Atlas Insurance Since 1953, Atlas Insurance has built a reputation for protecting clients with a combination of professional expertise and long-term relationships while supporting the community that has sustained its success. For the men on its leadership team, the company’s heritage is visible through their day-to-day focus on creating partnerships based on a deep understanding of clients’ needs. Over the years, Atlas Insurance has advised a diverse array of clients. Today, the agency’s commercial growth largely comes from customized programs for community associations, construction, bonded contractors, hospitality, healthcare and not-for-profits. In addition, Atlas’ Private Client Group addresses the more complex personal insurance needs of high net worth individuals with unique and often complicated risk profiles. The agency’s sister company, Atlas Financial, builds on the client offerings by providing employee benefits and financial planning. Supporting the community is a key shared corporate value with an emphasis on volunteerism at all levels of the organization. Atlas employees help numerous local charitable organizations in leadership roles and fundraising. Their focus for the remaining year are All Faiths Food Bank, building homes for Habitat for Humanity, donating school supplies for children at SPARCC and volunteering at the Special Olympics. As President of Atlas Insurance, Rob Brown leads the company his grandfather founded by example. Brown, a Certified Insurance Counselor, places a strong emphasis on ensuring promises are kept and maintaining effective communication with clients. Although he never was pressured to enter the family business, Brown saw it as an excellent way to apply his knowledge to solve problems and benefit others. He has been very active with many not-forprofit organizations and currently serves on the board of the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, whose mission to conserve land particularly resonates with the avid outdoorsman. Vice President and Managing Partner Darren Howard uses his more than 25 years of experience working with business owners and community associations to develop personalized plans to manage their unique risk. In addition to advising his own roster of clients he oversees agency operations. The fourth generation Sarasota native has been a partner at Atlas Insurance since 1994. He earned a bachelor’s degree in risk management and insurance from Florida State University and has a Certified Property and Casualty Underwriter designation. Howard has passionately dedicated years of service to the Sarasota youth sports community and has been an ongoing supporter of Cardinal Mooney High School Athletics. Orion Marx, Partner for Atlas Financial and Atlas Employee Benefits, switched college majors at the University of Florida from math to finance when he realized he liked helping people achieve their goals. For more than 20 years, Marx has been helping high net worth individuals, business owners and not-for-profits do just that. Whether they need employee benefits, personal finance and retirement or life insurance, he is with them every step of the way, from planning through implementation. Marx believes strongly in giving back and has spent many years volunteering with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. As a Vice President and Partner who oversees Atlas Insurance’s sales team, Tommy Kochis provides risk management services to a variety of industries. Kochis has Certified Risk Manager and Certified Insurance Counselor designations and particular expertise in community associations, construction and complex property risks. A 40-year Sarasota resident, he serves actively with the Community Associations Institute, Building Manager International and other not-for-profits. Herb Hofmann Seeing someone being bullied or taken advantage of has always roused Herb Hofmann’s sense of injustice and helped lead him into a career as an attorney. His passion for righting a wrong, combined with a great respect for the power of the U.S. Constitution and a devotion to serving clients, has earned Hofmann recognition for excellence in the legal profession. Focusing his practice on cases of wrongful death or severe personal injury, he is a partner of Morgan & Morgan, a well-recognized nationwide personal injury law firm, and Managing Partner of its Sarasota office. To Hofmann, the firm’s tagline, “For the People,” is more than just a slogan. It is a guiding principle that takes on additional meaning, since Sarasota is his hometown and he has strong ties to the community. His family moved here when he was three years old, and he is a graduate of Pine View High School. “I wish I had a magic wand that would make people feel better. We can’t give back what they lost, which is their health, but the law gives them a voice and the path toward justice,” Hofmann says. “We help an individual make a legitimate decision, based on facts, whether to go forward with the risks of a jury trial. If they are wholeheartedly committed to their cause, and we have the case to support it, we have no hesitation. Justice is our cause.” Hofmann manages his own caseload along with overseeing the operation of the entire office, which he opened in 2014 with one staff person. Today, it has grown to include three attorneys and 25 staff. Hofmann joined Morgan & Morgan in 1999 after having worked as a personal injury attorney for two local law firms and prosecuted criminals as an Assistant State Attorney for the 12th Judicial Circuit. One of the benefits he sees in working with Morgan & Morgan is the depth of the firm’s financial resources. “Even a small trial can cost a minimum of $15,000, and many smaller firms can’t afford to go to trial as we do. Sometimes it’s been years since your average attorney has actually tried a case,” he says. “With our resources, we can afford to pursue cases and help individuals fight profit-driven corporations and insurance companies. What I really like about what we offer here is that people get the services of a home-town lawyer with the resources of a national firm.” Hofmann has frequently presented seminars on effectively prosecuting a personal injury claim to plaintiff’s attorneys across the country, and he is widely recognized for his work. He has been selected for membership in the National Trial Lawyers Top 100, a recognition given to less than one percent of attorneys. Hofmann also currently serves as treasurer for the American Board of Trial Advocates, which is dedicated to maintaining high standards within the legal profession. He has received the prestigious AV® Peer Review Rating by Martindale-Hubbell, along with a host of awards, including Florida’s 2015 Ten Best Personal Injury Attorneys for Client Satisfaction, 2015 Top Lawyers of Tampa, and the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorney’s Top 10 list for Florida. Although work claims a significant amount of his time, he also is dedicated to enjoying as much time as possible with his wife and young daughter. “I’m a ‘what you see is what you get’ person,” he says. “I’m all-in whatever I’m doing, and when I’m not working, they are what I live for on the personal side.” Men on the SCENE 2016

