“Hi, my name is Lou Barlow, my first band was Deep Wound , we were a hardcore band. We recorded a 9 song 7” in 1983. One of my first song writing attempts appeared on that record. It’s called ‘Lou’s Anxiety Song’. The original title was ‘Pressures’ and it’s a straight forward description of my teen boy problems. The singer of the band decided to scream “Lou’s anxiety song!!” at the beginning instead of “pressures!” as I had written it. It was his commentary on the overly earnest lyrics of the song, the title stuck. Strangely, given my overwhelming desire to fit in, I didn’t change my tact and try to write in a more detached manner. In fact , I further delved into the most uncomfortable aspects of my life whenever I set pen to paper and pressed ‘record’. In 1987 I completed my first solo LP ‘ weed forestin’ ‘ , which was really just a cassette i duplicated and gave away . I called myself Sentridoh. The songs were short and I played a baritone ukelele that I modified with heavier strings and flexible tunings. At that point Deep Wound had become Dinosaur Jr. and I wouldn’t dare to play the songs for my slightly older and much cooler bandmates. My songs were potentially even more embarrassing. Somewhere along the way the songs connected with a few people. Generally these people became my bandmates or lovers. I figured I should hold on tight to anyone who understood what I was doing so I formed a band called Sebadoh. When I was dismissed from Dinosaur Jr in 1989 , Sebadoh became a ‘real’ band , meaning, we amped up my acoustic songs and began assaulting paying audiences. The story is that Sebadoh went on to do pretty well. I wrote a song called ‘ gimme indie rock’ and tried to step up my game. We recorded in studios and went on tour. In 1994 or so I formed another band with someone else who liked my first cassette. We called our band the Folk Implosion and in 1995 we had a charting single : ‘natural one’ (#26 US top 40! ). Anyway, it all eventually crashed and burned. By the early 2000’s I was back alone with my 4-track and a basic knowledge of digital recording. I still had a ukelele. I was still the most comfortable writing uncomfortable songs. I self-released a few things , the reviews were brutal. But I honestly believed that I was writing and recording my best material. I love the cozy self delusion of the creative process. Finishing songs, making records and holding the finished piece in hand ( or pressing ‘upload’ as the case may be ) is incredibly satisfying. In 2005 I made my first official solo LP “EMOH” , ‘official’ meaning I didn’t attach a nonsense word to it , I used my legal name. I followed that in 2009 with “goodnight unknown” . In the meantime I sensibly began touring with Dinosaur Jr and Sebadoh again which leads me to..now, 2015. I recorded ‘brace the wave’ in about 6 days with Justin Pizzoferrato at Sonelab studios in Easthampton Massachusetts ( I have recently moved back to the area after 17 years in LA ). Justin was the engineer for the 3 Dinosaur Jr ‘reunion’ LP’s , “beyond”, “farm” and “I bet on sky” . My ease with Justin meant I approached the sessions with a focus and confidence I don’t usually feel. Songs like “redeemed” , “wave’ and “moving’ reprise my early methods of tuning my ukelele down low and writing the song in the moment , during the recording process. Others like “lazy” and “c+e” are live recordings of traditional-style folk songs , some which I began writing nearly 20 years ago. The lyrics encapsulate yet another transitional period in my life . I still don’t feel I have a choice but to puzzle over difficult times in my songs. I kept this album short anticipating the listener fatigue associated with a musician who’s been around for 25+ years. As a music obsessive myself, I understand. I like new things too. But here it is, ‘Lou’s Anxiety Song’ versions 740 through 749: ‘brace the wave’ . Thanks for listening.” - Lou Barlow

