Karren Brady The First Lady of Football Turning around the fortunes of Birmingham City is just the tip of the iceberg; Karren is a 21st Century (Bionic) Business Woman whose very being begs the question ‘What the hell have the rest of us (men included) been doing with our time?’ Words by Nicky Kemp
“I
have a desire for independence, the need for control – or what others call sheer bloodymindedness”
Karren was just 23 years old when she took over Birmingham City Football Club. It was 1993 and the club was in administration. The buying price was £700,000. She turned a financial trading profit in her first year there and just three years later, in 1996, started to be taken seriously by the industry when the club made an overall profit for the first time in modern history. In 1997, age 27, she was responsible for the club’s flotation on the stock market, making her the youngest Managing Director of a PLC in the UK. In 2002, Birmingham City was promoted to the Premier League and Karren became the first woman to hold such a high-ranking post in the top flight of English football. In October 2009, the club was valued at over £82million - and Karren sold it. Turning around the fortunes of Birmingham City is just the tip of the iceberg; Karren is a 21st Century (Bionic) Business Woman whose very being begs the question ‘What the hell have the rest of us (men included) been doing with our time?’ Her present titles include ViceChairman of West Ham United, England 2018 Board Member, Non-Executive Director of Mothercare, Sport England, Arcadia and Syco. She is a Columnist for The Sun Newspaper and Woman & Home magazine,
18 SCENE
Author of no less than four books; two of them novels, Ambassador for the charity Wellbeing of Woman and much in demand for her motivational and public speaking. She has become a house-hold name since assuming the role of Alan Sugar’s ‘firm but fair’ aide on BBC1’s BAFTA award-winning TV Show ‘The Apprentice’ and last but by no means least, she is a Wife (quite possibly the most unlikely WAG of them all) and a Mother. In 1995, she married Canadian Footballer Paul Peschislido who played for Birmingham City for two seasons spanning 1992–1994. Living proof that it really is possible to have it all, Karren went on to have two children by him: Sophia & Paolo, now teenagers. Given Karren’s extraordinary successes in business, you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise - but she sites her family as her priority. In 2006, aged 36, she was diagnosed as having a potentially fatal brain aneurysm. She underwent neurosurgery knowing there was a 30% chance she would not survive. She says that influenced her outlook. “When times are good, it pays to get people motivated. When times are tough, you’ve GOT to get them motivated. That¹s something I can help you with.” (Karen Brady, Speaking your language - May 2011) Karren Rita Brady was born motivated on 4 April 1969 and raised in Edmonton in London, near to the
Tottenham Hotspur ground. She attended the all girls Poles Convent School in Hertfordshire from the age of 13 to 16, where she claims they had double math lessons every day, twice a day. For her A-level studies, she went on to attend the all boys Aldenham School in Elstree, which accepted girls into their sixth-form. She says this is where she gained much of her confidence in dealing with the opposite sex. Her mother Rita is Italian and she has an older brother, Darren. Her father Terry is Irish and a self-made man who earned his fortune in the printing and property industry. He was once Chairman of Swindon Town and a Director of Portsmouth too - but Karren did not use him as a stepping-stone for her career, she carved out her own way. All it took was confidence, sheer tenacity and the ability to break down barriers in a male-dominated business world. Simples. Age 18, Karren “left school on a Friday and started work the following Monday”. She was offered a place on Saatchi and Saatchi’s graduate intern programme – even though she didn’t have a degree. She admits now, to lying about that at the time. Given Saatchi and Saatchi’s infamous beginnings, of course, some might speculate that perhaps they knew the truth of it all along and employed Karren regardless - but the fact remains, they spotted her potential. She didn’t serve them long, though, just one year on she moved jobs