Dr. David Sax When Dr. David Sax founded University Park Dermatology and Medical Spa 16 years ago, his vision was to create a comprehensive dermatology practice with a family feel and Ritz Carlton-level service. Sax has brought that vision to life by combining leading edge technology and proven methodologies with highly personalized attention to patients’ needs. “Because our practice is very comprehensive, we can address many issues right in the office, whether it is a newborn’s rash, teen acne, a skin cancer exam or cosmetic treatments,” Dr. Sax says. “We keep up with the latest technologies and stay informed about the newest trends.” That powerful combination has been so thoroughly embraced by patients that Dr. Sax has opened a second location in Apollo Beach. His objective is to maintain his hands-on approach to ensuring each team member always delivers a high level of service and to grow while retaining the personal touch of a smaller practice. “Service is important. While I was in my residency, we got a behind-the-scenes view of how the Ritz Carlton provides excellent service. That made an impression on me, and I learned how to take care of patients beyond the medical aspects,” he says. “I like to get to know patients and their families and hear about their lives, travels, work and passions.” Dr. Sax also brings an impressive level of education and experience to his patients. He is a board-certified dermatologist and a Phi Beta Kappa honors graduate of Pennsylvania State University with bachelor’s degrees in computer science and molecular cell biology. Dr. Sax graduated from Thomas Jefferson University Medical College, completed his dermatology residency at the University of Michigan and did an additional year of training in MOHS surgery for skin cancer treatment in Columbus, Ohio. He is passionate about skin cancer prevention and early detection. He regularly provides free skin cancer screenings in his office and at various venues throughout the community. Although his degree in computer science is not the norm for medical professionals, it has proven highly useful as advanced medicine has merged with technology. Dr. Sax takes full advantage of state-of-the-art digital cameras that magnify suspicious moles allowing minute changes to be detected, which provides a better determination of whether it should be kept under observation or if a biopsy is needed. Likewise, University Park Dermatology is one of the few practices on Florida’s West Coast with the FDA-approved MelaFind ® optical scanner and database whose accuracy in identifying skin cancers is more than 98 percent. His approach to addressing cosmetic needs is just as comprehensive and high tech. Patients may receive Botox ®, fillers, chemical peels, microneedling, dermaplaning, dermabrasion, facials and more. A wide range of advanced lasers are available, including those that allow rapid removal of chest and back hair more comfortably, improve the appearance of surgical scars, acne marks and stretch marks, and eliminate brown spots. Dr. Sax also offers Cool Sculpting ®, a noninvasive, FDA-approved fat reduction process with little or no downtime. “It has been shown to remove up to 21 percent of fat without surgery,” he says. “I tried it on myself and saw visible improvement.” With busy practices in two locations, free time is a scarce commodity for Dr. Sax. While he enjoys traveling and tennis, with a 13-month-old and 16-year-old twins, family is his main focus, although he does find time to get in some exercise with pickleball. In a way, Dr. Sax has come full circle since his twins were born at the same time he was establishing his practice. “Now,” he quips, “someone can come to me for the latest skin care or advice on baby training.” Men on the SCENE 2016
Scott Anderson When Scott Anderson joined the Jewish Housing Council Foundation (JHCF), his goal was to give back to an organization he loves and to enhance the lives of present and future residents of the Kobernick-Anchin-Benderson senior living campus. As JHCF’s Vice President of Philanthropy, Anderson brings 10 years of experience with the highly regarded Gulf Coast Community Foundation and credits the many philanthropists with whom he worked there with truly teaching him what it means to give back. Kobernick-Anchin-Benderson, Sarasota’s only rental senior campus offering all levels of living from independent to skilled nursing and secure memory care and rehabilitation, has been undergoing renovations. Current plans call for adding a multipurpose room with a 250-seat auditorium for concerts, plays and lectures and a Center for Health Promotion and Illness Prevention for residents and members of the community. To support those and other initiatives, Anderson will oversee JHCF’s two signature fundraisers. Keeping the Dream Alive to support The Benevolent Care Program and ensure that qualifying residents can stay even if they outlive their funds, and Eight over Eighty honoring eight community activists over the age of 80, who are still making a difference. Anderson was relocated to Sarasota 26 years ago by GTE, now Verizon, to extend wireless service to the area. Growing up, his parents instilled in him the importance of community service, which he expressed at a young age as President of both the Student Body at the University of Miami and Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. The person who inspired him the most, however, was his late niece, who always looked at the positive side of life despite battling brain cancer, to which she succumbed at age 9. Anderson has served on the Boards of many nonprofits, including JFCS, the Child Protection Center and Embracing Our Differences. He is also an avid collector of antique American timepieces, collects autographs and is a genealogy buff. Men on the SCENE 2016
