OUGHT

Sun Coming Down C D / 18 0 g L P / D L

RELEASE DATE: 18 SEPTEMBER 2015 The follow-up full-length to More Than Any Other Day, one of 2014’s most acclaimed post-punk albums. "Too witty for punk, too industrial for art-rock… opens an escape hatch from postmodern recursion and illuminates a long road home paved with social awareness, rigorous self-doubt, redemptive communal empowerment and spiritual exultation.” – DROWNED IN SOUND

Ought returns with their second full-length album Sun Coming Down, following a break-out year for the Montréal-based rock quartet that saw its 2014 debut More Than Any Other Day make well-deserved waves for its blend of authentic, anxious, controlled and restive energy, with a Best New Music nod from Pitchfork and appearances on a wide range of year-end lists. Having spent most of 2014 on the road vitalizing audiences with no-nonsense postpunk and the feverishly observational testifying of singer/guitarist Tim Darcy (who officially changed his name from Tim Beeler this year), Ought settled into a long harsh Montreal winter hibernation, spending the first few months of 2015 writing, playing the occasional local gig, and eventually heading back to the Hotel2Tango recording studio in the spring to lay down a batch of fresh tunes. Sun Coming Down maintains the band's tight, twitchy and economical sound, with the unfussy, understated rhythm section of drummer Tim Keen and bassist Ben Stidworthy anchoring Tim Darcy's electric guitar and Matt May's fuzzed-out keys (sounding, as often as not, like a second guitar). Ought pursue an artistically apposite austerity in committing these new songs to tape, referencing the arid and unvarnished production of no-wave and early indie rock while balancing carved-out angularity against an evolving comfort with textural coalescences and measured pacing. It makes for an album that's consistently, insistently propulsive but also feels unhurried and pleasantly unhyped. Songs like “Beautiful Blue Sky” (already a fan favorite from live shows) and “Never Better” unfold with gradual and deliberate ebb and flow, where scratchy guitars play like dappled shards of light on gently roiling waves of bass and organ; "The Combo" and "Celebration" keep things crisp and concise. Darcy's voice and lyrics continue to distinguish and define the personality of the band: his blend of ironic detachment, declarative insistence, fragmentary stammering poetics, and the occasional direct aside to the listener, finds various ways to weave within or drive through the mixes. Sun Coming Down confirms the distinctive vitality and purposive naturalism of this band; Ought resists facile primitivism and overhyped dynamics in equal measure, keeping things hermetic but never airless, ascetic but never dispassionate, literate but never prolix. The band's steady and subtle charms don’t make them the cool kids or the iconoclastic freaks – just a satisfyingly unrefined and substantive rock band that eschews indulgence or aesthetic bandwagoneering to seek a humble, thoughtful corner from which to articulate a position within and contribute meaningfully to a 40year continuum of indie, punk and DIY tradition. Thanks for listening.

For two years now, the psychedelic Destruction Unit has been keeping the world waiting for a new album. And it’s not because they’ve grown up or gotten soft, rather because they’ve been in the streets and in your backyards, pushing the freek agenda and imminentizing the alien-eschaton. They’ve been up and down and all around this globe, battling the greedy club owners, show promoters and control pigs to bring the new American heavy underground through your back door. Now here we are, with the psychedelic Unit’s second album for Sacred Bones, Negative Feedback Resistor. In the spirit of solidarity with the other revolutionary communities of our sisters and brothers, the psychedelic Unit urges you to use this album’s energy, energy your speakers can hardly contain, for its intended purpose: to break the chains which you, at the dawn of your understanding, have fastened around your hands and feet. And to see to it that the thrones of every despot erected within you are destroyed. This is crazed-psychedelic-freek-noise guerrilla warfare and these are our streets. The pigs of the law can use their system to manipulate and censor our messages. The control creeps can keep their airwaves safe and comfortable. But none of them have been able to make us turn our voices or our guitar amps down. Destruction Unit sacrificed their ears to make this album as loud of a statement as possible. Will you lend them yours? Negative Feedback Resistor was produced by The Ascetic House and Joe Cardamon in 2015, with the help of Adult Swim and Sacred Bones Records. It was recorded by Joe Cardamon and Greg Gordon at Valley Recording Company, mixed by Ben Greenberg at The Bunker and mastered by Alex DeTurk at Strange Weather. Destruction Unit is R. Rousseau, J.S. Aurelius, N. Nappa, R. Rousseau, A. Flores with additional accompaniments by A.Z. Hungtai, D. Bolles, L. Rahbek and J. Sanes.

