Style... The Tikadi Teen Club has been launched in response to Essex teens being more involved in their own image and identity. With shows like ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ and fashion culture now evolving outside of London and our very own ‘Essex Fashion Week’ attracting bigger crowds each year, it is not unusual for teenagers to experiment with their looks, including cuts and colour, and that can be an expensive bill for our younger fashionistas. Michael at Tikadi and his team now have evolved a society of teens all part of the Tikadi Team Club! They enjoy their own price menu – keeping prices keen, and discounted for the members, hairdressing provided by the familiar Tikadi team, as well as discounts on hair styling products. Could it actually get much better? ‘Your hair is our passion’ is the Tikadi moto for a reason so Teen Club members enjoy competitions, and very shortly the first Teen Club event. All members are presented with their very own membership card.

MULTI AWARD WINNING ELECTRICAL SUPERSTORE RGB WINS PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL IER AWARD 2011 AS THE ILFORD/LOUGHTON STORE IS NAMED BEST LARGE CONSUMER ELECTRONICS & DOMESTIC APPLIANCES RETAILER OF THE YEAR, RGB ADDS ANOTHER AWARD TO ITS NUMEROUS ACCOLADES. Multi awarding winning Essex based company RGB was invited to attend the prestigious 2011 Independent Business Awards on the 23rd June, held at the Forest Of Arden Hotel in Birmingham. The event was hosted by special guest Ian Moore. Jason and Dennis Digwa attended the evening where over 250 of the most Premium Electrical Retailers were selected. Thousands of entries nationwide were filtered down to four finalists. Excitement was in the air to see who had won the most prestigious award of the night for the independent sector, as Samsung General Manager Colin Rodgers revealed that RGB Hi-Fi & Video had won the award and presented the trophy to Jason and Dennis Digwa. RGB fought off stiff competition to win the “Best Large Consumer Electronics & Domestics Retailer 2011”. “It is extremely pleasing to see what we are so passionate about, being rewarded by our industry” said Dennis Digwa. Many retailers approached the Essex Boy’s Jason and Dennis Digwa to ask them what is your secret to success? “As my father Peter Digwa always said to me, hard work and determination always will prevail you to being successful. “At RGB we work as a team and I would like to thank all our staff members, as without them this award would not be possible” said Jason Digwa The Coveted IER award, described by RGB director Dennis Digwa as the “Oscar of the Electrical Retail Industry” was a great achievement for RGB and shows by continually investing in their stores and customer service, it has paid off. After winning the AAA Award 2010/11 and ERT Award 2010/11 RGB now added the IER (Independent Electrical retailer) award 2011 to their collection of awards within the last year. The award covered both Consumer Electronics such as LCD & LED Panels, Digital Cameras, home Cinema Systems
and Domestic appliances such as Fridge freezers and washing machines. This was the first award RGB have won for their House Hold Appliances which stocks all the latest Washing machines, Dryers and fridge freezers. The family oriented business prides itself on great service and amazing offers in the field of electrical retail for over two decades. These qualities have seen the business expand, increasing its turnover four fold over since 2000 and now winning another national recognition of the highest form. RGB’s buying power allows them to market exclusive deals which other Electrical retailers cannot offer. “Our commitment is based on two long-term objectives that shape everything we do here at RGB: Delivering an outstanding service that meets the needs to our customers and delivering exceptional value. The showroom was designed with the customer’s ease of purchasing in mind, boasting a dedicated Demo Room, numerous lifestyle interactive zones and fully operational products on display. All staff are manufacture trained, therefore having the abilities to showcasing the full features and benefits of all the available products. “We wanted to create an electrical store that would stand out from the crowd. A store that would personify what a true customer experience is all about. We hope our store shows that we are not afraid to invest in what we truly believe in” Jason Digwa, Director. SCENE 25

ESSEX POLO Words by Luke Harman
Photography by James Green
WIDELY REGARDED AS THE EVENT OF THE YEAR IN CERTAIN SOCIAL CIRCLES, SCENE MAGAZINE SPENT THE DAY RUBBING SHOULDERS WITH THE STARS AT THE SIXTH ANNUAL DUKE OF ESSEX POLO TROPHY.
