Darcey Bussell

A passion for dance Darcey Bussell was already famous but she has become a celebrity UK household name since taking her rightful place on the judging panel of BBC1’s prime-time Saturday night show Strictly Come Dancing

Words by Nicky Kemp

S

he replaced Pop Star and former Strictly Champion Alesha Dixon in the autumn and brings a welcome relief of elegance and reserve to an otherwise all male panel made up of the iniquitous Craig Revel-Horwood, the over-excitable Bruno Tonioli and everybody’s Uncle Len Goodman. Darcey for the role of Strictly Judge is a no-brainer No-one could ever accuse the former Prima Ballerina of not knowing what she is talking about and already, she has earned herself an excellent reputation for remaining impartial and offering constructive criticism to the contestants – although she was barely able to contain her excitement recently, when feeding back to Olympic medal-winning gymnast Louis Smith on his Tango: “Oh my God, I wasn’t expecting that. I can see you’re using muscles you haven’t used before...That hip action! I can see you’re going to go far in this show!” Born Darcey Andrea Crittle in London on 27 April 1969, Darcey’s parents divorced when she was just three. Her mother remarried an Australian and they spent some time in Australia before moving back to the UK so that Darcey could attend school in London. “Dancing and Ballet have always been my passion”, says Darcey - whose mother also trained with the Royal Ballet

School and went on to become a model, actress and owner of a fashion store. At school Darcey was keen on sports – excelling in gymnastics and swimming. She also enjoyed playing football with the boys. She attended the Arts Educational School at The Barbican, demonstrated a flair for dance and so auditioned for the Royal Ballet School age 13 – relatively late for a dancer. She won one of eight places that year. However, most of Darcey’s peers had been at the school since they were eleven and Darcey was very aware that she had some catching up to do. She trained hard to improve her technique in her free time after class and signed up for lessons with the renowned Svetlana Berisova during her summer holidays. In 1985, age 16, her dedication paid off when she was accepted into the Royal Ballet School’s Upper School. She was spotted whilst still at school by the late Kenneth MacMillan and in 1988 he gave her the leading role of Princess Rose in his ballet The Prince of The Pagodas – Darcey’s ticket to the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet. A year later in December 1989, on the opening night of the show, she was promoted to Principal - at the time, the youngest ballerina to be given this honour. Her many roles include Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, the Sugar Plum

Fairy in The Nutcracker and Giselle in Giselle. She made several guest appearances with the New York City Ballet starting in June 1993 with a performance of the pas de deux from Agon and she danced the première of Sylvia by Léo Delibes choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in November 2004. Broadcast television performances include Carmen and the full-length ballet of Sylvia broadcast Christmas Day 2005. Darcey also starred in The Queen Mother’s 90th Birthday Tribute and has been the subject of a South Bank Show documentary (1992), a BBC Omnibus (1998) and a Documentary called ‘Britain’s Ballerina’ (2005). She announced her retirement as a Principal Dancer at the Royal Ballet in 2006, staying with the company as ‘guest principal artist’ through to 8 June 2007, when she officially retired from ballet with a final performance of MacMillan’s Song of the Earth at the Royal Opera House, broadcast on BBC 2. Darcey’s final performance was met with a standing ovation and rumour has it there wasn’t a dry eye in the house and never have so many flowers been thrown on stage. She reportedly suffered from depression following her retirement; the sudden break from the relentless pressure of performing left her feeling down. She

moved to Sydney with her husband Angus Forbes and daughters Phoebe, 11, and eight-year-old Zoe. She claims dance eventually lifted her out of her depression - she presented a programme on an Australian arts TV channel and embraced dance classes again. She was quoted as saying: “As soon as I was moving again, I was happy”. Despite retiring from the professional stage, Darcey remains greatly involved in the dance world. She is the President of the Royal Academy of Dance, Patron of Sydney Dance Company and the International Dance Teachers Association and a recipient of the Carl Alan Award for contributions to dance. In December 2007 she teamed up with Welsh Opera star Katherine Jenkins to stage a song and dance musical called Viva La Diva, paying tribute to the stars that inspired them, including Madonna and Judy Garland. They toured the country, sold over £2m of tickets and subsequently sold out 10 further UK Arenas including two shows at London’s O2 Arena in May 2008. A ballerina’s career is famously short-lived but Darcey has been clever enough to spread her (Odette/ Odile) wings far and wide, raising her profile among a much wider audience than ballet alone attracts. She SCENE  21

