Scene In the Essex rivals unite in memory of fallen friend.

Students of Davenant Foundation School and Roding Valley paid tribute to school friend and local lad Peter Cross, who tragically lost his 2 year battle with leukaemia on 3rd June 2012. He was diagnosed with cancer only a day after sitting his final A-Level exams, of which he received straight A’s. As well as exceptional intelligence and bravery, Peter was a fantastic

footballer and played for both schools throughout his education; a charity football game seemed the perfect tribute to such an amazing young man. After a hard fought 90 minutes, Roding Valley scraped a 1-0 victory; however the real winners on the day were Teenage Cancer Trust who received over £3000 in donations, all thanks to those whose hard work made the event a resounding success.

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY FOR ATHLETES Patients that have been suffering for years with chronic pain in their feet and ankles can now be treated with shockwave therapy at Holly House Hospital. Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment which is helpful in providing pain relief for patients suffering from a number of common painful orthopaedic conditions or sports injuries. In particular it is revolutionising the

treatment of plantar fasciitis or heel spur as it is most commonly known. This new therapy is just one of the many new physiotherapy services introduced at Holly House Hospital to coincide with the recent launch of the Physiotherapy and Sports Injuries Clinic. The clinic was the first phase to be completed of the hospital’s ongoing £20 million redevelopment and expansion project.

Daniel Craig

A license to thrill Every man wants to be him; every woman to be with him - The name is Bond -James Bond. Words by Nicky Kemp

Steely-blue-eyed Daniel Craig is back to seduce us in his third incarnation as Secret Agent 007 in Skyfall, the 23rd Bond film set for release 26 October. Originally a controversial choice to play Ian Flemmings’ fictional national treasure (“The Name’s Bland - James Bland” The Daily Mirror ran as their front page headline, 15 October 2005), Craig returns to bury his critics having also recently signed a reputed £20milion contract to star in the next two movies. “Everybody needs a hobby” our captive lothario quips in the latest trailer, “So what’s yours?” asks treacherous villain Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) “Resurrection” states a defiant Bond. Though initially greeted with scepticism, Craig’s 2006 debut in Casino Royale was highly praised – most notably perhaps, by former Bond favourite Sir Sean Connery who said on The South Bank Show that Craig was “fantastic, marvellous in the part”, adding he really gets the “danger element” to Bond’s character. Craig’s intense performance earned him a BAFTA Award nomination for best Actor and the film went on to become the highest grossing Bond film to date - a $600 million box office hit. Quantum of Solace starring Bond Girl Gemma Arterton, born and raised in Gravesend, Kent, followed two years later – and proved almost as popular. The detailed plot of Skyfall remains a heavily guarded secret – possibly locked away somewhere deep in the vaults of the real MI6 - but the trailers have been nothing short of epic and provided us with some idea of what to expect. The story focuses on Bond’s boss; M, a role reprised by Dame Judi Dench, who endangers undercover agents around the world when she misplaces important MI6 Intel. James Bond is reportedly killed in action and his heavy-hearted boss struggles to write an obituary: “What do you say about a man like that?” MI6 is attacked, forcing M to relocate the agency. Consequently, her authority and position is challenged by Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes); the new Chairman of 16  SCENE

