BIO The conflict and correlation between dark and light is a universal theme with a historically rich history. Musically, perhaps no band in the 21st Century has mined that relationship more consistently or effectively than Japan’s MONO. Across 10 albums in 20 years, MONO have convincingly reflected the quietest and most chaotic parts of life through their music. Their ever-expanding instrumental palette – which began in earnest in 1999 with the traditional guitar-bass-drums rock band setup – has evolved to include as many as 30 orchestral instruments. Now, on Nowhere Now Here, the band add electronics to their repertoire – partially inspired by guitarist/composer Takaakira ‘Taka’ Goto’s recent collaboration with John McEntire, the beguiling Behind the Shadow Drops. Nowhere Now Here also sees MONO’s first-ever lineup change, adding new drummer Dahm Majuri Cipolla (The Phantom Family Halo) to the core trio of Goto, Tamaki, and Yoda. Tamaki also makes her vocal debut here, singing into the shadows of vintage Nico on the poetically hazy “Breathe.” The unlikely career of MONO has taken them to virtually every corner of the planet, several times over. Those corners have all left indelible marks on their music, as it drills deeper towards the sound of feeling not quite human and all too human – often at the same time. For Dutch/Croatian songwriter and visual artist Marina Tadic, Pet Town represents time well spent in one’s own shell. Her second LP as Eerie Wanda (and first for Joyful Noise Recordings), Pet Town is a stripped down spectral manifestation, anchored by Tadic’s wistful lyrics and self possessed vocal delivery. Mixed by producer Jasper Geluk, the album is perched in warm, homespun recordings—live drums are replaced with handclaps, finger snaps, and a Roland-CR 78 drum machine, enhancing the music’s tactile and intimate headspace.

Using minimal recording techniques, Tadic shaped these ten songs on sheer intuition, while drawing inspiration from solitude: how it can be both a state of euphoria but also one of loneliness—of inner meditation and outer yearning. Echoing the sonorous gleam of West Coast pop, opening song "Pet Town" initially sounds like a love letter to one’s hometown, as both a tangible and emotional sanctuary. Between the lines, Tadic grapples with the sudden absence of shiny beacons that once enriched her life. "Hands Of The Devil" casts spells of attraction with its hypnotic flamenco cadence, whereas the humdrum amble of "Sleepy Eyes" evokes a rude awakening from those very spells.

What Shall You Say Tonight RELEASE BIO Although perhaps best known as lead guitarist for 4AD’s Merchandise, on his third solo LP, Guitar Dream, David Vassaloti’s abilities as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist are finally given an opportunity to shine, thanks in no small part to the production and engineering talents of co-conspirator and Merchandise frontman Carson Cox. A quasi-breakup album voiced through a protean pastiche of dejected characters, Guitar Dream finds Vassalotti at his most up-front and confessional. While 2015’s genre-spaning Broken Rope was interspersed with loops, samples and sound-collages, Guitar Dream features more straightforward songwriting that is reminiscent of Merchandise’s melancholic post-punk balladry, albeit with an added dose of gravitas. Fractured glam, keyboard trumpets and, yes, the occasional guitar solo prop up Vassalotti’s dynamic yet unpolished vocals, which are ghostified by blankets of delay and reverb.

RELEASE BIO Writhing Squares have been conjuring up cosmic slop from the Philadelphia underground for a few years now, mixing growling bass, motorik synthesis, and skronking sax into a heady brew of punk-laced progressive R’n’R. The duo of Daniel Provenzano (Purling Hiss, Spacin, Rosali & the Middlemen) & Kevin Nickles (Ecstatic Vision, Taiwan Housing Project) emerged in 2015 with their self-released “ Gemini Blues” 7-inch, following it up the next year with their debut album “In The Void Above” for the renowned Siltbreeze imprint. “ Out of The Ether ” is their sophomore effort, & first for Trouble In Mind. “ Out of the Ether ” kicks off with the metronomic throb of “Dirt In My Mind ’s Eye”, setting the stage for the album’s 5 tracks of minimal, droning ambience, overtaken at times by Nickles’ wailing, saxophone skronk; a mixture of the soulful runs of The Stooges’ Steve McKay & the no-wave stabs of James Chance. “ Steely Eyed Missile Man” picks up the pace, with a four-on-the-floor drive underneath Provenzano’s guttural basslines. “Bloodborne Hate and Black Book Mass” and side one closer “I Turned To The Mirror ” add the industrial menace of Cabaret Voltaire to a locked-in groove and lysergicly introspective lyrics. Album closer “A Whole New Jupiter ” takes up all of the LP version’s side two, slingshotting the listener over the event horizon and thru the center of a sonically sculpted black hole, it ’s relentless motorik dirge evolving over the course of the track ’s 19-minute run time into an abstract pulse before lurching back into the groove, riding it into the sun. “ Out of the Ether ” is released on compact disc, black vinyl, limited red vinyl for direct accounts, and available via digital retailers and streaming ser vices.

The 2011 breakthrough album by Zola Jesus, now available on gray-and-clear smoke vinyl. The album is available on Sacred Bones Records outside of North America for the first time ever. ORIGINAL 2011 BIO TEXT: In the last three years Nika Roza Danilova has gone from being an outsider experimental teenage noise-maker to a full fledged internationally celebrated electronic pop musician. It was a huge feat to accomplish, and despite her age (young), her geography (Midwestern, desolate), her accelerated scholastic requirements (high school and college were completed in three years each) and her diminutive physical size (4’11”, 90 lbs) she has triumphed. She has emerged as a figurehead-- a self-produced, self-designed, self-taught independent woman. Zola Jesus is not a singer; she is a musician. Zola Jesus is not a band; it is a solo project. That is not to say the people who have helped her along the way were not deeply important. Her irreplaceable live band, whose drummer Nick Johnson lends a hand on several tracks here, and her friend Brian Foote who coproduced this album in addition to the live string players (Sean McCann, Ryan York) who contribute here were all crucial in the process. Nika, however, is a woman who can command a room, any room, without needing a band, a stage, or even a microphone. Her voice is unmistakable; it cuts right to the core. After releasing 2016’s critically acclaimed Apocalipstick, Cherry Glazerr spent the next 18 months touring the world on their own steam. Between DIY All Ages venues, rock clubs, large festival stages, and massive theaters with some of the world’s best and most beloved bands (The Pixies, Flaming Lips, Slowdive, and The Breeders, among others), the band has really only stopped to work on their follow up, Stuffed & Ready.
