Like the days of Steely Dan, Harry Nilsson or Prince releasing a classic album every year (or less) comes Mac DeMarco’s Another One, a Mini-LP announced about one year after the release date of the meteorically successful Salad Days. Conceived and recorded entirely by Mac himself between a relentless tour schedule at his new place in Far Rockaway, Queens, Mac discovered that one can actually exist in relative isolation despite technically still living in New York City. The albums first single, “A Heart Like Hers,” centers around a pump-organ riff and lilting vocal melody that is somehow both haunting and warm. It’s a track that shows the maturity of Mac’s progression as songwriter: a little bit more refined, a little bit more sophisticated, but nonetheless still retains the guts and soul of any classic Mac track. Opener “The Way You’d Love Her” has a playful swing to the chords and a guitar solo that wouldn’t be out of place on a midperiod ‘Dead LP, Mac’s newly favored listening pasttime. The overall feeling of the LP is lost love, or perhaps love never found, a topic that the world never tires of and one Mac can move through without it being a dour and somber experience. Title track “Another One” and stand out “Without Me” exhibit this bittersweet sensibility in lyrical and musical context, both melancholic and romantic, blurring the line between happy or sad nostalgia. The record leaves you with the same satisfaction as an old Bogart movie: he’s still the hero, but he doesn’t quite get the girl. It’s odd that despite working at the same pace as artists like Creedence, The Byrds and The Rolling Stones, coupled with an equally unending schedule of touring, press and recording, Mac is still labeled as a slacker. With two fulllengths and two EPs released and hundreds of sold out shows performed in the last several years, a recent late night television debut on Conan following a special guest performance on The Eric Andre Show, it seems, as Mac DeMarco nears his 25th birthday, there’s not a slack bone in the man’s body,. Great singer/songwriters don’t need to reinvent themselves; they just need to keep going and let the songs out in the world, here’s Another One.

Night Beds, the musical project of 26-year-old Colorado Springs native Winston Yellen, received much acclaim for his 2013 debut album, Country Sleep, scoring plaudits for its tortured take on alt country and Yellen’s soaring vocals. But after finishing that album and before Country Sleep was even released, Yellen began experimenting with the kind of melancholic, neon-tinged R&B that makes up the mesmerising Ivywild. The thread that weaves through all of Yellen’s music and holds it together is his unmistakable voice – plaintive, yearning, soulful, heartbreaking. Whether it’s ascending over the luscious epic-electronics of “Tide Teeth” or aching alone on Country Sleep’s opener “Faithful Heights”, Yellen’s voice has a unique beauty matched by few of his contemporaries. The second Night Beds album draws on Yellen’s original love of Bill Evans through to J Dilla and is made up of what Yellen calls “sad sex jams” and was inspired by a long-term love and a break-up which looms large throughout the albums veiled lyrics. Its genesis can be found in the stoned night in Nashville when Yellen first heard Yeezus. Lying on the floor, Yellen blared the album at top volume.

Ivywild is a truly collaborative effort with a makeshift team of 25 musicians, notably Abe, Yellen’s younger brother and closest friend – his credit on the album comes above Winston’s own, so much value does he place upon the work Abe put in. Additional vocals come from Heather Hibbard, a singer from Maine who features on over half of the 16 track album, and was contacted by the gregarious Yellen through YouTube, after he found a video of her covering one of his songs. She came out to the studio the very next day. Finessing the poignant assortment of songs was a sometimes painful task, but dedicated to the core. “I felt at some points we were losing our minds,” he says. Initial versions of “Me Liquor and God” band “On High:” were 17 and 33 minutes respectively while “Finished” took four months to record. His editing process though was simple: “If it makes you cry, keep it in.” Field recordings also flood the record, offering it a deep textural grain. “It is a luxury record, but it has a worn shirt feel,” explains Yellen. “It’s lived in. It’s like a quilt – but it took forever, cutting up all the vocals and letting it breathe.”

