EDITOR’S PICK: THE TREATMENT:

ENVIRON MOISTURE BOOST COOL PEEL What skin type is it suitable for? Any and all, especially undernourished and dehydrated skin. What’s it good for? Revitalising tired or dull skin – between seasons or when you’re stressed. Why try it in winter? Environ founder and scientific director, Dr Des Fernandes, is the best in the ageing gracefully business. His Environ Skin Care Institute at the Renaissance Body Science Institute in Cape Town is full-to-bursting with cutting-edge treatments for all manner of skincare conditions and concerns. For those looking for something a little gentler this winter, the Environ Moisture Boost Cool Peel can’t be bettered. It’s delivered by expertly trained hands who’ve been in the field for decades and engage you in fascinating skin-chat. First, your skincare professional will assess your individual skincare needs, as well as how you want to feel post-peel. Following a double cleanse, your skin will be gently steamed while extractions are sensitively performed. A 10% lactic acid gel is then passed over the skin to gently remove dead skin cells and stimulate the skin to function optimally. The fully customisable peel comes as one of the brand’s most beloved treatments. It’s brilliant for upping luminosity, tightening pores, firming the skin and smoothing fine lines without any of the irritation. Any tingles are hardly noticeable thanks to a most relaxing head massage while the peel works. Next comes the most indulgent phase of the treatment – the thick, cold algae Alginate Masque, which is smoothed all over your face (including your eyes and lips, depending on how claustrophobic you get). It’s accompanied by a gloriously nourishing hand or foot massage … we dare you not to drift off to sleep! A final application of super-hydrating serums and high-factor SPF leaves skin plumped-up and ready to face the world. You’ll slink out 90 minutes later – skin beaming and baby-soft, not the faintest bit red and looking like you’ve slept for a week. We were still receiving compliments days later. Our top tip: Take home a bag of products from Environ’s Focus Care Moisture+ range to optimise results and keep skin glowing with health for weeks. Book: Environ Skin Care Institute in Cape Town, or visit www.environskincare.com/za/environ-facials/ to find your nearest Environ-affiliated salon or spa.

THE TREATMENT:

SOTHYS HYDRA HYALURONIC ACID 4 What skin type is it suitable for? Anyone with sensitive skin. What’s it good for? Pre- or post-travel.

Why try it in winter? If the long, cold winter is showing in a lacklustre complexion when you look in the mirror, use it as an excuse to treat yourself to the brand-new, 90-minute Sothys Hydra Hyaluronic Acid4 facial. This relaxing but results-giving facial uses Sothys’ reinvented Hydra line powered by four types of hyaluronic acid. It starts with a double cleanse (we adore the deliciously scented Vitality Cleansing Milk and Cleansing Lotion with grapefruit extracts) to ensure that all makeup and residue is removed. Following this, an energising facial massage gets the blood flowing and drains the under eyes of any fluid to noticeably lift the face. During the mask, expect a neck, shoulder and scalp massage as you float away into French skincare heaven. The final few steps in the process are focused on a series of hydrating products so that your skin is left looking luminous and dewy. You should leave with healthy, fully functional skin. Book: SoloTu Hair, Body & Aesthetics in Joburg or Claremont Endermologie in Cape Town.

THE TREATMENT:

EXUVIANCE TOTAL CORRECT ANTI-AGEING What skin type is it suitable for? There’s nothing that will drive skin wild, but do check in with Sorbet if you have existing concerns about specific ingredients. What’s it good for? A refreshed complexion – particularly those with ageing concerns.