to work in ad sales at LBC Radio. There, she targeted publisher David Sullivan, Owner of The Daily Sport. In her first year in the job, she convinced him to spend £2million on advertising, making him LBC’s biggest client and earning herself more commission than the rest of the sales team put together. David Sullivan was so impressed by Karren, in fact, that he offered her a position working for him at Sport Newspapers Ltd. She accepted and was made a director within a year – age 20. Three years later, she spotted an article in the FT about Birmingham City FC being in receivership. She talked Sullivan into buying the club and letting her run it. Karren was once interviewed on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs and confided on air “David did warn me that I would have to be twice as good as the men to be thought of as even half as good. I said ‘Well luckily that’s not difficult!’ That was on the Friday and on the Monday, we owned the Club. Then it was head down 16 hour days, 7 days a week.” The hard work has certainly paid off. Aside from being considerably richer, Karren has been adorned with accolades. In 1995, she was voted the 98th sexiest woman in the world by FHM readers! In 2006, she was Cosmopolitan’s Woman of the Year and named in the category of ‘Woman Who Has Changed The World’ (no less!). In 2006, she attended the Queen’s lunch for Women Achievers and Business Leaders SCENE 19
and was named Business Woman of the Year in 2007. In December 2008, she won the NatWest Spirit of Everywoman Award for services to women in business. In November 2010, she was listed in the business section of the Sunday Telegraph’s ‘100 Most Powerful Women in Britain’ and in the Evening Standard’s List of ‘London’s 1000 Most Influential People 2010’. In December 2010, she was awarded an honorary doctorate in business from the University of Birmingham. In 2011, she was voted Britain’s Most Inspirational Women by Breakthrough for Breast Cancer. In 2012, her career was voted ‘most wanted’ in a survey published by MyDaily.co.uk – ahead of Meryl Streep and Hilary Clinton. She also topped a poll as ‘PA’s Dream Boss’ in a survey by Brother UK. But perhaps most significantly, Karren was awarded the prestigious fcbusiness Magazine CEO of the Year Award at The Football Business Awards in 2012 - in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the fortunes of West Ham United. New joint chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold appointed Karren Vice-Chairman of West Ham in 2010. At the time, she wrote in her newspaper column: “To West Ham fans I’ll make a single pledge - while we are on the board, we will hang in the Tower of London before your club again goes through the financial turmoil which so nearly brought it down”. True to her word, the Premier League club now operates as a profit-making business - for the first time in many years. She has helped to grow the Hammers fan base at grassroots and international level and thanks to her; the 20 SCENE
team is currently getting excited about the upcoming move to their new home ground – none other than The Olympic Stadium. Karren headed up the bid for the Hammers, triumphing over some stiff (and at times, unfair!) competition. Brady - Score! In February 2013, Karren made it onto the list of the Top Ten Inspirational Women in a poll by Oxfam, Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Power List. So what is the secret to her success? In her biography entitled: ‘Strong Woman: Ambition, Grit and a Great Pair of Heels’, which she describes as “an honest account of how to get to the top in a man’s world”, Karren lists ten motivational rules: ambition, determination, courage, charm, hard work, attitude, humor, confidence, focus and communication. Seeing as she recently expressed an interest in venturing into the world of politics, perhaps it is in our nation’s best interests that we take the time to read what she has to teach us? “I really believe in life-long learning. The minute you think you know it all is when you don’t know anything at all”, Karren points out. For any woman who wants to make it in a male-dominated business environment, it’s a no-brainer – read Karren’s biography. What are you waiting for? Men should read it too, of course – I just can’t help wondering how many will actually venture to do so? One thing’s for sure - Karren Brady, Bionic Lady – shouldn’t be under-estimated. Our First Lady of Football is still going places.

The London Marathon 2013 We’ve had the London Olympics. Now get set for the London marathon
The London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event on the planet – runners have raised over £500 million for good causes since the race began in 1981. Every mile of the Virgin London Marathon will be marked with a huge arch across the road so you won’t be able to miss them!
