6 serums to up your skincare game
There might be a trend towards a simplified skincare routine, but not even the most impressive of results will have us parting ways with our face serums. Everything from salicylic acid to vitamin A derivatives like retinol can take your routine from basic to expert with just one extra step. With so many options available, it’s easy to become overwhelmed – however, it’s important to focus on what you’re actually trying to treat. The good news? We’ve tested serums for every skin type and concern. Whatever your skin drama, we’ve got a serum-based solution.
WHAT IS A FACE SERUM?
Put simply, face serums are ‘medicine’ for your skin. Designed to penetrate deeply into the skin, they’re lightweight but packed with powerful ingredients that hydrate, brighten and rejuvenate. Serums can also target specific concerns like hyperpigmentation and acne, improving overall radiance and skin texture. A little goes a long way: A serum’s concentrated formula can make the skin look and feel better with just a small amount. It’s usually applied before moisturiser that also acts as a shield to lock in the serum’s potent ingredients. You’ll find certain serums, such as retinol, work best whilst you’re sleeping, and others, including vitamin C, are ideally applied first thing in the morning. Daytime skincare focuses on protection from inflammation and oxidation with anti-pollution, UV protection and hyaluronic acid. At night, active ingredients like peptides and niacinamide are key to supporting the skin’s natural repair while you catch some Z’s. After applying your serum, layer on your moisturiser and then facial sunscreen year-round. In the evening, finish with a cracking good night cream. If you’re treating yourself to an at-home facial with exfoliating masks or similar treatments, follow up with a hydrating or soothing serum to calm the skin.
INGREDIENTS TO LOOK FOR IN FACE SERUMS
• Vitamin C: An antioxidant that helps to neutralise the negative impact of free oxygen radicals on skin cells.
• Hyaluronic acid: A humectant that attracts and retains moisture, improving skin plumpness and minimising fine lines.
• Niacinamide: Calms irritation, addresses uneven skin tone and is a vital part of the B vitamin complex.
• Retinol: Regulates skin cell turnover to reduce blocked pores and acne while boosting collagen production to smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
• Peptides: The building blocks of proteins that signal skin to produce structural proteins like collagen and elastin, enhancing firmness and rigidity.
• Squalane: Similar to the skin’s natural sebum, it’s a well-tolerated emollient and moisturiser that keeps skin smooth, soft and hydrated.
• AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids): Gentle exfoliants like lactic and glycolic acid that help shed dead skin cells to reveal brighter, healthier skin.
• BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids): Oil-soluble exfoliants like salicylic acid that penetrate pores to effectively treat acne-prone skin.
• Growth factors: Stimulate cellular activity and tissue repair using ingredients such as EGF (epidermal growth factor), FGF (fibroblast growth factor) and TGF-beta (transforming growth factor-beta) to combat signs of ageing.
EDITOR’S PICK:
BEST FOR TACKLING SIGNS OF AGEING
Who it’s for: Mature skin, various retinol tolerances
Benefits: Firms, reduces blemishes, evens out texture, smooths fine lines and wrinkles
Why we love it: Of all the face serums available to us, retinol is perhaps the most transformative. One of the main forms of vitamin A, retinol – a type of retinoid – works by normalising the function of skin cells. This action has a host of aesthetic benefits. From a skincare perspective, retinoids act at a deep cellular level, promoting collagen and elastin production, reducing cellular ageing and pore congestion, and helping to regulate sebum production. The cellular regeneration triggered by retinol can lead to broad benefits for various skin types and concerns. Many have found it effective in reducing roughness, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles linked to photoageing (or sun damage). Retinol also shows potential in treating acne-prone skin, with studies indicating that the retinoid family can help reduce active breakouts and prevent new ones from forming. It may also significantly improve skin texture, including scarring and pigmentation. Vitamin A cannot be produced by the body, so it must be obtained through our diet and applied topically to our skin via skincare products.
Environ’s new retinol serums are perhaps the brand’s most accomplished products yet. Founder Dr Des Fernandes carried out extensive research into the retinol “sweet spot” (impressive results meets minimal irritation). Containing pure retinol, these modern formulas make an effort to protect skin rather than strip it. Beginners should start with the Environ Tri-Retinoid Complex Retinol Serum . It’s designed specifically with beginners in mind and contains a balanced concentration of retinol, which gradually works its magic on your skin while you sleep. Toss in two additional retinoid derivatives, along with powerful antioxidants and skin-strengthening ingredients, and you’ve got yourself a gold-standard formula. Refined skin without compromising its protective barrier. Win-win. We raved about how much this product improved the look and feel of our skin. After experiencing some light peeling initially, all the formerly dull and rough patches of our face appeared even and smooth. Plus, we noticed a general boost in brightness and radiance. The gel-like consistency makes it easy to spread a pea-sized amount over your face and neck, paying special attention to areas where fine lines form. But, as we always say, start slow – once a week, then twice a week, then build up to every other day.