Why try it in winter? For a botanical brand, Exuviance’s 60-minute Total Correct Anti-Ageing facial delivers some punchy results. There’s a lovely double cleanse using the Gentle Cleansing Crème and Purifying Cleansing Gel. Then comes the addictive Glycolic Polish, which uses a concoction of 10% glycolic acid and 2% lactobionic acid. The aim is to refine texture and transform an uneven skin tone, whilst easing wrinkles by plumping the skin. This facial also includes a recontouring facial massage, a 30% glycolic acid Revitalizing-Plus Peel that’s left for five to 10 minutes and an anti-ageing serum to wake up sleepy cells – all topped off with the radiance-enhancing Deep Hydration Mask. Although the peel isn’t a relaxing sensation, it’s definitely bearable. A course of treatments is recommended, but even one brings instant tightness and a gleaming complexion. There’s a 30-minute version if you need to be in and out. Book: Visit www.sorbet.co.za/store-locator to find your nearest Sorbet Salon. Our top tips for rehabbing everything from static frizz to split ends Winter and your hair aren’t friends. In fact, they could be enemies. To help you get all geared up for the impending cold, we’ve compiled our crucial tips and products for flawless winter hair. Who knew your hair could look this good all winter long?

TREAT KNOTS WITH PATIENCE The (oftentimes) dreaded detangling phase of hair-wash day doesn’t need to turn into a wrestling match. Investing in proper tools like the Tangle Teezer Easy Dry & Go Vented Hairbrush is your first step in stopping hair from snapping. This brush gets the job done on both damp and dry hair, unravelling knots and tangles. Ideal for pairing with a blow-dryer, this is our go-to for smoothing out texture for a super-defined wash-and-go. You can also use it in the shower to help distribute shampoos, conditioners and treatments evenly through your strands. R430 from ARC Store, Dis-Chem, www.haircair.co.za, www.retailbox.co.za and www.takealot.com

USE HEAT WITH CAUTION This comes back to the golden rule – prevention is always better than cure. Having sizzled hair isn’t doing you any favours, so a heat barrier mist is essential. Not only is the GHD Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray virtually weightless (so your hair will never feel greasy), but it also adds polish to blowouts and protects against hair static. Those with thick and coarse hair will benefit the most from this cult classic. If you use heated styling tools on a daily basis, it’s a necessity. We spray it all over damp hair before blow-drying, or all over dry hair for second-day touch-ups. R360 from www.ghdhair.com and select salons

COMMIT TO WEEKLY MASKS A big old hug in a pot. Hair masks deserve their own special spot in your beauty drawer. After all, even the healthiest of locks need a little extra TLC sometimes. Choose a day where you’ll apply the budget-friendly, damage-erasing L’Oréal Paris Elvive Hydra Hyaluronic Hair Mask and make it become routine. The treatment is infused with moisturising hyaluronic acid to return your hair to its former glory – strong and silky-soft strands. After two to three minutes (preferably with a plastic shower cap on in the bath or shower), hair feels more nourished yet lightweight. R115 from Clicks, Dis-Chem, Foschini and www.takealot.com

GO EASY ON SHAMPOO We hate to break it to you, but your hair dries out a lot faster in the winter, making it brittle and prone to static. Great. If you’re washing your hair every day, you’re also not giving your scalp a chance to produce natural sebum (which moisturises your scalp and hair). Stop daily washing and scale back on the amount of shampoo. We recommend gentle lathering with the Kevin Murphy Repair Me Wash and Rinse – a strengthening, sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner chock-full of silk amino proteins – that clean and rebuild fragile hair. After only a couple of uses, they deliver glossy, bouncy and hydrated hair. If you frequent a professional stylist for colour jobs, the irresistibly modern Kevin Murphy Everlasting Colour Wash and Rinse are the besties you never knew you needed. This shampoo and conditioner is formulated to work as armour to fight any excessive colouring threats. Plus, the waft of vanilla, bergamot and rose is a complete sensorial experience. Finish with a cold rinse to close down the cuticle, give a natural shine and preserve that straight-fromthe-salon look for as long as possible. FIGHT THE FADE Tired of brassy undertones that are mellowing your blonde fierceness? Say less. To prolong your colour between trips to the salon, while also keeping your hair soft and silky, reach for the Inoar Absolut Speed Blond Leave-In Mist infused with purple pigments. Whether you’re platinum or honey blonde, this miracle worker will make your hair shine like never before by colour-correcting and strengthening hair fibres. As a bonus, it provides a barrier between hot tools and your hair for guilt-free styling. Treat your hair once a week in the winter months. R460 from www.inoar.co.za and select salons

