Read... In Bad Boy, as before in his impressive body of work, Peter Robinson has tackled and mastered a naggingly recurrent problem for crime writers: the over-familiar scenario. He grabs with both hands the notion of the male/female copper duo eternally at odds with each other and does something subtly different, always coming up with some new innovation to keep cliché firmly at bay. Here again are DCI Alan Banks and his associate DI Annie Cabbot tackling particularly knotty problems, and even though Banks is offstage for a chunk of the action (evidence, again, of Robinson ringing the changes), we are reminded why readers are so at ease with this long-running series: Banks and Cabbot are two of the most distinctive figures in the overcrowded police procedural field. Available from Waterstones £12.99
Watch... Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) is a rare species of Blue Macaw, who is a resident at a bookstore in Moose Lake, Minnesota, and the last male of his kind. When scientists learn that another macaw was spotted in South America and that the macaw, Jewel (Anne Hathaway) is female, they take him out of Minnesota and send him to Rio de Janeiro to meet her. While there, he learns to confront his fear of flying in order to win her heart. Along the way, they get kidnapped by poachers to sell them to get a fortune. After they escape, they try to avoid the thieves and their pet Cockatoo Nigel (Jemaine Clement) with help from Rafael, a wise Toco Toucan (George Lopez); Luiz, a bulldog (Tracy Morgan); Linda, Blu’s owner (Leslie Mann); Flora, a Roseate Spoonbill (Wanda Sykes); Fernando, a teenage boy (Jake T. Austin); Pedro, a Red-crested Cardinal (will.i.am); and Nico, a small Yellow Canary (Jamie Foxx); with bottle cap as a hat. In Cinemas 08/04/2011 Odeon South Woodford
Touch... iPad 2 features an entirely new design that is 33 percent thinner and up to 15 percent lighter than the original iPad, while maintaining the same stunning 9.7-inch LED-backlit LCD screen. iPad 2 features Apple’s new dual-core A5 processor for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics and now includes two cameras, a front-facing VGA camera for FaceTime® and Photo Booth®, and a rear-facing camera that captures 720p HD video, bringing the innovative FaceTime feature to iPad users for the first time. Though it is thinner, lighter, faster and packed with new features, iPad 2 still delivers up to 10 hours of battery life* that users have come to expect. iPad 2 is available in black or white, features models that run on AT&T’s and Verizon’s 3G networks, and introduces the innovative iPad 2 Smart Cover in a range of vibrant polyurethane and rich leather colors. Launch... Satori South Woodford (opposite the Cinema) is the latest hair salon to open its doors on the High Street, following the incredible success of Satori Loughton. “Our spy left with a cut and colour worthy of a celebrity” runs a quote from the Times Newspaper. This exclusive, intimate and independent boutique with only eight chairs, ensures all clients receive the one-on-one personalised service they deserve yet rarely receive from chains, franchises or groups. Prepare to be pampered! To book your appointment call 020 8532 9064
Visit... To coincide with the Royal Wedding, the quilters have been making Union Jack Quilts for the occasion. These beautiful quilts are in all sizes and all the necessary materials can be obtained from Just Between Friends, 44 Station Way, Buckhurst Hill (next to Roding Valley Tube) IG9 6LN, t: 0208 502 9191. These and many other beautiful quilts will be on show at the Roding Valley Quilters Show at St Marys Church Hall, Chigwell on the Bank Holiday weekend of 29th April
Listen... ‘21’ is the second album from singer-songwriter Adele, and like her first record, 2008’s ‘19’, it is named after the age Adele was when she wrote the album. Most of ‘21’ was produced by Rick Rubin, who has worked with some of the biggest acts of the last 20 years, and Florence & The Machine producer Paul Epworth. Lyrically the album reflects Adele’s increased maturity since ‘19’, although it explores many of the same themes. 21 is simply stunning. After only a handful of plays, it feels like you’ve always known it. It will see Adele become an even greater award magnet come the end of the year, leaving her contemporaries for dust. Genuinely brilliant.