A
fter London’s brilliant Olympic Games in 2012, racing returns to the capital’s streets this April when the world’s best runners will battle it out over 26.2 miles to become the 2013 Virgin London Marathon champion. The race will feature the best elite men’s marathon field ever assembled and will include 11 men who’ve completed the distance in under 2:06, as well as all three medallists from the London 2012 Olympic Marathon and the winners of the 2012 Berlin, Chicago, London, Frankfurt and Dubai Marathons. Virgin London Marathon race director Hugh Brasher said: “We’re delighted to welcome all three medallists from the London 2012 Olympic Marathon to this year’s Virgin London Marathon. The Olympic stars will line up alongside the world’s best distance runners in what promises to be a remarkable battle between the strongest men’s field ever assembled for a marathon.” This year the race route will be going around the newly restored Cutty Sark. There will be good spectator viewing points in Cutty Sark Gardens although access will be restricted on the east side. Please follow the directions of the event marshals. The Greenwich Foot Tunnel (with new lifts) will be open and the Tunnel will have a one way (south to north) flow for two hours

between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm to allow Marathon spectators to cross to the north side of the route. A queuing system will operate at the Tunnel entrance on the Greenwich side. There will be special areas to meet up with friends and family at Horse Guards Road and Horse Guards Parade. These areas will be clearly signposted and divided up alphabetically so your group can arrange to meet at the first letter of your surname. Overseas runners and their relatives will be directed to a separate meeting area in the Mall. It’s best not to rely on your mobile phone to meet up with others on race day. There will be thousands of people using their phones in the area, so mobile networks will be busy and you may not get a signal. It’s also a good idea to have a contact friend or family member at home so you can call them and pass on messages. Although there are regular loud speaker announcements on race day, these aren’t used to communicate with lost friends and family.
Staying hydrated Remember to drink lots of water even if your not racing, It is important to stay hydrated in the busy crowds as it will get very hot in the sun and make sure to wear a hat and suntan lotion in the sun to avoid heatstroke. Meeting up with runners, friends and family before and after the Marathon. Arrange two locations to meet up, before heading out in the morning.
When you cross the finish line: • Your timing tag will be removed and your official race time will be recorded. • You’ll be given your medal for successfully completing the 2013 Virgin London Marathon, and a goody bag containing a finisher’s t-shirt, foil blanket, food and drink. • Our medical team and members of the St John Ambulance will be near the finish to offer medical help if you need it. • You should then make your way to the baggage trucks to collect your kit bag. You’ll need to show your runner number to collect your bag. • Please don’t wait around at the finish area – thousands of runners will need to pass through as smoothly as possible. If it’s raining you’ll be able to shelter and get changed at the Waterloo Place underground car park, which will be clearly signposted • And have fun at the 2013 London marathon.
The first location At the start of the Marathon meet your family and friends in a prearranged location so you can cheer together. The second location Will be for after the Marathon this is where you will meet your Runner. This location can also be used if anyone becomes lost in the large crowds.

pring Into Healthy Eating! As the seasons change and we look forward to lighter evenings and some long overdue warmth, it is a great time to think about introducing a healthier approach to our diet. Food is fuel, and the saying “You are what you eat” is absolutely correct: how can you expect your body to stay in optimum health if you fill it with rubbish food, toxins and chemicals? The following is a really popular recipe that I shared with my students last year, and who have fed back to me that their whole families are enjoying together.
decanted olive oil into a bottle that sprays so that I can very sparingly coat the chips with oil. They will also take around 20 minutes (depending on size) to cook.
Spring Recipe - Healthy Fish and Chips Place a salmon steak for everyone who is joining you for dinner in an ovenproof dish. Add a few drops of Tamari sauce (soy sauce if you don’t have Tamari) and some mixed herbs to the top of each salmon steak. Oven bake at 150 for 25 minutes.
Spring Smoothie Smoothies are so easy to make at home and are super healthy! Fast food strawberry milkshakes are loaded with sugar and additives, so why not get into the habit of making your own?
Wash but don’t peel one sweet potato for each dinner guest. Cut the sweet potatoes into ‘chips’, and place on a baking tray. The smaller you cut the potatoes the quicker they will take to cook. I have
We love green veggies in our household and lightly steam peas, broccoli and spinach for this meal. Steaming is the most desirable way of cooking vegetables as they will hold their nutrients –make sure you don’t over cook them as you want to maintain the goodness. Enjoy!
