Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument: Shemonmuanaye Hailu Mergia is a one-man band. In 1985 master accordionist and veteran Walias Band leader/arranger/keyboardist released the Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument / Shemonmuanaye cassette. The tape is a nostalgic effort to bring back the vintage accordion sound of his youth. Hailu was already celebrated for his work with the industryshifting Addis Ababa ethiojazz and funk outfit the Walias Band, and he pressed forward using new tools to reshape the popular sounds of the past. Adding a Moog synthesizer, Rhodes electric piano and rhythm machine to the harmonic layering of his accordion, he creates hauntingly psychedelic instrumentals. These songs draw from famous traditional and modern Ethiopian songs, as Hailu matches Amhara, Tigrinya and Oromo melodies to otherworldly flavors soaked in jazz and blues. The result is a lush, futuristic landscape, balancing Ethiopian music's signature pentatonic modes and melodic shape with beautiful analog synth flair. Hailu Mergia was born in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia in 1946. He went to school in Addis Ababa and then joined the army music department. He was later singing in small bars as a freelance musician when he joined a casual band, touring across the Ethiopian provinces as a singer and accordion player for almost a year. After the group broke up, he started performing in nightclubs across the city. He and his mates formed Walias Band and did something no other band in Ethiopian nightclub history had done: they started buying their own musical instruments. Until then the club owners were supplying the instruments and had the power to fire musicians at will. Following eight years playing at the Hilton Hotel, Hailu and Walias Band went to the United States and toured widely in 1982-1983. Despite breaking ground as the first private band to tour the States and play state dinners at the Derg government palace, some of the band stayed in America while others went back to Addis. After settling in America, Hailu made a one-man band recording with accordion for the first time, mixing in Rhodes electric piano, Moog synthesizer and a rhythm machine. That was 1985. This recording was inspired by the early memories of his first instrument, the accordion.

Nowadays he's making his living as a self-employed taxi driver at Dulles International Airport while continuing to record and practice his music as often as possible. The reissue of this recording brings back a moment when Ethiopian music was shifting from acoustic-based performances to recordings using more and more synthesized elements. While the resulting sound of that shift has its critics Hailu Mergia's initial experiments with "switched-on" solo instrumentals based on Ethiopian folk and popular music captures a singular feeling dripping in ambiance and a very human emotional energy. Evolving from Dunedin band, The Enemy, Toy Love had a brief but bright existence between January 1979 and September 1980. Invoking the ghost of punk and the melody and creativity of 60-70s pop, they were peerless at a time when New Zealand music was still struggling to imprint itself on the national consciousness. They became a model for local musicians around the country and inspired the birth of Flying Nun Records – a label which many from the band went on to work with, including Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate with the Tall Dwarfs and Paul Kean with The Bats. Then, in 2005 Flying Nun released Cuts, a double CD anthology of Toy Love material. Electrifying and unmissable, Toy Love made an impact on all who saw then, and continue to do so around the world today. TOY LOVE:

GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL
GI-177 Lusine Lucky TRACKLIST A1. Lucky (Jeremy Greenspan Remix) A2. Lucky (Steve Hauschildt Remix) B1. Lucky B2. Lucky (Lake People Remix)
RELEASE BIO The quietly pretty sounds of "Lucky" are a highlight of The Waiting Room , Seattle-based producer Je McIlwain's third full-length album for Ghostly International. The track's warm, immersive sounds are a fine representation of the abiding mood of the album as a whole, both soulful and groove-laden, sitting somewhere between electronic pop and experimentalism. For this single release, "Lucky" comes with three remixes, all of which take di erent approaches to exploring the track's refl ective, downtempo mood. Jeremy Greenspan's reinterpretation of the track extracts a brief pitched-down vocal sample and sets it over an insistent drum pattern and a woozy synth sample, and Steve Hauschildt's remix explores similar territory, dialing the beat back and wreathing the vocal sample in layers of slowly unfolding synth textures that pan around the stereo spectrum, leaving you with a sense that you're somehow floating in the middle of the track. Lake People, meanwhile, jettison the vocals altogether, crafting an instrumental that's aimed straight at the dancefloor — specifically, a laid-back dancefloor on a beach somewhere. As a whole, the single plays out at as a series of meditations on a single theme — that of electronic music that's got a heart and a soul.