ESSEX HAIRDRESSERS ‘TIKADI’ RECEIVES A TOP REWARD
CHARITY RUN The Development of Pancreatic Cancer Research is proud to announce that from their 3 mile run for the 3% survival rate that took place in Hainault Forest on the 6th March 2011 raised a TOTAL of £2922.40 so far. We cannot express enough how appreciative and overwhelmed at the number of runners and walkers that made such a huge effort to not only take part but raise an amazing amount of money for this terrible disease and to help see a future where early detection and a cure is the norm. A great morning was had by, all as the runners and walkers were cheered on their way by the Mayor and
Mayoress of Redbridge who came to support the cause and cut the ribbon at the start of the race . The Development of Pancreatic Cancer Research Charity was formed out of the love and respect of the late Phil Silver and concentrates on raising awareness and creating opportunity to raise much needed funds to the cause of research into Pancreatic Cancer. An increasingly more popular disease that strikes with very few symptoms to the patient and those symptoms can often be so generic that the disease is rarely identified quickly enough to offer a treatment to slow the aggression of the Cancer down.
The Tikadi team recently enjoyed a celebratory lunch with several celebrity hairdressers and founders of the HairRaising campaign including John Frieda himself, Nicky Clarke and Sanrizz’s Tony Rizzo, amongst many others. The well known and respected hairdresser Andrew Collinge also made an appearance in salon to host a special training session for the team! Not only this, additionally the Essex salon owner Michael Memet
will fly to Los Angeles to work with the John Freda team for an entire week in May 2011. Michael said ‘We are so thrilled to have been given these opportunities.Without the hard work of my team, and of course the people that supported us, this wouldn’t have been possible’. The HAIRraising campaign has raised in excess of £500,000 to date for the Great Ormond Street Hospital, world re-known for helping children.

I was greatly surprised to see Brentwood’s Mill Hill take the top spot on your list and expected to see Manor Road in Chigwell make an entry too. Perhaps you may consider publishing an average road list so that mine can be included in the future!! Shelly Keating (Epping)

HOPES & DREAMS On Sunday 27th February we joined over 350 Essex guests for a fabulous night attending a Rock and Pop fundraising evening for local charity Hopes and Dreams at the Prince Regent Hotel in Woodford Bridge. Among the performers was Mitch Winehouse, father of Amy Winehouse, who has since become a patron of the charity. The evening was a huge success and the money raised is being used to send Sonny Nygate, from Hainault, who is being treated for lymphoma at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, to go on his dream family holiday.

SUGAR Rush
THE LANDMARK ESSEX VENUE RE-OPENED ITS DOORS AFTER A MAJOR REFURBISHMENT IN AUGUST 2010 AND MANY WONDERED WHETHER IT COULD REGAIN ITS PLACE AS THE MOST FASHIONABLE LATE NIGHT VENUE IN THE COUNTY.
J
udging by public reaction and the intense media coverage both in print and television, it is clear that not only has Sugar Hut regained its crown as the first choice destination for the more discerning clubbing community of Essex and beyond, it has far surpassed all expectations. The owner, local businessman Michael Norcross, was very aware that Sugar Hut was famed for offering a “West End” experience in Essex and this was very much at the forefront of his mind when planning the subtle changes to the layout of the venue. The beauty lies in the 6 very distinct areas of this wonderful 16th century building. Upon entering through the Georgian facade on the ground floor you will find the long Karma bar. This elegant space features a large bar and dance floor which hints at the Thai theme that has been synonymous with the Sugar Hut brand from its inception in 2001. The music in Karma bar is specifically programmed to offer an upbeat ambiance, a toe tapping prelude to the nightclub above. The nightclub is spread across 3 distinct areas on the 1st floor each offering a different slant of the Sugar Hut experience. Upon climbing the staircase, people naturally gravitate towards the main Club Room. Pulsating music, atmospheric lighting and lasers plus VIP booths and service, usually only associated with London venues that act as playgrounds to those with celebrity or wealthy status,
await. Only the cream of the UK’s DJs and artistes perform to a crowd that invariably knows how to party. Circumnavigating the1st floor leads the expectant clubber into the Gallery. This is the oldest and most authentic part of the building, champagne coloured booths blend effortlessly with 500 year old oak beams and sparkling chandeliers in a beautiful room which instantly engages you in an eclectic mix of the coolest 70s and 80s Jazz Funk, Soul and Disco. In a final twist, you find yourself in the Krug room, the small and intimate VIP haven. Here the music is quieter and chilled, the atmosphere less frenetic than other larger rooms and the perfect spot for those that want to enjoy a clubbing experience at a lesser volume. Unlike any other nightclub, and unique to Sugar Hut, is the fabulous Steak House style restaurant. This joint venture with award winning local restaurateur Matt Mason, has been an instant success. Serving only the finest cuts of beef and fresh locally sourced produce, Mason’s at Sugar Hut offers a delicious menu to start your evening. Eat, drink and dance, a complete night out under one roof. In an era where late night bars and clubs appear to be the domain of teenagers and the early twenties, Sugar Hut, Brentwood stands out as the credible choice for those of us that aren’t ready for bed at 10pm on a Saturday night but by the same token don’t want to be surrounded by rowdy kids. Enjoy. SCENE 31
Week
ESSEX FASHION Photography by Laura Ribeiro Words by Luke Harman
A NEW EVENT HAS CEMENTED ITSELF IN THE ESSEX SOCIAL CALENDAR. BUILDING ON LAST YEAR’S SOLITARY EVENING AT FACES NIGHTCLUB IN GANTS HILL, ESSEX FASHION WEEK (EFW) 2011 WAS BILLED AS A BIGGER AND BETTER THREE-DAY EXTRAVAGANZA. IN ATTENDANCE ON DAY ONE, SCENE MAGAZINE SPENT THE AFTERNOON AT WHAT WILL SURELY SOON PROVE TO BE ONE OF ESSEX’S FLAGSHIP OCCASIONS. “It’s all about putting Essex on the map,” says Adam Ryan, co-founder of Essex Fashion Week. “We’re building this for longevity, hopefully getting bigger and bigger year after year. We’d like to take it to Marbella and other places abroad, all under the Essex name.” This ambition, as shared by Adam’s twin and other co-founder, Simon, is certainly admirable. The pair, who also design their own label showcased at the event (One Off One You) are clearly passionate about what they do and proud of what they have achieved with the occasion, and so they should be. Housed within a grand white marquee on the banks of the great lake at Fairlop Waters in West Essex, the brothers certainly signalled their intentions to produce a classy and well-respected event. Striking lucky with glorious sunshine on the opening day made it an even more impressive spectacle as guests dressed to impress in anticipation of a fashion show perhaps like no other. Greeted by a champagne and strawberry reception, it was evident EFW has indeed endeavoured to deliver a level of sophistication and seriousness to an occasion that threatened to be overshadowed by its unavoidable association with the hit ITV2 show, The Only Way Is Essex. But overshadowed it was not. Scantily decorated with crystal chandeliers and glittery, dangling ceiling fixtures, the interior of the marquee was just as striking as the exterior. Flanked by rows of white leather chairs, each with an exciting goody bag to be had, the white catwalk extended out from behind ruffled white curtains. A lot of white, but a lot of white well used to create an environment of comfort and class.

