Call by Night, the singer’s latest widescreen opus, Miles masterfully evokes that lost landscape, all while grappling with issues of fatherhood, privacy, PTSD, violence, and dissipated romance. The album adds a critical new chapter to the Fresh & Onlys guitarist’s story as an artist, and reasserts him as a major voice in contemporary songwriting. Call by Night sees Miles building a noticeably bigger sound than on his previous solo records, while simultaneously standing as his most intimate work. It’s a record explicitly written for the fidelity of the vinyl format, with louder songs beginning each album side and quieter songs at the interior. His attention to sequencing paid off; the album flows like a piece of classic cinema, and sounds like it’s splashed across a drive-in screen in 70mm. Recorded using vintage gear by Phil Manley (The Fucking Champs, Trans Am) at El Studio in San Francisco and Miles’ Garden Chamber home studio, the record is a treasure of tube-amp warmth, and a landmark in the songwriter’s catalog. Miles wrote most of Call by Night on piano, and while the wall-of-sound guitar and cinematic synth playing that helped define his earlier efforts is still present, the beating heart of the songs is left more open thanks to his new method. Where previous full-lengths were cloaked in distinct aesthetic choices, this record exists outside of any stylistic restraints. “Divided in Two,” the lead single, considers dignity, class, honor, and father-son relationships through the devastating lens of PTSD, all set to a sardonic flag-waving waltz, with martial percussive bomb blasts. The title track explores the enduring aesthetic of British psych-folk. Other songs dip into the traditions of gospel music, sea shanties, and even big-box power ballads, using antique instruments and Miles’ unique perspective on the modern world to forge a new collection of entries for the American songbook. Miles has said the songs on Call by Night mark his “more definitive commitment to seek, listen, and give voice to an enduring muse.” If that’s true, then the muse has obviously been singing to him loud and clear.

Eric Copeland Black Bubblegum Black Bubblegum is the newest LP from Eric Copeland, and we are not kidding when we emphasize it sounds like nothing he has done in the past. The title of the record says it all: chewy, sticky pop that doesn’t taste quite like any chewy, sticky pop you’ve had before. Recorded at Copeland’s old practice space in South Williamsburg, Black Bubblegum contains songs with more conventional sounds and songwriting than any of his previous releases. While there are similarities with Copeland’s earlier work in the drum patterns, major scales and vocals, Black Bubblegum moves away from his trademark psychedelic dub towards strange and fantastical pop; imagine Arthur Russell going into the studio with the Ramones. Wanting to take a more “handson” approach to these recordings, Copeland exchanged sample-driven tech and hardware for keyboards, guitars and effect pedals, creating a new sound that is oddly easy to digest despite its rejection of melody in favour of discord and dissonance. For a long time, Copeland considered this collection of songs to be recordings which would never be heard. This invariably influenced certain decisions made during the creation of Black Bubblegum, blessing Copeland with the unique freedom that comes from making music never intended to be heard, let alone released. When asked to please jot down what influenced this new album and sound, Eric replied ”glam holes, glitter dreams, money troubles, apocalypse paranoia, one hit wonders, manifest destiny, my family’s westward migration, body troubles (was passing kidney stones almost the entire time), LGBT disco parties, Jonathan Richman, Missing Foundation, Neil Diamond, New Orleans, poverty, getting pushed out of another Brooklyn neighbourhood... No Beach Boys, no Beatles, no Buddha... More Bad News Bears.” Eric Copeland has been sound clashing at full volume for over twenty years, first carving out a named for himself as one third of the legendary NY-via-Providence band Black Dice. A wildly prolific solo artist, Copeland has played shit houses, party palaces and seemingly everything in between all over the world. A long time Brooklyn, resident, Eric recently relocated to where the L Train does not run - Palma de Mallorca, Spain. While maintaining a relatively humble and low key presence in a highly competitive musical world, he has releases a prolific amount of music every year through indie labels such as L.I.E.S., Escho (Iceage), PPM (No Age), Paw Tracks (Animal Collective) and DFA.

