BIO A decade is literally a lifetime for most bands. For Italian-American post-punk stalwarts, Bellini, a decade is simply the time it took to make their new album. Separated by an ocean, the members of Bellini lived their lives, mourned several close friends who lost theirs, and occasionally converged in Italy or Chicago to write and record what would become Before The Day Has Gone. Recorded as always by longtime collaborator and companion, Steve Albini, Before The Day Has Gone’s roots are in tracks that were originally laid to tape at Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios way back in 2012, where they sat unfinished until fall of 2017, when vocalist/lyricist Giovanna Cacciola recorded her vocals with the help of Sacha Tilotta, her son with Bellini guitarist, Agostino Tilotta. Once received, Albini mixed and sequenced the album independently, as Bellini has preferred with all of their albums since 2005’s Small Stones. Bellini’s gift for marrying melody and dissonance is as sharp as ever on Before The Day Has Gone – the band’s veteran rhythm section of Matthew Taylor and Alexis Fleisig anchoring Tilotta’s sinewy anti-riffs and Cacciola’s primal punk poetry. Bellini deliver passion and pain with the kind of pride and prowess one would expect from a band of their pedigree, and Before The Day Has Gone is their most dramatic and dizzying display of their two-decade career.

Songwriter Jack Tatum makes music as Wild Nothing and sounds about as removed from his home of Blacksburg, Va., as one could imagine. Like a blend of Cocteau Twins and Atlas Sound, the songs on his breakthrough full-length debut, Gemini, are willowy and ethereal, but tethered to a sturdy and sinewy backbone. “Chinatown” waltzes through a timeless, misty tableaux of wispy vocals and plucky guitars, with a wonderfully faint verse/chorus/verse skeleton, while tracks like the fantastically sticky “Summer Holiday” and “Our Composition Book” have a jangly melancholy the evokes Johnny Marr and The Smiths. Tatum uses his charmingly imperfect falsetto on “Confirmation,” darting in and out of hazy keyboards and shyly bubbling guitar and bass lines. His voice takes on a darker, flatter intonation on songs like the murky “Pessimist” and the bittersweet “Live in Dreams.”

In search of the sublime, contemporary electronic musician Steve Hauschildt has designed grids and panoramas of sound across multiple releases through the rise and dissolution of his former band, Emeralds, an American touchstone of 2000s home-recorded psychedelic noise music. Consistent with his solo work is Hauschildt’s ability to coil his craft in precise, varied, and distinctly physical forms. Gently spinning arpeggios converse with post-industrial decay. Sonic fibers sway like pendulums from static melancholy to motorik bliss. Dissolvi, the artist’s first full-length with Ghostly International, engages sublimation from an ontological perspective: by dissociating the self. Hauschildt steps out from the singular path, for the first time in a traditional studio, to compose and arrange contributions from friends. As a result, his most collaborative work to date extends a vast, vibrating framework in which to consider the state of being. The album's title — a reference to cupio dissolvi, the Latin phrase meaning "I wish to be dissolved" — needn't be taken one-dimensionally or as purely solipsistic. It does, however, serve an apt reference. Physiological phenomena are of interest to Hauschildt. These back-of-mind ruminations find their way out. Songs are cerebral in orientation, but beyond explanation, the music is truly visceral.

Involuntary eye movement inspires the serene, sanguine-nearing-suspicious "Saccade." Minimalist techno impulses provide a stylistic through-line for Dissolvi. Understated synth phrases and drum grooves take hold in selective moments, like synchronistic structures onto which nebulous mists, like the rapturous voice of Gabrielle Herbst aka GABI on "Syncope," cling to and cloud, producing a dazzling rift in consciousness. The 7-minute centerpiece "Alienself" reiterates this creative logic, burbling like an amorphous body of water on a low-gravity planet, on the verge of dissolving, but never fully dematerializing. The album was constructed in Chicago (where Hauschildt now resides) and partially in New York. "Much of it was recorded in a windowless studio which removed elemental or seasonal references to time in the music," says Hauschildt. "The focus this time was on mixing the album and incorporating a broader set of instrumentation. I describe my compositional approach as being quasi-generative." Embracing new methods and philosophical curiosities, and in turn, expanding the range of his repertoire, Hauschildt proposes a fascinating and profoundly rich experience in listening, being, and deliquescing.

ELEPHANT MICAH GENERICANA ABOUT THIS RECORD Some thoughts from Joe O’Connell on his project's new album: The album title is Genericana. To me, that roughly means "the stuff from which stuff generates." It's a short hand way of evoking all the elements that I'm mashing up in this music. The idea is basically that it's this collision of genres, and collision of different versions of "American music." It's also an album that doesn't fit very neatly into a category of album — studio? live? remix? Maybe all, or none, of the above. This is a new mutant variety of Elephant Micah, better suited to survive the cultural climate of the moment in so-called "Trump's America." It lives!

I guess the lodestone in the process of making this was the kind of global avant garde mood that's prevalent in a lot of 1980s albums I admire. Things like Joni Mitchell's Dog Eat Dog and Arthur Russell's Calling Out of Context. These records where singers were making really eclectic and outward looking productions — writing *through* the process of recording, and literally *playing* with technologies that were totally new to them.

All the gear that I gathered to make the album was basically discarded or devalued. I got a bunch of stuff from Craigslist that interested me: a cheap FM synth, some Hindustani electronics, and an old three-head tape deck to use as a "poor man's space echo." The icing on the cake is a one-of-a-kind homemade digital synthesizer called "The Mutant". I worked with my brother to design it. He built it and coded it. The concept of the synth is parallel to the concept of the album itself. It's an electronic take on "folk" sounds (bends, drones, modal playing) and folk creative approaches (a cobbling together and reformatting of existing elements).

The band formed around fiery vocalist Linda Johnston, whose high-kicking stage antics make her one of Australia's most electrifying frontpeople, and her guitar demon brother Dannie "Bean" Johnston. After moving to Melbourne in the mid 90s, the band settled on their classic lineup of Brent "Sloth" Punshon on drums, and rock-solid bassist Mindy Mapp (previously of another cult 90s band, Brisbane's much-loved Fur). Little Ugly Girls played with the likes of Bikini Kill, Fugazi, and once memorably headlined over the White Stripes in Melbourne. Pantheon of Me was Bandcamp’s #4 record of the year in 2017 and they raved of that sound: “Cabral has it, from her careful sense of composition to her charismatic presence to her ability to communicate with her music straight through to the listener’s heart.” Her newest tracks “Hard to Please” and “My Other Voice” (a cover of Sparks’ 1979 symphonic disco track) pair together to reflect on bittersweet passions of an obsessive romance. “Hard to Please” swells through the excitement and pain of yearning to please an unsatisfiable lover, with “eyes of winter” but a promising “heart of spring.” The track presents as dance music but journeys through a swirling climax to something more spiritual. “My Other Voice” channels a more sinister state of romantic high, commanding obedience from this aloof lover, “you’re so independent but that’s going to change real soon, with my other voice I can destroy this room.” The sinister tone is juxtaposed with the elated music, that grooves celestially along, entrancing the listener and destroying the proverbial room with the power of SPELLLING’s voice, which elevates this cover beyond an homage and to a unique vision entirely its own.