An eclectic mix of esteem and potential is perhaps the best way to describe the designs on show at EFW. From fresh, independent stores such as La Cherie Boutique, based in Ongar, to highstreet retail giant, New Look, EFW compiled a convincing array of contemporary and inspiring on trend fashion collections. Perhaps the star of the show, however, was Basildon-based designer and stylist, Joey Bevan. Fresh off the catwalk at Britain’s Next Top Model Live in October 2010 and, more recently, exhibiting at the Ideal Home Show last month, his label, Pointed Brown Shoes, centres on the ever-increasing popularity of garment recycling. Crafting new and unique items from unwanted clothes and other materials such as shower curtains, Joey delivers designs that are not only environmentally-friendly but, somewhat surprisingly, ultra stylish. The inspiration and indeed the name for his label come from the footwear he was wearing on the day. “They were made from vintage luggage,” he explains. “I know when I go out nobody else is wearing them and that’s what I try and do when I’m designing. I even give each piece its own certificate.” Also impressing at EFW was Japanese designer Masato. Having worked under the guardianship of top designers such as Giles Deacon and Kate Halfpenny, Masato was aiming to impress with this his first solo womenswear collection. Inspired by the human senses he endeavours to capture the sensations of touch and smell in his creations.
“I compare my clothes to women’s perfume bottles,” he says. “They inspire the colour, texture and fabric of my designs. I try not to follow conventional shapes and just do what I feel is right.” Another more surprising contributor to the showcase was premiership footballer, Bolton Wanderer’s, JLloyd Samuel. Co-designed by his wife, Emma, the Sweetboy and Sweetgirl ranges of childrenswear depict images of sweets on to funky t-shirts, hoodies, jackets and caps. “It’s quite a quirky range and the wrappers the clothes come in are like Haribo packets. It’s cool for the kids,” explained JLloyd. With interludes from Jeremy Lynch, a football freestyle/body popping act, and up and coming R&B singer, Japha, the opening day of Essex Fashion Week was not simply an exhibition of high fashion and design but a platform for other local talent and entertainment. 2011 could mark the start of big things for Essex Fashion Week and the Ryan brothers. With ambitions to join the revered ranks of Milan, Paris and New York they perhaps have some way to go. In regards to London Fashion Week, however, Essex Fashion week could well be on its way to being the little brother London never knew it had. SCENE 35