Thank You For Stickin’ With Twig is the latest long-playing album from the artist known to the world (or at least to his mother) as Slim Twig. Released August 7th, 2015 on DFA, you may be surprised to know that it represents the fifth album by the Toronto based songwriter / producer. Twig has released these previous records among a swath of EP’s, singles and one-offs, displaying in the process a complete disregard for genre or consistency. The evolution from Contempt!, his sample-stained 2009 debut, through to A Hound At The Hem, his symphonic tribute album to Nabokov’s Lolita (reissued by DFA in 2014), is not entirely linear, although intriguing all the same. Like so many surfsmoothed stones lining the beach shore, briefly unburied only to be discarded once deemed un-skippable, so Twig has gone about seeking the proper rock to cast at just the right angle. One can see why he extends a gratuity to those listeners who’ve stuck around. Thank You For Stickin’ With Twig is to date the most sonically immersive album in Twig’s discography. Where some records have focused explicitly on sample-based songwriting, while others have been completely liverecorded, the new album arrives at a perfectly produced fusion of fidelities. It hovers, glamorously caught between a cloud of obscurant, half-speed tape hiss, and the most stoned Jeff Lynne production you’ve ever heard. Twig flirts here with a variety of vibes, most often opting for a three dimensional approach whereby a warped tape aura is overlaid with colourful, laser-cut keyboard and guitar melodies. A fetishization of analogue texture is married to a digital approach. All the while, we find Twig irreverently raiding classic rock of its symbolism, sexuality, and social ambition for ulterior subversions. In this respect, TYFSWT’s closest cousin may be Royal Trux’s Accelerator.

Zachary Cale has been releasing records under his own name for just shy of a decade. Duskland, the title of his latest record, is a work of craftsmanship full of elegant lyricism and mysterious imagery; a collection of songs that look directly into the face of darkness yet drive beyond it, forging new paths. Allegorical in nature, Cale's songs move away from the inward reveries of his last album, Blue Rider, and divide outward into the voices of others. The album projects images of wide-open spaces and landscapes constructed from half remembered dreams. There isn't always a clear resolution, characters remain in a state of twilight, wandering from place to place in search of an undefined illumination. The lyric: "So many lifetimes I lived in one / I've got to bury them now / No surprises this time around / Not beneath this crown," taken from "I Left The Old Cell", aptly captures the human complexities found throughout the songs. Taking cues from artists like Oh Mercy/Time Out of Mind era Dylan and Nick Cave's work with the Bad Seeds, Duskland evokes a restless spirit, one that is informed by American myths and tall tales. There's a Western flair to many of the album's songs with nods to soundtrack composers such as Morricone and the dream-laden noir of Badalamenti. Many of the album's highlights maintain a ceremonial grace. "Sundowner" opens the album with a lush organ progression played over a plaintive march. As the tension builds, Cale muses "Branded as a fugitive / Dressed in the clothes of an innocent / Sirens ricochet / From bloodless lips I hear them call my name". From there the album moves forward like one long processional; Cale leads his band through up-tempo folk rock and charming country waltzes to minor key dirges and atmospheric instrumentals until ending with a horn section dragging over a funeral beat in the long form ballad "Low Light Serenade". Michael Stasis is a songwriter and artist living in Los Angeles. Since the age of thirteen, he has written and recorded music in tiny homemade studios. As a child, Michael and his father would make toys and go for heady night walks through the rolling hills and lonely mansions of Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. With its own American folklore of wealthy industrialists, witches and dog-people, Michael’s youth danced with an oil-to-water hatred of homework and beige pragmatism. Convinced that imagination and faith in the unknown are keys to the good life, he left home to study art at Cooper Union in Manhattan. The need to score his video work turned into a passion for song writing during late night recording sessions in Astoria, Queens. There is a strong visual element in Michael’s songs – a credit he gives to endless classes in a darkened screening room. Software girls, back-alley gongs and synthetic guitars can all hang together like wildly different characters standing in line for the same cyberpunk party. ‘Show, Don't Tell’ seems to be a favorite mantra.

