With their swooning collaboration with College, “A Real Hero”, featured in Nicolas Winding Refn’s universally acclaimed neo-noir ‘Drive’, a place in the history books is arguably already theirs. After cracking the Top 10 of the iTunes dance charts in 15 countries, the band stepped back from the limelight to take their time to work on a full-length. “We get asked a lot 'how have guys not already put out an album – that would have been a good time to do it'”, admits Austin. “But at the end of the day, more important for us than capitalising on timing is really making sure that we would have the record that we wanna have.” Recording took place between the duo's Toronto studio and their home studio in LA. Each space served its different purpose – in Toronto Austin was able to make use of his extensive vintage synth collection, making up what he estimates is 80% of analogue sounds on the album. In LA meanwhile, the pair recorded Bronwyn’s vocals, of which they share writing duties for -- in their space -- which includes a film projection room. Fritz Lang's boundary-breaking twenties classic ‘Metropolis’ was a favourite. It's easy to see how the vast scope of Lang's movie inspired the wide-eyed vistas of Innerworld, where soundscapes bleed into vocals and songs take you on journeys into roads unexplored. The artwork for Innerworld is similarly starry-eyed, with British artist Paul Roberts painting Austin and Bronwyn as intrepid children for the cover. “He was in a group called Sniff 'n' the Tears who had a big hit in the 70’s with their song “Drivers Seat”, which we came to know through its use in ‘Boogie Nights’. We loved his album covers which he would paint and from there we discovered he went on to incredible work as an artist” says Austin. “The initial intention was for it to be more about the landscape, but we liked it and it did make sense to us, going back to the concept of Innerworld… Bronwyn and I have known each other since we were 10 years old and a lot of the time we're still the same kids in our mind, in our inner world. And so for us you could say, in our inner world that's what we look like - those two kids.” With their music's unquenchable sense of wonder, perhaps they're not too far from those kids today. “David Lynch never wants to define the meanings of his films,” says Austin. “Similarly, we don't like to get too specific about the meaning of our music.” When it sounds this good, who needs to put their music into a box? Let their inner world wash over you.

In a click-bait driven music scene, it's rare to find an album that stands the test of time, but Toronto-based synth duo Electric Youth may have managed that rare feat with their spectral, stunning debut album Innerworld. “We wanted to make something that had the sense of being timeless,” says Austin Garrick, the band's instrumentalist alongside vocalist Bronwyn Griffin. “Our ultimate goal is to make a record that will be the favourite album of people that aren't born yet.”

Sinkane Mean Love

Tracklist: 1. How We Be 2. New Name 3. Yacha 4. Young Trouble 5. Moonstruck

6. Mean Love 7. Hold Tight 8. Galley Boys 9. Son 10. Omdurman

This is truly universal soul music, uniting rhythm and styles from our world over to help you move, relate and BE. Sinkane’s ‘Mean Love’ rolls like an emotional, existential history of the artist. It was recorded at The Rumpus Room in Brooklyn, New York and co-produced with long-time Sinkane collaborator and childhood friend, Greg Lofaro. From Ahmed Gallab’s childhood in Sudan there is a PanAfrican influence of popular Sudanese music and haqibah, as well as distinct horn and synth arrangements more common to East Africa. This background merges with the lessons learned from Ahmed‘s stints with obsessive craftsmen such as Caribou, Yeasayer and Of Montreal. There is much to fall in love with on Mean Love, his second LP on DFA and the follow up to his breakthrough album ‘Mars’. It might be the funky, infectious brass lines of “New Name” or the reggae-soul of “Young Trouble” or the the Sudanese Pop melody of “Omdurman.” There are doses of West African slow-burners, surprise appearances of steel guitar arrangements and country-soul, a Noir Blaxploitation vibe, and a newly found sweet falsetto voice reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield specifically in album standout “Hold Tight.” Mean Love is an emotionally rich and generous soul album with a very welcoming appeal. The restless creative drive of Ahmed Gallab these past few years has led to a true breakthrough moment for the artist, and this album is a true reward for time well spent. ““Hold Tight”—the record’s groovy and soulful first single—is a sleepily wrought ballad featuring Gallab’s satin falsetto over warm, liquid guitars and a smartly simple, gloriously funky baseline.” - The Fader Exclusively distributed by SC DISTRIBUTION Phone: 812.335.1572 Fax: 888.678.0167 US Sales: Shelly Westerhausen shelly@scdistribution.com CAN/MX Sales: Kraegan Graves kraegan@scdistribution.com