TIE IT UP To avoid frizzy hair, keep your hair tied up as much as possible. Want to try a spiral hair tie to tie your hair back without damage, but can’t give up your love of scrunchies? For a stylish finish, accessorise with the Invisibobble Sprunchie. This cute pick looks like your average scrunchie, but under that soft velvet is a spiral hair tie, so you won’t have a harsh dent in your already-weakened hair – or a crazy headache – after a few hours of wear. It’s perfect for days in the office or pairing with your pyjamas. You won’t go back to normal ponytail holders ever again. R185 from www.haircair.co.za and www.retailbox.co.za

BE RELIGIOUS ABOUT OILS In the quest for healthy hair – particularly through cooler temperatures – only the best hair oil will do. Moroccanoil’s formula is known to expertly replenish dry hair time and time again. IYKYK. The iconic product has a fresh, new look for a limited time only – joining forces with acclaimed artist Asia Pietrzyk, Moroccanoil has created vibrant artwork for the gorgeous Moroccanoil Treatment Special Edition Original. INVEST IN AN OVERNIGHT HAIR TREATMENT Hydrating your hair in the depths of winter can be a challenge. For resilient and healthy locks, pamper your hair every now and then to give it a boost. The Kérastase Nutritive 8H Magic Night Serum is as low-maintenance as you could ask for – and it’s a gift from heaven for those with breakage. This splurge-worthy nighttime treatment does the heavy lifting while you sleep without transferring onto your skin or pillowcase. Very little effort is required on your end – apply a pump just before bed, pile your hair into a loose topknot and style or wash out in the morning. LESS IS MORE Although it can be tempting, don’t product-load your hair. Achieve the perfect balance with the LUSH Super Milk Conditioning Spray – a light, milky spray that’s like a lightweight moisturiser for your hair. Packed with almond, coconut and oat milks, it eases knots, supports elasticity, restores softness and adds back moisture. It’s even powerful even to offer heat protection and cut blow-drying time for a faster morning routine. But the best part is the intoxicating scent that isn’t overpowering – think a combination of zesty and warm, with notes of citrus and caramel. RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT An eating and drinking day trip from Cape Town at The Vine Bistro There’s a reason Stellenbosch is one of the most visited wine regions in the world. It’s only an hour away from Cape Town, making it the perfect day trip or weekend away. But tasting your way around the Stellenbosch Wine Route is hard work – and there will come a time in your day when you need to fill your belly with something more substantial than wine tastings. When that time comes, kindly ask your DD to point the car in the direction of The Vine Bistro at Glenelly Estate. French bistro classics, hot winter wines and a breath of fresh air? Yes, please.

WHERE TO EAT THE VINE BISTRO Could this be the most delightful French restaurant in Cape Town? Packed to the rafters with charm, atmosphere and elegantly dressed waiters, The Vine Bistro on Glenelly Estate is deserving of its glittering reputation. And, almost as a bonus, the food is also delicious. The à la carte menu doesn’t radicalise French cuisine, but rather faithfully recreates Gallic fare – from duck and pistachio terrine to, yes, veal sweetbreads with mushroom duxelles and gnocchi Parisienne. The classic French onion soup is their most popular dish – a frankly sinfully tasty starter that will undoubtedly overshadow everything else you’ve ever eaten. The aromatic broth is made with caramelised, buttery onions and topped with meltedcheese topped crusty baguette. Truly a bowl of comfort. The wine list is, naturally, impressive. Order a bottle of Glenelly Lady May – a Cape Bordeaux red blend with aromas of blackcurrant and plums – and savour the main event. The signature main course this winter is tender salted pork with lentils and Dijon mustard sauce. Rich, umami and a little smoky. An absolute triumph of taste and texture. But no trip 34 | w w w .s c en ein t h ec it y.c o .za | Winter 2 0 2 3

