David Walliams
Funny and Flirty – But He’s No Lady! Comedian, Writer, Actor, Children’s Author and Fund-raising Extraordinaire David Walliams joined the judging panel of Britain’s Got Talent in 2012. On 14 February this year, he tweeted: “Happy Valentines Day my @Simon Cowell. I don’t want to hurt you anymore, I just want to love you… Your David” followed by lots of kisses. Cheeky! Words by Nicky Kemp
W
alliams was born David Edward Williams in Surrey in 1971 to his father, a London Transport engineer and Mother, a lab technician. As a child, his sister used to dress him up in an old bridesmaid’s dress and he was nicknamed Daphne and bullied at school for being effeminate. He was a member of the National Youth Theatre where, aged 18, he met his future comedy partner Matt Lucas. Williams went on to study drama at the University of Bristol 1989–92, hot on the heels of Simon Pegg who was in the year above him. His first job after leaving university was writing for The Ant and Dec Show, which aired on CBBC 1995-97. His name change came about when he joined the actors’ trade union Equity and discovered there was already a David Williams. His first on-screen performance was as Lesley Luncheonmeat on Sky 1’s entertainment video games show, Games World in 1993. Walliams is most famously associated with Lucas and their two-time BAFTA and British Comedy Awardwinning TV sketch show Little Britain, which first aired on the BBC in 2003. Who amongst us can claim they have never uttered one or more of the shows indelible catch phrases during the past decade? (Yeah but, no but… I want that one… I’m a Lady… Computer Says No!) They produced three series over the next few years and star-studded specials and spin offs followed including Little Britain Abroad, a live tour and HBO’s Little Britain USA - but the duo’s fame wasn’t earned overnight. Walliams and Lucas first partnered up in 1996 for Paramount Comedy 1’s Mash and Peas, a sketch show
18 SCENE
made up of parodies of various television genres, which led to the video of the Fat Les Song ‘Vindaloo’ – the unofficial anthem for the England national football team at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Then there was Rock Profile, which appeared on channel UK Play in 1999 before moving to BBC2 in 2000. The show was a series of spoof interviews by Jamie Theakston, with Walliams and Lucas (the interviewees) playing the characters of famous musicians. They even starred in an episode of Plunkett & Maclean together - and Walliams toiled on solo projects too. In 1998 he wrote and starred in Barking, a late night sketch show on Channel 4 featuring the then unknown Catherine Tate, Peter Kay and Mackenzie Crook (aka Gareth Keenan in The Office). He also appeared in a series of Dr Who parodies and the Doctor Who audio drama Phantasmagoria (1999), had a cameo role in Simon Pegg’s Spaced as Vulva; a self-proclaimed artist of impressionism (1999), played a customer in Blackbooks (2000), starred in an Eastenders Christmas special (2003) and Agatha Christie’s Marple (2004), to name a few! But since the rip-roaring success of Little Britain, the duo has not looked back. The first episode of their latest series Come Fly With Me aired on BBC1 on Christmas day in 2010. It was the third most watched programme that day and the most-watched comedy of the year. David returned to non-comedy television in 2007, receiving excellent reviews for his portrayal of a suave and dangerous manipulator in Stephen Poliakoff’s Capturing Mary. He was also cast as the ghost of Prince Sextus in the 2007 British romance fantasy film Stardust, featuring an ensemble cast including Michelle
Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais and Robert De Niro. In 2010, he hit the Hollywood Big Time, staring in screwball comedy Dinner for Schmucks alongside Steve Carell and Paul Rudd and in 2011 he sealed his British icon status, playing mole-like alien Gibbis in the sixth series of Dr Who. In 2006, however, Walliams did something completely different. He undertook nine months of rigorous training with former Olympic modern pentathlete Greg Whyte in order to swim the English Channel to raise money for Sport Relief. He had to balance a rigorous training programme with the Little Britain live tour. He had to swim through shoals of jellyfish, battle his way through seaweed and sewage and cope with water temperatures as low as 15C. It took him 10 hours, 34 minutes to swim the 35km - equivalent to 700 lengths of an Olympic swimming pool. Fewer than ten percent of people who have attempted the swim have succeeded. In the preceding years, Walliams had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He admitted periods of intense self-loathing, suffered a mental breakdown and had insomnia for nine months until he sought professional help. He described his 2006 channel swim as “some sort of redemption”. He raised over £1million and on 6 November 2006, was awarded The Mirror’s Pride of Britain Award for The Most Influential Public