BIO Stateless is the second full-length album of genre-hopping post-everything experimentalists Tangents. In a delectable hybrid of styles, Stateless cuts up and weaves together rich instrumental passages from the multi-talented ensemble of musicians whose collective resumé spans decent swathes of recent experimental music history: British electronic music producer Ollie Bown (Icarus, Not Applicable); Adrian Lim-Klumpes (Triosk, 3ofMillions) on piano, Rhodes, vibraphone and marimba; Peter Hollo (FourPlay String Quartet) on cello; and the duo Spartak (free improviser Evan Dorrian and singer/producer Shoeb Ahmad on drums and guitar respectively). Sparse metal-coated drum hits stumble over glistening reverse vibes, Saharan guitar licks, Fender feedback and washes of filtered piano. Moments of acoustic jazz surface, flowing into stoic upbeat anthems, drenched with multilayered patterns of glitched strings. The vinyl format of Stateless includes a digital download coupon, featuring exclusive bonus remixes by Four Tet, Rabit, and Bundy K. Brown (Tortoise, Directions).

Omni - the band, not the hotel - are from the former home of the Braves: Atlanta. Playing lo-fi pop that channels the spectre of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Omni brings you back to an era where any sane person was reeling from the unfulfilled promise of the Space Age and Age of Aquarius bleeding into the looming threat of "Morning in America.” Omni distills the buzz and grit that snakes through the best of Television, Devo, and Pylon into surprisingly danceable, hook-laden slabs of raw, angular, sonic bliss. It ’s still the summer of '78, and pushing the roots of rock & roll to its limits remains in vogue. "Deluxe" ser ves as a fresh reminder that rock music can work outside of blues rooted, formulaic progressions without playing it safe behind a wall of effects. Arty enough to impress record enthusiasts, yet melodically attractive enough to transcend to those who’ve never asked: “’Sister Midnight ’ or ‘Red Money ’?” “Deluxe” is a decidedly hometown affair, recorded by Nathaniel Higgins (Carnivores) in their Atlanta practice space & mastered by Travis Thatcher. Released by Trouble In Mind Records on compact disc & vinyl (basic black & limited purple vinyl). LP - UPC

overview :

Recorded in Joshua Tree, CA, “Command Your Weather” sees Big Business return to its original two-man lineup of Jared Warren and Coady Willis. It's a haunting dream about the struggle for dominance of will over the power and unpredictability of nature. Or it's just a really great rock record, it depends on how weird you're willing to get. But you've never had so much fun being crushed in the cogs of the universe's great machine, that much is for sure! I mean, there's no law against having a couple cold beers while we all burn in the fire of time, am I right?!

Recorded by Dave Curran of UNSANE/PIGS/BIG BUSINESS' previous record fame. Founded in 2003 in Seattle, WA., Big Business has spent the last 13 years touring the world and making records. In 2006 Jared and Coady joined forces with the Melvins and moved to Los Angeles. Performing as members of the Melvins and staying autonomous as their own band, they have been there ever since.