has modelled for Marks and Spencer, Boodle and Dunthorne, Dunhill’s Watches, Mulberry, The World Gold Council, De Beers Diamonds for Tatler, Harvy Nicols, Simpsons and Audi and appeared in television commercials for American Express and Lloyds TSB. She has been photographed by Mario Testino, Lord Lichfield, Lord Snowdon, Patrick de Matineau and John Swanell among others and appeared as Covergirl for GQ, Tatler and Harpers and Queen. A full-length portrait of her by the artist Allen Jones RA, commissioned by The National Portrait Gallery was unveiled on 23 May 1994 - It first hung proudly in 10 Downing Street and is now displayed in the National Portrait Gallery for all to see. Darcey was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1995 New Year Honours List and subsequently a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2006 Birthday Honours list. In 2008 she created Magic Ballerina books: a collectable series for girls age 5-8 featuring a little girl called Delphie who joins a ballet school and discovers her shoes are magical. She also co-wrote The Young Ballerina with the Royal Ballet School and an introduction to the book The Illustrated Book of Ballet by Barbara Newman, which showcases five of the ballets in which she starred. What’s more, she 22  SCENE

has featured on Desert Island Discs, was a guest on Concorde’s final flight, voted one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People Magazine in 1994, made it into Hello’s top ten of Britain’s Most Elegant Women in 2002 and her life-size waxwork double is displayed in the celebrity hall of fame that is Madame Tussauds. Darcey’s most recent performance was on 12 August at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics with a troupe of 200 ballerinas. Fingers crossed she will take to the Strictly stage to bewitch us again some point this season but meanwhile, all eyes – including hers - are on the contestants. Original Essex-girl Denise Van Outen, most famous for co-presenting Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast in the 1990s, is currently tipped as the Strictly Come Dancing 2012 front runner however Darcey refuses to comment on the subject of who she thinks will win or who her favourite dancer is - although she did describe Louis Smith as “very talented”!

The Inca Trail

Climbing to Machu Picchu STANDING together, hand in hand, 20 people who have just one thing in common are spellbound, watching the sun rise over the sacred town of Machu Picchu. Words by Leanne Ehren

T

ears silently running down many cheeks, I find it hard to stifle my sobs as the ashes of a lady I know nothing about are scattered on the worn surface of the Sungate as the beams of golden light shine down on us all.

which raises money for breast cancer clinical trials at St Margaret’s Hospital and is what we have all helped raise £30,000 for. And after seeing the beauty that lay before us all, I could understand why she chose this place to be laid to rest.

It suddenly brings home what we are all doing; why handfuls of people who never knew each other one week ago have just spent the last four days hiking through the Andes along the Peruvian Inca Trail and shared a memory to last a lifetime.

It has not been an easy feat by any means to get here – we smell, we are tired and have not showered in days, but as I look around every single person is at peace in this spiritual land.

It has been in the name of breast cancer. The killer disease that claims so many lives and thousands of people. The woman whose ashes our group leader Ashraf just scattered, lost her battle with breast cancer. She went to Peru on a similar trip one year ago with supporters of The Epping Breast Unit Charitable Fund, 24  SCENE