Bananas and mangoes make brilliant bases for your smoothie and you can add strawberries, blueberries or any berries to give it a fabulous flavour and colour. Try adding some spinach and cucumber too for added vitamins. Instead of using milk I add coconut water which can be purchased at all leading supermarkets and is an excellent source of electrolytes. Don’t add any sugar!!! If your smoothie is not sweet enough add a tiny amount of honey or even better stevia –both much better for you. Yummy! Visit the website or email me for more recipes, advice and information. April Showers Out with the old and in with the New. Make a difference to your morning shower this spring Showers are an essential fixture in any bathroom, especially for busy professionals who need a speedy way of getting spruced up for the office in the morning. But why not get creative? With so many different styles and functions showers offer so much more than just a speedy wash
S
howers come in such a vast array of designs and functions that it can be confusing knowing which one to choose. The best way is to take your personality and lifestyle into consideration, and find a shower that matches those. Showers for the Busy Executive As a busy executive, your blackberry is full of appointments to the point where you barely have time to sit down and eat, let alone wallow in a long bath.
Shower Types The different types of showers available. Showers with a Sauna The latest bathroom trend is to install a Swedish-style all-inone shower with in-built sauna and steam bath.
Speed is of the essence for you when it comes to showers, and expense isn’t an issue. What you need to look for is a high-powered shower with multiple massage jets that will instantly wet every part of your body, wake you up after a late night entertaining corporate guests, and ease out those aching shoulder muscles after being hunched over your desk too long. These showers can be found in stylish, minimalist designs that will perfectly suit your slate or black-tiled shower. Showers for the Single Mum Practicality is the keyword for the single mum’s shower. You don’t want anything fancy that will take too long to figure out, or that the kids will break. So opt for a nice basic shower design with a thermostat mixer to prevent 36 SCENE
Showers with Jets Separate body jets spray you simultaneously, via special piping arranged around the shower walls that will get every inch of your body wet all at once.
Waterfall Showers Waterfall showers typically produce 10 to 20 times more water flow than a standard shower, creating a powerful massaging effect.
the little ones getting accidentally scalded. You might want to find a showerhead with different spray options, so when you’re tense and tired, you can get a mini-massage. Showers for Wags You live for luxury, and enjoy nothing more than spending time beautifying yourself in the bathroom. In your case, nothing less than the best will do, especially as you are so used to the fancy showers at your posh gym and day spa. Treat yourself with a Trevi Zena shower in green glass for ultimate style. This has six steam jets, an overhead drench shower head, and an elegant hand spray with hose. Showers for the Bachelor You’ve made your money and now you want to enjoy it – preferably with a beautiful woman on your arm. You’re conscious that in order to impress the ladies, you need to look young and healthy to compete with the other eligible bachelors. An all-in-one shower with sauna and steam room is perfect for you, especially in a sophisticated Finnish wood style. The sauna and steam room functions will give you the health benefits associated with sweating out toxins, along with the added bonus of it keeping your skin looking young and fresh. Showers with Coloured Water An LED light attached to your shower head glows when the water pressure begins, changing colour to match the temperature of the water. So if you are still half-asleep, you won’t get scalded with boiling hot water as the light will be glowing red.
You’ll be fighting them off before you know it! Showers for the Technology Geek You love nothing more than snapping up the latest hitech something-or-other for your home. When it comes to showers, you’re spoilt for choice. A digital remote control system is a must, as is a CD/ Radio/Telephone speaker system that works inside the shower. You’ll also love the LED light attachment for shower heads, which turns water different colours according to temperature. Showers With a Digital Remote Control The new breed of digital showers come with a remote control meaning you can adjust your shower from any place in the house, so the water will be at the perfect temperature and flow rate by the time you’ve crawled out of bed

Wine & Dine Recipe of the month Traditional hot cross buns Make a well in the centre of the mixture, then add the sugar and lemon zest and yeast. Beat the egg and add to the flour with the tepid milk. Mix together to a form a soft, pliable dough. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Carefully work the mixed dried fruit into the dough until well combined. Knead lightly for 5 minutes. Grease a large, warm mixing bowl. Shape the dough into a ball and place it into the prepared bowl. Then cover with a clean tea towel and set aside in a warm place for one hour Turn out the proved dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knock back the dough. Shape it into a ball again and return it to the bowl, then cover again with the tea towel and set aside for 30 minutes to rise. Divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten slightly into a bun shape using the palms of your hands. Ingredients 625g/1.3lb strong white flour, plus extra for dusting 1 tsp salt 2 tsp ground mixed spice 45g/ 1.5 oz unsalted butter, cut into cubes, plus extra for greasing 85g/3oz sugar 1 lemon, zest only 1½ tsp fast-action yeast 1 free-range egg 275ml/10fl oz tepid milk 125g/4oz mixed dried fruit For the topping 2 tbsp plain flour Vegetable oil, for greasing 1 tbsp golden syrup, gently heated, for glazing Method: For the buns, sieve the flour, salt and ground mixed spice into a large mixing bowl, then rub in the butter using your fingertips.