O
n a day that threatened to be ruined by ominous looking cloud patterns hovering overhead, the crowds poured through the gates in defiant mood and were suitably rewarded as the rain held off and patches of brilliant sunshine escaped through the grey to brighten the afternoon. Set within the sprawling grounds of the Gaynes Park Estate in Epping, Essex Polo was a day of fun and frolics as the equine sport so often associated with the social elite was once again delivered to the masses in the heart of the county. Gathering on the perimeter of the pitch to steal a glance at the celebrity guests making their way to the VIP area, onlookers were not disappointed as famous faces arrived intermittently to be greeted by excited fans and attentive photographers. Though subsequently slated in the national media for being tacky and attended by a poor grade of celebrity, the high profile guests who did make an appearance were charming and pleasant, all stopping to speak to members of the public and press before being whisked into the VIP Duke’s Marquee for a glass of bubbly, provided by The Vault bar in Woodford Green, and a three-course lunch designed by Masterchef judge, Gregg Wallace. Among the celebs in attendance were Nick Knowles, Bianca Gascoigne, Chantelle Houghton, Dane Bowers, Gareth Gates, Alex Reid, Peter Andre and the entire cast of The Only Way is Essex, the only noticeable absentee being Sam Faiers. Emerging from choppers that landed on the centre of the polo field, the TOWIE cast made their entrance via the red carpet ,passing through the gauntlet of the media and undoubtedly loving every minute of it. Harry Derbridge told Scene Magazine: “Oh, my God I loved arriving by helicopter, it was so much fun.”
28 SCENE
SCENE 29
Despite only emerging on the celebrity scene last year, the cast of the ITV2 hit show were not only favourites of the press but the public too – young girls could be heard screeching from afar as Joey Essex and Kirk Norcross emerged from the marquee for a quick visit to the gents and, to the delight of their army of fans, made regular appearances outside as fans Tweeted for them to come out and say hello throughout the day. Away from the VIP area the event was designed for a spectacular day out for all the family. A funfair in one corner of the field and a dinky derby and junior show jumping competition in the other, there was certainly a lot to see and do for guests of all ages. For others, Essex Polo was simply a chance to sit and relax with a picnic. Champagne and cocktail sausages were the order of the day as guests set out their blankets and settled in for an afternoon of entertainment. The highlight for many, including Scene Magazine, was an incredible performance by Aerostars, a breathtaking aerial display of aerobatics that literally left onlookers gasping in awe as aeroplanes flipped, climbed and spiralled in dizzying patterns high in the skies above Gaynes Park. At one point it seemed as if one of the planes had caught fire on a gravity-defying vertical climb which saw it run out of steam and spiral toward the ground, only to regain control and fall into a teasing display of acrobatics to the relief of a concerned ground who were left bewildered as to whether that was indeed part of the show – we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Dubbed a celebrity shoot-out, Chantelle Houghton and Alex Reid were the warm-up act to the main event. The new couple were
invited to battle it out on horseback to see who would emerge victorious in a penalty shoot-out style competition. A new addition to the programme for 2011 and perhaps one to never be repeated as the pair struggled to hit the ball drawing audible moans from spectators. The mood was soon lifted, however, as the plane carrying the match ball and parachute jumpers took to the skies and circled higher and higher before the flags of each participating nation could be seen as tiny specks in the sky. A matter of minutes later, the experts landed in the centre of the pitch, match ball in hand, and the action was underway. Polo is a difficult sport to watch. It is even more difficult to watch when the rules are unclear. Similar conversations regarding what was happening and who was winning could be heard all around the pitch. However, as the action went on and spectators began to grasp the rules, aided by the excellent pitch side loudspeaker commentary, the match proved to be a resounding success as crowds cheered the winning goal seeing the UK beat the South American team by 11 goals to 10. After Amy Childs had presented the UK team with the winner’s trophy and the champagne had been sprayed, the day guests left weary and sunburnt as the remainder of the evening guests arrived in their ‘gladrags’ ready to party the night away. In the strictly over 30s Duke’s Marquee, guests sunk champagne and cocktails as a fantastic line up of swinging, soulful live acts, including Kid Creole and the Coconuts and special guest artist, James ‘Arg’ Argent, performed classic numbers to a packed dance floor throughout the evening. Across from the Duke’s Marquee saw an equally lively evening in the Player’s Marquee. With DJ sets from Radio 1’s, Judge Jules and Seb Fontaine, Essex’s elite party crowd were dressed to impress for a night of dancing and debauchery. Now one of the event’s of the year on the Essex and East London calendar, the Duke of Essex Polo Trophy 2011 was a bigger spectacular than ever before. And, as the occasion grows in popularity with each passing year, the organizers for Essex Polo 2012 have some serious work to do to make it an even greater success.

