Each bat has its own distinct look. The game is so popular that fashionable Brazilians invest almost as much time in choosing the ideal bat and ball as they do in perfecting their game. Psychic & sPiritualist “The only thing you can change about the past is how you feel. By making the right connection, you can understand where you have come from and how you can shape your journey to a better future.” George has performed readings for royalty, celebrities and entrepreneurs from all over the world, who have been astounded and empowered by their experience, as the experience is a combination of Spiritual guidance, ancient healing, and psychic insight, George will perform one to one or telephone readings. I was born in London Hospital in 1970 and was raised in East London, so I am an “East ender”; my Mum established a good reputation as a spiritualist, she was a specialist in palm, tea leaves and Tarot readings, it was a family tradition since the late 1800’s. Our house always had a spiritual energy flowing with incense, candles and readings were happening everyday. At 12 years old, I would practise 3 card Tarot readings with clients who were waiting there turn to see my Mother. I also developed a passion for music, my Father was a musician and I started to play drums at Greek weddings and parties from the age of 13. When I turned 17 I worked in the Greek Taverna “plate smashing scene”, I had an opportunity to practice my music and also my readings for different people. I became very popular with my readings and people would come back, not to smash plates but to have a reading.
On my 21st Birthday I launched on exclusive west London night clubs as a clairvoyant where I would read for celebrities, VIP’s and many other interesting people. In 1997 I had a serious operation. This created a crisis in my life where I had to draw deeply on my spiritual resources. I came through this fire committed to sharing my insights and had to work from home giving online readings during recovery. I was able to support an increasing number of people through their own journeys by using the spiritual knowledge that ran richly through my family’s history. The need for this operation and my subsequent journey of self-discovery also inspired me to focus on healing techniques. I rekindled an ancient colour therapy to enable aura, chakra balance and self connection. These techniques helped me to swiftly heal psychologically and physically, changing my life for the better. I now apply what I have learned from this experience to help others. Many people have been astounded with the results achieved. Although readings are important; spiritual guidance and self connection are essential! To become a practising psychic and a spiritualist is a responsibility that will take many years of dedication. For me it is has become a way of life.

DUTY, RESPONSIBILITY, AND PROTOCOL ARE VERY MUCH A PART OF THEIR LIVES NOW, BUT DURING THEIR FIRST YEAR OF MARRIED LIFE, THEIR INTERESTS HAVEN’T BEEN FORGOTTEN EITHER. BOTH WILLIAM AND KATE ENJOY THE OUTDOORS AND VARIOUS SPORTS, AND DURING THEIR FIRST OVERSEAS TOUR IN CANADA, WERE ABLE TO UNDERTAKE SOME LESS FORMAL, MORE ACTIVE ENGAGEMENTS, INCLUDING CANOEING, DRAGON BOAT RACING, COOKOUTS, AND CAMPFIRES. 22 SCENE
Kate, or HRH the Duchess of Cambridge as she is now known, is the first ‘non-royal ’ to marry into the Royal Family since the Queen Mother, although her life hasn’t exactly been standard. The Duchess of Cambridge was born in Berkshire in 1982, and was christened Catherine Elizabeth Middleton at a local Church. Kate spent her early childhood in Amman, Jordan, where her father was working, before returning to England and starting school. Well educated, she spent time at St Andrew’s School in Pangbourne, Marlborough College in Wiltshire, and later went on to study for a History of Art degree at St Andrew’s University Scotland. It was here her life was to change forever. The eldest daughter of self-made millionaires Michael and Carole Middleton was famously spotted modelling at a university fashion show by Prince William. Confirmed as a couple after being spotted skiing and sharing a kiss together in the Swiss Alps, the now fully fledged Royal couple have generated countless column inches ever since, some of which have a local connection. There was a story of another Miss Middleton being selected as Herne Bay Carnival Queen in 2011, and widespread, yet credible rumours, surrounding the wine chosen for one of their private Royal Wedding receptions. The newlyweds wanted to uphold a British theme throughout their Royal wedding, and reportedly chose a wine from the Chapel Down Vineyards in Kent, one of the UK’s biggest wine producers. Such stories are perhaps quite interesting by-products of being in the public eye, although they are somewhat eclipsed by the headlines Kate has generated for her style, particularly after her engagement to Prince William in 2010, and their wedding, watched by more than 24 million UK viewers alone, in 2011. The Duchess of Cambridge is widely considered as both a follower of fashion, and as she is in the public eye, a style icon too. Whichever title you favour, she had made an impact on the fashion world, with her appropriate choices, SCENE 23
which often come from her favourite designer high street stores. Items from Reiss, Issa, Zara, and LK Bennett have all sold out, after Kate has been pictured wearing them, and there have even been reports of increased interest in some fashion stores, simply because Kate has visited, or bought items. Kate as an individual may be noticed for her poise, elegance, and style, but what about William and Kate as a couple? They are currently spending much of their married life off the beaten track, in a rented farmhouse in Anglesey in Wales, where the Duke of Cambridge is serving as an RAF search and rescue helicopter Pilot. In keeping with their down to earth natures, they have shunned offers of staff, and, while they can at least, are enjoying the chance to cook, clean, and shop. They have been keen to enjoy as much privacy as possible, while William Wales, as he is known in the RAF, continues his career, and before they both take on increased responsibilities as fully working members of the Royal Family. This tour was taken on the Queen’s behalf, as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and not only showed off the Best of Canada as a tourist destination, but gave the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge the opportunity to undertake Royal Duties in both a relaxed and more formal fashion. As the nation reflects on the couple’s successful overseas tour, and their first year of married life,
people will also remember Kate’s first solo steps as a working Royal, and her desire to support the Royal Family’s role in highlighting important charitable causes. Kate is now Patron or Royal Patron of Action on Addiction, East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH), The Art Room, and The National Portrait Gallery. Action on Addiction and EACH were chosen to reflect Kate’s interest in supporting people in need, while The Art Room, which used art as therapy to build self-esteem and confidence in Children, and the National Portrait Gallery, reflect her continuing interest in art. A small number of patronages, that reflect the Duchess of Cambridge’s interests, have played a key part in easing her into a Royal working life, particularly as she has undertaken solo engagements while William has been away with the RAF. Away from the public eyes, and camera lenses, Kate has still found time to sit back, relax, and catch up on television, and there’s one show she has never missed an episode of. During a visit to Alderhey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, this Valentine’s Day, during a conversation with the children, she admitted to liking ‘The Only Way Is Essex’. As Her Royal Highness is Patron of EACH, (who work and organise fundraising events in Essex, as well as Suffolk), perhaps one day a Royal visit will show her what Essex is really all about! The best of Essex will have to wait however, as this summer the Duchess of Cambridge, her husband, and Prince Harry will no doubt be relishing their roles as Official Ambassadors of Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Just as Kate will help inspire the nation to celebrate the best of British Sport, she will no doubt also help inspire and develop a new era for the Royal Family.