Presenting a broad range of material, from playing with trial software in his bedroom to learning from acclaimed producer Jorge Elbrecht and stumbling into a thriving community in the Bay Area, Michael has drifted through many scenes to collaborate, perform and grow, all patiently under the radar. Largely self-recorded, his restless output (over two hundred songs) has jumped sonically and stylistically, leaving some listeners to wonder if it's the same artist at all. Stasis calls it "playlist mentality", a fractured approach borrowed from current listening patterns and dwindling attention spans. VAGUESS (pronounced “Vegas”) is the moniker of rock and roll nobody Vinny Vaguess. It’s a band that’s bound to elicit a lot of those “Crossed With” declarations. Like, “Man, they sound like The Seeds…crossed with The Reatards,” or “Dude, they’re basically The Mummies…crossed with The Vibrators,” but let’s just put all that bullshit to bed and get down to why Vinny Vaguess’ songs have people reaching for their garage rock thesauruses. Since self-releasing a cassette called Back Off Warchild in 2012 (complete with a killer Xeroxed Swayze on the cover) and playing a triple-digit number of shows around the greater Los Angeles area, VAGUESS has tapped into punk rock at it’s most elemental: fiery riffs, wiry attitude, and raw power with a prankster’s sneer. Even underneath the muffling hum of a Tascam 4-track recorder, the rhythm section is a rolling thunderhead and the firecracker riffs smoke. The Bodhi Collection compiles the snottiest, loudest gems from Vinny’s cassettes, all perversely remastered so that we don’t get sued for frying your stereo. Even though these two-minute nuggets are caked with bonehead ‘tude and crackling distortion, Vinny’s no slouch when it comes to songwriting and recording. The wobbly synthesizers on “My Dead Friends” recall Lyres and Lost Sounds or maybe ? & the Mysterians, while the quite lovely slide guitar in the chaos of “(You’re) Only Happy When You Bleed” is straight off a Davie Allan & the Arrows LP. Slammed to tape in overnight sessions at the warehouse where Vinny works, these twenty dispatches from the Los Angeles underground are chock full of piss (really, there’s a song called “Sinkpisser”) and lighter fluid. Blondes—Persuasion Persuasion is a trio of new tracks by Blondes. The duo’s first offering since Swisher, Persuasion furthers the extemporized themes explored on that album but reveal Sam Haar and Zach Steinman to be as dexterous in the studio as they are at motivating live, primal techno. Little Howlin’ Wolf is a street musician, bluesman, actor, storyteller and truth seeker. In the late 1960s Wolf -- born James Pobiega in 1950 -- was already a saxophone wailing fixture at the legendary Chicago hangout, Maxwell Street Market. By the mid-1980s he released nearly three dozen 45s. Those singles are sprawling journeys into Wolf ’s world vision, as told through his gravelly voice and an array of instruments in styles and influences not limited to: American Indian, Polish and gypsy folk musics, Voodoo, vocal chants, blues, calypso and avant jazz. Built In Sun is a new project from Joe Plummer, drummer for The Shins, Cold War Kids and Mister Heavenly. Joe has also produced and co-recorded an all drum project called Hew Time (with Dale Crover and Coady Willis from The Melvins), released on Joyful Noise in 2014. Joe has also toured and recorded with Modest Mouse and The Black Heart Procession drums and percussion over the course of the last 10 years. Built In Sun started during touring breaks between The Shins “Port of Morrow” and Cold War Kids “Hold My Home” releases. Built in Sun began as an instrumental idea, with inspirations landing somewhere between John Cales “Fear”, the punk vibe of the Wipers and John Reis, and his favorite soundtrackists John Brion and Clint Mansell. After the first instrumental mixes were finished (with the help of Richard Swift) he decided that the tunes and melodies just might be cool enough to ask a few of his pals to sing. Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession) was the first. Within a day Pall sent back John John, with solid scratch vocals. Another song came the next day, with new ones following almost each day afterward…….There was no use to ask anyone else. The songs really came together with the addition of Pall’s vocals and it felt great to collaborate with him again. With this, Built In Sun was complete, and is set to be released on PIAPTK, August 7th, 2015.
