B Boys
Dudu - LP/CD • Hometown: Brooklyn, NY / Denton, TX • Follow up to critically acclaimed 2017 debut LP, Dada • Touring US in July/August w. Bodega • More US dates TBA New York’s B Boys (Andrew Kerr, Brendon Avalos, Britton Walker) find inspiration in the chaos that surrounds them: the aggressive attitude and sonic lawlessness of the city they live, work, and breathe in every day. Their raw, yet meticulous style is characterized by rhythmic complexity, commanding riffs, and introspective lyrics that are as playful and self-aware as they are cutting. Across two acclaimed releases on Captured Tracks—2016’s No Worry No Mind EP and 2017’s debut full-length Dada—B Boys explore solitude and self-reflection through sharp, high-energy shouts and melodic mediations. Now, the sprightly sarcasm and acerbic commentary continues on the band’s highly anticipated sophomore LP, Dudu. Recorded by Gabe Wax (Deerhunter, Ought, Crumb) and mixed by Andy Chugg (Pill, Pop. 1280, Bambara) at Outlier Inn, to be released on July 26, 2019. B Boys have toured the U.S. and Europe extensively, supporting acts such as Parquet Courts, Merchandise, Shame, Sunflower Bean, and Oh Sees. Influenced by The Clash, Wire, and Talking Heads, Dudu finds B Boys picking up where they left off, pondering quotidien grievances while examining the bigger picture. On tracks like “Cognitive Dissonance” and “Automation,” subtle tensions meet agonizing pressure that softly build, then explode. “I Want,” featuring Pill’s Veronica Torres, is a bright, feel-good critique of capitalism and greed. There’s a lot of noise in the world, but what are we actually saying? On Dudu, B Boys take time to laugh, scream and chant their way through the absurdity of it all.

Body of Light Time To Kill ABOUT THE ALBUM Birthed from Arizona’s regaled Ascetic House collective, Body of Light is a dark synth-pop outfit comprised of young brothers Andrew and Alexander Jarson. What began as a vehicle for their exploration of noise and sound during their early teens has evolved into an established production over the last decade, as Body of Light continues to carve out their own style of complex, structured, and moving dancefloor electronics. Their music is not only individually personal, but drawn from experiences shared between the two brothers – and calls on elements of new wave, freestyle, goth, and techno to create timeless and singular tracks without fear of trend or passing fashion. On their third album Time to Kill, Body of Light refines their brand of cold and driving synth pop with a bold pallet of sounds and a focus on uncharted technique and purpose. Like the pale digital stare of the modern devices surrounding our daily lives, the album weaves stories of love and obsession in an era of technical bondage and fleeting exhilaration. Written over a period of intense and profound change, Time to Kill stands as a startling reminder of how important our existence truly is. Haunting keys, swelling pads, and punching rhythms score their work as Alex Jarson presents an alluring and romantic dialogue with confident projection. The title single “Time to Kill” kicks off the album with a merciless signature beat, complimented by distorted sample patterns against an infectious, moving bass groove that invites you to “let the memories fade.” The follow up single “Don’t Pretend” invokes sparkling nostalgia and innocence over a dark and driving beat paired with vintage electronic movements. The haunting “Dangerous”, slows the pace with its pendulum-like rhythm and ominous intonation, falling between a hopeful synth pop ballad and shadowy dirge – a slow dance for the sunrise set. Produced by Matia Simovich at Infinite Power Studios in Los Angeles and mastered by Josh Bonati, Time to Kill shines with new direction and new intention through lustrous production and innovative songwriting.

Ten incredible albums culled from the deepest, weirdest co-op of record enthusiasts ever gathered under one banner. We’ve spared no expense packaging these, pairing the idea of the Art of Compilation with living and breathing art, creating little fortune cookies baked in a factory of forgotten dreams. Video games, pyramids, trading cards, matchbooks, mazes, lottery tickets, film canisters, yearbooks, and various other exercises in design absurdity. The previously unissued soundtrack to the 1964 western noir, discovered after 55 years in the Wayne Louis Moody archive. Sixteen languid guitar instrumentals, femme fatale dirges, and cinematic country crooners score the loneliest night of one man’s life. Packaged in a replica of the original octagonal film canister, with 36” x 27” fold out movie poster.

The B side is another one of the crushing ballads that made Bobby famous in the first place. An early favorite at Big Crown when they turned in the demos, “Alone Again” fits perfectly in both the warmest sunny day in California and the coldest darkest winter night in Helsinki. It is undeniable that Bobby and Cold Diamond & Mink are a match made in heaven and have come up with a sound that is entirely their own. Here’s another two-sider showcasing two different variations on that sound.

Big Crown Records is proud to present for the first time ever on a 45 two tunes pulled from one of Brooklyn’s most sought after “Holy Grail” soul records, YIA Talent Hunt Winners. Youth in Action, Inc. (YIA) was formed in 1963 when the Central Brooklyn Coordinating Council received a grant to develop a youth services program in the Bedford-Stuyvesant community. At one point they threw a local talent show and the winners of the talent show were invited into the studio to record some of their tunes. The Talent Show Winners album is the top five amateur vocal groups backed by a local band known as The Thrillers Band, recorded sometime around 1968. The full length reissue is scheduled for an August 2019 release on Big Crown, this 45 will quick become a favorite amongst soul collectors, this is a truly rare record, and a awesome piece of New York History. The A Side is The Channels 4 cover of the Billy Stewart classic “Cross My Heart”. There’s an unduplicatable charm on these recordings coming from the lo fi studio set up of the time, the fervor that the youths on these records are performing, and the pumped in audience applause they went with to make it see like the recordings were from the actual talent show. This is lo-fi gold. The B Side is Carla & The Carlettes killer cover of The Rascals “Groovin”. The take the popular tune of the time which came out of the borough of Queens and give it a proper Kings county soul treatment. Again, this is lo-fi gold.