Cover the buns again with the tea towel and set aside to rest for 5-10 minutes. Transfer the buns to the tray. Wrap the tray with the buns on it loosely in greaseproof paper. Preheat the oven to 240C/475F/Gas 8. Meanwhile, for the topping, mix the plain flour to a smooth paste with 2 tablespoons of cold water. When the buns have risen, remove the polythene bag and the greaseproof paper. Spoon the flour mixture into a piping bag and pipe a cross on each bun. Transfer the buns to the oven and bake for 8-12 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. As soon as you remove the buns from the oven, brush them with the hot golden syrup, then set aside to cool on a wire rack. Arrange and serve on a white plate with butter.

City Breaks With a long winter behind you and pay-check or two in the bank, it’s time for a well-earned break.
Exciting new destinations are emerging all the time, and the sheer number of options can be bewildering. Below is a selection of top city breaks for 2013, combining the places everyone’s talking about with some little-known gems.
G
etting away can be a bit of a big deal. Most of us have been on the big summer 2 week holiday at some point in our lives. However more people are choosing to turn to the short stay city breaks as an alternative option when it comes to getting away from it all. After a bumpy ride in the economy for the last few years most surveys of holidaymakers suggest that, however bad the economy gets, we are loath to give up our summer holiday, but there is no doubt that many of us are being much more cautious when it comes to booking a short break. We see ‘holiday’ as one of those expenses that finds its way under the category of “discretionary spending”, and it has an air of extravagance about it at a time when most of us are watching our budgets carefully. The short break, though, is one of the great pleasures of travel – the two or three-night escape that combines a dose of culture, a couple of decent meals and the discovery of somewhere new with an escape from routine.
46 SCENE
7 of the best city breaks that won’t break the bank Need to escape for a few days? City breaks are an ideal way to escape at the weekend and midweek to Europe and all over the world. Reykjavik, Iceland With several budget carriers now offering services to the Icelandic capital, visiting the Reykjavik Arts Festival (listahatid.is) has rarely been more affordable. Held from 17 May-2 June , the event takes over virtually all the city’s museums, galleries and performances spaces to present an eclectic mix of art forms. Antwerp, Belgium This is living in a box, but not a cardboard box: the Sleeping Around (sleepingaround.eu) pop-up concept hotel is currently causing a stir in Antwerp. A night in one of the luxurious bedrooms created in each of its four 20ft sea containers starts from £121. The locations may change.
If you plan your trip and choose your destination carefully, there is a lot that can be done to make it more affordable, Here are some strategies for booking a short break without breaking the bank. Choose which destination is going to offer you best value but remember to check exchange rates and average meal costs of your destination before you book as you’re inexpensive break can rack up pretty quickly if you don’t do your Research. A recent report by the Post Office revealed sharp differences from country to country in day-to-day costs for travellers but It is the combination of the price of your hotel and your travel costs that will make the biggest difference to the overall amount you have to pay for the holiday.