HYPOXI Experiment AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, I WAS INVITED TO TRIAL AN EIGHTEEN SESSION HYPOXI PROGRAMME – AFTER THE EXCESSES OF CHRISTMAS, I JUMPED AT THE CHANCE. I’VE BEEN OVERWEIGHT SINCE MY EARLY THIRTIES BUT TWO BABIES IN MY LATE THIRTIES RESULTED IN MY REACHING 15 STONE. OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, I HAVE MANAGED TO LOSE A COUPLE OF STONE THROUGH DIET AND EXERCISE BUT I AM ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR SOME “EXTRA HELP”.
WORDS BY CAROLINE NICHOLLS
A
ll in all the experience was fantastic. Over the course of six weeks (3 sessions a week), I’ve lost 6 and a half pounds in weight and a total of 20.4 inches around my waist, hips, bottom and thighs – my major problem areas! I’ve had to face some hard facts about my body shape (I think I was definitely in denial) but the tape measure and the hypoxi suit don’t lie! However, facing your demons is half the battle to successful weight loss – acknowledging that you are not happy about your weight, committing to do something about it and then doing it is the only way that all of us are going to get the body we are happy with. What Hypoxi offers is a solution that enables you to focus on the specific areas that need attention. The HYPOXI method encourages fat loss specifically in your problem areas through the application of a vacuum pressure while you are working out. If like me, you exercise regularly, the hypoxi treatments themselves – the vacunaut, upright bike and reclining bike – are not too strenuous but it’s
nice to know that you are targeting the areas that need it most. If you’re not used to working out you will find the Hypoxi gym a much less frightening and a much more welcoming place than a regular gym and the treatments are very manageable even for those who are not that fit. There are a number of Hypoxi salons in the area, and I chose to attend the branch in South Woodford on the High Road. The salon is owned and managed by Sylwia Pajor, a no-nonsense Polish lady, who looks amazing only 3 months after having a baby, and her partner Steve Blackman. They are both the picture of health and fitness so a fabulous walking advertisement for their salon. They extended me a very warm welcome, were incredibly supportive and genuinely wanted me to succeed on this journey. Overall I felt much better as a result of the experience. During the first three weeks I definitely experienced some detox effects – spots appeared and there were some significant differences in my toiletry habits and I felt much more energized as a result of the
programme. After the treatments I felt a lot less hungry than normal. After each treatment you should only eat protein for six hours after so that certainly helped the diet too! I would wholeheartedly recommend Hypoxi for people who are looking to lose weight and change their body shape. It is a good complement to an existing exercise and healthy eating regime and by doing all three you will achieve results. Also Hypoxi whilst giving you results also provides you with some serious “me time” – as the exercise is not too strenuous, you can indulge in reading magazines but still lose inches! Too good to be true? Try it for yourself and see! For more information visit HYPOXI South Woodford, 24 High Road, LONDON, E18 2QL or call 020 8989 2700

Ash Welcomes... FIRST IMPRESSIONS REALLY COUNT WHEN YOU MEET SOMEONE. I AM SURE WE WILL ALL AGREE THAT WE FEEL MORE ATTRACTED TO SOMEONE WHO LOOKS GOOD, HAS A NICE SMILE AND FEELS CONFIDENT
At “Smile Design By Ash”, we offer a comprehensive range of dental care to achieve a naturally beautiful and healthy smile, at a price you can afford with flexible finance options. I am also proud to announce the services of two talented artists who have joined the business. Ashlene McCormack is an experienced permanent make up artist. I first met her recently as a patient. I was fascinated by her talent and the case studies that she showed me of her work. Ashlene will now be advising and caring for women who want to look their best and lead an active lifestyle not worrying about putting on perfect makeup everyday! The other “star” I feel privileged to work with is Frances Furlong. Frances is our expert on nonsurgical facial aesthetics. She offers a comprehensive range of facial treatments for younger and healthier looking skin. Frances has an impressive background of academic training and is an opinion leader in the facial aesthetics industry (e.g. she recently was a key speaker to an audience of 600 at a facial aesthetics conference in London). So, for a winning smile, stunning make up, and the best solutions for wrinkle free skin, look no further than the newest dental practice in Chigwell - Smile Design By Ash.

hether it’s big beautiful eyes, a perfect pout or defined eyebrows, every girl wants something she has not been given naturally or wishes she could turn back time and recreate the features she used to have.
Women dream of waking up in the morning and looking as beautiful as they do after just applying their makeup and more and more women of all ages are opting for a more permanent look to make the best of their features. With eight years of permanent makeup experience under her needle, Ashlene McCormack uses her techniques to help women achieve the permanent makeup look 24/7. She is a pro in bringing out the best in people’s features as well as using her makeup artistry skills to correct those not-so-perfect areas. “Lip enhancements can create and correct shape, add volume and 38 SCENE

Ashlene is sought after for her signature hair stroke, eyebrow treatments which offer realistic, natural looking results and bring 70% of new business through the door. Brows are so important because they frame the face and, when correctly placed, they lift the eye, giving a groomed, youthful and fresh look. Great brows will make your eyes stand out, not draw attention to the brow itself. Ashlene says, “Recent fashion trends have created a younger clientele requesting stronger