to The Vine Bistro would be complete without sampling their bouillabaisse du cap, essentially fancy fish stew or soup. A medley of the freshest possible fish, shellfish and vegetables, it’s a glorious dish – its magic lying in its scent and intensity of flavour. It’s served with a spicy sauce rouille for a memorable meal. There’s also a patriotic lineup of French desserts, including rum baba with Chantilly cream and fresh fruit as well as heavenly apple tarte tartin – draped with flaky pastry and served upside-down to expose the gleaming melt-in-your-mouth apples. The classic opera cake is a six-layer masterpiece, featuring almond sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup, an espresso buttercream and dark chocolate ganache. All of this is washed down with a stunning wine collection that draws from some of France’s finest growers. Glenelly Estate, Lelie Street, Stellenbosch 021 809 6444 www.glenellyestate.com

ETHOS RESTAURANT For generations, the shores of the Mediterranean have been deeply alluring: Embedded in its story is not only the warmth of its spirit, but the romance of its tales and its people - the feeling of timelessness brought on by its ancient and iconic landscapes. Synonymous with the depths of culture, beautiful in its historic and natural makeup, it will forever be compelling for the fables it shares: The Mediterranean will always fascinate us for what it reveals most – that humanity is more than just breathing…it’s alive! This is the inspiration of Ethos – a stellar restaurant based in the heart of Rosebank, Johannesburg, which boasts a philosophy of Mediterranean cuisine. Food has always been more to the Mediterranean people than just sustenance. Rather, it is the spirit of what defines their romance and is the vehicle through which they express their love for the world around them.

Marble Group is once again pushing the boundaries of luxury, and everyone’s invited. Get ready to dress up, show up and break free this Summer as Zioux {pronounced Zoo} which has officially opened its stained-glass, over-the-top doors. “The world has changed, but people still love to go out and have fun,” explains Gary Kyriacou, founder of The Marble Group. “We see people are looking to escape when they’re out – Zioux is the place for them to let go.”

area and outside seating with intricate detailing. Playful prints, bespoke artwork designs and textures brings the space to life. It also features one of the best VOID sound systems in the country – with enough tech and volume to satisfy the fussiest DJ, and under the guidance of Operations Director, Dino Constantinou. George Hunter, the consulting head barman for Marble and Saint, has joined the group full-time to curate the cocktail experience

Located next door to Saint in the MARC Sandton, described as a playground for the adventurous, Zioux is creating a buzz in the heart of Sandton – with the high-energy and playful Saint on one side, and Africa’s largest stock exchange on the other.

The food is not a traditional sit-down offering either. Instead, a classic retro-revival of nostalgic menu items and small, decadent plates. On certain days of the week, Zioux will also feature extravagant brunches and high teas.

The 400m2 space is a merger of a bar and a restaurant on an international level – a luxurious lounge where guests can indulge in Champagne, cocktails and a menu featuring an extravagant selection of dishes designed to be shared. Each corner and surface have been carefully thought through and pays homage to the 70’s era. The space is intimate and seductive.

“We cater for a diverse but specific crowd,” explains David Higgs, co-founder of The Marble Group and the artistic mind behind the globally-inspired menu. “Food has always brought people together, and we’re going back to that, it’s just going to be really opulent and playful.”

“Zioux brings warm authenticity but also decadent detail to life,” explains Interior Designer, Irene Kyriacou. “Everything in the space is custommade and intricate to create an air of comfort and timelessness in the inside-outside space.” Marble Group has once again partnered with GRID to design the look and feel for Zioux. The centerpiece to Zioux is the onyx marble back-lit bar. It is flanked by booth seating, a raised VIP

“The world has changed, and we’ve entered a new generation of luxury,” Gary explains. “Customers are no longer seeking stiff and uptight environments to feel a sense of luxury. Zioux is a space that boldly brings together luxury through experience, quality and intuitive service. It’s sure to bring out the wild side in everyone.”