the Intelligence and Security Committee. Compromised from both inside the agency and out, who can M rely on to track down the threat, no matter what the personal cost? Queue Bond: “007 reporting for duty” M: “Where the hell have you been?” Bond: “Enjoying death!” Aided only by Field Agent Eve (Naomie Harris), Bond follows a trail taking him from London to the South China Sea, leading him to the mysterious peroxide-blond Silva whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to be revealed. “How much do you know about fear?” asks femme-fatale new Bond Girl Severine (Berenice Marlohe) Bond: “All there is” Severine: “Well not like this… not like him!” Skyfall is directed by Sam Mendes, best known for American Beauty, which earned him the Academy and Golden Globe Awards for best Director in 1999. Actor and Director first met on the set of Mendes’ acclaimed film Road to Perdition in 2002 when Craig was cast in the role of Connor Rooney, the angry son of Paul Newman’s Irish mobster patriarch. Craig is said to be more excited about Skyfall than Quantum of Solace. He was quoted in The Guardian in November last year as saying it was going to be “Bond with a capital B!” Mendes added: “I’m incredibly excited to be doing it and it has, I think, all the elements of a classic Bond movie.” Bond purists will undoubtedly welcome the first appearance of Q (Ben Whishaw) in the Craig Bond films, along with the return of beloved Bond gadgets. Q: “Walther PPKS 9mm short. It’s been coded to your palm print so only you can fire it. Less of a random killing machine, more of a personal statement.” Bond purists will undoubtedly welcome the first appearance of Q (Ben Whishaw) in the Craig Bond films, along with the return of beloved Bond gadgets. Although Craig’s performance in Skyfall is probably one of the most highly anticipated of any film to be released this year, it is true to say that the actor’s rise to fame hasn’t exactly been meteoric. He comes from humble beginnings, born in Cheshire, England in 1968 to his mother; an art teacher and father; a Merchant Navy midshipman turned pub landlord. His parents divorced when he was just four years old and shortly after, he moved to Liverpool to live with his mother and sister. He began acting in school plays age 6 and claims visits to Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre as a kid was one of the major influences for him attending the National Youth Theatre. He went on to study at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1991 and begun his early career on the stage. Craig’s early onscreen performances were in the films The Power of One, A Kid in King Arthur’s Court and Elizabeth. He also appeared on television in Heartbeat, Sharpe’s Eagle, Zorro and perhaps most memorably as ‘Geordie’ in the BBC’s 1996 drama Our Friends in the North. His appearances in British films Love is the Devil, The Trench and Some Voices attracted the industry’s attention and British Independent Film Award nominations, leading to bigger roles such as Angelina Jolie’s rival and love interest in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Mendes’s aforementioned Connor in Road to Perdition.

He went on to achieve European recognition and Best Actor Film Award nominations playing lead roles in The Mother with Anne Reid, indie hit Layer Cake co-starring Sienna Millar and Enduring Love with Rhys Ifans. It was only when chosen as the sixth actor to play the role of Bond, replacing Pierce Brosnan, that Craig achieved international fame. If he hadn’t landed the part as the worlds’ most famous double agent, it’s highly possible he would have ended his career in anonymity, toiling in critically acclaimed but unacknowledged roles - but now he is poised to be one of the biggest stars of his generation, not to mention one of the greatest sex symbols. The release of Skyfall co-insides with the 50th anniversary of the Bond series, with the 5 October being designated Global James Bond day, marking the inaugural screening of the first film Dr No in 1962. As part of the celebrations, Christie’s is hosting a charity auction selling off 50 lots of Bond memorabilia, including Craig’s infamous powder-blue nylon La Perla trunks that he so generously sported in Casino Royale leading to that notorious beefcake image. They have been conservatively estimated at between £3,000 and £5,000. And Ladies - Craig reportedly worked hard to beef up again for his sex scenes in Skyfall… Oh James! Sponsored by

Trick Or Treat

how to carve scary pumpkins

S

tep one is to choose your pumpkin. Pumpkins can range in size anywhere from tiny to humongous. Medium sized ones work best for most stencils that you’ll make or buy. Very large pumpkins can be carved with elaborate designs and used as “center pieces” on your porch or tables. Small pumpkins work fine for carving traditional faces they can be done fast and you can have many of them scattered about for parties,

haunts or up your sidewalk as a lighted pathway. For standard carving without a stencil, decide if it should be tall and narrow, or more rounded, based on your ideas. Select pumpkins that are uniformly orange meaning that are ripe, have no bruises, cuts or nicks. If you will be using a stencil to carve your pumpkin, select a pumpkin that is large enough and as close to the same shape as the pattern you’re going to carve. It should be as smooth as possible, and free of scratches, dents or gouges.