HOMETAPES | home-tapes.com
"Dude, look what I just got." It started with a text. All Tiny Creatures' founder Thomas Wincek was at work on the new album. He'd just found a Rockman, the headphone amplifier designed by Boston founder Tom Scholz. Basically a guitar DI Box with multiple effects built in, this is what Def Leppard used all over Hysteria. I had no idea. For those vast radio jams of my youth, my brain had been the effects processor. You hear a sound and you make a decision about where it comes from. When I started listening to All Tiny Creatures, it was always a multiple choice question -- and the answer was somewhere between a machine and a memory. A couple months later, I was listening to Drexciya and watching King Crimson live videos. I was hearing Beach Boys songs I never knew existed. Wincek was curating my lunch breaks, and, simultaneously, scattering the breadcrumbs so I could find my way forward. Like leaving a note for yourself before you time travel, I was learning the secrets of Dark Clock. All Tiny Creatures' second album is an ode to the intertwined bodies of music and technology. A familiar, primordial ease is wrapped up in pulsing electricity. In ten songs, the Wisconsin-based four-piece reminds us that our blood-filled frames are responsible for making the tangle of wires around us. We're still inventing fire. "This is like pop music from an alternate universe," wrote Wincek. Cut to "Comets," the album's first song and its undeniable sense of transportation. Conceived quickly after their 2011 debut Harbors, "Comets" first appeared on a mixtape built around the song "An Iris," a highlight of their first album and featuring Justin Vernon on vocals. Over the next few months, "Comets" became a staple of All Tiny Creatures' live set, evolving in real time. That first sound you hear on Dark Clock has traveled a long way. Like the ancient light from a star, it can give you that primitive tingle while flooding your brain with visions of the future. All Tiny Creatures is Wincek, along with Andrew Fitzpatrick, Matt Skemp, and Ben Derickson. Between their triangle of homes in Madison, Milwaukee, and Fond du Lac, they are key players in both the lineage of and the current vibe zeitgeist in Wisconsin music. Wincek, Skemp, and Fitzpatrick are also part of Volcano Choir, the sonic collision between Justin Vernon and the venerable Collections of Colonies of Bees. Longtime friends, the process of creating Dark Clock was its own song for All Tiny Creatures, an opportunity to experiment beyond their years. From sampling computer-speech pioneer Charles Dodge on "The Book" to inviting Julian Lynch to play clarinet on "Reunion" to pretending to be another band entirely on "A Lone Sound," ("We tried to imagine what it must have been like writing music using primarily a Fairlight CMS, one of the earliest, most primitive samplers"), Dark Clock is as conceptually vast as it is viscerally immediate. When I heard "Quickest Cut," I realized where Wincek had taken me. He took the blindfold off at the top of the ferris wheel, right when the guitar solo kicked in. The land that stretched out around us was lush and green, marked with glass skyscrapers and grazed by woolly mammoths. It was as endless endless as the improvised guitar loop the song was built on. I understood it now, the road we took in, lined with telephone poles and aluminum fences. I could see where it started, in those woods. I could see where it ended, in those woods. Dark Clock, like everything I've ever heard All Tiny Creatures create, is a neurotransmitter. From the click of a keyboard to the click of a breaking stick, it connects the dots between where we are and where we came from. You just dial in where you want to land, hold on, and let go. -Sara Padgett Heathcott, Hometapes
LIGHTNING DUST FANTASY Diamond Reckless And Wild Mirror Moon Fire Me Up Loaded Gun In The City Tonight Fire, Flesh And Bone Agatha Never Again
Lightning Dust – the duo comprised of Amber Webber and Josh Wells – tends to thrive in the spirit of change. 2007's self-titled debut was a hushed, intricate folk affair, while 2009's Infinite Light found a middle ground between Suicide and Fleetwood Mac era pop. So when they geared up to make the music that would become Fantasy, the pair was looking for a new sonic stamp.
CATALOG #: JAG239 RELEASE DATE: JUNE 25, 2013 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/INDIE ROCK KEY MARKETS: TORONTO, MONTREAL, VANCOUVER, BLOOMINGTON (IN), CHICAGO, AUSTIN, NEW YORK CITY, PHILADELPHIA, SAN FRANCISCO, LOS ANGELES, PORTLAND, SEATTLE
The first product of this experiment was "Never Again" which was previously featured on a 7" in 2011 and now closes the new album. It is a menacing, almost gothic electro-pop churner, marching from an oscillating beat to an anthemic thunderstorm of synth textures. Like many of its cohorts, the song came together slowly: beginning with a barebones acoustic demo and honed through their new sonic prism, "Never Again" became not only a bouncing synth opus but a thesis statement of sorts for Fantasy.