Chingford - 2012
Words by Jo Fraser
CHINGFORD SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN SETTLED IN LATE SAXON TIMES, ALTHOUGH IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE DOOMSDAY SURVEY OF 1086 THAT WE HAVE REAL EVIDENCE OF ITS EXISTENCE. IT WAS LITTLE MORE THAN A SMALL VILLAGE UNTIL AFTER THE RAILWAY CAME IN 1873. THIS BROUGHT MANY VISITORS FROM THE EAST END OF LONDON TO ENJOY THE DELIGHTS OF EPPING FOREST, FOLLOWED BY THOSE MOVING TO THE TOWN WHERE COMMUTING TO THE CITY BECAME EASY. FROM THAT TIME ON THE PACE OF CHANGE IN CHINGFORD ACCELERATED; THE LANDS AND THE FARMS OF THE OLD MANORS WERE SOLD OFF FOR HOUSING AND SHOPS LEAVING ONLY A FEW GREEN SPACES. NORTH CHINGFORD TODAY IS AN EVER MORE POPULAR PLACE TO LIVE AND VISIT WITH THE OPEN SPACES OF EPPING FOREST AND THE HISTORIC QUEEN ELIZABETH HUNTING LODGE ALL ADD TO ITS APPEAL. AS FAR AS LEISURE ACTIVITIES ARE CONCERNED, THERE ARE SEVERAL LOCAL GOLF COURSES, EQUESTRIAN FACILITIES, TENNIS CLUBS AND SAILING ON THE KING GEORGE RESERVOIR. STATION ROAD, NORTH CHINGFORD’S HIGH STREET, BOASTS OF A VARIETY OF QUALITY RESTAURANTS, INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES AND SHOPS. FROM THE TRAIN STATION RIGHT ALONG THE HIGH ROAD TO THE GREEN, THERE’S A GREAT MIX OF BOUTIQUES, BARS, EATERIES, SALONS AND MUCH MORE BESIDES, PROVIDING LOCALS AND VISITORS TO THE AREA WITH PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING THEY’RE AFTER.