Beauty S py Beauty... Just around the corner
Beauty…Just Around The Corner, with its bright sunny interior is the ideal place for a summer inspired pedicure. Their Twinkle Toes Luxury Pedicure is the just the thing for those who want to get their toes in perfect condition for the beach or for summer shoes. The treatment begins with choosing your polish from their extensive range of OPI shades. I opted for the interestingly titled “My Chihuahua Bites” coral. I was seated in the specially designated Twinkle Toes area of the salon and my feet were soaked, toe nails shaped and soles buffed by my therapist Katie. My Feet were massaged with Sundari’s “Omega 3 and Flaxseed Body Exfoliator” and soaked in a scented foot bath. Buffed until each foot was suitably softened, my cuticles were trimmed and feet then massaged with Sundari’s richly moisturising “Omega 3 and Soybean Softening Body Baume”. Finally my toenails were painted with my chosen shade, leaving me with summer scented tootsies ready to be bared! Yes, the 60 minute treatment leaves you with incredibly soft feet and beautifully painted toes. The addition of the luxurious Sundari products made this a thoroughly enjoyable experience Twinkle Toes Luxury Pedicure £30. IT’S A ROCKY TIME FOR A LOT OF COMPANIES SO DON’T GAMBLE WITH YOUR MONEY “WHEN CUSTOMERS COME TO US THEY KNOW THEIR MONEY IS SAFE”
T
he economic climate has been tough on the high street and we’ve recently seen a clutch of familiar brands go to the wall. But while the big retail giants struggle, one of our key local businesses are flourishing. Woodford based Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs has seen an increase in trade over the past two years and survived the recession unscathed. Managing Director, Michael
46 SCENE
Copp, believes his company’s success is down to a winning combination of good service, quality products and a flexible and honest approach to sales. “It’s been a busy couple of years. We have a good reputation so people come to us because of word of mouth or because of a recommendation from a previous customer.”
But when it comes to winning over these new customers, Michael thinks his company’s approach to sales sets them apart from his rivals. “Many companies want to sell at any cost – they don’t listen to the customer; they just want to push products and meet targets. They quote some absurd price and then quickly discount it to create the illusion that they’re giving the customer a good deal. We just don’t play that game. We’re not a target driven company and we don’t have a hard sales approach.”

return of a customer’s deposit if the company ceases trading.
“Value for money isn’t just about the physical product; it’s about the whole service. When a customer hands over their money they have to trust that the company will deliver. We pride ourselves on a 360 degree service – from quotation, to sale, to fitting to aftercare our only goal is to keep the customer happy. A business lives and dies by the service they provide.”
“When customers come to us they know their money is safe. As the old saying goes – ‘Let the Buyer Beware’.”
Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs stocks a range of furniture at different prices but every purchase buys something many other companies can’t provide: experience and a reliable service.
Not every company in the same market has seen the same success as Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs. Sharps and Moben recently went into administration and some customers may have lost their deposits. Michael cautions customers to consider where they spend their money: “It’s important to think about who you’re buying from. You don’t want to leave yourself exposed when you pay a deposit for a kitchen or a bedroom. What guarantees can they offer? It’s a rocky time for a lot of companies so don’t gamble with your money.”
Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs is approved by Trust Mark, a government backed initiative which helps consumers find reliable and trustworthy companies. Every firm’s
Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs is a member of the Consumer Protection Association, which fully vets each company for professional competence and integrity and guarantees the
Some companies have slashed prices to get customers through the door but Michael is quick to point out that getting value for money doesn’t always mean going with the cheapest deal.
