BIO Marking their 20th year as a band, Maserati returns with their first new album in five years. Produced by the band and mixed by Grammy-winning producer, John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, Swans, Angel Olsen), Enter The Mirror is Maserati’s most compelling mélange of triumphant guitar hooks, abstract synth-pop, and Wax Trax-inspired noise anthems. The gated drums of Phil Collins and chorus-drenched guitars of INXS were prominent influences on Enter The Mirror, paired to magnificent effect with the increasingly dystopian lyrical themes (which, ironically, were also massive influences on popular music in the 1980s, and feel ever more relevant now). In addition to longtime members Coley Dennis, Matt Cherry, Chris McNeal, and Mike Albanese, Maserati are joined by friends and collaborators, Bill Berry (R.E.M.), Owen Lange, and Alfredo Lapuz Jr. Self-reflection and loss of control as both a positive and negative aspect of modern existence is at the heart of Enter The Mirror. It is Maserati’s most efficient and cohesive album, and a monumental accomplishment for a band who have weathered many storms throughout their first two decades – and found the will to not just keep moving, but to move with style and chase. A limited number of Pearlescent Platinum Colored Vinyl (TRR338LP-C1; Edition of 1,000) are available while supplies last.

Kidbug Kidbug Overview Kidbug is Marina Tadic (Eerie Wanda), Adam Harding (Dumb Numbers), Thor Harris (Swans) and Bobb Bruno (Best Coast). Born from the romance of Tadic and Harding, together with Harris and Bruno they make self-described "cuddlebug sludge”, the harmoniously spiky offspring of Harding’s fuzzy guitar grunge-gaze and Tadic’s dreamy left field pop. Kidbug’s roots date back to December 2018. While at Joyful Noise Recordings’ Indianapolis label headquarters for their annual holiday party, Australian transplant Adam Harding was first introduced to the Croatian-born, Netherlands-based artist Marina Tadic. "We all convened at Postal Recording in Indianapolis to record Christmas songs for the label, and it just sort of grew from there,” Harding explains. When Tadic learned that Harding was also an accomplished video maker, she asked if he would make a video for Eerie Wanda before she was due to leave town. According to Tadic, the creative sparks started flying immediately, inspiring a series of long-distance musical love letters. The initial results were raw, personal, and naked in their emotional honesty, with a purity of expression that Tadic and Harding were eager to preserve. “We made a pact that whatever came out, we wouldn't second guess it,” says Harding. Adds Tadic: “We were inspired by the honesty and purity of John and Yoko singing love songs to each other. We wrote these songs for each other, and there was no reason to overthink them or purposefully obscure the lyrics, which made both the writing and recording process really fun and spontaneous.” To achieve full cohesion, strong rhythmic components were required: Best Coast’s Bobb Bruno was recruited for bass and additional guitar, and 2019 Joyful Noise Artist in Residence Thor Harris was tapped for drums and percussion. “Thor was the glue that brought everyone together. He was our first and only choice for a drummer,” Harding emphasized. The album was recorded in 3 days at Postal Recording in Indianapolis, with Tadic once again flying out from the Netherlands, and Thor Harris coming up from his home in Austin, Texas. Melvins’ legend Dale Crover makes a special guest appearance behind the kit on the album's closing track “Dreamy.” Kidbug’s debut LP is fueled by a deeply charged electrical love, and the band hopes to return that magical energy to listeners. “This album is a celebration of love. All of my songs with Dumb Numbers have been about endings, but Kidbug is about beginnings,” Harding shared. “We hope to bring love into the world with this album,” Tadic adds. “We dig love.”

Ann Taylor, The Mad Lads to The Staples Singers, Detroit to Atlanta, Kendrick to Pusha-T, Dale Warren’s singular voice is the lone constant. Beneath the ethereal beauty of his productions was a genius crippled by his unbridled id. His everevolving 24-Carat Black project spanned the ’70s, producing a masterpiece and an unfinished follow up. Discovered in a storage space were Warren’s 1980s demos cut with grown n’ sexy divas Princess Hearn, Vicki Gray, and LaRhonda LeGette right before his untimely death at the age of 50. III is an unfinished symphony that peels away the final layer of Dale Warren’s mysterious oeuvre.