The treatments are a cosmetic tattoo and last for 3 - 4 years although, to keep optimum results and colours fresh, a colour boost is recommended every 12 18 months. Ashlene says: “The main thing that puts women off is perceived pain and the fear that they won’t like the result.” Careful consultation and exceptional customer care ensures a treatment plan is devised to create the perfect enhancement for each and every client. numbing agents used to ensure treatments are as comfortable as possible. Clients regularly say that plucking eyebrow hair is more uncomfortable than the procedure itself!
For those women reading this who have difficulty creating a perfect brow every day, this is the answer: not only is it there when you wake up, it’s there after all your activities, through all conditions and at the end of an evening.
Lips can be uncomfortable and generally clients need to have a reasonable pain tolerance to consider undertaking treatment but at Smile Design by Ash they are in the unique position to offer total anaesthesia so more clients can have the luscious lips they’ve only dreamed of.
Eye treatments are also popular, defining eyes with a look that can be as subtle or distinctive as clients want. Whether opting for delicate definition, a sprinkling of colour or defining bolder looks, Ashlene always recommends a look suitable for day wear. Imagine beginning each day with brighter, younger, sexier eyes
Ashlene McCormack will be offering her services at Smile Design by Ash on Tuesdays. For appointments call Ashlene or alternatively visit her website for more information. 07970 290009 www.perfectmakeup.co.uk

fter 3 years, Frances moved into laser ophthalmology and became nursing sister responsible for 3 clinics in the south of England. This inspired her to move into laser dermatology and aesthetics where she became a specialist in laser and light treatments, gaining her diploma in 2006. In 2004, with a keen interest in acne management and scar revision, she was awarded an honours degree in aesthetic medicine from the University of Greenwich. Since 2005, Frances has written for national newspapers with her own weekly advice column ‘Ask the Expert’. She has also written for numerous publications, such as Elle, Woman and Home, Top Sante, Aesthetic Medicine and Cosmetic News. In February of this year, she was asked to be a beauty judge for Instyle magazine and has made TV appearances on GMTV demonstrating the use of Mesotherapy. Frances was asked to speak at Professional Beauty this year where she presented her bespoke treatment, ‘The 8 week non surgical face lift’. She qualified as an independent nurse prescriber from the University of Essex last year and is a member of The Royal College of Nurses. Aesthetic by Frances Furlong offers all types of aesthetic treatments: muscle relaxing injections, dermal fillers for lips and lines, volumising fillers, face peels, dermal roller, mesotherapy for skin rejuvenation, cellulite and localised fat reduction, laser and intense pulsed light treatments. By offering patients a wide choice of treatments, you can be sure the right tailored made package can be made for all client needs.
Before
Bespoke treatment, 8 week non surgical face lift, combines the best in facial enhancement and its results were spoken about by Frances in Professional Beauty Excel London where she was a guest speaker. With celebrities
mentioned in the press as being huge fans, such as Madonna and Cameron Diaz, it is a very sought after treatment. Typically patient age groups are 30-65 years. The treatments are all given on the same day following the initial consultation process. It involves dermal filler, Radiesse®, being injected into the facial areas where there is loss of volume, typically the cheek areas and nose to mouth lines. Next, a personalised mesotherapy serum is applied to the face: this is used to boost collagen and make the skin brighter and fresher, help to resolve conditions such as uneven skin tone, brown marks on the skin, open pores and fine lines. The final step is a dermal roller treatment which is a fantastic way to boost collagen, repair scar tissue and rejuvenate the skin. After treatment, patients return 8 weeks later for a follow up appointment: Radiesse® and the dermal roller treatment need this time to work fully. Further improvements can be seen even up to 12 weeks following treatment. The treatment takes around 1 hour 30 mins in total. Another signature treatment is the tired eye treatment featured in Woman and Home Magazine. Many factors can cause the eyes to look tired: lack of sleep, pigmentation, diet, medical problems, ageing and dilated vessels. At the consultation, a full examination of the eyes will be given; if there is hollowing of the eye, a dermal filler may be needed. The treatment consists of 3-5 sessions given at 3-weekly intervals. A local anaesthetic is applied, then a mild exfoliation is given to the area and small amounts of products to help the problem are administered via a micro needle. The treatment time takes around 30 mins. For more information on all the services provided or to book a free consultation please call 020 85000544 SCENE 39