The whole thing had something to do with Vashti Bunyan. That’s what Joan told me, but Joan Shelley is a poet, so she makes things up. In a small, dark room that smells of expired hair-do chemicals, there is talk of hypnosis. All the windows are blacked out. “Look into my eyes.” White walls are blinding in the ancient sunlight. A bowl of oranges shines like solid gold, waiting for you. There is a small classical guitar, a sunburn, and a key that turns a lock, and songs come pouring out. Maybe the Greek deal was really about Leonard Cohen. That’s Joanie’s jam: songs wide open enough to let the wind blow the curtains around, and solid enough to hang a ton of heartache on. She writes smart, beautiful songs full of poetry, history, mystery and nature. Like all the best sad songs, they will make you cry. Then they will drag you outside and leave you flat on your back, staring up at the stars. Joan lands on a note like a laser beam on a diamond. Colors fly around the room, and her voice bends between them. People say her voice reminds them of Sandy Denny. It’s more than the vocal range. It’s a quiet power that draws you in. Maybe Over And Even wasn’t written last winter on a Greek island. Maybe these songs were written a hundred years ago in a farm house somewhere in Kentucky. That’s where Joan is from, and that’s where she and guitar player Nathan Salsburg recorded all the basic tracks live. All the people who played on Joan’s new record – and Daniel Martin Moore who recorded and engineered it – are friends. That comes through somehow in the sound of the album. Will Oldham and Glen Dentinger are genius harmony singers. They leave the perfect amount of space for microscopic shifts in Joan’s voice, without sacrificing their own awesome idiosyncrasies. Nathan Salsburg’s guitar follows every twist of the melody. When the song breaks your heart in two, Nathan is there with a high E-string to sew it back together. Joan Shelley’s voice flows out like a river. It never travels in a straight line. It follows bends and curves carved by history. We are all lucky just to be swept away, and go with her wherever she’s going. – Catherine Irwin

WIDOWSPEAK ALL YOURS 1xLP/CD
Widowspeak has grown up in a lot of ways. The band’s third album, All Yours, is one that could only come from Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas: a honed and elegant interweaving of dream-pop and slowcore rock and roll, easygoing melodies and dusty, snaking guitars. It’s also their finest release to date: ten beautiful songs that are refreshingly straightforward yet built from the same well-chosen and deftlyused tools the band has always worked with.

All Yours is ambitious without feeling labored-over, anchored in the strengths of Widowspeak’s consistent influences. There are those familiar Morriconecome-Verlaine guitar passages, moody and country-tinged instrumentation, watery tremolo, velvety stacked vocals. You can hear Molly’s affection for The Cranberries and The Sundays in the wavering melodies of “Dead Love” or “Girls”, and Rob’s adoration of George Harrison and Robbie Robertson in his brilliantly economical guitar playing. The result is an aesthetically diverse and profoundly nostalgic sound; indebted to past eras without feeling dated.
RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 4, 2015 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/INDIE/FOLK/AMERICANA After many line up changes, the band chose to work again with Jarvis Taveniere, who produced their self-titled debut in 2011. They also enlisted him and drummer Aaron Neveu (both of whom play in Woods) as the studio rhythm section. The presence of Taveniere and Neveu contributes a groove that wasn’t there previously, and there’s a few other new things: the swell of strings at critical moments, and for the first time, voices beyond Molly’s own. We finally get to hear Rob sing in the earnestly laid-back “Borrowed World.” Members of psych outfit Quilt contribute harmonies and keys throughout the record, most notably in “My Baby’s Gonna Carry On”, and “Cosmically Aligned”. Perhaps All Yours is so refreshing because it’s a return to form. It’s a record that feels as effortlessly unplanned as their debut, that serves to capture a moment rather than create one.