With everything going so well, what plans does Michael have for the future of Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs? He’s keeping tight–lipped: “It’s an interesting time and I’m assessing my options. I wouldn’t rule out expansion but the time has to be right.” And with everything going so well for Michael, expect to see new branches of Dream Bedroom & Kitchen Designs opening up sometime soon.

DIVORCE AND SEPARATION IS ALWAYS A DIFFICULT TIME, BUT WHAT OPTIONS ARE THERE TO TRY AND MINIMISE THE UPSET? ‘PRE-NUPS’ – A GOOD IDEA? A ‘pre-nup’ is an agreement entered into prior to marriage, which sets out how a couple would want their assets to be divided in the event of divorce. Contrary to popular belief pre-nuptial agreements are not just favoured by the rich and famous. More and more people are considering pre-nups as a way of protecting the wealth that they have acquired before marriage. Unlike many other countries, pre-nups are still not yet legally binding in England and Wales. However a recent case has led to a shift in the law. For the first time an English Court has upheld a pre-nuptial agreement in a divorce case. As a consequence there is now a presumption that the pre-nuptial agreement should be upheld unless it is simply manifestly unfair.

COOKING UP A THE WHITEBULL BRASSERIE IS A RESTAURANT THAT CERTAINLY SURPRISES. SITUATED ON LOUGHTON HIGH ROAD, WHITEBULL IS FAST BECOMING THE PLACE TO DINE AT, MUCH DUE TO THE FABULOUS MENU CREATED BY CHEF AND OWNER LEE BULL.
L
ee Bull, who is still only in his early 30s, is an extraordinary chef and has an infectious passion for food of every kind. Lee started his career over 14 years ago as a Commis chef at the Ivy and has acquired a massive collection of techniques from many of the great culinary masters. Beginning his career at the Ivy allowed him to gain experience working under renowned chef, Mark Hix, which gave Lee the passion and dedication required to make it in a tough industry. Lee then moved to Le Caprice as Chef de Partie under Elliot Ketley and continued to work his way up within the company. Whilst working for Caprice Holdings they acquired the company Signature Restaurants. This could not have come at a better time for the young chef as the company included some of the UK’s most prestigious eateries. This allowed Lee to go from strength to strength moving around the company into such restaurants as Daphne’s and Bam-Bou, giving him the experience working with different styles of food including Vietnamese, French and home-style Italian. Lee’s knowledge and skill-set has both great breadth and depth. This is evident in The Whitebull’s menu which includes a wide range of culinary delights from a classic Whitebull Burger made from pure ground Hereford rib steak to the Roasted Cod with a shrimp risotto and tarragon dressing. Lee is meticulous when it comes to sourcing his ingredients, using only the freshest and finest produce. The restaurant is attracting some of the most acclaimed West End chefs to dine. Gary Lee, Executive Chef of the Ivy, is himself a fan and has been spotted frequently dining - ensuring Lee is producing the food that Gary knows he is capable of! Lee Bull has had an illustrious career full of awards and recognition with over 14 years experience as Head Chef in
some of the UK’s most prestigious restaurants including Le Caprice, The Ivy and Scott’s of Mayfair. When he left his position as Head Chef of Mayfair’s Le Caprice to open Whitebull Brasserie at the beginning of this year, we had to ask: Why Loughton? “This is where I feel it is needed most. There is a lack of high quality restaurants in this area but I feel that’s very much what the people who live here want. A lot of local West Essex residents were regulars in the restaurants I worked in prior to here, and many work in the city and west end and will travel to find quality food. We thought why not bring our concept to them.” Whitebull Brasserie with its minimal classic décor and outside sofa seating makes the perfect setting for any occasion whether it’s to sample one of the classic cocktails, a light lunch or a sumptuous dinner. It’s one not to be missed. For more information contact White Bull Brasserie on 020 8508 0806 or go online: www.whitebullbrasserie.com/info@whitebullbrasserie.com SCENE 55

LOCAL DINING AT ITS IF YOU PURSUE FOOD EXCELLENCE, TAKE A DRIVE TO CHINGFORD, WHERE JUST OFF THE GREEN YOU WILL FIND TABLE 7, A RESTAURANT WHICH SITS IMPRESSIVELY AMONG ITS COMPADRES. Words by James Green
F
rom the moment I entered the restaurant, I was instantly impressed: Table 7 presents a welcoming and buzzy atmosphere, in a contemporary yet comfortable environment which the restaurant owners have managed to get just right. This comfortable, fine dining gastro-style restaurant is owned by Victor Garcia who launched Table 7 in September 2010 and will be celebrating its first Birthday next month. Owner and Chef, Victor Garcia, started his career at City Rhodes restaurant. Whilst there, Victor was personally trained by Michelin Star Chef, Gary Rhodes. After 3 Years Victor became the Head Chef at The Peasant Restaurant in Clerkenwell, building the restaurant to become a success over his 3 years there, his next venture was to become Tommy Hilfiger’s personal chef preparing food for private parties arranged by the acclaimed Designer. Spending 2 years travelling the world with Tommy Hilfiger, Victor then returned to London, to a Gastro Bar in Green Lanes, before making the decision to open his very own restaurant, Table 7.