Dr. Sumeet Bhanot Family ties have always been paramount in the life of Dr. Sumeet Bhanot. Dr. Bhanot was born into a military family in Chandigarh, India, while his father was on the battlefield. He grew up in India till the age of 8 when he immigrated to the United States after his father fell ill and needed advanced medical care. This exposure to the medical field is what inspired him to become a physician. To realize his dream, dedication and perseverance earned scholarships to prestigious schools such as NYU and Yale University. This life altering experience fostered the mettle that has shaped him into the surgeon he is today. Dr. Bhanot relishes the quality time spent with his wife and three children at home with family as well as the relationships he has cultivated with his patients in the intimate atmosphere he has built in his facial plastic surgery practice in Sarasota over the past 13 years. Dr. Bhanot’s passion is surgery for the aging face, which includes facelift, neck lift, eyelid lift and brow lift, as well as cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty and facial reconstructive surgery. He believes that the true art of plastic surgery achieves dramatic rejuvenation for a naturally beautiful, refreshed, youthful appearance. Dr. Bhanot is double board certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as Head and Neck Surgery. The rigorous training he underwent in the management of the complex anatomy of the head and neck exclusively has honed his skills in the art of facial plastic surgery. Dr. Bhanot’s blend of artistry and expertise, combined with a compassionate, warm manner, has earned him ranking as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for five consecutive years. Men on the SCENE 2016
Jonathan Boos Jonathan Boos’ entrepreneurial life started like so many others with a flash of problemsolving insight. In his case, it was how to keep his new shirt’s collar from making him look like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Boos’ solution to that common collar problem launched his men’s accessories company, Würkin Stiffs, and garnered him and his products national attention, including a famously-entertaining appearance on Shark Tank with his patented magnetic Power Stays and a shout-out for his colorful Knotz cufflinks in O, The Oprah Magazine. Power Stays, the company’s first product, allows the well-groomed man to adjust his collar to the perfect spread. The company also sells accessories ranging from lapel pins and tie bars to leather goods online and in 1,000 stores nationwide, including Nordstrom. Boos grew Würkin Stiffs from classically humble beginnings selling store to store on St. Armands Circle with his wife, Amie. He has held true to his purpose by providing innovative men’s accessories that manage to be cool and, in some cases, masculinely whimsical yet always extremely functional and simply designed. Würkin Stiff wallets are all RFID-blocking to keep digital information private, and his tire-tread-design Döppel travel bags are made from a single piece of silicone so they can be washed out if something leaks inside and to reduce the chance of any leakage escaping. Always creative and entrepreneurial, even as a child, Boos is passionate about encouraging others to dedicate themselves fully to pursuing their own ideas and passions. Having grown up working hard in his parents’ landscaping business, he is looking forward to continuing expansion for Würkin Stiffs into a lifestyle brand with a partnership or onboard investors. With two young children at home, when he’s not a workin’ stiff himself, Boos savors time spent with family and on his labor of love–renovating a vintage 1928 Sarasota home. Men on the SCENE 2016
Vinnie Burns & Michael Brandon Two men with world-class proficiency in tennis and sports performance training are bringing new excitement to one of Sarasota’s most iconic tennis and fitness clubs, the Bath and Racquet Athletic Club. Tennis Director Michael Brandon and Director of Sports Performance Vinnie Burns bring years of experience with the world-renowned IMG Academy to Bath and Racquet Athletic Club. Brandon and Burns are driven by a desire to create an inclusive environment that supports people of all ages and abilities to achieve their athletic and fitness goals. Brandon is a former number-one-ranked junior doubles player, who joined the club after eight years at the IMG Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy where he worked with many Division 1 players. He also personally coached tennis notables Victoria Duval and Stephanie Nauta. Brandon aims to know every member and ensure they connect with others at their level for a superior experience at the club. Brandon oversees all tennis programs at the club, conducts classes, provides individual lessons and keeps a close eye on the Tennis 123 program for adult beginners, and is instrumental in establishing the Level Up assessment that is unique to Bath and Racquet Athletic Club. He has also developed an allnew youth program and works hand-in-hand with Buddy Up Tennis for children with Down syndrome. Time away from the club can find him dining with friends or hanging out with his miniature Dachshunds. Improving sports performance and preventing injuries are priorities for Burns, who was a four-time football letterman and inducted into the Virginia Tech Legends of Lane Stadium. He was lead sports performance coach for soccer and tennis at IMG and has worked with athletes across all major professional and college sports, including hockey superstar Alex Ovechkin. Burns enjoys helping athletes of all levels from youth and weekend warriors to professionals seeking high-quality, sports-specific training and fitness. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his rare xoloitzcuintli dogs and continuing his education in the areas of science and world travel. Men on the SCENE 2016