SILK MINNOW
Silk Minnow is a brand new boutique in North Chingford’s Village Arcade offering a gorgeous selection of children’s designer clothes from 0-3 years. Owners Danielle and Francesca, both mothers of young children, wanted to focus on clothing that is stylish, high quality and most importantly affordable. They thought long and hard about the brands that would complement their Silk Minnow image. From their French range Week End á la Mer to the artist turned children’s clothing designer Emma Levine and Italian classic brand Coccodè, they present a fresh, trendy and diverse approach to young children’s fashion. New to the boutique for Spring/Summer 2012 are Organics for Kids and Powell Craft. Silk Minnow also stocks footwear for stylish tootsies from Spanish brand Petit Shoes. BOTOX ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT Gillian Gage has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and has always had a great passion for the beauty industry. She specialises in Anti-wrinkle treatments (Botox), Restylane Dermal Fillers and Medical Skin Peels at Tranquility Salon in South Woodford. Botox treatment is simple, quick and safe, however if you have not had treatment before, understandably you can feel a little nervous the first time. When you arrive at Tranquility you are immediately put at ease and asked to complete a medical history sheet. This is to ensure that Gillian is made aware of any medical conditions which could rule out Botox treatment. At the initial free consultation, Gillian discusses clients’ expectations for the treatment to understand what results you hope to achieve. She explains how the treatment will help and discusses the potential side effects. Generally Botox works well for lines and wrinkles in the upper face caused by facial expressions and muscle over activity such as in frown lines, forehead wrinkles

Q: I have noticed I have now developed sagging skin around my lower face and generally look more tired. Is there any treatment that could help without having to resort to a facelift?

A: The short answer is yes. Over the years, the face begins to lose collagen and elastin, which both contribute to sagging facial features. The loss of facial volume and elasticity also lead to the formation of wrinkles, creases and folds, all of which ages the appearance of the face. The most popular treatment in the clinic these days is the PURE face lift which is a bespoke treatment depending on what the client is trying to achieve. Each face is different and will require a different combination of treatments, which will be discussed between the aesthetician and the client. For those looking to have treatments to restore fullness and help to reduce fine lines a course of the ultimate liquid facelift RESTYLANE VITAL does the job nicely, with a course of 3 treatments over a 3 month period which can last up to a year. For those having problems with deep frown lines or troublesome crow’s feet, carefully placed BOTOX can undo years giving a fresher and more youthful appearance. Those hoping to avoid the dreaded needle may want to trial the new THERMOPEEL which involves a 1 hour facial using special products which are pushed through the skin without the use of any needles or pain while a special current helps to tighten up the skin around the eyes, jowls and cheeks resulting in a more lifted and younger face.

RENTING IS THE NEW WAY TO WEAR DESIGNER - MARIANNA DAVIS REPORTS.
T
here’s no denying it. One of the most exciting things (if not the most exciting thing) about going to an event is the outfit. Thinking about it, planning it, shopping for it, trying it on; an outfit is a creative expression of ourselves, a preview of our personalities if you like. Dressing is a very personal thing and can be great fun but it can also be very expensive. That’s before you’ve even contemplated the all important bag: the finishing touch which holds your look together. But oh, does something so small and compact (I’m thinking clutch) really have to cost more than the outfit and the shoes put together? The answer is no. A certain few felt our pain, heard our grumbles and have provided us with a solution: The Borrowers Club (www.theborrowersclub.com). A business made for bag lovers that don’t possess the bag budget. The name says it all but just in case you haven’t quite caught on yet, at The Borrowers Club, you can rent one of latest ‘IT’ bags at accessible prices! Genious. In our current economic climate, expensive is not a word in most people’s vocabulary. All this scrimping and saving has meant that we must either possess the creative flare of Carrie Bradshaw’s stylist-not to mention the body to go with it-or quite simply play it safe. Now for the fashionistas out there, safe is not an option or definitely
not an appealing one anyway. But we all know that keeping up with the latest trends means spending all if not more than the latest pay check. So as our money belts have been tightened we have sensibly opted for the practical rather than the daring. Last season’s Kate Middleton-has-bored-the-trendto-death nude peep toes have begrudgingly been favoured over the citrus yellow mules ‘because they’ll go with more’. Dreams of a designer statement outfit that would get heads turning will have to be shelved for another time as will meeting your future husband. Well, let’s not be dramatic here. A snog. Cue the cunningly clever entrepreneurs who have jumped over this economic hurdle and landed right into a cracking business idea. Renting your outfit. Of course, I hear you all cry with relief. After all, we rent houses because we can’t afford the deposit to buy one so why not outfits? It makes perfect economical sense. Not only can we avoid huge spending, we can also avoid the same safe-but-dull outfits to see us through party season. No condescending ‘Oh I remember that dress: you wore it last year’ comments for us, thank you very much! Girl Meets Dress (www.girlmeetsdress.com) and Wish Want Wear (www.wishwantwear.com) are
just two of these companies offering fantastic outfits for any occasion, at very low prices. Whether you fancy yourself in a colourful Missoni number or perhaps a more demure See by Chloe design, you can bet you’ll find something you like here. But it’s not just the dress/jumpsuit/tailored short suit that has centre stage these days. Accessories are playing a much larger role in the glamour steaks and can really take an outfit from simple to sublime. And because they aren’t restricted to certain body shapes (Lara Stone’s off the top of my head), you can be as garish or subtle as your mood takes you! At The Borrowers Club (www. theborrowersclub.com) rentals start from £35 for a 5 day period and signing up is free! Yes, dreams of parading around with that designer bag in tow can now be a reality. Whether you’re looking for a fun clutch to match your wedding outfit or you just fancy showing off an oversized Louis Vuitton for a few days, the choice is yours! With this new funds-friendly concept, planning an outfit is cheap and cheerful. Just make sure you stay clear of the prize boozer with unsteady feet. Red wine stains never were a good look.. SCENE 37