‘Centres’ is the stunning new album from Vancouver-based vocalist / composer Ian William Craig, and his first release for FatCat (Max Richter, Hauschka, Dustin O’Halloran, Jóhann Jóhannsson, etc) following two critically lauded back to back albums for Recital Program. Ian William Craig is a trained operatic vocalist who combines his voice with analogue synthesizers, reel-to-reel machines, and faulty tape decks to create sublime cascades of unpredictable decay and beauty. Though classically trained and grounded in the choral tradition, Craig’s early albums were centered significantly around the piano, with his voice merely a marginal presence. But in recent years his practice has come to focus increasingly around his powerful voice, as can be witnessed on ‘Centres’. Fundamentally distressed yet texturally lush, ‘Centres’ is an immensely deep, rich and rewarding listen. It was recorded in an assortment of studio and other locations across his Vancouver hometown: in concert halls and classrooms; train-yards and live rooms, as well as Craig’s own home. It was created using a mixture of sources synthesizer, Hammond organ, guitar, accordion, wire recorder, loop station, Craig’s array of re-purposed tape decks and “cassette choir”. The songs were created manipulating tape loops through two or three decks at once to create strange deteriorating delays with different colors. Craig would then circuit-bend the bias to create odd kinds of distortion, or bend the sound back into itself so it feeds back in unpredictable ways. Continually honing and pushing this process, the album shows a quite brilliant attention to textural detail. Morphing, swirling, scouring, shimmering, it continually expands and contracts around you. Forging a harmonically gorgeous and utterly immersive listening experience, it pulls you from the rousing, slow-build of the opening ‘Contain (Astoria Version)’ through the standout ‘A Single Hope’, with its huge bass and Hammond organ swells, and through shifting cloud-zones of ‘Drifting to Void on All Sides’ or ‘Power Colour Spirit Animal’, the Nico-esque accordion opening of ‘The Nearness’, and back to the cyclical ending of ‘Contain (Cedar Version)’, one of the cleanest and sparest tracks here - pared back to the purity of a single voice and guitar. ‘Centres” is a stunning album that stands with a similarly unique sense of vision and integrity as the likes of William Basinski or Colin Stetson.

Key Points *Previous album lauded in Rolling Stone’s Best Avant Albums, NY Times Top Album Pick, MOJO’s Best Abums, The Quietus’ Best Albums ”the match of any of Sigur Ros’ excursions into inner-space” - The Guradian “ultimately sounding like a collaboration between between Bon Iver and William Basinski. - Rolling Stone “...gorgeously unsettling layers of soaring vocals and distant fuzz—like a union Antony Hegarty and Leyland Kirby” - AdHoc

MOON BROS. T hes e S t a rs

ABOUT THIS RECORD It’s difficult to follow the fragmented life and musicianship of Matt Schneider. His twofold path has always embraced both an abiding love for Chet Atkins and Nashville session virtuosity, and a begrudging though fruitful flirtation with Chicago’s post-rock underground and middleground. In his native McHenry County as a young teenager, he was a guitar phenom, an engine of local pride who played old-timey anthems and oldies for an audience of delighted townies in a button-up shirt and short dweeby haircut. The press took note and his clipping book is filled with adulatory front page praise lavished on his performances at Dobbyn’s House along the Fox River. That he made it through high school is due in part to the fact that he provided the soundtrack for many of his teacher’s drunken evenings and they let him slide through. In a parallel universe he was roped into playing with bands like Adhesive and Filament (two different bands who shared members and lovers) who had more in common with Seam and Tortoise than Chester or Les. Finally out of high school in 1998, Schneider hadn’t lost his zeal for the Nashville studio system and during a several week trip there that summer he found more of a ghost town than a warm welcome for a burgeoning session player; Chicago’s fecund melting pot of jazz and rock was far more inviting. He moved to Wicker Park with his Adhesive bandmates and a succession of acts followed: The Exciting Trio, then Toe (where he and Griffin Rodriguez replaced, respectively, Jeff Parker and Doug McCombs of Tortoise), and then ex-Codeine Doug Scharin’s large fusion ensemble HiM. After touring Europe with HiM, Schneider returned to basics: he retreated to his mother’s empty house in Marengo, Illinois and woodshedded for six months. He recalls “I wanted to learn the instrument.” Maintaining his convoluted trajectory, Schneider never quite returns to the road, rather he burrows in Chicago, creating ever more complicated methods and tunings for his acoustic guitar while otherwise focusing on his children and his carpentry. He becomes, in a classic sense, the best kept secret of Chicago music. Encountering his playing, stalwart performers are consistently stunned. Without ensconcing his work in dubious spirituality he channels something somehow simultaneously poetic and mathematical, like Kepler’s “music” of the spheres. Each composition is instantaneous, improvised and launched from the aether fully formed, making sense only in relation to the spontaneously formed rules of interaction… Songs aren’t so much finite concepts but endless ragas that he taps in and out of; consequently these pieces cannot be entered mid-stream, the listener must participate in the universe as it’s created in order to live in it. His reputation is such that top collaborators need not be sought, but are intrinsically curious to participate. On these recordings, he is joined by Dan Bitney (of Tortoise fame), Matt Lux (Iron & Wine), and Sam Wagster (Cairo Gang). Producer and engineer Brian Sulpizio (Health & Beauty) records and mixes. It is possibly the sixth recording by the ever-shifting entity called Moon Bros (named for turn of the century engineers at the Moon Bros. Carriage Company) but the first three have all been lost, likely forever, possibily irretrievable from a broken CD-R in the bottom of a box of tools and flotsam hardware. Only Dancehall Sound and Frijolillo made the jump to internet download-ability, and only These Stars has ever seen wide, intentional release. Will you hear more about Matt Schneider? Yes, but whether in the context of the great and unknown, or the at-last recognized, remains to be seen.