Figure. Quite an achievement - but that was just the start of such things. In 2008, Walliams joined Olympic Hero James Cracknell on the final leg of his attempt to row, cycle and swim from Britain to Africa in seven days – again in aid of Sport Relief. He joked “I’m jumping in at the end to get some of the glory” but the 14 mile swim across the Strait of Gibralter to Morocco (raising £350k) was no picnic. It was a shorter distance than the Channel but the waters are rougher, colder – and shark infested! Then, in 2010, there was the Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride - 1000 Miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End. Walliams led the celebrity non-stop cycle relay team, made up of Jimmy Carr, Fearne Cotton, Miranda Hart, Patrick Kielty, Davina McCall and Russell Howard. Together, they raised over a million pounds. In September 2011 David embarked on his biggest challenge yet – a 140mile swim along the length of the River Thames. Overweight as a teenager, he never really embraced sport but he told the Guardian “I am built for swimming, I am tall, I have long arms, big feet, big hands and, of course (queue that seductive wry twinkle), a huge rudder!” He trained with Whyte again and completed the challenge in just eight days, coping with unusually cold, windy and rainy SCENE 19
conditions, enduring a serious stomach upset and severe exhaustion (though he did muster the energy to rescue a drowning Labrador en route!). 111,118 strokes and 68,044 burned calories later, Walliams had raised yet another 1million, two-hundred-thousand pounds for Sport Relief. In January 2012, he was awarded The Landmark Achievement Award for his television career and achievements for Sport Relief. Goodness knows when he found the time to write but in November 2008, David’s first Children’s book aimed at readers age 8-12, The Boy In The Dress, was released world-wide. Illustrated by Quentin Blake, it is the story of a 12 year-old boy named Dennis who enjoys cross-dressing and the reactions of his family and friends. The reviewers naturally drew parallels with Walliam’s own life and cross-dressing tendencies. The Guardian praised his “novel, light-hearted approach to transgender themes” and Nicolette Jones in The Times commented “Walliams writing is not the finest, but everyone is on the side of freedom and tolerance by the end, for which the book must be applauded’’. Then came Mr Stink in 2009, David’s second book, again illustrated by Quentin Blake. It is the story of a 12 year-old girl Chloe who meets a tramp and helps to look after him – despite being forbidden to speak to ‘soap-dodgers’ by her mother! The book was awarded the Children’s Award in the inaugural People’s Book Prize in 2010. The Times said of this one: “A delight… a new Roald Dahl” and it went on to be made into a one-off TV show, that aired on BBC1 in December 2012. Billionaire Boy, Walliam’s third children’s book was published in October 2010, illustrated by Tony Ross. It tells the story of Joe Spud, the richest 12 year old boy in the world who has everything he could ever 20 SCENE
dream of including a thousand pairs of trainers, his very own F1 racing car and even an orang-utan for a butler – but the thing he is lacking and needs most, is a friend. Gangsta Granny, his fourth book followed in 2011, again illustrated by Ross, telling the story of Ben who is bored when he stays at his Grandmas house because all she wants to do is play board games and eat cabbage soup – until that is, he discovers she used to be an international jewel thief and is plotting to steal the crown jewels! Ratburger – Walliams fifth book was released September last year, telling the story of young Zoe – who has a lot of things to feel unhappy about. It netted David the National Book Awards ‘Children’s Book of the Year’ Award. Oh – and his autobiography – Camp David - was also published in hard-back and as an e-book in October last year. Whatever will Walliams turn his hand to next? There is a lot of twittering about the upcoming Comic Relief and Red Nose Day on 15 March – but perhaps following that, his energies will be re-directed towards his personal life? Walliams married Lara Stone, the Dutch model in London’s Claridges’s Hotel in May 2010 and in December 2012, the couple announced they were pregnant with their first child due in mid 2013. Congratulations David - What an amazing role model you will make. We can only keep our fingers crossed that the sleep deprivation you are soon to endure, doesn’t detract from that seductive wry twinkle of yours – and for Lara’s sake, that you don’t insist on swapping places with your baby too often… Bitty!