Finally, visualise the face or image you want to carve, use your knife to carefully cut out the individual parts of the face or you can pre-marked the pumpkin by using a Crayon to draw the face onto the surface of the pumpkin and cut through the lines you drew. When you are finished cutting, carefully push out the pieces to view the final results.Make sure that you have scrapped the bottom of the pumpkin flat, so that the candle will sit level in the pumpkin. Candles have been the age old method of illuminating Jack O’ Lanterns since, well, forever. Regular Votive candles, placed in clear glass candle holders are safer, brighter and last a lot longer than exposed candles. For small candles you may want to use the small tea-light candles or you can use Glow Sticks for an eerie effect.

The second step is carving your pumpkin. Use a long, thin bladed knife, cut out the top of the pumpkin around the stem. The hole should be large enough to allow you to scoop out the guts (seeds and stringy membrane) by hand and with a large spoon. Generally, the size of the hole should be about two-thirds the diameter of the pumpkin. While you cut a round circle out, you’ll find that cutting a five or six sided opening will work best. As you cut out the top hole, angle the knife so that the lid and hole will be cone shaped. This will prevent the lid from falling into the hole then scrape the inside walls clean. Haunted Essex

SCENE’s guide to Spooky places in essex The historic county can be considered the oldest as Wessex and Mercia were replaced for administration since before the Norman period, But what about its darker more haunting side...

Beeleigh Abbey This abbey was constructed in 1180 for the White Canons. In 1540 Henry VIII granted the abbey and lands to Sir John Gate, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Sir John’s ghost tells the story. Ghost story: My downfall was my support of Lady Jane Grey. Alas, she was Queen for only nine days in July 1553. Once Mary became Queen, supporters of Lady Jane were not dealt with kindly. They executed me on 22nd August 1553. I still visit my old home and sometimes l like to lie down on my bed. You can see and hear me on the 22nd August. I appear on the 11th August as well, hoping that someone will save me from my terrible fate. Beeleigh Abbey, Abbey Turning, Maldon, Essex, CM9 6LL Hadleigh Castle The castle got a reputation for being haunted by a woman in white. A milkmaid called Sally, from Castle Farm, saw the ghostly woman early one morning, the ghost commanded Sally to meet her again at the castle at midnight. But the girl was too frightened to go. She was met the next morning by the ghostly woman, who was so annoyed that she had been disobeyed that she hit the milkmaid around the head, almost dislocating her neck. After this, the girl was known as ‘wry-neck Sal’. People have reported various sightings at Hadleigh Castle, they vary from a ‘huge’ black dog with red eyes to hearing muffled voice of a woman talking. Hadleigh Castle, Hadleigh, Essex, SS7 2PP

St Osyth’s Priory Haunted by a ghostly monk dressed in white that walks at night carrying a lighted candle; this is just one of many ghosts reported here. He Haunted History of St. Osyth`s Priory The magnificent priory building, dating largely from the 12th century, is the most imposing monastic foundation to survive in Essex. St Osyth was a 7th century East Anglian Queen, beheaded in nearby “Nuns Wood” by Danish invaders, when she refused to renounce her faith. Her executioners were astonished when she picked up her head and, holding it at arms length, walked to the village church, where she knocked several times on the door before slumping to the ground. Legend holds that every October 7th her ghost repeats the miraculous feat, and can be seen in the churchyard at midnight, holding her severed head. Clacton Road, Saint Osyth, Clacton on-Sea, Essex CO16 8PE

Borley Rectory The house gained a reputation for being haunted after a series of residents reported unsettling phenomena. In 1929, the story of Borley was heavily covered by the Daily Mirror. Notably, it was investigated by paranormal investigator Harry Price in 1937, who described it as ‘The Most Haunted House in England’, The story of the walling-up of the nun was probably taken from a novel by Rider Haggard. Until the newspaper stories about the ghosts, there had been no mention in the local papers, or any other written source, of anything unusual happening at the rectory. The rectory and the parish gave every appearance of being a typical East Anglian rural parish. Borley Rectory, 52 Rectory Road, Sudbury, Essex, CO10