overview : LA/Joshua Tree based Sugar Candy Mountain deliver carefully built psychedelic odes in the style of Jacco Gardner and Tame Impala. Their newest album 666 feels like something unearthed from a box of records found in your dad’s garage, glowing wistfully with vintage inspired tones, rambling organs, fuzzed out guitars, shimmering keys and sprawling drums. Ash Reiter’s woolly voice croons with the icy warmth of Francoise Hardy, while Will Halsey’s tender Lennon-esque vocals uncoil with easy languor. Recorded with Jason Quever of Papercuts, the bands sophomore album sits comfortably between 60’s Laurel Canyon bliss and more modern production of Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips/Tame Impala). 666 is the band’s first record after deciding to retire Ash Reiter’s eponymous solo project to focus solely on Sugar Candy Mountain. With this shift Ash became more heavily invested in writing for the project. On 666 the band moves away from the grandiose production of their previous album, Mystic Hits, on which some songs featured over two hundred instrument tracks. The majority of basic tracking was done on Jason Quever’s 16 track Ampex tape machine through a Neve console, and completed at the bands home studio. Under Quever’s guiding hand, production on 666 is significantly simplified, favoring featuring strong melodies over the wildly playful orchestrations of Mystic Hits. Quever is also significantly featured on the record as a player, with his influence distinctly coloring the album.

ABOUT THE ALBUM Where is this generation's “In Your Eyes”? Our “Come Talk To Me”? You know, that song to blast as we passionately raise the boombox high over our heads outside our beloved’s window. It’s been a while since we had one of those songs — something expansive and elegant; big-pop that feels personal and tender. Let us humbly offer the music of Sydney’s Gordi — 22-year-old Sophie Payten. Her debut EP, Clever Disguise, gets at it both ways — massive and personal music that doesn’t concede an inch of artistic vision. First single, “Can We Work It Out” has the big, worldly drums of those aforementioned Peter Gabriel classics and a towering, multi-layered vocal chorus that will instantaneously sear itself into your memory. The soft gallop and airy melody of opener “Nothing’s As It Seems” feels like bittersweet sunset of a four-day weekend on the water. Clever Disguise was created with producers Alex Somers (Sigur Ros) and Francois Tetaz (Gotye). And if it’s merely an aperitif for what Gordi has coming up, we’re in for a magnificent show.