Josey Rebelle is the deserving recipient of many accolades and awards, though her accomplishments are, as with all great artists, unquantifiable. Just as her style doesn’t fit neatly into a few-word package, Josey In Space combines classic and current sensibilities with a selection of exclusive and elusive music to elevate this mix beyond the ephemeral to the eternal. Drawing from a kaleidoscope of deeply felt and understood sounds, Josey studies and collocates history as well as directing its course. With her sets on the air and in the club, Josey urges you to listen close to the story, to feel the energetic shifts in style, sound, speed, mix; up, down, rough and smooth. Josey’s sets are motivated by the ineffable and inevitable dance, mess and sweat of life: “eclectic,” an oft-applied catchall, just scrapes the surface of this scope and vividness. The reciprocal relationship between radio and club DJing are integral to Josey’s practice. Joining Rinse FM in 2011 with a covert 3 - 5 am Thursday slot, her now venerated weekly Sunday show delivers a universe in two hours, filled with selections from across the spectrum - house and techno, breaks, jazz, soul and analogous electronic music, to start - and carries the voices of emerging artists and their communities. Evincing a lifelong commitment to ravenous, compulsory listening, and encouraging this in others, Josey furthers a localized lineage tracing back to the golden era of London pirate radio. Plenty of lore is out there about Josey’s journey as a club DJ with a glinting reputation the world over. Her style is broadly and essentially UK (especially from a US vantage), in content and mixing. But she doesn’t simply follow a school; her methods are always responsive to the track at hand. Josey lets “the tunes speak – or shout, or whisper – for themselves [giving] them space to breathe.” Within this framework she allows tracks with both complementary and dissonant elements to meet, run over each other, break apart, or just brush each other by. Josey in Space reflects this finesse and versatility across twenty selections, a number of which will see their digital debut inside and outside of Josey’s mix as standalone cuts. DJ Marcelle’s outre dub clatter bookends the

plot, featuring up-and-comers of club sound like rRoxymore, AFRODEUTSCHE and Molinaro alongside consistent innovators like Titonton Duvante, Nubian Mindz, Hieroglyphic Being, Uschi Classen and Robert Owens. Tenesha The Wordsmith’s afro-futurist visioning and poetic eulogy “I Dream So Loud” invokes a healing mantra at the outset, and emphasizes an imaginative resilience embedded in the unequivocally black history of dance music. Moving knowledgeably through this unfolding history, Josey in Space celebrates US house and techno history along with UK soulful bass, breaks and beyond as in Loraine James’ “Glitch Bitch,” or the second-to-last tenderly offered “Praises” from Lex Amor. On the 12” version, four essential tracks are lifted from the mix for DJready use: Fotomachine’s spectral techno transporter “BBoy”; the warm, broken-beat sashay of Shy One’s “Route II Romeos”; Access 58’s 1999 instigator “Jazz Drama”; and the uplifting jungle tune “Dance Of The Sarooes (Nookie Remix)” from Rogue Unit. Available as a track-focused 12”, mixed CD and mixed / unmixed digital version, Josey in Space is the second outing in a new Beats in Space series celebrating dance music’s form and informality, and the selectors guiding its evolution. Artist Highlights • Josey Rebelle is a highly acclaimed DJ, whose 2019 BBC essential mix was voted as the best BBC mix of the year. Josey In Space marks her first official mix release. • Josey In Space features two original songs from her London crew – Fotomachine’s “BBOY” and Shy One’s “Route II Romeos” – and the rest of the 20 strong tracklist features music previously unavailable on digital platforms. • Josey was recently profiled on the cover of DJ Mag: https://djmag.com/longreads/ josey-rebelle-quiet-storm • Josey maintains a monthly party at the Pickle Factory in London as well as a monthly radio slot on London’s Rinse FM. • Josey will tour throughout 2020, playing key festivals including Dekmantel, Dimensions, Field Day, and Primavera Sound.