Work your way up through Environ’s retinol ladder and you’ll find the Environ Tri-Retinoid Complex Retinol Serum Forte . It’s formulated with a pretty high dose of retinoid complex to reduce the four signs of ageing – wrinkles, pore size, texture and tone – once you’ve acclimated. The addition of phyto-retinol boosters Revinage™ and NovoRetin™ ensures your skin barrier is healthy and thriving. It’s a sound investment for all kinds of skin concerns from addressing wrinkles to clearing blemishes. If your expression lines are becoming more prominently etched on your face, this potent formula can help soften them. Whilst it can be used by all ages (collagen starts to decline and deplete around the age of 25), we think that people over 35+ will really see the benefit. Since it’s a treatment, retinol works best when applied to clean skin. Then, in the morning, cleanse your face and complete your routine with sunscreen. While this should be a given whatever you use, it’s especially critical with vitamin-A products, as skin is more sensitive to UV rays when using retinol.

BEST FOR BRIGHTENING
Who it’s for: Dry, normal, combination, sensitive
Benefits: Illuminates, improves the appearance of dark spots, fights against free radical damage Why we love it: You’ve likely noticed vitamin C serums are mainstays in the vanities of skincare enthusiasts – or really, anyone with radiant skin. But why? Like a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice for your complexion, vitamin C has specific benefits for the skin due to its photoprotective, antioxidative, anti-pigmentary and overall anti-ageing effects. It can encourage collagen and elastin production while protecting against collagen damage in the skin’s dermis. Vitamin C is also a staple in brightening products, as it inhibits melanin production – the source of skin discolouration, dark spots and hyperpigmentation. The popular Lamelle Correctives Vita-C Lipid Serum is a winning formulation for brightening the canvas in just a few weeks. It has a wonderful silky texture and a citrus scent. Through 20% stabilised vitamin C and a slew of antioxidants, this elixir protects against free radicals and dramatically lightens dark spots caused by sun damage. Over time, it can help prevent dark spots from forming in the first place. For added cushioning, this serum is also combined with squalane, jojoba oil and ginger root extract to replenish moisture. The result is glowing skin that’s hydrated and blemish-free. R,1050 from Dermastore, Cosmetology and SkinMiles
BEST FOR HYDRATING
Who it’s for: All skin types
Benefits: Hydrates, plumps, refines the skin
Why we love it: The hype surrounding niacinamide – a form of vitamin B3 – isn’t, well, all hype. The skincare industry’s current darling is suitable for pretty much every skin type, and its benefits are easily reaped. This wonder vitamin has brightening, oil-curbing and redness-calming properties – just to name a few. What’s more, it works to fade dark spots, hyperpigmentation and blotchiness by inhibiting the transfer of pigment to the skin’s surface. The new Avène Hyaluron Activ B3 Serum can help quench the skin’s thirst, plumping up fine lines and giving skin a healthy-looking glow in the process. Niacinamide is great on its own, but when you pair it with hyaluronic acid, you’ve got a serious power-couple situation. Niacinamide softens the skin and evens texture, while hyaluronic acid imparts that dewy, well-rested glow – even if you have desert-dry skin. The cherry on top? It’s also infused with Avène Thermal Spring Water, which nourishes with antioxidants. We love that the formula has a weightless water-gel texture that sinks in on the spot, so you won’t be left with any residue. Crucially, it doesn’t pill under foundation either. It’s mild enough to use twice a day for even more noticeable results.
R790 from Dermastore, Care to Beauty, Absolute Skin and Dis-Chem
Why we love it: Acids are a skincare ingredient often used for exfoliation. There are two main groups of acids: Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). AHAs are water-soluble and target the skin’s surface, helping with fine lines, texture and dullness. BHAs, in contrast, penetrate deep into clogged pores, effectively treating and preventing acne. Dull, dry and discoloured complexions can benefit from the Kiehl’s
Clearly Corrective Daily Re-Texturising Triple Acid Peel to gently revive skin when the elements are against it. This pre-serum contains a triple threat of salicylic, glycolic and lactic acids, so you can skip the Paris filter (or not). It smooths texture, clears out acne-causing congestion in pores and reduces that oily shine you used to need powder to cover up. Salicylic acid is a popular choice for minimising breakouts. Glycolic acid, derived from sugar, is one of the most commonly used acids in skincare. Lactic acid, the second smallest molecule, is gentler than glycolic acid and also acts as a hydrating agent by drawing moisture to the skin. Just dispense a few drops onto a cotton pad and then gently swipe it across your face, moving down from your hairline to your décolletage.

BEST FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Who it’s for: Sensitive, dry, normal
Benefits: Deeply comforting, anti-inflammatory, protects against environmental aggressors
Why we love it: Vitamin E is by no means a novelty. Do you remember being little and being fascinated by those golden-coloured vitamin E capsules your mom always kept on the counter? We do, too. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that scavenges free radicals to protect skin against oxidative damage. The prime benefit of vitamin E is the capability to accelerate healing of skin damage, including burns and wounds. It’s also highly moisturising, skin-nourishing and can help calm inflammation. When our skin is acting up, it’s in the Institut Esthederm Intensive Vitamin E² Serum we trust. This gentle serum is one of the speediest saviours you can reach for when irritation strikes – one-stop shop for healing, restoring and protecting dry, sensitive skin. It instantly smooths and soothes thanks to its namesake vitamin E complex, which is clinically proven to lock in moisture for rough, dry skin. Meanwhile, the formula boasts Institut Esthederm’s Cellular Water to both revitalise the skin’s barrier and shield it from external stressors. If reactions are an issue, strengthening the delicate barrier is the goal –because a better barrier means healthier, more resilient skin. This is truly one of our desert island products.