JERUSALEM IN MY HEART If He Dies, If If If If If If CD / 180gLP / DL
RELEASE DATE: 04 SEPTEMBER 2015
“A daring act brimming with promise.” – TINYMIXTAPES “[JIMH] has a mature and unbridled energy that defies classification, and I cannot recommend it enough.” – A CLOSER LISTEN "Compelling, confounding, deeply moving." – ALL MUSIC GUIDE ON TOUR IN CANADA & EUROPE THROUGHOUT OCT/NOV 2015 Radwan Ghazi Moumneh returns with a second full-length album from his acclaimed Jerusalem In My Heart (JIMH) project, conceived and recorded in his dual homes Montréal and Beirut. Known for his production and engineering work with artists as diverse as Matana Roberts (all three chapters of her Coin Coin recordings to date), Aids Wolf, Ought, Eric Chenaux (with whom he also released a collaborative album for the Grapefruit Records Club) and Suuns (with whom he also released a collaborative album on Secretly Canadian in spring 2015), Moumneh has been firing on all cylinders over the past few years. He has brought JIMH to mesmerized live audiences in Canada, Europe and the Middle East since the release of his first album in 2013, following many years during which the project was a strictly Montréal-based live/theatrical happening. While JIMH continues to expand to include a larger cast of players for select engagements and commissions, the group is currently an immersive and performative audio-visual duo at its core, with Moumneh responsible for all sound/composition and filmmaker Charles-André Coderre creating 16mm visuals and live projections/installations. Moumneh expands his compositional palette on If He Dies, If If If If If If, exploring new deconstructions and juxtapositions of both traditional and popular Arab musical currents, with an album that oscillates between powerfully emotive vocal tunes and instrumental works that primarily make use of Radwan's expressive acoustic playing on buzuk and zurna as a point of departure. One of Moumneh’s finest melismatic a cappella vocal performances opens the album, followed by the uncharacteristically literal-titled “A Granular Buzuk”, where said instrument is processed, re-sampled and otherwise disrupted through Radwan’s real-time custom signal patches. “7ebr El 3oyoun” follows with languidly plaintive vocals set against a gradually accelerating riff underpinned by hand percussion, and Side One closes with a scabrous white noise intervention wherein the entire audio mix is fed through a contact mic placed in Radwan's mouth. Moumneh continues to channel his love for Arabic pop and Casio/cassette culture on the silky lo-fi disco of “Lau Ridyou Bil Hijaz?” which opens Side Two, then pays homage to the until-recentlyexiled Kurdish poet and singer Sivan Perwer on the traditional-minded, unadorned folk tune “Ta3mani; Ta3meitu”. The album closes with a tour-de-force drone piece built from Bansuri flute (performed by guest player Dave Gossage) and a delicate acoustic number set against the sound of waves recorded on a beach in Lebanon. (Song titles employ the transliterative characters used in Arabic phone texting.)
If He Dies, If If If If If If is an adventurous, scrupulous, impassioned and highly original work of modern contemporary Arabic music and a gratifying sign that Jerusalem In My Heart is situating itself in recorded works with the same thoughtful and dynamic intensity previously accessible only in live performances. (Needless to say, JIMH continues to be a must-see live act as well.) Thanks for listening.

Diane Coffee
Everybody’s a Good Dog ABOUT THIS RECORD In December of 2012, former Disney actor and didgeridoo craftsman Shaun Fleming moved from his hometown of Agora Hills, CA to become the third roommate in a small Manhattan apartment. The move took its toll on Fleming, who soon fell ill with the flu. Not having any friends in New York, and not feeling well enough to explore the city, Fleming holed up in his apartment for the next two weeks, writing and recording songs everyday, a process that gave birth to the alter-ego Diane Coffee, and her first album My Friend Fish. My Friend Fish was an album born out of sickness and nostalgia for the sunshine and solitude of California. Sweet, gritty, and full of life, the songs were our first glimpse into Diane's vibrant and pleasantly twisted world. According to Fleming, it was "a documentation of my new east coast existence. My acceptance and embrace of Diane." He goes on to explain "I had never lived in a big city until then, but spontaneous moves have always helped to inspire my writing. I don’t think I ever felt comfortable or at home in the city though. I missed the quiet. I missed having a fire. I missed the color green." It's not surprising that after visiting the charming midwest town of Bloomington, IN (home of Foxygen's label) Fleming decided to make yet another spontaneous move. "I might just like new surroundings. It’s too hard for me to go from city to city, only to come back to another city," says Fleming. Naturally the move and the return to a small town got his creative juices flowing again. Just as the move from sunny California to New York inspired a dark album with relatively optimistic lyrics, his move from New York to Bloomington inspired the new album Everybody's a Good Dog, a bright energetic album with relatively dark lyrics.

ADDITIONAL INFO • Shaun Fleming is a member of Foxygen
Unlike the production limitations that defined the sound of My Friend Fish (recording drums on an iPhone, using a detuned guitar in lieu of a bass, etc) Everybody's a Good Dog was recorded in proper studios with a full band, horns, and a string ensemble, finally bringing to life Fleming's deep well of talent and ideas. The album opens with the dynamic "Spring Breathes", which erupts from sweet acapella into bursts of full band mayhem as Fleming croons about a new love. "Mayflower" with its big brass and Motown swagger is a contender for party jam of the year, while the head-bobbing "GovT" explores "politics involved in the music business, and the struggle to govern and be governed." "Too Much SpaceMan", a psychedelic trip into the eyes of a jaded defense attorney, is followed by "I Dig You Baby" on which Fleming comes unhinged as he channels early New York Dolls. The album closes with the bittersweet "Not That Easy", which finds Fleming coming to terms with the fact that he'll never been an ordinary partner, "I will always be the lover coming home," he says. The album's unstoppable grooves and melodies were written with live performance in mind. "I like performing more than recording. It’s like throwing a mini party each night that goes really well." says Fleming. When you hear him pouring every bit of his two decades of experience as a performer into these songs, it's clear that Diane Coffee is not a side project, it's THE project Fleming has been working towards his whole life.