The menu, designed by Victor and Head Chef, Paul O’Leary, who has worked alongside the likes of Pierre Koffman and Marco Pierre White, delivers a concise array of entrees and dishes to suit all palates with a nod to modern British and European fare. Table 7 is proud to source their produce locally where possible. The mouth-watering dishes on offer range from Pan Roast Cod served with Puy Lentils, Pancetta and Salsa Verde to Braised Moroccan style Lamb Shank. Guaranteed, your dinner will be exciting and impress without being pretentious and you certainly won’t leave hungry! My delicious dinner was made up of an entree of Shallow fried Calamari with Table 7 Homemade Sweet Chilli that was, quite simply, out of this world. This was followed by, what I can honestly say was, the best fillet of beef I have ever eaten. I have never tasted anything so tender, creamy and delicious. It was cooked to perfection and accompanied with a fondant potato, fresh green beans, and to finish, a port jus. Finally, for dessert, a home-made chocolate fondant, served with a berry compote and vanilla ice cream - everything a dessert should be, light and delicious, without leaving you feeling bloated at the end of the meal.

You can expect to pay between £25.00 for a twocourse meal and £30.00 for three courses. Offering an enviable wine list comprising delicious wines from all over the world, ranging in depth and flavour to compliment your food, there is something for everyone here, including a cold beer if you are stopping through. The restaurant can furnish functions for 50 seated, and can earnestly house 150 guests for a finger or fork buffet. Table 7 is also licensed to entertain, so perfect for a wedding, christening or special birthday. Friends will be wowed by the taste factor and superb fineness of the food, as well as Table 7’s decor. To conclude, I cannot emphasize enough how much I enjoyed dining at Table 7. The service was faultless, the atmosphere was perfect and the food was simply world class! So whether you fancy a drink at the bar, a light bite at the front or a hearty dinner out back, Table 7 will appeal to couples and groups alike. Bon appétit! BENTLEY HAS FACELIFTED THE CONTINENTAL GT REVISED RATHER THAN REINVENTED, PREVIOUS CONTINENTAL GT FAILINGS LIKE A DATED SAT-NAV SYSTEM HAVE BEEN RECTIFIED, SUSPENSION AND AERODYNAMICS HAVE BEEN TWEAKED AND INTERNAL FRICTION IN THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO IMPROVE RESPONSE AND EFFICIENCY. For Crewe’s design and engineering teams, the new Continental GT coupe is an opportunity to set a bold and exciting direction for one of Bentley’s most revered names – the Continental. The seminal and highly successful Continental GT, introduced in 2003, represented the first step in Bentley’s renaissance and defined a whole new market segment. It was a luxury GT offering excellent usability that remained true to the Bentley grand touring spirit. Now the new Continental GT 4-seat coupe builds on the success of its iconic predecessor, capturing that GT spirit but with even higher standards of design, engineering, luxury, craftsmanship, dynamic performance, everyday practicality and refinement. A beautifully sculptured new body gives the GT coupe an even crisper, more defined appearance. The contemporary interior offers new levels of cabin design, comfort and hand-crafted luxury. The seats, for example, provide even greater support and rear leg-room; a sweeping dashboard even more style and modernity. Balanced Mode Radiator speaker technology and Dirac Dimensions™ digital sound processing deliver enhanced audio quality. Bentley’s acclaimed 6-litre, 12-cylinder, twin-turbocharged powertrain now has a raised power output of 575PS (567bhp/423kW) and 700Nm (516lb ft) of torque and this is mated to a new Quickshift transmission which enables double downshifts. Thanks to advanced FlexFuel technology, it can also run on both standard unleaded petrol (gasoline) and sustainable bioethanol (up to E85) or any mix of the two. In late 2011 an all-new, high-output 8-cylinder engine will also be available to order. This advanced power unit will deliver a 40 percent reduction in emissions compared with the W12 engine and will offer a class-leading CO2 emissions-to-power ratio with Bentley levels of performance and refinement. Both engines are coupled to an allwheel drive system with a sporty 40:60 rear-torque bias (compared with the 50:50 bias of the original Continental GT), minimising understeer during hard cornering and allowing the experienced driver to control the car’s line and balance via precise throttle control. “The new Continental GT is an automotive work of art, with superb craftsmanship and elegant, contemporary design. Badrul Haque