BEST ALL-ROUNDER
Who it’s for: All skin types
Benefits: Soothes, repairs, protects the skin barrier
Why we love it: Vitamin C serums are amazing for fading dark spots, while vitamin A serums are famous for their wrinkle-softening abilities. Meanwhile, peptide serums are perfect for those who are looking to smooth over fine lines. They’ve long been regarded as a non-invasive, topical method to achieve results similar to injectables. Peptides are short chains of amino acids that are naturally occurring in the body, but within peptide serums, can be combined to do the absolute most for your skin. When applied on the skin, they can increase the production of proteins such as collagen, elastin and fibronectin, supporting skin health and addressing common signs of ageing. Finding a hardworking serum when you have sensitive skin is a dangerous game.
But the Biomedical Emporium Forté ? It checks all the boxes. This fragrance-free formula has a light, fast-absorbing texture and utilises peptides as well as hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and ceramides. What sets this product apart, in our opinion, is its ability to make your skin smoother and more elastic, soothe and correct skin discolouration and redness, and improve overall skin health. A versatile choice for post-procedure care and daily use.

Summer city in the
The hottest restaurants in Cape Town to have on your radar
Cape Town never looks better than when it shines in the sun. It’s out with the old, in with the new for summer – as the clouds part and the city hots up, the social set gathers at buzzing new restaurants. For Capetonians, after all, going out to eat is a hobby, a social activity and an adventure. This is where any It girl worth their salt will want to be spotted this summer. Some are quaint neighbourhood haunts, others are exciting new ventures from culinary stalwarts, yet all have one thing in common: They’re well worth the reservation.
VUE SHORTMARKET
Shortmarket Street has welcomed a number of notable new restaurants in the past few years. And now, to tucked-away Heritage Square, comes VUE Shortmarket, which already has the area swooning. There’s a good reason for the fuss: The rooftop restaurant is from Günter Boisits and Aidan Mautschke of The Drinkery (another local hotspot) and delivers exceptional raw dishes. Hype can be a dangerous thing (how can a little oyster possibly live up to all that pressure?), but we can happily say that in VUE Shortmarket’s case, it’s entirely deserved. Up a staircase, the restaurant is immediately transporting, with modernist olive-green walls and banquettes, potted plants, rattan chairs and an illuminated bar. A retractable roof lets sunlight stream in. The perfectly formed menu is all about flawless small plates and a selection of top-shelf meat and seafood dishes. You’ll be tempted to pull out your phone – especially to capture the ‘Parmesan and smoke’ beef tartare that practically melts in your mouth, served alongside brioche toast – but mostly you’ll be too busy eating. If you’re on a seafood kick, start with the linefish crudo. Topped with dots of cucumber gel, a drizzle of chilli oil and a pinch of lime zest, we love every element of this dish. All you need is a glass of bubbly
to complete the experience. Moving on to the mains, the meat speaks for itself – we suggest tucking into the sirloin on the bone. Each bite is a burst of flavour, with roasted lemon crème fraîche, thyme aioli and salsa verde cutting through the richness. Alternatively, the black garlic and squid ink tuna is a luxe twist on blackened tuna paired with chakalaka prawn bisque and charred corn purée. The whole menu is a knockout; just make sure you save room for dessert: Bitter chocolate crémeux with tangy berry crumble, toasted marshmallow ice cream and pinotage gel. Don’t plan to share it.
Combining two red-hot cuisines is no sweat for Nikkei, the Bree Street restaurant putting Japanese-Peruvian food on the map. The younger sibling of Burger & Lobster, Iron Steak and Bar, Hacienda and Scala Pasta Bar, Nikkei has already become a destination for diners with adventurous palates. The vibe? Sleek, modern and sexy. Interiors are distinctive, with dark walls, an earthy-toned colour palette, marbletopped tables, leather booths, low-hanging lights and plenty of bright green tropical foliage. That sense of discernible confidence continues with technically astute snacks like an edible oyster shell served on a bonsai tree. The crowd? This is the kind of place that’s well worth dressing up for – and most of the guests have got the memo. The food? Inventive, interesting sharing plates designed for sociable feasting. The menu is extensive, so you’ll have to take a moment to absorb its workings. If you’re not exactly good at making decisions, leave it up to the chef with their Omakase Gold Set Menu for two. Excellent oxtail croquettes become thrilling with an umami-charged truffle mayo and truffle shavings. Salmon sushi rolls are spiked with a glorious fermented bean emulsion and sweet soy glaze. Larger dishes, such as wagyu ribeye and lobster tail on sticks cooked over coals, cement the restaurant’s tenacity for execution. The contrasts that explode with every bite are the house trademark. The best dish on the menu, though, might be the yellowtail hamachi – sliced fish in a pool of fermented chilli-infused oil, enlivened by black garlic and a confit egg yolk. The hits continue to dessert: Matcha cheesecake with a shortbread crust, white chocolate and matcha crème, and lucuma sorbet providing an elegant finish. From start to finish, the tempo and delivery are flawless. Certainly don’t miss the signature cocktails – the Tokyo Skyline is superb.