aving grown up in the far east where we had ample sunlight, I could always tell the newly arrived expats, or visitors from back home. They usually had snow white skin and wore the most wrinkled linen clothes I had ever seen. They looked as if they slept in them, which they probably did on the overnight flight. As we possessed an iron and knew how to use it, I incorrectly assumed other people did too.
38 SCENE
Fast forward two decades, and we now hardly see anyone wearing linen except the burly chap who is wearing the drawstring trousers and the Ibiza drinking contest T-shirt looking like a rejected extra from a 1970s Kung Fu film. It doesn’t need to be this way. Linen is the quintessential summer fabric. Nothing says summer, sunshine and warm weather like a linen item of clothing. Linen also creases, that is the nature
of linen. Some call it annoying, others beautiful. It can be kept in moderation by buying items made of linen blended with cotton, silk or mohair. This mitigates some of linen’s tendency to crease, but does not distract from the look. Having an item that is washable like a shirt or our boxer shorts, works well in linen because the items can be easily ironed and the heat not only removes creases, it helps give a luxurious softness over time as well. I would not recommend a light linen blazer as an everyday jacket, unless one takes meticulous care and does not move in it. If it is ironed too often and incorrectly, it has a tendency to go shiny. Worse still are non-washable linen trousers, which go from beautiful to the trousers of a vagabond in one long day. Light colours on non-washable items, like a white linen suit, are also a no no and should be kept for the movies. It is going to get as dirty as any other colour, one just sees the dirt more easily, and can’t get rid of it. Don’t get me wrong, I love linen. I love linen boxer shorts that just get softer and more decadent after each washing, I adore linen polos and shirts that breathe and let me feel the breeze through the fabric. I know I am on vacation when I wear linen shirts a few days in a row, it brings a smile to my face. My cotton and linen jeans sell out every year. I love the texture, the touch, the colour – the subtle shades of earth, sky and sea. For me linen is summer. I almost wear my caramel coloured linen, wool and silk blazer every day in summer. Recently a client for whom I had made such a blazer came by to thank me for it four years later. He said he had stopped counting the number of compliments he had received for wearing it, not only because it fit him the way it should, but because it looked like linen, felt like linen but without any of the fabric’s drawbacks. To each their own, just no drawstring kung fu trousers please.

or the past few years, most of those people will have walked by seeing nothing more than a mass of scaffolding and billboards, unaware of the gargantuan project that this constructional façade conceals. Behind all the metal and walkways lies The London Hippodrome. From its grand beginnings over a century ago as a Victorian circus and cabaret, through to becoming the quintessential Motown venue, ‘Talk of the Town’, and even a Peter Stringfellows nightclub - the venue has played host to such influential artists as Charlie Chaplin, The Great Houdini, Diana Ross and Cliff Richard. In its latest reincarnation, this iconic building will be