UPPER UNION RESTAURANT Best for: Truly flavour-packed small plates complete with creative cocktails Ultra-modern, technically excellent sharing plates are the lure at this swanky new restaurant next door to Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel. One step into its space, one drink from its cellar and one bite of its menu, we were hooked on MORE Family Collection and chef Amori Burger’s latest project. Upper Union Restaurant is the perfect example of a restaurant that lets the ingredients speak for themselves – from the blackened beetroot and green falafel right down to the yellowtail crudo and hearty rib-eye steak. The beautiful interior here is a definite plus to boot. If you’re yet to see the reimagined heritage building with Victorian-inspired stainedglass windows in person, you’ve likely seen it on Instagram. A jazzy soundtrack hums gently over a palette of emerald green, black and white with textures of oak, marble, slate and brass. During the day, the restaurant is bathed in natural light, while at night the mood shifts to sultry. We like Upper

Union Restaurant even more for dreaming up the best outdoor dining spot imaginable. No matter the choice off the menu, every morsel is treated with an expert hand. Highlights include the fig and red onion bhaji fried to crispy perfection, served alongside tamarind chutney and raita; the creamy burrata cheese and prosciutto that’s ideal for dipping the seeded flatbread into; and the most tender, fall-apart lamb made with baharat sauce, rose and curry leaf. Dishes get even tastier as you move down the menu. Dig into the Southern-fried chicken piled up with a garnish of mango, or the vodka tempura kingklip that’s given a cleverly light and fresh touch with green apple. Be sure to order one of the cocktails here, too – either to start while getting stuck into the bread, or to end. The espresso martini with Absolut Vanilia Vodka hits the sweet spot. 3 Upper Union Street, Gardens 021 891 0360 www.upperunion.co.za W i nt e r 2023 | www. sc e n e i n th e c i ty . c o . z a | 43

PROTÉGÉ Best for: Meticulously presented high-end food served in a cosy atmosphere A winter lunch special for R595 per person? Yes please – and not a starched tablecloth in sight. Instead, the upscale-casual Protégé is all about precision-tuned contemporary flavours, serving a cutting-edge lineup of four courses. Quite simply, it’s one of the best-value tasting menus in town. Cosy up amid the grey marble, light woods and pale green accents with a bottle from the Franschhoek-inspired wine list. The crackling fireplace adds a touch of cosiness during a cold winter’s day. This is quiet finesse in a genuinely buzzy space, and wherever you sit, you’ll feel like part of the action. Singles can comfortably find a spot at the counter and enjoy a meal on their own. The modernity of the atmosphere is reflected in the new winter menu – head chef Zane Soutar’s takes on flavour are mirrored in dishes such as the delicately crisp spiced squid garnished with herbs and edible flowers, or the crowd-pleasing lamb chops served with smoked tomatoes and salsa verde. We started with the beef tataki hors d’oeuvre and garlicky marinated olives before taste-testing our way through the bread course. Tear off pieces of thick, rustic toasted sourdough before spreading some butter with wild garlic oil and adding paper-thin sliced biltong on top. The simplest yet most delicious way to start that gets better with each bite. On our visit, we were particularly blown away by the immaculately crafted seared tuna with miso-glazed aubergine and ssamjang as well as the Purdon Wagyu sirloin with porcini mushroom sauce and smoked pomme purée. It’s prepared in just the right way to bring out its inherent flavour. And don’t ignore the side-menu items such as the spiced edamame and Asian-style oysters. For those into baked camembert, Protégé’s garlic truffle version is the platonic ideal. Le Quartier Français, 18 Huguenot Street, Franschhoek 021 492 4048 www.protegerestaurant.co.za