As a group of 16 fundraisers for the charity, joined by a doctor, trek leader and three Peruvian tour guides, our journey started back in Cusco when our tiny aeroplane landed – and I couldn’t breathe! I had spent three months training hard with Dry Drayton’s Full Circle Fitness guru Simon Goswell

getting myself in tip top condition for this mammoth trek, but nothing could prepare me for the effects of altitude. I know I was opening and closing my mouth but it just felt like the air was not getting in. Then came the “drunken feeling” and as I explored the local markets in Cusco - packed with Alpaca garments and locally crafted tapestries – I felt myself dizzying, becoming short of breath every two steps. How was I going to cope when we started trekking? On our acclimatisation hike our mixed group bonded and we started to learn about one other. Some people were here for specific reasons like Gary Ayliffe who lost both his mum and best friend to breast cancer, and I felt honoured to walk alongside breast cancer survivor Amanda Barr, who was diagnosed with the disease aged just 39. Everyone was different in their own way; there was an optician, shopkeeper, teacher and accountant, from different places and of very different walking abilities. But that is one of the things that made the trek enjoyable – getting to know this mixed bag of people and learning about their lives. The acclimatisation trek helped me get used to the altitude and gave me a taste of the Andean mountains and most importantly, the spectacular views I would be seeing for the next four days.

Throughout the hours of hiking, our guide Fred delved into telling us about the history of the Inca’s. Instantly I understood their connection to nature and Mother Earth. It is a culture that although conquered by Catholicism is still extremely spiritual, believes in the after life, and most importantly, puts the natural Earth above everything else. When walking along the Inca Trail itself, which for our route was a little over 26 miles, you feel embedded within nature. It feels like everything around you is breathing, from the rocks to the trees. It’s as though the mountains are alive and you feel energy from them. The first day of our trek was relatively straightforward and easy, covering about 12km over six or so hours, still passing by the houses of a few locals who live along the trail and seeing other groups. The route is visa-controlled and restricted to 500 people each day, which meant that although we saw other groups it was by no means crowded. One of the most amazing things about this trip were the chaskis – our local Peruvian porters. Not only did they carry out sleeping equipment, but also everything needed to set up our camp and cook us some of the most amazing food. To arrive and find a pitched dining tent half way up a mountain – complete with tables and chairs – is one thing, but to then eat some of the most amazingly tasty and freshly cooked food prepared with nothing other than what they can carry on their backs, is just incredible. SCENE  25

Knowing what was waiting for you at meal times just made those tough parts of the trek a little easier. Every night was cold and morning was an early start but with the chaskis waiting outside your tent with coca leaf tea and pancakes in the mess tent, even if it was 5am, we were off to a wonderful start. Day two was by far the longest and hardest day when, although we set off early, we climbed more than 1,000m in four hours to our highest point of Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,200m. Each walker went at their own pace with nearly two hours difference between the first and last person arriving at the peak. I was somewhere in the middle and spent a lot of time by myself counting steps to keep focussed. When I hit about 4,000m the altitude really hit me – “why is the sky pink?” is all I kept asking myself. But I just stopped, drank lots of water and took it slow. And I made it, to the sound of a rapturous applause from those who had already reached the summit. And boy was the view worth it. You could see snow-capped mountains for miles around although it started to get pretty chilly, you felt so close to the sun and clouds. Walking down was taxing on the brain, carefully stepping, one foot in front of the other. It was so easy to just topple and slip – but when the steep mountain is below you, it’s worth keeping a firm grip on those walking poles. 26  SCENE

And the third day was again a tough downhill day with what felt like hours of continuous downhill slogging – I almost welcomed with open arms any uphill piece of land I came across, just to give my knees and ankles a rest. The beautiful Machu Picchu Canyon finished off our third day as we arrived at the last campsite which was more crowded than the others as dozens of groups crammed in to be at the front of the line for when the gates opened to path the following day. Getting up at 3.30am on day four was a struggle. Queuing under the starry sky in the pitch black with our headtorches on, waiting for the gatekeepers to let us walk along our final path was a slightly torturous, yet somehow magical experience. But when we were let through, boy did we walk fast. We were racing against the sunrise solidly for nearly two hours to reach the sungate and finally watch the rays shine down upon Machu Picchu. It was worth it. Walking through the rainforest, in the cloud, in the harsh heat in the middle of the day, starting in the dark – and almost finishing at sunset one day. Every footstep, every tear, every drop of sweat was worth it because this trip had been truly, and utterly, amazing.