Matthew Friedberger of Fiery Furnaces + Bob D’Amico of Fiery Furnaces / Sebadoh

Somehow, condemned to the underworld/whateverworld, they sustained the light for millennia/millennials. Keeping their Ka-Ba intact and entire they always knew the Power and the Pleasure of the Sun God/Some Guy would grant (though they never fill out the forms) them so-called Eternal Creativity (i.e., QQreativity) if they could just complete the journey and Rise Above! Following their righteous path, they ignited Fiery Furnaces (FEE-ery Fur-Nace-es-EH) and stumbled the inner steps of the Sebadjoser pyramid to finally reach the Night Light! The two ancient souls/old people from Under Earth had sublated their fate and became Children/Mature Students of the Upper Light—Hermopolis Magna became Matthew Friedberger and Waan’Ubyee Shemayet became Bob D’Amico. They are now proud makers of Joyful Noise (insert plug here) made possible by their Outlet to Eternity—the SAQQARA MASTABAS. The album is called Libras because the music is scaly. Like Serpent Scales? Yes, Like Serpent Scales on social media! The music stays true to the various ancient serpent scales and runs them up and down the half-step pyramids: half-step Pyramid Vibrations, i.e. cool tunes, i.e. QQool tunes. It thinks! The album is called Libras because the music is well-balanced. Or not well balanced: whichever is better at the given moment as made manifest by the Movement of the Moon, i.e. the Serpent in the Sky. We hear the Serpent in the Sky. We heart the Serpent in the Sky! By the way, the Hieroglyph for “Libras” is a Couple of Zebras. Libras was recorded in 2013 according to the Incorrect Calendar: we number our days by means of Moon Mathematics, as you might guess: in other words, Serpent Scales: for further information, listen to the tracks. The mighty train tracks on aka A Couple of Zebras: this is the train to Babylon says the Long Island Railroad! Tomb Times are Arriving—on Track 6! So Libras was made in so-called ‘2013’ in the middle of Paris and the bottom of Brooklyn. Obviously then, it was made under the influence of the Nubian Nantiquities (remember your Iiaison) languishing in the Louvre. But more than that: it was obviously made under the influence of Atlantis which as everybody knows is sunk in the sea less than 1 tiny nautical mile from the terminus of Bay 13th St. and the Belt Parkway! Yes: that’s exactly where it is. Didn’t you know? The Magnetic Moon Mathematics Music of Old Dynasty Atlantis, if not quite reborn, has at least Crocodile-d to the surface, eyes peeping out, nostrils sucking up as it were. Where? There: on the flood-formed island of Libras by Saqqara Mastabas. Hail Atlantis! So SM invites you, entreats you, begs you for goodness sake to stay on the south side of your soul: promenade down Atlantis Avenue listening to Libras [the sign of a couple of zebras].

DJ Katapila “Trotro” 12” Single + Bonus Tracks

1. Trotro 05:00! 2. Trotro (Instramental) 05:00! 3. Gbe Ohe Coco 02:45! 4. Kotulo 04:45

!! There’s no other producer in West Africa like DJ Katapila. His album Trotro, reissued in March on Awesome Tapes From Africa, demonstrates a wild combination of breakneck rhythms steeped in his native Ga traditional dances. But the spiritual affinity his music share with the minimal sounds of early house and techno have not gone unnoticed by listeners worldwide. Ghana’s tireless producer and DJ, aka Ishmael Abbey, singularly consolidates flavors. As new sounds wind their way from West African neighbors into urban Ghana—particularly the hectic and humid metropolis Accra— Katapila has absorbed and analyzed their insidious influence on local dancers and filtered them into his own works. The result is astonishing.! Two of the tracks here haven’t been on wax before. This 12” single made specially for DJs and collectors adds to the lore of Katapila’s days-long DJ sets and intensely original and (slightly bananas) FruityLoops-crafted minimalist productions. The two previouslyunreleased tracks build on Katapila’s international oeuvre significantly, painting a broader picture of what the iconoclastic road warrior dj-producer has been doing the past few years: making his own kind of electronic music that’s both deeply personal and wildly international.! The multi-layered vocal madness on the original mix of Katapila’s song “Trotro” gives way to the previously-unreleased “Kotulo.” On this track, Katapila interlocks the iconic 808 cowbell sample with his inimitable toasting and you can see this track tectonically disturbing a dance floor. The B-side features “Trotro (Instrumental),” honing in on the sonic details that make Katapila’s ode to Accra’s intense public transport system so compelling. Second unreleased track, “Gbe Ohe Coco,” pushing the boundaries of his extant works with relentless layer after layer building on top of relentless techno. As with all of his songs, Ghanaian traditional dance rhythms form the backbone, as the undulating toms subtly create movement towards an imaginary horizon at the edge of the party. In 2009, they gained notoriety in Europe with a handful of self-released singles and incessant touring. Pitchfork caught wind and said the band “... take a broad view of the genre (post-punk), ignoring timestamps and geographic restrictions to assemble a specimen uniquely theirs,” and their influences seemed to suggest “...a passing familiarity with post-punk's steely derivatives, including French and Italian Cold Wave…” The self-released singles were then turned into a nine track compilation titled Nice and re-released digitally by Italian label Tannen in 2011. MODEST MOUSE / 764-HERO WHENEVER YOU SEE FIT The mid-‘90s were an interesting time in Seattle. The city had just experienced its brief period in the rock n roll limelight, but it was still a lonely outpost in a largely ignored corner of the United States. Touring