DUSK RESTAURANT Best for: The most theatrical supper in Stellenbosch Local ingredients are in the spotlight at this new Stellenbosch address for special occasions and celebratory splurges. The intimate 30-seater, led by chefs Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin, is a small but perfectly formed place that’s not to be missed. Specialising in fine dining, the moodily-lit Dusk Restaurant – decked with white tablecloths and gleaming glassware – struts its stuff for well-heeled diners with inquisitive palates. The kitchen produces modern cooking in the haute-cuisine league across its 11-course tasting menu (R1,690 per person) and six-course winter special menu (R895 per person). Intriguing flavour combos such as “snails and their roe” just beg to be tried, while desserts lean more experimental, much to the delight of anyone dining here. When you consider who’s behind all this, it’s no surprise. Chef Darren is a genius when it comes to making ingredients sing and creating harmonious marriages. Dusk Restaurant embraces the theatre of fine dining – buckle up for an umami-heavy “little corn bite” with a sprinkle of popcorn dust and Purdon Wagyu tartare served with pomegranate relish and an “Egg McMuffin”. The thrills continue with a “wash your mouth out with soap” palate cleanser; smoked and dry-aged duck breast that’s given a sophisticated spin with seasonal leaves and truffle; and butternut gâteaux that belies its humble origins with lacto-fermented plum and mascarpone. Moreover, the bitter coffee and dark chocolate crème with roasted chestnut crémeux, hazelnut shortbread and vanilla ice cream is unusually nuanced. Staff are some of the most professional in the business, with a sommelier on hand to suggest champagne aperitifs and advise which wine pairing to choose. Be warned – you’ll have to book well in advance. 43 Plein Street, Stellenbosch 021 023 4100 www.duskrestaurant.co.za

FOXCROFT Best for: Consistent cooking paired with a dark and moody dining room Sharp lines, acute shadows and modernist fixtures set the aesthetic tone for Foxcroft. The space is industrial-chic, showcasing exposed ceilings, concrete flooring and black wall paint to create a moody vibe. The honey glow of the central fireplace will invite you in as you take refuge from a rainy evening. While simple in the atmosphere, the food certainly feels extravagant in flavour. All eyes are on the exquisitely prepared eight-course tasting menu (R895 per person for lunch or R995 for dinner) whipped up by head chef Glen ‘Foxcroft’ Williams. All the plates pack a splendid punch. Standout dishes include chunks of market fish in a spicy pool of consommé with green herbs, marinated tomatoes, capers and crème fraîche; an extravaganza of aged beef tartare with kosher pickles, green peppercorns, beef fat and thyme; dry red curry of pork whose silkiness contrasts perfectly with the earthiness of cauliflower, kohlrabi