The Juan Maclean In A Dream Tracklist: 1. A Place Called Space 2. Here I Am 3. Love Stops Here 4. You Were A Runaway 5. Running Back To You

6. I’ve Waited For So Long 7. Charlotte 8. A Simple Design 9. The Sun Will Never Set On Our Love

The dance world way too often privileges the new, and not many dance artists write albums as good as In A Dream, the third full-length album by The Juan Maclean, this far into their career. The Juan Maclean have weathered electroclash, disco-punk, electro-disco, techno, house, deep house, and whatever we can call the sound of today. They never feel totally in step with the moment, but somehow always feel right and necessary. Put differently: there’s always something exciting to say about these guys. Let’s start with Nancy Whang. Nancy’s voice has always been a kind of secret weapon on The Juan Maclean records, but this album is her triumph. Just take a look above at the album art where she’s front and center This is the Nancy Show -- you get all sides of Nancy on this record, a wide range of expression. These are all love songs, but emotions run wild. And you can’t pull this off without Nancy -- she’s not living in these songs, she’s leading them. Like every Juan record, this one quotes freely from house and techno and disco. Dead drums and vintage synthesizers. This is a DFA record, after all. But early on in their career, The Juan Maclean stopped sounding like genres and just started sounding like The Juan Maclean. Part of that is lyrical -- how the words interact with the melodies that carry them. The diction is always off in all the right ways. Another part is how much fun Juan and Nancy have with the arrangements of their songs. Different parts interact and play off one another in a way that’s remindful of the interplay on classic disco records.

AVEC LE SOLEIL SORTANT DE SA BOUCHE Zubberdust! CD / 180gLP / DL

RELEASE DATE: 30 SEPTEMBER 2014

Debut album from new Montréal kraut-funk supergroup led by J.S. Truchy of Fly Pan Am Avec le soleil sortant de sa bouche began in Montréal in 201 1, with bassist, singer and composer Jean-Sebastien Truchy seeking a new live ensemble to fuel his desired return to the highly structured afro-kraut trance rock that was a stock-in-trade of his previous group, the pseudo-legendary Fly Pan Am (one of Constellation's earliest bands, active from 1998-2005). Avec le soleil initially formed with Truchy joined by guitarist/engineer Sebastien Fournier and drummer Nasir Hasan; a rotating cast of additional players contributed to the group for live shows throughout 2012-2013, and the band gained a local reputation for irresistible and levitational live sets combining a contemporary/avant-garde sensibility with infectiously angular, rubbery grooves. Guitarist Eric Gingras (Pas Chic Chic) emerged as a fourth core member during this period. Avec le soleil has by now careened towards mastery of a highly original, deeply satisfying, giddy and heady avant-funk. Anchored by the excellent bass and drum work of Truchy and Hasan, the group's music is woven with crisp stuttering guitar and keyboard lines and a dynamic palette of electronic interventions. The pair of exquisite and exhilarating 20-minute pieces featured on Zubberdust! are the culmination of the group's first two years of conceptual and somatic development. (The pieces are subdivided into sections for CD and digital track IDs.) This is (mostly) instrumental rock that exuberantly succeeds in blending a primitivist, hypnotic energy with cerebral pleasures, seeding an addictive trail of sonic brain-candy throughout the mixes. The band wholly embodies and channels its inimitable square grooves, while teasing out the innumerable joys of repetition via micro-deployments of ever-shifting electronic overlays – along with the occasional full-stop and 180 degree turn. Truchy's wordless lead vocals (and his choral arrangement on “Face à l'instant”) add compelling textural and melodic counterpoints while lending the music an especially timeless, deterritorialised and emotive dimension. Radwan Moumneh's recording and production skills are on fine display; the album's sonic bedrock conveys all the assertiveness of the rhythm section's punk/hardcore roots, upon which a miasma of detailed intertwining elements circulate with clarity and cohesion. Zubberdust! comes in waves and pushes some serious air, while maintaining a meticulously upfront soundstage as the music moves supplely back and forth between simplicity/minimalism and complexity/maximalism.