transformed into the largest casino in Europe. Last month, Scene Magazine had the pleasure of taking an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the project; planned to be completed by the end of June this year. The scale of the redevelopment is absolutely huge. The old theatre is to be transformed into a 99,000 square foot leviathan of entertainment, featuring three floors of gaming, a fully decked out stage for theatrical and musical performances, a huge selection of private rooms for hire, a 200 capacity brasserie restaurant, and no less than four cocktail bars, serving drinks by expert mixologist, Tony Conigliaro.
SCENE CATCHES UP WITH LEILANI DOWDING FACE OF THE HIPPODROME’S POKER SITE. Open 24 hours a day, and serving drinks from between 10am and 5:30am, the casino is set to become the centrepiece of West End adult leisure. Avid gamers can expect an incredibly diverse choice, from the classic offerings of roulette, poker blackjack and slot machines, to a whole floor dedicated to electronic gaming. George Constantinou, Head of Online Gaming who kindly showed us round, emphasised the importance of catering for the local Chinese community. He commented, “Not only will the casino dedicate the entire bottom floor to Chinese gaming, but the building will also host a new Chinese community centre.” He also spoke of the importance of the online market; indeed, The Hippodrome will lead the way in an innovative process of streaming the action from the main gaming floor live to its online site, where users will be able to bet in real time, and even cash in the money that they win on the web in person at the Casino itself. George hopes that the area situated at the top of the building, grandly named ‘At The Gods’, will be “the most spectacular place to play
poker in the world” - and it’s easy to see why. Standing on the balcony, there is an awe-inspiring view four stories down to the main gaming floor. When we visited, the insides of the building were still very much taking shape; even so, it was already possible to appreciate the true majesty of the place, as well as the effort that has gone into the casino’s design, the essence of which is a seamless and elegant blend of the classic with the contemporary. Whilst stripping back the interior to the original 1920s design by the architect, Frank Matcham, there will also feature impressive illuminated walkways and, with another nod to the building’s great history, huge space-age spheres of classic theatre lights. It’s hard to see how the Hippodrome Casino will not be a success. The passion, vision and expertise behind the project is absolutely unrivalled and the intelligence and quality of the design is sure to impress the crowds. When the casino opens this year, Leicester Square’s reputation as one of the world’s most auspicious entertainment destinations will no doubt be cemented in history.

ROLL LIKE A ROYAL
“FROM LAUNCH IN 2003, THE ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM QUICKLY ESTABLISHED A REPUTATION AT THE VERY PINNACLE OF AUTOMOTIVE EXCELLENCE, A REPUTATION THAT HAS BEEN REINFORCED BY THE INTRODUCTION OF OUTSTANDING MODEL DERIVATIVES LIKE THE PHANTOM DROPHEAD COUPÉ AND PHANTOM COUPÉ.”
T
hese beautiful cars are timeless in their appeal, but in the modern world technology moves rapidly and Rolls-Royce cannot afford to stand still. So they have embraced that famous maxim of their founding forefather Sir Henry Royce who, a century ago, encouraged his teams to take the best that exists and to make it better. Now Rolls-Royce proudly presents Phantom Series II a family of ultra-luxurious cars that have been thoughtfully updated with the introduction of cutting-edge technologies, enhancements to an already peerless drivetrain and improvements in connectivity that reflect the new world in which we live. The launch of the Rolls-Royce Phantom on 1st January 2003 was much more than the reveal of a new ultra-luxury car; it signalled the 21st Century renaissance of the world’s most famous luxury automobile brand and the first glimpse of a masterpiece that quickly

established itself at the pinnacle of automotive excellence. From launch, the Rolls-Royce Phantom proved itself a worthy recipient of the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. From Pantheon grille to long rear overhang, the design was clearly a Rolls-Royce. Every angle revealed a bold yet elegant car with road presence that was second to none. For such an imposing car, Phantom surprised drivers with its agility and precision in motion while its ride was described by the company at the time as ‘designed to lower the pulse’. The magnificently sublime ride, famed through model generations, had returned and waftability re-affirmed itself in the company lexicon. At the car’s core lay a groundbreaking, lightweight aluminium space-frame with power supplied by a sophisticated, directinjection V12 engine, married to a six-speed auto gearbox. And complementing this excellence
in engineering was Phantom’s beautiful interior, presenting handstitched sumptuous leathers, fine veneers and exquisite detailing, a combination that marked the car as something uniquely special. Phantom’s striking and modern front end best encapsulates the essence of changes that lie beneath, with re-styled bumpers and rectangular light apertures that frame full-LED light clusters. These allow the integration of new technologies like curve light functionality, where headlamp beams are reflected in the direction of travel to provide greater illumination of the road ahead when cornering. And adaptive headlamps, where light patterns change automatically and - of course effortlessly in response to different driving speeds. Phantom’s already sublime drivetrain has also been enhanced. The addition of a new 8-speed automatic gearbox and rear differential perfectly complement the V12 direct injection engine,
improving exemplary dynamics, as well as the famous Rolls-Royce promise of a magic carpet ride. Fuel consumption improves by 10 percent on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions fall from 385 to 347g/km as a consequence (388 to 349 for Phantom Extended Wheelbase).