STEVEN A. CLARK THE LONELY ROLLER Lonely Roller Trouble Baby Not You Can’t Have Bounty Time Machine Floral Print Part Two She’s In Love Young, Wild, Free

CATALOG #: SC301 RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 18, 2015 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: EXPERIMENTAL R&B KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK CITY, LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO, ATLANTA, RALEIGH, CHARLOTTE, MIAMI, SEATTLE, AUSTIN TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NONE VINYL NOT RETURNABLE

Outlaws and outsiders, road-trippers and lonely rollers; whether it’s someone searching or someone who doesn’t want to be found, we can’t help but be drawn to the drifters. Singer Steven A. Clark is that next stranger to roll in from out of town, a restless artist recasting R&B. He’s a straight-talker in a genre filled with wish-fulfillment, whimsy and cliched beats; think the Outlaw Josey Wales raised on N.E.R.D. and 808s & Heartbreak. On his cinematic new album The Lonely Roller, Clark’s descriptions of emotions and bad breaks aren’t just a set-up. It’s personal identification set to song, new additions to a canon looking for fresh blood. Clark’s style, refined and road-tested over the years on releases such as the Late EP, goes widescreen. A complete concept, the album flows and ties together, more of a movie and journey than isolated images and experiences. Clark spent last year traveling and reworking songs and stories from his past to show where he’s at as an artist. In the studio, he worked with a composer, Sam Hyken, for the first time, allowing him to write string parts and arrangements that fleshed out each track. Different sounds, eras and influences, from Peter Gabriel to Michael Jackson, Tom Petty and yacht rock, floated in and out, but the end result was Clark’s own travails and travels set to music. “Rhythm and blues ain’t all candy and hearts,” he says. “There is real emotion, and lots of times, artists don’t always go there. Tapping into the darker side helps make a song more real, and keeps things fresh.” Miami-by-way of Fayetteville and Little Rock, Clark’s raw, confessional singing and personal stories pair with pulsing synthesizers and rhythms that hang in the air like a glowing grid of roadside neon. It’s a means for the soft-spoken artist to process all the drama in his head. On songs such as “Not You,” he flips a brutally honest breakup tale and draws emotions and empathy from being on the “right” side of the conversation. The title track uses a slinky, sensual beat to create a perfect backdrop to tell the story of a weekend-long tryst in Vegas. For a man of few words, his unadorned and uncomplicated lyrics hit home. “I don’t want to just be some guy trying to bring something back, but I always think there is room for a flawed character,” he says. “The characters in the songs and me, they’re often the same guy.” - PRESS QUOTE -

Recorded and recanted in 1969, Greasepaint Smile is more assured than its self-titled, Tetragrammaton-issued predecessor. Weinberg’s finger-picked acoustic is layered over distant drumming, while her gravel-pit voice evokes life, love, and mortality. Fellow Torontonian Neil Young sears “Houses” with his signature fuzz-tone, casting chaos over the beautiful ballad, while J.D. Souther, Kenny Edwards, and Nils Lofgren, pick up the slack. Cut With the Cake Knife was recorded by Rose McDowall in 1988 and 1989 following the break up of her group Strawberry Switchblade. Produced with the aid of several musicians in several studios, the album features songs written for the fabled second Strawberry Switchblade album. More importantly, perhaps, it showcases the honest, direct and life-affirming songs of one of the greatest unsung songwriters of the modern pop era at a tumultuous time in her career. Like the veiled melancholy of her former group’s hits, Cut With the Cake Knife hints at a darkness beneath the gloss, a darkness that saw McDowall delve into more esoteric territory with her subsequent recordings and collaborations. Cut With the Cake Knife serves as the bridge between the pop music McDowall had been making with her friends Jill Bryson, Lawrence from Felt, and Primal Scream to what became a more extreme, deep sound informed by neo-folk and post-industrial music. Rose McDowall’s role in the canon has always been one of an outsider. Beginning in Glasgow’s East End in the avant proto-noise group The Poems, achieving fame briefly in the ’80s and then disappearing into counter-cultural folklore, the emphasis in the internet-age has been skewed towards her image and cultural significance. Unseen to many, her solo work, her groups Sorrow and Spell, and her collaborations with a whole host of underground luminaries have still touched lives. As McDowall elucidates: “They’re real sad songs, about real life. I’ve had people come up to me to say I’d connected with them and helped them. I remember a gig in America when we made a whole room cry. It was bizarre. A couple at the front of the stage started crying and then these two boys beside and suddenly everyone was crying. And I thought, ‘that’s power.’”

