On Saturday 17th December, The Zen Studio in Loughton hosted a fun Christmas Party for existing and prospective clients. It was a full afternoon of activities, showcasing the new and exciting classes now available at the studio.

NEW YEAR Too many mince pies, too much mulled wine - we all like to overindulge during the festive season… January is the time to be tired, bloated and have skin the colour of bread sauce!

With the New Year already upon us, thoughts of a New You and the endless detox and fad products being advertised can leave you confused and overwhelmed. orget about places overrun with tourists and the typical trappings of a Mediterranean resort. Forget too, a Spain where everyone speaks English and the bloke next to you comes from Birmingham or Bournemouth. This is the REAL Spain and even to the Spanish, The Galician region is something different. Galicia borders Portugal to the south and is in the epicentre of the Spanish fishing and seafood industries. The Galician’s have their own language and culture which impacts what they eat and drink; it’s Spanish but with a twist.

Connected to Galicia on the North West of the Spanish mainland by a 19th Century bridge lays the tiny island of Isla de la Toja, pronounced “tocka” or to the locals “A Toxa” (“tosha”). The island is known throughout Spain for its healthy climate, and spas have been created here for centuries – the finest is probably to be found at the Hesperia Isla de la Toja hotel where SCENE Magazine had the pleasure of staying. An inviting bar across from the hotel offers locally produced wine, beer and tapas in a more casual setting. It’s not just the hotel that should make you want to visit Isla de la Toja though. The island itself is a gem. There are golf courses, a marina, tennis facilities and even a casino opposite the hotel which opens late. The most famous symbol of the island is the must-see tiny chapel, built in the 12th Century and covered entirely with scallop shells. waters of the island. Slightly further afield from Isla de la Toja are local towns and villages well worth exploring, including the quaint fishing town of Combarro and the old town of Cambados. As well as seafood, wine features strongly in this region; the local Rias Baixas region is renowned for its white wines made from the Albariño grape variety. Visitors can take a tour of the nearby vineyards and indulge in one of the many wine-tastings on offer. Given its location, the transfer from airports is a little longer than in the tourist hot spots – but Isla de la Toja offers a very different experience for the traveller determined to find something a little more rewarding and a little more authentic from the norm. Low-cost Spanish airline Vueling flies from London heathrow to La Coruna and transfers are available to Isla de la Toja. HAVE YOUR CASH SAVINGS REACHED THE POINT OF NO RETURN? There has recently been a common theme of discussion with both my clients and prospects. Low interest rates! At the start of November 2011, the Consumer Prices Index was measured at 5.2% (the Retail Prices Index was 5.6%). With the Bank of England base rate at 0.5%, high inflation is becoming more and more of a danger for your cash savings. What a lot of my clients don’t realise is that even though the interest rates for their savings account is so low, it is still taxed 20% at source. Therefore, for every £100 of interest, you only receive £80. Furthermore, if you are higher or additional rate taxpayer, you still need to pay a further 20% or 30% on this gross amount via your annual self-assessment tax return. The concern is that it is likely that your savings are also failing to keep up with inflation. For example, a basicrate (20%) taxpayer needs to find an account paying 6.5% to keep pace with rising prices. 40% / 50% taxpayers need to find accounts paying 8.67% / 10.4% (source: Office for National Statistics, Nov 2011). Yet there are none that offer this rate, of course, all of which is why many savers are being forced to look farther afield to make the most of their money. If you have a Deposit Account or even a Cash ISA, ask yourself how much interest you are being paid. Of course, it will not match the above needed figures. Warren Buffet said “Inflation is a far more devastating tax than anything that has been enacted by our legislature”. With the cost of education, medicine and care homes rising and rising, can you afford to lose the purchasing power of your cash? Today there is a clear difference between a “saver” and an “investor”. Only the “investor” has a chance to overcome the dangerous impact of inflation.