Wanstead may already have numerous beauty salons but owner of Beauty... just around the corner, Gini Bhogal, said what makes her beauty spa stand apart from others is unique products and top quality staff. Following a Valentine’s Day opening, the business is blossoming as word is spreading about the salon’s friendly staff and top quality treatments. Gini, from Ilford, said: “I’m an established make up artist and have a lot of clients who travel to see me. I have a good reputation and customers always seem happy with my work – they come back and recommend other people so that’s always a sign of a good business. “People come in here for the whole day as well – we’ve already had hen parties and 18th birthday parties enjoy our treatments.”
Beauty... just around the corner specialises in spa and beauty treatments, hairdressing and laser treatment for hair and skin as well as Crystal Clear microdermabrassion, Minx nails and Perfect Lash extensions. With 15 years of experience as a make up artist Gini has previously worked her magic for models in Asian magazines, at clothes shoots and also for budding brides on their wedding day. But with a firm base now in Wanstead she is “cutting down” the make up artistry and looking forward to building the spa side of the business. Gini said: “We’re pretty unique with the way we do our massages – every one is started with a ritual that derives from traditions in India. We take the customer on a journey and let them relax and enjoy their treatment.”

our wedding day is the most important one day event you will ever project manage. For some it will be a grand affair with a big budget for hundreds of guests, for others it will be an intimate gathering of family and close friends.
The time to book a consultation with your florist is when you have purchased your wedding dress and decided on the theme and colour scheme for your wedding day. The theme and colour scheme of your day should be evident in the bridal flowers, church flowers and function decor. As the majority of brides wear either white or ivory, the colour scheme of the day is usually dictated by the colour of the bridesmaid dress. The theme of the wedding is sparked by the personality or interest of the couple. The initial consultation is to detail your requirements; bridal bouquet, bridesmaid bouquet, buttonholes, church decor, function decor, corsages, etc. Nothing is set in stone and you will make at least two or three visits, (maybe more), depending on the scale of the event. A variation of the hand-tied domed bouquet bound in satin ribbon is still hot favourite among brides and it is rare to see a modern bride with a down shower bouquet. This could all change with the Royal Wedding in April. Create a bespoke bouquet by binding the stems with the same material as your dress, or incorporate beads, pearls lace or diamante pins similar to any detail on your dress. Your Florist will work with you to create the design best suited to your style of dress and advise on the seasonal availability of your chosen flowers. The groom’s buttonhole and any additional buttonholes should be made with the focal flower of the bride’s bouquet to create unity within the bridal party. Flower girls look cute carrying pomanders, sparkly wands with a single flower and ribbon or baskets. The other female members of the bridal party can wear a corsage on the lapel, shoulder, wrist or handbag. Be extravagant with your church decor as this provides a wonderful backdrop to your photographs and video. Place large pedestals either side of the altar, decorate the base of the pulpit and place pew ends at the end of each row. Decorate any window ledges and place a decorated arch around the entrance of the church. Pillars can be dressed with lush garlands of choice foliage and flowers. The function decor should make your guests say WOW as they enter the room. Select tall designs for function rooms with a high ceiling. Select simple designs such as candelabras with church candles, placed on a glass plate with scattered petals or glass beads or t-lights. Or create a huge loose ball of flowers on the candelabra or around the base of the candelabra. Floating candles in oversized champagne or martini vases look absolutely stunning. A huge ball of mixed flowers in your chosen colour scheme with peacock feathers is to die for. Place hanging t-lights on long stems of contorted willow to create a whimsical table centre. Long and low or round and low arrangements are more suited to low ceilings. The top table should be dressed fit for a King and Queen for the day, whether it is a traditional cascade or a contemporary design of cubes filled with white roses and linked with grasses. Don’t forget the cake table arrangement and fresh flowers to decorate the cake and perhaps a small design for the signing table. If you have had lots of help from family and friends, have a few gift bouquets made up for the Best Man to present during the speeches. Do visit our website www.blushtemples.co.uk

INTUO ALWAYS AHEAD OF THE REST, ANDERSON SINCLAIR DESIGN INTRODUCES AN AUSTRIAN KITCHENS BRAND TO LOOK OUT FOR…
Essex-based Anderson Sinclair Design that takes pride in making stunning bespoke and custombuilt kitchens and furniture. Since 2000, this family-owned business has developed a superb reputation for creating contemporary and classic kitchens, and offers a complete service from conception to installation. With two showrooms in Loughton and Hornchurch, the company has a passion for beautiful and innovative design. Always ahead of trends, Anderson Sinclair is pleased to introduce Intuo by EWE (pronounced AVA) Kitchens, an award-winning contemporary brand from Austria. Intuo is the premium offer from EWE; the company that first brought handle-less kitchens to market over 40 years ago, which is widely renowned across Europe as one of the most innovative and exciting brands for its unique features. Owned by the same company that makes Poggenpohl Kitchens, Intuo is new to the UK, and brings with it some highly advanced and sophisticated designs. Intuo displays are available to view in Anderson Sinclair’s Loughton Showroom and these kitchens are as contemporary as you could find, but because they are all custom-built to specification, they always reflect the style and personality of their owner. Intuo kitchens feature sustainably sourced continuous ‘book-matched’ wood veneers in walnut, beech and oak. This means that with cupboards and doors, the beautiful patina of the natural wood grain continues with a seamless effect throughout. Worktops are either matching lacquer or stone according to desire, and these are combined with either matte or gloss lacquered cupboards and drawers with stunning glass fronted doors. Uniquely, they can all be colourmatched to suit the colour of your walls, as all SCENE 61
Intuo kitchens come to up to 4,000 RAL colours. Therefore every kitchen can be truly personalised, with incredible precision. All handle-less kitchens incorporate touch and drive opening at a single touch, or by sliding an entire cupboard front across another, for easy reachability. With an Intuo design, the utmost consideration is always given to the people that use the kitchen, and food preparation, together with washing, cooling and cooking areas are clearly delineated, while all worktops and appliances are specified according to your height