Mark Caithness Mark Caithness founded Caithness Construction 20 years ago and one way he measures success as a custom residential builder is by passing the “Publix test.” It’s something he does frequently as people stop to tell him how much they love the homes he built for them or that they want him to construct their new home. His reputation for great houses is grounded in Caithness’ philosophy of going above and beyond and building in quality that can’t be seen or measured by cost per square foot, such as heavy duty trusses, Zip Roof System, and 2 by 6 Timberstrand studs for second stories. He is a hands-on business owner who walks through every home during the framing stage, adding arches where needed or embellishing with a tray ceiling to enhance the home, often at no cost to his client. Caithness Construction is a design-build firm that works in a variety of styles and price ranges across the greater Sarasota area. In addition to 15 homes currently under construction, Caithness is starting a nine-home subdivision, Gulf Harbor Estates, on the Island of Venice and is in the planning stages for a subdivision of patio homes on East Venice Avenue. He also builds on homeowners’ lots and is getting many requests for existing home tear-downs to replace with a new custom home. Caithness considers his company to be a family business, treating employees that way and striving to live up to their slogan, “We build a great home at a fair price and have fun doing it”. The team includes his wife, Alicia, who handles marketing, a great staff and skilled construction team, including subcontractors who have been with him for 15 years. Being in the construction business is not like work for Caithness who spent 10 years as a stockbroker before entering construction. He had renovated houses while in college and thoroughly enjoys the sense of accomplishment he feels when creating something tangible and lasting. Men on the SCENE 2016
Bob Carter Bob Carter has built an impressive, globe-spanning career helping nonprofit organizations reach a higher level of capability to achieve their missions. Capitalizing on decades of experience in institutional strategy and philanthropy, Carter has worked with some readily recognizable names – such as National Geographic Society and World Vision – often at “interesting times” arising from crisis, need or opportunity. Today, he, his leadership team, and a core group of experts at the firm, Carter, help nonprofits nationally, internationally and regionally with farranging needs from feasibility studies, restructuring and strategic planning to governance issues and temporary campaign management. Working as a teacher of British and American literature early in his career, Carter quickly showed an aptitude for fundraising and organized the development office for his school in Baltimore, which led to his service as Director of Development for two schools at the Johns Hopkins University. Impressed by his abilities, Carter was recruited by Ketchum, then one of the nation’s two largest fundraising firms, where he worked for 26 years, the last 15 years as President and CEO. After shepherding Ketchum’s sale, he joined the Omnicom Group and commuted from his home on Anna Maria Island to London to build an international presence for one of its companies prior to founding Bob Carter Companies with a colleague in 2011. The firm was rebranded as Carter in 2015. Over the years, Carter’s volunteer and business lives have blended. He has chaired seven boards, including Mote Marine Laboratory (where he now is Chair-emeritus), and serves as immediate past Chair of the National Aquarium board. His volunteerism also includes past board membership of Indiana University Lily Family School of Philanthropy. Carter loves the outdoors and the lifestyle on Anna Maria Island where he and his wife, Carol, take active roles in making their community a better place. Men on the SCENE 2016
Brian Carter Brian Carter is celebrating his 20th year in accounting this year. Carter became a CPA because he always enjoyed and had an aptitude for math and thought, like many others, that accounting was about math. Joining Mauldin and Jenkins out of college, he soon discovered that problem-solving and analytical thinking also are key skills when working for a full service CPA firm that looks beyond traditional financial services to help clients achieve their goals. While the firm works within a wide array of industries, this is especially true for nonprofit organizations, a niche in which the firm and Carter specialize. In addition to providing auditing, accounting and tax services, Mauldin and Jenkins offers business consulting and benchmarking at which Carter also excels. He has a deep desire to help clients thrive by identifying their strengths and opportunities for improvement, and his goal is to develop relationships with clients that last for many years. Although Carter is a partner of the firm, he is hands-on with clients in keeping with the firm’s practice of high involvement by its partners. He conducts continuing education programs several times a year for nonprofit CEOs and CFOs on a range of subjects from financial to timely topics like the U.S. Department of Labor’s new overtime rule. Carter’s enthusiasm extends to his involvement in the community. He serves as President of the PACE Center for Girls, is on the boards of the South Florida Museum and Manatee Chamber of Commerce, and attends the more than 20 events Mauldin and Jenkins sponsors every year. He also participates in the office’s quarterly volunteer service project, which has ranged from stocking shelves at Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee to renovating houses for Habitat for Humanity. When he’s not working or volunteering, Carter enjoys a multitude of outdoor activities like boating, fishing and especially golf. Men on the SCENE 2016
David Cattin As owner of Cirrus Aviation, David Cattin still has the same passion for aviation that he had as a pilot in the French Air Force during the 1980s. After his discharge Cattin wanted to continue to fly, a very difficult task in Europe, and decided to come to Sarasota to become a commercial pilot. As a young man, Cattin worked hard to earn his FAA licensure, including his instructor ratings. He went on to instruct for his alma mater and when that school closed, Cattin opened his own flight school. Cirrus Aviation now is one of the top schools in the state and its Part 141 status means it meets the most stringent FAA requirements. It currently has a fleet of 11 planes for training and rentals and has recently split off a growing division as an aircraft maintenance facility, Aero Maintenance Services. Cirrus Aviation has trained pilots who currently work for various airlines around the world. Ground and flight training dovetail nicely to provide thorough training, and use of the full-motion flight simulator polishes off the experience. Cattin credits his dedicated staff as well as his wife and business partner, Nayda, who keeps things running smoothly. They have taken years to build a now-robust infrastructure, allowing training under the GI Bill, international students under proper visa status and FAA inspectors alike. Cattin keeps an open door for all and enjoys mentoring customers and guiding them through the industry, whether for pleasure or career. That personal attention has helped the school achieve a high satisfaction and success rate amongst customers. Cattin branches out into the community hosting aviation events, and launching a high school outreach initiative that includes Sarasota Military Academy. With an acute shortage of pilots, he believes this training provides a path to a well-paying and adventurous career for many. Men on the SCENE 2016