2. Whenever You See Fit (DJ Dynomite D mix)

There were barely any all-ages venues to play in town. Bands like Modest Mouse and 764-Hero helped fill the rainy void with a relentless schedule of

writing and playing out. That creative thirst and no-one’s-watching mentality prompted a lot of artistic exploration and experimentation, a phenomenon best captured on the collaborative single “Whenever You See Fit”. Marrying Modest Mouse’s jagged blowouts with 764-Hero’s pensive songwriting, the track slowly came together over the course of a tour together, with the bands taking the stage together nightly and dueling over a few fleshed out chords. The resulting 15-minute marriage of sparse pop and guitar sturm-and-drang perfectly captured the wistful artistry and punk turbulence of Northwest indie rock at the close of the century. As part of their 20th anniversary celebratory series, Suicide Squeeze is proud to offer a vinyl repress of “Whenever You See Fit” with updated artwork by esteemed designer Jesse LeDoux. The 12” single—also featuring remixes by DJ Dynamite D and Scientific American on side B—is limited to 1000 copies on half blue and half yellow wax, includes a download coupon, and will be the first time the record has been available on colored vinyl.

THE S E ARMS ARE SN A K ES TAIL SWALLOWER & DOVE Seattle’s art-core outfit These Arms Are Snakes never really fit in anywhere. Over the course of their 2003 debut EP they vacillated between epileptic fits of ‘90s DIY post-hardcore, woozy narcotic jam-outs, fortified classic rock riffage, and slow-churning cataclysmic dirges. The band continued on a path made even more confusing but undeniably invigorating by the jarring synth hooks and four-on-the-floor pulse of their first album Oxeneers and the prog-rock forays of their sophomore full-length Easter. When it came time to record their final album Tail Swallower & Dove, the band was less interested in charting out new territories and more focused on turning their myriad of approaches into one cohesive sound. From the chugging thrust and Heldon-esque breakdown of dueling synth and guitars on “Woolen Heirs”, to the jagged noise rock of “Red

PEDRO THE LION PROGRESS Pedro the Lion’s first full-length It’s Hard to Find a Friend and subsequent EP The Only Reason I Feel Secure cultivated a dedicated fanbase for songwriter David Bazan’s bittersweet melodies, somnambulist instrumentation, sparse

arrangements, and introspective lyrics. When Pedro the Lion issued their

record with a heightened pulse, bolder guitars, and a long-form narrative that

replaced Bazan’s trademark truncated parables. Any concerns that Pedro the Lion were heading into more turbulent waters were quelled by the Progress EP

4. Letter From A Concerned Follower (Radio Session)

released by Suicide Squeeze Records three months later. “June 18, 1976”, a humble minor-key ballad that follows an unwed mother’s postpartum tragedy, harkens back to somber simplicity of earlier tracks like “Secret of the Easy Yoke”. Companion track “April 6, 2039” is a lush marriage of Pedro the Lion’s singer-songwriter predilections with newfound electronic components. The song would later turn up as “Progress” on the Control album. The CD version

Just Putting This Out There retains a warm, broad appeal as it progresses, inviting listeners into Nancherla’s own personal headspace. Her frank discussion of mental illness is both self-effacing and revealing. “Marc Maron and Maria Bamford created an open playing field to talk about that stuff,” Nancherla praises. “It’s raw and confessional, but they also make it brilliantly funny and relatable.”