and requirements. Meanwhile, storage is paramount in any minimalist design, so everything can be carefully hidden from view to ensure seamless lines throughout your kitchen. Intuo features Blum Dynamic Storage Systems in all cupboards and drawers, so there is a place for everything; all pans, utensils and dry foodstuffs are easy to find – and easily accessed. Additional features include remote-controlled shutter units, attractive stainless steel and glass shelves, together with further additional touches that make Intuo kitchens stand out from the rest.
With an array of stunning designs available from Intuo, the kitchens pictured here are just a taste of what you can look forward to when you visit the Anderson Sinclair showroom in Loughton. COOK BOOK OF THE MONTH
Gone are the days of trekking to and from tube stations or spending your hard earned money on taxis to the big smoke, as this April Whitebull Brasserie arrives in Loughton. Head chef of worldrenowned Le Caprice, Lee Bull, is bringing his unrivalled reputation for innovatiion, creativity and style to his home town. The bespoke open plan, glass walled kitchen has been specially designed by Lee so all guests can see him and his highly skilled team at work. All ingredients will be sourced from the British Isles, which is of paramount inportance to Lee, who states: “When we first decided on the concept for the restaurant, we thought Loughton was the ideal location. There is definitely a market for what we want to achieve - quality food at a reasonable price. Influences will be drawn from my experience working at various restaurants across the Caprice Holdings group, including Italian at Daphne’s of Knightsbridge and Vietnamese at Bambou on the other side of London. Working under both Mark Hix and Tim Hughes, the current chef director of the Caprice group, I have experienced a variety of attitudes towards the best local, seasonal ingredients and have learned to highlight the simplest of ideas.” Whitebull Brasserie has already gained vast interest from people who are now queuing to book the private dining room which will be located above the restaurant. Whitebull Brasserie looks forward to its opening at the end of the month - which is tipped to be a star-studded event.........
Tom Aikens is undoubtedly one of the UK’s most talented chefs. His first restaurant, Tom Aikens, has received huge critical acclaim and was awarded a Michelin star a year after opening, sealing Tom’s reputation as a culinary leading light. Tom also drummed up a further legion of fans with the opening of Tom’s Kitchen – an informal all-day brasserie serving familiar and rustic dishes. It is this simple, homely style of cooking that Tom focuses on in his new book. With over 200 recipes there’s something for every occasion, from fast fixes, such as Peppered Steaks with Crushed Roast Garlic or Spiced Mullet Soup with Paprika and Chorizo; to twists on classic comfort food such as Ham and Mustard Macaroni, Toasted Sourdough with Aubergine, Basil and Sheep’s Cheese and Lamb Rump with Rosemary Polenta and Parmesan. There’s also a chapter for weekend cooking – pies, slow-roasts and hearty fare – and one on how to get creative with your leftovers. Other highlights are Tom’s irresistible desserts: Prune and Armagnac Brioche Pudding, Caramel Mousse and Golden Syrup Sponge. The emphasis is on simplicity – recipes that can be prepared and cooked without any hassle or fuss, making cooking a pleasure rather than a chore. Beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned photography and a fresh, striking design, this is set to be a must-have cookery title. From Amazon £16.25 SCENE 73

SEARCHING ENDLESSLY FOR THAT CLASSY JOINT WITH THE BEST PIZZA, PASTA COMBINATION IN TOWN? ‘FORGET ABOUT IT!’ JUST STROLL DOWN WANSTEAD HIGH STREET AND ENTER THE GODFATHER OF ITALIAN RESTAURANTS...GIOBERTI’S.