Sardinian Supper Words by Jo Fraser
I
l Bacio Ristorante and Pizzeria has recently opened at the top of Queens Road in Buckhurst Hill. It is the latest branch of the Italian and Sardinian fusion restaurant to open by owner Luigi Funedda who already has established and successful local neighbourhood restaurants in Stoke Newington and Highbury. Since its opening last month, it has been packed out with hungry diners eager to sample the authentic fare in tratorria-style surroundings. As soon as you walk into the restaurant via the pretty front patio you feel as though you have been transported to a warm and sunny spot in southern Italy. The bijou room is bright and colourful; exposed brickwork, stripped and white-washed wood flooring, fireplaces and simple wooden tables and chairs create the effect of a rustic Sardinian eatery. It’s the eclectic artwork though which really adds a burst of vibrant
colour to the restaurant. A multitude of canvases and prints adorn the walls, each one different but all fun and eye-catching. I dined with a friend on a busy Thursday evening. We were seated at a table towards the back of the room, looking out on the small rear terrace, accessed through French windows. The room was already filled with a mix of larger groups and smaller tables of two and four diners when we arrived for our 7.30pm booking. We were given a basket of freshly baked, thin and crispy bread and the wine list to peruse which comprised solely of Italian and Sardinian varieties. Entry price is a reasonable £15.00 for the House white and red wines. We were recommended a Sardinian bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from “Luigi’s Special Selection”. Il Bacio’s menu comprises a comprehensive selection SCENE 47
of Antipasti, Primi, Insalate, Secondi and Pizzas. Sardinian specialities such as “Bavette Scoglio”: Spaghetti style pasta served with shellfish in a cherry tomato sauce and “Cervo alla Sarda”: Grilled Venison, garlic, parsley, mushrooms and Canonnau wine, sit amongst more traditional Italian favourites including Pollo Milanese and homemade lasagne. A chalkboard at the front of the restaurant offers daily changing specialities. On the night we dined, options included sirloin steak served simply with rocket and a goat casserole for the more adventurous! Roast Suckling Pig, another Sardinian dish, also features regularly on the specials board. Our feast began with the Antipasto Sardo Misto platter for two. A wooden board arrived at our table featuring a generous selection of Sardinian sausage, Parma ham, olives, artichoke, mushrooms and chunks of Pecorino cheese, all laying atop more of the thin crispy bread. The platter was fresh and flavoursome. Next up was our “Primi” course of Lobster Ravioli: Three large and perfectly cooked ravioli parcels filled with the most delicious lobster meat, served in a rich creamy tomato sauce and fresh basil leaves. I have never tasted pasta so good and my dining partner agreed. I could’ve eaten more but wanted to save my appetite for the following course. Luigi recommended the sea bass for our “Secondi” (main) course and brought up not one but two whole sea bass to showcase the different cooking methods, flavours and options available at Il Bacio. Our first sea bass had been baked whole in a sea salt crust. The fish was infused with flavours from the sea and simply garnished with lemon slices. Our waiter expertly removed the salt crust and filleted the fish at our table, the translucent fish falling away in tender chunks from the bone. The other one had been baked in foil with cherry tomatoes, wine, slices of fresh garlic and herbs. The foiled fish was again brought to the table and opened to reveal a perfectly cooked dish bursting
with colour and with fantastic aromas escaping from the steaming parcel. This too was filleted for us and both dishes were served with a generous portion of rosemary roasted potatoes and green vegetables. Both fish dishes were cooked to absolute perfection – moist, melting in the mouth and packed full of flavour. A glass of rose wine suggested by our waiter, matched the fish well. A continuous stream of meat, fish, pasta and pizza dishes were brought from the open kitchen at Il Bacio to feed the diners, each one looking more appetising than the last! Despite our fullness from the previous three courses, we couldn’t end our meal without tasting one of their homemade desserts and opted for the hot chocolate soufflé, served with vanilla ice-cream. To finish our thoroughly enjoyable meal we had coffee and a complimentary shot of Limoncello. This is a fun place to eat. It’s busy, buzzy, lively, family friendly, good value and entirely authentic. Luigi and his experienced team of staff are passionate about their food and passionate too about ensuring their customers enjoy the experience. Il Bacio was born with the idea to bring to London, and now Essex, traditional Italian cuisine, and in particular the mesmerising flavours of the beautiful island of Sardinia and this has certainly been achieved here. When you step into Il Bacio, you are stepping into a little piece of Sardinia and into the Sardinian’s way of life. Il Bacio, 182 Queens Road, Buckhurst Hill, Essex IG9 5BD 020 8505 7077. Open daily.