SILK ASIAN FUSION
You’d be forgiven for thinking that Silk Asian Fusion is just another small-plates spot. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that; it’s a Cape Town favourite for a reason.) But Silk Asian Fusion – the newest venture from the team behind other beloved haunts like Bouchon Wine Bar & Bistro in the City Centre and La Boheme Wine Bar & Bistro in Sea Point –is perhaps the platonic ideal of a modern Asian restaurant. While it’s dark and moody, the dining room is a joy to spend time in, especially after a few sake cocktails (the Geisha Martini is a must). Think a metallic palette of gold, bronze and silver, a greentiled bar, cascading hanging plants, Buddha statues and cherry blossoms painted on the walls. You’re in for a good time. The menu mirrors the interior of the restaurant, with familiar yet intriguing Asian creations. We’d advise sharing as many dishes as you can muster. Not sure what to prioritise? Kick off proceedings with the generously stuffed and flavourpacked shrimp dumplings; fried wontons made with
an unconventional lamb filling in a miso broth; and Korean fried chicken wings tossed in a sticky gochujang sauce – thoroughly messy, but seriously good. Next up is by far some of the best tempura prawns we’ve ever tasted. The combination of a light, thin and crunchy exterior (successfully jazzed up with a soy glaze and sesame seeds) encasing the steamed prawns is utterly sublime. As is the wasabi mayo dipping sauce. As the feast continues, choose from cushiony bao buns packed with crispy fish, Asian slaw and jalapeño mayo or Chashu pork belly, rainbow slaw and fermented chilli mayo. And it’s not an Asian affair without some robatayaki. Carnivores are in for a real treat: Meat eaters won’t be able to get enough of the tantalising charcoal-grilled lamb ribs brushed with tonkatsu sauce. Silk Asian Fusion is the real deal.

HAUTE CABRIÈRE RESTAURANT
The OG of destination dining in Franschhoek, Haute Cabrière Restaurant continues to shine as a beacon of how to do it right. A cellar chock-full of storied labels and the well-upholstered, light-filled room set the scene, but head chef Charlton Prins’s new two- or three-course set menu is the headliner. Case in point: The lemon-infused orzo with flash-fried calamari and prawns, finished with the vibrant herbaceous touch of basil. But first, starters of striking creativity and precision. A red fruit salad in basil oil and aged balsamic vinegar balances the sweetness of watermelon and strawberries with rich, creamy burrata. Slow-cooked lamb ribs shine in apricot and sherry sauce with a medley of sweetcorn, spinach and spring onion. Main courses, like the sunset-hued orzo pasta, draws contented sighs across the room thanks to its congregation of fresh seafood, garlic, chilli and lemon butter. Plants hold their own when playing with protein, too – perhaps earthy turnips complementing herb-crusted venison loin or braised fennel hearts, asparagus and baby marrow elevating pan-fried Franschhoek trout. There’s more to come, too. Not much goes better with chocolate cake than dark chocolate mousse, salted caramel and macadamia ice cream. The addition of cardamom gives an edge of spice to the thick and luscious French dessert known as crémeux, plated with marinated citrus and honey ice cream. It all happens with glorious views of vineyards and distant hazy mountains –and there’s a similarly impressive, estate-heavy wine list to match. No leisurely lunch is complete without a sparkling rosé. Made from pinot noir grapes, the Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose is so fabulously fruity, it almost makes you blush. In short? Haute Cabrière Restaurant is still going strong.
Whatever the time of day and whatever your mood, there’s something at The Restaurant at Morgenster to suit every occasion. In summer, it’s open Wednesday to Saturday from 11h00 to 22h00, and Sunday from 11h00 to 18h00. The all-weather alfresco terrace is heaven on balmy summer nights. Languid. Dreamy. Let’s start – as you should – with the focaccia. Not only is The Restaurant at Morgenster’s version outstanding with its high olive oil content, moist middle and crunchy, slightly fried exterior, but it announces the restaurant’s intentions immediately. This is a place with its heart in and focus on Italy. Ease in by grazing on caprese, the classic tomato and fior di latte mozzarella salad, and a plate of blushing tuna tartare with capers, lemon and extra-virgin olive oil. To celebrate summer, The Restaurant at Morgenster has expanded its menu to include tartare and carpaccio dishes. Brilliant. For the main event, butter-tender fritto misto – lightly fried calamari, prawns and zucchini piled high and splashed with lemon – might be a safe option, but it’s also executed masterfully. We’re especially in love with the prawn linguine. The combination of sweet prawns, al dente pasta and a slurpable tomato sauce (spiked with chilli and garlic) brings immeasurable pleasure to meal times. Gnocchi remains unmissable, too – there’s
nonna-level comfort in the hearty three-meat ragù finished with a blizzard of Parmesan. The wine list is adventurous in the best way; Italian varietals, of course. What’s exciting about the light-bodied Morgenster Vespri Vermentino white wine is it can be deliciously complex in taste. If you’ve any room left for dessert, there’s a stunning summer fruit semifreddo and Italian torta caprese – a flourless cake made with dark chocolate and almonds.