building his successful State Farm agency, Frederic Coffey, who is well known as “Ric”, isn’t remotely thinking of retiring. Coffey knows that continuing to grow the business provides more opportunity for him to help his community. He and his wife Kathy love Sarasota and strongly believe in giving back by actively supporting many local nonprofits, particularly those that help children and education. As a college student, being in a sales-oriented business was something he thought he would never do, let alone love. That perception changed when he met Kathy, who came from a State Farm family. Coffey discovered the focus was on helping people rather than selling insurance, which he found captivating and energizing. He is thankful for the opportunity to work with State Farm and be involved in the Sarasota community. Coffey established his agency by going door to door for leads, making thousands of phone calls, building the business one client at a time with a dedication to superior service. Although State Farm is the nation’s number one provider of home, auto and individual life insurance, the company also helps clients with many other high-quality products and services. The personal attention and guidance that Coffey and his staff provide keep his agency growing. Coffey’s satisfaction ultimately comes from helping people protect themselves and their families. He credits Kathy with being a big part of his success, thanks to her inspiration, insight and talent. He and Kathy are empty nesters cherishing time with their grown children and granddaughter. He challenges himself both mentally and physically. Coffey reads avidly, runs 5Ks to half-marathons and participates in triathlons to stay active. When asked about entering a more leisurely phase of life, Coffey says he is just getting warmed up and is enthusiastic about the future, believing the best is yet to come. Men on the SCENE 2016
Bruce Crissy Bruce Crissy looks forward to going to work every day. Being surrounded by beautiful and precious objects with a rich history is one reason. Crissy also enjoys helping customers find the perfect piece for their home or collection as well as the thrill of telling someone, à la Antiques Roadshow, that they have a very valuable item. Gaining the knowledge to distinguish what is good, better and exceptional across a wide range of antiques or collectibles takes a lifetime, and Crissy has more than 50 years experience, nearly 40 years in Sarasota as owner of Crissy Galleries. He started working with his mother when he was eight, began gathering objects to sell at a local flea market in his pre-teen years, and by the time he was 16, people were coming to him for appraisals. Visitors to Crissy Galleries’ showroom can browse a variety of 18th to 20th Century decorative furniture, artwork, and glass. There is a broad selection for the serious collector including Tiffany lamps, fine art, rare collectibles, and estate jewelry. Crissy also helps people who are downsizing find individuals who will cherish their lovingly assembled collections as much as they have. Crissy Galleries holds auctions and, because of the global connections he has made over the years, often is able to get favorable pricing for items sought out by European or Asian collectors. At heart, Crissy considers himself an information resource for those buying or selling antiques or collectibles. His enthusiasm is infectious, and customers often are sent home to try out pieces to see if they work. Over the years, Crissy also has used his expertise to help New College with fundraising auctions and served on Sarasota’s public arts committee. He is an avid traveler and animal lover, and enjoys catching – and releasing – fish, including a magnificent 200-pound tarpon. Men on the SCENE 2016
Christopher Davis, M.D., F.A.C.C. At age 7, Dr. Christopher Davis suffered a ruptured appendix which resulted in a nearly fatal month-long hospitalization. That experience forever changed his life. The gratitude and appreciation for the physicians who operated on him fostered his determination to pursue medicine. During his medical training, he developed an interest in interventional cardiology as this was an exciting field that made an immediate impact in the lives of patients with heart disease. In recent years, Dr. Davis, a board certified interventional cardiologist, has also developed an interest in integrative cardiology incorporating nutritional metabolic support in the treatment of his cardiovascular patients. Although he enjoys performing many lifesaving cardiovascular procedures, he is also passionate about the prevention of underlying heart and vascular disease as well as improving overall wellbeing. Spending time getting to know his patients is crucial to how Dr. Davis practices medicine. Understanding what is going on in their lives is important because classic cardiac symptoms — lack of energy, chest pain and shortness of breath — can also result from other issues such as sleep deprivation or anxiety. To address cardiovascular and other underlying issues, he also offers scientifically based therapies utilizing new technologies, such BEMER therapy, nutritional counseling, and naturopathic therapeutic options. Rigorously trained in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins University-Sinai Hospital, where he served as Chief Medical Resident, and fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease & Interventional Cardiology at the University of Virginia, Dr. Davis has been repeatedly listed as a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly. He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and also serves on many hospital advisory boards. Dr. Davis is a cross-fit training enthusiast, but devotion to his family, including two young daughters, and his strong faith in God are his top priorities. Men on the SCENE 2016