and ginger; and luscious Valrhona Chocolate Tanariva 33% crémeux with pickled cherries, pistachio and cherry stracciatella ice cream. In sync with chef Glen’s holistic spirit, everything on your arty ceramic plate is uber-fresh. The confit duck is tender, practically melting in the mouth. It’s uniquely accented with beetroot, fermented plums, black garlic and cabbage. For the cheese course – goat cheesecake – goat cheese adds a tangy, salty touch and a wonderfully complex flavour, while guava, lemon and thyme add a freshness that offsets the richness. Portions, including the opening ‘Foxcroft bread’, are extremely generous. After dinner, linger over petit fours while enjoying your espresso. Foxcroft gets full points from us for the creative attention with which their tasty plates are pulled together. Plus, the wine matching makes it worth a special trip. WHERE TO STAY STEENBERG HOTEL & SPA This extraordinary hotel is a feast for the eyes, tummy and soul. Situated on the oldest original wine farm in Constantia, Steenberg Hotel & Spa will have you seriously thinking about a permanent escape from the concrete jungle. Sweeping down the lavender-lined driveway, surrounded by the vineyards of its own picturesque winery, you know you’ve arrived somewhere truly magical as soon as you step foot on Steenberg Farm. If you’re looking to unwind and unplug, it doesn’t get any better than this intensely private 24-key oasis. Naturally, a glass of Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay Brut MCC welcomes you on entry. The hotel features rows of bookshelves lined up with the classics and ceilings adorned with glistening chandeliers, but it’s the farm’s outdoor areas that are truly impressive. Take in the sweeping natural landscape and let the beauty transport you into that country pace. The rooms are all lovely. Spacious, with a living area, separate bathroom and private outdoor space. If you’re a couple, a Premier Room or One-Bedroom Suite is plenty of space – if you’re a family, opt for the artfully composed Two-Bedroom or Three-Bedroom Villa, which are bigger and have a kitchen, private garden and heated pool. You’ll share the property with Maximillian, Steenberg Farm’s resident peacock. Our Manor House One-Bedroom Suite was elegantly but sparingly kitted out, blending charcoal grey with blush pink and warm, earthy accents. The king-size bed couldn’t have been more comfortable, while the sumptuous bathroom made a dip in the tub an unmissable activity. Intimate nooks for reading, a well-stocked minibar as well as a top-notch espresso machine made our room a lovely place to have our first – or last – drink of the day. There’s plenty to keep you occupied here, whether it’s flopping by the pool, enjoying a self-guided farm walk, revelling in the blooms and flora or learning about the wine-making processes. The hotel also offers close proximity to the area’s many wineries and eateries. Breakfast at Tryn – charmingly tucked underneath towering, decades-old oak trees with spectacular vineyard views – is included with your stay, so fill up before setting out on an adventure. We were impressed by virtually everything that executive chef Kerry Kilpin cooked up, even and especially the breakfast dishes. The salmon omelette – a magic dish of fluffy eggs topped with smoked salmon trout, capers, rocket and lemon – can’t be missed; nor can the French toast layered with grilled bacon, camembert and syrup. Wine, dine, unwind. You’ll leave Steenberg Hotel & Spa feel refreshed, invigorated – and craving more. WHERE TO EAT BISTRO SIXTEEN82 Out for a hot date? Or just after a cosy spot for two? Saunter through the grapevines for a bite to eat at the acclaimed Bistro Sixteen82. Its modern interior and the buzz of chatter conjures an intimate backdrop for any occasion. Here, finding the best tapas is easy peasy, fresh lemon (drizzled over prawns) squeezy. Executive chef Kerry Kilpin’s evening tapas menu is served every Monday to Sunday from 17h00 to 20h30. Kick off with the bruschetta duo and crispy baked cheese with a glass of Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc while you take in the rest of the offerings. Next, it’s always worth ordering the crisp-fried patatas bravas doused with a mouthwatering chilli and crème fraîche sauce. The main attraction is the seafood: The fresh oysters, Spanish garlic prawns, wasabi fried calamari and Thai-style mussels with lemongrass are must-haves. For great meat, the beef sirloin – served with broccolini, pak choi, kimchi and a spicy pineapple vinaigrette – is the plate you’ll be asking the waiters for seconds and even thirds of. The vegetarian tapas dishes, such as parsnip and roasted onion arancini or a warm broccoli and spinach salad, are also held in high regard and continuously reinvented. If the main dining area looks too packed, peer beyond the bar – there’s a back room that often has more space. Steenberg Farm, Steenberg Road, Tokai 021 205 3866 www.steenbergfarm.com