Guerilla Toss

Jay Glass Dubs vs Guerilla Toss Now available on vinyl for the first time. From the 2017 press release: DFA Records and Bokeh Versions have teamed up for a joint release - a reworking of the freaky post-punk stylings of Guerilla Toss by Athens, Greece-based musician and producer Dimitris Papadatos, a.k.a. Jay Glass Dubs. The EP comes on the heels of the former’s latest record, GT Ultra, which was released in June 2017. Jay Glass Dubs vs Guerilla Toss turns the hyper-bouncy pop and deeper, darker tracks of GT Ultra into four, stripped-down dub ruminations, each one spacier and weirder than the last. The frenetic, zany tempos of songs like “Skull Pop” and “Can I Get The Real Stuff?” are transformed into slow, viscous existential crises that focus in on Kassie Carlson’s echoing vocals. Jay Glass Dubs works headphone magic with reverberating percussion and slinky basslines, as always keeping one foot in dub’s past but both eyes on its horizon. Artist in demand and Bokeh-affiliate Patrick Savile’s artwork eloquently articulates the ethos of the EP – speedy, psychedelic textures are blurred and made malleable, gracefully reflecting the sounds of original album through a hazy prism. If you know Bokeh, you know Jay Glass Dubs. This Guerilla Toss soundclash hints at new sonic territory that he’s been quietly exploring in email threads with Bokeh Edwards. The trip-hop stylings and mechanical dub futurism foreshadow his debut 12” which will be out at the tail end of 2017.

EL MICHELS AFFAIR feat. BOBBY OROZA REASONS b/w HIPPS Big Crown is proud to present this must have two-sider from El Michels Affair. The A side “Reasons” is a collaboration that is sure to get all the Soul collectors very, very excited. Last time Bobby Oroza was in New York El Michels invited him to the studio to cut a tune together. Bobby took this opportunity to take us all on a journey to the existential side of his mind on this gorgeous and ethereal ballad covered in lush guitar notes. Oroza’s voice finds it’s place perfectly over the track, talking us through the human struggle and still creating that energy that is uniquely his and has become his signature sound.

The B side “Hipps” is pulled from El Michels Affair’s recently released modern masterpiece Adult Themes. In a day and age when the album format is being taken over by singles and playlists Adult Themes is a record that truly has to be listened to in the context of the whole album to be understood. This made it hard for us to pick a tune from it for this 7”. “Hipps” cuts in with a crushing drum beat and is quickly joined by the unmistakable horn arrangements that Leon has become famous for. In true EMA fashion the arrangement on this piece can’t be touched, closing one’s eyes and listening will induce anyone to a vivid visual fantasy. It turns out to be something of a chapter from a book, and we recommend you treat yourself to the front to back experience of Adult Themes.

BACAO RHYTHM & STEEL BAND MY JAMAICAN DUB b/w THE HEALER Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is back with another crushing two-sider that is guaranteed to set dancefloors on fire and get heads nodding around the globe. The mysterious steel pan outfit hailing from Hamburg, Germany has become a staple in DJ sets from Europe to Japan, from the US to Brasil, and anywhere else these tunes have found their way to speakers. They have released a slew of classic 7”s and two critically acclaimed full length albums. With that they have set a high bar for themselves, one clearly they intend on pushing higher with this new offering. Side A is BRSB’s take on Grace Jones’ nightclub classic “My Jamaican Guy”. They take the tune to a new height from the first beat, laying down an infectious groove that will get people out of their seats immediately. Heavy duty drums and bass shake the speakers through the intro then the pans reveal what they are covering as they play the instantly recognizable top line of the original. Rhythm guitar, heavily echoed percussion hits, and the different pan sets all combine to make this yet another instant classic from Bacao.

CATALOG NUMBER: BCR097lp RELEASE DATE: 6/12/2020 FORMAT: 7” LP BOX LOT: 20 GENRE: Funk / Steel Drum / Hip Hop KEY MARKETS: New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Hamburg TERRITORY RESTRICTION: NONE VINYL NOT RETURNABLE

BRSB has received a lot of praise for their choices of covers. Occasionally reworking hits, but, most notably pulling the album cut gems from artists typically more championed by the underground. Well...here they go again, covering Erykah Badu’s homage to the late great J Dilla “The Healer”. This is the type of thing to make Spice Adams jump on his kitchen counter and scream. From the instant this comes on, necks will be snapping and faces will scrunch up as they take the original beat produced by Madlib and give it a run for its money. Shaking subwoofers with the eerie tremolo bass they replay E. Badu’s vocal melodies on the pans adding their own flourishes. Glockenspiel plays the downbeat and a clap like thunder keeps the two-step swaying, all coming together to make this another must have two-sider from Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band.