Stellenbosch’s dining scene has come leaps and bounds in recent years, now home to a wealth of restaurants that rival the ranks of Franschhoek. But where do the locals really pull up a chair? It’s one thing to check off the big-name spots, but there’s something special about eating where the locals do. Genuine atmosphere, honest flavours and a sense of belonging you won’t find anywhere else. So, we scoped out four new Stellenbosch restaurants the locals would probably rather keep to themselves – yet we’re sharing the scoop.
Your secret’s safe with us!
EATERY AT WINSHAW VINEYARDS
The places we enjoy most are local, usually operated by second- or thirdgeneration family members. Tucked away on Winshaw Vineyards, this charming farm-to-table eatery serves up rustic share plates and small-scale wines. This part of Stellenbosch’s food scene was put on the wider map when Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery opened at Spier Wine Farm, followed by Geuwels and Clara’s Barn at Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate. Last year, Brothers JP and Pierre Winshaw followed suit with Eatery at Winshaw Vineyards. While JP and Pierre run both Winshaw Vineyards and Usana Pastures, Pierre’s wife, Elizabeth, has brought her culinary vision to life by opening a restaurant that gathers the best of what the surrounding fields have to offer. Ingredients are all from the farm and suppliers nearby. In the converted heritage building itself are roughly finished walls and reed ceilings – a space of simplicity decorated with unique trinkets and textiles that add depth and warmth. One side is the tasting room, on the other the dining room. The compact menu – grass-fed beef steak with chimichurri or béarnaise, a grass-fed beef burger and artichoke gratin made with ricotta cheese – is scribbled on a blackboard. Occasionally, there are specials like bone marrow, beef bourguignon, a brisket burger and parmigiana di melanzane, which quickly sell out. Sharing is encouraged. It’s hard not to feel the love with dishes like the perfectly portioned, densely flavoursome steak. Simple, sustainable, memorable. The gratin is a close rival. Warm, creamy and stacked with thin slices of artichoke, this creation might just steal the limelight. The mains come with hand-cut chips and aioli, but we also recommend ordering the table salad – a green salad with Usana eggs featuring shockingly orange molten yolks. If there’s a highlight at Eatery at Winshaw Vineyards, it’s dessert: Small-batch vanilla sweet cream ice cream made with a recipe of fresh cream, milk, sugar and eggs. Winshaw Vineyards, Baden Powell Drive, Stellenbosch 083 650 9528
LIEVLAND CAFÉ
One of best-kept secrets is the newly opened Lievland Café. Lievland Vineyards is a historical farm home to a strikingly beautiful Cape Dutch manor house. Serving luxurious comfort food in a casual contemporary setting, Lievland Café has locals swooning. The kitchen is led by an accomplished team – Christophe and Susan Dehosse and Garth Bedford, the minds behind The Vine Bistro at Glenelly and The Kraal at Joostenberg Wine Estate – along with head chef Gareth Goliath. Discreet service ensures a serene scene where all is in balance, within the room and on the plate. Amid all the greenery are deep blue walls, bare timber tables and golden lighting. A must-visit for lunch, it’s especially pleasant to take refuge in this space when the weather is at its most bleak. If the decor isn’t soul-warming enough, the hearty lunches certainly will be. In warmer months, pull up a chair next to the sun-drenched windows. The venue has ample space for groups or cosy corners for two. Sweet treats and satisfying savoury options are both taken seriously on the menu, shaped by an uncompromising everything-from-scratch approach. From the opener of Mignonette oysters festooned with just-picked flowers to the slivers of smoked trout atop warm new potatoes enveloped in a lemony
chive sauce, freshness and purity are constants. Parisian gnocchi, for one, practically vibrates with the flavour of roast tomato, aubergine, artichoke and fresh herbs. Creamy peppercorn sauce complements succulent sirloin steak with an essential side of potato wedges and salad – almost a meal in itself. But if comfort food is calling your name, answer those cravings with the cheesy pancake filled with gammon and spinach. For pudding, order the Basque cheesecake that’s more like a cloud cake with a well-developed caramelised skin, or one of the silkiest dark chocolate mousses you’ll have the fortune to come across. Don’t skip out on the caffeine hit, either.
Farm-to-table isn’t just a tagline at Melfort. Despite Marianne Wine Estate’s central location, the sense of peace and quiet is second to none. Melfort’s main dining space looks out over a serene lily pond from a wooden deck. Peacocks roam the property and chickens peck at the ground, soundtracked by little more than the distant chirp of birds. Diners, meanwhile, leisurely make their way through chef-owner Tasmin Reed’s hyper-local seasonal menu. Three years after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that forced her to leave the kitchen, she thought her chef days were over. Now, through Melfort, she’s sharing the food that restored her health. The à la carte menu might include stillwarm sesame seed-encrusted sourdough; pockets of spring pea and buffalo curd agnolotti; slow-roasted leg of lamb teamed with onion gravy and garden pesto; point brisket that’s slow-smoked before it’s served with gremolata and a rich red wine jus; and vegan cauliflower cheese casserole that bakes roasted cauliflower and cashew cheese together until bubbly. There’s a light, unpretentious touch here, also apparent on the five-course set menu, which is served
for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays and lunch on Sundays. If you can nab a Sunday booking, long lunch is the play. Dishes are uniformly pretty and full of farm-to-fork flavours. During our visit, a delicate zucchini flower starter – featuring buffalo curd, charred tomatoes, nasturtium flowers and the lactic goodness of Dalewood Huguenot cheese for good measure – commenced the menu with confidence. The sides shared with the mains were another standout. Braaid cos lettuce and tenderstem broccoli combined char, crunch and depth of flavour with aplomb. Add the blissfully smooth rhubarb custard tart and Melfort is very easy to digest. It’s a place of surprises, storytelling – and inspired food.