Forest School

Recorded breaking to raise over £4,000

O

n Tuesday 13th November 2012, members of the Guinness World Record breaking team formally handed a cheque for the amount of £4,317.03 to Mike Jackson, founder of the Essex Disabled Sports Foundation. This amount was raised by a brave team of pupils, parents, staff and legendary paralympian Noel Thatcher, when they made history by running the furthest distance ever on a single treadmill in 24 hours. The Forest Twelve smashed the previous record, which was held by a team in Germany, by an impressive 14.9km, having collectively run a total of 437.7km in 24 hours in July this year.

surrounding disabled children. The other half goes to the Forest School Olympic Scholarship pot - a fund to sponsor a child living in one of the five Olympic boroughs through their time at Forest School. The world record attempt represented a culmination of Forest School’s extensive Olympic Legacy work. School staff, pupils and parents have involved themselves in a number of initiatives over recent years to ensure that Forest School and the local community are left with a lasting Olympic legacy. Over £17,000 has been raised for charitable purposes by Forest pupils, staff and parents. On receiving the cheque, founder of the Essex Disabled Sports Foundation, Mike Jackson: “It is a true privilege to be part of this school. We really appreciate the School’s efforts, and I am so pleased that we are able to share this occasion with the children here today”. For further information on Forest School, including news on our work in the local community, and the Forest School Olympic Scholarship, visit www.forest.org.uk

Watched by a packed audience of 300 Pre-Prep and Prep School children, Mike Jackson collected the cheque from members of the world record breaking team, including Noel Thatcher. Mr Jackson came wearing his 2012 London Games torchbearers’ uniform and even brought his replica torch with him, so children in the Prep School could hold it. Mr Jackson spoke of his pride at being chosen as one of only 8000 torchbearers and congratulated the team on their monumental efforts in July. Half the £8,500 raised from the world record attempt will go to The Essex Disabled Sports Foundation, a charity dedicated to raising money for the purchase of sporting equipment and other sporting opportunities for disabled children. From raising funds for coaching, to adventure holidays, the charity works tirelessly to improve the awareness of issues

Would you like a “perfect smile”? Thank you for your wonderful treatment and my now perfect looking teeth. I’m one of many that are petrified of the dentist so it took me at least 6 months to pluck up the courage to come for a consultation. My old dentist told me my teeth were beyond repair which is not want you want to hear when your 28 years old. So this was a big step for me. Every appointment with you guys was never a chore and I actually enjoyed every visit, never have I said that about a dentist before. I would 100% recommend your services to anyone who will listen as not only have you restored my broken and quite frankly horrific teeth but you have also restored my confidence, especially at a time when self esteem was already pretty low. The treatment to my teeth looked like they have always belonged to me and so natural too. When I tell people what work I had done they actually don’t believe me, that’s how good they look. So thank you all again for my new smile, my new found confidence and making me feel pretty again. Your wonderful support and the treatment I received was fantastic. - Lucy Powell

Driving Home for

We all know Father Christmas rides a sleigh to get around the world whilst delivering his presents to all the good boys and girls. Well, this year we figured that dasher, dancer, prancer, Rudolf and the other reindeer must be getting close to retirement. So we spoke to our friends in the automotive industry to see what we could do to help Father Christmas get around once his reindeer have retired. Turnover to see Santa’s rides... SCENE  45

Santa’s Rides

After much debate in the office about which car Santa drives on his day off (boxing Day), We spoke to our friends in the motor industry to see if any of them had a client by the name of Mr. Claus... Unfortunately none of them did, but that did not stop them from coming up with their own designs for Santa if he ever did stop by for a new ride.

Jaguar Our first festive treat is this Jaguar sledge, an intriguing look at a Big Cat on its way to the next chimney top. Jaguar’s version of Santa’s sleigh reveals a push-me-pull-you, very modern take on what a Jag could be. For a company beset on changing its image, it’s an intriguing look at how radical new forms can transform opinions of what a Jaguar stands for.