Timothy Del Vescovo Architecture and interior design go beyond being mere passions for Timothy Del Vescovo. They have become a way of life. Del Vescovo expresses his love for creating memorable spaces as founder of Del Vescovo Design Group, which specializes in residential, hospitality and mixed-use projects. He aims to inspire, evoke emotions and promote creativity in spaces that are healthy and sustainable. His projects set the stage for the daily rituals of his clients’ lives and vibrant community living. For example, the Courtyard at Citrus in Sarasota’s Rosemary District, currently under construction, typifies a mixed-use residential, retail, professional project that employs New Urbanism philosophies. Much of Del Vescovo’s work is informed by his avid interest in modern building technologies, architectural history and archaeoastronomy. His degrees in Architecture from The Catholic University of America and Interior Design from the International Academy of Design and Technology are strengthened by an extensive study program in Europe where he researched how The Masters employed light, shade, shadow, materials and form. Del Vescovo has experience with styles from traditional to modern. His projects have ranged up to $10 million waterfront estates to designing, managing, and drawing over 7 million square feet of domestic and international commercial space. In all cases, he and his team “check their egos at the door” to deliver designs that embody their clients’ vision. Intensely intellectually curious, Del Vescovo’s interests are wide-ranging. When he has time, he studies the far reaches of ancient history and current methodologies for sustainability and creating healthier environments. Illustrating his interest in being a good steward of the planet, Del Vescovo is partnering on a venture that utilizes advanced technologies for sustainably growing healthier foods. The technologies are tested for growing food in extreme environmental conditions. When he’s not working, or delving into the ancient past or conceivable future, Del Vescovo can often be seen riding his Harley in town and to places out east. Men on the SCENE 2016

Andrew Ford Andrew Ford is a second-generation antiques dealer who founded his first business 20 years ago and today has three businesses that serve a wide range of art enthusiasts and collectors. Two of the businesses, Ford Art and Antiques and Sarasota Trading Company, are in downtown Sarasota on the tony and historic Pineapple Avenue. Ford Art and Antiques purchases and sells fine art, sculptures and objects d’art, features local artists, and has a selection of oriental rugs and 18th and 19th Century French and Italian furniture. Sarasota Trading Company carries a wider range of furnishings from 17th Century antiques through 20th Century Art Deco and mid-century modern. The store also carries a wide variety of lighting, seating, mirrors and accessories. Ford’s third business, Sarasota Estate Auction, handles fine art, antiques, bronzes, jewelry and more. Ford enjoys connecting with buyers and sellers locally as well as managing estate sales or helping people downsize, working through real estate agents or directly with individuals. He also likes to connect artminded individuals through exhibitions of local artists’ works and client appreciation parties. Having grown up in Sarasota along with his longevity in the business, Ford has many connections locally and maintains national and international connections by exhibiting at the nation’s most prestigious art shows. While he grew up in the antiques business, Ford didn’t consider it as a career until returning to Sarasota after college. Seeing the opportunities here with the area’s emphasis on arts and culture, he started his first business and remains a handson participant today as an antique dealer, auctioneer and appraiser. Over the years, Ford has worked with many nonprofits and this year was one of the exclusive dealers participating in The Modern Show sponsored by the Sarasota Center for Architecture. Dr. Tracy Gapin Sarasota urologist Dr. Tracy Gapin’s deep desire to help his patients, paired with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, has kept him at the forefront of medical advancements in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Gapin has been a pioneer in the U.S. of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a minimally invasive option to treat prostate cancer that provides excellent outcomes and preserves patients’ quality of life with minimal side effects. Previously, surgery and radiation had been the only options, both carrying risks of post-treatment side effects, including sexual dysfunction and incontinence. HIFU has been performed worldwide for nearly 20 years and, after a 10-year clinical trial, now has FDA approval for use in the U.S. as well. Dr. Gapin has been successfully treating patients with HIFU in Nassau, Bahamas for many years, making him one of the most experienced urologists in the U.S. with the procedure. He also is at the cutting edge of advanced diagnostic techniques to better detect prostate cancer. Standard ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy techniques miss 30 to 50 percent of cancers. Using 3-D MRI imaging and targeted MRI/ ultrasound fusion biopsy, accuracy is boosted to 95 percent. He combines MRI technology with genomic profiling to identify patients who can potentially avoid unnecessary biopsies. Dr. Gapin is certified by the American Board of Urology. He joined Florida Urology Specialists in 2004 and founded Sarasota Prostate Care in 2012 to offer a specialized focus on prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and completed his general surgery internship and urology residency at the University of Florida. With two children under the age of three, Dr. Gapin and his wife, Sara, have a busy family life. He plans to enjoy golf and tennis again someday. Men on the SCENE 2016
Marc Grimaud Marc Grimaud’s culinary career was fueled by his enjoyment of spending time around the table with family along with a desire to own a business. Grimaud fulfilled that dream by acquiring Siesta Key Village’s only fine dining restaurant, Café Gabbiano, in 2012. He also has co-founded a new gourmet – and nutritious – meal preparation service, Evolution Food Co. Since taking the reins at Café Gabbiano in 2012, Grimaud has transformed the menu with an array of classic and contemporary Italian dishes whose ingredients are sourced as locally as possible. A new kitchen was installed, and he assembled a top-notch team, including an Italianborn chef and a pastry chef who make everything from bread and pastas to dessert from scratch. Seeing a culinary void in the market, Grimaud partnered with the owners of Real Fitness Sarasota to launch Evolution Food Co. to provide delicious, nutritious meals for busy people who work or go out to eat a lot and want healthier options for lunch and dinner. Not only does a nutritionist develop the meal parameters, but they are prepared by the same chef who creates the fine dining experience at Café Gabbiano. Growing up in Connecticut, Grimaud worked in the culinary field through high school and attended college at Central Connecticut University, where he earned a degree in business management. He then moved to Los Angeles, working for seven years in post-production for the film industry and steeping himself in LA’s vibrant culinary scene. Missing closer contact with his family, he and his wife moved here and now are raising two young children. Grimaud is grateful for the team surrounding him, which shares his vision and values, and for the support of the community. He gives back in many ways, supporting JFCS and other nonprofits and participating actively in the Sarasota-Manatee Originals events, including the Suncoast Food and Wine Fest. Men on the SCENE 2016