Words by Louise Prew What is the Shaolin Temple and its practices about? The whole concept of what we do lays behind my husband being a Shaolin Temple Warrior. This is the practice learnt in the Shaolin Temple which is situated in Henan, the ancient province of China, home to three quarters of Chinese dynasties. The children, from a young age eat, live and breathe Kung Fu, much like children being tutored from a young age for premier league football over here. Once they graduate, they have mastered physical strength and the systems which make up Shaolin Kung Fu. It sounds like something from the Matrix! Yes! It’s seen as kind of funky and interesting but it’s actually a way of living, a religion for them and its a very serious commitment. Shifu left academic education at the age of 8, and studied gongfu full time, 6-8 hours a day, 6 days a week, 50 weeks a year, until he gained acceptance into the Shaolin Temple aged 18. He takes his gongfu very seriously! Tell us about Zen Studio My husband is a teacher of Kung fu and while the studio was predominantly about teaching that discipline we have expanded into new and exciting things. We used to be called Gymophobics but we changed the name to Fitzone. Kung Fu has connotations of being

scary, yet the Shaolin Temple invented Zen and that’s what we wanted to get across. We have a space next to the studio which is a ladies gym and we’ve got everything going on there from Salsa, to Zumba, Latin, yoga and vibration plates, beauty and oriental therapies. I see that you have an array of classes for children, tell us about that Aside from our very popular Kungfu Tigers, our latest additions are local professional dancers, husband and wife Djordje and Emma who teach both adults and children. So we are going Strictly! There’s a great demand for it and we are delighted to be supplying it. Their children’s class is called Dancing Divas, its very fun yet technically excellent. We also have YogaKats starting up, where children just seem to thrive. Sleep issues diminish, anxiety lessens and confidence improves, all of these traits are so important in growing children. How popular is the Kung Fu? It’s very popular. Men love it because they want to reassert their strength and return to discipline. They discover muscles in parts of the body they never knew existed in the Qigong Class! Qi Gong channels energy internally and externally via dynamic and static postures. Tai Chi is also very popular for health and defensive benefits. For children, it’s incredibly important for building their confidence and self esteem. Many children nowadays are afraid in the playground of bullies. While Kung Fu doesn’t condone violence, it provides them with the confidence of knowing they can defend themselves should they need to. What do people say about The Zen Studio? We are like a big family here and our ladies and students become friends as they spend a lot of time here. Many ladies have lost masses of weight through the Fitzone program. Their inch loss has been astonishing!

What part do you play at Zen? I am very lucky in that my husband works in the evening and is a stay at home daddy in the day when I can look after the businesses. I am also expecting (Katie is 20 weeks pregnant) so its a perfect set-up. It means I get time to work on my international business as well. I have had a very successful year and the opportunities in China are growing. This year I set up Albany Portfolio Management’s Wine investment China Joint Venture, and I am currently working various other projects, so I’ve a lot happening! I’m fascinated by the Shaolin Temple Warrior that your husband is, can you tell me more, I’m visualising Kill Bill scenarios! My husband struggled at school and so his parents tried him at Kung Fu. He trained full time for 9 years and then auditioned successfully for entrance into the Temple. He’s an average guy with no ego, yet when he demonstrates his skill is amazing. Warriors are phenomenal. He’s not competitive, but he loves what he does and he’s evidently very gifted physically. The combination of attributes he has, his dedication and absolute commitment to Kungfu is awe-inspiring. The inner peace he has gained through his exceptional mastery of Kungfu is “Zen”, and it allows him to connect spiritually to everything. What’s happening this year for you all besides a new addition to your family? Pull it all together and make the shift, with 3 year old Alex, to China. We want to educate our children there. It makes sense. I lived in China for 7 years on and off after I graduated in ‘94 from Leeds University with a degree in Chinese & Economics so I am well-heeled. It wont be a massive transition. Besides I am already back and forth to China regularly with the businesses I set up. So I am as poised as anyone, and we’re ready!