Lightning Dust's third proper full length finds its inspiration in skeletal synth pop, modern R&B beats, the films of John Carpenter and – in accordance with Lightning Dust's only longstanding rule – absolute minimalism. The core of Fantasy lies as much in the songwriting as in its sonics, and begins with tools familiar to Webber and Wells: her acoustic guitar and his Wurlitzer piano. They worked to distill the arrangements to just the few key elements that were necessary to make the feel right, and through countless hours of labor in The Balloon Factory – their Vancouver studio – the songs found their way to a sonic palette more squarely electronic than either expected.
Knowing now where they were going, the path began to take shape. The duo was keen to use a purely synthetic palette for Fantasy, but instead of toiling away in front of a computer, Wells armed himself with an MPC 2000 – a cumbersome, outdated machine, but one that proved to be the perfect tool to keep the spirit of absolute minimalism alive in their new musical terrain. The time-honored producer's weapon of choice became Wells' entrance to the world of programming, one that empowered him to work by feel alone. Webber, meanwhile, mined the freedom she felt singing along to records as a child, and strove to write vocal melodies and sing with a more extroverted pop sensibility. The hooks are apparent, and Webber sings with a self-assurance that belies the extent to which Fantasy marks a new, uncharted sonic space for the band. By beginning at the end, Lightning Dust has delivered an album that informs their sound in remarkable new ways. Fantasy is a hypnotic, exciting record, recklessly new without sacrificing the rich atmosphere that makes Lightning Dust who they are. "Loaded Gun" is a robotic riot grrrl anthem, while "Agatha" stands tall as an ominous lullaby. "Fire, Flesh and Bone" recalls the best cinematic new wave ballads, while acoustic heartbreaker "Moon" makes the rest of the world disappear. And so while Lightning Dust's destination was never an exact place, Fantasy is as vivid a place as you've ever imagined.

Sometime around the end of 1998, my dear and amazing buddy Alex was visiting my house. He knows everything. He showed me the most superficial, broad stroke rudiments of ProTools and I started fucking around. A week or two went by and I was out dancing through the filthy streets of Chicago when I ran into a fella who goes by the name of Mike. Mike is an extremely industrious and good looking man. He grabbed me violently by my dry and flakey shoulders and screamed at the top of his carbon flavored lungs, "YOU'RE MAKING A SOLO RECORD AND I'M PUTTING IT OUT WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!" He was right about the first part. I rented a saxophone for 2 months, I borrowed some guitars and some drums, I rummaged through the kitchen, I squeezed a fat cat, I poked and prodded and ended up with my very own music. It's real good, if you like that kind of shit. I named it Tonight You Look Like A Spider after a spider I saw one night.

A raw cry from the dark night of one man’s soul. Cloistered away from the popular culture of 1982, rural Illinois priest Tony Trosley painted a pastoral refraction of early 1970s Laurel Canyon watercolors with this stand-alone set of songs. Openhearted and naively psychedelic, Deep Night was recorded during a single pre-dawn marathon, and mixed live-to-tape in an isolated chapel. Cobbled together out of local players to help fill out this ethereal soundscape, Trosley’s band brought an earnest but bluntly unsophisticated backdrop to his phaserdrenched 12-string guitar. The Sixth Station— named for a grim New Testament tableau in which Veronica washes the tortured face of Jesus—managed to avoid overtly Christian themes in favor of a mystical Humanism that resonates timelessly, and to any sort of listener. This Deep Night is as profound and eerie as the images conjured by its title.

On Cleveland’s late ‘60s gospel scene, the BOS label was the refined, professional ying to Boddie’s lo-fi yang, galloping to the fore bearing a torch for Curtis Mayfield’s robe-wearing roots. Founded by gospel impresario James Bullard, BOS is the first chapter in story that includes stints producing major spiritual albums for the Birthright, Roadshow, and Word labels. BOS got its start inside Lester Johnson and Bill Branch’s Way Out concern, running the devotional wing of Cleveland’s largest black-owned record company, and picking up a ton of Way Out’s soulful flavor in the process. Compiled here are BOS’s less traditional moments—12 bridges between FM R&B and AM sermons from a time when those worlds were splitting apart.

Inspired by the infinitely harmonies transmitted by Vista, a benevolent being from a distant dimension, Iasos broke ground for a new age of electronic sound manipulation. His was pioneering work— done from a bohemian boat-slip home office—on some of the first commercially available synthesizers and, on stage, into the kaliedoscopic heart of psychedelicera concert visuals. As life-affirming and attuned to spirit as Iasos’ soul portraits were, prestigious psychology departments heard in them the tones humans hear at the precipice between life and death. Before ambient and New Age were so named and codified, the “Paradise Music” of Iasos—represented here by 13 selections transmitted between 1975 and 1985—brought Earth-transcriptions of a vast and galactic sound-healing to a planet much in need.