Harwich Redoubt Fort Witnesses have reportedly seen apparitions through the windows and heard unexplained footsteps. Many visitors to the fort have also reported being touched by unseen hands in the lower casements. There have also been many other mysterious noises, apparitions and hot and cold spots. The fort is well known to the apparition of a headless soldier. It is reported that in 1972 a soldier was decapitated by a cable attached to a 12 ton cannon which broke under the strain. The soldier has been reported to be walking within the grounds of the fort headless and sometimes with his head tucked under his arms Harwich Redoubt, 29 Main Road, Harwich, CO12 3LT

Property SCENE with Hayley Hunt

The only way is Repton” the posters proclaimed. And Repton Park’s family fun day certainly lived up to all the hype as more than 2,000 people turned out on for a great day on 9 September. Even the late summer sun played its part as Repton’s cricket green was converted into one big playground, with a host of attractions, including a ‘Lovefootball’ tournament captained by ex-West Ham player Don Hutchison. And best of all? The event raised over £20,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice. I want to thank others who helped me make the day so successful. From the stars of TOWIE, who attended our ‘meet and greet’ marquee – Gemma Collins, Billi Mucklow and Frankie Essex; to Joey Essex, whose tandem raised £800 in auction; to D.J. Tommy Sandhu, who provided the music and acted as auction MC. To all the volunteers and residents who turned out on the day and gave so generously. In particular I’d like to single out Alicia Tricker, who was the inspiration behind the event and who worked so tirelessly to make it a success; Matt Snelling, our development manager and Martyn Bass of MBS Gardening, each of whom worked alongside me in organising it all. As if our family fun day wasn’t sufficient, the previous evening saw Repton’s annual black tie ball. The weekend marked the 10th anniversary of this beautiful development, which I am proud to call home and I was delighted to be one of the main sponsors of both events. Finally, a word about the local property scene, which remains as buoyant as ever, particularly the rentals market. My office has been busier than usual over the past few months finding new homes for some of the incoming Tottenham Hotspur players and coaching staff. Even with a number of new instructions, including some particularly attractive homes in Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill and on the Monkhams estate, we are still – as always – looking for new stock. Do contact me, whether you’re buying, selling or renting.

New homes for sale in Essex and surrounding areas The Home Counties are where London hits the countryside, and those in search of new build homes in Essex may find themselves pleasantly distracted by gently rolling hills, ancient woodlands and mile upon mile of glorious coastline. While looking at new homes for sale in Essex property-seekers should visit Colchester, an ancient settlement founded by the Romans, before moving onto one or two of the many coastal towns where sampling the local oysters is a must. Offering a retail experience like no other, the Lakeside Shopping Centre provides an important service to residents. Seasons

Fine-Dining in Essex

S

easons Fine Dining is a boutique family-run restaurant that promises a five-star West-end dining experience. Serving exquisite modern French/British cuisine with a unique twist, their menu changes each week according to what’s in season. Their ingredients are locally sourced – like the flour for their homemade bread, fish is brought in daily from the London fish markets and all their meat is free-range. The finest wines are carefully selected to compliment every dish. Jack Bell, Head Chef, has been perfecting his craft for over 15 years having worked in award-winning fine-dining restaurants including the outstanding Les Elysees du Vernet restaurant in Paris and Alex Smith in Cheltenham, Essex. “I am most proud of the fact that everyone working in our kitchen is recruited from the local area and under the age of 25. We invest in local youngsters, train and educate them in fine dining - to the highest level. Everyone in the kitchen is passionate and motivated, it’s a great working environment.” (Jack Bell, Head Chef). “Move over Jamie Oliver!” Grace Goodman, Sous Chef, most recently worked in Scotts of Mayfair. She has created several new desserts, winning lots of praise from customers. Often boasting a full house, it’s hard to believe Seasons is just three months young. Their reputation is built on good community relations and word-ofmouth recommendation. They pride themselves on first-class front of house service and can accommodate parties of up to 100 people. They don’t mind going that extra mile to

bring ‘the personal touch’. It’s no secret they played host to TOWIE’s Mark Wright’s welcome home party and at the point of writing this article, they were designing a bespoke menu for a local family’s wedding anniversary – featuring photographs of the bride! Fun is also on their menu, with wine tasting, gourmet evenings and live entertainment all coming soon. Plus the restaurant showcases the work of local artists, currently Fine-Art Photographer Simon Walton - and there’s a 50% discount for customers who wish to take his captivating artworks home with them. Sundays are family days with a roast to die for and a special kids menu. One diner commented on independent website Trip Advisor: ‘The Sunday Roast was undoubtedly the best we have had in a restaurant - to be truthful it was better than my Mums, but I dare not tell her!” What more can we say? Except book early to avoid disappointment!