HOMESHAKE MIDNIGHT SNACK LP/CD/TAPE Homeshake is the pseudonym and solo project of Edmonton-born, Montreal-based musician Peter Sagar. As a follow up to his 2014 debut, In the Shower, Homeshake will release his sophomore effort Midnight Snack this coming fall! This new record explores Sagar’s dizzying time on the road as touring guitarist with Mac DeMarco, reflecting on the loneliness that plagued him towards the end of his run, and the longing for life back home in Montreal. When the mounting pressures of this lifestyle began to take a toll, Sagar left the band to focus on his won music and to rebuild the infrastructure of his life. While many of the new tracksl meander through anxiety and despair, it is also a witness to a return to safety RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 18, 2015

GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/INDIE/R&B Midnight Snack was recorded this past winter with Jackson MacIntosh at the Drones club in Montreal. Musically this time around, Sagar trades in his guitar for synthesizers and a drum machine, developing vocal arrangements from the loops he created for his solo set. He pulled influence from house pioneers like Chipe E and Mr. Fingers as well as Japanese pop starlets like Chiemi Manabe, slowing down the tempo with his own homemade drowsiness. The resulting collection is an eclectic tangle of desolation and comfort steeped in an everlasting reverence of D’Angelo and R Kelly.

Savage, a master of tenderness, refection and projection, has released and toured relentlessly in pursuit of the rarer beauties found only in the nuance of pop song and performance. Other Death was recorded in Santa Monica, Los Angeles as a collaboration with Agor, of Savage’s Arbutus labelmates Blue Hawaii, while Errhead of Doldrums plays on much of the record. Ramona Gonzalez Nite Jewel also makes an appearance, as do TOPS' Jane Penny and David Carriere. This is Savage’s highest fdelity recording to date, with daring, captivating, and as always minimal and soft production style. In contrast to his usual introspection, Other Death is immediately more upbeat, uptempo, confdent, inspired and delivers more consistent pop singles than any of his previous records. Savage is not playing to the middle. Here he gives his listeners, those who crave a harder SNS smack, the energy they crave. This is the release fans will turn to when they want to feel the sophisticated, delicate, and enchanted music of Sean Nicholas Savage at its most brave, free and loud. It’s as if upon being tossed a copy of Other Life, Savage reads the message; “Other Life?” and throws it back at us in blood red, “Other Death”. Other Death is out 09/18 on Arbutus Records.

First 500 copies on limited edition red vinyl.

Regularly featured on Pitchfork, the FADER, NME, Dazed, etc.

Album is produced by Alex Cowan of Blue Hawaii, and features Nite Jewel, Doldrums, and TOPS. Modelled in Vogue Hommes, and performed at the Maison Martin Margiela show for New York Fashion Week 2014. Key markets: Montreal, NYC, LA, London, Berlin.

AIR WAVES ABOUT THIS RECORD While attending Purchase College Nicole Schneit met Dan Deacon, a friend and former collaborator who once described her comforting songs as something akin to "a favorite blanket wrapped around you." Though she played in several bands in college (including the noise jam band Ferrari with Deacon) she eventually shifted her focus to writing and recording intimate pop songs under the name Air Waves, a moniker inspired by the title of a Guided by Voices song.

took some time off from writing. "It was crucial for my creative process to take a step back from making music. Part of being a performer is having confidence to just be vulnerable. I needed to regain that confidence to make an album again after Dungeon Dots," she says. The vulnerability she speaks of is part of what makes her music as Air Waves so compelling. Even her fictional narratives employ an almost preternatural honesty that feels emotionally naked, exposed, and ultimately relatable. Her new album Parting Glances takes its title from the 1986 film of the same name, in which Steve Buscemi portrays a gay man navigating the difficulties of being in a relationship in Reagan-era New York. "I've never seen a film with

King Cyst

(King of New York)

Tracklist: 1. Rubbing Soul 2. All The Best 3. The Lover 4. Invocation of the Apricots 5. Pastis Électrique/The Free Party 6. Chinese Wind 7. She Prefers Green 8. Café No 9. Successive Slidings of Pleasure