SCENE Words by Frankie Cooper
DELICIOUS FOOD, TOP QUALITY SERVICE AND EXPANDING HIS EMPIRE – THAT IS WHAT RESTAURANT OWNER BADRUL HAQUE IS ALL ABOUT. MY SCENE CATCHES UP WITH THE OWNER OF TEMPLE FUSION, IN WOODFORD GREEN, TO FIND OUT A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL RESTAURATEUR. Let’s start at the beginning; where did this passion for restaurants begin? I have always been involved in the business. In 1987 I started working in a restaurant and I bought my first restaurant in 1998 in Buckhurst Hill. It was really run down, the place was not doing any business and it needed turning around. We took it over and put a lot of hard work in and opened up. It was the start of a good thing and ever since we’ve done really well. So how has your small empire grown? We just moved forward from one restaurant to another and now we have six. Buckhurst Hill was the first one, The Coriander, and then we opened Vauxhall, Blackheath and one in Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, all under the same name. In 2008 during the recession we bought a restaurant in Ware, Hertfordshire, and named it Temple, which is also what the new one in Woodford is called. The newest one we bought one and a half years ago as we were opening the Ware restaurant. It’s taken a while to get planning permission and building work done but we finally opened up nearly four months ago. I had a great opportunity to expand the business buying during the recession and I took it. I got the restaurants cheaper and turned them around and it’s worked well.
66 SCENE
You’ve obviously got a magic recipe for success? The secret is a combination of hard work, good quality food and giving people what they want. I talk to customers for just two minutes and I know what they want and how they want it. I can read customers’ minds sometimes and if we don’t have what they want, I will create it for them. So do you get hands on in the kitchen? I’ve been working as a chef for about three years but now I mostly manage the restaurants. I spend a lot of time working with the chefs – I
am a very fussy eater and I like to create and cook something different. I want something that other people don’t have. When I was younger I used to help my mum cook and because I was a fussy eater I am very particular about what goes into dishes. I try to use minimum oil, I don’t like grease and only two or three of the dishes on our menu contain food colouring – I like it to be natural. So what has influenced your food? I’m from Bangladesh and my menu is a mixture of the full-flavoured Bangladeshi dishes with
Nepalese and Indian dishes. It makes a nice mix up. You obviously spend a lot of time at work – do you live nearby? I live in Gants Hill and have done for about seven years. My family had a restaurant there many years back called the Curry Emporium – it was the first curry restaurant in the area. I knew a few people here and soon as we wanted to buy a house I thought it would be a great place to live with my wife and three children. It also is in a great location for getting to the other restaurants further away. What do you do in your free time? I try to spend most of my time with my kids, taking them to the park. I also love taking my wife out – it doesn’t happen a lot because of work but I keep promising her I will do it more often. Where do you go out for dinner? My favourite place is Sheesh, in Chigwell. And finally what is your greatest ambition? To open a restaurant with 300 to 400 covers serving two or three different kinds of cuisine together – and I will do it.