Hallowell is modern sacred music from Vermont by Joseph Pensak, his first project since Come, O Spirit!, Bifrost Arts’ seminal record, which featured vocals by indie rock luminaries Laura Gibson, Damien Jurado, J. Tillman (Father John Misty), David Bazan, Rosie Thomas, Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and more. Growing up in Memphis, TN was hearing stories from MeMe about Elvis buying Cadillacs for strangers, watching the world open up as a hero high school quarterback neighbor opened the liner notes to R.E.M.’s Fables of the Reconstruction, and driving home after track practice blasting The Breeders’ “No Aloha” from a mixtape, thinking it was the greatest single recording in the history of mankind (it probably is). College in Mississippi was sitting with his bandmates in awe as the gentle whir of a VHS gifted us Björk’s “Possibly Maybe” live at Shepherd’s Bush, seeing Morphine a week before Mark Sandman died, and drowning sorrows on lonely midnight roads to Red House Painters’ “Katy Song” after his now wife rightly dumped him. In one moment, all of it was pulling out his parents’ vinyl of Déjá Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and trying out the old 1970’s cabinet record player in the living room for the first time: A new day, a new way, and new eyes to see the dawn. Hallowell is the common made holy because of the gospel mystery that the Holy became common—the Needle dropped and the world heard its song. BIO Joseph Pensak lives in Burlington, Vermont and for the past seven years has served as the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian of Burlington and the head curator of New City Galerie, an art gallery for emerging Vermont artists on the historic Church Street pedestrian market. He is married to Katie and has three daughters: Nadine, Lucie and Maëlle. Joseph was co-founder of Bifrost Arts, a sacred music collective. You can find him on Hallowell’s Instagram. GCR014lp:

ABOUT THE DEBUT RECORD Hallowell’s debut record was recorded at Studio 150 in Burlington, Vermont with multi-instrumentalist Christopher Hawthorn and over 20 accompanying musicians. All strings were performed by TURNmusic, a Vermont based chamber music collective led and conducted by Anne Decker. This collaboration with TURNmusic widened to include composer Kyle Saulnier, who wrote string arrangements for “Golden in Spring” and “You Take It All,” with Christopher Hawthorn contributing arrangements for “The Wreath,” “Tho’ Dark Be My Way,” “Another World,” and “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior.” François “Officer” Clemmons, of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, sings vocals on “Another World.” Guest vocals on “Soul Adorn Yourself with Gladness” are by the Vermont trio Fall Like Cats (Becca Booth, Abigail Keegan and Lydia Koch). Almost every other song features harmony vocals by Laura Heaberlin, of the hyper-literate chamber folk band Cricket Blue. All horns were played by Taylor Smith, Nate Reit and Christopher Hawthorn. Sleep Party People Lingering Pt. II Pink Vinyl Edition Overview
Details
Welcome to Lingering Pt. II, the new visionary album from Danish experimental mavens Sleep Party People.
Release Date : July 26, 2019 Catalog # : JNR273 Available Formats : LP-C1/ Digital Genre : Indie Rock / Electronic Box Lot Quantity : 20 LP Packaging : LP-C1 - Standard Jacket Key Markets : Denmark, Poland, Turkey, Mexico, Europe, UK Territory Restrictions : None.
Written, performed, recorded, and produced by brainchild Brian Batz, this is the counterpart of 2017's Lingering. With Lingering Pt. II, Batz finishes his artistic cycle, showcasing his instrumental prowess and production mastery with this batch of inventively choreographed songs. ”To me the two albums have a similar sonic universe and revolve around the same lyrical themes, but still each its own album. After the release of Lingering, I went back to work on ''Pt. II’’, where I modified the structures and sounds a bit, giving them makeovers with new mixes and mastering. To make the album more coherent I added a few new songs to the bunch. The lyrical content of the album is characterized by being written in a certain period of my life. I reflect a lot on the present and not so much on the past. The album is mostly about personal matters and things that are close to my heart." Though Sleep Party People remains relatively underground in the United States (for now), the band has harnessed a groundswell of attention from far reaches of the globe. Throughout Asia, Eastern Europe, South America, and even parts of the Middle East it's not unusual for SPP shows to draw thousands of spectators, each equipped with their homemade bunny masks in homage to the band's live uniform. Sleep Party People first took shape in 2008 when Batz began experimenting a one-man home recording project using an old battered piano in his apartment. Coupled with a strange electronic alteration of his recorded voice, he created eerie, hypnotic sounds and haunting melodies forming the basis of Sleep Party People's self-titled debut album (2010). Sleep Party People released 2012's We Were Drifting On A Sad Song and 2014's Floating, before signing to Joyful Noise and releasing Lingering in 2017.