Rick Halloran Growing up in the small village of North Palm Beach, Rick Halloran’s family operated the local Hallmark store where nearly all residents shopped from time to time. That’s where Halloran learned the importance of community and building relationships, and the experience drove him to want a career that allows him to be impactful in his own community and provide stability for his family. That is exactly what he has done throughout his 27-year career in banking, nearly 12 years of which have been spent overseeing lending for community banks. Today, as Chief Lending Officer for Sabal Palm Bank, Halloran finds it very gratifying to be able to impact people’s lives significantly by helping them achieve their goals. As someone who always has been interested in learning about business, Halloran values the exposure he has gained over the years with a wide range of industries and businesses including real estate operations, agriculture, insurance, manufacturing, condominium associations, retail, and even airports and privatized correctional facilities. While he appreciates the extensive experience he gained with a large national bank, he is more attuned with Sabal Palm’s entrepreneurial approach and willingness to consider a broader range of local businesses for lending opportunities. Lending decisions at Sabal Palm are based heavily on the people involved and whether the plan is a good one. Community involvement is important to Halloran who serves on the board of the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and is active with the Gulf Coast Builders Exchange. He also is highly supportive of the Community Association Institute, where he has served as president, and InStride Therapy, where he is a past board member. Having grown up in Florida, Halloran’s perfect day starts with fishing and – after spending time on the water with family and friends – cooking a great meal for them and savoring their enjoyment of the dishes he has created. Jeffery Kin For the past 10 years, Artistic Director Jeffery Kin has been bringing art to the stage at The Players Theatre. As Kin enters his second decade, Sarasota’s community theater, the now-rebranded Players Centre for Performing Arts, also is entering a new phase with the sale of its home in downtown Sarasota and construction of a new three-theater complex as part of Lakewood Ranch’s expansion into Sarasota County. What won’t change is Kin’s irrepressible devotion to bringing audiences professional-grade community theater that also challenges actors, directors and designers and, perhaps, becomes part of a community conversation. Kin may have been born with the theater bug. As a five-year-old attending his older sister’s school play, he hopped on the stage to join the kick line. Growing up a “farm kid” in northwestern Ohio, Kin’s parents supported him with time off from chores, and he became involved in community theater at age 13. He earned a bachelor’s degree in performing arts from Otterbein University, moved to New York where he earned his equity card and performed in shows across the nation. When the polish wore off the Big Apple, Kin accepted a friend’s invitation to perform here and, in 1991, Sarasota became home. Kin has built a reputation for choosing shows that fulfill the Players’ mission to educate as well as entertain, and maybe even enlighten. This year’s Broadway season is devoted to stories from screen to stage, a reversal of the usual path from stage to film. Whether the play is newly minted or a time-honored favorite, Kin aims to “make it ours” and relevant in today’s world. What gives him the most satisfaction, though, is providing a home that allows others to grow in their craft and knowing he is helping make a difference in the lives of many. Men on the SCENE 2016

Laughlin provides value with a comprehensive understanding of the market and an aptitude for marketing. He offers advice on staging and focuses extra effort on producing high-quality photos and videos that capture a home’s intrinsic value for a powerful first impression that lasts. Although he is results-oriented on behalf of his clients, Laughlin is family-oriented and sensitive to the emotional side of real estate sales. All of his children and grandchildren now live in Sarasota, and he enjoys making memories with them in his own home. Laughlin is also community-oriented and helped to create some of Sarasota’s time-honored events like the Sarasota Film Festival and the Florida Wine Fest. He is an avid swimmer who competed in the 2013 Pan-American Masters Championship in Sarasota. Men on the SCENE 2016
Jared Light Among the things Jared Light loves about the jewelry business is that it is one of the few remaining U.S. industries still largely comprised of multigenerational family businesses. Light’s family is one of them, and growing up in Akron, Ohio, he began working evenings and weekends at Sterling Jewelers’ headquarters at age 12, in a Jared store at 14, and at 16 worked at Only Diamonds. After college he traveled the nation for a highly-respected diamond brand and then helped a friend grow a chain of stores from six to 14. Today, Light is co-owner of the PANDORA Store at The Mall at University Town Center with his mother, Pattie Light. Theirs is the only area store with PANDORA’s full line and is one of several successful jewelry businesses they have owned. They make strong business partners with complementary skills, often finish each other’s sentences, and are both laser-focused on customer service. Making the store inviting and customers feel welcome are priorities. They love gift wrapping and thanking their customers for their business personally. Light’s analytical skills are essential, and he primarily works on the financial and operational side. However, his contagious laugh and engaging personality give him a knack for helping customers as well. So does his belief in the PANDORA concept of affordable luxury that can be purchased for oneself or as a gift