Effortless Beauty Aston Martin One-77

The One-77 is Aston Martin’s definitive sports car, one that epitomises everything Aston Martin from technology, the hand-craftsmanship of the hand rolled aluminium panels to the attention to detail. A culmination of all the marque’s know-how, the One-77 delivers effortless beauty guaranteed to stir the senses with performance potential eclipsing any previous Aston Martin.

C

onsequently the One-77’s structural core is a lightweight and immensely rigid carbon fibre monocoque. Conceived and designed at Aston Martin’s Gaydon HQ, the monocoque, or ‘tub’, has been built in partnership with Multimatic (MTC). As world leaders in carbon composite technology, advanced vehicle analysis and dynamic simulation, MTC brings unrivalled specialist capabilities to the exacting challenge of the One-77 programme. Employing the classic formula of double wishbones at each corner, the One-77 features inboard suspension front and rear, with pushrods employed to transfer vertical suspension movements to the horizontally mounted spring/damper units. A practice taken directly from racing car design, the main advantages of inboard suspension are a reduction in unsprung weight and the ability to package the suspension components more effectively. The dampers are fully adjustable and feature

48  SCENE

advanced Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) technology; a world-first for a road car application. These special valves are state-of-the-art even at the highest levels of motorsport, and use high-precision machined components to enable the shock-absorbing characteristics of the damper to be changed without having to remove them from the car, as is the norm. Underlining the truly bespoke nature of the One-77, once delivered to its owner, the car’s suspension characteristics will be precisely set-up by Aston Martin engineers to suit their exact requirements, from settings suitable for the ultimate long-distance GT, to a machine capable of conquering the Nürburgring Nordschleife. While functionality and efficiency are paramount in the design and construction of the One-77’, so too is aesthetic beauty. To this end every single component has been crafted from the finest materials with absolute attention to detail. From the mesmerising weave of the glossy carbon fibre tub and the abstract, sculptural

beauty of the dry sump’s oil reservoir, to the unerring precision of the billet machined aluminium suspension mounts, the One-77’s rolling chassis is an automotive masterpiece. Naturally, such a spectacular chassis demands – and gets - an equally exceptional drivetrain. It comes in the form of an immensely potent 7.3-litre, naturally aspirated V12 engine. Thanks to the adoption of a dry-sump oil system the engine is mounted 100mm lower than in any previous V12-engined Aston Martin road car, which helps keep the One-77’s centre-ofgravity as low as possible. To further aid agility and endow the One-77 with progressive handling and stable, predictable on-limit behaviour, the engine is also mounted 257mm aft relative to the front wheel centreline. In so doing the front-mid-engined layout shared by all of Aston Martin’s current road car range has been taken to a new level. Wearing Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres (255/35 ZR20 front, 335/30 ZR20 rear) developed specifically for the One-77, all 700+bhp is transmitted to the road through the rear wheels via a new six-speed gearbox. Controlled via column-mounted paddles behind the steering wheel, this robotised sequential manual is a new generation of Aston Martin’s familiar transmission. Though it is made specifically for the One-77 and features specially strengthened internals to cope with the tremendous power and torque, the lessons learned in its development will ultimately find their way into the company’s series production models. It’s a mark of the inherent capabilities of Aston Martin’s acclaimed lightweight Carbon Ceramic Matrix brake technology that it has been used as the basis for the One-77’s braking system. The internals of the calipers have been re-engineered to transmit less heat from the brake pads into the brake fluid, while the discs themselves have been developed to ensure the maximum possible contact area between the face of the disc and the brake pads for improved stopping