Joan Shelley Electric Ursa

Catalog #: NOQ043 Release Date: September 30th, 2014 CD | Boxlot: 30 LP | Boxlot - 24 | Non-returnable

“Heartbreakingly gorgeous... she sings with striking intimacy, as though addressing someone sitting just a few feet away." – Chicago Reader Tracklisting: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Something Small Rising Air First of August River Low Remedios Long Way To Night Moss & Marrow Electric Ursa

Joan Shelley's music is startling, but not for its racket. It startles because of its closeness, the near-instant sense of familiarity we feel when we hear it. Her songs fill up the air around us, echoing like a voice lost in the later American and British folk revivals - some Anne Briggs here, a little Hedy West there. But none of them are "trad arr. Shelley." Joan wrote them all. Listen to her sing and it's evident. You've never heard that voice before, either. Electric Ursa was recorded in Louisville, Kentucky and marks Joan's first release for No Quarter. It includes collaborations with new labelmate Nathan Salsburg, as well as several other of Louisville's fine musicians. In the eight songs that make up this record, we are seeing an artist in her stride, able to move seamlessly between darkness & light, attempting to reconcile the wild expanse of the future with the burdens of memory. And at the center of it all are songs of a nature beautiful, precise, and clear, delivered to us by her singular voice. Over the past five years, Shelley has recorded several albums, toured with her band, on her own, and as a duo with Daniel Martin Moore, playing concerts for spellbound audiences all over the globe. She’ll continue touring the US and Europe this fall. LP 61689229049

After her debut album Pith [KLP239], released on K, Emily Beanblossom of Ruby Fray spent the next two years touring the U.S., selling her handmade soaps and working on the bare bones of her next album to be released this fall: Grackle [KLP251]. Coming a long way from her debut album, Pith [KLP239], Ruby Fray's upcoming release Grackle [KLP251] blends Americana sweetness with sludgy dissonance. Emily and long time collaborator Nick Botka, teamedup with Pith producder, Ben Hargett, to record the album at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, WA. Their newest recording preserves the playful jangly genre-bouncing enervation found in their previous workwhile insisting on a more disciplined approach to songwriting. The album opens with a slow synthesizer prelude "You Should Go", setting the tone for listless anthems characterized by Beanblossom's harmonies and hollers. "Vespers", a morning prayer, introduces a coy letter to a wayward sailor in "Photograph". Then, with a sharp twist of a post-modern dance beat paired with the tremolo of a Finnish lap harp, "Barbara" takes the stage to insert bitter anecdotes, and "Anthony" invokes a dark spaghetti western composition supporting Gregorian vocal harmonies. "It's Mine", with its trip-hop drum and bass vehemence, finishes into a chaotic degradation of off-kilter cello chords. With musical muscle from a handful of established Austin musicians, such as punk musician Corey Anderson of Ghetto Ghouls, folk singer Julia Lucille, and Danny Metcalf and Danielle Rose Moran of noise rock band SUR, Ruby Fray will be hitting the road to tour in support of Grackle upon it's release date of September 30th.

The Magik Sounds of the Pine Hill Haints [KLP254] ventures softly into the cool, dark whisper of the haunted south. Short, tight spun rhymes about silver quarters and vampires come from a late evening session in a small pink house in south Alabama, located next to an old Native American mound of shells and bones, recorded at low volume with red eyes and open windows. This is the 4th Halloween dance party long player the Haints have cut for K. "Mrs Pac-Man" sets the theme...although this record is quicker and faster, Buddy Holly pop driven than most other Haint efforts, the opening track places your mind in the smokey state needed to feel the Magik Sound vibe. The sad Queen of all truck stops and late night greasy spoons, the lovely Angel Mrs Pac-man hold her charm over the listener and keeps every loner in tune with midnight feeling. I used to work a lot of third shift jobs, serving crummy food to sweethearts, the day finished, done, another one in the books, and the great burden of living in a modern nightmare almost, almost felt like it had been lifted...the sweet early a.m. twilight hours, where all humans are brothers again, all hatreds and vices and ill wills are temporarily forgiven, folks smile and tell a little joke or two, and the haunted Mrs Pacman winks eternal in the background...