SIP, STROLL AND SINK INTO VELVET SOFAS AT LEEU HOUSE FRANSCHHOEK Heading to Wine Country for the weekend? While the majestic natural beauty of the Cape Winelands and the delights of Franschhoek are well known, there’s one spot along the main road that’s managed to escape the crowds. This Cape Dutch-style gabled mansion has been respectfully restored and reimagined as a modern-day boutique hotel by founder Analjit Singh and interior designer Beverley Boswell. Leeu House’s 12 rooms – each tastefully decorated with plenty of cream, sand and grey – are airy, open, uncluttered and tremendously soothing. They include wood accents, pristine white linens as well as natural materials like sisal and jute. Although on first sight it appears minimalist, there’s more detail than meets the eye – including original pieces of furniture or artwork, a complimentary wine and fruit platter, a Nespresso machine, a flat-screen TV, slippers and bathrobes, wardrobes that glow with soft light when opened and convenient extras. Request a room with terrace access if you want (trust us, you do). If you’re looking to socialise, the radiant fireplace lounge makes a beautiful hangout spot, as does the furnished pool area resplendent with tall cypress trees. Breakfast is served daily in the glass-walled The Conservatory with its checkerboard floors and lilac-coloured glasses.

TAKE PART IN ONE OF LIFE’S GREAT ADVENTURES AT

LONG LEE MANOR AT SHAMWARI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

PATERSON You might be surprised to come across a stately, striking Edwardian manor in this corner of the Eastern Cape. But despite the grand exterior and botanically perfect landscaping, Long Lee Manor is the absolute antithesis of a fussy hideaway – it’s an elegantly modern manor house. The renovation of Shamwari Private Game Reserve’s 15-room lodge didn’t skimp on a thing. Inside, rooms have been reimagined in clean, contemporary style. Earthy tones (beige sofas, sage-green headboards), warming woods, mid-century touches and impossibly heavy drapery abound, emanating an Edwardian country house hotel with a tremendous sense of panache. Still, you’ll be hard-pressed to have the motivation to leave the infinity pool overlooking the acacia-studded plains. Top-tier rooms, like the suites, come with balconies and panoramic sunset views. They’re filled with natural light then softened in the evening with a dim amber glow. Days are full, with reliable sightings of the Big Five (and the rather elusive cheetah) and fireside tea, coffee and cake. However, this is much more than an immersive safari. It’s a backstage pass to participate in Shamwari’s hands-on conservation. Complimentary activities include visiting the wildlife rehabilitation centre and observing game captures – a must-do. 68 | w w w .s c en ein t h ec it y.c o .za | Winter 2 0 2 3

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK: The absurdly tasty menu at the restaurant is focused around seasonal, sustainable produce – salmon tartare and spinach and feta börek, followed by chocolate marquise with clouds of torched meringue. Lunch is a series of tapas so guests can eat as little or as much as they want. There are make-yourown salads, freshly baked baguette, beetroot arancini, barbecued broccoli with satay sauce, classic fish cakes, lemon and herb chicken with toasted cashews, juniper-crusted venison fillet and coffee ice cream. In winter, sitting outside with a glass of red wine is a joy. It’s worth saving space for high tea, too! EMBRACE OUTRAGEOUS SNUGNESS ATOP THE BEACH AT THE BUNGALOW PLETTENBERG BAY If you’re staying at The Bungalow, you can pretty much guarantee you’ll spend a lot of time horizontal. This under-the-radar hideaway in Plettenberg Bay is completely relaxed and blissfully quiet. As the name suggests, all of the accommodation here is bungalows, so there’s plenty of room for you and yours to stretch out and unwind. The veritable surf and sand playground surrounded by milkwood trees sits right on Hobie Beach, with every room looking out to the shell-strewn beach with that blue sea always visible. Guests are young and mainly stay bundled up in the bright bedrooms. And it’s not hard to see why – they’re adorned with the vivid blend of blue and green, splashy fauna and flora patterns, wicker and rattan furnishings as well as zigzag rugs. The Cove comes with a private veranda, doors that slide wide open and a shower with probably the most sensational views. In the morning, the restaurant and bar – which boasts a fantastic terrace and sea views – makes for a light-flooded breakfast room. This is also a great place for quality sushi and seafood, cocktails of impossible colours and gastronomic guilty pleasures in cheerful and friendly surroundings. At night, the place looks dreamy; that indescribable light at sunset and the palm trees twinkling with string lights.