Aparna Nancherla never considered recording an album before Tig Notaro encouraged her to take the plunge. The two first met at 2009’s Notaro-curated inaugural Bentzen Ball in D.C.; six years later Nancherla opened for Notaro’s historic New York Comedy Festival performance. The latter bared her mastectomy scars onstage at The Town Hall Theater, an experience Nancherla describes as “amazingly powerful.” When Notaro decided to launch her own Bentzen Ball Records, Nancherla was the first comedian invited to join the new label. Nancherla puts bold, incisive twists on food, travel, technology and more on debut Just Putting This Out There. As her trademark one-liner “Don’t you think any pizza can be a personal one if you cry while you eat it?” illustrates, Nancherla subverts live comedy’s traditional setuppunchline structure to comment on the very art form she pursues. She not only embraces substance over style, she mines unexpected substance from style itself.

New Zealand’s Ghost Wave return with their sophomore album Radio Norfolk. Following on from 2013’s Ages the groups’ latest sees the duo explore deeper into their psychedelic sound, while adding a more electronic focus to their sunny warped songs that mix the sound of Flying Nun bands of the ‘80s, the British explosion of the ‘60s and the wayfaring dubs of Lee "Scratch" Perry. On top of this, they aptly brought on the talents of Spaceman 3’s Sonic Boom to master the record.

From the lead single, Blues Signal ’79 on, Radio Norfolk is a series of trippy, psych hooks filled with clashes of keys, organs, and percussion. Ghost Wave started life in 2012 as the brainchild of Matthew L. Paul (Vocals, Guitar). What was a initially a project relegated to a small room in Auckland, New Zealand over time the sonic chemistry he was cooking up caught the attention of fellow music maker and soon-to-be collaborator Eammon Logan (Drums). Together they self-recorded what came to be their selftitled EP and followed this up with 2013’s debut album Ages. Inspired by skate vids, persian rugs and the music of Little Richard, you could simply characterize Ghost Wave by jangly guitars underpinned by motor-style rhythms and a unique melodic sensibility. Yet, with Radio Norfolk they have gone further than that, creating something even more captivating and intriguing. In their own words it’s “ …the countdown to the meltdown.” “….songs for a real summer’s summer, one of those idyllic ones you see in faded photos from the 60s with surfboards and oversized sunglasses.” – Pitchfork on Ages

The Features, perhaps more than anybody, were the band that provided the stylistic delineation between punk and post-punk in the Auckland, New Zealand scene. The band formed in late 1979, led by Jed Town (guitar) and James Pinker (drums). Both were members of The Superettes with Paul Kean (later The Bats), and when Kean left to join Toy Love they pulled in Karel Van Bergen (vocals, ex-Primmers), and Chris Orange (bass, ex-Terrorways) to complete the line-up. Drawing from the likes of Public Image Ltd, Wire, the emerging New York no-wave movement and Town's passion for late period Beatles, the Features offered a far more experimental and jagged sound than most of their peers and were instantly popular, drawing strong crowds at the assorted hall gigs that were increasingly regular weekend events in the city. Their first release was the single 'City Scenes' on the new Propeller label, which reached number No.32 in the New Zealand charts in June 1980. The label was created by Simon Grigg especially for the band, who then entered Harlequin Studios, where they recorded eight tracks for a proposed album. “The Features changed everything for me…..I found myself obsessed with this four piece, a band who, at the tail end of the increasingly conservative Auckland punk scene, were perhaps the only one that offered up a viable musical path beyond the deadend that punk had become so quickly.” – Simon Grigg After a visit to Hamilton, Features headed south in August, playing in Wellington and Christchurch, where they were forced to return home after all their band gear was stolen. In late September, 1980, Jed Town left for Sydney (eventually forming Flying Nun’s Fetus Productions) thus effectively ending the band, however four songs from the Harlequin sessions were mixed by James Pinker and Simon Grigg. These were issued as the numbered limited edition The Perfect Features Exposed 12-inch EP. Features are repeatedly named as a primary influence by many acts that followed them, breaking down, as they did, the barriers that had been constructed by the first and second waves of New Zealand punk. Jed Town and Chris Orange have since performed several times as The X-Features.