Savant—Artificial Dance The story of electronic music pioneer K. Leimer continues with a focus on his auteurist studio project Savant. Compiling the standalone album, 1983’s The Neo Realist (At Risk), with Savant’s debut 12” and a grip of compilation and unreleased tracks, Artificial Dance documents Leimer’s complete collaborative venture into the unpredictable realities of music, exploring the gulf between what is expected by its creators and what is eventually - and eternally - committed to tape. Savant was designed by Leimer to tap into entropic truths, asserting an uncaged counterpart to the loop-based minimalism he produced in isolation (recently surveyed on RVNG Intl.’s A Period of Review (1975-1983)). Aligning himself with the Cage-ean principles of chance operations and musical contingency, Savant was a band sans jam. Allegorically, a blindfolded collaboration whose happenstance source music Leimer would sample, loop and sculpt at will. Leimer was creatively autonomous to the point of being a persona absentia in Seattle’s 80s rock scene. Unconcerned by social status, Leimer enlisted musicians from experimental and post-punk groups in the area to come record as Savant at his home studio, Tactical. Among them were ambient composer Marc Barreca, John Foster (founder of Op Magazine - the experimental music publication), Jim and David Keller of the New Flamingos, and their bandmate Alex Petit. Others, like Roy Finch and Dennis Rea, came from a similar orbit. Even with these musicians at his beck and call, Leimer implemented a disarming musical strategy. Savant would have no fixed line up and often musicians would be asked to play instruments far outside their forté. Leimer would however give loose rhythmic direction for the musicians to develop spontaneously against click-tracks. When the performance locked in with Leimer listening at the controls, he’d capture it to tape. These moments became the soul of Savant and the combustive elements that would variegate its timbres. Savant tonally operates in a space between This Heat’s dark primitivism and the found sound collage of Brian Eno & David Byrne’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. These analogies are simply stylistic, as the narrative behind The Neo-Realist’s production makes clear Leimer was concocting via more alchemic means, avoiding genre aspirations by looking for accidental moments of musical intrigue and discovery. Leimer explains this process in the collection’s liner notes: “I was looking for flaws, for faults to act as the stand-out features of the music.” Far from a provisional stab at avant-garde sensibilities, Savant represents Leimer’s repudiation of ambient music’s passive side. Artificial Dance embodies a perfectionist’s family portrait of outré musicians conforming to Leimer’s nonconformist musical ethos. Fitting for its name, Leimer created conditions for asocial brilliance with Savant, materializing an outward offering from an inward studio and a collaboration of audacious invention. The climactic entry in our four-set Unwound exploration, Empire compiles the final pair of albums by the Olympia, Washington, trio. On 1998’s Challenge For A Civilized Society, the band toyed with conventional verse/chorus form, stacking layers of noise and distraction on top of tightly constructed melodies. They’d abdicate entirely just three years later with 2001’s Leaves Turn Inside You, executing a 14-song masterclass in home recording that observed a crucial band in graceful transition from post-hardcore trio to experimental quintet. The mammoth double album was lost in the chaos of a post-9/11 media, baffling onlookers and exhilirating fans in successive breaths before it fell far out of print. At their reinvention and terminus, Unwound ultimately asked “Who Cares”? The Empire box-set teems with period singles, B-sides, unreleased studio tracks, and demos, alongside a 15,000-word essay exploring the terminal stages of the ‘90s, indie rock, Unwound, and civilization as we know it.

