SMILES WITH GRACE’ WALk TO GREAT ORMOND STREET RAISES £11,000!

‘Smiles with Grace’ is a new charity formed by a teenager in remission from a brain tumour to help all sick young people; through project funding, research and education. The event took place Sat 3rd September, with 80 people taking part

in an 18km Charity Walk, from Grace Boxall’s home in Buckhurst Hill to Great Ormond Street Hospital; the journey Grace made for that initial emergency operation back in 2007 when she was just 10 years old. To date over £11,000 has been raised.

On Saturday, 17th September, MammaLina Italian Delicatessen in Buckhurst Hill, 176c Queens Road, concluded the summer and welcomed autumn in with one of their highly popular and successful Italian

After storming on to the British pop scene more than two years ago aged just 18, the career of beautiful Victoria Louise “Pixie” Lott has grown from strength to strength. With her distinctive voice and infectious sounds it was evident this Essex teen was going to make an impact on the music industry and, with three number one hits under her belt, a double platinum debut album and an array of awards, the starlet has well and truly delivered. Little Lott started singing in her church school in Kent and at the tender age of five attended the Italia Conti Associates Saturday school in Chislehurst. The talented youngster was then awarded a scholarship aged 11 at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Leaving her Kent home for Essex in her early teen years, Lott began hitting the West End stage in productions including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and, as Louisa Von Trapp in BBC One’s Celebrate the Sound of Music. Signing with Island Def Jam Music Group aged just 15, Lott then found herself in the middle of a bidding war which resulted in the bubbly teenager securing a deal with Mercury Records. The budding songwriter also formed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing while in the midst of writing and recording tracks for her debut album, Turn It Up. Cheeky tune, Mamma Do, flooded the sound waves in the summer of 2009 and soared straight to the top of the charts. Lingering in the Top 40 for weeks, Lott’s Christina Aguilerastyle vocals, charming smile and sexy yet cheeky attitude had taken the British music industry by storm. When you turn on the radio and hear Lott’s vocals you know it’s her – the style is distinctive and for such a youngster, her accuracy, especially live, is spellbinding. But not only is Lott a great recording artist; her note-perfect yet unique live performances set her aside in a world of reality-television singing stars that were over-populating the industry at the time. Lott has accrued a number of awards so far in her musical stardom and was even named by American magazine, Billboard, as one of the Faces to Watch during her early career. Over two years she has won two MTV Europe Music Awards, a Cosmopolitan Ultimate Newcomer award, the Breakthrough Talent Award at the Variety Club Awards and a Virgin Media Music Award. A party girl at heart and one to give every performance her all, Lott has played at all the popular music festivals over the past three summers including V Festival, Radio 1’s Big Weekend and T4 on the Beach, as well as numerous tours and award events. The angelic-faced blondie has come back this summer stronger and sexier than before. Still maintaining her distinct vocals, she has lost the childish look she entered the industry with and, having had 10 inches chopped off her locks, seems to ooze the sex appeal of a cover-star model. Ashlene: I provide permanent make-up for the face. F: I trained at St. Bartholomew’s as a registered nurse , I worked in acute medicine and A&E at the Royal London where I became ward sister in dermatology before leaving the NHS and taking my degree in Aesthetic Medicine and Dermatology. I have worked privately for the past 12 years specialising in Laser Ophthalmology and Dermatology and now offer services at seven private practices. In Essex, London and Suffolk. I have spent more than 6 years writing for national newspapers, magazines such as Elle and Woman and Home offering my expert advice.

Frances: I devise and administer a bespoke combination of facial and body treatments that are tailored to an individual’s needs. These treatments include dermal ﬁllers, muscle relaxing injections, skin peels, MesoTherapy and skin needling. It is about looking at a holistic and aesthetic approach, teaching clients how to care for their skin on a long-term basis, that’s very important. What are your backgrounds? A: I have 20 years experience in beauty therapy, make up artistry and as a medical aesthetic therapist. I was a facialist at Champneys in Tring, before working with a doctor providing medical grade skin peels, laser treatments and permanent make up. I then became a national trainer and account manager for a leading skin care brand and mineral make up range before establishing

A: I am a member of the SPCP the leading American Association for my Industry , I regularly attend courses here in the UK and have attended seminars and courses in the US. F: It is such a fast moving and innovative industry that I often go to Paris for MesoTherapy and Advanced Skin Treatment training. I have also introduced my own combination treatments, ‘the eight-week non surgical facelift.’

So how did the two of you meet?

Who is your average patient?

A: We met though Ash Parmar at Smile Design in Chigwell where we all began to work together because of a shared ethos.

F: There isn’t one! 18- 75 is the current age range of my clients. They are male and female, all skin types and people from all ethnic origins. I have been very fortunate to work with a specialist in Asian and black skin for four years, enabling me to understand different skin types and speciﬁc skin problems. F: Although we are three separate practitioners, we are all driven by the same desire to create amazing results that really make a difference to people’s lives and how they feel about themselves. A: I specialise in treating women, and my client base ranges from 18 to 82. As Frances says, understanding ethnic skins is an essential and normal part of my working day. In addition there are design variations for different races which makes a lot of difference in the design process of my treatments. What makes your services diﬀerent to other practitioners? F: We really ascertain what it is our clients would like to achieve, what it is they like or dislike and give them advice based on an extensive range of products available. Eastern Delight