power. Due to the One-77’s increased performance, special attention has also been paid to brake cooling, as the brakes have less time to cool between bursts of acceleration. With a projected weight of 1,500kg the One-77 will occupy the very highest echelons of road car performance. Top speed is confidently predicted to be in excess of 200mph, with a 0-60mph time in approximately 3.5sec. Perhaps more importantly, thanks to the purity of a front-engined, rear-drive layout, the responsiveness and immense tractability of a naturally aspirated V12 and the low mass, highrigidity properties of a carbon fibre chassis, the One-77 promises a driving experience of unrivalled intensity and excitement while representing the world’s most desirable automotive art form. 23 Sep-22 Oct To begin a new chapter in your life, one must learn to take what has happened to them in the past and start to apply that in today’s life. To have a better way of living one must renounce the past and let go of all that has clogged up their lives, making them stuck in many ways. All who read this will be able to relate.

21 Mar-19 Apr Be still and see what is all around you. You are so afraid of losing what you have it is making you nervous and uneasy. The situation is now changing and what was a stranglehold is no more. Rest easy and take in all the good things that are now on offer to you. Remember to appreciate them as they are not given easily.

Scorpio

Taurus

23 Oct-21 Nov Opportunities now fresh and secure are being offered to you. There are no hidden agendas; all is above board and to your liking. Consult a legal team to finalise the details and then the adventure can begin. It’s a lifetime’s ambition and is not to be missed. At last you come into your own and are able to excel in ways not thought possible before.

20 Apr-20 May Monumental changes will see you upset and restless. It’s a good thing, as it is the freeing up from the past, so that the new can come in. A breath of fresh air, you can begin to see how it will all pan out in your favour and all will benefit under the new system. It is needed to give you peace of mind you deserve.

Sagittarius

Gemini

22 Nov-21 Dec No more worries about money as a new important policy is given to you, which will alleviate all finance from now on – a better way to budget than ever before. Start to feel a security that you have not felt in a very long time and begin to see that there are angels in your life, even if you think it is all nonsense.

21 May-20 Jun Making a break of it, while you have the chance to do so, is a very good idea. This opportunity will not be there in five months’ time, so there is no good moaning that you have let this situation go. A firm grip of life to catapult you into the next venture is what is needed to reaffirm what is so necessary in your life.

Capricorn

Cancer

22 Dec-19 Jan A new system of working and providing for yourself will be given to you. It will make you laugh and cry at the same time. You didn’t think it was possible or could ever happen. Taste the good life and see the benefits coming to you each day. Gratitude is not necessary, living is. It had to be this way as the benefits are much greater.

21 Jun-22 Jul To be at peace is to sort out what is so wrong with your life now. Until you make the move to self-fulfilment nothing can be done to help you. You have to start addressing your needs now and make the relative changes to accommodate these needs. Spread you net further afield. The pot of gold or satisfaction is there and not around the corner.

Aquarius

Leo

20 Jan-18 Feb What was once a complex operation is now being partially freed up, so that you are able to make inroads where before it seemed impossible. No need to push matters. The situation will develop nicely by itself. Calm down and get on with the important work you were always meant to do. Interesting work and finance will be offered to you, so take up this opportunity.

23 Jul-22 Aug By being vocal you will not get the job done. What needs to happen is a totally new outlook on life and to see where you are best placed. That opening, which you thought was dead and buried, will be there for you. Out of the blue a new more advanced proposition is placed before you. It will help to change your life forever.

Pisces

Virgo

19 Feb-20 Mar To step off the edge into a cloud of wisdom and notoriety is what you have been trained for all this time. Enjoy everything that is given to you. It is well meant and will secure your future for life. To be seen as one who can command a position of excellence will seem natural to you. Just be yourself and allow others to see that too.

23 Aug-22 Sep A waiting game seems to be the pattern that is going on in your life just now. It is frustrating and necessary, as components need to be put into place first to effectively allow you to move on. Once the green light has come in, which it will, then it will be all hands on deck to bring forth your hearts desires. All is appreciated then.