MILL ST BISTRO
Think of Mill St Bistro as bistro-plus. A neighbourhood local given a bit more muscle by the high polish chef Phil Carmichael gives his food. The Welsh chef, a former protégé of culinary legends Gordon Ramsay and Michel Roux J, has honed his skills across the UK and Europe. He’s now bringing his international expertise to Stellenbosch. Inside is a celebration of good, simple design, achieved through a mix of earthy colours, natural light, potted plants in woven baskets and local ceramics by Mervyn Gers. The room isn’t huge but the comfort level is high, service is affable and a handpicked wine list featuring selections from small-scale vineyards covers the bases. At Mill St Bistro, chef Phil turns out food that surprises in its precision – and offers consistently good value. He’s a gentle man who likes his food to do the talking.
European training underpins starters such as Wild Kalahari beef tartare, a dish of contrasts: The mellow meat and rich egg yolk sitting against pickled mushrooms and grilled flatbread. Another highlight is the Saldanha Bay oysters – carefully sourced and sublimely fresh – doused with Vietnamese dressing, as well as the oozy jalapeño and Klein River Gruberg cheese croquettes. The main courses, in particular, have chef Phil’s stamp. Perhaps most impressive is the free-range beef steak served with chips and an organic baby leaf salad. It’s got the marbling you’d expect from grass-fed beef, interlacing lovely ruby-red flesh. The burnt aubergine ketchup comes on the side, so you can add it to your taste. The day boat-caught fish is another affirmation of chef Phil’s way with flavours. Sweetcorn succotash with mussels and ginger, along with baby marrow and nasturtium pesto, meshes well with the fish. As a curtain call, citrus crème brûlée with green cardamom shortbread and freshly baked, golden-brown malva madeleines (even better when dipped into the miso butterscotch) make for a playful finish. Our verdict: This bistro is hot stuff.
The Seychelles: A must-visit – and not just for your
honeymoon
The word ‘paradise’ is thrown around a lot when it comes to the islands of the Indian Ocean. But this idyllic archipelago east of Kenya and north of Madagascar is just that. Across the 115 islands, you’ll find both exoticism and elitism – secluded beaches, apatite-blue sea, brightly-hued hibiscus, hawksbill turtles, dramatic rock formations and vibrant multiculturalism. And that’s to say nothing of the incredible resorts tucked along its shores. A lush tropical wonderland, Constance Ephelia has all the ingredients you might want for a truly magical Seychelles getaway.
THE SETTING
Choosing where to stay in the Seychelles can be difficult as you try to decipher which resort is going to be right for you. Almost all of them have preternaturally beautiful beaches, eco credentials, moreish ocean views and gourmet cuisine – but some really do stand out for their attention to detail and unique offering. This is certainly the case for Constance Ephelia, a full-blown lifestyle destination that’s complete with activities that will cater to everyone. The setting is hard to beat – this sprawling Seychelles resort covers 120 hectares on the main island of Mahé; a magic that other resorts in the region can’t compete with. In addition to abundant natural beauty and wildlife, Mahé boasts 18th- and 19th-century French and British architecture, the highest mountain ranges in the Seychelles and the world’s smallest capital, Victoria. The eco-friendly property occupies almost the entirety of a headland at Port Launay, approximately a 40-minute drive from the airport. Filled with lush tropical forest vegetation and soaring coconut palms, Constance Ephelia manages to feel like it’s in its own world, yet every spot feels secluded. The resort is connected by a wide grey pathway that passes through a section of mangrove forest, linking its two sides. Both the northern and southern sides open onto postcard-perfect white-sand beaches. The southern cove, Lans Ilet, is especially calm, with shallow waters extending far from the shore. The northern beach, framed by the Seychelles’ iconic giant granite boulders, is the most picturesque and otherworldly setting. It’s easy to see why Constance Ephelia is a hit with honeymooners, but it’s more than just a romantic destination. Whether you’re looking for ultimate relaxation, an indulgent holiday, a wellbeing retreat or an outdoorsy escape, this is the place where you can do it all. No trouble in paradise. None whatsoever.