BIO By now Envy's influence on various strains of underground music has been cemented – and reiterated by artists as varied as Thursday, Mogwai, Deafheaven, MONO, and Touché Amoré. With legacy comes expectation, and expectation often breeds complacency. It takes only 20 seconds into opener "Blue Moonlight" for Envy to dispose of the gentle, lilting guitar figures that have marked much of their past couple albums. So begins the journey that is Atheist's Cornea, their first album in five years. Despite its relative brevity (at 43 minutes it is Envy's shortest album since their early 90s thrash days), Atheist's Cornea is easily the band's most progressive work. Beginning with a punishing pummel, holes of light are gradually punched open to reveal an uncanny series of dynamic, emotionally charged epics. Not only does Atheist’s Cornea showcase some wholly unexpected new turns for Envy, it also often reaches transcendent heights that could overwhelm a major blockbuster film — all while vocalist Tetsuya Fukagawa sings, screams, and speaks like his life depended on it. Atheist's Cornea is the purest, most distilled example of Envy's brand of brilliance. It is also their bravest album, taking new risks with a much welcomed, broader vocal palette — the stripped-bare confessions of "Ticking Time and String" are particularly revelatory — and an instrumental experimentation that navigates blistering shifts from impenetrable noise to poetic, pin-drop introspection with astounding grace. Envy have finally mastered the art of being effective and efficient without sacrificing an ounce of either – a truly inspired evolution from a band whose mastery of both remains unparalleled. “There are few bands whose immediate impact stops you dead in your tracks. Envy are without a doubt one of them. Like nothing I’ve heard then or since. Long live Envy!” – Stuart Braithwaite, Mogwai “Envy embodies what’s crucial in music to me. The passion with which they create and play remains at the very heart of what makes their music a vital part of being alive.” – Aaron Turner, ISIS “It’s nearly impossible to overstate the influence that Envy have exerted on the underground music scene over the last 20 years. They are a furious maelstrom of beauty and terror.” – Geoff Rickly, Thursday/United Nations

KEVIN MORBY MOONSHINER B/W BRIDGE TO GAIA 7” Moonshiner Bridge To Gaia
CATALOG #: DOC108 RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 4, 2015 FORMAT: 7”/DIGITAL 7” BOX LOT: 50 GENRE: AVANT FOLK / INDIE ROCK KEY MARKETS: NEW YORK CITY, BROOKLYN, LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO, SEATTLE, PORTLAND, CHICAGO, AUSTIN TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NONE VINYL NOT RETURNABLE
In anticipation of Kevin Morby's Dead Oceans' debut in 2016 and in support of a thorough fall touring schedule, we're pleased to announce two new tracks for release this September. "Moonshiner" and “Bridge To Gaia" are two unreleased gems from Morby's reliably powerful, yet understated work. Says Morby, "I wrote 'Moonshiner' a few years ago after reading what has become one of my favorite contemporary books: The Sisters Brothers. The book was very inspiring to me at that time and it pulled a few different songs out of me - 'Moonshiner' being the most directly influenced. The author, Patrick Dewitt, has since become a friend of mine - he has a new book coming out this fall which is to be his masterpiece. I highly recommend him to everyone. I wrote the b-side, ‘Bridge To Gaia,’ while on vacation in Porto, Portugal. I ended up there after a tour and it quickly became my favorite city in all of Europe. The apartment I was renting was at the foot of a bridge that would take you to the town across the river, Gaia. It, like everything about Porto, is immensely beautiful and inspiring. It's a different beauty than I had ever experienced. There was almost something sinister to it. The clouds moved fast, there was always a bell tolling and all the school kids wore capes. This song came out of all that."
- PRAISE FOR KEVIN MORBY’S STILL LIFE "Scrupulous, unshowy sound: deliberate fretwork, sparse percussion, wisps of organ and tinkling pianos dancing around the edges of the frame. Morby's warm, reedy sigh is frontand-center throughout most of these songs, and his halting, ruminative delivery keeps you hanging on his every word." - Pitchfork

THE GHOST EASE RAW
Created in 2010 by vocalist/guitarist Jem Marie as a solo project, The Ghost Ease evolved into a three-piece with the addition of drummer Nsayi Matingou in 2012 and bassist Laurence Vidal in 2014. The Ghost Ease’s woozy and vivid self-titled debut was released on Talking Helps in 2013 before the Portland and Seattle-based trio partnered with Cabin Games for the powerful/seething Quit Yer Job EP (May 2015) and upcoming Steve Fisk-recorded full-length—aptly titled RAW—due out September 2015. RAW is simultaneously heavy and ethereal like an amethyst raincloud. The 10 tracks ebb and flow from softened layers of melody to frenetic shreds of distortion. Matingou’s drumming moves nimbly while Vidal’s bass ensures the album’s swirling moments crash comfortably into the angular grunge freakouts. The dreamy intensity of Marie’s guitar sounds are neatly woven around her voice. Her lilting cadence casts the album’s moods like spells. From the tuneful crusher “PJM” to the swelling of “Gemini Rise” and the majestic piano of “Bye, Love”, RAW embodies its name.
Tracklist 1. RAW 2. PJM 3. Neptune Sun 4. Alight 5. Pareidolia 6. Twelve Twenty 7. Gemini Rise 8. 4BV 9. For Naught 10. Bye, Love