D E A T H VA L L E Y G I R L S BREAKTHROUGH LA’s Death Valley Girls have made a name for themselves by churning out a desert-blasted blend of rowdy proto-punk and primitive heavy metal steeped in cosmic idealism and third-eye consciousness. Their first new offering since tearing a hole in the sky with their 2018 album Darkness Rains comes in the form of a two-song seven-inch, “Breakthrough.”

TR ACKLISTING 1. Breakthrough 2. Rock ‘N’ Roll / EGA

The title track is a cover by Atomic Rooster, though the band discovered the track through a rendition by Nigerian outfit The Funkees. With its grimy guitar riffs, fire-and-brimstone organ, and combative chorus, it’s as if the song was originally written with Death Valley Girls’ brand of stark transcendental rock in mind. But it wasn’t just the pulse and melody that drew the band to the song. “It spoke to me because of the lyrics about breaking free from

an invisible prison… we all have invisible or visible prisons we are trapped in,” says vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Bloomgarden. The song discovery coincided with the band’s interest in Damien Echols of West Memphis 3 and his ability to endure his imprisonment by learning to astral project through meditation. The b-side is another cover—a ramped up version Daniel Johnston’s loud-quiet-loud anthem “Rock ‘N’ Roll / EGA.” It’s a total rager, but it’s also a bittersweet song for Death Valley Girls as they had the rare privilege to briefly serve as Johnston’s backing band. Ultimately, the two songs have a deep and profound connection to Death Valley Girls, both in their spirit and in their aural alignment.

Deerhoof

Future Teenage Cave Artists Overview

"Deerhoof is a weapon loaded with the future." - Agustín Fernández Mallo, Spanish physicist and writer Over the past couple of years while making their new album, Deerhoof have been asking themselves if there was any music they could create that expressed how our rapidly emerging future might actually feel. The band envisioned an album about people haunted by memory of a lost world and of every failed attempt to save it. People already living outside the system, already having practiced new ways of life required for survival—these hopeful heroes are Deerhoof’s inspiration. These are the Future Teenage Cave Artists. Faithful listeners will recognize a certain alienated but transformational figure who shows up in Deerhoof songs going back to their earliest days. Take the narrator of “The Perfect Me” from 2007’s Friend Opportunity: an orphaned but eager soul attempting to entice other wounded wanderers who might lack a home, a clan, a family, a history. But on Future Teenage Cave Artists our protagonist is threatened by terror lurking around every corner. Add to that the fact that our 'cast-off queen,' our 'maniac,' our ‘terrible daughter’ is watching themselves get orphaned in real time, by an older generation in power that would seemingly rather see life on Earth destroyed than let go of archaic systems of capital. Like a lot of the music they have released over the last quarter-century, the Deerhoof of Future Teenage Cave Artists (Satomi Matsuzaki on bass and vocals, Ed Rodriguez and John Dieterich on guitars, and Greg Saunier on drums, vocals and piano) stitches together fragments of 'r&b' and 'classic rock' and transforms them into a new language of revolution, forgoing verse-chorus structures for dream logic and blind intuition. But what makes this album different is its intimacy—the blues riffs and slide guitars are joined by rusty pianos and whispered three-part harmonies. In this sense, FTCA inverts the formula of Deerhoof’s last album, Mountain Moves, which invited a wide community of collaborators to band together in an open celebration of solidarity. The new one, on the other hand, is borne of self-isolation and deprivation. It’s the sound of a sparkling, manic musical intelligence being disconnected from a nourishing public and devouring itself inside its own cocoon, attempting metamorphosis. At times FTCA indeed sounds as if the band had in fact retreated to the caves, recording with unreliable electricity and insecure food supplies. Guitar pedals malfunction mid-take, reverbs chop off mid-tail, drum fills get abandoned mid-phrase. Some musical moments, as gorgeous and touching as anything Deerhoof has ever written, stop short for no apparent reason, giving way to queasy smudges of sound. Many of the instruments and voices were recorded with nothing more than the built-in mic of a laptop. Harsh splices make no effort to hide the seams. Hard panning leaves many of these imperfections weirdly naked in the mix.