Dubai A new route from Turkish airline Pegasus (flypgs.com) now offers return flights to Dubai, via Istanbul, from £270. Meanwhile, in the Emirate itself, the metro system, which is slowly approaching completion, has made getting around cheaper than ever before, while hotels continue to offer discounts in the hopes of tourist numbers rebounding. The newly opened five-star Meliã hotel (melia-dubai.com) has rooms from less than £100 a night. New York Visit New York on a city break and be surprised at how much you can see and do on a whistle-stop tour of one of America’s most vibrant cities. See world-famous sights, shop ‘til you drop and dine in style, all in a weekend. On trips to New York be sure to take in world-famous sights like the majestic Statue of Liberty and iconic Empire State Building. Culture vultures should head to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or take in a Broadway show. Shop at trendy Soho boutiques or Fifth Avenue megastores and groove to live jazz in Greenwich Village.
Sparta, Greece There may not be much that resembles Zack Snyder’s wild visions in the movie 300, but a series of excellent museums (odysseus.culture.gr) detail Sparta’s fascinating history. Doubles at the Maniatis Hotel (maniatishotel.gr) in the modern city of Sparti cost from £73.
Istanbul, Turkey Home to some of the world’s greatest ski areas, the spectacular peaks and high altitude ski resorts in France offer some of the best destinations for snow reliability. From traditional villages to purpose-built resorts, tree-lined runs to snow-sure glaciers - France ski resorts offer something for everyone.
Barcelona, Spain With the opening of a new stretch of high-speed line next week, between Figueres and Barcelona, it will soon be possible to take the train from London in the morning, connect in Paris then get to the Catalan capital in plenty of time for dinner.

The F-TYPE is a continuation of a sporting bloodline that stretches back more than 75 years and encompasses some of the most beautiful, thrilling and desirable sports cars ever built. Joining the XK convertible and coupé models, the new F-TYPE provides Jaguar with a broader line of sports and GT models. The 2013 Jaguar F-TYPE combines low vehicle weight, high power and superb aerodynamics to achieve a pure sports car experience, yet with Jaguar elegance and luxury. A true two-seat sports car, the all-new Jaguar F-TYPE is equipped with a modern, lightweight soft top that,

when lowered, serves as its own tonneau cover. This not only provides a weight savings, but also improves packaging and contributes to the car’s low center of gravity for greater agility. The top can be fully raised or lowered in just 12 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph. Its multi-layer construction includes a Thinsulate® lining for optimal thermal and soundinsulating properties. Jaguar cars have always defined sinuous, muscular elegance, and the F-TYPE continues and advances this tradition with new, assertive design language. Two “heartlines” define, in just two bold strokes, both the profile and top-down view of the F-TYPE. The main “heartline” theme begins in the blade dissecting the shark-like gills on either side of the grille. This first heartline runs up and forms the sharp top crease of the fender line, which provides sight lines that aid the
driver in cornering manoeuvres. It leads the eye along the top of the front fender, which is emphasized by the headlamp design, and then into the door and toward the rear of the car where it gracefully disappears. This sweeping line is mirrored by the feature line that runs back from the side vent. Along with ”lightcatcher” surface detailing above the sill, the line instills a sense of speed to the car. The lightcatcher surface detailing also allows the door surface to wrap around the side of the car, creating a fuselage effect. The second “heartline” swells out to form the muscular rear haunch before sweeping dramatically around the rear of the car. The clean, sleek lines of the tail are made possible in part by the inclusion of an active rear spoiler that deploys at speed to reduce aerodynamic lift. The spoiler rises when the F-TYPE reaches 60 mph and then lowers to fit flush when the speed drops below 40 mph. Further discreet aerodynamic aids include a front splitter and a sculpted rear valance. The headlights run vertically rather than horizontally, which leads the eye naturally up and along the fender crease. Technology has facilitated the design language of the F-TYPE; the compact xenon unit requires just one projector, while the J-Blade LED running lights further emphasize the design of the heartline running through the lamp. The grille leans slightly forward to create a suggestion of motion when the car is stationary. The lower edge of the clamshell hood forms the top of the side vent. The mesh in the grille and side vents is a hexagonal design that gives greater form and depth. The basic F-Type has a starting price tag of £58,500. A reasonable sum for a lot of car. However for the real power and driver experience the F-Type V8 S has a slightly higher starting price of £79,950. SCENE 49