ROOMS
The largest resort in the Seychelles – and among the most expansive in the Indian Ocean – Constance Ephelia was constructed on a grand scale. The 313 rooms and villas with traditional pavilion-style roofs are arranged throughout the property. The accommodations range from 42 Tropical Garden View Rooms and 184 Junior Suites to 40 Senior Suites, 22 Family Villas, 16 Beach Villas, 8 Hillside Villas and the exclusive Presidential Villa. Some are set amid palm trees and climbing tropical vines, others are built into the steep hillside, and many have king-size beds, espresso machines, outdoor showers and
private pools. If we had to choose? The 62-square-metre Junior Suites. They’re perfectly located on the southern side of the resort, close enough to walk to breakfast and the spa without a buggy, but still very private. Central swimming pools provide all-day entertainment, while thick-cushioned sun loungers make full use of the ocean view. Sunset fiends will want the villas, though. The resort channels laid-back luxury with interiors inspired by a natural palette that celebrates its immersive surroundings. Polished rich mahogany is livened up with a spectrum of turquoise and seafoam green. The effect is soothing. Whilst the rooms offer modern conveniences, they retain their authentic feel through unique artworks and custom-made furnishings. All rooms enjoy air-conditioning, ceiling fans, tea- and coffee-making facilities, a minibar with sweet and savoury treats, unobtrusive TVs, fluffy robes and expansive terraces with seating for soaking in the Seychelles’ balmy ocean breeze. The complimentary mineral water is refilled daily in glass bottles to reduce plastic waste. Each bathroom has a roomy tub, large shower, double vanity and an additional makeup mirror. It’s also worth calling out the truly fantastic closets. There’s plenty of space to spread out.
DINING
When it comes to its gastronomic offerings, Constance Ephelia again breaks the expectations we have of resorts. You’ll get to lap up plenty of luxuries throughout your stay, even its vintage wines and fish plucked fresh from the coast. The property has five restaurants and six bars, all perfectly placed in spectacular settings. The culinary centre is Corossol restaurant, where the breakfast buffet provides an excellent start to the day. Prepare for multiple courses. Live stations include omelettes, pancakes, and wok and tandoori choices. And do start with the freshly cut tropical fruits and delicious croissants. The charcuterie selection of meats and cheeses will impress even the most discriminating guests. At Helios, there’s a superb modern Mediterranean menu. It begins with fresh ceviche starters and ends with a sweet-tooth option of French toast with praline crème and salted butter caramel ice cream. There’s also classic caprese salad
and beef fillet drenched in carrot-ginger dressing, plus linguine with Coëtivy Island prawns, anchovy breadcrumbs and melted mozzarella. Equally good is Adam & Eve. It delivers Asian-fusion dishes you won’t forget in a hurry. The pan-seared tuna loin with punchy coriander and lemongrass notes is the perfect opening plate, followed by the satay skewers with peanut sauce. The undeniable star is the Thai pineapple fried rice, presented in a pineapple bowl with prawns, garlic, egg and cashew nuts. Another of the restaurants, Seselwa, takes diners on an epicurean adventure. Vegetarians, pescatarians and meat eaters alike will delight at the options available. There’s traditional creole food such as jerk pork and sausage rougail. However, one signature creation you shouldn’t miss is the octopus curry – the national dish of the Seychelles, prepared with wonderfully tender octopus, creamy coconut milk and eggplant.
WOW FACTOR
There are many ways to be wined and dined at Constance Ephelia. But what could beat kicking off your shoes and wiggling your toes in the sand to experience barefoot luxury at its finest? For something special, head straight to Cyann, Constance Ephelia’s signature restaurant – available at an additional cost and not included in full- or half-board packages. The epitome of quiet luxury overlooking the aquamarine (yes, actually aquamarine) waters, Cyann offers a laid-back lunch option. Super-attentive service, the freshest of seafood and an air of sophistication combine into a pampered world all its own. Dreamy. Here’s the place to try the local slipper lobster salad, finely diced with green apple, Japanese mayo and celery cream, or juicy prawns and a glass of crisp white wine. Cooked dishes of grilled fish and sushi come out artfully presented and in bountiful portions. It’s also an oenophile’s dream to find a wine list this extensive on an island in the Indian Ocean. Wine pairings are considered suggestions by the resident sommelier, who oversees the impressive wine cellar. When you’re not eating your weight’s worth in seafood, make sure to book a spa date at the Constance Spa, the biggest in the Indian Ocean. This cool sanctuary welcomes guests with a serene ambiance and tinkling water. The bespoke treatment menu includes Sisley facials, invigorating massages and wellness treatments, along with manicures and pedicures. We can’t recommend the 60-minute couples massage highly enough. It’s hard to describe the feeling of relaxation, particularly since we spent most of it drifting in and out of sleep. While here, don’t forget to take advantage of its other facilities, including a dry sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, various pools as well as a Kneipp footpath. Or return for an early-morning yoga session (if you can extract yourself from bed in time).