A menu of multiple cultures often conjures thoughts of compromising standards. Not the case with Nam Tai, a Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant which delivers food of the highest quality across both cuisines. Words by Luke Harman

Overlooking the eighteenth greens of the upper and lower courses at the Hainault Forest golf complex, Nam Tai offers a pleasant and relaxing vantage point from which to enjoy the finest tastes of East and Southeast Asian cooking. While Chinese dining may not be a new experience for many, Vietnamese food is certainly something more of a rarity for most visitors. An instantly distinguishable feature of Vietnamese food is the freshness of ingredients and contrasting presentation. Served with a cold rice paper ‘summer roll’ packed full of prawns, rice noodles and salad, accompanied by a perfectly complimentary plum sauce, the dish is an ideal opportunity to make an acquaintance with the delights of Vietnamese cuisine. Soon followed by what is a very aptly named ‘delicious golden pancake’, it is a wonder as to why there are not more Vietnamese restaurants and takeaways dotted around our high streets. Presented in what can be described for visual purposes as a burrito-esque shell, chicken, prawns and bean sprouts sizzle before being sliced into quarters and served in

a single lettuce leaf. No need for cutlery here as you are encouraged to enjoy your food like an authentic Vietnamese diner, with your hands. Everything is cooked to perfection, right down to the homemade sweet-chilli sauce which gives a subtle kick against the cool freshness of the lettuce and the crunch of the bean sprouts. Another noticeable and endearing attribute of the Vietnamese dishes is the sense of satisfaction it leaves you with. As well as oozing great taste and flavours the food is light, leaving room for more which, in turn, allows for an enjoyable meal instead of feeling bloated and lethargic as is often the case post an instantly regrettable Chinese takeaway. After devouring a plate of traditional Chinese starters, including what is simply the best portion of seaweed ever created, the main courses, a selection from both halves of the menu, are laid out to be sampled at will. Sweet and sour prawns, sizzling chicken with chilli and black bean sauce and the Vietnamese shaking beef â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you have to see it to believe it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are all excellent dishes. Delicately spiced and perfectly cooked, the quality of the food at Nam Tai is unequivocally superior to that of a run-of-the-mill Chinese buffet.

Although an all-you-can-eat option is offered on the Nam Tai menu it remains a challenge to find fault in the quality of every single dish produced. What makes the experience of Nam Tai all the more impressive is the attentiveness and knowledge of the staff. Owned by Peter and exceptionally managed by his sister Linh, the proprietors are recently into their second year of running the restaurant. Named after close friends of Peter, father and son owners of the accompanying golf complex interestingly enough, Nam Tai is truly a familyrun establishment. Such values are charming and comforting in a restaurant environment and never more so than at Nam Tai, as an air of warmth and care emanates around the dining room and off the plates of fantastic food. Put simply, Nam Tai is an exciting and tasty alternative to any habitual dining experience. So Gini, tell us how Beauty just Around the Corner came about: I’d been in the beauty industry for a number of years as a make-up artist and, although the shop is more beautyfocussed, it is an extension of my work that was already established. I had to take a big bold step to set up Beauty Just Around the Corner; if I’d have thought about it properly, about when would have been a good time to open a shop, I probably never would have got around to doing it. It’s about taking that leap of faith – and I’m so happy I did. So your background is in make-up artistry? Yes, I’ve been an Asian make-up artist for more than 15 years now and have worked all over the place. I’m very well known in the Asian make-up industry and really pride myself on my work. I love doing weddings and have seen some of the most beautiful and extravagant occasions, which I’ve really enjoyed working at. Everyone in the industry knows my name and my reputation is very good; I don’t mess people around, or let them down and I am always on time. I think it’s important to hold this sort of ethos, which is why it’s the attitude we have at the shop as well. you opened the shop in Wanstead on valentine’s Day this year; how is it going? It’s going great! I have really loved the

whole project, especially designing and choosing the decor and interior design. It’s been great fun and it seems to be proving popular. We create a nice, relaxing environment with spa treatments, concentrating on massage and wellbeing. We also do microdermabrasion, oxygen therapy, manicures, pedicures and waxing. Are you the only one working in the shop? I have a fantastic team of five therapists working there. They’re lovely and the customers really like them and good relationships have been established since we opened – most importantly, people keep coming back! It’s about looking after people and making them feel special. It’s helped build the business and give us a good name. Do you live near the shop? I actually live in Ilford, so it’s a 15-minute drive to work, which isn’t that bad. I love Wanstead though; it reminds me of where I was born and brought up in Kent. It’s a close-knit community with lots of gorgeous little boutique-type shops. What do you like to do outside of work and at the evenings? Well, I don’t actually have a lot of spare time. I still run the Asian make-up business

so I do a lot of weddings all year round. I can travel all over the uK, especially at weekends, and also during the week, and the days can be very long. I get a lot of satisfaction out of it but it is hard work – sometimes my working day will start at 4am as I set off to drive half way up the country, and then often I will work right through until 8pm. Wow, that is a really long day – when do you have time to relax? I always try to find time for my three children – I love spending time with them and, whenever I’m not working, I always make sure we spend time together. My children (age 19, 13 and 10) and I will often go to the cinema and to the theatre, so it’s nice to spend family time with them. And what else do you get up to? I go for dinner with my friends as well – and sometimes they’ll pop to Wanstead to visit me in-between work. I love the food at The Larder (in High Street, Wanstead), and really enjoy popping to The Cuckfield (also in the High Street, Wanstead) with friends for a bite to eat.