CREATING YOUR PERFECThaven
I
t is said that the garden should be regarded as an extension of the home, and – like the rest of the property should be re-designed and adapted to suit the ever changing needs of your family and lifestyle. However, while most of us are happy to redecorate the home with a fresh lick of paint here and there, when was the last time you actually looked out of the back door and assessed the practicality or appeal of your garden? Is it inviting, do you want to spend time out there? A lot of the time, the answer is no...
No matter how big or small, this oftenneglected space can be easily adapted to accommodate the growing needs of your family or lifestyle in a way that can completely transform the way that you live. The changes you make can be as simple as planting a few pots and laying a new turf to bring life and colour back to a long forgotten outdoor space, adding new steps and a terrace to allow easier access to a formally difficult to reach lawn or installing a purpose built play area for the children to enjoy! ‘Russell & Son Landscaping Limited is a family run business based in Essex. Other the past decade they have built up an impressive reputation in garden design and now have an extensive client base, which expands throughout Essex and beyond.’ It’s very important to us that we ensure our customers get 110% satisfaction from every job we work on and seeing customers so thrilled with their final outcome is an amazing feeling that we thrive on. We specialise in our tailor-made service. The first step involves sitting down at the beginning and talking to the customer one on one to ensure we cover every part of the transformation 54 SCENE
we’re about to begin and ensuring every request is noted and that the customer is confident in their choices. The next step is to plan out what the dream garden is going to look like. Here we create a Birdseye view and architectural plan to show the customer exactly what’s going to happen. This helps give the client a clearer perspective on the final outcome and of course is free of charge. We pride ourselves in our vast range of available garden furniture, architectural features and planting. One of our specialities is decking, whether it’s a brand new installation that you’re after or your present decking area needs to be revamped and restored, we can help you. We ensure that all our plants are sourced from only the finest plant suppliers in Europe and that they are of the highest quality possible! Planting to us is seen as a form of art....
It’s all about individuality! None of our gardens are the same! We can create you a garden that is one-off and built entirely around your taste. So whether you’re looking for a warm Moroccan style garden with splashes of colour, moody lighting, abstract planting and intricate lanterns or if you’re more of a traditionalist craving a floral filled ‘English Meadow Escape’ than we can achieve that for you. After Completion... Maintenance contracts are available once your haven is finally complete. Our team specialise in keeping your garden looking perfect and under control so that’s one thing less for you to worry about! We also offer fittings of irrigation systems for the busier clients ensuring your plants are always happy. Other Projects... AROUND THE HOUSES WE BRING YOU THIS MONTH’S LATEST PROPERTY MARKET NEWS AND VIEWS IN ESSEX
Property SCENE with Hayley Hunt
No matter what the so-called pundits say, this part of Essex continues to buck the house price trend as demand for certain properties outstrips supply. As a consequence, property values have held up, especially in the luxury apartment market, driven by those who are now downsizing and demanding spacious apartments to replace the large houses to which they have become accustomed. A very pronounced trend in this sector is the refurbishment of large, often historic buildings, which sit in beautiful grounds, offering all the trappings of a large country estate, but with all the amenities of modern-day living at close hand and none of the onerous maintenance responsibilities.
A RISE IS ON THE HORIZON
The first green shoots of recovery have been seen in some prime residential markets beyond London which recorded their first quarterly price rise in a year, according to Savills research. Growth is mainly confined to the South East where values rose by 1.5 per cent, and in the East there has also been a positive 0.3% rise.
Repton Park, where I live with my own family and where I have been entrusted by my neighbour clients with many sales and lettings, is a prime example of this phenomenon. Formerly Claybury hospital, parts of the development date back to the 1890s and remain an important architectural landmark. The beautiful Victorian facades, which lie at the heart of Repton’s 235 acres of parkland and ancient woodland, sit alongside beautifully constructed new build properties, offering a tranquil sanctuary in the midst of a vibrant local community. In a similar vein is Gaynes Park Mansions in Coopersale, Epping, one of the most breathtaking developments that my company is both privileged and excited to represent. This top end development of just seven ‘out-of-this-world’ apartments on an estate that dates back to 1792, is the ultimate restoration of our heritage, offering the ‘greenest’ of environmental credentials in a most historic setting. Privileged indeed will be the seven owners who take up residence in these sumptuous and spectacular surroundings. 20 Apr-20 May A mountain of work coming in, of which you must be ready at all times to receive and to work for. It will help to aid you in these difficult times and enable you to forge ahead on a new path of activity not known before. You are now emerging into a new and more profitable life. You will see it and trust it.
23 Oct-21 Nov You must begin in earnest to change your life for the better. A new planetary impulse will see you take the chance of which there will be no regrets, only a loving and peaceful existence. It is high time you did it, as you have been deliberating for far too long now. Take this golden opportunity while it still exists. It won’t be there for long.

Begin to see life as if you are a part of it and not separate from it. You have come a long way and there is more to satisfy you out there.

21 Jun-22 Jul Every time you think you have won, another problem seems to rear its ugly head around you. Is there no rest from this mayhem and turmoil? Look at life in another way. By focussing on this problem you are saved, as you are able to deal with it and grow with confidence. All is a learning curve for you, something you have not yet thought about.
22 Dec-19 Jan You have come a long way in your life and your career. This now is the joy of the wisdom that you have created to forge ahead with new impetus and a new pulse to secure everything you hold most dear and sacred. Nothing will ever leave you or be taken away from you again. This you can feel confident about and take comfort in that fact.