Get Smooth Glowing Skin Want to know how to get glowing skin? It’s all about exfoliation
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin radiant and smooth. Whether it’s bikini season or you just want soft, clean skin, exfoliating from head to toe will get you glowing.
E
xfoliation is important for healthy skin, but many people get hooked on the idea of scrubbing their way to radiance and end up exfoliating far too often. For the best results, you should plan to exfoliate just once or twice a week at most. Keep a close eye on your skin and only reach for your exfoliating products when your face seems particularly dull. When you use the right exfoliating products in reasonable moderation, you can get great results. Exfoliating products are designed to remove dead skin cells from your face. They do this in a number of ways. In order to choose the right exfoliating products for your skin, you need to understand how various options work. Not all products are created equal, and one may work well for you, but be a very bad choice for your friend. It all comes down to your individual needs and skin type. Scrubs are the harshest type of exfoliator. They use small rough particles to physically rub away dead skin cells. The roughest options use ground seeds. Smoother choices may have finely ground rice or smooth exfoliating beads in them. Most dermatologists recommend using gentler scrubs. Those with large pieces of grain or seeds in them can actually harm your delicate facial skin by scratching it. In extreme cases,

they may even cause the skin to bleed. Soft exfoliating beads are a much safer choice. Scrubs are best for individuals with oily skin. They’ll help get tough dirt, makeup, oil, and dead skin cells out of your pores. If you have more sensitive skin, you’ll need exfoliating products that will protect it rather than rub it raw. Look for exfoliators that use enzymes to get the job done. Papaya and pineapple are popular enzymes which work as natural exfoliators. These exfoliating products will dissolve dead skin cells instead of rubbing them away. Even the most sensitive skin types can usually handle this level of exfoliation. Exfoliation products with chemicals are best for individuals with dry skin. These products typically use alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) to pull dirt and dead skin cells away from your face. The AHAs will work their way deep into your skin for a fresh clean feeling that goes beyond the surface of your face. Chemical exfoliators are best for individuals with dry skin. They have the added benefit of minimizing wrinkles and fine lines, and are a good choice for adults and older individuals rather than teens.
Clinique Exfoliating Scrub 100ml Skin-clearing, water-based scrub for strong, oily skins. Skin looks translucent, clearer, brighter. Gives a light reflecting glow to mature skin. Promotes a more even skin tone and refines texture. Rinses off easily and leaves the skin clean and refreshed. Available from Clinique, £17.50
Finding the right exfoliating products for your face can be tricky. You may need to try more than one option before settling on the best choice for your own skin type. If a product irritates your skin, you should stop using it immediately. Pain isn’t a sign that the scrub is working. It’s simply a sign that you’re damaging your delicate skin. If your product leaves you with a fresh feeling and a clean, glowing face, then you may have a winner. If you’re not getting the level of exfoliation that you want with over the counter products, talk to your dermatologist about other options.
Sanctuary Radiance Exfoliator 100ml Ultra-fine apricot granules and grape seed exfoliate and refine, while a trio of pumpkin, pineapple and papaya extracts work naturally to help increase cell renewal. Skin is left feeling smooth and glowing with radiance. Available Sanctuary Spa, £10.50

ow Meditation can change your life! Ask yourself these questions now: • Do you feel out of control? • Are you unhappy? Are you stressed out? Do you have a busy mind? Do you suffer with pain? Do you lack energy? Are you overweight? Are you trying to have a baby?
• • • • • •
If you answered yes to any of the above questions then meditation could be for you. The brain is like any other muscle in the body and needs to be exercised. In meditation we become aware of every second during the allotted time, and bring our attention back to the present moment. This action strengthens the brain muscle and trains the mind. And just like anything else in life the more you practice the better you get, and you will start to see changes in every part of your life. You become happier, more focused, healthier and more in control of your life. All you need to do is set aside 5 minutes every day, ideally at the same time each day, in a

Psychic & sPiritualist “The only thing you can change about the past is how you feel. By making the right connection, you can understand where you have come from and how you can shape your journey to a better future.” George has performed readings for royalty, celebrities and entrepreneurs from all over the world, who have been astounded and empowered by their experience, as the experience is a combination of Spiritual guidance, ancient healing, and psychic insight, George will perform one to one or telephone readings. I was born in London Hospital in 1970 and was raised in East London, so I am an “East ender”; my Mum established a good reputation as a spiritualist, she was a specialist in palm, tea leaves and Tarot readings, it was a family tradition since the late 1800’s. Our house always had a spiritual energy flowing with incense, candles and readings were happening everyday. At 12 years old, I would practise 3 card Tarot readings with clients who were waiting there turn to see my Mother. I also developed a passion for music, my Father was a musician and I started to play drums at Greek weddings and parties from the age of 13. When I turned 17 I worked in the Greek Taverna “plate smashing scene”, I had an opportunity to practice my music and also my readings for different people. I became very popular with my readings and people would come back, not to smash plates but to have a reading.
On my 21st Birthday I launched on exclusive west London night clubs as a clairvoyant where I would read for celebrities, VIP’s and many other interesting people. In 1997 I had a serious operation. This created a crisis in my life where I had to draw deeply on my spiritual resources. I came through this fire committed to sharing my insights and had to work from home giving online readings during recovery. I was able to support an increasing number of people through their own journeys by using the spiritual knowledge that ran richly through my family’s history. The need for this operation and my subsequent journey of self-discovery also inspired me to focus on healing techniques. I rekindled an ancient colour therapy to enable aura, chakra balance and self connection. These techniques helped me to swiftly heal psychologically and physically, changing my life for the better. I now apply what I have learned from this experience to help others. Many people have been astounded with the results achieved. Although readings are important; spiritual guidance and self connection are essential! To become a practising psychic and a spiritualist is a responsibility that will take many years of dedication. For me it is has become a way of life.