he cinematic Mafia references are relevant as Gioberti’s wear these classic filmic moments as a badge of traditional pride. Little Italy is apt as the warm lighting and tanned colour scheme highlight the framed legends with the likes of Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Ray Liotta - always comforting to know you are in the presence of greatness. The official stamp of approval comes from 102.2 Smooth Radio awarding the eatery with the Best Neighborhood Restaurant at the Love London Awards 2009. Every inch of this statement feels deserved when seated by one of the many charming servers, who will wine and dine you into a state of relaxation before introducing their latest alluring specials. 74 SCENE
Speak the words ‘Vitello Alla Milanese’ and await a plate served with a succulent, perfectly sized veal escalope, breadcrumbed, crispy and tender where it counts. Accompanied by a well portion side of juicy spaghetti napali, smothered in Gioberti’s distinct sauce, rest assured the competition will be sleeping with the fishes. Not all the fish, however, as another essential choice during your night is the Fillet of sole, a dish of juicy seafood featuring stuffed crab and scallop meat, complimented by the perfect blend of black olives and tomatos. Served with a delicious mash potato and broccoli side, this is the genuine translation of Specialitá. These fantastic mains were foreground to the zing of the appetizer, a pizza bread ring of garlic, tomato and chilli sauce. Each slice of this miniature pizza delivers a zesty spark whilst producing a rich, tomato delight, guaranteed to be licking lips once the final piece is gone. Fortunately the service is second to none, and the expert chefs work with flair to prepare your next course with speed and quality. What pushes Gioberti’s to excel and achieve such well-received critique and awards is their range as an Italian restaurant. Sure they serve the aforementioned specials with a classy sheen, but if you fancy nothing more than the traditional Pizza and Pasta selections, than you will receive a dish with the same loving approach. It may seem superfluous to add, but it is evident on entry into the restaurant that great care and a professional touch have blessed the restaurant with a very fine selection of wines. hang from the ceiling in a rather extraordinary artistic fashion, and can be marvelled at before you make your own specific order. After your main course has been enjoyed and just when you believe that you could not possibly eat another bite, the dessert menu arrives. Suddenly the idea of a traditional New York Cheesecake or a Tiramisú makes perfect sense. The decision is swiftly rewarded when they arrive with a meticulously colorful presentation, the aesthetics second only to the taste. The term ‘value for money’ has become obsolete in an economy where every purchase made is undertaken with a debating process, yet at Gioberti’s with service, ambience and quality of food this exquisite, the phrase can be reinstated with ease. Tradition trumps imitation and in the grandest sense Gioberti’s is the authentic Italian dining experience. Cool and relaxed is the ambience, unique and delicately prepared is the food and value for money is the phrase. You think you can find another Italian quite like Gioberti’s? Forget about it

he S281, based on the 2010 Ford Mustang, displays a premium level of design consideration, both exterior and interior, with performance to match. It builds on the Saleen tradition of offering
limited-edition, high-performance vehicles for enthusiasts who are looking for an exhilarating driving experience, with refined driveability for real-world road conditions.
“For more than 25 years the Saleen name has stood for excellence in design, engineering, and driving dynamics,” said Mike Shields, CEO of Saleen Performance Vehicles. “The new S281 is an excellent example of what those words SCENE 79

mean when we craft concepts into real cars. Our team has done a terrific job; I’m proud of them and proud to be offering this car to our customers.” The S281’s exterior design features carefully crafted sculptural detailing, with lines and forms that flow naturally and suggest suppleness, power and agility. It features an understated yet imposing grille and front fascia, and a refined treatment of the familiar Saleen extended rear fascia and trunk lid with a simple, elegant, integrated wing. “Our goal was to create the most visually enticing American sports car ever,” said David Byron, design director at Saleen Performance Vehicles. “Ford provided the perfect launching pad with the 2010 Mustang, which allowed our team to create a car that’s world class and authentically Saleen. We painstakingly toiled over every bend and break in the body and every stitch and fold in the interior.” The S281’s 4.6-liter V8 engine is equipped with a Saleen Series VI.5 twin-screw supercharger and dual-stage intercooler. It produces 485 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque, sent to the rear wheels through a shortthrow, five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential with 3.73:1 final drive ratio. The Saleen Racecraft suspension system is new, and includes specially tuned, single-rate front and rear springs; nitrogenpressurized front struts and rear shocks with a wide range of damping adjustments; and a specially tuned front sway bar with performance pivot bushings. The interior features new, leather sport seats with Ultra-Suede inserts, highlighted by chevron-like Ultra-Suede red tabs in the seatback bolsters, and unique treatments of the gauges, steering wheel, center console and shifter. There also are contrasting Saleen logos in the door panels, and Saleen logos in the door sill plates that illuminate when the door is opened. Additional exterior highlights include unique, 20-inch, 7-spoke alloy wheels with Pirelli P-Zero Rosso high-performance tires, and Saleen S281 Supercharged fender badging.