THINGS TO DO
Constance Ephelia might appear, at first glance, like a destination for couples. But beyond the champagne sundowners and spa experiences designed for two, it’s wonderful for families too. Here, you can embrace tranquility or seek excitement at your own pace. North Beach is the focal point of the resort and is busy with water babies all day. Buggies are needed to get around the property, however, staff are always available to take you to the northern area whenever you wish. Vast rattan daybeds are great for lunchtime snoozes under beach towels, and there’s no shortage of sunbeds – front row or otherwise. Families can also hang out in their villas with huge terraces and private pools. The kids’ club means grown-ups can easily flee to Zee Bar for some R & R. A sneaky poke around looked very promising – a wooden playground, creative activities for all ages and a kids’ pool with the cutest mini sun loungers to match. Speaking of which, the palm-lined paths encourage adults to be big
kids and cycle around all day. Activities available at Constance Ephelia include non-motorised watersports, hiking, bike tours, squash, tennis, beach volleyball and ziplining. Feeding the Aldabra giant tortoises snacks of leafy greens and watermelon, or a snorkel around Port Launay Marine Park, is a delight for the whole family. You’ll never hear a single wail of “I’m bored”. Elsewhere, Kabana Beach Bar’s easy-come-easy-go vibe and chilled-out soundtrack make it easy to lose all sense of time as day falls into night. And no one waits till cocktail hour to get things shaking. Flop on a lounge chair as you peer over your paperback with a passion fruit caipirinha. It’s all so deliciously chilled, with rare birds tweeting in the treetops and sun-kissed staff catering to your every whim. Across the resort, staff are very professional, but in a warm and breezy manner that’s perfectly suited to the environment.
WHAT TO PACK
You’re not going to need much more than swimwear, your floatiest linen bits, sunnies, a woven bag and claw clips to keep your hair off your skin in the rising temperatures. Throw in a wide-brimmed straw hat for sun protection when you’re lounging in between swims. A lightweight coverup dress and day-to-night sandals is the perfect thing to wear over your suit and to the beach bar. Sit back, relax, drink a frozen cocktail, repeat. If you plan to head on any long kayaking or snorkelling sessions at Constance Ephelia, pack sporty bikinis and sun protection gear. Beauty wise – hair oil is a must after all that sun and sea. And don’t forget the basics like sunscreen and antihistamines. But don’t worry if do you forget something; the resort has a shop for any essentials you might need. Plus, you’ll find mosquito repellent waiting for you in your room. Be sure to use it regularly, as mosquitoes can be common, especially during the evenings.
Air Seychelles operates convenient direct flights from Johannesburg to Mahé. For a more budget-friendly option, both Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines offer flights with layovers – Kenya Airways in Nairobi and Ethiopian Airlines in Addis Ababa.

A NEW CHAPTER
IN THE JOURNEY OF HAZENDAL
As South Africa’s summer season gets into full swing there’s a buzz of excitement across Cape Town and the Western Cape. And perhaps nowhere more so than Hazendal Estate in the Stellenbosch Winelands, where this historic Cape farm recently unveiled The Hazendal boutique hotel, transforming this elegant estate into a truly multifaceted Winelands destination.
The Hazendal boutique hotel opens with 34 rooms and suites, and the remarkable design has ensured the new hotel blends effortlessly into the existing heritage architecture of this storied Cape estate. With a beautiful location overlooking a picturesque reservoir, the whitewashed walls and pitched roofs pay tribute to the rich history of the farm – one of the oldest in the Cape – all while creating a contemporary country destination for leisure and corporate travellers.
And there’s certainly a room to suit every type of traveller too. For that special occasion, the hotel’s flagship Presidential Suite offers indulgent levels of comfort, with a spacious living area spilling out onto a large outdoor deck complete with a private jacuzzi. Spacious Junior Suites boast private terraces overlooking landscaped gardens and manicured vineyards of the Bottelary Hills, while entry-level Superior Rooms gaze out through trellised jasmine across the sun-splashed central courtyard that’s home to the gorgeous hotel swimming pool.
These are ideal if you love to roll out of bed and onto a sun lounger! Inter-leading rooms and suites offer an array of options for families, with an in-house cinema room to keep young ones entertained too.
Whichever room or suite you’re in, you’ll find a common thread of inspired décor and design, from the bespoke artworks scattered across the public and private spaces to the thoroughly modern curated aesthetic. Across the hotel’s rooms and suites, the décor takes its cue from the surrounding Winelands, with a palette of natural tones and textures inspiring the thoroughly opulent accommodation.
That sense of contemporary indulgence informs every corner of the hotel, from the serene wellness spa, offering a range of bespoke treatments using local and global products, to the contemporary dining experience at The Restaurant. Here Executive Chef Michélle Theron’s concise menu of elevated bistro-style cuisine finds inspiration in the surrounding Winelands, infusing local flavours and a sense of seasonality into the offering. Elegant tables spill out onto the courtyard terrace, offering a magical destination for al fresco summer dining.
And you’ll certainly be spending plenty of time al fresco at Hazendal, whether it’s suntanning at the pool, playing on the Padel court (complimentary for in-house guests) or honing your swing out on the 18-hole par-3 golf course. There’s also the Putting Park and the Wonderdal edutainment centre, which offers enormous fun for younger guests. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head for The Deli, with tables scattered in the shade of the historic Threshing Circle. Or book a summer picnic basket and find a quiet spot amid the farm’s landscaped fynbos gardens. Wine tastings are hosted in the elegant Wine Lounge, or out on the dappled terrace gazing across the historic werf. Though the farm dates back more than 300 years, Hazendal is a timeless destination, a place at ease with its heritage but imbued with a sense of contemporary luxury. And while it’s long been popular to pop out for the day, the opening of The Hazendal makes a longer sojourn a must this summer.