23 Jul-22 Aug What was once an impossible dream is well on course to becoming a true reality. Notice how the wind of change is all around you. You are feeling the impetus to go forwards as never before. Seek out that job application and begin to see a turnaround of events, which will amaze you as never before. It really is in your stars to make that difference.
20 Jan-18 Feb To create a better future for yourself, you have to come to terms with the past and finally let that part of your life go. There were trying times, but the rest is beautiful with much hope and promise. You deserve a better part of that life coming to you. Don’t stop that progress. Leave the past and know a better future is there for you.

23 Aug-22 Sep Now it is make or break time. You are headed for a fall unless you sort out your finances, which are about to topple over. Once you have grasped the source of the problem you will deal with it swiftly and efficiently, leaving you in a more stable position than when you first started. Begin to see matters more clearly so you can make that difference.
19 Feb-20 Mar All that you ever wished for is there before you. See yourself as great and see how others acknowledge that greatness, not in the usual way of notoriety that is already there for you, but to a higher level of achievement that few can aspire to. These natural gifts cannot be learnt. They are acquired through individual progress at a time that has been allocated for you.

23 Sep-22 Oct A new spectrum of light, which will help you focus on what is right and important in your life. It is high time you moved on and out and go your separate ways. You have been living a drift wood sort of life. Now you can at last make a difference to yourself and be a part of this world, not as a separate entity.
21 Mar-19 Apr Time to reflect, not on your future, but on what you can do today for yourself and others – there is not much time to lose and so an itinerary of what is necessary and what must be put right is so important to give you that necessary peace of mind, which has not been there for a long time. You owe it to yourself.
SCENE 65
MY SCENE SCENE CATCHES UP WITH MICHAEL COPP, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF WOODFORD GREEN’S DREAM BEDROOM & KITCHEN DESIGNS AND ONE OF THIS YEAR’S TOP 16 CANDIDATES ON THE APPRENTICE. MICHAEL SHARES HIS EXPERIENCES WITH US AND TELLS US WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO APPEAR ON THE SHOW.
What inspired you to apply for The Apprentice? I’m a business man and I knew it was a good business opportunity and a platform to meet Lord Sugar and open doors. How did you feel when you found out you had mad the cut and were in the final 16? I was very proud to make the show and the top 16. I think anyone that made it that far should be really proud of themselves. Were you apprehensive about being on TV and did you find the cameras constantly there made you nervous? At first the cameras are a bit off putting but it is such a good business opportunity and it’s so chaotic that you are rushing around and focusing and you forget the cameras are there. Unfortunately you were the first man to be ‘fired’ and leave the show, how did that make you feel? I was gutted to be out. I had gastric flu during the filming which I think affected my performance. I would have liked the chance to show more of what I am capable of. Did you get on well with the other candidates? I got on with everyone. I’m the sort
Michael Copp of person that gets on with most people. I didn’t really get the chance to get to know the girls that well as I barely worked with them. Everyone seemed really nice though. If you had to pick, in your opinion, who would you like to see win based on your time with the other candidates? I’m not sure about the girls as like I said I didn’t really get the chance to see them perform. Out of the guys I have to say Nick, Tom or Ricky. Ricky comes across as tough and you have to be in the boardroom, he’s a really nice bloke though. What have you taken away from your time on The Apprentice? I don’t think I was there long enough for it to change my business practice or for me to learn new ways of doing things from the others. It was an amazing experience though and I have taken away new business friends. What advice would you give to someone wanting to apply for The Apprentice next season? You have to be tough and prepared to fight your corner and in the boardroom. Having met Lord Sugar is he what you were expecting and truly like the man we see on TV? Yes he is. He is just like you see on the tele. Occasionally he cracks a few jokes. He really is what you see is what you get type of man. He’s very straight talking. Karen and Nick, the eyes and ears of the show, what are they like? They don’t miss a trick! They report absolutely everything back. They

are friendly but firm. Tell me more about you and how you started your business? I left school at 15 and worked in motorbike mechanics. Then I got involved in the engineering and manufacturing of trains. This involved carpentry aspects and that lead me to the kitchen and bathroom business. I started up on my own and worked out of a van. Then I opened my business in 2003. Your business is well established as you said. What services do you offer? We supply, design and fit kitchens and bathrooms, revamp oak designs and often work on large contracts. A large amount of our business comes from recommendations. We are launching a new garden product at the end of the year. We are also now on Facebook and Twitter. My Twitter is Michael_Copp and the Facebook page is Dream-Bedroom-KitchenDesigns. We also have our own website www.dbkdesigns.co.uk. What’s next for you this year? I’ll carry on with my business and move the company forward. Education is a large part of my life as I’m dyslexic. I would love to get involved in a charity that helps kids deal with these issues as I have been there and I can relate.