Vauxhall Here’s the Vauxhall take on the design project we’ve set them this Christmas: to design a Vauxhall-branded Santa’s sleigh. The boffins at Vauxhall/ Opel design HQ have come up with this – a development of the latest GM Europe with hints of new Astra here and Ampera plug-in hybrid there.

46  SCENE

Aston Martin A team of creatives at Aston Martin Design sketched out this new image, and it’s plain to see some of the Aston design cues transferring over to this snowmobile: note the Vantage-effect rear end and they’ve rummaged around in the world’s most expensive parts bin to recycle the gorgeous One-77 rear light clusters.

Bentley We reckon Father Christmas is probably a bit of a Bentley guy: he has a large number of miles to cover in speed and in great comfort – and he needs something big and plush to look after all those presents. What better solution than something mixing the design class of a Bentley with the snow-covering ability of a downhill toboggan?

Land rover Land Rover has plumped for a two-seater layout, with space for a reindeer in front of Santa. Santa Claus is clearly at home in his Land Rover sledge; he’s puffing on a generously sized cigar while he views his pop-up holographic globe sat-nav.

The All New range rover

Land Rover has revealed the all-new Range Rover, the world’s most refined and capable SUV. The fourth generation of the iconic Range Rover made its global public debut at the Paris International Motor Show.

T

he world’s first SUV with a lightweight allaluminium body, the new Range Rover takes the capabilities of the marque’s flagship to a new level, with even greater luxury and refinement, enhanced performance and handling on all terrains, and significant advances in sustainability. Designed and engineered at Land Rover’s development centres in the UK, the new Range Rover will be produced in a state-of-the-art new low-energy manufacturing facility at Solihull, UK. Over £370 million has been invested in the Solihull plant to create the world’s largest aluminium body shop. Presenting the new Range Rover, John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director said: “This is a vehicle that

will take us to the next level of success. Range Rover is our flagship and a true British success story, designed, engineered and built in Britain. Its distinctive design, breadth of capability and class-leading refinement and comfort have always made it unique. “When we asked our customers what they wanted us to change, they told us ‘don’t change it, just make it better’. We set out to create not just the world’s finest luxury SUV, but the world’s finest luxury vehicle.” The all-new Range Rover has a clean and elegant shape which is derived from a fresh new interpretation of Range Rover design cues. While instantly recognisable as a Range Rover, the new vehicle takes a significant step forward with a bold evolution of the model’s iconic design language.

The luxurious interior has a modern and pure character, incorporating distinctive Range Rover design cues, but with a fresh and very contemporary treatment. The cabin retains the characteristic strong, architectural forms, and these are emphasised by extremely clean and elegant surfaces which are flawlessly executed using the finest leathers and veneers. Speaking at the Land Rover press conference, Land Rover Design Director & Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern said: “Our customers love Range Rover’s distinctive design, its practicality, its versatility and, of course its high levels of sophistication. So when we were developing the new Range Rover, we had a duty to protect that DNA, while at the same we needed to be bold in moving it forward for a new generation. “The reality is this vehicle has been transformed. It is all new, but it’s still unmistakeably a Range Rover, elegant and beautifully proportioned.” The all-new model has been engineered to meet the highest luxury car standards for refinement. The Land Rover stand provides a comprehensive overview of the new range, with a quartet of vehicles that represent each powertrain and equipment grade available, together with striking new exterior finishes and detailing. With its highly acclaimed line-up of torque-rich engines, the new Range Rover delivers swift and effortless performance. Customers have a choice of a petrol 510PS LR-V8 Supercharged and two diesel (3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 and 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8) engines, all of which are now paired with a smooth and responsive eight-speed automatic transmission. True to the Range Rover DNA, the new model features the unique Command Driving Position, placing the driver in an elevated, upright seating position - typically over 90mm higher than other premium SUVs - to provide a supreme sense of confidence and control.