to tell a story or to create – and recreate – a beautiful style. Although he and his mom have a separate business in Jupiter, Florida, Light enjoys supporting local organizations about which he is passionate such as Equality Florida. He believes everyone should be able to have choices and feel equal, appreciated and cared about. He also loves to travel, spend time at the beach, and just hang out with his Labradoodle, Mr. Bentley. Giovanni Migliorini Giovanni Migliorini has been creating an authentic Italian dining experience at Café Epicure in downtown Sarasota since 2000. Migliorini and his partners are Italian-born, as are many of Café Epicure’s staff, who share Migliorini’s passion for their country’s cuisine and for the restaurant business itself. That passion shines through in the classic dishes on the menu that stay true to the original recipes and in his insistence upon using the freshest seasonal ingredients available, with simple preparations that are the trademarks of Italian cuisine. Migliorini is a familiar face at the restaurant, which is known as much for a friendly atmosphere where customers often are greeted by name as for its made-from-scratch pasta, sauces and pastry and stunning bar area. He and his partners, who also established the more formal Mediterraneo on upper Main Street in Sarasota in 1996, are planning to replicate their success at a new restaurant, Frittata, on Palm Avenue, just two blocks from Café Epicure. Frittata will focus on organic breakfast and lunch offerings for the rising number of diners who are seeking cleaner ingredients when eating out. Born in Genoa, Italy, Migliorini spent his early career as an officer on a cruise ship, but when he tired of that life, visited a friend in New York City who got him started in the restaurant business. He believes one secret to his success is that he has worked in virtually every position in the business. Migliorini understands the needs of, and can relate to, his employees and knows the support they need in order to elicit their best efforts. Giving back also is important to him, and over the years, he has helped many nonprofit fundraisers. He likes to spend precious free time with his son, Lorenzo, who is a senior in high school, and playing tennis or working on future business projects. Men on the SCENE 2016

Dr. Matt Perry Combining a lifetime interest in nature and science with a desire to help others made a career in medicine a natural choice for urologist Dr. Matt Perry of Florida Urology Specialists. Dr. Perry’s interest in urology grew because it was the first specialty to use robotic surgery for minimally invasive procedures. That interest spurred him to complete his urology training at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, where he also served as Clinical Instructor for one year. Dr. Perry also works to deliver the Clinic’s model of state-of-the-art medicine with a strong culture of compassionate caregiving in service of patients, with whom he likes to develop collaborative and personal relationships, involving them in decisions about their own care. Dr. Perry’s practice encompasses general urology with a focus on delivering excellent outcomes for patients with prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, kidney stones, prostate enlargement, erectile dysfunction, and female incontinence. While he has extensive expertise in robotic surgery and minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Perry’s philosophy is to consider a broad range of treatment options to find which is best for an individual patient. He appreciates the high caliber of care and collaborative spirit within his group practice and the local urologic community; this collegiality spurs him to deliver the highest level of care he can. That care has earned Dr. Perry recognition as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for the past three years, and he credits his support staff for their contributions and dedication. Originally from Miami, Dr. Perry enjoys Sarasota’s smaller town atmosphere and its natural bounty. With his interest in nature conservation, he and his wife participate actively with Mote Marine. He also enjoys water sports, fishing, kayaking, and paddle boarding in local waters and, along with a friend, is building a Downeaster-style lobster boat. Dr. Perry also loves experimenting in his garden, growing vegetables, fruit trees and herbs, and wants his young daughter to grow up with “dirt beneath her fingernails.” Men on the SCENE 2016

Now, friends and family have also relocated here. His best reward is seeing them – and his customers – happy. Men on the SCENE 2016
Philip Tavill Seeing the impact his father’s work as a physician in public health had on people’s lives sparked Philip Tavill’s desire to help others prevail over their life circumstances. That ambition led Tavill to complete dual masters degrees at Case Western University in social work and nonprofit management. He began his career in vocational rehabilitation where he developed a particular interest in aiding people living in poverty with a focus on very young children. When an opportunity came to work with Children First in Sarasota, he didn’t hesitate and, as its President and CEO, celebrated his 20th anniversary this year. Children First’s mission is to serve children from pregnancy through age five, helping them to be kindergarten-ready and providing a basis for success in life, while assisting their families, who live below the poverty level, achieve goals that move them toward self sufficiency. Tavill’s leadership has created a mission-focused organization where everyone’s purpose is to support the educators and family advocates who work directly with the children and families. That dedication has helped Children First earn its fourth consecutive designation as a Program of Excellence from the National Head Start Association, a rare honor currently given to only eight of more than 1,800 Head Start programs nationally. Tavill also oversees Children First’s Raise Your Hand fundraising campaign, which is well on its way to achieving a $3.8 million goal to support additional programming, increase individual attention in the classroom, and take children off the waiting list. Coming to work for Head Start was a homecoming for Tavill, who first moved here in 1979 and finished high school locally. His three grown children were raised here, and Tavill values the time he spends with them. Relaxation also means spending time in nature, doing a little glass-blowing, and helping support the beleaguered honey bees by enjoying the sweet rewards of tending a couple of hives.