In this way FTCA joins a long and storied lineage of pop records that expose the insular and reclusive nature of the recording process itself. Like Let It Be, There's a Riot Goin' On, or Sister Lovers, this record is its own "making-of." Absence is a central character in the drama. For every heartwarming melody or pile-up of parade drums or shard of loopy guitar noise, there is musical acknowledgement of the toll that constant threat of cataclysm takes on mental health. These are sonic and lyric funerals for a way of life that is never coming back. There are raucous toasts to the departed in high style, as sassy and spasmodic as anything they've done—see Side A; there are moments of profound sadness, maximally small, descending into madness, shrieking with loss—see Side B. All funerals remind us that life goes on, somehow. In that time after the end times, it’s not only the food systems, energy systems, and political systems that will have to be rebuilt. Myths, stories, and rituals we use to make sense of the world are up for revision, too. The music of Future Teenage Cave Artists asks: How does one adapt—mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually—to an increasingly threat-filled and rapidly shifting world? Might our networks of mutual aid be our best example of civilization? Our DIY basement shows the real high art? One answer might be found in the two-and-a-half decades that this improbable combination of personalities and backgrounds we call Deerhoof has spent on stage, cultivating agility, quick-wittedness, and a loose approach to improvisation. This is a record about resilience and the persistence of hope in a future beyond any reasonable justification for it. Like so many young people today, Deerhoof seems to be already living in that future.

HOLY HIVE FLOAT BACK TO YOU Big Crown Records is proud to present Float Back To You, the debut full length album from Holy Hive. Homer Steinweiss, the Brooklyn based soul/funk drummer, always had a soft spot for folk music. Paul Spring, a young idealist folk singer traveling the country with his guitar, always had a beautiful falsetto in his back pocket. A family introduction would lead to Homer producing a few solo records of Paul’s, which would eventually lead to the creation of Holy Hive. The two enlisted Joe Harrison on bass and started out recording their first tunes as a group. A tour with soul legend Lee Fields would turn out to have an unexpected effect on their sound as they played their material to crowds of soul fanatics looking to dance. It was this realization that forced the next step in their evolution and gave birth to a sound unique to Holy Hive, a sound that walks a line so perfectly it necessitated a new genre, Folk Soul. Homer has been drumming professionally since 2000 and has provided the back beat to records by Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars, The Jonas Brothers, and Lady Gaga to name a few. He has toured the world over with soul acts like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and The Arcs. With all of that under his belt, Holy Hive is the first band that is truly his own and you can hear that it is close to his heart. Paul is from a small town in Minnesota where he spent his formative years studying Ancient Greek mythology and practicing classical guitar. He toured the states for years with only the company of his guitar, playing solo shows to make ends meet and occasional library gigs promoting his self released children’s record, Home Of Song.

Listening to their debut album, their different experiences and influences have all shown up. From the heavy downbeat of the lead single “Broom” to their intimate cover of Honeybus’ “Be Thou By My Side,” Float Back To You showcases their songwriting prowess as well as their impeccable musicianship. Spring’s fondness for ancient mythology shows up in a few places on the album as well adding another level to their work. They adapt the Greek poet Sappho’s “Fragment 31” to music on “Embers To Ash” and completely rework the Irish folk tune “Red Is The Rose” into a modern day two stepper. Another standout track is the already classic “Oh I Miss Her So,” which first showed up on their 2018 Harping EP and features accomplished harpist Mary Lattimore and trumpet by Dave Guy of The Roots.

The symbiotic relationship of Homer and Paul has been likened to that of an oxpecker and a black rhino. Paul’s delicate falsetto and fluttering guitar rests atop Homer’s brawny drums in perfect harmony. There are many levels to Holy Hive, some of them show up on the surface, but some of them are like the album’s title track; you listen to a gorgeous love song only to find out later it is about coming home to your cat. This is perhaps the most telling of Holy Hive, they are easy to like on first listen but spending time with their music will reveal a much deeper experience.