Be Bold In The Kitchen Gloss and colours are this season’s big design statement
If you think it’s about time you gave your kitchen a facelift, then this year it is all about a modern contemporary look. Glamorous gloss units and bold colours are guaranteed to put the light and life back into a kitchen you will want to show off.
M
odern and contemporary is the current kitchen must have. Sleek and glossy kitchens create the feeling of space whilst clever lighting can highlight feature like islands and breakfast tables. Want to maximize the light in your kitchen? Choose units with a reflective surface they’ll heighten the feeling of space too. Putting high gloss units into a kitchen that could be bigger will throw light around the room, visually stretching the space. A slim island will provide a useful dining room, without interrupting the open feeling. The unit doors, of your cabinets don’t have to match in colour - although it works best if they are of the same construction style. To create interest, choose one neutral colour and one bold and place them in a balanced layout. When it comes to unit fashion handles are in the past – have no handles on show, and a work surface that blends invisibly with the splash back. You’re talking super smooth and contemporary when choosing worktops or splash backs, go for a finish you might not usually see, Instead of a tiled splash back, why not think glass? You can have it cut to size and in just about any colour you want and no handles at all will

give your kitchen a great streamlined look, and handle-less units are also practical in a room that’s a thoroughfare to the garden. Pendant lights are all the rage and if you are installing them over a kitchen island or table, go for odd numbers as they work better than even numbers. When light is an issue in a newly built extension, consider installing a series of skylights to let the sun flood in and fill the space with natural light, to enhance natural light choose a light colour palette, as dark colours will darken the room. A bold colour can transform a plain kitchen at minimal cost you can pick out a colour from the living area and bring it into your kitchen bold colours will make your kitchen stand out from the rest. Don’t over do the colour though, when you go bold the secret is to use two-tone colouring. Always have a neutral light hue to break up the bold statement colours. In a large space, go to town with the layout, creating curves with a c-shaped kitchen island. Ergonomic to work in, it also adds interest in an otherwise angular space, Curves are in right now for kitchens and with a solid surface material like Corian, you can create a sweeping curved work surface. In an open plan space or a large kitchen. They can be used for practically everything, from chopping veg on the granite top to cooking on the built-in hob and washing up in the integral sink. The New Cayenne Porsche’s Heavyweight is a knockout The Porsche Cayenne range is now expanded to include a Turbo S model with 550 hp, an increase of 50 hp from the Cayenne Turbo. These technologies allow it to surpass the driving performance of many sports cars, while preserving the off-road capability, ride comfort and towing ability typical of the Cayenne.

n addition to an increase of 50 horsepower compared to the Cayenne Turbo, the Cayenne Turbo S also benefits from increased engine torque, which is boosted from 516 to 553 poundfeet. This translates into faster acceleration and a higher top speed. The sprint from zero to 60 mph now takes just 4.3 seconds (-0.1 seconds), and the Cayenne Turbo S accelerates to a top track speed of 175 mph (+ 3 mph). The Cayenne Turbo S is equipped for maximum dynamic performance. Accordingly, it incorporates chassis and drivetrain technologies which are optional on the Cayenne Turbo. More specifically, Porsche

PTV Plus adds torque vectoring at the rear wheels together with an electronically controlled rear differential lock, which improves traction and therefore offers more agility in a wide range of driving situations. The new Cayenne Turbo S is also equipped with the Sport Chrono package as standard, which includes an analog and digital timer located at the center of
the dashboard. The performance display informs the occupants about the total driving time, lap distance covered so far and individual lap times. It also shows latitudinal and longitudinal acceleration via the TFT display in the instrument cluster. The exterior of the Cayenne Turbo S lives up to the high standards of a top model. The front air intakes and rear view mirror trim are painted in high-gloss black. The standard 21-inch 911 Turbo II wheels with coloured Porsche badges are exclusively tailored for the Cayenne Turbo S; their inside surfaces are painted in high-gloss black. The wheel arch extensions and rear spoiler separation edge are painted in exterior colour. The model also features dual twin-tube sport tailpipes in polished Aluminium. Porsche designers created an exclusive two-tone leather interior package that is available in either Black/ Carrera Red or Black/Luxor Beige combinations. They feature an exclusive combination of contrasting colours and pieces that are further accented by deviated stitching throughout. Front and rear seats feature the Porsche Crest embossed on the headrests while the roof is covered in Alcantara® from front to rear.