MINUS THE BEAR THEY MAKE BEER COMMERCIALS LIKE THIS “Pop” is a tag that’s been assigned to Minus The Bear throughout their career. It’s been used to set a distinction between the unique brand of complex indie rock they introduced on their first EP and the more angular and aggravated sounds of their previous bands Botch, Kill Sadie, and Sharks Keep Moving. It’s also a tag that was thrown around frequently in the wake of their streamlined fourth album, OMNI. And it’s a descriptor that immediately comes to mind within the first few seconds of their classic second formal EP, They Make Beer Commercials Like This. Now celebrating its 10-year anniversary and first time in print since 2011, Beer Commercials is the evolutionary step between Minus The Bear’s first two landmark albums, Highly Refined Pirates and Menos El Oso. Opening track “Fine + 2 Points” remains one of the band’s strongest opening tracks in their discography, charging out of the gates with a syncopated stomp that comes across as a more agitated take on Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Outta My Head”. If Minus The Bear were looking to make pop music without any of its major-scale bubblegum trappings, they nailed it here. The band follows it with “Let’s Play Clowns” and “Dog Park”—nods to Highly Refined Pirates’ formula of frenetic clean guitar work, bombastic choruses, and Jake Snider’s lyrics of detached romantic nostalgia. These tracks may represent Minus The Bear’s original trademark version of pop, but on songs like “I’m Totally Not Down With Rob’s Alien” the band eschews it’s restless energy for atmosphere and dynamics, creating a sound that’s inspired more than a handful of contemporary melodic post-rock bands. By the time the band belts out “Pony Up!” the listener has watched the three-year sonic transition between Minus The Bear’s first two full-lengths transpire within under half-an-hour, with the their earlier math rock predilections yielding to the tightly wound club-banging pedalboard trickery that defined their sophomore album. Even if Beer Commercials doesn’t fit within your definition of pop music, the unorthodox energetic charm of this relatively low-profile release serves as an exciting reminder of why Minus The Bear became one of the most important and influential indie rock bands of the new century.

Track Listing Funk’s answer to the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Florida’s Montgomery Express stood at the crossroads of politically conscious soul and mystically awakened dance music. Comprised of two blind musicians in their 20s and a teenage rhythm section, their lone LP was cut in 1972 for Orlando’s Dove label, then reissued on Folkways two years later. Although the label usually steered clear of soul music and anything remotely commercial sounding, Montgomery Express tapped into Folkways’ Guthrie-cum-Chamber Bros. nerve. “My whole life, I heard music in the air, beautiful music. I’ve been involved in supernatural things, spoken with spirits. I have heard an orchestra up in the air. I know I’ve heard it.” —Paul Montgomery

Numero Group The Sensational Saints Catalog Number: JR028 Artist: The Sensational Saints Title: “You Won’t Believe It” (Try It You’ll Like Us) Release Date: 9/30/14 UPC: LP 825764602815 Available formats: LP Genre: Soul Box Lot: LP: 35 Territory Restrictions: None Vinyl is not returnable

Track Listing Formed in the early ’50s under the watchful eye of Tuskegee, Alabama, transplant Charles Chambliss, the Sensational Saints were handpicked from a Cleveland clothing store, a pool room, and from a group of friends singing from a third story window. After years spent rotating members and issuing stray singles for assorted non-denominational imprints, the group connected with the vocally inclined Reverend Melvin Kenniebrew at the close of the ’60s, making good on their “Sensational” boast. “With God in their hearts and singing on their minds,” the Sensational Saints mounted their crown jewel in 1973 with “You Won’t Believe It” (Try It You’ll Like Us). Pressed in conservative quantities by local gospel magnate James Bullard on his King James label, the group’s lone long-player perfectly encapsulates the intersection of funk and gospel as only the religious conversion of a Bill Wither’s tune can do.

Boothroyd Idle Hours

TRACK LISTING: 1. NYC 2. Skinned 3. Colony 4. Y5 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The first run of LPs comes with a limited edition poster created especially by acclaimed designer David Rudnick. Boothroyd is expected to play his first shows at some point later in 2014.

With the release of his debut EP ‘Idle Hours’ Tri Angle is very excited to introduce Boothroyd, aka, 21 year old, Mancunian native Peter Boothroyd. Since moving to London less than a year ago for school and off the back of a handful of mp3s that have slowly circulated amongst musician friends and industry people alike, Boothroyd has been creating quite a stir for himself within the electronic music scene. Despite this being a debut release by a relative newcomer, ‘Idle Hours’ feels oddly anticipated within certain quarters. There are probably two reasons for this; a growing reputation for being one of the most oddly charismatic producers out there (interviews will undoubtedly b e very illuminating) and of course the music itself, which is pretty much impossible to easily explain or classify. Setting out to create something that felt beautifully wide in scope, but also disfigured and jarring, Boothroyd wanted his music to sound cinematic whilst aesthetically mirroring how his own regular music listening experiences, via the saturated, ultra compressed world of Youtube. Purposefully recorded using the most b asic of set ups and mixed with (in his words) ‘cheap, shitty headphones’, ‘Idle Hours’ feels like the most battered state of the art record you might h ope to hear in 2014. It also makes clear Boothroyd is an artist to keep a serious eye on.