King of New York by King Cyst is a 42-minute odyssey about the limits of carnal adventure in New York City. Songs weave together circuitous paths, dead-ends and social impasses; the humanism of its heroes and heroines is strained by their undying libidos. Seductive in the same way a disproportionate painting might be, King of New York is candid series of portraits. Luka Usmiani is the principal storyteller on King of New York. Usmiani, who adopted the moniker King Cyst for his madcap debut Real Pussy on Underwater Peoples in 2012, is a rueful vocalist with a baritone reminiscent of Kevin Ayers, and a guitar player of unlimited range. A love of the Canterbury greats has guided his by-now matured songwriting craft, and with good fortune Usmiani has assembled an outfit for King of New York skilled enough to play equal to that scene's high standard of musicianship. Joining Usmiani on King of New York are Al Carlson (alto sax, baritone sax, flute), Alex Craig (bass), Dorian DeAngelo (organs, electric piano, piano), and Sam Franklin (drums, percussion, loops). Instrumental passages are deployed with the same sophistication and artful pleasure as Usmiani's deadpan narratives, with Carlson's horn melodies in particular carving out gleeful Gerry Rafferty-esque delights throughout. Aside from King of New York's poeticizing of its perennial subjects - the hunt for love and the love of sex - it's also King Cyst's most spellbinding musical achievement so far. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Gary's Electric by Al Carlson, the record's nine tracks were cut live with very few overdubs so it retains the aleatory and spontaneous dynamics that set Usmiani's tune-smithing in its own class. Much more than a "sophomore effort", King of New York shows King Cyst's second LP ranking at senior levels. In other words, its penmanship succeeds across all categories, achieving the high musical standards of yore in the New York of Now.

The EP begins and ends with a minimalist but driving remix of the LP’s title track, “This Is My Hand,” first sung in French, then in English. "Say What", inspired by a poem by Staceyann Chin, recontextualizes images from Billy Holiday's "Strange Fruit" and issues a challenge to compare and contrast the experience of black and white Americans. Continuing on the subject of children, "Bronze Head" lets off the steam with text taken directly from William Butler Yeats' poem by the same name. Birth, the body, and the afterlife all take their places on this EP, with the concluding song "Apparition". Since first singing Stephane (2 accents needed) Mallarme's poem set by Claude Debussy for the song cycle "Quatre chansons de jeunesse" in college when she was studying classical voice, Shara fell in love with the image of the ghost who with glowing hair who leaves behind a trail of white bouquets of perfumed stars. Lionlimb is Nashville native Stewart Bronaugh’s recently resurrected project. Originally started in 2010, the project was put on hold as Bronaugh worked as a day laborer in Chicago and San Francisco before making his return to the Midwest. It was then that he began collaborating with drummer and so- called “intuitive dogmatist” Joshua Jaeger. Shortly thereafter, the two joined Angel Olsen’s backing band both on tour and on her seismic Burn Your Fire For No Witness (2014). The recent revival of Lionlimb exhibits a thematic shift which includes jazz elements and Bowie-esque guitar arrangements, complemented by Bronaugh’s effortless vocals. With Jaeger on drums and production by Nashville’s Robin Eaton, the upcoming Turnstile 7” will be Lionlimb’s first official release, out on Bayonet this September.

Live in New York is an album seemingly simple as its title. Yet Loren Connors -- captured here in cinéma vérité quality at two performances six days apart in November 2014 -- is anything but straightforward. During the past 40 years the guitarist has not only developed an iconic sound but continues to reshape it and challenge himself, and the listener, in accepting radical permutations of the blues. Across these three pieces, Connors builds upon the vision captured on his last studio album, 2011’s Red Mars, where transparent, ghostly notes slowly unravel against a canvas of black drones and funeral tolls. In addition -- maximist, distorted six-string solos, that were once a hallmark of Loren’s early-90s performances, make a mighty return here. The CD is presented in a Stoughton miniaturized “LP” sleeve with metallic ink and an insert. As with past releases, features cover art of Connors’ cut/paste remodeling of a photo of himself. Mastered by Taylor Deupree at 12k.

The Wick Selling points • First domestic solo CD release since 2011. • Connors is an avant-garde legend, his singular alien take on blues is considered on par with John Fahey’s rewrite of American string music. • Connors has been the subject of career-spanning features in Pitchfork and Red Bull Music Academy
